“Speech that is very honest and direct” is a definition of Straight Talk’s wall sign in Steven Knight’s boardroom, representing a personal style of the young and successful Edmontonian. Born to entrepreneurial parents, Knight grew up in a house where the dining room table served as a boardroom, and where both difficult decisions and new ideas were being born as early as he can remember. Growing up in this environment, Knight picked up his parents' passion for business, and evolved it into new ideas but continued to build on their family brand – always having a straight talk with all those who are at the table.

Eccentricity Reigns Supreme Women’s Fall/Winter Fashion Trends with Who Cares? Wear There’s a definite chill in the air, and we Edmontonians know what that means: winter is coming. We teamed up with Who Cares? Wear to showcase the latest cold-weather fashion trends; get ready to embrace an eccentric and unexpected fall/winter 2021. This season isn’t just about breaking the rules. It’s about forgetting they ever existed.

Saturated Shades No more muted tones; this season, it’s all about colour oddity. Whether it’s your cozy knitwear, a structured blazer or a pair of gloves, adding a bold pop of off‑kilter colour to your look is a must. This season draws inspiration from opposition; warm condiment‑inspired hues from the kitchen offset bright colours from the club. Pair neons with mustards and reds. Go daring with dirty, herbal greens and bubblegum pinks. Whatever you choose, your cool‑weather wardrobe is about to explode with unapologetic saturation.

Shovelling Chic The puffy jacket returns for another year and these jackets are fast becoming a winter wardrobe staple. Gone are the days when only a bulky jacket was worn for shovelling snow. These athleisure‑inspired pieces are here to stay with eco-conscious alternatives to boot! Pair your puffer with elevated denim and lugged boots for the ultimate outdoor ensemble.

Vegan Leather One of our favourite transitional trends, faux leather, is a classic we’re thrilled to see this season. The options have expanded beyond the tried and true legging to straight and boot-cut pants, midi skirts and embellished accessories. Pair your faux leather pants with a soft knit; dress up the look for the office with a chic boot. Tone it down for the grocery store with a chunky sneaker; the options are endless.

Elegant Blooms Forget spring; florals are for fall. A botanical print may be an off-beat choice for the first snowfall, but this season is about marching to the beat of your own drum. Pair a rose‑printed silk dress with a chunky, neutral knit and

Something for Everyone Paris Jewellers’ Co-Owner Chau Lui Shares Her Latest Collection Inspired by Inclusivity The Paris Jewellers origin story is the Canadian dream: a couple leaves Vietnam with their two infant daughters to seek a better life in Canada only to find unimaginable success. “My mom would share with me what they were trying to escape back home and what they were trying to build here,” says co-owner Chau Lui. After decades of uncompromising hard work and a commitment to excellence, the company is a national institution.

With

a sparkling new collection full of pieces that transcend trends

and fads, Lui clarifies that inclusivity matters. Lui and her sister have become more open about their history in recent years — something that they initially found terrifying. “We have employees depending on us, and we knew that since we’re not originally from Canada, if we shared our story that people may…” she pauses, “choose not to shop with us.” Lui’s fear speaks volumes because it comes from both personal and professional experiences of racism. Instances of disgruntled customers questioning the “Canadianness” of the business are rare but not unheard of and have become more prevalent during a pandemic marred with anti-Asian racism and rhetoric. Lui chooses to address hate and ignorance with grace, one of the founding principles of Paris Jewellers. Sharing her story matters more than ever for herself, her children and other Asian-Canadians. She describes what it felt like to be in kindergarten, barely speaking English, feeling out of place and unable to communicate what she needed. These feelings are not so uncommon; who among us can’t relate to feeling lonely or confused? The choice to embrace people of diverse backgrounds permeates Paris Jewellers, from their company culture to the collections they create. The response to the company’s origin story has been “overwhelmingly positive,” Lui says, which is something that both she and her sister have found comforting and inspiring, hence this stunning collection that offers a little something for everyone. www.parisjewellers.com

