STUDENT’S BOOK The full-colour Student’s Book is organised in 6 main units. Each of the units is presented on 6 pull-out worksheets and follows a tightly structured order to guarantee an optimal and consistent learning routine: • chant; • TPR (Total Physical Response) action stories; • song; • story/story song; • listening comprehension; • thinking skills.
All tasks are outlined on the back of each worksheet along with any relevant song lyrics and scripts for easy lesson management and to keep parents up to date with what their children are learning.
All worksheets expand and develop both pupils’ cognitive and fine motor skills through activities such as colouring, tracing, drawing, matching, sorting, etc. There are also sections on festivals and celebrations (birthdays and other special occasions), plus an Audio CD with full versions of the songs and chants.

TEACHER’S BOOK
TEACHER TRAINING VIDEO
CARTOON DVD
The Teacher’s Book offers easy-to-use step-by step suggestions on how to teach very young learners successfully.
The Teacher Training Video demonstrates clear ways of teaching English to very young learners in either kindergarten or at private language schools.
A clear introduction gives a short overview of relevant findings from cognitive psychology and research into early language acquisition.
It shows author Herbert Puchta, working with various groups of very young learners in different schools.
Fully animated cartoon stories engage and motivate children to learn and remember key words and phrases. Children are captivated by and identify with the stories as their favourite characters come to life. Story cards, Audio CDs and Worksheets support and build on the cartoons to create a powerful and personal learning experience.
The Teacher’s Book was written in close cooperation with experienced classroom teachers and all activities and ideas have been piloted and perfected for optimum use in the classroom. The Teacher’s Book provides a variety of ideas for games and a host of practical tips and pointers. It contains 2 Audio CDs (with all the songs, chants, stories, action stories and listening exercises) as well as a DVD-ROM with an editable letter to the parents for each unit, and photocopiable Worksheets for Extra Lessons, plus a training video for the teacher.
Additional short films explain how to use TPR (Total Physical Response) action stories and songs through miming and acting. The Teacher Training Video is the ideal companion for the Teacher’s Book. It offers you lots of practical tips on how to get the most out of your lessons and shows excellent easy-to-use ways of teaching English to very young learners.

2 cLAss cd3 TR24 We are going to read some extracts from the most famous scene in the play. After the ball, Romeo hides in the family orchard. Unaware that he is there, Juliet comes out onto the balcony and speaks about her love. Read and listen to the scene. Match the paraphrases with the speeches. 1 She is leaning her cheek on her hand. I wish I were a glove on her hand so I could touch her face. Should I speak or carry on listening? 2 Your name is the problem, but what is a name? It is not the 3 real person; it is just a label. If Romeo had another name he would still be perfect. Romeo get rid of your name and take me instead! Why are you Romeo? I want you to change your name so we 4 can be together. If you can’t, then I will change my name. I can see a light in the window over there. Juliet is like the 5 sun and the window is like the east where the sun rises.
O romeo, romeo! Wherefore art thou romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name: Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, and I’ll no longer be a Capulet. [aside] Shall I hear more, or shall I speak at this? ‘tis but thy name that is my enemy. thou art thyself, though not a Montague. What’s ‘Montague’? It is nor hand, nor foot, Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part Belonging to a man. O be some other name! What’s in a name? that which we call a rose By any other word would smell as sweet. Grammar that comes alive with CD-ROM and teacher support! Top Grammar, by Rachel Finnie, Carol Frain, David A. Hill and Karen Thomas, is a reference book for learners of English at all levels, from Basic to Upper-intermediate (A1 to B2). Top Grammar covers all the main grammatical areas of the language. Top Grammar has a special lexical focus for each of its sections. Top Grammar is made up of a Student’s Book and CD-ROM, and has a Teacher’s Guide including tests. Top Grammar can be used: • for individual study, for exam preparation, or whenever the teacher thinks the class needs specific training on grammar included in the syllabus; • by learners in a flexible way, to reinforce specific grammar points; • autonomously like other reference materials - dictionaries or the Internet. ‘Go and check in your grammar book’ should be a constant reminder of the teacher to the students.
THE STUDENT’S BOOK The Student’s Book contains 25 sections, each including several 2-page units – the rules on the left, the exercises on the right. Each unit focuses on one specific grammar theme. The rules are clearly explained and given in a graded sequence, starting from the basic standard form and structure of a grammatical item, covering the various exceptions, and further developing its communicative use in the spoken and written language.
TOP GRAMMAR CD-ROM The interactive whiteboard compatible CD-ROM includes: • lots more activities for each of the grammatical areas covered in the book; • authentic texts from English and American papers and magazines with exercises; • a special pronunciation section where students identify sounds and phonetics and practise key words.

