Rembrandt and the Dutch Golden Age 2019 Celebrating the Golden Age and its master painter

2019 is an exciting year for fans of Dutch Golden Age master Rembrandt. It marks the 350th anniversary of his death in 1669. A year-long celebration is about to start to commemorate him and his legacy. It promises to be an extraordinary year, packed with special exhibitions and events throughout the Netherlands. With museums like Rijksmuseum and The Rembrandt House Museum, Amsterdam is one of the centers of these festivities.

Rijksmuseum

With 22 paintings, the Rijksmuseum holds the largest collection of paintings by Rembrandt worldwide. It must not come as a surprise that the museum celebrates Rembrandt and the Dutch Golden Age 2019 lavishly. From 15 February to 10 June 2019, All the Rembrandts shows you the entire collection in all its glory. Expect to admire no less than 22 paintings, 60 drawings, and over 300 prints by the Golden Age master. Starting July 2019, you can witness a truly remarkable art event. The Rijksmuseum enables its visitors to have a live view on the restoration of Rembrandt’s most celebrated masterpiece The Night Watch. The painting will be encased in a glass chamber, where it remains on display during the restoration process. In addition, a digital platform allows beholders from all over the world to follow the process online. The last quarter of 2019 is reserved for a comprehensive overview of paintings by two masters of the seventeenth century. In Rembrandt – Velázquez, you can have a look at the works of Rembrandt and his Spanish contemporary. The Dutch and Spanish masterpieces will be exhibited in pairs and accompanied by the art of Murillo, Vermeer, Zurbarán, Hals, and Ribera.

Rembrandt House Museum

As a former residence of Rembrandt, the Rembrandt House Museum joins in on the festivities of 2019. The exhibition Rembrandt's Social Network explores the role of his friends and acquaintances in his life and work. Rembrandt was a keen networker, using his connections for his art practice. Childhood friends, art connoisseurs and fellow artists all played their part in the rise of the genius we know today. In June, the exhibition Inspired by Rembrandt by the Rembrandt House proves that it has a collection to be proud of. Rembrandt’s etchings are well-represented, but the museum also has prints by his predecessors and contemporaries. Modern and contemporary artists who were inspired by Rembrandt will also be on display. The year finishes with Laboratory Rembrandt, in which the art of Rembrandt is analyzed according to the latest scientifical methods. 028

A bunch of Belgian burger enthusiasts getting together and creating a dynamic burger brand, that values sustainability and brings together the best products and people. We were very eager to go and try their burgers, as Ellis is in continuous collaboration with star-rated chiefs to improve their top-shelf hamburgers. And with success, in the meantime they have 13 outposts in Belgium, 7 in The Netherlands, 3 in Paris, and counting. Join the cool crowd at this hip Jordaan gastro-bar, which has turned appetizer hour into an art form. Open from breakfast until late, you’ll find moreish mini sandwiches, six varieties of shareable appetizer platters and bar bites such as bruschetta with beef & foie gras, Parmesan fried chicken or feta & blackberry pizza. It is the perfect place to meet your friends or family for a drink, a chat and something yummy to eat. There’s also a southern satellite at Sarphatipark.

You simply can’t visit Amsterdam without trying Indonesian food, a now nearnative remnant of Old Dutch colonial rule in the former East Indies. For the real deal, head to this warmly decorated “eternal temple” on busy Rozengracht, where Indonesian staff dressed in traditional garb present authentic dishes, prepared by a Balinese chef using only old family recipes. Arrive with an appetite and order the rijsttafel (“rice table”) for a feast of flavours and aromas that will delight all your senses.

Shahjahan Indian restaurant in the heart of Amsterdam is the heart and soul of many Amsterdammers, Indian and Dutch alike. Authentic and aromatic Indian food at Shahjahan touches the right chords making every visit an everlasting experience for the visitors. The chef and staff here vouches for unforgettable experience for first time as well as repeat customers. Eat it to believe it!

With no menu or table service, this is no ordinary restaurant. In fact, Pesca calls itself a “fish theatre”, because it’s all about “the experience” here. First, you stop by a “fish market” where the “fishmongers” help you to choose your seafood. Next, you pass by the “wine market” to select your wine. Then, you are given a buzzer and can take a seat. When the buzzer goes, your food and drink are ready. This fun concept has won the restaurant many fans, and even a prestigious Entrée Magazine Award (a leading Dutch hospitality magazine) for the Best New Concept in 2016.

