EDITOR'S LETTER 12
P
assword: climate change. I want to focus your attention on the one of the most pressing challenges of our time. Global warming, caused mainly by greenhouse gas emissions from human activity, is having devastating impacts on ecosystems, economies and communities worldwide. Extreme weather events, such as hurricanes, fires and floods, have become more frequent and intense, putting the lives and livelihoods of millions of people at risk. In addition, rising sea levels threaten to submerge entire coastal cities. It is critical that governments, businesses and citizens work together to reduce carbon emissions, promote the use of renewable energy and adopt sustainable lifestyles. Only through collective efforts can we hope to mitigate the worst effects of climate change and protect our planet for future generations. Fashion, like other social phenomena with great resonance, cannot stand aside in sharing the problems of our time. Everyone who has a ‘voice’ must necessarily do something more. Not to mention the fact that a large share of responsibility comes from it and from fast fashion. Editor-in-chief Facebook: @marta.forgione Instagram: @martaforgione

Earth
Down
With this cover story we start here to talk about climate change and put a face to the problem. The two models represent global warming and human beings. The square mirror cube represents the EARTH. By observing, listening and acting around the Earth, we can perceive that our planet is challenged by the circumstances around it. Human beings tend to downplay the problem, for a number of complex reasons. Firstly, the often slow and gradual nature of disaster can make it difficult to perceive the consequences immediately, leading to a sense of denial or indifference. Economic and political issues then strongly influence public perceptions and priorities, with some sectors likely to feel threatened by the measures needed to address the problem. Misinformation and the spread of myths about climate change also contribute to confusion and doubt among people. Also, the phenomenon of cognitive dissonance can lead individuals to ignore or downplay information that conflicts with their lifestyle or personal beliefs. Combating this tendency requires a HUGE joint effort to increase awareness, education and effective communication on climate change risks and solutions.

must have
While the fashion world is increasingly focused on comfort and the expression of our individuality, the combination of new textures and fabrics allows for experimentation with bold colour pairings and the introduction of intense, enveloping tones. Minimalism is still in, but so are extreme layering and exaggerated volumes. This season welcomes experimentation, the search for sustainable and circular materials to pair with the staples of the traditional wardrobe. From London Fashion Week, we get the codes to unlock the style of the 2024-2025 winter season: a practical, functional approach that is at the same time elegant and contemporary. Tailoring is being reinvented, integrating bolder designs, broader silhouettes, and structured and deconstructed cuts. Next winter will be a season of contrasts, and the runway collections encourage us to dare: from fabrics with dramatic drapes to exaggerated volumes for a theatrical effect, paired with lingerie-inspired garments in fluid, seductive fabrics. The fusion of contrasting materials, such as wool and satin, gives the winter wardrobe a sensory feeling, inviting us to explore fashion not only with our eyes but also through touch. As for the colour palette, a newcomer for next year is Future Dusk, an intriguing shade between blue and purple, which, according to colour psychology, can evoke a sense of reassurance and escape. This captivating dark hue draws inspiration from twilight skies, space landscapes, moonlit luminescence, and futuristic high-tech environments. It ranks second only to midnight blue, perfect for glossy, textural fabrics.

Boho Chic: Freedom in Motion 4. 1. Who said boho chic is only for summer? Chiffon, ruffles, lace, and graceful layering are in. This season, the runways showcased a refined approach to memorable trends and fabrics from the iconic ‘70s. Luisa Beccaria’s Fall 2024 collection presents her personal romantic take on the “flower children” vision with flowing dresses, micro floral prints, and head-to-toe velvet. Accessories are key to completing the hippieboho look: oversized sunglasses, long necklaces, gold chain belts, soft bags, knee-high boots, and plenty of suede. The perfect match? A floral maxi dress by Giambattista Valli in pleated silk, paired with bold and contrasting accessories in black and brown tones: the Blake hobo bag by The Row, Jacquemus oversized rectangular pair of sunglasses from the show at Casa Malaparte, Capri, Jimmy Choo’s Brooklyn boots with buckle and rear zipper, and Janessa Leone wool fedora with suede band.

