ART EXHIBITION

ER ELSKEN

Coinciding with a reprint of Ed van der Elsken’s legendary photography publication ‘Amsterdam!’, the exhibition ‘Amsterdam! By Ed van der Elsken’ at the Amsterdam City Archives features in excess of 100 of the original prints used for the book. With images shot between 1947 and 1980, the exhibition provides an enthralling snapshot of a lively period of Dutch history. The dogged revolt against the authorities is captured in many photos, as is day-today life on the Amsterdam streets, post-war poverty and on the flip side, increasing prosperity in the 60s and 70s. The exhibition is complemented by an exhibition of recent street photography by Hans Eijkelboom, Reinier Gerritsen and Theo Niekus, offering a contemporary contrast to Van der Elsken’s work.

The Kwaku Festival is a traditional multicultural gathering focused on bringing people and cultures together for a vibrant combination of food, drink, dance, music and sport. Its origins lie in celebrating the abolition of slavery in Suriname and the Dutch Antilles on 1 July.

Providing a beautiful way to spend a balmy yet cultured summer evening, the Hortus Botanicus Festival brings classical music to the botanical gardens of Amsterdam. The festival brings live classical music, funky jazz and passionate tango performances.

To celebrate the freedom of anyone’s sexual preference, Amsterdam celebrates Gay Pride. During these days there are a lot of festivities. The Canal Parade on 2 August is especially worth seeing. The parade starts at the beginning of the Prinsengracht and ends at the Amstel river.

A new festival comes to Amsterdam’s NDSM wharf, bringing music, comedy, food, theatre, art and plenty of entertainment to town. Famous Dutch artists will perform at the multidisciplinary festival. Expect a karaoke bar, cinema containers and other weird and wonderful goings-on.

It’s approaching twenty years since the first edition of Dance Valley turned the hills of Spaarnwoude into the beating heart of the international dance community. The festival returns with a jam-packed edition featuring a huge array of different areas and electronic music styles.

The term ‘fringe’ literally means edge. A Fringe festival is a festival that creates an alternative niche for itself in comparison to a traditional theatre festival. Step in Fringe: with its experimental and creative line-up.

In September museums, galleries, shops and other organisations are set to immerse themselves in the world of photography as Fotoweek returns. Fotoweek is also an opportunity to get active again with your camera.

The Unseen Photo Fair is a fresh international photography fair that focuses primarily on undiscovered photography talent and unseen work by established photographers. More than fifty leading contemporary art and photography galleries are invited to participate.

The wild child of Amsterdam’s summer festival programme traditionally takes place at the NDSM Wharf in Amsterdam Noord on the first weekend of September every year. With its heavyweight lineup of DJs playing dance, electro and thumping house as well as dubstep, Valtifest caters to all tastes.

Jordaan Festival celebrates the neighbourhood’s colourful history with open-air performances by Dutch singers. The programme is always lively, featuring drum bands, opera, cabaret and mass singalongs. The festival is about ‘levensliederen’ (songs about life).

THE MAN BEHIND

ENTREPENEUR

YOSSI ELIYAHOO

Creative mastermind behind Momo, Izakaya and The Butcher Yossi Eliyahoo is the driving force behind a series of successful hospitality businesses in Amsterdam, such as MOMO, Izakaya, The Butcher and a few more in the making. According to the Israel native, despite tough economic times, there’s still plenty of room in Amsterdam for the development of high-end bars and restaurants. ‘I want to give the Dutch something new,’ Eliyahoo says. ‘But I’m not here to lecture them.’ HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED IN THE AMSTERDAM HOSPITALITY WORLD? Six years ago, a group of investors asked me if I wanted to set up MOMO, the bar at the Park Hotel. I took up this task immediately. I think that the capital city was lacking a luxury dimension in its hospitality industry. Until 2008, there were mainly restaurants, bistros and grand cafes with French menus. With MOMO I wanted to give people something new—a fresh and open business with a signif icant Asian inf luence, with small portions that were all about the f lavour and quality of the ingredients, without too much fuss.

