UN YOUTH PLATFORM (cont)

22nd Aug. How wonderful it would be to see you there and have help from members of our own community. Joining UNA-YP as a member on our website is free, and becoming one of our volunteer staff, attending our events, or participating in our campaigns are all fantastic ways to enter the world of international affairs. It shows potential universities or employers that you are committed to its cause (especially with one of our coveted LinkedIn certificates), that you are willing to get learning, get working, and inspire other people like yourself. offer. The sun shone (sort of), the laughter flowed and the gardens were stunning. The group photo doesn’t really do justice to the enjoyment of the trip. We were all glad to be back to (socially distanced) face-to-face escapades – and for a chance to meet our two newest members in real life! This was an excellent venue for our first trip out as Gresgarth has a very big Sequoia tree (alongside a relatively small Soroptimist). In 1921, the first Soroptimist club, Alameda County was formed in California with over 80 business and professional women from in and around the city of Oakland. Their first project was to ‘Save the Redwoods’ – the great ancient trees which were being felled and the club lobbied the legislature, taking on powerful lumber companies and winning public support which resulted in a major portion of the forest being set aside as protected land that still exists today. Small steps, big difference.

100 Afternoon Delights

Then to keep the floral theme, by the time you read this, there will hopefully have been a wonderful gathering of the club members, family and friends in President Kathy’s garden for an afternoon tea (a word about my scone, by the way; yes, the jam goes on first). We really hope to have had a chance to sit out, soak up the sunshine, inspect Kathy’s

stunning garden, chat and of course, partake in a scrumptious afternoon tea. The afternoon will be part of our centenary celebrations, hence the 100 Afternoon Delights. Being the practical people we are, we are also planning to take this opportunity to put our heads together and compile our answers for the Rosebowl competition, but more of that shortly.

Rosebowl Competition

And finally, the annual Rosebowl competition. Another one held under restrictions – so no gathering of the clubs from the region. “Becky Beetle has been touring the Region …. Where has she been?“ We had a series of photographs of Becky on her travels around the region – we just had to identify where! Individually, we all could get a few answers but together as a team and with copious amounts of tea and cake – we are hoping to have managed to place all 21 pictures. Now whether we’re right or not is another thing, but we had fun doing it! We’ll let you know how it all went next month. Keep your fingers crossed for us.