Animalier: The city is our urban jungle 1.
4. A must-have for the Fall-Winter 2024 season is animal print. Whether leopard, zebra, tiger, or giraffe, the return to the city life is marked by the revival of this print in many variations, starting with pieces like the Faille midi skirt in jaguar print, inspired by the architectural complexities of Art Nouveau, or the seductive bodycon mesh dress by Alex Perry. Not just black: animal print can be recreated on a variety of backgrounds. For instance, Zimmermann’s cream-colored chiffon blouse follows the sinuous lines of 1920s creations with a delicate chocolate leopard pattern. Pairing animal print is not impossible: just let it dominate the look and avoid too much contrast. Our suggestions for completing a standout outfit include The Row’s Pierrick cotton jacket in biscuit colour, Jacquemus rectangular sunglasses in pastel yellow, and the Nikka jeans by CLOSED in sustainable cotton.

Dolls: a nostalgic reflection on the past 4.
1.
The doll imagery that has powerfully influenced artistic trends over the past two years has also inspired designers on the runway. The “dark doll” trend is a gothic, romantic reinterpretation of doll-inspired fashion, mixing nostalgic elements with a darker, more sophisticated aesthetic. It blends innocence and childlike silhouettes with retro gothic vibes. Think of the ultra-feminine black velvet mini dress by Giambattista Valli paired with ALAÏA leather stiletto boots featuring a small bow on the upper sole. These combine perfectly with more glamorous accessories, like Louboutin’s Giddy bag, which plays with contrasting metallic designs inspired by the Western world in pink and blue hues, and Jennifer Behr’s satin bow hair clip, a luxurious accessory adorned with an ornate embellishment that adds a bon-ton touch to any outfit.

Long Live... Punk! 1. For those who can’t give up tartan this winter, the runways presented this plaid pattern in numerous colours, tailored suits, and sizes ranging from micro to maxi. Our take on punk fashion includes a plaid hourglass dress by Lena Hoschek in the “Vivienne” model, featuring an opulent print with detachable and convertible long sleeves. To tone down such a regal dress, we suggest an oversized denim bomber with vintage wash and large pockets from Zimmermann. Accessories stay true to the rebellious spirit. Balenciaga provides two perfect examples: the Bullzoder platform wedge boots with studs and the Le Cagole XS bag in acid green.

Volume Up! 1. Sooner or later, volumes will always make a comeback. The balloon shape, whether on skirts or blouse sleeves, remains one of the most dramatic and popular trends in fashion, and it seems destined to return to our wardrobes cyclically. Known for adding exaggerated, voluminous structures that bring drama and movement to garments, the balloon trend—also known as the bubble silhouette—will appear in tops, such as Rabanne’s ethnic print sweater, but especially in outerwear. A.W.A.K.E. MODE’s coat is the perfect contemporary take, with its oversized volumes and structured material that lends layers and a gorgeous drape. Accessories should be kept in balance with balloon pieces, opting for more form-fitting items to avoid volume overload. To accompany a balloon blouse, we suggest the Oscar de la Renta leather pencil skirt in shaded cocoa and ginger tones, paired with The Row’s minimalist clutch.

Poncho: a mix of comfort and versatility 1. The origin of the poncho dates back to Greco-Roman times, gaining prominence in South America from the 17th century before spreading worldwide. The poncho—also known as the cape—is the quintessential cozy garment that, alongside jackets and coats, is becoming a staple for the early cold. It can be paired with any look, whether casual for work or elegant for the evening. Toteme’s black leather cape, inspired by military style, is a contemporary and original interpretation of the “uniform” model, playing with the traditional poncho’s volumes and adapting them to the urban context.

