FROM THE SCOUT EXECUTIVE
Scouting…A Way of Life
F
or those of us who have been involved in Scouting our entire lives, sometimes we forget just how unique the Scouting program is in our fast paced world. Try to come up
with another program that a boy can join in 1st grade and then continue for
the rest of his life? While I’m sure there are a few, Scouting truly can become a “way of life”.
• U.S. workers average job tenure is 4.6 years. • The average college student takes 6 years to get a four-year degree. • Of the 20 million youth in the U.S. that sign up yearly for team sports, almost 70 percent quit by the time they’re 13.
A Scouting volunteer recently shared with me an e-mail that he had received from the parent of a boy in their troop. Take a minute to read his comments below: I was thinking after the meeting last night about what an achievement it is for any youth in today’s world to stick with something for 5 or 6 years. Consider this: • The average career length for an NFL player is 3.5 years, NBA 4.8 years and MLB is 5.6 years.
The average kid who continues in sports begins limiting themselves to one sport on average by age 14-15. It makes it tough for a kid to stay in a program like Scouts that requires year round participation. Scouting is the

only activity I can think of that is a 12 month participation "sport" so to speak. For any youth to stay active at any level for 5-6 years is a feat in itself. To still be participating at the age of 16-18 in a program they most likely started in 1st grade is nothing short of amazing. I think it says volumes about the Scouting program and the quality of the youth involved in Scouting. One of the things I like to share with parents is that most Scouts (and parents) will not fully realize the positive impact that Scouting has had on their life until they are out of high school. It will quickly become apparent to them that thanks to their time in the Scouting program, they have a broader knowledge and better leadership skills than most of their friends. Their time on campouts, backpack trips and summer camp will make them more self-sufficient and confident. With over 32,000 youth involved in the Scouting program in the Heart of America Council — or about 20% of all Cub Scout and Boy Scout age youth, we know that our communities are a better place because of Scouting. This would not be possible without the commitment and dedication of over 15,000 registered leaders. As always if you have any questions, ideas or concerns let me know. SCOUT DAY AT THE K 2015
What do you get when you mix more than 14,500 Scouts and Scout families together with pregame festivities, Eagle Scout honorees and America’s favorite pastime? One of the largest Scouting events in history and a major home run for Scouting in Kansas City. Attendees crowded into Kauffman Stadium on April 19 for the 6th annual Scout Day at the K to watch the Kansas City Royals take on the Oakland A’s. Scouts were treated to a thrilling game and a win, but more than just a baseball game, Scout Day showcases the fun of Scouting to the entire Kansas City community.
Slugerrr lends a hand during the pregame Scout parade
Scouts were given VIP access to the stadium as part of the “Outfield Experience” which included a variety of special activities for Scouts and their families. Scouts were also featured in a number of pregame activities such as the first pitch, national anthem, color guard, and Scout parade. Part of the annual event also included the presentation of the Ewing M. Kauffman Distinguished Eagle Scout Award, an honor that recognizes adult Eagle Scouts for their positive contributions to the Kansas City community. This year’s honorees were Fox 4 News Anchor John Holt, John Dillingham, President of Dillingham Enterprises, Inc., and Lon Lane, owner of Inspired Occasions. Plans are already in the works for Scout Day at the K 2016. The 2016 date and pricing will be announced this November.

2015 Sale Preview We have an exciting new popcorn program coming your way in 2015. There’s new products, new websites, new incentives, new training models and a new volunteer leadership team. Here’s a sneak peek at what’s in store.
NEW PRODUCTS Our newest product is as simple as it gets. Sunflower oil, popcorn and sea salt. It is called “Simply Popped” and our council is one of the beta testers for this product. The tins are back and one will be turning heads for sure. We’re excited to announce the addition of a brand new Kansas City Royals tin for this year’s sale! Last, but not least, we’re also bringing back some non-popcorn items for Scouts to sell.
NEW INCENTIVES
NEW TRAINING
New incentives to help motivate Scouts and leaders include free delivery of popcorn for those units that sell more than $15,000. This is a great help for those who traditionally have had to pick and distribute popcorn themselves. We are also streamlining our prize program to make it less cumbersome for our leaders. All prizes will be facilitated through BSA National Supply who did a great job last year offering unparalleled customer service.
We’re excited to announce the addition of our new Seller’s Academy — a training workshop aimed at educating both Scouts and leaders about the 2015 popcorn sale. Seller’s Academy courses will feature everything from online selling tactics to how to manage your unit’s prize program. Seller’s Academy workshops will start this August. Be on the lookout for specific dates and locations this summer.

