For the second year in a row, the basketball teams from Cumberland County and Stone Memorial high schools will be competing in District 6AAA with Cookeville, Rhea County, Warren County and White County. CCHS lost "the nucleus of the team" last year in senior Rebecca Teeple, but the Lady Jets "must create continuity and try to foster leadership" this season. She noted five of her players have had nose surgery over the years, including sophomore Klaire Varney. Makenzie Iles has broken her nose four times and will have surgery in the future. CCHS, SMHS wrestling teams compete in different regions By Ed Greif

The Cumberland County and Stone Memorial wrestling teams will continue to compete in different regions than their basketball counterparts for 2014-'15. The basketball teams are in the sixteam District 6AAA with Cookeville, Rhea County, Warren County and White County, while the grapplers compete in Region 3, District 5 (Sevier County, Seymour and SouthDoyle). District 6 teams are CCHS, Heritage, Maryville, SMHS and William Blount. "It was rough being in Cumberland County for eight years as a wrestling coach because the Chat-

tanooga region is loaded and your state placers all come out of the area. So it makes it harder for our kids to go compete with the rest of the state because they get smothered," said Coach Wes McNeely. Those teams Coach Mac referred are in Region 4, District 7 (Cleveland, McMinn County, Rhea County and Walker Valley) and District 8 (East Hamilton, Bradley Central, Ooltewah and Soddy-Daisy). Cookeville continues in Region 5, District 10 with Lavergne, Oakland, Siegel, Smyrna, Stewart Creek, Blackman and Riverdale, while Warren County is in District 9 with Coffee County, Franklin County, Lawrence County, Lincoln County, Shelbyville and Tullahoma.

Some of SMHS former opponents – Alcoa, Greenback, Kingston, Livingston, McMinn Central and Sequoyah — are in Region 8A/ÅAA for both individuals and duals. Girls wrestling started in Tennessee six years ago at a few schools. Now, there are more than 30 schools participating. The state is split into three regions, east, middle and west, with the top four from each region advancing to the state tournament. CCHS and SMHS are in the east region with Chuckey Doak, Cocke County, David Crockett, East Ridge, Elizabethton, Happy Valley, Hardin Valley, Northwest Academy, Sullivan East, Sullivan South, Tennessee High, West Greene and Knox West.

Lady Jets continue to do ‘what it takes’ to win The 2014-’15 Lady Jet basketball team has set its expectations high as they look toward the upcoming season. After finishing 28-6 last season and claiming the 2014 District 6AAA championship, the Lady Jets are eager to continue their journey for success, together. The team continues to practice by, play by, and live by, “W.I.T.” This stands for “Whatever It Takes.” The team has constantly reminded each other throughout the summer and fall, especially during conditioning and strength training, of the importance of doing “Whatever It Takes” to achieve their goals. Coach Radhika Miller said, “This team understands the importance of working together toward their common vision. The Lady Jets have tasted the sweet savor of victory and they are hungry for more. They understand that it will require the combined efforts of each team member, working together, to achieve their goals.” W.I.T. continues to represent the 2014-2015 Lady Jet basketball team as they prepare for the upcoming season. This team is intensely competitive and talented, but more importantly, they are relentless when it comes to their work ethic. The Lady Jet basketball team encompasses experience, leadership, and commitment. Seniors Gina Dick, Vic-

toria Lee, Skylar VanWinkle and Jalen Holt have been together since the sixth grade and they have been a part of the Lady Jets basketball program since their freshmen year. In addition to these veteran seniors, the team includes seven juniors, Kelsie Eldridge, Alli Hyder, Makenzie Iles, Courtney Smith, Madison McLaughlin, Bailey Davis and Madison Wyatt. There are 12 sophomores, Destiny Carlton, Klaire Varney, Sydney Clark, Lindsey Norrod, Hannah Brown, Bethany Dyer, Lexi Lee, Bekah Capps, Emily Pugh, Matti Hinch, Kali Turbett and Mary Beth Maxwell. Marce Kerley, Sydney Tabor and manager Hannah Andrews are the freshmen members of the team. Miller said, “The senior class is hard-working, competitive and determined. They truly exemplify the team’s motto, “W.I.T.” “Gina is a tough, strong, physical guard whose athleticism enables her to excel both offensively and defensively. She is the returning 2014 District 6AAA Tournament MVP. ‘Gino’ takes pride in her leadership role as premier defensive player and strength in the offensive attack. ‘Gino’ is the type of player every coach wants to coach. She has natural athleticism, naturally motivated to compete, and she has a relentless work ethic.” “Victoria is a strong, physical post who is just plain fierce. ‘V’ is the