Back to College with Preppy Style 2.
1.
Preppy style emerged in the late 1950s and early 1960s from the school uniforms of Ivy League students, America’s most prestigious universities. However, it was TV series like Happy Days, Beverly Hills 90210, Dawson’s Creek, and more recently Gossip Girl that made preppy fashion popular, transforming it from an elite look to a widespread trend. Thom Browne draws from his expertise in menswear to create a preppy cardigan in navy and white hues, perfectly embodying this concept. The accessories to complete the look? A pleated miniskirt, either solid or plaid, Jennifer Behr’s silk padded headband, and SPALWART leather and suede sneakers, worn with mid-length white socks, of course.

Being a Lady: The Timeless Bourgeois Style 4.
1.
After a period of embracing quiet luxury, Fall 2024 will be dominated by lady-like, bourgeois style with Parisian inspiration. This style is all about quality cuts, fabrics, and the timeless emulation of iconic figures of elegance. Key colours such as dark blue, black, and white form the foundation of bourgeois chic, with long skirts, shirts, suits, and button-up cardigans narrating the story of a style that could never fade. To create this look, nothing beats a coordinated set, like the wool top and tulle maxi skirt by Elie Saab—a romantic and opulent interpretation of bourgeois fashion. For matching accessories, we suggest Paula Rowan’s leather gloves and Balenciaga’s Louis XV pumps for a dramatic and modern touch.

Fur, Yes. But Make It Eco-Friendly 1. The undisputed queen of the winter season, fur, will make a bold return for Fall-Winter 2024 in vibrant tones and pastel colours. Runway collections by Alabama Muse and Genny showcased eco-friendly fur as a must-have outerwear piece this season. Whether in Mongolian textures, teddy bear styles, or plush fabrics, fur offers endless interpretations and playful textures and colour combinations, like Coperni’s gradient coat in biscuit and aubergine tones. To complete the look, we recommend Rabanne’s leather medallion bag in butter yellow, a Jennifer Behr headband, and Isabel Marant’s suede boots.

Dresses and Sheer Fabrics 1. Bold yet romantic, innocent yet revealing. Slip dresses remain in vogue for the colder season, paired with statement accessories and oversized outerwear to elevate the look into pure luxury. Simone Rocha’s runway show offers plenty of inspiration, and our outfit proposal features sheer fabrics alongside equally feminine and sophisticated elements. The star piece is a black silk and organza dress with floral appliqués by Ludovic de Saint Sernin, accessorized with Hvoya mesh ballerinas, a cotton trench with oblique cuts by Courrèges, and Johanna Ortiz tulip motif earrings.

Denim Couture 1. Denim is an evergreen in the fashion world, constantly reinvented and refreshed with playful designs, colours, and deconstructions that make it a versatile and timeless fabric. Denim couture presents the material in a structured yet soft form, with a bold aesthetic focused on personality and functionality. Zimmermann’s oversized top with a bow detail is a striking example of this trend: flowing sleeves, a knotted collar, and exaggerated volumes in a fluid yet unconventional structure. Similarly, Stella McCartney’s wide-leg jeans, made from a non-stretch cotton blend with a bouclé finish, give a subtly speckled look. The accessories to match this look are minimal and elegant, enhancing the denim as the standout piece: ankle-hugging boots by Toteme with a kitten heel and a suede bag from The Row.

How to overcome a creative block? When one feels as if locked in a box, it is important to find ways to stimulate creativity and rekindle inspiration. A first step can be to take a break and temporarily detach yourself from the project you are working on, allowing your mind to relax and recharge. Exploring new art forms or techniques, attending a course or visiting exhibitions can offer new perspectives and ideas. Comparing with other artists and sharing one's difficulties can also be very useful, as interaction with creative minds can stimulate new insights. Finally, it is crucial to remember that moments of blockages are a natural part of the creative process and that, with patience and open-mindedness, they can be overcome and turned into opportunities for artistic growth.

