Fri 26th Nov, 6:00pm - 9:00pm Kirkland & Catterall Memorial Hall

She and Jackson were also involved with Arts Centre activities, including the wine circle and poetry group, so the programme will reflect this. Refreshments to round off the afternoon. We shall ask for donations for this year’s charity (the Multiple Sclerosis Society) as you leave. See you there.
Team Kirkland are ready to get you in the Christmas spirit. A fabulous festive market for the whole community with over 20 stalls selling unique handmade gifts, yummy treats and perfect Christmas presents, with delicious hot food and refreshments too. Hopes that Garstang Historical Society would soon resume its crowd-pulling lectures this autumn have been dashed.
Sponsored by Towers & Gornall Limited and Bella’s Coffee House. Raising money for Garstang Christmas lights and Garstang Scarecrow Festival.
The society last met for a lecture in March 2020. With the lessening of Covid restrictions it had been hoped to re-start sessions at its town centre venue in October.

Now, after reviewing the situation, the group’s committee has decided on a ‘better safe than sorry’ approach. Members have been told by email of the decision.
We have unfortunately had to postpone our November play, ‘Rumours’ due to a couple of our members not being well. We also wanted to be cautious going into the winter. The same play will be back May 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th in 2022. Looking forward to seeing you then. Stay safe and well.

Have you noticed the fantastic autumn display on the corner of Baylton Drive? Sophie the Scarecrow has been admired by one and all, so thank you to everyone involved in the yarn bombing effort. Autumn rain has caused delays in the normal clearing away of plants and containers but we battled on regardless and potted up a few plants ready for next year. You may have noticed that the Catterall Cart has been emptied of soil and will be removed for refurbishment over the winter. Thank you to Tim Hoyles for undertaking the carpentry work and the Bloom team for agreeing to repaint the cart. We have a wonderfully talented team of volunteers here, always ready for new experiences and challenges, and we have

recently agreed to look after the flower beds in the park. This is an exciting opportunity and we are looking forward to seeing Catterall blooming again next spring. The RHS Wyre in Bloom ceremony takes place on Wed 17th Nov and the results will be posted on our Facebook page. As the year comes to an end we gardeners always look ahead to the new year don’t we? In 2022, a few members of Catterall in Bloom will be running Catterall Gardening Club, which has monthly meetings, from March to September. More details to follow in the Focus Magazine next month. So if you’d like to spend an hour now and again helping to keep Catterall looking lovely, then please come and join our happy team. Keep gardening! Netta Parker 01995 605385

Jan Finch has recently decided to step down from running the garden club and has asked for volunteers to take over. I am pleased to let you know that some members of the Catterall in Bloom team have decided to take over running the club for a trial year. Although initially only taking on this responsibility for a year, it is hoped this will become a long term commitment. Catterall in Bloom is hoping to run the club in a very similar manner to previously, with monthly speakers from March to September, monthly raffles, a warm welcome and a refreshments break, with a return of the muchloved cakes. There may be some changes too, which will be announced nearer the time. The In Bloom Team