grit and guts that every team must have in order to be successful. Her commitment to work and improve her outside shot will definielty payoff for us this season. She has an intense desire to win, loves to compete, and hates to lose,” said Miller. “Skylar is a physical, strong guard who has worked hard to take her game to a new level. Her ability to shoot the three makes her a fierce, offensive threat. ‘Sky’ is a type of player that is 100 percent about the team with an intense competitive edge. Her leadership and work ethic fires up the team everyday, whether we are practicing or playing a game,” the Lady Jet coach continued. Holt is the team manager. “She is the heart of our team and proud-fully assumes her role. “J’Leno” puts her whole heart into supporting the Lady Jets and she boosts the team morale with her Jet pride.” The junior class is stacked with talent, strength and size. They collectively lead the offensive attack. “Courtney is returning in top condition. Her ability to shoot outside, as well as dominate the paint make a her a force to be reckoned with. Court’s strength, size, athleticism, presence in the paint, and determination will definitely impact every game this season,” said Miller. “Madi will be an active threat inside the paint, as

well as on the perimeter. ‘M&M’ has the ability to dominate the paint and boards, as well as knock down the outside shot. She is coachable and willing to do whatever it takes to bring success to the Lady Jets basketball program,” continued Miller. “Kelsie is the type of player who is strong and physical enough to play inside, but also has a great shot on the perimeter. Her size has nothing to do with her ability to dominate the boards. Kels is a true competitor who has a relentless, tough game mode that hates to lose,” the veteran coach added. “Alli is an aggressive, competitive guard who can make things happen on both ends of the court. Her athleticism and competitive edge, enables her to be explosive both defensively and offensively. She can handle the rock as well as make you pay for a defensive mistake,” said Miller. “Makenzie is a natural athlete that can impact a game at every level. She is the returning 2014 District 6AAA Player of the Year. Mac has worked hard to exploit her strengths and improve every aspect of her game. She has emerged as a leader of the team and she continues to back that up with her relentess work ethic and dedication. She is a dangerous threat, both offensively and defensively and continues to lead the Lady Jet offensive attack. Her athleticism and court awareness enable her to anticipate, react

and respond efficiently in defensive and offensive situations,” stressed Miller. “Bailey is an all-around great teammate, athlete, student and person. ‘Bay’ always gives her all and is committed to her goals. She is the type of player that leads by example with her work ethic motivation, and intensity,” added Miller. Wyatt is the team’s student-athletic trainer and manager. According to Miller, “Madison is the motor behind this team. She keeps everything in line, including the team and the coaching staff. Her efforts, commitment and contributions are vital to the team’s success and efficiency.” The sophomore class is ahead of the game in regards to their experience, skill level, confidence, talent and ability. “Destiny is an experienced, aggressive and quick guard whose defensive skills will impact every game this season. She is a returning 2014 AllDistrict and All-Regional team recipient. Des is so quick and dominant as a defensive and offensive player. Her on-ball defense makes her a force to reckon with. She serves as the driving force to our defensive attack. Her ability to shoot the three, attack the RAQ (goal) and passing expertise make her a constant threat offensively,” said Miller. “Klaire, from South Cumberland Elementary, is a competitive, all-

around point guard who can shoot the lights out, drive to the RAQ, and create some intense ball pressure. She finished some big games for the Lady Jets last season and was instrumental in their post-season tournament play,” noted Miller. “Sydney is returning from an ACL injury. She is such a tough, competitive guard with top-notch defensive and rebounding grit. Her ability to attack the rack and knock down the shot will make her a premier player this season,” said Miller. “Lindsey is extremely, athletic and quick. Her size enables her to play the post position, and her quickness and ability to knock down the outside shot make her a competitive guard. She is a gritty and tough player who is always willing to put out the extra effort. She exemplifies what it takes in so many ways,” Miller stressed. “Hannah is a tough guard who has a great shot and can effectively react and respond on both ends. She has worked hard to improve her game during the off-season and will contribute to the success of our program this season,” said Miller. “Bethany has expanded her game during the offseason by improving her ball handling and shooting. She is an athletic and coachable player who has a determined work ethic. Lexi is an aggressive shooting guard that is swift on