In recent years, fashion has begun to explore and celebrate a beauty that goes beyond traditional youthful standards, embracing what is known as the ‘grey zone’ of models over 50. This change represents a fantastic revolution in the industry that recognises and values mature beauty, proving that style and elegance have no age. Famous brands and fashion houses are finally including older models in their campaigns, challenging stereotypes and promoting a more inclusive and authentic vision of beauty. This trend not only celebrates experience and wisdom, but also offers a more realistic and diverse representation of women in the fashion world, inspiring generations of all ages to feel confident and appreciated for who they are.

ABOVE THE LINE Being above the lines and embracing one's uniqueness is a journey of self-exploration and selfacceptance. It means recognising and celebrating one's particularities and quirks, turning them into strengths rather than flaws. Loving oneself is the first step towards authentic self-esteem, which stems from the recognition of one's individuality and the ability to accept oneself for who one is, without conforming to the expectations of others. Feeling special does not necessarily mean being different from others, but rather appreciating and cultivating the characteristics that make us unique. This positive attitude not only enriches our lives, but also inspires others to do the same.

Beauty products for this fall/winter? The answer is
Skin Longevity

September is a month for reflections, new resolutions, and fresh starts. With the summer season behind us, it’s time to take care of ourselves and perhaps revisit some of those New Year’s resolutions that were left unfinished. Whether it’s the beginning of a new work or school year, the most important thing is to start anew, and to do so, one must know how to recharge in the right way. Be yourself, at your best. When it comes to well-being and adapting a beauty routine to our needs, body and skin care must work synergically from both the inside and the outside. The skin is like a temple for our soul, and as such, it must be protected, respected, and preserved. A term that has gained traction in the beauty world and has sparked a movement for the conservation and preservation of our body is Skin Longevity. This philosophy is based on maintaining a healthy and balanced lifestyle in combination with the right treatments to slow down skin aging. Specifically, it aims to prevent oxidation, inflammation, and glycation processes that are responsible for the spread of free radicals. Therefore, in addition to a healthy diet, exercise, and targeted supplements that cater to our body’s needs, September it’s the right time for treatments to restore the brightness and hydration lost due to sun exposure. In particular, treatments aimed at restoring the hydrolipidic barrier and deep exfoliation, which not only accelerate cell renewal but also give more radiance and evenness to the remaining tan. Deep cleansing treatments, masks, and body butters rich in deeply penetrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, retinoids, and vitamins A, C, and E are also highly recommended. Last thing to be remembered is that the end of summer doesn’t translate to abandoning sunscreen – the last step of any beauty routine – to avoid negating the anti-aging effects of the previous treatments.

Do Son - Shower Oil with Sensory Scents Entering the colder season can be quite a shock for our skin, which during the summer has had to endure the effects of the scorching sun, wind, and saltwater. To repair the hydrolipidic barrier of the body’s skin, one must start in the shower (or bath) with a cleansing product that provides an emollient and sensory effect. The unisex scented oil by Do Son transforms into a satin-like emulsion when in contact with water, deeply nourishing the skin thanks to a high concentration of apricot kernel oil, while offering a sensory wellness experience with floral notes of tuberose, orange blossom, and jasmine.

Indisputably the most romantic element of any makeup look, blush has evolved over time from a simple cheek powder to a multi-purpose product that brings colour to the highest points of the face (those that would naturally be kissed by the sun), with adaptable textures that also make it versatile as a lip and eye product. The Moist Ampoule Blusher from the South Korean brand House of Hur is the perfect combination between makeup and skincare, with an imperceptible texture enriched with a water-based essence. The light but buildable pigmentation provides a “bonne mine” effect that warms the complexion without depriving it of hydration, ensuring a healthy and long-lasting luminous look.

Calligraphie de Chanel – Hyperblack Those who grew up following the beauty trends of the 1990s will vividly remember certain bold styles (such as dark, smudgy eyeshadow) that we never thought would make a comeback. Yet, the upcoming fall/winter season brings back a rebellious, bold, almost messy, and deliberately imperfect style, an evolution of the “I woke up like this” trend that embraces the grunge aesthetic for a woman who can afford to do it all, like Courtney Love, who made smudgy eyeshadow and eyeliner her signature look. Contemporary versions of the grunge trend could be described as more romantic and controlled, but still featuring imperfect eyeliners in black or red tones and a daring use of reverse eyeliner (or upside-down eye makeup). Our ally for the winter season is an eye product that can be applied with precision, has an intense color, and is also easy to blend, like the Calligraphie de Chanel in Hyperblack.