GREATER GARSTANG PARTNERSHIP Whilst there is a lot of work going on ‘behind the scenes’, there isn’t much to report at this point in the process. The board held a workshop in September to provide views on the ‘preferred vision’ for the future of Garstang Town Centre and its place at the centre of a wider ‘Greater Garstang’ area and to work up a number of strategic objectives. These strategic objectives will form the ‘headlines’ of what we, as a board, want to achieve and projects being considered will need to help to deliver one or more of those objectives. The next public consultation event will be held in early December but we are still working on finding a suitable venue. As soon as the venue and date have been confirmed we will make sure they are widely publicised so that as many people as possible can attend if they wish. We will also make sure the consultation material is available online for those who cannot or prefer not to attend an in person event. Our church building is now open for morning services on Sun at 10:30am and Thurs at 10:00am after the redecoration. Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to make this possible. CALDER VALE METHODIST CHURCH Once again we say a big thank you to all our bakers, helpers and buyers at our last Pop Up Cake Stall. We raised a magnificent £400 for Macmillan Cancer Support. In October we welcomed Mr Paul Bowden and some of his son’s Lego men to introduce his ‘all-age worship’. As well as a reading of Julia Donaldson’s book ‘A Squash and a Squeeze’. Our all-age worship on Sun 7th Nov will be led by Rev Keith Borwick. Mr John Bell, from the Iona Community, joined us in October. On Saturday afternoon he spoke about, and we sang our way through, some of the Psalms and their relevance for today. On Sunday his theme was ‘Caring for the Earth’ which went towards his ‘Thought for Today’ on Radio 4 the following morning. Our Sunday services continue almost as usual (with care as the numbers of Covid rise daily).
On Sun 14th Nov we will gather at the War Memorial in Calder Vale at 10:45am in readiness for the Act of Remembrance there. Our CAMEO (Come And Meet Each Other) group has started meeting again on the third Friday of the month at 2:00pm. On Fri 19th Nov we will share a cuppa, cake, and make a Christmas Card and, of course, there will be lots of chat. Do come along and join us. On Sun 28th Nov (the first Sunday in Advent) at 2:00pm we will have a family time (all ages welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult). This will be followed by the lighting and blessing of the Crib. Hopefully this year we will be able to share in mince pies and a drink. We are then in the run up to Christmas and hopefully more normal times. Whatever shortages there may or not be in the shops the Christmas message that Christ our Saviour is born will be the same. that have historic or heritage merit and contribute to the character of their area. There are many heritage assets across the UK which are not on the national designated lists but remain important at a local level because they contribute to the character of an area, have local historic associations, are local landmarks or are important to the local community. These could include an interesting local building or property, a cherished local memorial, village hall, mill building or simply an interesting historic feature like a village pump or a local park. Lancashire is a County that is diverse and rich in heritage and through this project we want to identify what characterises Lancashire and makes it a unique place to live, work and visit. The central aim of the Lancashire Local List Project is to better recognise locally important heritage assets throughout the County. To do this we want to encourage everyone to

We need residents, communities, groups, and societies throughout Lancashire to go out this autumn and identify local heritage and to nominate those candidate buildings and sites through our dedicated new website https:// local-heritage-list.org.uk/lancashire Additionally, you will be able to contribute to assets already on the Local List or listed by other people, by adding your own local knowledge. This can include photographs, documents etc. relating to that particular asset. The website also provides information about the project and guidance on how to contribute. FAIRTRADE (cont) Garstang Mayor Alec Allan for taking part, completing the survey, and accepting the recertification of Garstang as a Fairtrade Town. We have collated the results and the full report is on our website. The executive summary reveals that: •
95% of the public are very concerned about Climate Change and that 88% believe that current climate extremes are the result of human activity.
•
Interviewees felt that the top priority for UK Government policy should be to encourage the USA and China to reduce emissions of CO2. Meanwhile, the top priority for UK Government action should be to subsidise green energy alternatives.
•
The top priority for individuals should be to change shopping habits e.g., buy fewer products packaged in plastic and
buy fewer new goods. •
91% of interviewees agreed people should buy more Fairtrade products to assist farmers in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
•
There was unanimous agreement that Climate Change is a worldwide problem and needs action now.

