Details related to the new, electronic kiosks Are there any other school districts which have developed electronic kiosks? The Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) is one of the first K-12 school districts employing this technology in this way. Why did MPS develop electronic kiosks? • The kiosks are a unique way for the Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) to take our schools on the road. Family involvement is key to student success. We are trying new ways to help families engage and participate in their child’s education. •
MPS developed electronic kiosks to serve as a unique tool for families and community members on-thego to interact and get school information at their convenience while out and about.
•
We also realize that some families may not have access to the internet. This tool gives families access to information and services on the MPS website.
Where are the kiosks located? • The kiosks will be placed at the Brian Coyle Community Center, the Cub Foods store located on Lake Street and the New Families Center, Educational Services Center and Student Placement Services. •
We see the three MPS locations are temporary placement locations. Our goal is to place kiosk in high traffic areas that are open 24 hours a day 7 days a week to MPS stakeholders and potential families.
How many kiosks did MPS purchase? •
The kiosks were partially funded by a voluntary public school choice grant. These federal dollars are distributed to public schools through the Minnesota Department of Education.
•
The cost of each kiosk is $9,900 for the machine, software, and maintenance insurance.
•
MPS plans to place at least five additional kiosks in other areas of the city before June 2012.
Who can use the kiosk? • • • •
Content is available in the English-, Hmong-, Somali- and Spanish languages. Families are encouraged to try using the kiosk as a new way to engage in their child’s education. Community members can learn about the recent happenings at local schools or get involved. Prospective families can learn more about our schools and how to enroll.
What type of information is accessible via the kiosks? • • • • • •
