Comp Congratulations to Daniel Lovelace from Auckland NZ who was out pack bombing his local hills with mates when he came unstuck and decided to have a little wrestle with the gutter. For his fresh meat, Daniel won himself a set of Ronin Trucks, a few sets of Blood Orange Bushings and some Vicious Griptape. As always you gotta be in it to Bloody Win It! Dear Dr Spice, I`m a teen male with a bit of a rare hormone problem that I need some urgent advice on. For the last few months I`ve been having an embarrassing situation arise whenever I downhill. It seems the bigger the bomb and the scarier the challenge, the more I have a wood problem. What I mean is I get erect when I skate! I`m fine just cruising around the streets but as soon as some hills present themselves I get all chubbed up and it`s becoming a real drama to the point I`m scared to bomb, especially with mates, never around chicks and I`m scared I may fall and gnar up my gearstick. I need some relief from this situation, can you help me doc`? Downhill Wood. Dear Downhill Wood, Ahh, the joys of youth! I remember the thrill of sliding slopes with the old ‘Jatz Crackers’ swingin` in the breeze, compass pointing true north all the way! It`s not so rare as you may think my young friend. In fact, some see it as a rite of passage, a sign of true stoke, of manhood. Sure it`s not great for aerodynamics but in today’s modern tech age, thinking outside the box is king so I`d look at it from a ‘glass half full’ point of view ... for instance, you have somewhere new to anchor your Gopro! Positive angle! Seriously though, I`d say you are going thru a very natural hormonal phase and you`ll find it will settle down and like a good Jedi, achieve control you will, hmmm! Regards Dr Spice. Deer dokter spise, I not go for skool in thre yeerz all i do iz skat. i lik fotoz in magaseen butt i kant reed storeez, can u hellp me too get smaarta/ Tad Dulor Dear/deer Tad, I feel you buddy so let me put it as simply as possible, DUM IZ 4 CHUMZ!! Rigardz Dok Spise. Dear Dr Spice, Nipples, nipples, nipples, nipples, nipples, nipples, nipples, nipples, nipples! I like nipples! I scrape mine along the harsh deck grip on my board as I think of other nipples. Do you like nipples and can you show me yours? Shoana Peake Dear Shoana, I do! I really do like nipples too! Okay I`m gonna need your address, some candles, battery cables, liquid nitrogen, Silly Putty, the claw of an eagle and a ball of string. Let`s do this!! Yours in tweakage, Dr Spice.

Words | Api Ihaia What began with the question - “What’s better, Aeras or Ronins?” lead to Stephen Thornburn and I doing a full blown truck review on 21 sets of varying precision trucks. To keep things fair and just, we sampled every truck on an Acid Addict running a 25.5 inch wheelbase with Venom Barrels, 90a thane all ‘round with a 93a board side at the back, and kept the the trucks angled at 45-48 degrees. Over the next couple of weeks we set to work pushing the trucks for all their worth, both downhill and freeriding. Like true scientists we blew things up, tested boiling points, and wore white coats - but you don’t need to be concerned with the tech, here are the findings. Some of the trucks were surprising, both in how they

overcame geometric problems and how they rode. For example, normally when a truck has rake the axle is set off. Buzz trucks countered this by moving the pivot, whereas Munkae just altered their original rakeless truck by moving the seat down, which was for the best because rakeless trucks suck. We had a few more semi old school trucks like Bear Smokies, Kooky Trucks, and a pair of Kahalani trucks as well. The first two had fairly outdated geometry fair enough considering they aren’t made anymore - whereas Kahalanis have kept in production and stayed relevant without making any major design changes, and still make virtually the same truck they did 10 years ago. Some of the cheaper trucks like

Freeride Shots: Rider | Api Ihaia Photos | Keegan Balfour

Riders | Api Ihaia followed by Johannes Malchow & Sam Honeyfeild Photo | Stephen Thornburn

the Reys felt pretty good to ride if you have them on positive rake, while some of the more expensive ones didn’t feel as good as we might have hoped. That being said, every set of trucks felt pretty comfy to ride after a few days ... just some were sleeping in the back seat comfy, and some were sleeping in the back of a van with a mattress comfy. And as for whether Aera or Ronin trucks are better? I know what I like better for myself, but there are way too many variables to set one winner in stone. At the end of the day, use the information here to aid your decision before spending the big bucks. No amount of stats can beat getting out there and riding the trucks for yourself.