GARSTANG WINE CIRCLE The wine circle held its AGM at the meeting on Mon 18th Oct at the Arts Centre. The chairman and treasurer presented their reports for the 20/21 season. They were able to report a success in keeping the group going using Zoom, and the healthy financial situation that would help a recovery from the consequences of Covid. The circle has a healthy membership, so a waiting list may need to be set up in the near future. The current committee was re-elected and Paul Hewitt was elected to join the committee. The AGM business was performed in the usual prompt fashion, accompanied by a Prosecco Superiore from Aldi. We were then able to concentrate on the evening’s main event where members of the committee presented some of their favourite wines. Paul Hewitt began proceedings with a white wine, a Solaris , from the Gwynllan vineyard near Conwy, recently visited by the circle.
This was followed by Alan Jefferson’s choice - a Gros Manseng from the M&S ‘Found’ collection. We then moved to the reds. Firstly Anne Whitehead presented a Californian Merlot from Lodi, which she paired with both cheese and chocolate! Rosemary Stokes’ choice was a Corbieres from the Wine Society and the final wine of the evening was an Amarante from the Montepulciano D’Abruzzo area of Italy, presented by Richard Harrison. We all had our favourites but it was agreed together they provided an excellent evening’s tasting. Food was prepared by Glynis Jefferson and Jackie Hastings - thanks go to them for an excellent spread. The next meeting will be at 7:30pm on Mon 15th Nov at the Arts Centre when Guy Pugh will present a collection of Argentinian Wines. Details from Alan Jefferson on 01995601 842. Rosemary Stokes

Rebecca Sudell Book Club At our first meeting in September we decided that in addition to suggesting a recommended book we would also explore other books on the same theme. The recommended book for October was ‘Plainsong’ by Kent Haruf and the theme was ‘small town America’. Most of the group had read the book and it proved to be a very popular choice, though there were different opinions about it! We also discussed ‘Where the Crawdads Sing’ by Delia Owens, another popular choice and quite a contrast to the recommended book. For our next meeting on Tues 9th Nov the recommended book is ‘The Black House’ by Peter May - a murder mystery on the Isle of Lewis. The theme is ‘Scottish islands’. Our final meeting of the year on Tues 14th Dec at 10:30am we will be discussing ‘All the Lonely People’ by Mike Gayle. They may ask you to self-refer to MindsMatter for wellbeing or psychological support. NHS Under Pressure As with all GP surgeries across the UK, pressure on our services continues to be at an unprecedented level. We are working tirelessly to meet the needs of our patient population and are regularly reviewing the ways patients can access our services. We are open (and we always have been). Speaking to many patients on the phone first prior to offering them a face-to-face appointment where needed has helped reduce face-to-face contact, preventing the spread of Covid. We are ensuring you get the right appointment with the right person as quickly as possible. GP practices have seen numerous staff shortages through isolation and illness, which has put additional pressure on remaining staff. Despite this, practices are offering 31% more appointments than they were before the pandemic began. Garstang Medical Practice has administered 2054 Covid vaccinations since September; handled 30,394 calls (June-August 2021); and carried out 56,525 appointments (JuneAugust 2021 - total includes both telephone and face to face appointments). GARSTANG RUNNING CLUB Myerscough 10 Sun 5th Dec 10:00am It’s good that life is returning to some normality, although still with some caution. The club was really pleased that the Half Marathon in September went so well. Although there were less runners than usual, 76 runners did take part and enjoyed the event – although some thought the hills were a bit steep! I suppose they are if you only run on Blackpool prom! Well, that won’t be a problem for the next race, which is the Myerscough 10 on Sun 5th Dec, as there aren’t any at all on that ten mile route! The race is hosted by Myerscough College and their excellent facilities will be available once again. Since the first race four years
ago the club has facilitated a short run for staff and students on Thursday afternoons. Although that has had to be curtailed due to Covid we hope it will restart in the New Year. The race starts at 10:00am with the first mile through the campus before heading out towards Sowerby and returning to finish outside the equestrian centre where excellent refreshments are served. All finishers will receive a Sandham’s Lancashire Cheese for their efforts. This year, for the first time, the club has organised chip timing so all runners will be able to have an official time for the actual 10 miles. If anyone wants to enter they will be able to on the day but online entries are available – just go to the web site. After such a difficult time the club is relieved to be able to hold races again and have

