We currently have some pretty handmade items for sale at the Art Centre Christmas Fair until Thurs 2nd Dec and Christmas cards for Matt’s Fund are still available at Best Wishes in Garstang. A few of the charming Highland Cow calendars in memory of Andrew Key and Matt are also still available at Garstang’s Best Wishes, The Cheese Shop, Dewlay, and also at Longridge from Meraki, The Old Station café, Tap and Vent, Raymond James Investment Services, Jo’s Village Kitchen, Heritage Interiors and Longridge Golf Course. As the year comes to a close, we all would like to thank everyone in our wonderful community and beyond for all your tremendous support over what has been a somewhat challenging 12 months, and we hope the gifts of peace, friendship and love are with you and yours this Christmas time and in the year ahead.

Efforts for Calvert Trust Rewarded

In September, after an 18 month delay, Calvert Lakes was able to accept the first of the 2020 groups. Thirty one people aged 15 to 69 with a wide range of disabilities enjoyed an action-packed week with outdoor challenges including: climbing, canoeing, cycling, high ropes course, horse riding, sailing, walking and zip wiring. On Sat 6th Nov they welcomed the remaining 18 delayed guests. All these guests were funded by Rotary Clubs in Lancashire and Cumbria. This is in addition to the £33,000 emergency funds with a

challenge that was set up by Keswick Rotary Club and supported by Garstang Rotary and Clubs throughout Lancashire and Cumbria.

Wrap-up Central Lancashire

Following the success of our pre-Covid programme to collect surplus winter coats Garstang Rotary Club joined the west Lancashire group in their ‘Wrap-Up’ exercise. Collection boxes were placed at Booths and Sainsbury’s supermarket shops in Garstang between Oct 18th and Nov 8th. This resulted in a total collection of 200 acceptable winter coats which formed part of 750 items collected in West Lancashire. On the tenth of November representatives from Preston South and Garstang Rotary Clubs took 200 winter coats to the Salvation Army sorting centre in Blackpool who were delighted with the donation There is a massive issue in Blackpool with poverty, Asylum seekers and the recent arrival of Afghan refugees. Further distributions will follow to: homeless shelters, women’s refuges and other charities helping people in crisis.

Santa’s Footnote

The Rotary Santa Sleigh will make its usual visit to Over Wyre in December. It will tour the Catterall area on the evening of Mon 13th Dec. On the evening of Tues 14th Dec it will tour the Garstang area. This will be followed by a static display outside Booths from mid-morning on Thurs 16th Dec. Similarly Santa’s Sleigh will be outside Booths on Sat 18th Dec.

The proceeds from the collection will be for Saint John’s Hospice Lancaster, local children’s festivals and charities sponsored by the Rotary Club of Garstang & Over Wyre.
