SPOTLIGHT

Canals of Amsterdam Amsterdam is the most watery city in the world. Its canals and harbours fill a full quarter of her surface. Its waterways have always been its essence and its source of wealth. The 17th century Canal Belt (Dutch: grachtengordel) was placed on UNESCO’s World Heritage list in 2011.

The Oldest Canals In The City

Amsterdam is the only ancient city in the world where the medieval center is not a museum but a Red Light District. Already in the Middle ages, drinking houses were established around the first harbours in the city. The first brothels here were opened in the 15th century, mainly in the Warmoesstraat and the alleys around it. But along the first canals in the area, rich merchants and regents established residence.

Herengracht (Gentlemen’s Canal)

The Herengracht is considered to be the most important canal in Amsterdam. In the 17th century, the richest merchants, the mayors and the most influential regents of the city resided on this canal. An adress on the Gentlemen’s canal is still considered to be prestigeous. The offical residence of the mayor of Amsterdam is on this canal at nr. 502

Keizersgracht (Emperor’s Canal)

The Keizersgracht is the middle one of the three main canals of the city. It was named after emperor Maximillian of Austria. The canal is 31 metres wide, which makes it the widest canal in the city center. Digging this canal started in the year 1612, simultaneously with the Gentlemen’s canal and Prince’s canal. Originally a wide boulevard without water was planned here, but the future residents wanted a canal in front of their houses, so they could reach their house by boat.

Prinsengracht (Prince’s Canal)

The Prinsengracht is the third and outermost of the three main canals of Amsterdam. Together these three canals form the “Fourth outlay” of the city, an extension project that was started in 1612 and completed 50 years later. It made the city four times as big as it was when the project was started. During the 17th century the population of the city grew from 50.000 to 200.000, which made Amsterdam the 3rd biggest city in the world, after London and Paris.

The city was founded around 1250 with the building of the Dam that gave it its name. ‘Aeme Stelle Redamme’ is Medieval Dutch for: ‘Dam in a Watery Area’. The first canals were dug for water management and defence. As the city expanded in the Middle Ages, successive defence moats ended up inside the walls and lost their function. But they acquired an important new one: local transport of merchandise. The Dam is still there as the heart of the city. But today this former barrier between the River Amstel and the “Southern Sea” is one of the few places in the center of town that you cannot sail a boat to. The last part of the river leading to the dam fell victim to land-traffic in 1922. The street that came in its place is still called ‘Damrak’, which is Dutch for: “Last section of the river, leading to the Dam.” Today, a subway line is being built in the old riverbed. HELLOAMS.COM

JEANNETTE VAN BENNEKUM (54)

Hairdresser and makeup artist at Shop No. 1 What is your favorite store? My own store is called Shop No. 1 (1e Leliedwarsstraat 1). It’s a former bakery and even though it is super small, I sell beauty products and I cut people’s hair there. What do you do on a rainy day? I live opposite the Rijksmuseum (Museumstraat 1) so I try to hop in every chance I get. It is very big and the expositions change every once in a while, so there is always something new to see. What’s your favorite bar? If you want to taste the best wine, you have to visit the newly opened Bar Parry (Eerste Looiersdwarsstraat 15) in The Jordaan. It is beautifully decorated as well. A treat for the eye and for the mind! What’s your favorite restaurant? The Rijksmuseum also has a wonderful restaurant: Rijks (Museumstraat 2). The food is delicious, but it is very expensive. If my budget doesn’t allow for that, I’ll go to Panini (Vijzelgracht 3) where I order the fish of the day every single time. How would you describe Amsterdam? Amsterdam is a warm and friendly city. We should take care of it so that it stays enjoyable for both tourists and inhabitants.

CHIARA ARBOUW (24)

Floormanager All The Luck In The World What is your favorite store? All The Luck In The World (Berenstraat 2h) of course! We have three stores in different parts of the city full of vintage items, accessories and the most beautiful jewellry. The design is clean and trendy. What’s your favorite bar?] Bar W (Spuistraat 175) on top of the W Hotel has the best view of the city. Especially in the evening, you can enjoy the beauty of Amsterdam on the roof with a cocktail in your hand. What’s your favorite restaurant? I go to Ku (Utrechtsestraat 114) for the sushi and to Franggo (Eerste Swelinckstraat 9h) for their Portugese chicken. In the middle of the Red Light District lies Dun Yong (Stormsteeg 9). It is a giant Chinese supermarket with multiple floors and at the top they have a little restaurant. It is the best Chinese food I’ve ever tasted. Where do you like to go on weekends? I love to go shopping but Kalverstraat is way too busy for me. The Nine Streets are perfect for exploring little shops and boutiques. If I want to go out, I cycle to Amsterdam West to attend a techno party in De School (Docter Jan van Breemenstraat 1). The old school building has been turned into a club and the parties are legendary. How would you describe Amsterdam? It is the city of freedom. I can be myself and it is a great place to develop and grow.

