Season outlook for CCHS, SMHS The Cumberland County Jets/Lady Jets and the Stone Memorial Panthers/ Lady Panthers are about to kick off their 2015-'16 seasons. The 6-AAA media poll has picked the CCHS Lady Jets to compete for first place in the district standings while the Stone Memorial girls have been picked to finish tied for fourth. In the same poll, the CCHS boy's team has been selected to finish
third, behind Cookeville and White County, while Stone Memorial has been selected to finish fifth. The 6-AAA coaches poll is pretty close to the same for all four squads. The CCHS Lady Jets have been slated for a first place finish while the Lady Panthers have been selected to finish fourth behind White County, Cookeville and CCHS. For the boys, CCHS received two votes to tie for first place in the dis-

trict and Stone Memorial has been picked to finish fifth. This should be an interesting basketball season on the Cumberland Plateau. CCHS coaches Radhika Miller and Will Foster will have high expectations placed on them due to preseason rankings while Stone Memorial has the ability to overachieve in the underdog role. The Lady Jets have three seniors returning in standout Makenzie Iles,

SMHS boys look to improve in 2015-’16 A wise man once said, “Experience is something you get just after you needed it.” The two biggest obstacles facing the 2015-’16 Stone Memorial Panthers basketball team will be youth and inexperience. The Panthers will have three players returning that were partial starters during the 2014-’15 campaign and five total upperclassmen in all. As of now seven freshmen will complete the remainder of this year’s roster. Even though the team is young and will have its share of struggles this year, this is a great group of young men that Coach Neil Capps is looking forward to working with. This year’s seniors include Shade Foster, Mason Bau-
cum and Ransom Velker. Juniors are Tristan Norman and Nathaniel Sexton. The sophomores this year will be Preston Buck, Seth Sherrill, Adam Swensen and Chase Welch. Our freshmen class is comprised of Conner Barnwell, Jacob Brown, Mason Cox, Justin Headrick, Garrett Magnusson, Dylan Mathews, Cole McClellan, Brett Newcome, Ethan Norris, Brandon Stewart and Jared VanWinkle. The support staff for the Panthers this season is Matthew Noland and Christian Velker. Coach Capps would like to thank everyone for their support this year and invites you to a game to cheer on the Panthers and Lady Panthers.

Buck returns to lead Lady Panthers The Stone Memorial Lady Panthers return to action for the 2015-'16 basketball season with many new players and a new head coach. SMHS boys wrestling team return 13 lettermen Stone Memorial Panther wrestling team opens its 10th season on Tuesday, November 24. The match will be away at Coach Parker’s alma mater and A-AA Powerhouse, Hixson. They will also wrestle Salecreek High School. “Wrestling Hixson in our first match each year lets our kids know where they stand early in the season. They have an established middle school program that makes them consistently tough every year. I think it will be a great match this year.” Coach Brian Parker returns 13 lettermen and ten state qualifiers from last year’s squad. Chris Hassler will be returning as a volunteer assistant coach. New faculty members, Jonathan Durham and Andy Bryan will be joining the coaching staff for the Panthers. Durham was a region champion and state qualifier for CCHS under Coach Parker, while Coach Bryan was a state qualifier for Sevier County. The lettermen that will be leading SMHS Wrestling in their tenth season are Dylan Kemmer, Jordan Bowles, Xavier Finley, Anthony Alegria, Marco Hernandez, Chandler Brickle, Jacob Flannery, Stephen Amsden, Jared Debord, Juan Loza, Brandon