Helena Knutsen-Nevison Date 15/10/18 Version Proposal: v1 Final Project DD3992 Design: Culture & Society 3 DD3000 Project title To Be Determined Outline your proposal – include any relevant questions to be researched and the key issue to be analyzed. Key Issue: Why are Graphic Design rules / principals relevant / important? Relevant questions: 1. What are the Psychological aspects surrounding graphic design that follows the rules vs doesn’t follow the rules? 2. How is the growth of technology changing the need for learning the rules? 3. What are the positives and negatives of technology growth impacting the principles? 4. What are the most prominent rules used in graphic design? For this project I intend to explore the world of graphic design rules / principals. I want to explore them in detail, understand them more, and figure out WHY they make the audience like the piece of work better because of the phycological impact. I also want to explore how technology is affecting these rules e.g. everything being automated. This will link into my honors project as I would like to create an editorial piece on the principals using a basic feature I have researched already; dots, lines and planes. These three aspects have been and can be used to explain graphic design principles and why they work and why the audience, in phycological terms, think they work within a design. This editorial piece would make the audience further understand graphic design principles through pieces of work I produce using these three aspects alongside body text, all combined to be pieces of design within themselves. I would also like to create a moving image based off of this to show the principles in an entertaining way, all combined, producing an honors project that’s aim is to educate the audience on the principals, why they work psychologically and how they can be put into simple forms and still work as a piece of design, the research also lightly touching on how technology is impacting these principles. I want to gear this project completely towards graphic design because that is what I want to do in my future after completing my BA honors course, this is why I think exploring the basics of graphic design and the process every designer goes through would be a perfect starting point to my career, but taking it that one step further when exploring ideas and creating them. Through this project I intend to look at how designers use: Line, Shape, Composition, Focal Points, Colour theory, Fibonacci Spiral etc, in their pieces of design while also exploring why these pieces work psychologically through: • GESTALT theory • Colour Theory • Golden Spiral • Principals of graphic design Prioritise 5 relevant keywords about your proposal... This is just the text from my proposal documents. I have included this so i can look back after my developments and see what I actually wrote that i wanted to do and to see if i achieve it at the end of the project.

version one of my proposal document didnt havea title, and needed changing because i wasn’t 100% sure where i was going with my project and how it was going to pan out.

design elements is the book i am reading that has inspired my overall idea, i need to develop it though so its more planned out overall.

This is my final proposal document. It lists everything I am planning to create and do within my project. This proposal document was really helpful to write because i was able to explain exactly what i was doing for this project, why i was doing it and what i want to get out of it at the end of the project. I was able to also create questions to ask myself when reseraching that will start of my project then i can see where it goes from there.

In this final version I have pictures of the main book that I was referencing for this project. This is effective because this book is what gave me the idea for my project in the first place, it is what started off my idea. Including these images really helps to explain my project as well to someone that might not get it. In this final version I was also able to list books etc I will be using and the main factors of my project. This final proposal document was really effective and helpful to me because I was able to write about my project and what I would like to achieve by the end of it, this has helped to clear it in my own head and also clear it up for anyone who wants to know about my project.

The first slide explained my honours in one sentence and then how I was going to achieve this Idea I had set out to do. I then went back to where my idea all started, coming from a book I had read on the design elements, I came across dots, lines and planes. These are the most basic form of design, these are the shapes that all design is made up of, and because I already knew that I wanted to do my project on the design principles, which are the basics of design, this idea fell into place perfectly. I wanted to create something that explained the design principles to an audience using dots, lines and planes to create simplistic graphic visuals that an audience could enjoy as well as be educated by.
I created a proposal presentation on Illustrator to explain to Shirley, Adam, and Ste what I was going to create for my project, where I was going to go next with it, the idea behind it and my goal by the end. This presentation explained everything and I was able to explain this to them and gather feedback for my project from them, which was really helpful because not only did i get to sit and explain my overall idea to them and get them to understand why I was doing what I was doing, but get their approval and feedback that could potentially make my project even better.

This idea really stuck with me, thats why I wanted to do it, the fact that i could explain the design principles through something so simple, yet there are plently of ways to create them into graphic pieces that are aesthetically pleasing whilst also informative gave me the idea of creating an editorial explaining some of the design principles with this base idea. To the right you can see reference i gathered for the type of idea i was going for. These simplistic black and white patterns using shapes really create intriging graphic pieces and this is what I aim to do.
I also explained what dots, lines and planes where in my presentation. They are the basics of design, every design is made up from these shapes. They basically represent aspects of designs. So for example, in maths, ‘x’ can equal or represent any number... dots, lines and planes represent the aspects within a piece, so dots represent the umbrellas you can see to the left, lines can represent typography and planes can represent dense pieces of design. It all depends, and the idea of dots, lines and planes is that you simplify the aspects so much into these shapes and represent any relationship the aspects can have with eachother on a page by them to make it simple. For example, if two dots are close together they create tension, take away the dots and replace them with whatever aspects youre working with for example two flat graphic characters, if they come that close together they create tension within a compostiion, and therefore should be moved.

Here I explained what the idea was and the reasoning behind it, I then explained why I wanted to do it and how it would benefit me and be a really good honours project to end my education and start my professional life in graphic design.
I thought about this alot and came up with that it will definalty enhance my skills in visualising an idea within design at the basics, it will provide a guide to the principles in a fun, visual way, i’ll be able to explore design in my own personal way and it will enhance my portfolio in terms of editorial, flat graphics and moving image. Overall, being an effective project for me to do.

I then ended the presentation on this slide that I showed them which had attached some of the ideas I was thinking of at the time for my moving image, as my moving image is going to be something that advertises the editorial that i create to be a sort of ‘teaser’ for it. I then outlined what will happen next with the project, im planning on continuing my reserach, exploring mixed media, and storyboarding my moving image and creating my editorial concepts.
Overall, this presentation really helped me to explain my ideas to shirley, adam and ste with prompts on what I was planning to do for it, which was really helpful because it really outlined what i was going to do and made me more confident in what i was eventually going to do. Throughout this project I am keeping a notebook for any thoughts and ideas I come up with and any feedback I recieve. In this presentation, i recieved feedback for it on what could potentially make it better, which really helped me because I was able to see improvements I could potentially make within the project overall. The feedback was I could put my explaination of the principles in to context, basically creating pieces of design that visually explained the principles, and that i could create an editorial piece that could be an actual educational book for first years within university to remind them of the principles before they start their university education so they know what to do at the basics of design. I really thought this feedback was really helpful and interesting and helped me to understand where I could and should go with this project. I am definalty considering creating an editorial that is for an audience of first year students to remind them of the principles in a fun, visual way, because alot of the time designers forget the basics of design and wonder why their designs look ‘wrong’ and a ‘bit off’, but this will help them proceed to their future of deigning in an effective way and at the same time help me create something that i love doing, editorial design and moving image, because my career path is going to be graphic design.