Guiding in Garstang is growing! We’ve been so proud to engage with all our Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers throughout the pandemic, meeting virtually and in person when possible.
All details are on the website and members can book onto the runs each week. Despite lockdown the club has increased its membership quite considerably, mainly due to well organised runs which cater for all, particularly new runners – all will be made welcome. Apart from that, the annual membership is only £20 – what a bargain! What’s more is you can take part and make sure it suits you before you pay! We have been able to welcome an unprecedented amount of new young members despite the restrictions. This wouldn’t have been possible without our fantastic group of creative and versatile leaders/young leaders, coming up with new ideas each week to run meetings virtually and to keep girls involved throughout lockdown. Now we are back running face-to-face guiding it is lovely to see everyone again and we wish to thank everyone for supporting guiding through this time! During lockdown we have run sessions online. Activities have included; bake/cook off, ready steady cook, spa night, treasure hunts, bingo, crafts, pancake night, magic night, festival night, making bunting to name just a few! We have also followed the Girlguiding programme, completing badges. Recently, 1st Garstang Rangers has enabled 23 young people to gain their Duke of Edinburgh expedition. This is a fantastic achievement. A huge thank you to all the leaders that helped make it happen and well done to the young people who completed their expedition come rain or shine! Units have also continued with badges and awards throughout lockdown. We have also been up at our local Girlguiding campsite (Guys Farm Activity Centre) along with other members of the County tidying up and doing lots of outdoor work to get the campsite back up and running, after being un-used throughout lockdown. 1st Garstang Rangers members, Nina Kennedy and Anna Walsh have recently donated another 125 comfort bags (hand sewn bags containing toiletries and care

Thank you to the leaders in the district for their support with this and to anyone that has donated items. At Christmas they also donated lots of toys and gifts to the refuge. The support we received from people in Garstang who donated items was overwhelming. So a huge thank you to everyone involved. As a district we have recently partnered up with the Co-op as a community partnership to support growing numbers of members and to help grow the local community. We are looking forward to working with them and thank them for their support. We are also on the lookout for adult volunteers to help in our units… this can be on a regular or flexible basis to fit around work/other commitments. If you choose to
become a volunteer for Girlguiding you are kept up to date with any necessary training and updates, a lot of which can be done online to fit in around other commitments. We have units in Garstang, Catterall and Forton and have Rainbows (5 - 7 yrs), Brownies (7 - 10 yrs), Guides (10- 14 yrs) and Rangers (14 - 18 yrs). If you are interested, please visit the following link to register and find a unit near you: www.girlguiding.org. uk/get-involved/become-a-volunteer/ register-your-interest Although we are recruiting leaders across all units, we are currently working with Catterall Village Hall committee to create space for a new Rainbow unit and are on the look-out for volunteers to help up with this! There was a lot to get through – social plans for group photos with our new neckerchiefs and to celebrate our four new members and, importantly, Christmas celebrations. We also had much to get through on our formal agenda items as well - marking our progress on commemorative plaques (to mark the Centenary of Soroptimism), tree planting progress, Climate Change questionnaires, WOW women, food bank collections, Mary’s Meals backpacks and ideas for community projects to highlight the climate change challenges being discussed at the forthcoming COP26 conference. Phew! We also took the opportunity to take pictures of our four members who have all joined since the start of the year. These will feature as part of our central organisation’s celebration of our Centenary year in a few weeks’ time. Louise is shown here, sporting the new neckwear.