Her outside shot is spot-on and her athleticism enables her to impact both offense and defense. “Kali is a strong post player who is determined to dominate the boards and paint. The team rallies behind Kali’s efforts and she is the heart of our program. She has worked hard during conditioning and will continue to strive for her goals,” continued Miller. “Emily is a tough and strong post who validated her presence in the paint last season for both the junior varsity and freshmen teams. Her hang-time enables her to get shots off against many taller defenders. She is a coachable player who always has a smile on her face, even when the team is conditioning,” said Miller. “Matti is packed with grit and guts. She is an aggressive, strong post player who

She always brings her best effort every time she hits the floor for practice or games,” Miller stated. Maxwell is a team manager. “She is a vital asset to our team with her support efforts. She works hard to make sure the team has everything they need and is always ready to offer her helping hands,” continued Miller. The freshmen class is small in number, but definitely not in work ethic, heart and talent. “Marce, from North Cumberlan Elementary, is a very quick, aggressive, and agile player who will largely impact the Lady Jet basketball program over the next four years. “Sydney, also from North Cumberland Elementary, is our track-star. Her motor never stops and she is always ready to compete,” Miller said. Manager Hannah Andrews is from Martin Elementary. “She always seems to know just what is needed and works hard to make sure that everything is

taken care of. Her efforts have already impacted our team in so many positive ways,” Miller noted. The rankings at the recent District 6AAA meeting left the Lady Jets first overall in the media poll. The District 6AAA coach’s poll left the Lady Jets also in first place. Miller noted, “We are proud to be recognized as a first-place contender early in the season. However, it’s just a poll and the work still has to be done. What matters more is where you are in March. “Our goals for this season include being quicker, more aggressive, more confident, and more commited to excellence and the team’s goals. They have enjoyed close to 60 victories over the past three years, as well as the 2014 District 6AAA championship, two Sub-State Sectionals playoffs and three freshmen championships. Coach Andrew Miller will lead both the freshmen and junior varsity teams this season. This is his second year with the Lady Jets as an assistant coach, even though he has been supportive, committed and a part of the program from beginning. According to Radhika Miller, “I am thankful to have my husband, Andrew, as my assistant coach. I do believe he has been around some aspect of basketball everyday for the past 14 years of our marriage. He understands the discipline, commitment and loyalty required for our success. Our commitment to this team extends beyond practices and games. This team is an extension of our family and it is usually our topic of conversation at breakfast, lunch and dinner. His knowledge of the game and support is greatly appreciated. We are blessed to share this experience, together, with our children Trystan and Sofi.” Coach Leslie Eldridge will serve as an assistant varsi-

ham, Nolan McClain, Cade Smith, Ty Tabor and Drew Vaden, sophomores Kevin Flores, Cason Graham and Jake Moore, and freshmen Silas Clark, Josh Dykes, Ryan Graham, Lee Hale, Connor Russell, Devin Watkins and Hayden Woody. "Brandon is a post player who has a lot of passion and desire for the game of basketball. He is great student and a shining example of what it means to be a Jet Basketball player," said Foster. "Austin is one of the purest shooters I have been around. He shoots in the high 30s from the three and has deep range. He is a big

asset to our team and will have a key roll in our offensive scheme," added Foster. "Tyler is quick and a very good defender. He will be counted on to stop the other teams quickest player. When he is on the floor he makes everyone pick up the pace with his high octane play," noted Foster. "Blake is a senior with toughness and a strong desire to win. He started in many games last season and will help us on the boards. He can also stretch the defense with his outside shooting ability," said Foster. "Diego is a very quick and smart guard. He will be counted on to bring leadership on and off the court," Foster added. "Our junior class is very

solid as well. We have several players that saw extensive playing over the past two seasons," said Foster. "Nolan is a very aggressive and strong young man. He has a knack finding loose balls and being the right place. He can finish around the basket and has an excellent jump shot," Foster stated. "Jordan is a great floor general. He has a great sense of where players will be and can get them the ball.He also has developed his perimeter game to keep opponents honest," said Foster. He has really worked on getting better with his ball delivery to the post.He sees the floor very well and can make passes that are difficult to see," Foster continued. "Ty started for us some as well last season. He is a very tough player and will hit the glass hard.He has worked on scoring with his back to the basket," noted Foster. "Cade will be another young man we will count on to score for us this season. He is a tremendous outside shooter and has worked on taking the ball to the basket. I look for big things from him this sea-