Burnett, Justin Johnson, and Christian Gabbard. Other wrestlers that should make an immediate impact include Mario Juan, Elmer Estrada, and transfers Cody Wyllins, Ronnie Wyllins and Alec Moore. Sophomore Dylan Kemmer had a very good varsity record for a freshman last year with 19 wins. He was a state qualifier and 3rd in the Region. “Dylan works very hard in practice and has huge potential in the sport. He will be a force at 106 pounds for several years.” Sophomore Mario Juan saw some varsity time last year at 106 and 113. He will be challenging Dylan for the varsity spot at 106 with the loser going up to 113. “I’m very happy to have Juan back this year. He is fast and strong and has a lot of potential if we can get him in shape and

He will likely wrestle 120 or 126 this season. “Jordan has a great attitude after being thrown into varsity line-up as a rookie last year. I think that experience is going to translate into some big wins for him this season.” Sophomore Xavier Findley was the SMHS Most Outstanding Freshman last year at 120 pounds. He should easily exceed his 25 wins at the 120 or 126 pound class this year. “Xavier is a great athlete and competitor. I am very excited to see what he can do as he improves his wrestling technique.” Junior Anthony Alegria doubled his wins from his freshman year to make 30, which was third best on the team. He hopes to win enough matches at state this year to place in the 132 weight-class. “Anthony made big improvements in his takedowns last year and it showed in his wins. If he continues with that kind of improvement in other areas, he will reach his goals.” Marco Hernandez is a junior who won the Most Improved award last sea-
son. He had a great sophomore season with 23 wins just as a second year wrestler. He will break 30 wins this year at 138 pounds. “Marco is a fierce competitor that never stops coming after you. With a little more technique, he will be unstoppable.” Senior Chandler Brickle, junior Jacob Flannery, and junior Stephen Amsden will all be fighting for the starting spots at 145 and 152. Flannery spent most of his time last season on varsity at 138 and won 15 matches. Brickle saw a lot of matches at 145 pounds. Both boys qualified for State. “There should be some great challenge matches, depending on who goes for what weight class. Jacob probably has the advantage because he has been working very hard all summer and fall. I love this kind of competition because it makes them all better.” Junior Jared Debord had some hard knocks at 160 last season as a rookie in a varsity spot, but he is better for it and made it to the State Tournament. He will be looking to break 20 wins at the 160 or 170 weight class this season. “Jared is very funny and has a fan-
tastic attitude. It is hard to wrestle 160 pounds as a rookie in a very tough varsity weight class, but knew that it would only make him stronger. I’m excited to have him back again.” Transfers Cody and Ronnie Wyllins are expected to fight hard for a starting spots anywhere from 152 to 170. They both have several years experience from the state of Florida. “I don’t know a lot about their wrestling abilities, but some experience along with their athleticism will make for some good challenge matches at several weight classes.” Sophomore Elmer Estrada has made some big improvements since last year and he will be looking for a varsity spot at 170 or 182. “Elmer works hard every day to get better without being told. Eventually he will make his mark in wrestling.” Senior Brandon Burnett spent some varsity time at 182 last season. He plans to win a full-time spot at 170 pounds this season and qualify for State. “Brandon has a lot energy and wrestles hard. I think he can really help this year if he focuses on his technique.”