Bartle Scout Shack More than 200 volunteers made their way to the H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation on April 11 for the annual Skilled Trades Work Day. One of the many projects completed was the construction of a new BMX Program Center. The framework for the new BMX structure may look familiar. That’s because it was on display from March 20-22 at the Greater Kansas City Home Show. The aptly named “Scout Shack” was constructed in the HBA Build Zone inside Bartle Hall by Homes by Chris. The framework was then donated and transported to the Bartle Reservation a few days later. Special thanks to the Home Builders Association of Greater Kansas City, Homes by Chris and McCray Lumber for our latest camp addition.

SCOUTING HISTORY
SCOUTING HISTORY
Chief Bartle Arrives at Camp to his Favorite Camp Song By Andy Dubill, Council Historian It always seemed that Chief Bartle managed to arrive from Kansas City around mealtime in the early 1940’s. His big, black car “would roar around the dining lodge a couple of times and then he would make his grand entrance to the delight of staff and campers alike,” recalled Bob Merrill (Medicine Man Fast Squirrel) over fifty years later. “You never knew the Chief to do anything quietly!” When Chief Bartle exited his car, the entire assemblage of Scouts, leaders and staff would break into a chorus of "The Big Chief ": An Indian Chief with a big red nose Got stuck on an Indian Maid, And every night when the moon was bright Across the Osage he'd wade. He'd sit and croon to his dusky moon Under the big oak tree. And when they met they sang a duet That sounded like this to me: Eewah cheewah Osceola! This was both a tribute and a welcome to the Chief upon his arrival. The old dining hall was the social center of camp and was used through 1950. A small balcony was added on the inside, in addition to the picnic-pavilion annex on the outside. After the meals were complete, campers would sing, enjoy skits, listen to stories told by the camp staff and be entertained by those musically inclined. This always helped keep camp morale high. Favorite songs and staff singers that campers remember include: Chief Bartle —“Trail to Eagle”, “The Hills of Osceola” and “Tell Me Why” Skipper Joe Macy — “On the Banks of the Wabash” Ike Wall — “Ivan Skavitsky Skivar” Finley Fiske — “Smile and the World Smiles With You” Doc Soule — “Alouette” Pappy Grube — “Valley Will Roll” and “Battle Hymn of the Republic” If you have questions about Scouting history that would be good topics for future columns, email Andy Dubill at adubill@aol.com.

Olathe Troop Recognizes 200th Eagle Scout With a legacy spanning 85 years, Troop 86, Grace United Methodist Church, is one of the oldest troops in Olathe, Kansas. On April 11, the troop celebrated a milestone achieved by very few as they recognized their 200th Eagle Scout. The historic celebration brought together Eagle Scouts spanning generations and the event itself was held exactly 83 years after the troop awarded its first Eagle badge on April 11, 1932. The highlight of the event was the roll call of Eagle Scouts. The names of all 200 Eagle Scouts were read and all those present were recognized. The most senior in attendance was Harvey Jetmore who was awarded his coveted Eagle badge on May 29, 1944.

Dr. William LaHue Honored With Good Scout Award Friends, family, and Scouters gathered to honor Dr. William LaHue with the Good Scout Award on April 29. Dr. LaHue accepted the award on behalf of the many volunteers and parents in the Big Muddy District. Dr. LaHue has spent more than 30 years serving the H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation as a camp doctor, and he was elevated to the responsibility of Presiding Chieftain in 2008. The event was chaired by Mr. William Tempel, sponsored by Langdon & Emison, Attorneys at Law and hosted by the Margaret Gray Center in Lexington, MO. Thanks to their support, the event raised over $1,400 for the district’s Investment in Character Campaign. The Good Scout Award is presented to those who exemplify in their daily life the ideals of the Boy Scouts of America as expressed in the Scout Oath and Law. Recipients are chosen for their outstanding community service, as evidenced by their leadership to many worth-while organizations, as well as the respect and esteem in which they are held by their colleagues. The recipients are often not currently involved in the Boy Scouts, but often have supported the organization in some way. If you know someone in your community deserving this award, contact James Arcano or Bosh Bruening.

Blue Elk Participates in a Day of Caring By Peter Muelleman, District Public Relations Chair The Independence Parks Department received a Good Turn from the Scouts in Eastern Jackson County on May 2. The annual Blue Elk District service project occurred at five sites and involved 10 troops and packs with 150 volunteers, and was completed despite the intermittent rain. The Vaile Mansion, George Owens Park, Adventure Oasis, and McCoy Park had landscaping completed, and Water Fall Park received a general cleanup of litter. The Independence Parks Department supplied supervision and equipment for the project.
The inaugural Ambassador of Scouting Award was presented on May 7 to the Independence School District for their continued support of the Scouting program. Superintendent Dr. Dale Herl accepted the award on behalf of the school district.
The Blue Elk District performs the annual project to fulfill the Scouts requirement to “do a Good Turn Daily” and to live by the third point of the Scout Law “a Scout is helpful.” Troop 161 Scouts removed shrubs from Adventure Oasis that were transplanted to McCoy Park.
A Scout from Troop 173 helps at the entrance of George Owens Park, one of five city park work sites during the day of service.