son," said Foster. There are three sophomores on this year's team. "Jake is an excellent shooter. He spent the off season working on his ball handling skills and it is showing. Kevin is a very quick young man. He is working on his ball handling and shooting. Cason is a great athlete. He can shoot and makes it hard on defense with his length," said Foster. There are seven freshmen on this year's roster. "Connor has a great work ethic and a willingness to listen and learn. He works hard on anything that you tell him to and has an eagerness to improve," said Foster. "Ryan is a very long athletic player. He works very hard on things that you give him. He is developing his inside game. Josh is developing into a great point

ty coach this season. Over the past three years, Coach “E” has been instrumental in the success of the Lady Jets basketball program. Her leadership, involvement and commitment are greatly appreciated. “Coach E is an experienced player and coach. Our friendship and trust, on and off the court, make us a great team,” said Radhika Miller. For the past three years, Coach Travis Issacson has served as the Lady Jet's conditioning and strength coach. He will be assisting with all teams this season and continuing his efforts as the strength and conditioning coach. He has a relentless work ethic and dedication to our program," the Lady Jet head coach said. According to Radhika Miller, “I am thrilled to have Travis on the sideline with us this season. He will be instrumental in our success through his coaching efforts on and off the court." Coach Kim Cram-Torres, former Cumberland County native, will also be assisting the Lady Jet basketball team this season. Her experience and knowledge will bean asset to the program. According to Coach Radhika Miller, “Kim is high-energy and highly motivated. Her knowledge of the game and position fundamentals will be very helpful this season.” The Lady Jet coaching staff are hard-working and committed to doing whatever it takes to help achieve the goals of the team. In addition, the Lady Jet basketball team would not survive without bus driver Steve Dishman, scorekeeper Greg Maxwell and director of basketball operations Lynn Burgess. Poppie Steve has drove the team for the past three years and his support and efforts are greatly appreciated. It is a blessing to be able to share this experience with my dad. Basketball has always been a part

of our lives. My mom and dad never missed any of my games when I played and they continue to support me as a coach," added the veteran Lady Jet coach. “'Poppie Steve' makes those long bus trips more enjoyable and special. I am thankful that he and I get to enjoy the success of the Lady Jet Basketball program, together." “Greg has kept the scorebook for CCHS basketball for three years, but his roots in basketball go back to years of playing and coaching basketball. He was my former coach at South Cumberland Elementary. Coach Maxwell used to spend hours with me in the gym working on post moves and playing one on one," she said. "He would never let me win.” Burgess is the symbol of Jet pride and is the director of basketball operations for the Lady Jets basketball team. “Lynn is dear to our team and him being a part of our program is a blessing. He is also an expert when it comes to basketball and loves to get the team firedup before the game. We are thankful we get to share our success and experiences with Lynn,” she said. "His loyalty and support for the Lady Jet basketball team and CCHS definitely make him CCHS's biggest fan." Moore began his career as the seventh- and eighth grade coach in 1979, also teaching algebra 1 and general science, and the next 14 seasons as freshman coach. He was also the girls freshmen assistant for 12 of the next 14 years. He also taught algebra 1, pre-algebra, general math, sixth-, seventh- and eighthgrade math, with early bird algebra I and an early bird enrichment eighth-grade math class at various times. During those 14 years, with the ninth grade back at CCHS in the fall of 1994, he remained at Martin to coach all four basketball teams — fifth- and sixth grade boys and girls and seventh- and eighth-grade boys and girls for the next

three years, while teaching eighth-grade math. He retired from coaching in 1997 for nine years, but returned to the bench coaching the junior varsity and varsity boys for the last three years at CCHS the last three years. He and his wife, Sandy, have a daughter, Candace, who is a 2012 graduate of CCHS and was a member of the cross country team and a manager for the Lady Jets basketball team.

Scott Davis, a 1987 graduate of Cumberland County High School, will be a volunteer assistant for the Jets junior varsity/freshmen this year. He played elementary and freshman basketball at Martin under former coach Jimmy Inman and Moore, respectively, before playing at CCHS under former coach Mark Bray. He was a boys assistant coach at Martin for three years, and has coached

girls AAU basketball for seven years. He is vice president of the basketball booster club, and he and his wife, Beth, have a daughter, Bailey, who is a junior on the Lady Jets basketball team. Spencer Rogers enters his first season as a volunteer assistant while attending classes at the University of Tennessee.

Members of the SMHS varsity basketball team are, from left, front row, Patrick Sealand, Mikey VanWinkle and Trace Cagle; second row, Mason Houston, Jake Parsons, Zack Denton, Nathaniel Sexton, Tristan Norman, Chandler VanNatter and Ashton Doris; and third row, Coach Neil Capps, Taylor Orme, Mason Baucum, Brandon Thomas, Collin Russell, Shade Foster, Gage Spence, Parker Hill, Coach Jess Raby.