“I’m not making restaurants. I make experiences”

IZAKAYA

YOU HAVE SAID THAT YOU WANT TO BRING NEW YORK AND LONDON TO THE NETHERLANDS? I am inspired by businesses such as Nobu in New York and Zuma, London’s top restaurant. There it’s about hospitality, seeing and being seen and the experience. I have always tried to give my guests something new, something cosmopolitan. Food that they couldn’t make for themselves at home. I work with some of the most highly regarded chefs in Europe and use only the best ingredients. But I don’t want to lecture the Dutch; I will happily make accommodations for individual needs. Luckily, the Dutch have a culinary tradition with many inf luences from the Asian world. That works well with my modern philosophy. IT STILL SEEMS THAT IT’S NOT AN EASY TIME FOR THE HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY? It doesn’t burden me, in any case. After MOMO, I opened Izakaya bar-restaurant in Amsterdam’s De Pijp neighbourhood, and The Butcher burger restaurant. Things are going well with all three. With these openings, I’ve noticed that the Dutch are absolutely not as frugal as they

are generally assumed to be. They are trendy and have style. Above all, their travels abroad have taught them to value the luxury segment of the hospitality industry. People are dining out more and more here, and lunch has been much more than just a cheese sandwich for a long time. I have noticed that people want more and more quality for their money. THE DUTCH ARE KNOWN FOR BECOMING BORED WITH A BAR QUICKLY? My clients are critical. To stay new, you must invest continuously in the décor and in the menu. Anyway, I hope that my businesses aren’t just about hype. I want them to become a permanent offering in Amsterdam—that visitors to the capital city will also visit my restaurants and bars. SO YOU’RE PLANNING TO STAY FOR A LITTLE WHILE? For the time being, I still see enough opportunities in Amsterdam. So, I’m busy with the development of the W Hotel, in the old post off ice right behind the Palace on the Dam. And I’ve gotten involved with event organizer ID&T with starting up a club and bar in the old Shell tower behind the central station in Amsterdam North. Also, I would

as many as they would like. The food is prepared on a large robata grill with an open kitchen. Using a variety of tonics based on the ancient Japanese spirit Shochu, the cocktails are quite impressive.

MOMO

THE BUTCHER

Taking its name from the Japanese meaning for blossom and beauty, MOMO is located in the bustling city centre. MOMO has grown beyond its role as a restaurant; it revitalizes a century old, dormant relationship of its corner building with its surroundings, turning the area into a sort of small city square. An open Asian-Fusion kitchen provides guests the exciting experience of watching the chefs at their energetic work. Designed for sharing, the menu offers dishes from sushi to Wagyu beef to Shanghai pok choi.

The Butcher serves top-quality burgers, prepared on the spot using the freshest ingredients without losing perspective of good value for money. Attention to detail at all levels, gives The Butcher a distinctive tone of voice and standout appearance. MOMO THE BOOK This summer Yossi Eliyahoo presents the highly anticipated and breathlessly awaited manual on how to cook like they do in MOMO. In collaboration with the international top photographer Dan Perez and master chef Hari Shetty, Eliyahoo made a stunning lifestyle and cook book. Read all about the famous dishes, interior, cocktails, people and the success of MOMO Restaurant, Bar & Lounge. The photography is breathtaking. Simple, striking and ref ined. Pre-register now and reserve your copy of MOMO The Book. momo-book.com

IZAKAYA Izakaya, which loosely means ‘pub’ in Japanese, recently opened its doors in De Pijp. As a Japanese grill with South American inf luences, the restaurant puts its own spin on Japanese food culture. The dishes come as tapas and are meant for sharing, giving guests the opportunity to test