Behind her eyes
Behind the eyes of planet earth we could see the disaster we are creating, in all its power. Climate change and fast fashion are two closely related issues, whose negative impacts on the environment are now well documented. Fast fashion, with its high-speed, low-cost production model, contributes significantly to pollution and waste of natural resources. Clothing factories emit large amounts of greenhouse gases, use huge amounts of water and often pollute rivers and oceans with toxic chemicals. Furthermore, the short lifespan of garments produced in this sector leads to an increase in textile waste, which ends up in landfills, further contributing to global warming. It is essential to adopt more sustainable consumption practices and to promote quality, durability of garments and respect for the environment.

“Harmony and Dissonance: Orphism in Paris, 1910–1930” (New York) 11/08/2024 – 03/09/2025 Opening on November 8th in the iconic rotunda of the Guggenheim Museum in New York, this exhibition features over 90 works of art and explores the vibrant abstract art of Orphism, examining the influence that dance, music, and poetry had on this art form. Orphism emerged in Paris in 1910, a time when innovations in modern life were radically transforming the concepts of time and space. Artists associated with this movement explored ideas of simultaneity through kaleidoscopic compositions, delving into the countless transformative possibilities of colour, form, and movement. The exhibition will feature selected works by artists such as Robert Delaunay, Marcel Duchamp, Mainie Jellett, and the Synchromists Stanton Macdonald-Wright and Morgan Russell. “Expanded Horizons: American Art in the 1970s” (Paris) 09/21/2024 – 01/25/2025 Known as one of the most turbulent decades in American history, the 1970s provided the perfect socio-political conditions for the development of radical artistic movements. This major exhibition at Thaddaeus Ropac Paris Pantin brings together works created using different media, challenging the boundaries and expanding the horizons of artistic creation in terms of scale, material, and subject. The exhibition invites a re-examination of a frequently overlooked decade, reflecting on how pioneering artists of that period questioned and redefined contemporary conceptions of art. From Robert Rauschenberg to Mary Lovelace O’Neal, from James Rosenquist to Donald Judd and Andy Warhol, the unconventional practices of these and 15 other artists on display seek to capture the dialogue between history and society that forever changed the art. “Mike Kelley: Ghost and Spirit” at Tate Modern (London) 10/02/2024 – 03/09/2025 “Mike Kelley: Ghost and Spirit” will be the first major exhibition in the United Kingdom of American artist Mike Kelley. From the late 1970s until 2012, Kelley created a wide range of works spanning drawing, collage, performance, found objects, and video. This exhibition, organized more than a decade after his death, retraces Kelley’s entire career: from his innovative handmade sculptures created with fabric and plush toys to his multimedia installations like Day Is Done. Drawing inspiration from popular and underground culture, as well as literature and philosophy, Kelley explores how the roles we play in society are intertwined with historical events and imaginary characters from the films and images we consume, prompting viewers to reflect on the concepts of identity and memory. “Picasso the Foreigner” at Palazzo Reale (Milan) 09/20/2024 -02/02/2025 A previously unseen Picasso, portrayed through political, artistic, and contemporary themes, will be on display at Palazzo Reale starting in September. The exhibition presents over 90 works by the Spanish artist, alongside documents, photographs, letters, and videos. Through a multidisciplinary approach and meticulous research in the archives of the French police and the Picasso Museum in Paris, Annie Cohen-Solal unveils a fascinating story of the artist based on numerous unpublished documents. From the challenges of his first arrival in Paris in 1900 to his years as a leader of the Cubist avant-garde, up to 1940 when his application for naturalization was denied, the exhibition traces the major events of his tumultuous life, where both internal and external conflicts led to artworks that emerged as true aesthetic revolutions..

