South Cobb High School Auditorium Addition | Cobb County School District | Role: Designer
Responsibilities: Programming, Design Massing, Schematic Design, Code Research, and Construction Documentation Cobb County School District approached CDH Partners to design an Auditorium for South Cobb High School that would be an asset to their current fine arts program. The new addition was designed to be complementary addition to the existing architecture of the facility and become a landmark for the school to be the focus of the south side of campus. South Cobb stakeholders partnered with CDH to design an addition that would not only meet their capacity and program needs, but also bring their vision of a semicontemporary auditorium to life. The state-of-the-art, 32,000 square feet building consist of a 750-seat auditorium and supporting spaces that include instructional units, a black box theater, and a dance studio. Located next to the existing fine arts building, this addition offers the appropriate space for its fine arts program to thrive. The slanted wood canopy and ceiling at the building entrance creates an alluring threshold into the artistically designed atrium space connecting the exterior with the interior space while the glass facade offers a striking view of the lobby creating a connection to the community through its transparency. The clean angles and geometric gallery-style lobby is used to showcase student art and as a pre-function space during performances. The exterior landscaping planters offer seating and informal gathering space, and the hardscape courtyard between the auditorium and fine arts building provides the orchestra with additional practice space. South Cobb High School now has a 21st Century amenity—an imposing fine arts center that will help its students learn and grow. It creates a distinct entry point while blending in with the existing campus. Through a single addition, CDH was able to transform the entire campus and student experience.

The undulating sound panels were specifically created to enhance the acoustical experience of the auditorium. Each sound panel is angled distinctly to create the wave pattern to match the ceiling. The different colored fabrics amplify the wave pattern and create a theme in the space. MAIN LEVEL 0"

McNair Middle School Future Ready Replacement School | Dekalb County School District | Role: Designer
Responsibilities: Programming, Stake Holder Meetings + Charrette, Overall Design, Code Research, and Construction Documentation, Construction Administration. Ronald E. McNair Middle School was constructed over 50 years ago and was in dire need for a makeover. Originally, the project was to be a renovation and addition to the school but during the preliminary phase, the district decided to replace the exiting facility. The McNair Replacement project will serve as a catalyst for educational facility standardization in the design of the District’s middle school prototype. As the first “Future Ready” school in DeKalb County, Ronald E. McNair Middle School will provide a unique experience for students of this community. The new prototype integrates “21st Century Learning” educational spaces that allow themes of innovation and collaboration to permeate student learning environments. The Media Center serves as the heart and hub of the school and promotes usage of the space as an integral part of student’s daily education. This center is composed of smaller production labs with glass garage-style doors that open to a main circulation area. Through this open design, technology becomes readily accessible and a more fluid style of teamwork is encouraged. The mechanical systems and glazing were coordinated to enhance the main circulation area by sloping the ceiling towards an expansive view of the courtyard. The ceramic-frit screening applied to the south-facing glass adds additional sun control and increases energy efficiency. Other concepts incorporated into the design include increased amounts of glazing for more natural light and better visual control, as well as flexibility in rearrangeable multi-purpose spaces.

Humphries Middle School Future Ready Replacement School | Dekalb County School District | Role: Designer
Responsibilities: Programming, Stake Holder Meetings + Charrette, Overall Design, Code Research, and Construction Documentation, Construction Administration. Humphries Elementary School renovations were required to address various infrastructure issues, as well as provide overall improvements to the function and appearance of the campus. Originally constructed in the 1940’s, the campus received a number of other additions and modifications over the years. Our goal was to create a vibrant, contemporary environment that offers safety and comfort to its students and staff. Based on a condition assessment, our team knew Humphries required significant structural and infrastructure enhancements, including the roofing and some failing wood trusses. Beyond APS’s minimum criteria, our team sought additional opportunities to improve the overall campus flow and circulation. The teams developed strategic solutions to address programs deficiencies and improve opportunities for student learning in the school. The team wanted to highlight the STEM model of teaching and learning that the school utilizes to educate the students. The new entry gives the school a unique characteristics and creates improved student safety through the integration of a security vestibule for increased visual control and the reconfiguration of the administrative suite. One of the most significant features is the renovation of the former auditorium. To take advantage of the dramatic, tall ceilings and abundance of natural light in the space, the design re-purposes the space as the media center. As a focal point to the large space, amphitheater seating and a reading nook create places in the room for students to gather or read quietly.

