Cost-saving measures when gifting with a large family Exchanging gifts with loved ones is one of the joys of the holiday season.

But it can be challenging to reign in holiday spending when your shopping list is especially lengthy. Fortunately, there are many ways for holiday shoppers to cut costs this season.

• Create a limited gift exchange. Speak with other family members who also may be feeling the pinch of holiday spending to establish a gift exchange system.

Rather than purchasing a gift for everyone in the family, split the list accordingly. Maybe everyone will only be expected to purchase gifts for the children, instead of buying for kids and adults. Propose that you only exchange gifts with immediate family members and not your extended family, such as your cousins, aunts and

uncles. Develop a system that works for everyone so no one feels like they need to break the bank this holiday season.

• Host a holiday grab bag. Grab bags are great ways to exchange gifts without going broke. In a traditional grab bag, everyone brings a gift that does not exceed a predetermined value and puts it in the bag.

Each family member then pulls a gift out of the bag.

Allow everyone the option to swap with one another if one gift is more fitting for a particular person.

• Set a price limit.

Decide in advance that gifts should not exceed a certain price. This way if you are budgeting for the holidays you will have a better understanding of what you can expect to spend if every gift should be around $30.

• Pool your resources.

Rather than giving many little gifts, pool your resources with some relatives and give a single big-ticket gift. Each person can contribute the same amount, or family members can contribute as much as they can afford.

• Give an experience.

Sometimes the gift of an experience, such as tickets to a sporting event or a night at the theater, can make a thoughtful and impressive gift. Again, other family members can contribute, and collectively you can enjoy a night on the town or another adventure.

Tips for visiting a store Santa Claus Christmastime is filled with many different traditions. Many people decorate their homes with Christmas trees, and songs are sung with family members who come from near and far to share gifts and companionship.

Families with young children often make visiting Santa Claus a part of their annual traditions. During the holiday season, Santa can be found taking up residence in department stores and malls across the country. Thousands of children and their parents will wait in line to get some face time with jolly old St. Nick.

The following are a handful of ways to make kids’ visits with Santa even more pleasant.

• Do a test run. If your child has not taken a photo with Santa before, he or she may be frightened and the result will be a poor photograph. The beard and the red coat coupled with the fact that kids are sitting on a stranger’s lap can be terrifying for youngsters. Acclimate your child to the experience by visiting the mall to see Santa and become familiar with what he looks like and how he acts. It may take a couple of visits before your child is ready to wait in line for the real visit.

• Go off-peak. Visit Santa when the store just opens or when lines are not as long, such as during school hours or dinner time. This should cut down on the wait and create a less tense experience. Confirm

visiting hours so you don’t arrive only to find he’s out to lunch or feeding his reindeer. Do not schedule anything after the Santa visit, so you don’t feel rushed.

• Dress comfortably.

Wear comfortable shoes and clothing so neither you nor the kids will be uncomfortable. The goal is to look nice for the photo, but not at the expense of the children’s comfort level. And while you should be comfortable as well, be sure to look presentable, in the event you have to hop into the photo if that’s the only way your son or daughter will tolerate the experience.

• Pack some supplies.

Bring snacks and drinks for the kids so hunger does not make them antsy. Bring along a change of clothes in case someone spills food or

1. Follow directions on pompom maker packages to create three different sizes of poms of various colors using chunky yarn.

2. After making pompoms, place pompoms around wreath, varying sizes and incorporating fur pompoms, as well. The overall look should be a kind of hilly terrain look to give it depth.

1. Lightly spray inside or outside of smooth Mason jars and jelly jars with rose gold spray paint. Allow each coat to dry completely.

2. Locate templates at joann.com by searching for the project title; print templates and trim shapes. If the outside of the jar was spray painted, trace the shape with a pencil. If the inside of the jar was spray painted, trace the shape on the glass with a Sharpie.

3. Fill in each design using a detail brush and white enamel paint. Apply additional coats as necessary.

4. Paint jar rims gold.

5. Apply a thin layer or dry brush gold acrylic paint on jelly jars for added texture and dimension.

6. Embellish jars by making bows and knots with scrap strips of fabric or baker’s twine around rims of jars. Fill with sprigs of dried flowers or branches or other seasonal decorations, or for jars painted on the outside, fill with candies or treats for an edible gift.