This year our honoree was John McBurney, Scoutmaster of Troop 133. John was instrumental in starting the “buddy program” at Camp Naish, a program that pairs traditional Scouts with Scouts with disabilities. He serves as a merit badge counselor and has served as the district’s Scouts with Disabilities Chair.

Hey Cub Scout Packs, do you know about the Summertime Pack Award? Did you know it is a simple award to earn? The requirements are to have at least one pack activity a month in the months of June, July, and August and to keep track of who all attends. That is it. Once completed and the summertime pack award form is filled out, simply submit the form to Debbie Read at the Heart of America Council Service Center and you can then get your patches in the Scout Shop. This is a great way to keep your boy’s engaged throughout the summer. Activities could include day camp for June, a swim party in July, and a hot dog barbeque in August to welcome everyone back to the pack for the fall. You can find the form at www.hoac-bsa.org/camping-resources
Be Featured in Adventures in Scouting The Lone Bear District would love to hear your Scouting story. Do you have an interesting trip that your unit has gone on or a community service project that you would like to share? We would love to be able to share your story in the next edition of Adventures in Scouting. Send photos and stories to David Riker at david.riker@scouting.org.
Spring Camporee was AWESOME! Jon Cerda and his team provided an outstanding spring camporee! It was a new idea and a new location, and I believe everyone had a great time. In case you missed out, here are the details. The camporee was held at Bennett Springs State Park in Lebanon, MO. The boys who came prepared most likely went away from the camporee with the completed Fly Fishing merit badge. There were contests for the most fish caught, the biggest fish caught, and the first fish caught. A HUGE thank you goes out to Charlie Reading and Readings Fly Shop. Charlie and his team helped provide some additional staff to help teach the young men the fly fishing merit badge as well as provided at
least $1000 worth of free prizes, including two fly rod and reel combos! Thank you again Jon and your staff for your leadership and preparations to provide an outstanding spring camporee.

TED TALKS — News from our District Chairman Summer is an important time for our Scouting program in many ways. There are activities for all our units including Day Camp for Cubs and Summer Camp for Scouts. Planning for these started last fall with camp draws and leader assignments. But now is the time to make sure that all Scouts have the opportunity to attend. We want to make sure that as many Scouts as possible participate in these activities - because they are such an important part of Scouting. Now is also the time to plan additional activities for your units during the summer. We all know how busy it is with family activities, summer sports, school activities, and everything else that goes on. It is too easy to let our Scouting programs “take a break” after day or summer camp with the intention of regrouping in the fall, but if we do our Scouts can lose interest. When that happens membership and retention suffer. Spring recruiting programs are designed to offer our activities to those who missed fall sign-ups and want to participate during the summer, but it is up to us as leaders to see that the summer months are active and busy for all Scouts, new and old. Summer is also a good time for planning, particularly for Scouts. A summer campout is a perfect time to let the Scouts design their program for next year. Leaders need to know what the Scouts like, and sometimes the Scouts need some direction in choosing activities that fill advancement needs as well as being fun. Planning needs broad participation and all the distractions of summer can make it hard to focus on Scouting. By getting your units off in a retreat setting, you can form the solid base for an excellent year of Scouting. Before you know it, fall recruitment will be here, and summer is the best time to start planning ahead for back to school nights. This is a great time to recruit new adults as well, but with Tiger leaders we need to start sooner. In too many cases we have parents who are willing, but without prior Scouting experience it is too much to ask of them without an opportunity to learn and train first. Try to identify potential Tiger Den Leaders during the summer so they can be ready to go when the boys are. As a unit leader, don’t be afraid to ask for help and ideas. Roundtable is a great time to meet with your
peers and see what they are doing. Your Unit Commissioner is another resource, if they don’t know the answer to a question they can find someone who does. Our District Executives and the staff at the council office are professionals trained in Scouting programs and are also always ready to help. To all those involved in Scouting in the North Star District, keep up the good work. I thank you for your time and hard work. Yours in Scouting… Ted Wilson — North Star District Chairman
“PLUS ONE” — Attention Unit Leaders! Are there any youth in your unit who have a friend who is not in Scouting? If your answer was NO, then you should probably look again. Every Scout who is an active member in a unit has a friend who is not in Scouting. What are these nonScouters missing? Fun! Adventure! Leadership Skill Development! Camping!!…and the list continues. Your challenge is to find that one Scout in your unit and get him to personally invite that friend to come see what Scouting is all about. And, add +1 each and every month. If every unit can add just one more Scout to their unit this month, then our District will be able to meet our membership goal by the end of the year. LET’S DO IT!!!
God and Service Awards A Scout is Reverent For the last several months, Scouts from the North Star District have been working on their respective Religious Awards of Faith. This includes from God and Me all the way up to God and Life. Recently, a total of 117 youth received their religious award. This represents a tremendous effort by both the youth as well as their mentors. Of this group, seven young men have earned their Four Star Award. This means that they have earned all four of the religious awards available to Scouting. They are: Morgan A. — Troop 412 Nathaniel C. — Troop 271 Brock R. — Troop 376 Jonathan L. — Troop 376 Kristopher E. — Troop 376 Dylan S. — Troop 260 Max G. – Troop 288