In either form, torque registers at 332 lb-ft and reaches 0-60 km/h in roughly seven seconds. Switch to the Range Rover’s diesel counterpart and the 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6 builds on its 254 hp with 443 lb-ft of torque and a similar 0-60 range to its gas-fuelled cousin. The V8 engine boasts 518 HP and 461 lb-ft of torque and can take you from 0–60 km/h in as little as 5.1 seconds. Available in short and long-wheelbase body styles, the 2019 Range Rover leaves no needs unmet. The short-wheelbase Range Rover comes in base, HSE, Autobiography and SVAutobiography editions; the long-wheelbase SUV only comes in Autobiography and SVAutobiography models. Whether on pavement or rough terrain, all Range Rovers come with full-time 4-wheel drive, rear-locking features, off-road traction modes and a tow rating of 7,716 pounds, proving itself wherever it goes. On the road, the Range Rover offers height-adjustable air suspension, offering up to 12.2 inches of ground clearance. Off-road, the updated water-wading depth sensor allows driving through almost three feet of standing water. Inside, the Range Rover toes the line between style and functionality. Supple leather and wood-veneer trim adorn the interior. A sunroof spans the canopy offering panoramic views of the sky. The infotainment display, dubbed InControl Touch Pro Duo, features twin - 37 -

touch‑screens stacked in the center of the dash. The top screen manages navigation and audio, while the bottom screen handles climate control functions. Apple Car Play and Android Auto are available in all models. The Range Rover’s cargo offers a generous 32 cubic ft of cargo space behind the second row, allowing plenty of space for a family road trip. Upgrade to a higher-end model and the leather extends to the headliner, a massage function becomes available in the seats, along with brushed metal features throughout the console and a bottle cooler. To sum it up, the 2019 Range Rover is a beast in a pretty package and is an absolute treat for both the family and outdoorsy types. It comes with a price tag, and a hefty one at that — starting at six figures and quickly climbing, depending on the bells and whistles...but such is the privilege of owning a Range Rover. www.landroveredmonton.com

Owned

by life-long best friends Christian Mena and Adelino (Lino) Oliveira,

SABOR was a kismet venture that accidentally started a local restaurant empire. Born in Chile and Portugal, Christian and Lino grew up together in northeast Edmonton’s Cromdale neighbourhood — a cultural melting pot. The two eventually found themselves working together before school and on the weekends, for a local rib joint called “Bones”, which was then downtown Edmonton’s go-to rib spot. Fast forward to 2008, Christian and Lino were scouting out buildings for their future restaurant and happened to drive by the old Bones location. To their astonishment, they found a “restaurant opportunity” sign hanging in the window. However, SABOR didn’t just start here. In 1993, inspired by his family’s love for food, Lino moved back to Portugal with his wife Debbie to open up a restaurant, while Christian started a singing career as lead singer of Latin pop-funk band Maracujah. The two kept in touch over the years and still talked of someday owning a restaurant together. Lino dove deep into his family roots, mastering family recipes and learning everything he could about Portuguese cuisine. With honesty being a strong trait of the Portuguese people, his customers became his teachers, and he very quickly learned what people loved to eat - and what they didn’t. In 2007, with the downturn in the European economy, Lino and Debbie returned to Edmonton. With over a decade of experience in Portuguese cuisine under their belts, plans went underway to open a restaurant fueled by Lino and Christian’s combined passions for food and music. It was here that SABOR was born. With the plans being born during a boom, SABOR, originally named Sabor Divino, unexpectedly opened its doors right at the beginning of an unprecedented recession. The first few years were anything but easy, but after a rebrand to “SABOR”, a few menu changes and the opening of the Ice District, the crowds began to flood in. This inspired Christian and Lino

2018 Cordero di Montezemolo Arneis Langhe, Piedmont, Italy Piedmont is often thought of for their muscular, everlasting reds. However, much like Bordeaux, this means their whites are often overlooked. The Arneis grape here in Piedmont is most notable in the Roero DOCG appellation, however is also produced in the generic Langhe appellation. With a reductive verve this presents white nectarine, crushed rocks, and a saline backbone complete with the peppery, almond twinged finish Italy is known for. This is a fine wine to pair with fresh seafood or aromatically‑herbed vegetable appetizers, often a prime serving occasion overlooked at family holiday dinners. Various retailers, $35

2016 Kir-Yianni Xinomavro Ramnista Naoussa, Greece Though a staple in Greece, we have little exposure to the Xinomavro grape in Alberta — what a shame. This wine exhibits a similar haunting aroma and character to Barolo, just in a more approachable form. Wild herbs, earth, cherry, tobacco, and violets all intermingle on the nose, with savoury herbs, orange peel, and black tea supplementing in a savoury fashion on the palate. Perfect if impatience is your vice as it is mine. Aromatic and broad, this blend of 80% Cabernet Franc and 20% Merlot holds on to lingering black plums and cherries just now tapering off to make way for anise, forest floor, leather, and smoke. Glen