SIGHTS SIGHTSEEING

WALKING TOURS EDITOR: JESSICA SLICER PHOTOGRAPHER: JOOP REUVECAMP

Amsterdam offers numerous recreational and cultural sights from fascinating old buildings to breathtaking neighbourhoods like the Old Side, De Wallen, the Jordaan and the Grachtengordel. Everyone knows the famous Amsterdam museums, but there is much more. A stroll through Amsterdam reveals a city filled with history and charm. The lively Dam Square, with the Royal Palace and the Nieuwe Kerk, marks the heart of the city centre. From bustling shopper’s-havens like the 9 Streets to lovely squares like the Spui, it has much to offer. Escape at the Begijnhof, a peaceful hidden courtyard edged with charming almhouses. Beyond this heart lies the rest of Amsterdam: a series of concentric and bisecting canals, known as the Grachtengordel (canal ring). Lined with centuries-old gabled canal houses, the area has remained beautifully intact to this day. And it’s not just a preserved open-air museum; it is still the functional and friendly heart of the city, where locals and visitors alike create a vibrant energy. Heading farther will lead wanderers across humpbacked bridges and through alleys filled with countless café terraces and eyecandy architecture.

BRIDGES

MAPPA

At Bridges, inspired by Ron Blaauw it’s all about fish. Always the best fish and only when in season. Executive chef Joris Bijdendijk presents a wide variety of fresh fish and seafood, both in our restaurant and in the Raw Bar. Oysters, lobster sandwiches, delicate fish tartar and ocean fresh fish, everything prepared while you watch. You can eat in the restaurant as well as dine in the exclusive privacy of the Private Dining, with view of the Vinothèque, the climatized domain of the sommelier and his fine selection of wines. There is also a possibility to dine in the harmonious inner garden. It is one of Amsterdam’s best kept secrets. An oasis of peace and tranquility, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Our Executive Chef Joris Bijdendijk serves modern and trendy dishes in Restaurant Bridges with an emphasis on seafood and fish, mostly Dutch organic produce with a French twist. Bridges was awarded a Michelin star in November 2013. At the Raw Bar, located in the heart of our restaurant, one of our chefs prepares dishes creating lively interaction with our guests. Bridges’ Cocktail Bar offers exclusive wines and vintage champagnes by the glass. International cocktails, shaken by our professional mixologists, together with wine flights will be served matching bites. Our sommelier Jasper van den Hoogen tastes and selects the wine in the Vinothèque. He serves specially composed wine arrangements and vintage champagnes. Most wines can be ordered per glass.

In the very heart of the city on the historical street Nes, Mappa is situated in a former coffee house opened in 1810 by the Frascati brothers who became famous for their very popular Frascati Café (from 1940 on). Later, the building was used as a theater with Frascati Café as a part of it. Since 2001, however, restaurant Mappa is the happy occupant. Mappa offers Italian cuisine and “everything is home-made and made with love.” Authentic Italian food is what Mappa offers, and the restaurant is proud of the fact that all its home-made dishes are made from fresh, biological products. Mappa is mainly known for its variety of pasta dishes, but besides the pastas it also has some beautiful antipasti (starters) and a few fish and meat specialties. The menu at Mappa is changed regularly to ensure creativity and quality in the kitchen.

PONT 13

LUCIUS SEAFOOD

Restaurant Pont 13 is housed on an old ferry (pont=ferry) built in 1927. Until the 1990s, it used to travel back and forth across the IJ lake. When it was declared ready for the scrap heap, René Langendijk bought it to turn it into his dream restaurant. Since 2005, Pont 13 has its anchorage at the romantic post-industrial Westelijke Houthavens, characterized by a great deal of cultural development. A beautiful place to be, with a wonderful skyline – the Amsterdam harbor, interesting new architecture, and numerous boats of all kinds.

AMSTEL BRASSERIE The Amstel Hotel is the first ‘Grand Hotel’ in Amsterdam and received its first guests in 1867. In both building and restaurants you can feel the grandeur of those days. If you care to enjoy a Michelin-star dinner thenvisit the famous La Rive, for a fancy high tea choose the Amstel Lounge and special cocktails are served in the A Bar. We are guests in the Amstel Brasserie, which seems to be the ideal middle in all the Amstel splendor. At our cozy table at the window, our colorful salad of Canadian lobster is served. Slowly cooked and therefore very soft. Along with mango, chokra-beetroots, curry mayonnaise and a crunch of sourdough makes it a fresh summery dish. Accompanied by a biological Guillemot-Michel Quintaine.

