SU GA R FO RMULA EXCLUSIVE BLEND - Includes a sucrose component that significantly improves performance & durability, while delivering a measurably smaller petroleum footprint. CRAZY DURABLE – The most resilient wheel line on the market, lasts three to four times longer, making the designs way more sustainable for both your wallet and our planet - skate more, spend less.

RESIST THE URGE - Does not easily break down and thane, delivering massive slide performance. Skate the wheel not the powder for more accurate release and controlled hook-ups.

DON’T BLEED SPEED – The Sugar Formula’s resistance to “thanning” insures that you maintain, not bleed speed during slides and corners – skate faster, roll farther, scrub less speed.

GRIP YOUR LINES – The Formula reduces the amount of powdered thane between you and the road, providing more confident cornering and the ability to drive harder into your turns.

FIRST STEPS – The Sugar Formula is a small but important step toward reducing the petroleum we use in our wheels and leave on the road. The Sucrose component is safer and more biodegradable.

How much time do you spend with technology? Words & Illustration | Kurt Nischel

It’s 3:16am and once again I find myself staring at the ceiling because my brain is still working overtime doing kick flips; trying to work out how best to fill the next 118 pages. You see, in order for me to make this little book in your hands, I regularly go into a state of mind or condition that those around me refer to as being pixelated. Some people suffer from terrible vices and habits such as: smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol, drug addiction, anorexia or obesity … I suffer from pixelation. There’s a point one reaches, when you realise that you’re completely pixelated, you might be there yourself and not even realise. •

Do you find yourself staring or pushing pixels every day between 8 and 16 hours?

Do you surround yourself with machines of pixelation, like laptops, smart phones, digital SLR cameras, desktop computers, scanners, printers, hard drives, etc, etc?

Do you see pixels in your sleep? And do they wake you up at night?

Has your skating or board riding slowly but surely gone from as much as possible every day to once a week maybe, because you’re constantly just fulfilling your pixel addiction?

Does the pixel rule your life?

Well, thanks to Russell A. Kirsch (inventor of pixels) I am well and truly pixel pitted, and I don’t think there’s much hope of me coming out of the realm in the near future …

Face Value ‘To take something at face value is the belief that what the person is saying is truth and rather than looking for the hidden meaning it’s not understanding the bigger picture or motive behind what the person is actually saying’ You will notice in this issue there are quite a few faces … some young, some old, some mechanical, some large, some small, some colourful, some black & white, some illustrated. They display emotion with expression, they all have deep feelings for one thing in common, skateboarding. Imposter It’s not often that things really piss us off here at the mag. But recently certain people have treated us with such utter disrespect it makes us wonder why we even bother. We like to be honest with our readers, cut through the bullshit and tell you as it is; without compromise. There are some pure cunts exploiting our beloved community. No industry is exempt from scumbags who see a chance to make money and bend over anyone in the way. Unfortunately there are people in our industry pillaging at any cost. These fuckwits don’t skate or have conveniently only just started, know nothing of the culture and disrespect the ones that have created the scene. They weasel their way into the industry with the sole intention of making money. They don’t give two fucks about keeping the vibe of the culture alive and growing it into what most of us want it to be, something we’re proud of. We need to collectively oppose the ones exploiting us, it’s simple, dont support them, don’t associate with them and basically shun these pricks. If you are one of these cunts we speak off, go shelf a lubed up baseball bat and stop fuckin’ up the culture so many of us have worked hard for, you know who you are.

Landyachtz - Charlie Horse - Deck www.landyachtz.com

Riviera - Noble Roots - Deck www.skateriviera.com

Spanning the size gap between the Kanthaka and Tesseract, the Overland is designed for the all-round rider seeking a happy medium between a shorter technical double kick and a thoroughbred downhill freeriding machine. Features a directional shape, mild radial concave, subtle wheel well flares, a beefy kicktail, smaller/steeper nose, functional multi-grit griptape pattern, moderately stiff flex, textured TPU bottom, and wheelbase options for reverse-kingpin and conventional trucks.