Rider: The ever slim Api ihaia Photog: Jacob Lambert

Hi, I’m Api Ihaia and I am a board-riding bum from Dunedin, New Zealand aka Gnartearoa. I spent most of my teenage years at the beach riding waves and since I lived on a hill, riding a skateboard down the hill to get there became the next natural progression. During high school I started snowboarding and that fills my winter months when I don’t skate because the weather is lame. I became qualified as a snowboard instructor and this has played the biggest role in my longboarding and how I approach the sport. During the summer months I am usually travelling around NZ skating and working wherever I can. Attending races is a big thing for me because it means meeting new riders and catching up with mates and I get to test my skills against other riders. Strategy is my main focus when racing - analysing what is happening, what the other riders are doing and what I need to do is where I get my biggest thrill, especially when it works out in my favour. Longboarding has taken me all over NZ and I have managed to skate with most of the local crews on most of our best known hills. Next I hope to travel around the world with my boards attending some races and chasing some waves, snow or hills everywhere I can.

Maybe the girls think i’m weird now with a nipple on my shoulder?

KELOID SCARRING Words | Nick Foley

It’s just like in the 1977 movie ‘Rabid’ and if you’ve seen the movie, then you too will pray you never have to visit … DR KELOID! They might start as an innocent little bump around your innocent little flesh tunnel but if you don’t do something about it right now you might end up looking like the love child of Freddy Krueger & Davy Jones from Pirates Of The Caribbean! A keloid is an overgrowth of dense fibrous scarring that may develop during skin healing. The red-purplish scarring extends beyond the borders of the original wound. They can form as a result of physical trauma, surgery, abrasion, burns, piercings, body modifications and even tattoos. Sometimes the scars form because of infection, immune hypersensitivity, irritation or genetic factors. They aren’t usually harmful, except to your chances of picking up if you’ve got a lump of flesh hanging off your ear lobe. If you think it might be a pimple, DON’T SQUEEZE! So unless you’re a tribal warrior with combat scars representing victories in battle and the astral bodies of your ancestors’ resting place, the following are a few natural ways to avoid skin sausages:

Clean the affected area with hot water and sea salt and then rub in a couple of drops of tea tree oil or lavender oil every day. • Aloe vera can also help reduce the size of the keloids over time, or squeeze out the oil of a Vitamin E capsule and massage into the area. • Take vitamin C, bioflavonoids and zinc to increase wound healing and decrease inflammation. Rose hip oil also contains vitamin C. • The mineral silica is internally an important factor in skin regeneration and may help to reduce scarring when used over time. Silica sheets can also be used topically on the area. • If none of this works you can see a doctor for corticosteroid injections, freezing (cryotherapy), laser treatments, radiation or surgical removal, however sometimes the scarring comes back even worse after some of these treatments. Whatever you do don’t google ‘keloid and a rubber band’ or ‘when scarification goes bad’ you have been warned.

One of Downunder’s real deal shredders would have to be Gabe Gwynne - whether he’s got a board under his feet and camera in hand, or he’s balancing on a slackline while flying his DJI Phantom Quadcopter, he’s always ripping shit to bits. ‘Travelling with the right kit is something you learn over time. Pack light, pack tight and be ready for anything’ ... Gabe Gwynne Sector 9 Lacey, 48 Aera K3s, Sector 9 70mm 78a centersets For that sweet, soft, leathery goodness - my hands love them. The perfect kneepads if you’re like me and don’t like wearing kneepads. The bag for the travelling bro. Waterproof, tough stiches and zips, and plenty of sneaky pockets. Travel size 8-weight fly fishing rod and a small assortment of flies, leaders and tippets. A random assortment for different applications. If you like to sleep in comfort no matter where you are, get one of these. Essential for travel, dont leave home without it. Small, light and waterproof. You never know when you’re going to be stuck somewhere without a place to sleep. 1/10th the size of a normal towel but it does the job just as well - magical shit. The power of flight, this piece of badass flying machinery has a FPV video goggle setup, a GoPro 3 stabilising gimbal and can hit over 60kph. Black edition. Keeps the GoPro stable while it’s in the air. These give me a live video feed from the quadcopter while it’s flying, perfect for follow runs. Some sort of warm head covering is always nice in colder climates. Only required when travelling in Japan. For ultimate fun times, especially when there’s a pool or river nearby. Keeping the face fuzz in check. A good knife is your best friend on the road - keep it sharp and oiled and don’t let people make rain wheels with it. Make those stinky pits funky fresh ... everyone benefits. Keep them chompers clean and cavity free. You don’t need dentist bills while travelling. Get your lurk on. For emergencies. This guy holds about 200 books but weighs about 1/5th of an actual book - perfect for long trips. For keeping safe always. Essential for travel ... don’t leave home without it. The powerhouse with 2x 32GB cards and 5 spare batteries. Follow camera with the awesome flippy LCD screen. Super tough original issue jacket - makes a great pillow too. For those I-feel-like-a-pirate days - aaarrrgghhh! For editing, footage dumping, map checking and general communicaton. I went through about 5 drives before I found this one - it’s built like a brick shithouse. Perfect for safety meetings. Works great as a pre-skate yoga mat, also good for getting changed in public. Shirts, two pairs of shorts, two pairs of jeans, a set of thermals, socks and NEVER ENOUGH UNDERWEAR! Tough Aussie canvas keeps all my camera gear and clothes dry and safe no matter what. Essential beats to zone out with. 21 Photo | XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