Outside water taxis, tour boats and rowers sail past us at the Amstel and we are surprised by a side dish of beetroot marinated salmon with watermelon; beautiful summer red with a distinctive fresh taste. Followed by magnificent main courses: a “catch of the day” - prawn, tuna and halibut, topped with a froth of shellfish. Sumptuous soft high level flavors, combined with a perfectly selected South African Chenin Blanc. And a beautiful piece of lamb with tabouleh with mint and lime, a quenelle of zucchini and barbecued carrots. The firm Campi Magri Ripasso nicely complements the dish. Dessert, a tasting of sweet delights, along with a sparkling Moscato d’Asti. A tempting conclusion of a beautiful dinner on a fantastic location. You can enjoy a three-course menu with many of the above delights for only €36.

What a great experience to discover all those culinary gems in the bento box

YAMAZATO RESTAURANT Yamazato restaurant was the first traditional Japanese restaurant in Europe with a Michelin star. Besides high expectations, it also stimulated our curiosity. It’s just something mysterious, a kitchen brigade that only speaks Japanese, a chef who has been apprentice with his predecessor for twenty years and now maintains the high honor, far away from his homeland.

MASANORI TOMIKAWA Learned his skills by working in the kitchen with his preceptor Akira Oshima for twenty years. In 2010 he took over and became the Executive Chef of Yamazato. He was able to maintain the Michelin star of 2002 effortlessly. Tomikawa cooks according to the traditions of the Kaiseki cuisine, Japanese haute cuisine.

The interior looks serene, clean. It is decorated in traditional 15th century Sukiya style and overlooks a Japanese garden. Yamazato is on the ground floor of the luxurious Hotel Okura. We enjoy a special lunch today: the bento box. A bento box is originally nothing more than a convenient way to transport a meal. In Yamazato the so called Shokado bento box is used: a big, beautiful lacquered box specially made to serve meals in restaurants.

59

What delights are served in the box? We find tempura fried shrimp and oba leaf. Lighty cooked pieces of sea bream in a delicious sauce. There is sashimi of salmon, tuna and scallop. But the most spectacular delights are the seven different mini-dishes, one even more sophisticated than the other. With names like “shirozake-yaki” (grilled black cod with sake lees) and “kamu rosu-ni” (lightly simmered duck breast with sweet soy sauce) and flavors that tingle on your tongue. Shaved radish with lemon & salt and tempura are served for dipping in soy sauce. Also, a rice dish with crab and egg is on the table; delicious, but the contents of the bento box draws all the attention. The dessert consists of a refined dish with a cherry blossom macaron and summer fruits. In addition, a scoup of green tea ice cream with a sesame cookie. It is fresh and not too sweet and complements the meal very well. What a great experience to discover all those culinary gems in the bento box, and probably one of the most special lunches that you can enjoy in Amsterdam.

ART CULTURE

SPIEGEL

kwartier

The Art and Antiques District EDITOR INEZ STERTEFELD

Been soaking in those Old Masters at the big museums? Staring in awe at exquisite porcelain, perhaps? Has it whetted your appetite for a little something of your own? The Spiegelkwartier is a treasure-trove of arts and antiques, yours for the picking on the Rijksmuseum’s doorstep - and just minutes away from the other big museums, too. At the Spiegelgracht and Spiegelstraat more than 70 art and antique dealers offer a variety of objects. If you collect antiques or modern art, a visit to the Spiegelkwartier (Quarter) is definitely worthwhile. This historic quarter with its typical old Dutch houses is just across the bridge opposite the Rijksmuseum. The area is the heart of the national art and antiques trade for 100 years and has a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. There are few places in the world where you will find such an amazing selection of art and antiques. More than 70 specialized art and antique dealers offer a wide variety of objects, ranging from archaeological finds to 19th century furniture, Delftware and 21th century ceramics, oriental art to Art Deco jewelry, folk art from exotic places to contemporary art, clocks and don’t forget sculptures, paintings and Dutch Old Masters.