GARSTANG TOWN COUNCIL (cont) Lancashire Association of Local Councils, Wyre Area Committee This committee meets quarterly and is attended by town mayor, Cllr Alec Allan. The meeting gives an opportunity to find out what is happening in the parishes across Wyre. In recent times the issue of anti-social behaviour has been raised and it is a topic that is Wyre wide. The executive are able to take issues like this up with the police directly. The October meeting was attended by the police and crime commissioner for Lancashire, Andrew Snowden. Open Forums Our mayor, Alec Allen and Cllr Sharna Mitchell would like to thank those that attended our recent open forum in Cherestanc Square. The event raised several ideas and queries that we are now taking forward. It is always valuable to be able to meet in person so we will look to make these a regular event. WYRE FLOOD FORUM
The consultants appointed by Wyre to report on the opportunities for Garstang town centre have presented their initial findings. An overwhelming majority of respondents favoured Scenario 2, which was the middle ground between the three options that offered modest to substantial change. They are now finalising their report which should be in draft form by the end of November with a further round of public consultation in late December or early January. This report is expected to highlight potential projects for the town centre which if accepted would then need to be put forward for funding applications.
The September Wyre Flood forum was a half and half affair with seventeen of us in the council chamber and as many again on Zoom. Most officers took the option of communicating from offices.

WYRE FLOOD FORUM (cont) completed to west ram of Garstang flood basin gates and minor repairs were being done to the east gate.
Avenue and Ainspool Lane is completed and will resolve flooding at the junction of A6/ A586 and Ainspool Lane.
Hambleton: work planned on Kiln Lane and Wardley’s watercourses was running late St Michaels: a bid had been made to resolve the erosion on Wyre embankment close to A586 bridge.
Preesall: Tom Myerscough, WRT, is drawing up a scheme to hold and divert excess water to protect Sunnyside. Also to inspect and clear surface water culvert under Cart Gate to improve discharges to Green Lane.
Churchtown: EA would be checking the nonreturn valve to ensure it shuts properly and is not leaking.
Forton: A new culvert constructed on School Lane and issues in Wallace Lane to be addressed in Q3.
GK referred to discussion on modelling the Ainspool. The latest report in 2014 does not include development nor importantly data from the 2015-16 floods. He said that all inputs into the Ainspool should be accounted for within the planning process and should not affect the main river flow, ie, the Wyre. Regarding two developments, not yet built, on the A6 with a total of 340 dwellings and commercial area, it was confirmed that planning consent was given for site at greenfield run off rates and should not affect the rate of flow to the main river. Asked if the 2014 report could be made available to members of the forum. EA will ask the question. A Wyre officer asked if EA planned to update the report with the 2015-16 data. EA responded saying the question had been asked and a reply awaited.

Great Eccleston: EA reported on a programme of work at Moss Side Lane Whites Brook, Inskip Brook, Wild Boar embankments and Catterall Basin. The agency is carrying out topographical surveys on both banks of watercourses and preparing designs to improve the system. Grass had been cut and weed cut planned. Paul Long of Wyre Council reported that he had met remotely with FLAGs and LCC reported works on Rawcliff Road by Hudson’s Farm involving an extensive repairs which will resolve flooding issues. WYRE FLOOD FORUM (cont) related issue and works are planned to clean a significant number of drains both public and private to ease threat in the whole village. Wyre Rivers Trust: The work up stream of Churchtown is greatly beneficial and has had a positive effect in reducing the risk of flooding downstream of Garstang flood basin. Report from Matthew Salter, Lancashire County Councillor for Wyre Rural Central. On October the 11th I visited Winmarleigh Moss, to see a ‘carbon farm’ run by the North West Wildlife Trust. Essentially by growing Sphagnum Moss on boggy land, carbon is trapped and stored in the soil, and the peat underneath can be conserved and start to restore. This may help with flooding as peat can store water in heavy rain, and slowly release the water, reducing the risk of flash flooding, and may be particularly helpful in upland areas. Reducing CO2 should also have long term benefits as climate change