The Sector 9 Downhill Division range for 2014 consists of six different models, each with a point of difference of their own. Louis Pilloni has finally got his own pro model, the ‘Arrow’ and the rest of the top mounts and drop through boards have all been refined by their team to bring you the most versatile range of boards out there!

www.loadedboards.com

The Noble Roots deck from Riviera is purpose built for skating in the streets. Kody gives a nod of respect to his roots with subtle visions from the South West combined with his take on an iconic image we’re sure you’re familiar with. Pick one up and hit the streets today! The WIM version has an added tail. Restless… Ride More!

Straight to the point, the Charlie Horse has everything a simple topmount should have. Deep CNC-cut wheel wells for maximum clearance, multiple wheelbase options to get dialed in, and the perfect amount of concave with subtle W for maximum performance. If that’s not enough for you, the Hollowtech core keeps the Charlie Horse light as a pony but strong as a Clydesdale. Just don’t get lost in Charlie’s eyes for too long … Specs: Length: 35.5” Width: 9” Wheelbases: 23 1/4” and 25 3/4” Deck Weight: 3.3lbs Rocker: Mild W concave Construction: Hollow Tech Technology 7 plys Canadian maple sandwiched between Tri-axial Fibreglass Sublimated

If you like to skate everything and don’t want to pick up a different board every time, then look no further. The Arbor Shakedown is the perfect hybrid skateboard. Offered in three different sizes; the 33”, 36” and 39” gives you the option to size up for speed, or size down for tricks. Find what size and wheel base is right for your stance and style. New components you will find are the new Caliber standard truck in matte black and the all new Arbor Bogart sucrose wheels. Artwork on the board is produced by Hunter Patrick.

Rayne - Savage - Deck

www.raynelongboards.com

This shaped board is long overdue. Harking back to the days of the Globe slide series a bit. A gert big “pool” shaped double kicker. We are particularly fussy about our double kick shapes, especially the nose. We like to be able to look down when riding and see an aesthetically pleasing outline for our feet… A nice square nose. Getting back to our youth with a graphic reminiscent of that era… 35.75” x 9.25” 18.4” Wheelbase, Double Kick 7 Ply Canadian Maple.

A classic board now has a new shape... IT’S SYMMETRICAL! The newly released Rayne Savage (symmetrical Avenger) keeps Rayne’s pressed-in 3D wheel wells to create added room for large wheels and the ergonomic bends you know and love to help you find and hold your feet in place better than ever before. The Savage uses the same fat bottom construction as the standard Avenger too, in a symmetrical shape to help you choose the path you want to take wherever you are headed!

The Burner is halfway between the Grifter and Steezestoker in length but is directional rather than symmetrical. It’s got a wider tail area and small hips over the rear wheels to aid in foot placement. Rocker concave and CNC wheel wells make this board pretty much an evolution of the Pinnacle as well. Thinking about it … Its a mind meld of shapes. 36.5” x 9.8” Wheelbase 23.25” Shortest x 28.35” Longest 8 Ply 4x Construction, Rocker Concave, CNC Wheel Wells.

New Gear On The Block Why are these Paris pro trucks better? Because they have custom graphics carefully thought up by a few of your favourite pro riders that’s why! Matt K’s are on top featuring flowers and a pentagram? Yes, a pentagram because Matt is a dark and evil ripper. Next down is Kody Noble’s truck featuring iconic imagery of most of the things that he loves … beer, weed, skulls, etc … He loves it all. Lastly, Amanda Powell’s which are very self explanatory. Maple leaves!! Cuz, she’s from Canada eh!?!.

Caliber II - Trucks

www.calibertruckco.com

The second generation of Caliber, one of the biggest skate trucks in downhill, has taken a serious step up in performance. These are a few features that have been tweeked to make the Caliber II. Updated inner / outer steps on bushing seat, pivot with tighter tolerance and updated chamfer, circular kingpin hole with updated diameter, reinforced baseplate, and thinnerpaints for tightened tolerances.

Arbor have just released their all new Sucrose Formula wheels, they are more tasty then you think. Why is that? Well sucrose is most commonly known as a sugar. But when a compound is created, with less petroleum, this means less thane left on roads. Not only will it save the planet, but it will save some money in the pocket. The sweetest thing about this wheel is how smooth they slide. Look out for all four wheels - The Bogart 61, Mosh 65, Vice 69 and the Summit 71.