Senior Juan Loza is looking to wrestle at 182 after having 23 wins at the weight class last season. He qualified for State by placing third in the region. He should break 30 wins and make a run at placing in State. “Juan has made huge improvements just since the summer. He works hard to improve anywhere he is weak. If he keeps this up, he will meet his goals.” Senior Justin Johnson is a 3-time state qualifier that placed 4th in State last season. He was the team’s Most Outstanding Wrestler and he is ranked number 2 this year at 195 pounds. Justin plans to take the number 1 spot this season. “Just when you think Justin might be in trouble, he pulls out a move you didn’t know he learned. He rarely gets beat by the same person twice. He is such a competitor that he will meet his goals. I am excited to see him make a run for the state title.” Sophomore Christian Gabbard took a lot of lumps as he was thrust into the starting spot at 220 pounds with very little experience. He toughed through it with grit and determination and now he is more confident
and ready have a winning record and make it to state at 220 or 285. “Christian got some good experience by being thrown to the wolves last year and wrestling with Chase Eichner in practice. He has been working hard so far this year to live up to my high expectations for him.” Senior Alec Moore has been away from the sport for a little while but comes in with some wrestling experience from CCHS. He will be working for the varsity spot at 285 pounds. Out of the 30+ wrestlers on this year’s squad, the panthers have acquired a class of freshman hopefuls as well as some upperclass rookies. Among those are freshmen Chris Heller, Harley Conley, Paxton Elmore, Jake Finley, Lance Hedgecoth, Tom Kerver, Shawn Richards, and Matthew Tollett. Sophomores Masion Connock, Cody Jordan and Jonah Richards as well as junior John McDonald will be joining us for the season. Some freshman football players have shown interest in joining after the play-offs, they are Thomas Arnold, Jeremy Lloyd, Daniel Paul, Jody Phipps, Dalton Roberts, and Hunter Withers. “We are already seeing some great potential from a lot of these new guys. Tollett and McDonald have wrestling experience from another state, while Finley and Hedgecoth wrestled for the Cumberland youth program. Connock, Jordan, Jonah Richards, Shawn Richards, Elmore, and Kerver have no prior experience, but have come a long way in a short time during open gym. Conley and Heller will help us a lot at the 106-pound class. We are excited to see what they can accomplish over the next few months.” “After missing out on a state berth by one match last year, we look forward to making a run for the region title this season. We only lost two starters from last year’s team and gained a few experienced kids. This season is going to fun!” Good luck to all of our wrestlers and the Panther Wrestling Team!
Lady Panthers wrestling set to begin eighth season The SMHS Lady Panthers Wrestling Team starts its eighth season in 2015. The SMHS Lady Panther Wrestling Team will be participating in various girls’ tournaments in East Tennessee, Knoxville and Nashville before going on to the Regional and possibly State Competitions. Coach Parker has three medalists coming back as well as several new prospects. “With three medalists returning, we have a chance for a couple of state champions in a tough, discipline-driven, individual sport.” Coach Jonathan Durham, who is new this year to the SMHS Program, will take on the role as the girls’ coach. Coach Durham was a region champion at CCHS under Coach Parker. State medalists Kyah St. Marie, Katie Scoville,
and Laura Napier will be returning from last year’s team. Kyah had a great year as a rookie. She finished 3rd in the State Tournament with just a few months of experience. She is looking for a state title in her junior season. “Kyah has worked hard all summer with workouts and camp to prepare for this season. She learns quick and I think she will come out on top of the state podium.” Katie is a fierce competitor that placed second in State as a freshman rookie. “Katie went a long way last year on pure aggressiveness and will. With a year of experience behind her, she is going to be hard to stop on her return trip to the state finals.” Senior Laura is a threetime qualifier that placed third in the State Tournament her sophomore year
and fifth in her junior year. She plans to go for the state title this year. “Laura has done a lot already to help some of our new girls. This leadership and drive is going to help her reach a long time goal of winning a state championship.” New additions to the girl’s team include freshmen Kimberly Smith, Bella DelRossi, Cassie Tinkle, and Kenzi Callaghan. Smith, Tinkle and DelRossi have put a lot of time in at open gym. “These girls really seem to like the sport. I hope they will stick with it and see how far they can go. “We have the potential to send a lot of girls to the TSSAA State Tournament and bring back multiple state medalists and multiple state champions. I am excited about the possibilities with this team.”

