SURE

BRUSH UP, MOVE ON

HEADS-UP GRAMMAR

With dependable starting points and enough practice, you can forget about Starters. SURE activates the language students already know, so they can brush up their knowledge and move on. Elementary begins with a motivating review of A1 language, and Pre-Intermediate starts with a confidence-boosting brush up of core A2 grammar. SURE makes the CEFR a helpful friend, using its objectives as building blocks to ensure continuous and reliable language progression.

In SURE, students actively engage with grammar from the very beginning with strong contexts showing grammar in action and clear rules of use. Lively Grammar Hubs combine traditional grammar exploration and intensive practice with heads-up listening, reading and speaking tasks.

ACCURACY

BONUS GRAMMAR

Accuracy is at the heart of effective language use and SURE puts the focus on getting it right. Innovative Accuracy spreads refresh and review all language and structures students have studied so they can sharpen their accuracy – a must for exams.

Teachers can tailor their teaching to the needs of the students with optional grammar points in Bonus Grammar. Specially chosen after extensive research, they reflect the extra grammar points teachers most frequently choose to add. In the following level these points are presented in depth.

6

A1/B2

FLUENCY

COMMUNICATION FOCUS

Language users need to be able to speak fluently and confidently. SURE builds this into the course. Regular Fluency sections develop students’ confidence through challenging and involving activities which really allow language acquisition to happen naturally. So with SURE, students learn to get their message across.

Language is for communicating and SURE puts communication at the heart of the lesson. Communicative competences become easy to learn with entertaining dual-function video/audio presentations, and lots of meaningful interactive practice.

NATURAL LANGUAGE

VIDEOS & DOCUMENTARIES & VOX POPS

Jam-packed with accessible but real language, the dialogues in SURE are written by award-winning screenplay and ELT short story writer Martyn Hobbs. Natural language and authentic contexts are guaranteed!

Language becomes real for students when they can watch and listen. Video stories follow British and American friends in the UK and the USA as they hang out together. Documentaries offer a window on English speaking culture and lively vox pops showcase a range of speaking styles.

Beginner & Intermediate levels available from January 2015

7

SURE

LIVELY VOCABULARY Regular, reliable and lively vocabulary work means that students find the right words every time and enjoy learning them. Focus ranges from core lexical sets, key words and lexical chunks in Word expander to everyday and teen expressions in Small talk.

CULTURE DOSSIER

WORKBOOK

With its exciting range of culture-rich articles and informative Culture boxes, students are always immersed in culture in SURE. But that’s not all. Culture Dossier is an in-depth section with six themes – heritage, identity, rituals, entertainment, society and icons, to give students a project-based opportunity to explore crucial global topics thereby developing critical thinking skills.

The Workbook provides unit by unit, and module by module practice in both grammar and vocabulary with a range of varied, contextualised and staged exercises. At the end of each module there is an exam-friendly reading task and essential training in core writing text types, allowing students to prepare steadily for internal and international exams.

CLIL & COMPETENCES

GRAMMAR REFERENCE

From science and technology to music and art, SURE helps teachers and students train for CLIL with its range of content-rich, topicbased themes and activities in both the main units and Culture. Communicative competences and soft skills such as team work and presentation skills give students more than ‘just’ language.

An in depth grammar reference gives students a place to find everything they need to know in one place. The alphabetical ordering and careful cross-referencing to units and lessons makes this a truly useful resource for their learning experience.

8

A1/B2

SKILLS An inviting range of articles, websites, fact files, news stories, interviews, radio programmes, quizzes and questionnaires integrate the four skills to give students a motivational boost. Signposted skills practice is also carefully calibrated throughout the course on each page, giving students regular changes of pace and focus.

EXAM TRAINING

CHECK YOUR PROGRESS

SURE prepares students for international exams right from the start. The exercises are marked with K (Cambridge KEY), P (Cambridge PET) or FCE (Cambridge First Certificate) or T for a range of Trinity exams. SURE tests use many of the same exercise types as the exams, with a rich online offer of interactive exam training, including listening and tips for success.

The module ends with a Check your Progress section allowing students to constructively assess their achievements through short tasks and simple CEFR ‘I can’ statements. A wide range of international exam compatible tests (Basic and Plus) are available for the teacher to administer (see Tests & Resources + Testbuilder CD-ROM/Audio CD on page 5).