BetsuBara Located in a trendy part of Amsterdam West, you’ll find a restaurant with a fresh, hip interior, an easy-going vibe and a mysterious name. In English there’s a saying about always having “room for dessert”, even after you’ve declared you just can’t eat another bite, and the Japanese actually have a word for it, betsubara, which literally means “separate stomach”. At Restaurant Betsubara you’ll need that extra room to fit everything you’ll want to try, from umami-rich Japanese streetfoods like ramen soup, soba noodles and some of the city’s best gyoza to Japanese-inspired cocktails like the signature Matcha Mule and cult classics like Neko Jusu, a drink with orange and ginger. DISTRICT GUIDE

Amsterdam West

Your essential guide to Amsterdam’s young & hip West.

KINKERSTRAAT

Tired of elbowing your way through the crowds in busy Centrum? Go West, where a young demographic ensures there’s plenty to see and do.

DE ZEVENL ANDENHUIZEN

WESTERGAS TERRAS

With almost half of its population aged between 25 and 44, it’s no surprise that West is one of Amsterdam’s most exciting and popular districts. But, because the borough is also one of Amsterdam’s largest, officially including Westerpark, De Baarsjes and parts of Bos en Lommer, we’re focusing our district guide on the part formerly known as Oud-West (“Old West”), which is bordered by the Vondelpark and the canals Singelgracht, Hugo de Grootgracht and Kostverlorenvaart.

DE FOODHALLEN

What’s now known as West started as a footpath to the nearby village of Sloten. This later developed into the Overtoom and the pilgrim’s route Heiligeweg (part of which still exists in Centrum). In the 17th-century, large landowners built manorial estates and inns along the waters of the Overtoomsevaart, but parts of this polderland was also home to heavy industry, windmills and a notorious pesthouse for the terminally ill and infectious. By the late

Just north-west of Vondelpark you’ll find a row of houses on a small street, which were inspired by the building styles of seven European countries, from Gothic German to the English cottage style, and from Moorish Spanish influences to Loire valley romanticism. Designed by Tjeerd Cuipers, this style of architecture is emblematic of the 19th-century obsession with exoticism. Roemer Visscherstraat 20-20 19th century, old Amsterdam was bursting its seams, and the construction of a new neighbourhood began. Throughout its history, the area has been home to artists and writers, which is many streets here are named after novelists, poets and writers such as Jan Frederik Helmers, Anna Louisa Geertruida Bosboom-Touissaint and Jacob van Lennep. Famous Amsterdammers who shaped the neighbourhood have included architect P.J.H Cuypers, feminist Aletta Jacobs, and war-time resistance hero Piet Nak. HELLOAMS.COM

DISTRICTS

VONDELPARK We’ll start our walking tour of the neighbourhood in the 19th-century Vondelpark, which is visited by over 10 million people every year. In the winter the park’s a great place to take in various artworks, including The Fish (1965) sculpture by the famous artist Pablo Picasso. Or visit one of several restaurants and cafes, playgrounds and scenic spots in the 47 ha park. Named after Joost van den Vondel, the most prominent Dutch poet and playwright of the 17th-century, who’s commemorated with a bronze statue on the Western edge of the park.

HOLLANDSE MANEGE

THINGS I LIKE THINGS I LOVE

VONDELKERK Exiting the park near the Vondel statue, you’ll find yourself on Vondelstraat, and at number 120 there’s a charming 1880s church designed in the Gothic revival style by the famous architect P.J.H. Cuypers, who was also responsible for the Rijksmuseum and Centraal Station. Today, it’s home to various offices and a regular roster of classical music concerts and events.

VONDELPARK3

HOLLANDSCHE MANEGE The Netherlands’ oldest horse riding school is also situated along the Vondelstraat. Inspired by the exuberant Baroque interior of Vienna’s Spanish Riding School, the Hollandsche Manege was designed in the 1880s by A.L. van Gendt, who opted for a palatial style with classic and baroque features. If you exit the stables on the other side, you’ll find yourself on Overtoom, once a waterway, now a wide, busy street where there are a few antique shops and vintage stores.