High expectations headline Lady Jets’ season The 2015-’16 Lady Jet Basketball Team have set their expectations high as they look toward the upcoming basketball season. At the conclusion of the 2014-’15 season, the team finished 26-6, achieved the AP Poll Top 10 state ranking in AAA basketball, were the Region 3 AAA Runner-Up, finished in the Sweet 16 in AAA basketball and fell to Blackman in the Sub-State Sectionals. Blackman went on to be the back-to-back AAA State Champs. The Lady Jets are eager to build on their journey for success– together. The team has constantly reminded each other throughout the summer and fall, especially during conditioning and strength training, of the importance of working “together” and supporting each other in order to achieve their goals. According to Coach Radhika Miller, “This team understands the importance of teamwork and they have set goals for this season. The Lady Jets have tasted the sweet savor of victory and they are hungry for more. They understand that it will require the combined efforts of each team member, working together, toward their common team goals. This team is intensely competitive and talented, but more importantly, they are relentless when it comes to their work ethic, commitment, and competitive edge.” The 2015-’16 Lady Jet Basketball Team encompasses experience, leadership and commitment. The senior class has been together since the fourth grade and they have been part of the Lady Jets basketball program since their freshmen year. They are Makenzie Iles, Alli Hyder, Courtney Smith and Madison Wyatt. In addition to these veteran seniors, the team includes six experienced and competitive juniors – Destiny Carlton, Klaire Varney, Sydney Clark, Lindsey Norrod, Hannah Brown and Matti Hinch. The sophomore class includes three members, Marce Kerley, Hannah Andrews and Brittany Triplett. The roster would not be complete without the addition of eight new freshmen – Gracee Dishman, Kiara Wilson, Jessica Hedgecoth, Alli Smith, Shelby Howard, Brooke Rockwell, Elizabeth Squier and Haley Hicks. This will be the fifth season for Head Coach Radhika Miller. In her four years as the head coach of the CCHS Lady Jets, Coach Miller has accumulated 83 wins, as well as the 2014 District 6 AAA Championship Title, two Top 10 AP Poll State Rankings, three Regions 3AAA Championship Playoffs, three Sweet 16 finishes, three Sub-State Sectionals playoffs and three Freshmen Champi-
onship Titles. Also, Coach Miller was also chosen to coach the East in Tennessee’s 2014-’15 BCATTACA All-Star basketball game. This season, Coach Miller will be assisted by her husband, Assistant Coach Andrew Miller. He will once again lead both the freshmen team and JV team this season. This is his third year with the Lady Jets as an assistant coach, even though he has been supportive, committed and involved in every aspect of the program from beginning. According to Coach Radhika Miller, “It is a blessing to enjoy this journey with my husband and our family. I am thankful Andrew is my assistant coach. His support is relentless and I know he is committed to the overall success of our program. I do believe he has been around some aspect of basketball everyday for the our past 15 years of our marriage (poor guy). He understands the discipline, commitment and loyalty required for our success. Our commitment to this team extends beyond practices and games. This team is an extension of our family and it is usually our topic of conversation at breakfast, lunch and dinner. His knowledge of the game and support is greatly appreciate. We are blessed to share this experience “together” with our children, Trystan and Sofi.” In addition, the 2015’16 Lady Jets basketball team would not be complete without the mention of their bus driver, Steve Dishman, and scorekeeper, Greg Maxwell. They would not survive without their helping hands and support. “Poppie Steve” has drove the team for the past four years and his support and efforts are greatly appreciated. According to Coach Radhika Miller, “It is a blessing to be able to share this experience with my dad and our family. Basketball runs deep in our family and has always been a part of our lives. My mom and dad are always there to support me, as well as the rest of my family, and I am very grateful for that. ‘Poppie Steve’ makes those long bus trips more enjoyable and special. I am thankful that he and I get to enjoy the success of the Lady Jet basketball program ‘together.’” In addition, “Coach” Greg Maxwell, has kept the scorebook for CCHS Lady Jets basketball team for the past four years. His roots in basketball go back to years of playing and coaching basketball. He was Coach Radhika Miller’s “former” coach at South Cumberland Elementary. According to Coach Miller, “Coach Maxwell is one of the most dedicated and enthusiastic people I know. He has a