Nature is crying out to us for help. Deforestation is a critical environmental problem that threatens the biodiversity and climate stability of our planet. Every year, vast areas of forest are cleared to make way for agriculture, urbanisation and the timber industry, causing the loss of habitat for numerous animal and plant species. This phenomenon also contributes to the increase in carbon dioxide emissions, as trees, which absorb CO2, are removed without being replaced. Reforestation, therefore, becomes essential not only to restore natural ecosystems, but also to combat climate change. Planting new trees helps sequester carbon, improve air and water quality, and provide shelter for wildlife.

accessories words Martina Tondo
While the green “Brat” and pink “Demure” are set to fade like most trends do, awaiting the social network’s judgment, the fashion collections for Fall-Winter 20242025 have dictated classic yet striking inspirations and pairings, suggesting a return to bourgeois style with rich, dark tones. There is no more room for minimalism. The trends embrace the sophisticated elegance of the cosmopolitan woman, immersed in the myriad of stimuli offered by the fast-paced rhythms of metropolitan life. Neoclassical details, tailored fabrics, and precious, enveloping knitwear are the keys to unlocking the style of great icons of entertainment and fashion history who best embodied this trend—or rather, lifestyle. From Coco Chanel to Catherine Deneuve, from Jane Birkin to Grace Kelly, the bourgeois woman uses her clothes as a tool to convey status, representing her belonging to a well-defined social class. A solidified style whose outfits are carefully planned in advance to create coordinated looks from head to toe. An essential monochromatic palette and precious yet functional accessories enrich the outfits of a woman who dresses to leave a mark. Decorations, embroidery, and prints are kept to a minimum in these looks, where the undisputed stars are the quality of the cuts, the refinement of the fabrics, and first-rate threads. The colours are the timeless classics for the cold season: blue, khaki, gray, white, and black. The return of bourgeois style is certainly no news, as history is filled with icons who made us dream with their educated, sober, and determined style. In a world where trends constantly chase one another, bourgeois style remains an evergreen that fashion professionals love to draw inspiration from. A well-established symbol of nostalgia from the past? Perhaps. We prefer to identify it as the ground zero of women’s fashion, a reference point to which one can always pleasantly return.

Stand-out Belts The belt: functional accessory or beauty statement? Why not both! Often underestimated, the belt holds the great power to elevate or completely transform a look—even for the worse—so careful attention must be paid when adding it to your outfit. This season, designers abound with wide belts, in slight colour contrast to emphasize the waist or as the star of a tone-on-tone look, as seen with Andres Otalora’s leather belt in a tan color, adorned with a soft nappa leather bow. In the 2024-2025 prêt-à-porter collections, belts will be an essential accessory not only for winter but throughout the year. From leather sashes to jewelry-style belts, from cowboy belts to studded rock-inspired ones, belts will cinch skirts and pants at the waist to emphasize the coveted hourglass silhouette. The keyword: dare with mix-and-match fabrics and belt materials to give the entire outfit more character and personality. p.171

LATEST aCCESSORIES High Boots, Even Higher Basic, cowboy, or biker, the boots must be high. Boots are a must that define the entire fall season, particularly those featuring wide and enveloping shafts that can be worn with pants tucked inside (a nod to the ‘70s) or left loose for a flared effect. This year, heel height lowers—no more than 8 centimeters—in favour of a more generous shaft length. Whether it’s snug, rigid, semi-rigid, or military-style, it doesn’t matter; the collections we’ve seen on the runway offer something for every taste: suede, pony hair, studded boots, and Chelsea boots, all strictly in the rich, warm colour palette of fall—marron glacé, caramel, burgundy, chocolate, and black. Among our picks are the over-the-knee boots by Chloé in burgundy leather, perfect for pairing with a casual daytime look or a romantic evening dress, and Christian Louboutin’s camperos boots in the Santia Botta model, made of suede with carved details evoking the cowboys of the old, wild West.