What’s your favorite store? I have to say Mendo (Berenstraat 11) now. I am very passionate about books. The photos in our books can all be found on the Internet, but I think buying a book is about the experience. You want to touch the pages while you read and feel the pictures when you look at them. What’s your favorite bar? For coffee I regularly go to Toki (Binnen Dommersstraat 15). It is next to my favorite cinema The Movies, so sometimes I spontaneously go see a movie as well. In the evenings I always hang out at pasta bar Spaghetteria ( Jan Hanzenstraat 32) in Amsterdam West, because most of my friends work there. What’s your favorite restaurant? Bar Gallizia ( Javastraat 67) serves amazing wine and their varying pasta dishes are always delicious. I live in Amsterdam West but I don’t mind cycling all the way to the East side to eat one of their spaghetti dishes! Where do you like to go on weekends? I usually work on weekends, but if I have free time I go to Cafe Pieter de Gruyter (Van Limburg Stirumstraat 4-6). It feels like my second living room, because I go there all the time to drink an espresso now that my coffee machine is broken. How would you describe Amsterdam? Amsterdam is a city that you have to experience. A lot of people only come here for a weekend, but that’s way too short! You should not be busy in Amsterdam and see too much in a day. Stay here for a week and you’ll experience the city.

PEOPLE IN THE STREET

VEERLE HAAN (19) Student

ELVIS OSAWE (22) Stylist What is your favorite store? It’s a bit outside of the city centre, but Daily Paper (Bilderdijkstraat 131) sells the coolest streetwear clothing. There is a hairdresser in the back of the store, if you need a haircut to match your new clothes. What’s your favorite bar? I prefer clubs over bars and I visit a lot of them on the weekends. My favorite is AIR (Amstelstraat 24) next to Rembrandtplein, but Club NYX (Reguliersdwarsstraat 42) is a close second. I always go to their hip-hop parties, such as Vunzige Deuntjes. What’s your favorite restaurant? I am a regular customer of Warung Spang Makandra (Boerhaaveplein 3) in East Amsterdam. Surinamese food is my favorite in the whole world and they serve the best roti in town. How would you describe Amsterdam? Amsterdam is a young and creative city. It attracts so many positive people.

What is your favorite store? Things I Like Things I Love has three stores, but I prefer the one on Ceintuurbaan 69. It’s a great location, in the middle of my favorite neighborhood De Pijp. They sell clothes and jewelry that are a bit different from what you would find at H&M or Zara. What do you like to do on a rainy day? Drinking coffee with friends is one of my daily activities. We normally go to Pluk (Reestraat 19) or Morgan & Mees (Tweede Hugo de Grootstraat 2-6). When I’m lazy I go to one of the bars on Egelantiersstraat, where I live. What’s your favorite bar? If I want to go out for drinks, I always end up at De Tulp (Marie Heinekenplein 33). The whole bar is covered in plants, so it feels like a jungle in there. After a few cocktails, I normally head to Kopstootbar (Marnixstraat 429). You can have a beer at the bar or dance in the back. There is always a great crowd. What’s your favorite restaurant? The sweet potato fries at Café de Paris (Rokin 81-83) are to die for! I order them every single time. For lunch I like to go to George (Leidsegracht 84) for Instagram-able but good food. How would you describe Amsterdam? It is a happy city. Everyone is always in a good mood.

JOENIS JANSEN (25) DJ BOAZ VAN TOL (20)

What is your favorite store? Patta (Zeedijk 67) sells unique streetwear clothing. I buy all my sweaters from there. Their shoes are great as well. What’s your favorite bar? Down a little street in the city center you’ll find Disco Dolly (Handboogstraat 11). For me it’s the only place where I have space to drink a beer and do some dancing afterwards. What’s your favorite restaurant? For students, Brasserie Nel (Amstelveld 12) is great. It’s close to the university and their food is affordable. The restaurant is located in an old church and has a big terrace, so it’s a good spot to sit and watch people walking by. Where do you go on weekends? After a week of going out, I like to treat my hungover self to breakfast in the Vondelpark. I lay on the grass and relax while eating with friends. How would you describe Amsterdam? This city is a great mix of old and new. I live in one of the oldest parts of the city but it is packed with new and trendy shops, bars and restaurants. That is the best mix you can ask for.