sincere love and appreciation for CCHS and we are blessed to have him.” Lynn Burgess will continue to be a symbol of “Jet Pride” in his support and love for the Lady Jets basketball team. “Lynn is a sweet blessing to our team. We are thankful we get to share our success and experiences with Lynn,” said Coach Radhika Miller. “His loyalty and support for the Lady Jet basketball team and CCHS definitely make him CCHS’s ‘Biggest Fan.’” The 2015-’16 Lady Jets basketball team’s senior class is intensely competitive, determined and relentless. The senior class is composed of Makenzie Iles #1, Alli Hyder #11, Courtney Smith #52 and Madison Wyatt, manager and student trainer. Makenzie Iles #1 (G), has already signed a Division I Basketball Scholarship with Tennessee Tech University. Makenzie’s leadership sets a positive example for the Lady Jets basketball team. She is a dangerous threat, both offensively and defensively, and her natural athleticism enables her to anticipate, react and respond in every situation. “Mac” will continue to lead the Lady Jet offensive attack. Her work ethic on and off the court, dedication and commitment to her goals definitely ensure her success. According to Coach Radhika Miller, “Mac has worked hard for her achievements and has her goals set high for her last season as a CCHS Lady Jet. I am proud of Mac, proud for her family and proud for our program. She will continue to excel this season as a Lady Jet and she will excel as Lady Eagle at TTU.” Alli Hyder #11 (G), is a tough, strong, physical guard whose athleticism enables her to excel both offensively and defensively. “Al” leads the team with the GRIT & GUTS that every team must have in order to be successful. She can knock down the “3,” handle the “rock” and make you pay for a defensive error. She is fierce competitor and takes pride in her leadership role with her aggressive, competitive edge.” Courtney Smith #52 (C), is the Lady Jets dominant force inside. She is stronger than ever, and anxious to dominate the paint this season. “Court” leads the team with her strength, size and GRIT. She will own the boards and the “SWAT” chart this season with her athleticism and court awareness. “Court” has the ability to knock down the outside shot, as well as deflect
or “SWAT” her opponents shot. According to Coach Radhika Miller, “Courtney is our ‘X’ factor. To reach our goals, we have to have her dominant presence inside, both offensively and defensively. She makes an enormous impact on our team and program.” Madison Wyatt, manager and student trainer) is the “motor” behind the Lady Jets basketball team. She serves as the team’s student-athletic trainer, manager and so much more. According to Coach Radhika Miller, “Madison is our ‘righthand.’ She keeps everything and everyone in line, informed, together and ready. Her efforts, commitment and contributions are vital to the team’s success and efficiency. She will be an asset to TTU, at the collegiate level, serving as a team manager.” The 2015-’16 Lady Jets basketball team’s junior class is stacked with talent, experience, strength and confidence and they get results. They drastically add to the offensive attack and are leaders on the boards and defensive end. The junior class is led by Destiny Carlton #12, Klaire Varney #23, Sydney Clark #20, Lindsey Norrod #3, Hannah Brown #22 and Matti Hinch #42. Destiny Carlton #12 (G), is a “Super-Quick” experienced, guard whose defensive and offensive skills will impact every game this season. “Des” is a dominant defender and rebounder. Her skills, quickness and court sense enable her to lead by example. She is one of the best on-ball defensive players. Her ability to knock down the 3 & blow past any defender make her a constant threat offensively. Klaire Varney #23 (G), can shoot the lights out, breakdown any defender and rebound like a post. “Verney” has the competitive edge, the skills and fundamentals, and the work ethic that’s needed for success. She is strong, athletic and her size will enable her to dominate
at the guard position this season. Sydney Clark #20 (G), is the GUTS, GRIT & HEART of the Lady Jets basketball team. “Clerky” has a tough, competitive edge and strives for excellence. She is a top-notch defender, at any position, and her ability to drive the lane and knock down the open shot will enable her to positively impact both ends of the court this season. Lindsey Norrod #3 (F), is over-whelmed with athleticism, quickness and a love for the game. “Lins” has “HOPS” that enable her to play the post position and her quickness enables her to defend on the perimeter. She is a “GRITTY” and tough player who is always willing to put out the extra effort to be successful. Hannah Brown #22 (G), is an expert shooting guard. “Hannah” can positively impact both ends of the court with her court sense, skills and quickness. She is an intense defensive player and her quickness enables her to an quickly react and positively respond. Matti Hinch #42 (F), is a tough and strong post player who will validate her presence in the paint this season. She is overwhelmed with a fullpackage of “GRIT” and “GUTS.” “Mattie” is “Super-Aggressive” and has the ability to knock down the outside shot. The 2015-’16 Lady Jets basketball team’s sophomore class is small in number, but definitely not in talent, work ethic, heart and commitment. The sophomore class includes Marce Kerley #34 and Hannah Andrews and Brittany Triplett, managers. Marce Kerley #34 (G), is a blessed with quickness and athleticism. “Marc” will impact the team the season with her defensive skills, swift drives to the rim and ability to knock down the outside shot. Hannah Andrews, manager, is a team manager who is vitally important to our team with her support