LATEST aCCESSORIES Jewelry: I want everything or nothing The English would say: go big or go home. From the style directions set by the runways, it seems that jewelry is also experiencing a return to the past. The most romantic and nostalgic might even raid their mothers’ and grandmothers’ jewellery boxes to find models still relevant in the coming trends. From button earrings to necklaces with large pendants and sculptural designs, this winter’s jewellery is used to lighten up the classic, austere office look, making it more contemporary and less stuffy. Juju Vera offers a version of the Thea choker in silver, evoking the powerful image of women in command, such as Athena or Cleopatra. Among the best pairings with this type of necklace are Juju Vera’s button earrings, featuring a capital design that recalls the ancient style of Greek and Roman columns. Even hair deserves its part in completing the look. On this note, we highlight Lelet’s accessories to elevate a classic half-updo, a braid, or a simple ponytail with true jewellery pieces in rich geometric shapes, available in rhodium or 24k gold, to add a touch of brilliance to the hair, moving beyond the comfortable yet dull hair clip.

LATEST aCCESSORIES The Handbag: Our Dearest Ally An inseparable companion of the bourgeois woman is the oversized handbag: geometric or soft, bucket-shaped, or a comfortable pouch. Balenciaga and Chloé have presented it in a revamped 24-hour version with metallic inserts and an XXL-sized soft saddlebag to carry everything we need and more. The contemporary woman never stops and doesn’t have time for a wardrobe change. Bottega Veneta knows this well and offers a model like the Large Hop to accompany us from morning to evening: in a clean-cut, essential black version perfect for the city, or woven in off-white to add a sophisticated touch to any look—a mix of artisanal tailoring and refinement. Jacquemus dives into this trend with the Bambola bucket bag, interpreted in various cuts and patterns for the La Casa collection. For those who can’t give up mini bags, there’s the asymmetrical black Bambola in Petit version by Jacquemus, The Row’s mini Devon, and Proenza Schouler’s cylindrical Silo bag, another trending model whose design resembles a beauty case or a toiletry kit for essentials.

StolenNights The phenomenon we call ‘stolen nights’ refers to those adolescent experiences that many people have not been able to fully experience due to various factors, such as early family responsibilities, school pressure, or adverse socio-economic conditions. During adolescence, a period traditionally associated with personal discovery, social exploration, and carefree fun, some young people find themselves having to give up these experiences in order to face more adult challenges. This can lead to feelings of regret or loss in adulthood, affecting the perception of one's youth. It is important to recognise and address these situations so that all young people have the opportunity to experience a balanced and fulfilling youth, with the right support from family and community.