A Christmas Present for Barney Bunny
Rick Sampedro Anna is very happy. It is a beautiful day. A perfect day for the beach. But Nina is not happy. She is on a boat, far from the beach. This is the story of two little girls, and how a place can mean very different things to different people.
Rick Sampedro It is a lovely day in the jungle. The grass is green and the sky is blue. The animals are all happy together. But, what is that? Now the sky is orange and there is smoke. Oh, no! There is a terrible fire. Can the little birds stop the fire? And who can help them?
Maria Cleary It’s Christmas Eve and Mother Bunny is busy getting everything ready for Christmas. The bunnies aren’t helping so she sends them out to play. Barney, the baby bunny, can’t play any of the games. But on Christmas Day Mother Bunny has a special present for him and all her other children.

One morning as she was skipping slowly along the long path, she thought about old Ben Weatherstaff. He was often cross but she liked him. At the end of the path there was a gate. She decided to go through it and explore the wood• on the other side. She opened it and went through. Suddenly she heard the sound of music. It was coming from the trees. What was it? Meet the Author Hi Rick, why did you become a writer? I want readers to become aware of• important issues. When people are aware of problems they can help change them. Changes can then make a better world for everyone. What other interests do you have? I love music and I have a huge• collection of music. I enjoy listening to different types of music, from classical to rock to punk. I really like songs with good lyrics• and a special message. I also enjoy the beach very much. I live in Galicia, in Spain, with my family. There are great beaches here and we love going swimming. Other passions I have include sport (rugby), travelling, reading and watching films, but my number one passion is my family. They make my life complete and I enjoy every minute I spend with them. What does cultural awareness• mean to you? In my own family we are related to lots of different cultures: Argentinian, Brazilian, English, French, Spanish and even Luxembourgian! I believe growing and raising• your children in a multicultural environment is an absolute bonus•.
Glossary • become aware of: learn about • bonus: positive extra thing • cultural awareness: knowing about other cultures
• huge: very big • lyrics: words of a song • raising: looking after children as they grow
Ending And in the end ... Who are all the bad characters in this story?
Everyone lives happily ever after

Holly’s New Friend
In her dream, Holly stops and listens. Lap, lap, lap. What is that noise? It sounds like water. Is it rain? But Holly can see the sky and it is clear and blue. Is it a river? Or a stream•? Lap, lap, lap. Holly walks towards the sound. Lap, lap, lap. The sound is quite loud now. It seems very close. Lap, lap, lap. Holly wakes up and rubs• her eyes. She isn’t dreaming. But she can still hear the sound. Lap, lap, lap. Holly turns on the bedside lamp and sees Eco. He is drinking from her glass of water! He wags his tail, jumps onto the bed and licks her face.
Real characters the readers can identify and grow with.
Before school, Holly takes Eco for his first morning walk. She feels very tired. It’s really cold and dark – and it is so early! But Eco doesn’t mind. He pulls on the lead, stops, sniffs•, pulls again, sees a black cat, tries to chase it and nearly pulls Holly off her feet•! He sees a huge dog and tries to play with it (the big dog is quite frightening). And then he chooses a tree. Eco stops, sniffs at the tree trunk, looks up, sniffs again, and makes a decision. This is the perfect place! Holly looks away and waits. When Eco is finished, she takes a plastic bag from her pocket and picks up the dog mess•. Yuck! 36

In the little town of Vevey, in Switzerland, there is a most comfortable hotel, which is seated upon the edge of a clear blue lake. The shore of the lake has a range of establishments• of this type. One of the hotels, however, is famous, being distinguished• from many of its neighbours by an air both of luxury and of maturity. In this region, in the month of June, American travellers are extremely numerous. There is a flitting• here and there of ‘stylish’ young girls, a rustling• of muslin• frills, a rattle of dance music in the morning hours, a sound of high-pitched• voices at all times. You receive an impression of these things at the excellent inn• of the ‘Trois Couronnes’. I hardly know what was in the mind of a young American, who, two or three years ago, sat in the garden of the ‘Trois Couronnes’, looking about him, rather idly, at some of the graceful objects I have mentioned. He had come from Geneva the day before by the little steamer•, to see his aunt, who was staying at the hotel – Geneva having been for a long time his place of residence. But his aunt had a headache – his aunt had almost always a headache – and now she was closed in her room, so that he was at liberty to wander about.