WILHELMINA GASTHUIS The Helmersbuurt, just west of Overtoom, offers a lovely mix of leafy residential lanes, with a few cafes and cultural hotspots and a tendy shopping street or two. At its centre is a landmark known as the Wilhelmina Gasthuis. It is named for a Queen of the Netherlands (from 1890-1948) who laid the foundation stone of this hospital on 28 May 1891, when she was just 10 years old. This (then) new-style hospital replaced the pesthouse and controversial Buitengasthuis that stood on the site before. After the hospital merged with another in the 80s and moved away, some buildings were repurposed as apartments, artists’ ateliers and offices for social- and creative industries, forming a village-like oasis inside an otherwise urban landscape. Today, there is also a cultural centre, called Lab111, in a former pathological laboratory here (see cultural hotspots).

BEST STORES

Two stylists are behind the well-curated collection of Scandi-Dutch homewares, local jewellery and own-label clothing at Things I Like Things I Love (Eerste Constantijn Huygensstraat 25-27). Travelling with kids? A play-pen stocked with toys will keep your toddler occupied at Wijs West (Bilderdijkstraat 62) while you enjoy your latte or shop designer kids’ clothing and toys. At urban greenery boutique Wildernis (Bilderdijkstraat 165F) there’s everything you need to green up your home or garden, from own-design hanging planters and the most beautiful ceramic pots to trendy pancake plants. At funky Johnny at the Spot ( Jan Pieter Heijestraat 94) you’ll find the latest fashion (M/F) and home accessories. The Maker Store (Hannie Dankbaarpassage 39) is the place to pick up that perfect locally-made souvenir: a marble bowl by Stoned, perhaps, or a selection of Dutch-brewed Lowlander Beer. Or treat your travel-weary skin to SMPL skincare’s 100% natural boosting serum.

BAR KARAKTER

BEST BARS

Head to Bar Branie (Ten Katestraat 26a) for affordable cocktails and Asian bar bites - the Burmese tea salad and chilli pork wontons are particularly good. Or for a winning combo of local craft beer, bao buns and karaoke, there’s Bar Karakter (De Clerqstraat 75H). Discover even more local brews at Gollem’s Proeflokaal (Overtoom 160-162), which offers 22 beers on tap and over 180 by the bottle. If wine’s more your thing, Bar Centraal (Ten Katestraat 16) offers a good selection of vin naturel wines and flavourful fusion food. With its large terrace, Lokaal Edel (Postjesweg 1) is a good spot if there’s some unseasonably warm weather, and the Friday afternoon drinks here are legendary.

THE GUIDE

With a higher concentration of plant-based restaurants than any other part of the city, West is a vegan’s dream district. Head to Vegan Junk Food Bar (Staringplein 22) for smothered fries, Mastino V (Bilderdijkstraat 192H) for vegan/gluten-free pizza, The Dutch Weed Burger Joint (Nicholas Beetstraat 47) for seaweed burgers and Meatless District (Bilderdijkstraat 65-67) for “rainbow wraps”, “sunshine bowls” and the like.

LAB111 MENEER DE WIT

HAPPYHAPPYJOYJOY

JAN PIETER HEIJESTRA AT At the heart of the Helmersbuurt, between Overtoom and Kinkerstraat, is one of West’s best indie shopping streets, nicknamed ‘the J.P’ by locals. Here, you’ll find plenty of trendy fashion boutiques, including a couple just for the kids, as well as a kitchen supply shop, a vintage store and a funky concept store. There are also a few good restaurants and cafes along this street.

Start the day the healthy way at Voldaan ( Jan Pieter Heijestraat 121), which offers plenty of vegetarian choices as well as the usual Eggs Benedict, and more. All-day Oriental bar and kitchen Umami by Han (Overtoom 31HS) proves that good, affordable food and great service can go hand in hand. Spaghetteria West ( Jan Hanzenstraat 32) offers that most elusive of Amsterdam finds: a moreish meal (pasta, obviously) for a palatable price. For some of the city’s tastiest grilled chicken, head to Rotisserie Amsterdam (De Clerqstraat 81H). Or, for pan-Asian crowd-pleasers (think rainbow bao buns, dumplings, spiced shrimp) in a delightfully kitsch décor, try the cheerfully named HappyHappyJoyJoy (Bilderdijkstraat 156HS).