The People Have Spoken: There's a lot of excitement about the Arbiter KT ($109)

“That concave! Looks like a 5-star resort for the feet.” “The idea that directional boards need concave to change throughout the board : It’s so obvious but rarely done right!”

“Those wheel wells doe

“This board looks so good I could picture myself eating cereal off the concave.”

“The added kicktail just takes it to a whole new level! ”

“It’s the bees knees, those wheelbase options! ”

“Short wheelbase for the win.

“Business in the front, party in the back.”

“That kicktail is steezy McGee, and that tub concave and graphic...oh my.” “The subtle kicktail and machine drilled wheel wells leave you cruising, carving and kickflipping down the gnarliest of hills.”

Sk8 everything. Wantoks wat’s crackin? I know that most of u will understand when i say “skate everything”. Those of you who don’t, then ya missin out on pretty much some of the best things the sport of skateboarding has to offer. It’s where it all started back in the Dog Town days. They were inventing new things and exploring new terrain daily, much to the displease of some of the public and often being referred to as ‘Urban Guerrilla’s’. This movement pushed the level of riding to heights never seen before and with it the sport of skateboarding was concreting its position in an industry that was about to boom! The world was their playground and i guess the only thing that’s different this day and age is that it’s mostly accepted and throughout the longboarding community, the majority are somewhat respectful to members of the public. But this isn’t about longboarding. It’s about skateboarding! It’s all turning wheels. It’s about sk8in everything! Why limit yourself to one style? There’s no one style of skateboarding. If you think that doing an ollie, pumpin through some cones or jamming hard wheel tech slides is gay or not longboarding, then you’re narrow-minded individuals! I ask u this. Are your fukin eyes painted on? Open your eyes and see the world for what it is. Where it all started. Within our scene, some of the world’s best skaters started or participated in different realms than that of the longboard. Just to name a few, Kyle Martin: Hard Wheel tech slide, Kevin Reimer: Hard Wheel tech slide, James Kelly: Transition, Louis Pilloni: Transition, Zak Maytum: Slalom, Jackson Shapiera: Slalom, Kody Noble: Street. The fact that these guys are so good at what it is they do is because of one thing, they skate everything. They don’t limit themselves. They see the sport of skateboarding with an open mind and I’m here to help u do the same! I see so many kids trying to learn how to do stand-up slides because they think that that’s longboarding? A longboard’s just a longer skateboard isn’t it? Have you ever put your hands down and done speed checks? Humans crawl before they can walk! Can you turn a skateboard? No? Why try do a stand-up slide if you don’t know how to turn? The carve is where the slide is all initiated. It’s also a means of controlled braking. You don’t know this? Go set up a few cones and carve around them for a few hours. Go and learn! You can ollie your longboard? Epic bra! That’s hard. Can you ollie a shortboard? What about a mini? Go and learn! Can you drop in? No? Go and learn! Learning hurts sometimes, that’s the nature of the beast. If it was easy to skate everything then all of us would be doing it, but we’re not! Challenge yourselves to learn some new stuff. IT WILL IMPROVE YOUR SKATING! Don’t limit yourselves to butter pavement either. Go ride some rough, haggard shit. Tear your wheels to bits doing so. You will thank me for it the next time you’re in California riding Tuna with Louis or bombin hills with Striker in the Great White North, BC. Grass ride the shit outta every park that’s got a decent little section of green stuff to get rad on! Have you tried standees on grass? It’s epic! A much softer fall eh! So it’s been pissin down rain for weeks and you’re sick of getting couch pitted right? Get out and turn wheels on the slick outside. It’s a great opportunity to fine-tune and learn some stuff in the reduced friction conditions. Don’t be naive in thinking that longboarding is just doing big skids and going down hills. It’s so much more! To those that have heard the words I’ve spoken, you guys are in for some epic times. Some truly frothable moments! Get out and enjoy the challenge of pushing your riding to new levels! Express your own individuality! It’s all turning wheels isn’t it? Skate everything! .............. fukin frothin, im gonna go turn some! ................... Yatedawg