Panthers to go through a period of adjustment With the return of only two starters to the line up, the 2014'15 version of Stone Memorial boys basketball team will be going through a period of adjustment this season. There will be a lot of opportunities for several experienced players to step up to the challenges that await in District 6AAA with the departure of Tyler Yoder, Justin Simmons and Luke Matthews. The Panthers will have five seniors this year led by three-year starter Gage Spence. "Gage has been a staple in our line up for a long time he has a ton of experience and he will be looked to guide the Panthersthis season," said Coach Neil Capps. Another returning starter is Brandon Thomas. "Brandon brings a lot of experience and toughness to our team. He gained valuable experience last year and will need to elevate his game this year with added responsibility as a leader," said Capps. In the post, Collin Russell will

bring an inside presence that will allow us to score around the basket. "Collin has great hands and feet and has nice touch around the basket and in a tough district 6AAA post scoring is a must. Parker Hill has made tremendous strides from the minutes he played last year and will look to put that experience to use this year on the perimeter. His focus last year was to play defense and now he will have to make a major contribution on the offensive end for the Panthers going into his senior campaign," added Capps. The final senior is Taylor Orme. "Taylor like all of these seniors is a tremendous young man and bundle of energy. Taylor has spent a lot of time working on his game over the summer and fall and will be looked to, to give the Panthers a much needed scoring and rebounding punch," added Capps. The junior class consists of Mason Baucum, Shade Foster, Chandler VanNatter and Jake

Parsons. "Mason is very basketball-savvy player, he can face up and knock down the three or post up and score from the block. That versatility will be an asset this season. Shade will bring a muchneeded boost in size and strength to the Panthers this season. Shade is 6’5”, 250 pounds and has nice ability to finish around the rim and can protect the rim on the defensive end," added Capps. "Chandler is a bundle of energy and effort. Chandler is a guy that every team needs; he will dive in the stands or get on the floor for a loose ball creating extra possession for his team. Jake is making his debut with the Panthersthis year. Jake is a good athlete with a good attitude. Jake has a good motor and is disruptive on defense," continued the Panther mentor. The sophomores this year are Tristan Norman, Nathaniel Sexton and Mason Houston. "Tristan and Nathaniel have very little varsity experience, but they will be key contributors for

the Panthersthis season. Tristan has the ability to knock down the outside shot and attack the rim. Nathaniel has nice offensive tools. He can hit the three and create his shot off the dribble," added Capps. "Mason will also make his debut for the Panthers this season and I have been very encouraged by his progress and his ability to shoot the basketball." The freshman class will be made up of a large group of players "who have shown a great willingness and dedication to work hard and make sacrifices in order to improve," according to Capps. "There is much work to be done and several challenges ahead for this class but SMHS is excited to have this group." The team includes Mikey VanWinkle, Zach Denton, Ashton Norris, Adam Swanson, Preston Buck, Jackson Hughes, Seth Sherrill, Brandon Houston, Bryce Cook, Cooper Wyatt, Andrew Allred and Chase Welch. Leading the team will likely be VanWinkle at point guard.

"Mikey brings maturity, great effort and talent, along with other freshmen contributors in Zach and Ashton, who had good summers," noted Capps. "Other guards working hard are Adam, Preston, Jackson, Seth and Brandon," added Capps. Doris will be a leader in the post, along with Cook, Wyatt, Allred and Welch. "This year’s Panther squad will rely upon defense and playing the game with competitive toughness. Two things that have been the cornerstone of this programs success in recent years," noted Capps. The Panther coaching staff is very please to have Jess Raby on the sideline for his third season. I am very fortunate to have coach Raby on my staff. He has a tireless work ethic and has a vast knowledge of the game. The best part is that he is a better person than coach and sets a tremendous example for the young men in this program.