BEN WALLACE MP (cont) can affect road safety and sometimes lead to localised flooding. With this is mind, could I please remind all constituents that there is a very easy way to report blocked highway gullies to Lancashire County Council. Just go to www.lancashire.gov.uk/roadsparking-and-travel/report-it and then follow the steps. The ‘Report It’ page can also be used to report anything from potholes to oil spillages on roads which the County Council are responsible for dealing with. While I know officers do check the highways, the fact is they can’t be everywhere so I am sure any input local people can give will help and ensure faults are fixed in a timely manner. Covid Vaccination Boosters I know some residents have now received the Covid booster and this is encouraging. I am confident our GP surgeries and the NHS will continue to roll the booster out effectively.
I would also like to thank all involved from the NHS and all volunteers who help the process run smoothly and safely. As always to keep up to date with the latest advice please go to the Government’s website: www. gov.uk/guidance/covid-19-coronavirusrestrictions-what-you-can-and-cannot-do Please remember the virus is still with us and please stay vigilant. Passport Delays In April’s article I brought up that anyone hoping to travel abroad once the Covid travel restrictions were eased might find it helpful to check whether their passport needs to be renewed. I just want to re-iterate this advice because there has been a significant increase in applications and this has had a knockon effect so, if your passport needs to be renewed please think well ahead. BEN WALLACE MP (cont) times for applications is currently ten weeks, so please do bear this in mind. Unfortunately, I am aware of a few people who were caught out over half term Remembrance Once again November is upon us and as a nation we pause to remember all those who have given their lives during war and conflict or live with the scars of it. It is a time for reflection and remembrance. For many it is a very personal time, remembering friends and family or paying tribute to those who still live with the physical or mental scars. Having served in the armed forces myself, I feel it is extremely important to remember those who have fought for our freedom and our way of life and always to remember their sacrifices. Keeping in Touch I am pleased to be travelling around our beautiful, but sometimes wet, constituency. I
never tire of visiting local groups, businesses etc. As always, my mailbag has been full of letters covering a host of issues. I say it often but, please do keep the letters and emails coming. Although I do pride myself on travelling around the constituency listening to residents, I can’t speak to everyone and it is vital for me to know the issues that concern people on a daily basis in order for me to carry out my role as your Member of Parliament. Please remember I’m here to help. The most effective way to contact me is by email with a brief description of the issues you wish to raise, along with your contact details (including home address). CAT SMITH MP Lloyds Pharmacy I’ve had a lot of correspondence over the last few months about the difficulties some of you have had getting hold of your prescriptions from the chemist in Knott End. There are occasions when the pharmacy has been closed without warning and I’ve written to Lloyds to raise this with them. I highlighted both the high percentage of retirees in Knott End – many of whom are in receipt of life-saving medication, prescribed to prevent strokes and heart attacks - as well as a high percentage of families with young children who rely on the chemist being open. Many of you say you feel let down by the poor service and that you use the shop for nonprescription, over-the-counter medication and are unable to access pain relief etc when the chemist is closed due to staffing difficulties.
They say the opening times at the Knott End pharmacy have improved since the start of September, after they successfully secured a new full-time pharmacist for the branch. They have also hired an additional three relief pharmacists to cover the Blackpool area. ‘Going forward, there should not be any recurring issues with the services patients in your constituency access on a regular basis.’ Please do get in touch with me if you have any further questions or concerns about the service. Speeding on Beechfield Ave, Preesall I’ve recently been in touch with the police regarding some concerns about speeding on Beechfield Avenue in Preesall. Beechfield Avenue is a 20mph residential road, which was last reviewed by the Lancashire Road Safety Partnership (LRSP) in October 2019 and was given an ‘Overall
Lloyds have been in touch with me to say they are truly sorry to read of the disappointing service you have been experiencing and ‘this is not the level of service we expect for any of our customers, and I can fully appreciate your concerns.’ Lloyds say the Knott End pharmacy went through a difficult period over the summer owing to the loss of a staff member. During the recruitment process to find a replacement, they employed locums to cover the branch. ‘Unfortunately, there were a range of factors influencing the availability of locums at the time, including: the summer holidays, the socalled ‘ping-demic’ and the UK wide shortage of qualified pharmacists. This led to a number of temporary and partial closures which may have disrupted the experience of patients accessing services at the time and for this we are truly sorry.’