Nowadays the Nieuwe (New) Spiegelstraat and Spiegelgracht are the home base of art and antique dealers. This was different in the old days and the result of a development that has taken place in Amsterdam during the past 120 years. Without the building of the Rijksmuseum, the street would almost certainly have had another look. Amsterdam was slightly growing in the first fifty years of the nineteenth century but got a huge boost by the industrial revolution in the second half. The city expanded beyond the Singel canal; new residential areas were created and the Rijksmuseum was built just outside the Singel canal between 1877 and 1885, on the spot of an old mill. In the Nieuwe Spiegelstraat and Spiegelgracht, named after mayor Hendrick Dircksz Spiegel (Mirror), lived many artisans who offered their services to the canal residents. It was not a wealthy neighborhood: the less fortunate fellow citizens lived in poor and unhealthy housing conditions in this neighborhoods. There were all kinds of businesses established as watchmakers, upholsterers, furniture repairers and plumbers. Most of these stores are no longer found in the Spiegelkwartier but nearby you can still find manufacturers of beautiful frames and goldsmiths.

63

ART CULTURE The development of the Spiegel Quarter to center of art and antiques starts from 1900 on; art dealer Henriquez de Souza was already known at Kerkstraat 219. In 1910, seven antique dealers settled in and in 1920 there were twelve. The Rijksmuseum started to make regular purchases in the Spiegelkwartier. The names Schilling and Aronson were already mentioned in address books before the war. After 1945, the number of antique dealers is steadily expanding, and the diversity of the collections is varied. Most purchases in the Rijksmuseum from the Spiegel Quarter were applied art such as pottery, furniture, jewelry, glass and textiles; no coincidence for the nearby antiquarians are specialized in these objects and evidence of historically developed ties with the Rijksmuseum. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Rijksmuseum in 1985, an exhibition was organized with a choice of the objects purchased in the Spiegelkwartier in the past century. The first purchase is dated 1914, but even today the Rijksmuseum still buys objects in the Spiegelkwartier.

During the year there are several exhibition periods: MAY: The Amsterdam Trail is situated in and around the Spiegelkwartier. Contemporary artists will exhibit their work in galleries specialized in ethnographic and Asiatic art. The contemporary art is exhibited in between the statues, masks, ritual objects and jewelry from Africa, Oceania, Asia and South-America. - www.amsterdamtrail.nl

Tucked in between these Aladdin’s Caves are fashion boutiques and shoe shop, as well as cafés and restaurants perfect for a little time out - whether you feel like a bowl of healthy soup or coffee & cake; a light lunch or a lobster dinner.

SEPTEMBER: OPEN! is situated in and around the Spiegelkwartier. More than 70 antique shops and art galleries show their new acquisitions, there are special exhibitions, lectures, and you can see artists at work.

The Spiegelkwartier is directly opposite the Rijksmuseum and at a stones-throw from the van Gogh Museum, the Allard Person Museum and around 10 minutes’ walk from the Hermitage. A pleasant way to get there is by Canal Bus (Rijksmuseum stop) or by the Stop/Go bus. SPIEGELKWARTIER.NL

The St. Olofs Chapel in the NH Barbizon Palace Hotel dates from 1.440 and is one of the finest meeting venues in Amsterdam; one of the oldest buildings combined with all the amenities of today. In the old days the St. Olofs Chapel stood alongside the city-gate with its entrance to the sea wall. Amsterdam maintained a flourishing trade with Norway and to please the Norwegian sailors, the Chapel was named after a Norwegian saint and patron saint of sailors. In the late nineteen eighties the Amsterdam Monuments Restoration Foundation withdrew the fate of this once beautiful Chapel and took over the building for Hfl 1,- if she would take care of the restoration. The immense restoration was finished in 1993. Because of its unique location in the lively heart of the characteristic historic center of Amsterdam, just a stone’s throw from the Central Station, with private dock and its cozy atmosphere the St. Olofs Chapel is a perfect location for meetings, seminars, weddings and parties for up to 500 guests.