Ronald‘s innovative paintings were born out of an early interest

in drawing. As a young boy, sketching for hours in church was the best way to pass the time. In his early adult years, he studied microbiology, and this has had a huge impact on the unique art he creates and his passion for constant experimentation. Many of Glen’s pieces evolve from a paint pour that when dry, shares hidden images and ideas that he uses to create his ‘chaosmosis’. The pour creates a field of chaos and Glen uses his drawing abilities to pull the cosmos (order) out of it. His unique and captivating work has earned him the name ‘The Chaos Whisperer’. “I use interesting textures, colours, patterns and marks.” He also experiments with heat guns, blasts of air and other mediums to invoke interest as well as texture, movement, and interest in his pieces. Glen has a fascination with faces. The faces of Kierkegaard, Dostoevsky, Johnny Cash, and Gord Downie grace the immense canvases in his studio (ranging from 3’x5’ to 6’x6’). There is meaning and interest in all these pieces. “Johnny Cash is a good balance between light and dark; he struggled with addictions but came out with hopefulness.” The massive Kierkegaard piece was all done by hand —- rather than from the catalyst of a paint pour. It is magnificent, sparking the viewer’s imagination with small, embedded images of Kierkegaard in different settings. “If I was allowed to meet one dead person, it would be Kierkegaard...I imagined what he would look like at a party and included that.” Glen's fascination with faces stems from his existential desire to, “understand how the individual fits in with the crowd, when is the crowd or team more powerful and when is the individual more powerful. I’ll do all the faces tangled together to show how interrelated everyone is. Everyone is connected.”

If you want to check out Glen on Instagram or in person at his studio, give yourself the luxury of time. His muse, intellect, curiosity and genuine wonder about the world and humanity can take you down a deep conversational journey. For those who relish in deep conversation, existential meaning and creativity, two hours with Glen seems like a minute. Glen’s art is unique and distinctive — a metaphor for life. “I am okay with something being a little off. Things are not perfect in life.” He speaks to “being in the flow” when creating art, and this flow seems to embody all he does. Glen brings his best to each work of art whether commissioned by a client or something he chooses to create. Check his work out for yourself. Let It Snow! “

With luck, it might even snow for us. - HARUKI MURAKAMI

” When the Sawmill restaurant on Gateway Blvd had run its course back in 2014, it took a passion for powder and a keen eye for business to envision another life for this chalet‑esque structure. New owners of Sundance Ski and Snowboard, Alexandra Messinis and Jim Hillman were determined to carve out their own tracks when it came to the future of Sundance Ski and Snowboard, a favourite of snow sport enthusiasts since 1975. As Messinis explains, “It was an exciting time and opportunity to be a part of the progression of the business. We had big aspirations and moved online immediately. We were fully integrated, a first in the industry.” But as much as there was a need for advancement into the world of e-commerce, these two partners knew the value of decades’ long experience in the snow business. Previous owner, Vern Mark agreed to stay on as part of the team - an irreplaceable face and fitter at the store. “He knows everyone! People travel here from everywhere to get their boots fit by Vern!”

Offering

high-end apparel to ski and snowboard sales, Sundance

Ski and Snowboard offers exceptional and knowledgeable expertise when it comes to the right gear for those perfect snowy days. But you’d better rip on in there as their season is already well underway. “Since Covid, October has become our busiest month! It’s changed our industry for the better. It’s made everyone appreciate everything Alberta has to offer, including getting people outside. It's cool to see people staying closer to home and enjoying what we have to offer - from our Edmonton River Valley to our incredible mountains!" Guess what else has snowballed at Sundance? The addition of a travel component. From helicopter skiing to cat-skiing trips into remote locations, they’ve travelled as far away as Japan. Swelling in popularity, backcountry skiing caters to beginners and experts. So if you’ve never been on powder, Messinis has some sage advice. “It’s now safer and easier to get started at any age. Our local ski areas are conducive to learning. They’ve done a really great job. From magic carpets to tubing, just get outside. But try your hand at the mountains, don’t be discouraged. Marmot Basin has a green run that’s three kilometres long. It’s an opportunity to learn. Progression happens quickly when you’re in the mountains.” And what about this underground, intense ski community that seems to be thriving in our province? “It’s all about meeting great people who are passionate about snow powder. It’s amazing how happy we are to go freeze ourselves in -30 degree weather. We look at it as the entire experience. Getting to your destination, chair lifts, and of course we can all get behind Apres-ski! Everyone just inevitably forgets about the pain and looks forward to charcuterie boards and hot toddies! We’re just very fortunate to have world class skiing in Alberta.” www.sundanceskishop.com