Kittredge Elementary School Renovation| Dekalb County School District | Role: Project Coordinator
Responsibilities: Programming, Stake Holder Meetings + Charrette, Overall Design, Code Research, and Construction Documentation, Construction Administration. Kittredge Elementary School in Dekalb County was a small scale, low budget renovation project. Just before the lockdown was issued due to the novel Coronavirus, the owner approached CDH to renovate the facility. The construction of the school was originally scheduled to begin in the summer of 2020 to be completed in time for the new school year creating a high intensity construction schedule and tighter budget. The project includes the interior cosmetic renovation of the existing media center administrative suite. The renovation also include the installation of missing casework in all classrooms , reconfiguration of the existing parent center into the school clinic, and the reconfiguration of the existing counselor suite back into a classroom. A new pseudo-corrdior was added adjacent to the existing stage in the cafeteria in order to provide a location for the new Chair lift that was installed for better ADA circulation throughout the facility. My role for this project was that of a Project Manager and responsibilities included initial scope assessment, generate preliminary reports, document existing conditions, create construction documentation and Construction Administration.

Newton County Athletic Facility Master Plan | Role: Design Team
Responsibilities: Programming, Master Plan Design, Proposal Presentation and Graphics Newton County School System issued a Request for Proposal for a Masterplan design for their Athletic Facility Plaza that is utilized by all the high schools in the district. After an initial site visit and a meeting with the stakeholders, the design team recognized several opportunities on the site to enhance the visitor experience whether it is the vehicular or the pedestrian experience. Public Plazas were deliberately included at the connection nodes in the design to appeal to the surrounding community and create an inviting entrance. The team decided to create a concept that supports the Newton County program requirements and addressed the community and stakeholder desires. Some of the priorities indicated by the client include access to the facility and the capacity requirements for parking and seating. Opportunities for the design include additional gathering spaces, branding opportunities for all schools and flow for ticketing and attendees. The following masterplan and phasing diagrams were created for the Interview process by the team but due to the Pandemic, the interview process was paused and the scheme has not been developed further.

Obama Academy
Future Ready Replacement School | Dekalb County School District | Role: Designer
Responsibilities: Programming, Stake Holder Meetings + Charrette, Overall Design, Code Research, and Construction Documentation, Construction Administration. This project was a proposal for the Atlanta Public School RFP for Barack and Michelle Obama Academy. The approach to this project is to prioritize both the conditional and suitability needs that were included in the owners Assessment report. The school sits in the heart of Peoplestown Community brings its benefits, but also offers challenges by being restricted in it’s growth potential. The improved site design will facilitate wayfnding and safety for bus riders, car riders and many walkers within the community. The new security vestibule addition does not create a rigid separation from the community, but rather to allows the schol to become an integral part of the community. The administration area is proposed to be increased to meet APS’s current standards, with emphasis on the clinic, offices, conference room and technology storage rooms. The Parent Center will be relocated to facilitate the Administration area’s workfow. Second to the Media Center, the heart of many community schools is the Parent Center. The Parent Center is proposed to be relocated to be adjacent to the Courtyard. The exterior courtyard is also proposed to be enclosed. This will facilitate a more expansive entry and an increase in common activity space on the Main Level. As the main heart of a school, it is proposed to visually open the Media Center up to the corridor, so that students are encouraged to interact with the Media Center in some fashion daily. The exterior wall will also be opened up to allow for an increase of natural light into the space. The sunken Common Area at the Lower Level is proposed to be improved to allow for more technology, a flexible learning environment and to facilitate Accessible areas.