SMHS coaching staff adds Tipps, Sloatman By Ed Greif

Chronicle sports editor

When the Stone Memorial basketball teams open the 2014-'15 season, the "top cats" for the teams will have a new addition, as Greg Tipps joins the staff as the Lady Panther coach. Neil Capps returns as the Panthers coach, along with assistant coach Jess Raby. Tipps graduated from Moore County High School in 1992, where he played in three state tournaments for the Raiders. Following High School, he enrolled at MTSU in Murfreesboro, where he graduated with a bachelor of science degree in health and physical education in 1999. He returned to Moore County as an assistant boys coach, winning a state championship. His next stop was the head girls coach at Coffee County where he coached the Gatorade State Player of the Year in Amber Benjamin. He later returned to Moore County to become head coach of the girls team, which won two district championships and a sub-state appearance in 2006. He was the head girls coach for the Loretto Lady Mustangs for seven years. He took the team to the state

tournament three out of the last four seasons and advanced to two final four appearances. He and his wife, Paige, have two children, Brendon, a fifth grader and a member of the Homestead basketball team, and Baylor Kate, five months. Capps was elevated to head coach for the Panthers, after Coach Mike Buck resigned at the end of the 2011-'12 school year, and Walker replaced veteran coach Tim Smith who stepped down at the end of the season. Capps has been a fixture in Cumberland County basketball, having played for the 1990-'93 Jets, who qualified for the substate. After high school, he played basketball at Roane State Community College for Randy Nesbit, and later transfered to MTSU, where he finished his education in Tennessee history. He taught for seven years at CCHS and served as Buck's assistant for 12 years (seven years at CCHS and five years at SMHS). He graduated from Tennessee Tech in 1999 with a degree in history and geography, and is married to the former Jessica Beaty, who was a standout Lady Jet and a former MTSU Raiderette. "I wanted to be a head

ger. She provides us some size on the perimeter and is a good three-point shooter. We are going to need Lexi this season. If she continues to work hard, she will be able to help us out in some key spots. "Sam is a tremendous athlete and flashes some good scoring ability. As she gains experience, we hope she can become a consistent weapon on the offensive end. Sammy Jo, like each member of our team, is a tremendous young lady. She has great character and really is a team player. Sammy Jo has been

coach since I was in junior high school. I feel blessed and honored to have this position. I look forward to working with these young men and watching them them develop as athletes and young adults. I would like to thank the plethora of people who helped me over the years to attain my dream, and most importantly, my Savior, Jesus Christ, and my family," he said when he was named head coach. Capps will be assisted by Jess Raby. Raby came to SMHS from Sequoyah High School and is a former Oliver Springs standout and Walters State Community College star. He is in fourthyear as a teacher/coach at SMHS, where he also coached the golf team. "This is the third year Jess has worked with me on the boys staff. I am very fortunate to have Jess on my staff. He has a tireless work ethic and has a vast knowledge of the game. The best part is that he is a better person than coach and sets a tremendous example for the young men in this program," said Capps. Tipps continued, "Tessa has a chance to play a lot of minutes for us this season. She makes shots and is a gym rat. I'm really excited about what she will bring to the program, not just in the future, but this season as well. "Caitlyn is a very good athlete and loves the game. She's learning a new position this season, but she

will work hard at it and has a bright future for us. Jessica is another quality young lady we have in our program. Tipps said, "Lacey is a tremendous athlete and I anticipate her having a good year for us. She's playing a new position and I think her determination and toughness will serve her and us well as she transitions to more of an inside player. "Riley has really worked hard in the weight room and on her shooting. She is a post player who can step out on the flooor and make the open shot. Riley needs to be a strong rebounder for us this season. Allison has an amazing work ethic and really goes hard in practice. She exhibits the type of toughness we want in our program." Sophomores Hailey Coudriet, Brittany Brun, Lexi Hinch, Sam Grey and Sammie Jo Wyatt will be counted on to fill very important roles during the upcoming season. "Hailey has chance to be a very good player. She is versatile and does a lot of things well. As she gains experience, I expect her to really take off and become more consistent with some of the ability she flashes during practice," continued the coach. "Brittany will be playing inside and on the perimeter for us and, like Hailey, will have a chance to grad a lot of playing time if she continues to work hard each day. South hoop teams to defend county championships By Ed Greif