HALLENBUURT JAN PIETER HEIJESTRAAT

CULTUR AL HOTSPOTS

West has long been a cultural breeding ground for talent, and there’s plenty to see and do in the district. At Lab111 (Arie Biemondstraat 111) you can watch arthouse films (recent specials included Bergman100: A centennial retrospective on Ingmar Bergman and American Dreams: The Complete Filmography of David Lynch), grab dinner at Strangelove restaurant (the dinner and a movie ticket is a good deal at €20) or peruse work by a changing roster of upcoming artists in the adjacent exposition space. Cultural centre OT301 (Overtoom 301) offers a wide-ranging roster of alternative art, music, film, dance, theatre and workshops as well as an organic, vegan restaurant. At Meneer de Wit, Centre for Art and Culture (Baarsjesweg 202) you can enjoy chamber music concerts, art and photography workshops, dance lessons and performances.

At the end of ‘the J.P.’, you’ll make your way to busy Kinkerstraat shopping street, with its mix of local and international chains, discounters and some hipper, newer stores, plus a wide variety of eateries and bars. De Hallenbuurt can be found on the other side of this street. Named after the super successful redeveloped former tram depot turned cultural hotspot at its heart (see landmarks), this part of Oud-West is quickly gentrifying as hip bars replace shady shisha lounges and gourmet coffee spots move into abandoned old cafes.

TEN K ATEMARKT Crossing through De Hallenbuurt, this busy neighbourhood market on its eponymous street has been a popular shopping destination for over 100 years. It’s a bargain shoppers paradise, where you can stock up on fresh produce, cheese, fabrics and cheap clothing, but most of all it’s a place to sniff up a bit of local culture and see how the locals live.

Westerpark is home to many colourful shops, but perhaps none more so than Tony’s Chocolonely (tonyschocolonely. com), where you’ll find delicious slave-free chocolate bars in brightly hued wrappers. Shop vintage items at the eclectic Emporium of Wonders (facebook.com/ emporiumofwonders) or check out QicQ (qicq.nl) for the latest e-bikes. Pass by the Haarlemmerpoort and across the Willemsbrug bridge to enter the residential Westerpark neighbourhood and the park that gave it its name. Wild, marshy and desolate until relatively recently in Amsterdam’s history, Westerpark was constructed at the end of the 19th-century to house blue-collar workers from the nearby railway and docks after the completion of the North Sea Canal. Past decades have seen the area undergo a dramatic transformation, largely due to the regeneration of the former gasworks. Today, the neighbourhood has a unique cultural character and a 36,000-strong population that is largely young and hip. The park has become one of Amsterdam’s most beloved hangouts for young and old, any time of the year.

WESTERGASFABRIEK Situated in the middle of the park, the 19th-century gasworks turned cultural complex has redefined the neighbourhood. When the factory shut down, the site was heavily polluted, making it difficult to find a new purpose for the area. After a major clean-up, the site was temporarily used for various creative and cultural activities in the 90s, after which adventurous entrepreneurs and artists flocked to the site. It soon became the meeting place of choice for creative Amsterdam. The site and the creative buzz around it ultimately led to the area becoming a permanently designated “cultural zone”. The former factory now hosts an exciting line-up of festivals, art exhibitions and monthly markets.

Mitchel Bovenlander Organizer Amsterdam Winter Paradise

Launched in 2007, 4PM Entertainment is mostly known for organizing festivals and music events around the city. They started with FRIS (meaning ‘fresh’), popular parties where 12 to 16-year olds can have a taste of nightlife - at reasonable hours, and of course, without alcohol. The FRIS parties became a phenomenon in The Netherlands. Founders Philippe Hes and Mitchel Bovenlander above all know how to party.