CAT SMITH MP (cont) Low’ risk rating. As a result, the LRSP advise the community to consider options in the community toolkit for community approaches to reducing traffic speed. LRSP advise they will not reassess sites within three years unless there’s been major changes to the area. As there has been new housing developments connected to the road recently, and Beechfield Avenue is the primary route into the new estate, residents say the volume of traffic has significantly increased. This could be considered a major change to the use and nature of the road, and I’ve asked for the road to be reassessed. I’ll update you when I hear back. Local Businesses I was pleased to have the opportunity to visit A&G Precision in Preesall a couple of weeks ago. The family-owned company employs over 70 local people with fantastic apprentice opportunities for youngsters leaving St Aidans. A&G manufacture precision engineered components for leading aerospace, defence, Formula 1 and the oil and gas industries and its great to have this state-of-the-art facility (with the most amazing technology and machinery) here in the heart of Over Wyre. I wish them continued success in the years to come, and if you or your youngster is looking for a job in a cutting-edge industry then give them a call! FYI – there are also lots of jobs available at the new fish processing units on the dock at Fleetwood. You can drop in anytime for an informal natter and soon you could be part of Fleetwood’s rich and invaluable fishing heritage, learning alongside some of the town’s most proud and dedicated workers. They’re open from 4:00am. Turning up early proves you’re keen for work - and I’m told you’ll be skilled up and trained pretty much straight away!
I also had the pleasure of visiting another family owned business last week - Farm Yard Ales on Gulf Lane in Cockerham. They make a selection of craft beer working with partners like Blackpool Football Club and amazing artists who design the cans. Farm Yard Ales can be found at Moss Edge Farm which has been in the Holmes Family for five generations. Steve is the sixth but he decided to buck the trend and start his own micro-brewery instead of running a farm. With support from parents, friends, the Rural Development Programme and the NatWest, Farm Yard Ales was created and they built everything up from the ground by themselves including the steel-framed building and the sloping floors, all carefully designed to house a 2,000 litre brew plant. The brewery now has 10 of these 2,000 litre tanks showing the progress made in the last few years. Cat Smith MP t: 01253 490440 e: cat.smith.mp@parliament.uk

GARSTANG & DISTRICT LIONS Donations The members of Garstang & District Lions have agreed to provide a sum of £200 sponsorship in response to a request for support for a runner in the Manchester half marathon with the proceeds going to a charity for the homeless. Our usual generous sum has now been transferred to the Lions Club International Fund to allow them to provide help and support to both current and future world wide emergencies. Fylde Women’s Aid have a continued need for new clothing items (babies, small children or ladies), new toys, new cosmetic or new toiletries and this appeal is ongoing with our collection point being the Resources Centre (old Liberal Club on Bridge Street).
We are also planning to support the road closure and traffic management necessary to facilitate the local Remembrance Day Service arrangements on Sun 14th Nov. As we have done before, we will be parking the cars of entrants and officials at Myerscough College on Sun 5th Dec to allow their annual ten mile run to take place. Very reluctantly we have taken the decision to cancel the annual Christmas community lunch provided for vulnerable adults and their carers because of the continued threat of Covid. However we are still looking to put something else in place and more information will be given later. General Our club continues to grow and another new member was inducted at our last meeting. If you are interested then you would be made most welcome. Further information
We have just completed another delivery but are planning one more soon. The Covid pandemic has created an increase in the overall numbers being supported both nationally and locally and this does include more male recipients too. Events & Activities Members of the Lions managed to park well over 3,000 cars in two very busy days at the recently held Lancashire Game and Country Festival in Scorton. Our next big event is the annual Community Bonfire and Fireworks display on Sat 6th Nov. The bonfire will be lit at 7:00pm and the spectacular firework display will begin at 7:30pm. Admission to the High Street car park will be from 6:30pm onwards. Prices have been held at very low levels at £4 for adults (over 16) and £1 for school-age children up to 16 years and with pre - school being free. Cash payments only.