Dwelling by the West Lake is a Chinese film directed by Gu Xiaogang and executive produced by Jianhao Andy An, serving as a follow-up to Gu’s multi-prize-winning debut Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains. She was driven away from the tea garden by her lover's mother. Then she was deceived by her closest sister, Jin Lan, into the pyramid scheme "Butterfly International". Tai Hua became addicted to it. Mu Lian was physically and mentally exhausted trying to find his lost father and save his addicted mother. "Butterfly International" grew like a vine, planting the seeds of the devil in the hearts of countless people. Executive Producer Jianhao Andy An's Journey
Xiaogang needed a producer at the time, so the bond became natural.
Jianhao Andy An is a distinguished film producer in China. His career boasts notable achievements. Besides Dwelling by the West Lake, he co-produced Love Is A Gun, which was officially selected for the 2023 Venice Film Festival and won the Lion of the Future Award. In the realm of short films, Andy co-produced When Winter Comes, which was selected for the Palm Springs ShortFest 2024, and produced Winter by River, which was featured at the Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia 2022. Furthermore, he worked as a writer, director, and producer for It’s Better to Save Trouble, which garnered recognition at various film festivals, including the New York City Independent Film Festival, New York International Film Awards, DC Asian Pacific American Film Festival, and Flickfair Film Festival 2022.
What aspects of the film's production and storytelling drew you to be a part of it?
We caught up with Jianhao to get his insights on Dwelling By The West Lake.
Can you tell us about your involvement in the project "Dwelling by the West Lake" and how you became a part of it? I became friends with director Gu Xiaogang through a mutual friend. After watching Xiaogang’s first feature, Dwelling in Fuchun Mountains, which went to Cannes in 2019, I was so amazed by his unique visual language of portraying Chinese “Shanshui(Mountain and Water).” When I found out he was working on his second feature, I was immediately interested.
What really pulled me in was Xiaogang’s dedication to combining “art” and “narration.” I don’t think there’s a clear line between “art films” and “commercial films.” But it’s true that most “art films” or “auteur” films appeal to a smaller audience. They tell stories differently or use unique film language to convey emotions. Film enthusiasts love it because it’s different, but most people don’t accept it for the same reason. In Dwelling in the West Lake, Xiaogang was very clear from the start that he wanted to tell a beautiful story. It was a brave choice, especially for a second-feature director, but I thought the story he wrote really reflected a generation of Chinese people. With his established visual style, I thought it had great potential to balance both art and story. "Dwelling by the West Lake" marks another significant achievement in your career. How do you perceive these honors and recognitions you've received, especially at this stage of your career? Besides its festival recognitions and achievements, Dwelling by the West Lake is my first mid-budget, theatrically-released film. I learned a lot about the process of releasing a film in theaters and what impacts the box office, things I hadn’t experienced before. I think I’ve become a more well-rounded producer now, but I still have a lot to learn.
p.191
LATEST INTERVIEW
Could you share some memorable moments from the production of "Dwelling by the West Lake" that reflect the challenges and rewards of being a film producer?
With your involvement in a range of projects, how do you balance creative freedom with commercial viability when selecting projects to produce?
No film is made easily. Dwelling by the West Lake involved the dedication and hard work of hundreds of people. I can’t pinpoint a single biggest challenge because there were so many. But when the box office hit 100 million CNY, it was a milestone in my career. It was a great reward for someone who believed in this film.
For me, telling a good story is the simplest yet hardest part. “Art films” are praised for their unique visual and sound language but often criticized for their story and characters. From my experience, leaning towards either side is doable, but balancing both is tough.
What traits do you believe are essential for a successful film producer to possess? I think a good producer needs to be insightful and sensitive to good content, opportunities, audience demands, and the market. As Robert Towne once wrote in his book:"a series of shared beliefs, in this case focusing on what was wrong with the country, created a sense of communion between filmmakers and filmgoers." A producer should think about these things before acting. Which type of film for which market and for whom? Different films need different strategies. Also, a producer should always be improving their professionalism and skills – keep evolving and learning. This way, they can keep up with the world’s development and make better movies each time.
So, our team always asks, how can we tell a story in the most unique, interesting way? The story can’t be too common, and the techniques we use can’t be too common either. It’s a compounded difficulty, but achieving both is what makes cinema great. How do you view the evolving landscape of the film industry, and how do you adapt to the changing trends and demands? I think short videos, social media, and online platforms have made it harder for theatrical films to survive. Attracting people to theaters instead of having them watch content at home or scroll through their phones is a serious challenge every filmmaker faces today. My thoughts align with what I mentioned earlier: we need to tell interesting, meaningful, and lasting stories in the most creative, beautiful, and striking way. We must treat our audience better so they keep believing in cinema.

Fil Rouge The legend of the red thread is an ancient myth of Asian origin, particularly rooted in Japanese and Chinese culture, which tells of an invisible thread that binds two people destined to meet and be important to each other. According to legend, this red thread of destiny is tied to people's little fingers and, although it may stretch or tangle, it never breaks. The concept underlines the idea that soul mates are inevitably destined to meet, regardless of circumstances or distance. This belief is often seen as a symbol of hope and eternal love, suggesting that meaningful connections in life are not random, but rather predestined. The legend of the red thread continues to inspire works of art, literature and film, captivating anyone who believes in the magic of human connection.