What is your favorite store? Baskéts (Elandsgracht 57) for sure! I bought my whole sneaker collection there. It’s my favorite shoe shop in town. What do you do on a rainy day? I really want to visit the Japan exhibition at the Tropenmuseum (Linnaeusstraat 2). My friend is a member of the exclusive club Soho House (Spuistraat 210) so I like to relax there as well. The place has a good vibe, almost like a living room in the middle of the city. What’s your favorite bar? Radio Radio (Pazzanistraat 3) is a new music cafe in the middle of the Westergasterrein, a vibrant place full of nice bars and restaurants in Westerpark. They change DJs every hour, so you know your favorite music will be played. What’s your favorite restaurant? The Vegan Junkfood Bar (Marie Heinekenplein 9) has two locations, but I prefer the one in De Pijp. Even though it’s vegan, none of the food is healthy. But it tastes so good! Their burgers are so delicious you can’t even tell they’re vegan. How would you describe Amsterdam? Even though I’ve only lived here for a month, I feel right at home. No one judges you here. I love that everyone speaks English: it makes Amsterdam feel like an international metropole.

DIANA VAN GORP (55)

Owner of vintage shop MooiZo What do you do on a rainy day? I recently discovered the Bijbels Museum (Herengracht 366). I have lived in Amsterdam for over 30 years and I only found out about its existence this year. The museum organizes small exhibitions and really takes you back in time. What’s your favorite bar? Right around the corner from my house is Festina Lente (Looiersgracht 40B). It’s a nice place to sit outside with a cocktail and watch all the busy people in Amsterdam walk by. What’s your favorite restaurant? I have been going to Lucca (Palmdwarsstraat 13) for years. It is owned by an Italian family and their pasta dishes are amazing. The prices are very reasonable as well. Where do you like to go on weekends? I visit the Noordermarkt every Saturday to buy my groceries. While I’m there, I sometimes stop for a quick coffee or lunch at one of the bars on the market. How would you describe Amsterdam? Even though it’s sometimes a bit too busy for my liking, I never get bored of my beautiful city.

EVA DUCA (37)

Owner of property company L’easeaway What do you like to do on a rainy day? I love to go to Cinecenter (Lijnbaansgracht 236), a small cinema just outside Leidseplein. They don’t show the big blockbusters, but I like to go there to see independent movies. What’s your favorite bar? Café Ruis (Van der Helstplein 9) is a small place, but they have a great terrace. It’s a busy spot, so you can sit outside and watch people all day. They also serve affordable but delicious food. What’s your favorite restaurant? I prefer to order in! Sushito ( Javastraat 74H) in East Amsterdam makes the best poke bowls in town. You can sit and order inside as well. How would you describe Amsterdam? It is my home. It feels like a big village. You might not know everyone, but it feels like you do.

JORIS LANDKROON (29) Owner of software company Cliendo What is your favorite store? I love the clothes from Weekday (Rokin 84) in the middle of Amsterdam. Their clothes are cool and trendy, but they are not expensive at all. What do you like to do on a rainy day? TonTon Club (Polonceaukade 27) is an arcade hall. You can play all your favorite games from the eighties and nineties, but the interior looks modern and they have a greet selection of beers. What’s your favorite bar? Café Thijssen (Brouwersgracht 107) is a no-nonsense place. It is cozy and there are always familiar people around to catch up with. What’s your favorite restaurant? The ferry behind Centraal Station will take you to the north side of Amsterdam. Within 15 minutes you will arrive at Pllek (T.T. Neveritaweg 59) in the old ship wharf. The food is amazing and just getting there is a nice experience. It is also where my girlfriend and I had our first date. Where do you like to go on weekends? In the Netherlands we have the vrijdagmiddagborrel, which means that after a long week of working you have a few beers with your colleagues on Friday afternoon. Sitting in a bar with a few bitterballen on the table is a great way to start the weekend.

ALLARD VAN HEEMSTRA (20) Student

What do you like to do on a rainy day? Go to the gym! I like to stay in shape, so exercising is always a good idea. My favorite gym is TrainMore (Singel 250). What’s your favorite bar? I prefer going out over having a drink. I always end up at Claire (Rembrandtplein 17), the best place to go out at the always-busy Rembrandtplein. It has two spaces where different DJ’s perform, so you can always dance to music you like. What’s your favorite restaurant? Even though it can be a bit pricey, I love Breda (Singel 210). The menu is always different and I love a surprise. Where do you like to go on weekends? Cruising along the canals in a small boat is my absolute favorite activity. You can rent private boats from different companies in the city centre, but I always ask one of my friends if I can borrow theirs. With the sun on your face and a drink in your hand, it’s the perfect way to explore the city. How would you describe Amsterdam? If you are open to the Amsterdam way of life, you can enjoy yourself to the fullest. Anything is possible.