THE INNER WHEEL CLUB Garstang & Over Wyre Inner Wheel District 19 comprises 21 clubs. It covers the whole of Cumbria and the northern half of Lancashire. Each club is a separate entity working within the ideals of Inner Wheel: To promote true friendship, to encourage the ideals of personal service
and to foster international understanding. Interestingly, nowhere is the word ‘fundraising’ mentioned. In fact nothing could be further from the truth. Every Inner Wheel Club around the globe (we are an international organisation) chooses to fund raise for many good causes and are proud to do so. Whether the cause is a small local charity needing a little support or a global initiative requiring a massive effort, Inner Wheel will always be proactive. Recently, 12 members of our own club here in Garstang attended the District International Rally where we learned more of the work of AQUABOX, a Rotary charity founded by the Rotary Club of Wirksworth in Derbyshire. The district international chairman presented the proceeds from various stalls to a representative from the charity. At the same rally over 100 Rotary shoeboxes were handed to the organisers of this wonderful charity. Rotary members had filled these robust boxes with gifts and donations for distribution to Eastern Europe, hopefully in time for Christmas but not exclusively so. A shoebox is not just for Christmas. A gift is always welcome by those who have so little, whatever the time of year. The club is now looking forward to more fundraising (and fun) for Vision Aid International at the end of November. If there are any ladies who feel they would like more information about the Club or indeed the wider Organisation please be in touch. Mary Mason t: 01995 603 447 e: marytmason@icloud.com

IT’S ALL IN THE MIND Look into my eyes, what do you see? Oh the caricature of a mesmeric hypnotist may well be attractive to writers and film makers but the reality is that a skilled hypnotherapist can be a life changing and positive influence for many. What is hypnotherapy? Well, if you break it down to a literal meaning it translates to sleep therapy, however, you are not asleep but more in a trance or deep concentration/ meditation, and it is nothing like it is portrayed in the media. All hypnotherapy is self-hypnosis. This may sound a little strange, but it is true. Let me explain a little clearer; for those of you that drive, have you ever driven to a destination and suddenly wondered how you got there, because you cannot remember anything of the journey. Have you ever been doing something and suddenly wondered how you did it, again, because you cannot remember

doing it. You have been under self-hypnosis during these events. Your conscious mind has been thinking of other things whilst your subconscious part has been keeping you safe and getting on with things. The power of the mind is so strong and complex, no-one yet fully understands its complexities or range of abilities. It is estimated, and recognised in many circles of medicine, that we only use about 10% of our brains’ (minds’) abilities. This means that 90% of our mind is what we would call the subconscious, and this is the bit that deals with the parts of you that need to work without having to think about it, your breathing, your heart-beat – all your normal bodily functions you take for granted. Hypnotherapy is a marvellous and very powerful form of help that can deal with situations that the conscious mind has difficulty processing. It’s uses are almost Across 1. Conversations (9) 7. In hypnotherapy you are always in control, you are aware of everything going on around you and you will never do anything that you don’t want to, or wouldn’t agree with, in a fully conscious state.
There are no drugs involved in hypnotherapy and there are no time limits to it, a good therapist can help you change your life for the better.
A hypnotherapist is there to guide you through the proceedings with suggestions that are directed at the subconscious. The therapy can be used for many things, and this is a list
The list goes on and on.

the opposition to the Pilling gas terminal plan, the devastating Wyre floods of the 1970s and the blaze which destroyed the Garstang CCM factory as well as the more regular goings on. Along with two other local journos of the time (Pat Seed and Tess Pickford), Angela had a ringside seat at local events. At the book launch Angela will recount some of her memories of the stories she covered and tell of the many personalities she knew from those years. Angela, who lived in Pilling for many years before moving to Preesall, will be accompanied by her husband, Keith (son of a former Pilling village bobby). No need to book. Entry is free and the village hall café will be open for refreshments. Note: current Covid prevention rules will be in force / wearing a face mask is optional. Anthony Coppin