efforts. She works hard to make sure the team has everything they need and is always ready to offer her help. Brittany Triplett, manager, is also a team manager. This will be her first year with the Lady Jets and she is a joy to have onboard. Her efforts have already proven to be helpful and appreciated. The 2015-’16 Lady Jet’s freshmen class is “bubbling” with talent, skill, GRIT and intense competition. The freshmen class includes Gracee Dishman #32, Kiara Wilson #14, Alli Smith #00, Jessica Hedgecoth #15, Shelby Howard #21, Brooke Rockwell #8, Elizabeth Squier #33 and Haley Hicks #2. Gracee Dishman #32 (G), is from South Cumberland Elementary. Her ability to drain-the-three and attack the rim will make her an offensive threat this season. She has an intense, competitive edge and she can handle the “rock which will enable her impact our success this season. Kiara Wilson #14 (G), is also from South Cumberland Elementary. Her top-notch athleticism, defensive intuition and GRIT will definitely contribute to our defensive attack this season. Her ability to knock down the outside shot and “MuscleHustle” will also impact their success this season. Jessica Hedgecoth #15 (P), is also from South Cumberland Elementary. Her athleticism and strength will enable her to play some “BIG” post minutes for us this season. Shelby Howard #21 (P), is from Martin Elementary. Her work ethic, commitment and court sense will enable her to excel this season. Alli Smith #00 (G) is from Homestead Elementary. She is a “GRITTY” guard. Jets return eight seniors for upcoming 2015-’16 season The CCHS Jets basketball team has 10 seniors (eight players and two managers/trainers, Samantha Godsey and Allyna Kerley) this season. Of the players, seven have been in the program for three years now and understand how the program runs. The coaches will be counting on all these young men to help lead the program. Nolan McClain is a very aggressive and strong young man. He has a knack finding loose balls and being the right place. He can finish around the basket and has an excellent jump shot. Jordan Graham is a great floor general. He has a great sense of where players will be and can get them the ball. He also has developed his perimeter game to keep opponents honest. Drew Vaden is an athlete that can play above the rim. He has been improving each day of the summer and all thru the pre-season. He has excellent finishing speed and can finish above the rim. David Elliott brings an energy when he is on the floor. He give 100 percent at all times. He is a great rebounder and can knock down jumpshots. The
team will count on David to bring energy when he is on the floor. Alex Dixon is a solid guard that has been improving every year. He will lead our team as a point guard. He has really worked on getting better with his ball delivery to the post. He sees the floor very well and can make passes that are difficult to see. Ty Tabor started for us some as well last season. He is a very tough player and will hit the glass hard. He has worked on scoring with his back to the basket. Cade Smith will be another young man we will count on to score for the team this season. He is a tremendous outside shooter and has worked on taking the ball to the basket. The coach looks for big things from Cade this season. He has been honorable mention all district the previous two seasons. Tyler Howard is new this season. He has played football for the last three years and the team will look to him to give them some help in the paint. Sophmores Conner Russell has a great work ethic and a willingness to listen and learn. He works hard on
anything that you tell him to and has an eagerness to improve. Ryan Graham is a very long athletic player. He works very hard on things that you give him. He is developing his inside game. Josh Dykes is developing into a great point guard with excellent range. As he develops he will be an asset to the program. Devin Watkins is a big body on the inside. He plays hard and has an instinct for the game. As he develops he will be a big asset to the program. Lee Hale is a really great shooter. He has excellent passing ability and will have a shot to show that on the varsity level this season. He is very smart on the floor and makes great decisions. Ethan Tays is a newcomer as well. He works very hard and really wants to learn to play at this level. Silas Clark is a very smart basketball player. He played his way to a full time starter last season. He was honorable mention all district last season and was TN Prep Hoops all region last season. The team will count on Silas to be a big part of the offense this season.
