rghfi Once upon a Bu In April’s issue, we started our journey down memory lane with pictures of Mortimer. This month, it’s Burghfield’s turn! Thank you to everyone who got in touch with us via our socal media pages and sharing some facsinating images from yesteryear with us. Pictured here are some old photos of the local roads, pubs, homes, post office and the old Tulls store and the Rising Sun (Pre Tesco.) All kindly supplied to us by the wonderful Andrea Hall, Steph Awbery and Sue Wightwick. Burghfield Common’s Butcher, Baker and Grocer were a huge part of local community spirit and life back in the day. Fruit and veg was seasonal and doing your weekly shop meant having a good ole’ chat with the Weller family, who were a big part of Burghfield life and ran the Greengrocer. The best bit about this - is that 50 years on - the Weller family business is still going strong!
Rising Sun, a local pub for people to meet and chat over a pint. Older Burghfieldians may also remember Three Firs Pub, demolished back in the 50’s. Home to the ‘Hunt Club’, it’s annual Boxing Day tradition which saw regulars watch the hounds and horses set off was very popular (no doubt acompanied by a festive tipple or three). Below is a rare photo of a protest March from London to Aldermaston which trailed through the village back in 1963!