Art Hotel Spaander is located in the centre of Volendam, which is one of the most famous villages of the Netherlands situated north of Amsterdam at the IJsselmeer - the former Zuiderzee. The hotel is named after Leendert Spaander (1855-1955) who started a small cafe on the Dike with his wife Aaltje in 1881. He invited artists working in Volendam and the cafe became a place where they could work together and inspire one another; painting the scenery as well as people in traditional costumes. Also foreign artists were invited; they were in fact the first tourists to Volendam. The pieces of art Leendert received out of gratitude and sometimes as payment for a hotelroom were all put up thoughout the building; a historical collection of paintings was born. Nowadays the 77 modern hotelrooms are all different in decoration and luxury. Room number 1 is de first and oldest room and is still in its original state. In the tavern and in the restaurant tasteful dishes are served; classics as well as new and sophisticated ones.

DISTRICTS & NEIGHBOURHOODS

Beyond Amsterdam’s best known sights and attractions are hidden gems just waiting to be discovered, such as a host of quirky museums, charming and fabulous shopping districts, fantastic antiques, a thriving Chinatown and an impressive library with plenty of foreign language titles. In the center you will of course find the magnificent canals, but there is so much more besides. The inner city, for instance, is bursting with interesting museums, sometimes hidden behind beautiful canalside façades. Most visitors to Amsterdam rarely wander beyond the arched bridges, watery passageways and crooked canal houses of the enchanting city center. But equally fascinating is the development boom in the eastern, southern and western part of town.

In the Spiegelkwartier the art lovers will be in their element: virtually every building houses a gallery. Various a variety of dining establishments representing all types of Asian cuisine can be found on the lively Zeedijk, Amsterdam’s Chinatown. South (Zuid) is one of the most beautiful areas in Amsterdam, where historical buildings define its impressive character. You will find Amsterdam’s famous museums, the Royal Concertgebouw, the Vondelpark and the exclusive and stylish boutiques.

NEIGHBOURHOODS

In Noord (North) you discover an exciting world on the other side of the River IJ – Amsterdam Noord. Noord is not only spacious and green, but also inspiring and vibrant. Here you will find an exciting mix of experimental festivals, picturesque country villages and stylish restaurants on the water. Go there by ferry from Central Station and explore Noord on a bike.

RED LIGHT DISTRICT (CENTRE)

The majority of people have heard about Amsterdam’s Red Light District well before their visit. Leaving nothing to the imagination, some stereotypes about this area are true: there are plenty of sex shops, peep shows, brothels, an elaborate condom shop, a sex museum and prostitutes in red-lit windows. But the heart of Amsterdam is much more than that. HELLOAMS.NL/37

In East (Oost) major neighbourhoods are vibrant multicultural areas. Neighbourhoods like Oosterpark, Dapperbuurt and Indischebuurt are very much upcoming. Nowadays it happens in East. Grap your bike and drive around in this beautifully shaped part of town.

JORDAAN (CENTRE)

The Jordaan is probably the most famous neighbourhood in the Netherlands. The Jordaan is nothing but highlights. Maze-like streets offer hidden courtyards, cafés, art galleries, specialty shops, canals and canal houses, and home of the more scenic outdoor markets in the country. In particular, Noordermarkt has a flea market on Monday mornings and an organic farmers’ market on Saturdays.

Around the canals you find wonderful markets to stroll round, such as the Noordermarkt, where stylists often buy clothing for photo shoots. At any rate, shopping is a treat as soon as you stray from the beaten track. Get lost in the Jordaan or in the Negen Straatjes (Nine Streets) – lanes that link the canals and where the most exclusive and original shops can be found, just like in the Haarlemmerbuurt

A formerly workingclass neighbourhood, today de Pijp is home to a multicultural community and the city’s largest market, The Albert Cuyp Market. De Pijp’s multitude of ethnic restaurants and trendy bars, will leave you spoiled for choice. HELLOAMS.NL/44

OUD WEST (WEST)

OUD ZUID (OLD SOUTH)

Diverse, densely populated and central, Oud West has become a very popular neighbourhood for the upwardly mobile. It’s also an older, more settled, neighbourhood where in general the population describes itself as very ‘satisfied’ with their living situation. And with Vondelpark on hand, why wouldn’t they? HELLOAMS.NL/41