Close to the Stars From gorgeous mornings to dreamy nights – The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge's Signature Cabins spark joy for the holiday season - 65 -

November 2021

From

breathtaking views to the magnificent Rockies, viewing

wildlife, or a spectacular sunrise, Jasper is one of the most beautiful places to visit. The scenery can be described with many words, but the feeling of seeing those turquoise lakes tucked in comfortably between the mountains, snow gently covering the areas around it, while the clouds are forming abstract paintings in the clear sky…that feeling is hard to describe. And if you’ve already experienced #ThatFairmontFeeling at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge, you’ve made the acquaintance with this place, conveniently situated in our own province. In case you haven’t, the holiday season is a perfect time for a visit and an introduction. “Just imagine, surrounded by mountain peaks, millions of snow-covered trees, and endless sparkles of stars under our Dark Sky Preserve,” Laura-Anne Chong, the Public Relations Manager at JPL, starts to describe why it’s so appealing to visit Jasper during the holidays. Skating on the frozen surface of Lake Mildred or playing a scrappy game of pond hockey are often highlights, as well as hitting the slopes on Marmot Basin. The humbling feeling of being surrounded by naturally roaming wildlife of the Jasper National Park is a majestic experience and always leaves a lasting impression on anyone who comes to visit. One of the most special ways to enjoy Jasper is staying in one of JPL’s Signature Cabins. Each of the nine cabins has its own appeal, whether you want to step back in time, stay in the same place as the Royal Family, or access a private golfing green. Wood burning fireplaces, outdoor patios with fire pits, dedicated butler service, chef’s table dinners where the chef prepares a special meal for your group are only some of the highlights. Spa services paired with outdoor heated pools and hot tubs

while you’re taking in the spectacular views of the surrounding mountain peaks or the Jasper Dark Sky Preserve are other perks that come with this luxurious getaway. You’ll also find exceptional dining options, from prix fixe menus to more casual affairs, as well as a sushi restaurant; there are plenty of delicious gastronomic experiences. “Live music in the evenings or the Jasper Planetarium are also available for guests and visitors to enjoy," says Chong. "With JPL being located under a Dark Sky Preserve, Jasper is one of the best places on Earth to look up into the skies and see the millions of stars twinkle above us." www.jasperparklodge.com - 66 -

Lessons in Doing Your Kitchen Right Eurolux Kitchens brings European style & ingenuity to the kitchens of Edmonton www.modernluxuria.com

When

you think of European design, one can’t help but think of how much

more ingenious and thoughtful everything seems to be. It’s these two words that describe Eurolux Kitchens’ approach to design and excellent client experience. The family-operated business has been impressing Canadian homeowners since 2007. Eurolux Kitchens first entered the scene under the name Euro Centre as a renovation and cabinetry business. Vitaly, one of the owners, started his career long before then, however. “My background has always been with furniture, as I learned the trade from my father, who was a cabinet maker. Following that, I had my own furniture manufactory back in the Soviet Union. When we moved to Germany, I transitioned to cabinetry and kitchen design and have had a successful career in that niche.” While they still do some renovations, the company’s specialty lies in kitchen design, cabinetry, and glass backsplashes, often attracting customers who upon returning from trips to Europe, want to replicate some qualities in their own homes that they saw abroad. The first step toward any customer’s dream kitchen is a visit to the showroom to get acquainted with all the colours and materials they have to offer. White and grey have been the reigning favourites, typically paired with a wood accent but they can appeal to nearly every colour palette. “We do have essentially any material/style/colour under the sun here at Eurolux Kitchens. Our kitchen designs also tend to feature cooktops and wall ovens rather than ranges because of our modern approach, but we can accommodate any design request.”

November November 2021 2021

The past year and a half has forced businesses to adapt, and for Vitaly and his family, there was no exception. In a business where clients need to see materials and collaborate on their designs with the team, how could they continue to serve people as effectively as before? Eurolux Kitchens already boasted an excellent program to create 3D renderings to show clients what their future kitchens would look like at the end of the process, but they followed this up with special software to bring the collaborative process to the digital realm. “To serve clients better, we have launched a cloud-based design portal where we can collaborate on designs and share all relevant documents, renderings, etc., with clients who would rather not visit the showroom.” www.euroluxkitchens.ca

Biggest Design Mistakes As Seen By Vitaly — · Attempts at a modern kitchen design approached with a traditional mindset · Old appliances in a new kitchen · Compromising quality and function for looks · Buying new appliances before starting your kitchen design · Buying based on trends instead of going with your true preference