When Bovenlander noticed how many citizens of Amsterdam enjoy the ever Dutch habit of ‘een terrasje pakken’ (sitting on a terrace while drinking and people watching), he invented ‘Het Amsterdamse Terrassen Festival’ where hundreds of people come together to do exactly that: sit on a terrace. Famous bars in the city, like De Biertuin in East or Café Vrijdag on the Amsteldijk, were represented in the Rembrandtpark where they together formed a gigantic terrace. It started something in Bovenlander. He saw that there were more events

to be organized outside the music world. When he visited the Winter Wonderland in London’s Hyde Park, he knew what he would make happen in Amsterdam next: a giant christmas fair, like the one in London. ‘Het Amsterdamse Winterparadijs’ was born. Hosted in the RAI convention centre in South, Het Winterparadijs is nothing like the small christmas markets you have ever seen. There is a gigantic snow area, where it is possible to cross country ski, ice skate or ride a sleigh. Be careful though, because before you know it, you get hit by a snowball in the big snowball fight. From the ferris wheel you can look down at all the little shops that sell mulled wine or hot chocolate milk. There’s a daily kids show to entertain the younger ones. Bovenlander explains how he wants to keep an authentic and ‘gezellige’ (cosy) atmosphere in a place as big as the RAI. ‘It’s all about the decorations. Above the ice rink is a sky full of fairy lights and because of all the snow, there is no way you don’t get a Christmassy feeling around here’, he says. In the evening it will all turn more into a party with live music acts. Of course the perfect christmas feel in Amsterdam would have to include a walk along snowy canals, but riding a sleigh or throwing a snowball while drinking a mulled wine and listening to music, sounds like a close second.

Johnny Jordaanplein YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD IN A NUTSHELL

Rivierenbuurt is the perfect village in the city with lots of cosy cafés and restaurants. It is also not as busy as the close by De Pijp. The streets are wide and open, with lots of green, and I find that very beautiful. It’s also one of the only spots in the city where I can still park my car.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU IN THE CITY?

Everything in this city inspires me, because I know it so well. My best ideas are born by just walking around. When I saw people sitting on a terrace and drinking wine, I came up with the Terrassen Festival. When I saw kids skating on Museumplein, I thought ‘I want this atmosphere, but make it bigger.’

I love to eat out and really take my time. Brasserie Van Dam (Cornelis Schuytstraat 8-10) in South is such a place where you can just sit for hours after you’ve finished your food. The good parties happen at Chin Chin Club (Rozengracht 133) or Chicago Social Club (Leidseplein 12). But the perfect nights always end in Bubbels (Lange Leidsedwarsstraat 9092). It is so bad that it is good. You never plan to go there, but you always do.

'My best ideas are born by just walking around the city.' BEST PLACE TO RELAX

My friends own a small boat and I always find it most calming to go around the canals in it. You can stop somewhere to grab a bite to eat, or buy something to drink, and then you sail along.

FAVORITE PLACES TO EAT

I am a bit addicted to Asian cuisine, so Izakaya (Albert Cuypstraat 2-6) is one of my favorites. Apart from their Japanese food, I am very fond of their cocktails. I like to go to De Veranda (Amstelveenseweg 764) for lunch. It’s close to my office so it’s where most of my meetings take place as well. 146

Every year I see De Toppers live. It is a music group of four men who dress up in everything pink, sparkly and over the top. Their concerts in the Johan Cruijff ArenA (ArenA Boulevard 1) are legendary. All the visitors dress in the same theme, and that often involves loads of glitter.

It is very unique that Amsterdam is a metropole city, but feels like a village. I know a lot of people and feel right at home in whichever part of the city I am. That makes Amsterdam so special for me.

It is not a big tourist attraction, but Elandsgracht is a beautiful street. The little square at the beginning of it is called the Johnny Jordaanplein and owns the statues of some famous Amsterdam citizens. It doesn’t get much more Amsterdam than that. CURRENT PROJECTS YOU’RE WORKING ON OR FUTURE PROJECTS

I am always preparing for the next Kingsland Festival or Amsterdams Verbond. Next year we’ll host the tour of rapper Lil’ Kleine in Ziggo Dome (De Passage 100). And of course we will organize a new edition of Het Winterparadijs! HetAmsterdamse Winterparadijs can be visited from 21 til 30 December in RAI Amsterdam. A ticket that will take you on all the rides costs €17,50. For parents who only want to accompany their children, it is possible to only get an entrance pass for €5. For more information, visit www.hetamsterdamsewinterparadijs.nl.