The South Cumberland boys and girls are the defending Cumberland County elementary champions, but the eight other schools — Brown, Crab Orchard, Homestead, Martin, North, Pleasant Hill, Pine View and Stone — will have something to say about that this season. Brown Lance Beaty coaches both the boys and girls this year. The Lady Bears had three eighth graders and 10 sixth graders on the roster for the annual "Meet the Jets" night at CCHS Nov. 7, while the Bears had five eighth graders, two seventh graders, two sixth graders, fifth graders and three fourth graders are listed on the boys roster. The team is returning several starters this year, as well as several girls who played last season. There are also a host of new faces on the team who look to add a new and different dimension. The theme throughout the summer and preseason has been simple — do not settle for good. Be great, small things matter, compete every possession and finish plays. Though the challenge is immense, the future of Crab Orchard is bright," said DeLorenzo. "The community and parents are supportive. SMHS wrestling enters its ninth season Nov. 25 Coming off their first season in the AAA division, the Stone Memorial Panther wrestling team opens its ninth season Nov. 25 at home against Coach Brian Parker’s alma mater and Class A-AA traditional state champion Hixson. They will also wrestle Bearden High School. “Wrestling Hixson in our first match each year lets our kids know where they stand early in the season. We get a better idea of what we need to work on to compete with the best teams,” said Parker. Parker returns 10 lettermen and three state qualifiers from last year’s squad. Chris Hassler, a former CCHS wrestler who Parker coached, will be taking the place of Nathan Hoffman as assistant coach. Hoffman took a head coaching position in Virginia to be closer to family. The lettermen who will be leading SMHS wrestling into their ninth season are Anthony Alegria, Chandler Brickle, Jacob Flannery, Joel Hernandez, Connor Crockett, Juan Loza, Justin Johnson, Dakota Karge and Chase Eichner. Other returning wrestlers who should make an immediate impact include Marco Hernandez, Joe Staton, Steven Amsden, Blake Hicks, Justin Woolfrom, Logan Livesay and Brandon Burnett. Sophomore Anthony Alegria had 15 varsity wins last year as a rookie and almost qualified for state. He also claimed the SMHS Most Valuable Freshman award. He hopes to double those wins and make it to state this season at 126 or 132 pounds. “Anthony has become very tough at leg-riding just since the end of last season. Just when you think you have a takedown, he ends up with the points. He will do very well this year,” said

Parker. Marco Hernandez is a sophomore who will break into the full-time lineup at 126 or 132. He had a few wins for the varsity last season. “Marco is another one who has improved tremendously since the season ended. He is one of my hardest workers and he will give Anthony a run for his money everyday in practice,” added Parker. Junior Chandler Brickle and sophomores Flannery, Joe Staton and Amsden will all be fighting for the starting spots at 138 and 145. All of them saw a little time in varsity matches last season. Flannery won 10 varsity matches. “There is a lot of potential in this group and they will probably be stealing starting spots from each other all season. Chandler's ankle pick and cradles are dangerous, but the other three guys don’t give up easy. I think their battles for the starting position will be great for them and the team,” continued Parker. Sophomore Blake Hicks had several wins at varsity as a rookie last year and placed third in the junior varsity regionals. He is primed to win the varsity spot at 152 or 160 and break 20 varsity wins this season. “Blake started off slow last year but finished very strong. I think he will make a big impact this year now that he knows the basics. He will only get better,” added Parker. Joel Hernandez is a senior with only one year of experience; however, he had 22 wins as a junior rookie, which is amazing, according to his coach. He should easily break 30 wins at 152 or 160. “Joel works really hard in practice and knows he doesn’t have as much time

Lady Panther wrestling team begins seventh season The SMHS Lady Panthers wrestling team starts its seventh season in 2014. They will be participating in various girls’ tournaments in East Tennessee, Knoxville and Nashville before going on to the regional and possibly state competitions. Coach Brian Parker has two returning wrestlers including a state medalist coming back as well as a

couple of new prospects. “Most people don’t realize that this is now an avenue for girls to compete against girls in a tough, discipline-driven, individual sport,” he said. State qualifiers Laura Napier and Achaia McDonough will be returning from last year’s team. "Laura is a two-time See LADY, page 10C

as others to make his mark. I see him get better every day and I’m excited to see what he accomplishes,” said Parker. Juniors Logan Livesay and Justin Woolfrom and sophomore Connor Crockett may be battling for starting spots at 160 or 170. Livesay was out with an injury last season, while Woolfrom got a few matches at 160. Crockett wrestled varsity all season at 170 pounds as a rookie and won a few matches as he learned the sport. Parker said, “These guys will gain a lot more experience as they fight for a starting spot this year. Crockett took a beating as a rookie in a starting position, but he has come out much better for it. He has worked very hard this summer and has emerged a leader and a good wrestler.” Juniors Juan Loza and Brandon Burnett will be challenging each other for the 182 pound class this year. Loza came on strong after Christmas last year when he dropped to 182 pounds and won 14 varsity matches just in the second half of the season. “Juan surprised us all with many wins in some big matches. He doesn’t surprise me any more because he has been working extremely hard since the summer to be the best he can be, and it shows every day in practice,” stated Parker. Junior Justin Johnson is a two-time state qualifier who had 40 wins last season. He beat several stateplace winners during the season and won two matches in the state tournament. Johnson plans to place in