The Stream 7’s sleek aerodynamic design is an I-beam at its core, which is the strongest way to remove material when dealing with a force from a given direction. In developing the Stream 7 Skoa spared no expense in machining. Through more recent designs, Skoa wanted to stick with the idea of simplicity to achieve the aesthetic and geometries that they were looking for with limited machine time. Team Shredder Matze Ebel was inspired to make tweaks to the Stream to meet his needs for Maryhill and the result was this: the Maryhill Spec. Stream 7

Health-conscious clinchers are still advised to exercise caution when performing Kegels. Recent clinical studies have shown that overexertion may be linked to gradual stiffening of ordinarily supple urethane tissue. If you find yourself turning purple in the face (or elsewhere) while rolling your Kegels, be aware that you may be at increased risk of exorbitant roll speeds, crispy slide consistencies, and unusually slow wear. Have fun with your Kegels. Stay relaxed and go with the flow. The sensation of speed may be scary, but remember: sensation is the name of the game.

Dear Dr Spice, I hope you can help me. I have just started going out with an awesome chick. She is the bomb! Sexy, sweet and we just can’t keep our hands off each other. We have ended up having long, long sex sessions in every position imaginable. Shit, I reckon we could teach the Kama Sutra a thing or two! Problem is, my dick is starting to get sore from all this fucking. She gets wet, neither of us have any STDs, but my dick is starting to get all red and sunburny, it even swelled up in a big blister one time. What can I do? Yours, Dick Hertzalot Dear Dick,, You don’t really have a girlfriend do you? As for the blister and painful penis, I suggest you put some lube on the palm of your hand before engaging in intercourse with your, ahem!, “girlfriend”. Regards, Dr Spice. Dear Dr Spice, Can you help me get on? Me dealer say that there’s no green to be smoked ‘til May when the fucking harvest comes in. It’s fucked as I am hanging for a smoke, and I can’t fucking wait! Is there anything else besides weed that I can get off on? I am fucking dry mate ... I’d smoke camel turds if they’d get me smashed. Help! Dutchy Greensgone. Dear Dutchy, Could I put forward some things you might like to try whilst waiting for your May harvest to come through. You could play a lot of X-box, zone out to some music, go for a walk and try to notice how bright all the colours are around you, draw a picture that nobody else understands, play a musical instrument and try to make chords that don’t usually go together, go together! You could sit and stare into the void and ponder the meaning of life. You can try all these things whilst waiting for your dealer to come through with the green. Then you can get yourself lusciously stoned, and well, do all the things you do when you’re stoned. Thoughtfully Yours, Dr Spice. Illustration | Thor Mclean Dear Dr Spice, I am in prison now as I was buying a lottery ticket at the newsagent while standing next to a chick whose uncle was working with a dude who built a house for a guy whose brother sold eggs to a dude who sold spare car parts to a girl who goes out with a guy who once helped an invalid across the street. That invalid has a son whose brotherin-law is a bikie and now I am facing six months solitary confinement under Queensland’s VLAD laws. I am no bikie, how do I fight this shit? Yours Incarcerated, Ian Tightspot. Sorry Ian, do I even know you? Where did you get my mailing address from? If you have a life question or just need some nice advice from the Doc, send an email to drspice@ heelsidemag.com who knows you might win something!?

A picture can tell a thousand words Words & Photo | David Pang

FROM FROM THE THE VAULT

This photo is from very early 1980s, of ACT skate legend and now Aussie music sound engineer, Tim Whitten and taken at the original Woden skate park bowl based on the iconic 'Winchester' pink bowl. Tim was one of Australia's best (and smoothest) skaters. The photo sums up so much about this era for me: • Great skater • Duane Peters deck • Extra contemporary bands added by time 'Joy Division' • Batman sticker • Woden skatepark • Wheel set up (Bones cubics) like Steve Cab had • Road Riders sticker • Checkers added (aka Steve Olson) • One of the first and best photos I have taken (but no foreground coping)!