PINBOARD Unique to SURE, Pinboard is a moment for students to just relax and have fun with English. No exercises, no tasks, just puzzles, intriguing facts, How to… boxes, quotes and cartoons - pure entertainment!

It was sunny for nearly a week and Mary found many more green points in the secret garden. She pulled up the weeds around them so they had space to grow. Sometimes she imagined the garden in summer. One morning as she was skipping slowly along the long path, she thought about old Ben Weatherstaff. He was often cross but she liked him. At the end of the path there was a gate. She decided to go through it and explore the wood• on the other side. She opened it and went through. Suddenly she heard the sound of music. It was coming from the trees. What was it? She was very curious and went to find out. A boy of about twelve was sitting under a tree. He was playing music. He had blue eyes and red cheeks. A squirrel• and two rabbits were watching him and listening to the music. When he saw Mary he said: ‘I’m Dickon. I know who you are. You are Miss Mary.’

Chapter 1

‘Tom!’ No answer. ‘Tom!’ No answer. ‘What’s that boy doing? Tom!’ The old lady went to the door and looked out at the garden. No Tom. ‘Tom!’ There was a noise behind her. She turned just in time to catchs Tom by his belts and stop him. ‘What were you doing in that cupboard?’ ‘Nothing.’ ‘Nothing! Look at your hands and your mouth. What is that?’ ‘I don’t know, Aunt.’ ‘Well, I know. It’s jams. I’ve told you forty times that I’ll beat you if you don’t leave that jam alone. Give me that stick.’ ‘Look behind you, Aunt!’ She turned round quickly and lifted up her skirt, and the boy ran away. His Aunt Polly stood surprised, and then laughed. ‘What a boy! I really don’t know what to do. I should beat him when he does wrong. But he’s my dead sister’s boy, and I don’t like to hit him.’

This is the perfect place! Holly looks away and waits. When Eco is finished, she takes a plastic bag from her pocket and picks up the dog mess•. Yuck!

The Boy Who Could Fly Shillan was a small island. At the southern end there was a little harbour• where boats arrived. The cottage where Dr Reed lived was there, too. Michael’s house was in the east of the island. Behind the house there was a wood of pine trees• called Laird’s Wood and a lake called Goose Loch. In winter many ducks and geese• came to swim and feed• on the lake. The southern part of Shillan was quite flat and covered with grass, but the north was hilly. In the northwest there were two hills: Castle Hill, which got its name from a ruined castle that stood on the top it, and Crag Hill, which was very rocky. Lots of wild flowers grew on the island – some of them were quite rare.

Soon Michael knew every centimetre of the island and he could recognise most of the flowers, birds and animals that lived there. At first he missed• the company of other children, but as time passed he got used to playing by himself. Sarah and George loved their new life. They no longer had to work in the shop and had time for their hobbies. George grew vegetables in the garden and Sarah painted pictures of wild flowers. When she wasn’t painting or doing housework, she made clothes for Michael. Sarah designed an extra-large jacket for him, which was easy to put on and which covered his wings.

After graduation• I spent several years travelling around the world, teaching English to finance• the trips. I then went back to England to do a postgraduate• course at London University. I came to Brazil in 1976 and have lived and worked here, teaching and writing, ever since.

When did you start writing stories? My first story was published in 1999. This is now my tenth book.

Stories are around us all the time, often begging• to be written, but we rarely take much notice of them. Stories seem to find me, rather than me consciously looking for one. My inspiration often comes from a real event.

What is the message in this story? There are several messages in the story, but I think the most powerful one can be summed up• in the words of the English teacher in the film Dead Poets Society - “Seize• the day! Make your lives extraordinary!” We can change things. We can live the life we want and realize our full potential.

Have you any other stories planned for the future? Yes, I have a file full of ideas for stories.

Many of the activities are photocopiable and accompanied by multimedia. “As someone who has been involved with English Teaching Professional since the very first issue and, more recently, with a series of Teacher Development books, I think materials that provide extra support for teachers are hugely important. For this reason, I have to express my admiration for Helbling Languages for publishing their Resourceful Teacher Series at a time when a lot of cutting back is taking place. Not only that, they are producing them swiftly and efficiently, and in such diverse areas as interactive whiteboards, self-esteem and art.