The Jets also have 15 freshmen this season who are all working hard. They had a great spring and have worked hard this summer and since school started conditioning and getting better. Coaches look forward to watching these young men develop over the next few years. Many of them will see a lot of action in JV and freshmen games. A few may surprise and get to be on the varsity They are: Braden Qualls, Devon Covey, Jay Smith, Ben Patton, Erik Barrera, Zach Brooks, Hunter Hutson, Angel Marquez, Justin Reed, Kyle Spieles, Kevin Swallows, Marshall Thomas, Hunter Tuttle, Jesse Willenburg and Austyn Woody. Coaching Staff Blaine Moore is entering his seventh season as the head assistant and head freshmen coach. Scott Davis is entering his fourth season as an assistant. Spencer Rogers will be entering his second season as an assistant. Will Foster will be entering his seventh season as head coach and 10 over all at CCHS.

According to Coach Radhika Miller, “We are proud to be recognized as a firstplace contender early in the season. However, its just a poll and the work still has to be done. What matters more is where you are in March. We have packed our schedule with nationally ranked and state ranked teams. We want to play the best in order to be our best. We want play ‘together’ and continuously work toward playing our best. Our strength will continue to be in our depth, our quickness, strength/size in paint, ability to handle the ‘rock’ and our intense, competitive edge. Our team has set goals and made a commitment to be more confident
in our defense, more confident in the ability to knock down the open shot, more confident in our aggressive attacks to the rim, and be more ‘together.’ The past two years the backto-back AAA state champions, the Blackman Lady Blaze, have ended our season in the Sub-State Sectionals game. We know what it takes to get there, play at that level and win at that level. The 2015-’16 Lady Jet basketball team is committed to the overall excellence of our team–

The rankings at the recent District 6 AAA meeting left the 2015-’16 Lady Jets basketball team first overall in the media poll. The District 6 AAA coach’s poll left the Lady Jets in also in first place.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Once again, No. 2 South Carolina and No. 4 Tennessee enter the season as the favorites to contend for the Southeastern Conference women's basketball title. That much hasn't changed. But once you get past the teams that shared last year's regular-season title, it's tough to predict anything about this league. "Really, in the SEC, you never really know what to expect," Tennessee guard Andraya Carter said. "I think last year it was like, 'Oh, this team beat that team, but they lost to another team,' or, 'They beat this team twice but lost to a team that might be ranked less.' That's just the nature of the SEC." South Carolina tied Tennessee for the regularseason title last year and later beat the Lady Vols in the SEC tournament final and made its first Final
Four appearance. Both the SEC's media and coaches have picked South Carolina first and Tennessee second in their preseason polls. No. 11 Mississippi State is picked to finish third in the league, its highest appearance in the history of the conference's preseason media poll. Georgia, Vanderbilt and LSU traditionally are among the SEC's top programs, yet all three are picked to finish in the bottom half of the conference standings this year. The most notable change this season is the guy missing from Georgia's bench. Andy Landers stepped down in March
after coaching the Lady Bulldogs to 862 wins in 36 seasons. Georgia's new coach is Joni Taylor, who had spent the last four seasons as an assistant on Landers' staff. "We are great friends," Taylor said. "Outside of him being a great mentor to me and everything he's done, he is my friend. I call him all the time and just say I miss seeing you every day."