Venturing Leadership Award Recipient David Smiros, President of Crew 2888, was awarded the Venturing Leadership Award at the Council’s Venturing Banquet on April 24. David was also inducted as the 2015-2016 Venturing Officers Association President. David is involved in many activities in Scouting and in every event you will see him wearing his Venturing uniform. He has David and his Venturing Leadership Award guided his crew in a variety of functions. Among these activities was the Haunted Trails event at Camp Naish, where the crew haunted the “Lost Mines” as zombies. This past year he helped organize the crew’s tour of Whiteman Air Force Base, as well as many other additional activities. Under his leadership, the crew earned the Gold JTE award. David has earned the Outdoor Venturing Bronze Award, the Venturing Award, and the very difficult Ranger Award.

sponsored by the Olathe Fire Department. He shares this skill by serving as the Emergency Preparedness Support Staff Chairman in Tamegonit Lodge, where you can find him serving in the Health Lodge during OA activities. This summer, David will be serving his fourth year on Bear Camp Staff at the Theodore Naish Scout Reservation and will serve as the Assistant Program Director. David attends Johnson County Community College. After he earns his Associate Degree, he plans to attend Pittsburgh State and major in Environmental Sciences. Our district is incredibly proud of this successful Scout!
Northern Tier District — IOLS Training at Camp Naish On April 13 our district held its spring Introduction to Outdoor Leadership Skills training at Camp Naish – South Camp. This training initiative was led by the Training Chairman for Northern Tier, Jeff Deane, and several assistants including Dave Sultz, Bob Wald and Dan Wright. Saturday was an absolutely gorgeous day to be outside learning the patrol-style method of Troop leadership. With several Troop leaders in attendance, the discussions were varied and informational.
David is an Eagle Scout and was awarded the Order of the Arrow’s Vigil honor this past fall. He is also a Warrior in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. David is a natural leader and has a desire to serve; he is a true example of servant leadership. He has been trained in emergency procedures and first aid through his five year involvement with the Explorer Post

Fall School Nights for Scouting Now is the time to prepare to have good recruitment for your pack this fall! Thanks to the packs for the time and effort you put into making your school night successful. It is essential that all youth have the opportunity to join the fun of the Scouting program. It is our job to tell the “Scouting story” and encourage prospective new families to experience all that Scouting has to offer. There are sessions available at the August, September and October Roundtables to learn more or to get additional assistance. Feel free to contact any of the District Professional Staff to get ideas and help to recruit more youth.
Zombie Apocalypse Camporee Prepare yourselves for the camping adventure of a lifetime…All troops and crews will need to prepare for the impending Zombie Apocalypse. We will gather October 9-11 in the reportedly haunted old Truman Farm area north of Freedom Cycles in Grandview.
Don’t forget to invite the Webelos to come and visit this year. Webelos are invited to visit your troop and stay for the Saturday night Campfire — they are not allowed to participate in the competition with your troop’s patrols. For more details or to be on staff contact Pete Zibers at pzibers@gmail.com or (816) 686-1649.

Four scouts from Troop 126 earned their 50 Miler Award on the Ozark Highlands Trail in Arkansas. Using Leave No Trace guidelines, the crew navigated beautiful mountain terrain totaling 58 miles. Requirements for the BSA 50 Miler Award stipulate that a comprehensive hike plan be completed, the trail to be hiked must be a minimum of 50 consecutive miles and the hike must be a minimum of five days. A total of 10 hours of trail improvements must also be completed as a service project during the hike.