The cottage where Dr Reed lived was there, too. Michael’s house was in the east of the island. Behind the house there was a wood of pine trees• called Laird’s Wood and a lake called Goose Loch. In winter many ducks and geese• came to swim and feed• on the lake. The southern part of Shillan was quite flat and covered with grass, but the north was hilly. In the northwest there were two hills: Castle Hill, which got its name from a ruined castle that stood on the top it, and Crag Hill, which was very rocky. Lots of wild flowers grew on the island – some of them were quite rare.
Soon Michael knew every centimetre of the island and he could recognise most of the flowers, birds and animals that lived there. At first he missed• the company of other children, but as time passed he got used to playing by himself. Sarah and George loved their new life. They no longer had to work in the shop and had time for their hobbies. George grew vegetables in the garden and Sarah painted pictures of wild flowers. When she wasn’t painting or doing housework, she made clothes for Michael. Sarah designed an extra-large jacket for him, which was easy to put on and which covered his wings.

An interview with the author adds interesting information on how the story was written.
Meet the Author Dear Jack, tell us a little about yourself. I was born in the North of England and studied German and Russian at Liverpool University. After graduation• I spent several years travelling around the world, teaching English to finance• the trips. I then went back to England to do a postgraduate• course at London University. I came to Brazil in 1976 and have lived and worked here, teaching and writing, ever since.
When did you start writing stories? My first story was published in 1999. This is now my tenth book.
How do you think of your stories?
rarely take much notice of them. Stories seem to find me, rather than me consciously looking for one. My inspiration often comes from a real event.
What is the message in this story? There are several messages in the story, but I think the most powerful one can be summed up• in the words of the English teacher in the film Dead Poets Society - “Seize• the day! Make your lives extraordinary!” We can
change things. We can live the life we want and realize our full potential.
Have you any other stories planned for the future? Yes, I have a file full of ideas for stories. 38

English through ART 100 activities to develop language skills
Initially inspired by the 2009 IATEFL Conference Writing Workshop linked to works of art in the National Museum and Gallery of Wales, English through Art shows you how to take your students on a visual path of discovery which will stimulate and enhance their language learning. English through ART is packed with great activities on using art: • to stimulate talk • to approach established activities in new ways • to promote decision-making tasks in the language classroom • to motivate learners to talk about themselves • for vocabulary building and for writing activities. No prior knowledge of art or artists is required - even the most creative activities can be done by every student irrespective of their experience or background knowledge or ability. English through ART comes with a time-saving CD-ROM containing 50 full-colour reproductions to use alongside those activities that work best with images. The activities themselves can easily be adapted and used for different levels, from elementary to advanced, with teenagers, young adults and adults, in EFL/ESL, CLIL and Art and Design classes and for individual, small group and whole class work. Whether you need to pep your lessons up, stimulate your students, provide a sparkling 10 minutes at the end of the week or plan a truly engaging, term-length project, this is the book for you!
English through ART
English through ART brings together 100 highly varied, original, ready-to-use activities to foster real communication in English through imaginative responses to both artistic images and easy-to-do creative work. Writing Stories
Andrew Wright and David A. Hill are both teacher trainers and writers of inspiring teaching materials.
Writing Stories takes you and your EFL/ESL students off on an adventurous voyage of discovery to another world of learning. It starts with the idea of enhancing your classroom atmosphere in simple yet effective ways, and progresses to things you can do to help your students’ language learning become swifter, deeper and longer-lasting.
by David A. Hill and Andrew Wright Writing Stories is an exciting resource book for teachers working with both teenagers and learners of lower intermediate language level upwards based on the presumption that storytelling is a fundamental part of life and language learning.
Writing Stories
Writing Stories confirms the thinking behind the Resourceful Teacher series that there’s more than one way to recreate the fun and challenge of learning. This book capitalises on the idea that from our earliest moments we learnt from stories. We learnt about life and love, and comedy and tragedy; through stories we learnt not only about our culture and our language, but also we learnt the language itself.
Developing language skills through story making
WRITING STORIES
The activities in Writing Stories are most suited to teenagers, young adults and adults from the lower intermediate level upwards, but they can easily be adapted - like the stories themselves - for younger learners.