state this year. “Everyone knows Justin is a great athlete, he is on his way to being a great wrestler. With a little work on some of his technique, he may make it to the state finals this year,” stated Parker. Dakota Karge is a senior who had 32 varsity wins and qualified for state last year at 220 pounds. He looks to hit 40 wins this year while winning the region. “Dakota came on very strong last year. He found a few moves he liked and used his aggressiveness and strength to dominate many opponents.I think he can easily win the region and set himself up to place in state,” Parker said. Christian Staton is a junior who is stuck behind three of the best wrestlers in the upper weights. He was third at the JV Regionals last year. He will see some time at varsity when he is needed to fill in. Added Parker, “Christian is a great kid with a great attitude. He would start at a lot of other schools, but for now he continues to work hard until he can start fulltime.” Senior Chase Eichner had 32 varsity wins last year as he qualified for the state at heavyweight. He plans to win the region this year and position himself to place in state. “Chase is even bigger and stronger than he was last year. With a few improvements to some technique and some new moves, I think he will meet his goals and surprise some of the ranked kids at the state,” continued Parker. Out of the 30+ wrestlers on this year’s squad, the

Panthers have acquired a class of freshman hopefuls as well as some upperclass rookies. Among those are freshmen, Dylan Kemmer (106), Mario Juan (106), Jordan Bowles (113), Xavier Findley (120), Avery Lynch (126), James Tewell (145), Elmer Estrada (160) and Christian Gabbard (220). Other rookies include sophomores Nick Griskenas-Mucilinic (145), Ethan Oliver( 145), Jared Debord (145), Austin Seiber (160), Ethan Pierce, Evan Oliver (170) and junior Ben Kindred (285). Junior Alec Moore (220) will be joining us as a transfer from CCHS. “We are already seeing some great potential from

a lot of these new guys. Kemmer, Juan, Bowles, Tewell and Estrada have all looked really good in open gym. Findley went to camp this summer and won 7 of 9 matches. The Oliver brothers have really taken to the sport and show a lot of promise with their work ethic. We are excited to see what they can accomplish over the next few months,” Parker noted. “We look forward to making a run for a state berth in the AAA division. This young team has the potential to be top two in the region if they are willing to work hard and stick with it. Good luck to all of our wrestlers and the Panther wrestling team," Parker concluded.

McNeely to lead Jet wrestlers Entering into the third year of his head wrestling coaching tenure at CCHS, Wes (Mac) McNeely is excited for the future, "All summer we have had kids in the gym getting better," he said.

Last year the Jets had several wrestlers that were seconds away from qualifying for the state tournament. This year is a different story. "The dedication that the kids have shown is evident

in the amount of time they spent this summer in the complex and attending clinics and camps on their own, these are the things that will make a difference in February," he said. Each year under Coach Mac, the wrestling program has grown and that trend will continue this year with

"Achaia qualified for state as a freshman and plans to place this year," Parker added. “She is getting a little more aggressive which will translate into more wins. an expectation of 20 wrestlers being on the roster. "With the addition of girls wrestling being added to the list of TSSAA events this is just another opportunity for the students at CCHS to succeed athletically, but its gonna take a lot of work to get them to come out because it is such a new concept here in TN," said Coach Mac. "The girls program here has been going since I got here and I really enjoy having a girls team, watching a quite shy young lady or a peppy cheerleader step on the mat and control their opponent in a dominating fashion is exciting, not only for the coaches, but the fans as well." This year the wrestling Jets will be with out Coach Kenneth Davis, who took a job closer to home to help with some family medical issues. "Kenneth will be missed. It didn't feel the same this summer with him not in there, even the kids have commented about it," added Coach Mac. However, it didn't take long for the Jets to find a new assistant. This year Pat Monahan will be assisting in the duties at CCHS. Monahan is new to the Crossville area and is bringing a great deal of passion for the sport with him, plus the conditioning and discipline levels McNeely tries to get from the wrestlers on his teams. "It was great timing for Pat to come to us. I was worried about getting someone to help me out and I walked in the mailroom and saw a note from him wanting to talk about helping. I called and the rest is history waiting to happen. Pat is a little rusty with his wrestling; however, just getting out of the US Army is a plus because he still has the physical training and drive to get better, which our kids see also."