Regarded as the poshest neighbourhood in Amsterdam, Oud Zuid has a decadent mix of culture and shopping. Oud Zuid is central: on one end you have Amsterdam’s nightlife and culture square Leidseplein and on the other Amstelveenseweg that is developing into a true culinary boulevard. HELLOAMS.NL/45

NIGHTLIFE AREAS

REMBRANDTPLEIN

When it comes to nightlife in Amsterdam, there are venues, dance festivals and club nights to suit every taste. DJs keep the crowd going with everything from techno, dub step and trance to hip-hop, funk and deep house. Some of the most well-known venues include Paradiso, Melkweg, Bitterzoet, Club Up, Trouw, AIR and Escape. Find the clubs anywhere between the Leidseplein, Reguliersdwarsstraat, Rembrandtplein in the city centre and Weesperzijde in Amsterdam East.

Rembrandtplein is often considered to be the heart of the Amsterdam nightlife scene, so it’s not surprising that many of the city’s most popular clubs and bars can be found here. HELLOAMS.NL/47

LEIDSEPLEIN

Leidseplein is one of the majors centres of Amsterdam nightlife and, on any night, throngs of young people can be seen coming and going from the many bars, clubs and pubs around the square. You could spend a whole weekend at Amsterdam’s bustling Leidseplein and still not see everything. This is the true heart of the city and it pulses with bars, restaurants, clubs and theatres.

The fun in Amsterdam doesn’t stop when the sun goes down, and the crowded bars and clubs are testimony to this fact. If you’re out in the evening and think bars look deserted, it’s only because Amsterdam’s nightlife starts rather late and you’re probably out too early. With most clubs not opening their doors before 11.30pm and the party not taking off until 1am, many bars and lounges are full of pre-drinkers waiting to embark on a night out. Most bars in Amsterdam are small and rather crowded, so it’s often difficult to find a comfortable spot. However, the cramped nature of these venues is a result of the fact that they’re housed in many historic buildings, which are charming in their own right and offer an alternative nightlife experience. The city’s nightlife is concentrated around two main squares: the Rembrandtplein and Leidseplein, so you always have plenty of options. As a result, a night out in Amsterdam can be a very cultural experience - even if you can’t remember it the next morning.

SHOPPING AREAS

PC HOOFTSTRAAT

The PC Hooftstraat is one of the 30 world-famous shopping streets in the world. Amsterdam‘s mini Fifth Avenue is home to high-end classics (Chanel, Gucci, Hermés, Louis Vuitton), jewelry (Chopard, Cartier) and lifestyle stores, as well as several boutiques selling more luxury labels. HELLOAMS.NL/53

Amsterdam is a shopper’s dream with everything from multistory department stores and exclusive boutiques to antiques and contemporary Dutch design, Amsterdam inspires even the most discerning shopper.

SPIEGELKWARTIER

9 STREETS

Amsterdam’s Spiegelkwartier is an absolute must for lovers of art, antiques and curiosities. This area has been at the heart of the Dutch art and antiques trade for over eighty years. Exploring the historic Spiegelkwartier is easy to combine with a visit to the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum. HELLOAMS.NL/54

Between Leidsestraat and Raadhuisstraat there is an area known as De 9 Straatjes (The 9 Streets), named after the nine side streets connecting the main canals. Together they constitute a charming neighbourhood full of unique shops, wonderful places to have lunch and a great atmosphere. HELLOAMS.NL/50

KALVERSTRAAT AND LEIDSESTRAAT

HERENSTRAAT/PRINSENSTRAAT

Three main shopping streets in Amsterdam’s city centre are the Nieuwedijk, Kalverstraat en Leidsestraat. In the first two you find shops and mega malls you would expect to find in any large European city. The Leidsestraat has the more exclusive shops.

Discover cosy cafés and delicious food or admire fashion, art and more in a selection of small, elegant shops. The Prinsenstraat and Herenstraat are an excellent introduction to the essence of Amsterdam. HELLOAMS.NL/51