o, you’re coming to Amsterdam and might only have 72 hours or less to explore the city. Good luck to you. Kidding, we are here to help you make your trip into an unforgettable experience! We created a list of 12 things to do in Amsterdam, so you don’t have to worry about missing out on the best places. From highlights and must sees, to upcoming areas and hidden gems. We got you covered. 1 . THE CANALS

Designed in the 16th and 17th century to house the growing number of immigrants flocking to the city, the canals today are still an important feature of Amsterdam, and one of the city’s main attractions. Built in concentric rings around the city centre, the canals offer hours of pleasurable wandering. Be sure to explore the small connecting alleys, which harbour some of the city’s finest cafés and shops. Beautiful in all seasons, this UNESCO World Heritage site has a special place in our hearts. Taking a canal cruise is a must-do during your visit in Amsterdam. Not only is it a great and relaxing way to get around, you will get to learn some interesting facts about the history of the city as well. 028

2 . HISTORICAL AMSTERDAM

Amsterdam has taken good care of its legacy of the past. Monumental buildings on the canals give you a sense of what life looked like in the high times of the Dutch Golden Age. Get a glimpse of the Dutch trader’s past in the harbour area. Experience the wealth of Amsterdam’s merchants at the Royal Palace on Dam Square. All this history around you gives Amsterdam its unique atmosphere.

3 . ART & CULTURE

Amsterdam is a dream come true for art lovers. Whether you are interested in contemporary photography or painters like Rembrandt and Vermeer, you can have your pick. The city is bursting with art galleries, presenting us with many interesting exhibitions. With some of the world’s most famous paintings like The Night Watch in the Rijksmuseum and an entire museum on Van Gogh, it is hard to rival the art Amsterdam has to offer. Apart from the wonderful art museums, the city also has a great number of other types of museums. Experience the life of a rich man in the 18th century at Museum Willet-Holthuysen. Be a scientist at Nemo Science Museum . Learn about the tragedies of WWII at the Anne Frank House or the Dutch Resistance Museum. Get to know all about the construction of the Amsterdam canals and its houses

at the Museum of the Canals. Visit Museum Our Lord in the Attic to see how Catholic mass was secretly celebrated in the attic of a merchant’s house, back in the days of the Protestant Republic in the Golden Age. Satisfy your inner fashionista at the Museum of Bags & Purses. It doesn’t matter what interest you have, Amsterdam has a museum for it.

4 . ARCHITECTURE

The diversity of architecture in Amsterdam is unrivalled. From the historical 17th-century houses on the canals, such as the Bartolotti House by Hendrick de Keyser, to the 19thcentury neoclassical beauty of the Royal Concert Hall and the superb Rijksmuseum by Pierre Cuypers, the city hits a homerun with the architectural styles of the past. But there is more. The beginning of the 20th century saw the rise of architects like Berlage and the famous Amsterdam School, known for their sober, yet complicated brick constructions and the use of decorative masonry (See Berlage’s Stock Exchange Building for a great example of this style). Modern times have brought us structures like Science Centre Nemo by Renzo Piano and the spectacular EYE Film Museum on the north shore of the river IJ. Fans of contemporary architecture will be happy to visit newly designed areas like IJburg or the Java Island.

5 . PARKS & CIT Y BEACHES

If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the vibrant city, Amsterdam can easily comply. There is always a nice park close by. The biggest star is the centrally located Vondelpark. When the weather is even remotely good, locals head to the park and

“Over 9 million people visit Vondelpark every year, but little do they know that Amsterdam actually has over 30 parks, including hidden gems like Park Frankendael, Flevopark and Rembrandtpark.” sit on the grass, or have a drink in one of the great cafés like the Blauwe Theehuis or Vondelpark3. If you feel that Vondelpark is too busy, other parks like the Sarphatipark in De Pijp and Westerpark in the west are great alternatives. The Westerpark is connected to the Westergasfabriekterrein, a recreational area that offers you restaurants, bars and a cinema. The recently renovated Oosterpark in the eastern part of town is also an excellent choice for a nice stroll. If you want to head into the woods, the many paths in the Amsterdam Forest will make you forget you are still in the city. Even though Amsterdam isn’t officially connected to beaches, the city can still offer you some nice stretches of sand. City beaches have emerged at various places, such as Pllek on the north shore of the IJ and Strandzuid in the south. If these places are too city-like for you, there is always the option to go to the real beaches of Bloemendaal/Zandvoort (also known as Amsterdam Beach), which are just a 30 minutes car drive away.

6. NIGHTLIFE

The capital prides itself on having excellent music venues and (movie) theatres. Former church Paradiso (Temple of Pop) offers performances of the greatest artists in the world, such as Adele and Coldplay. The Royal Concert Hall is known to be one of the best in the world. The exquisite Tuschinski theatre, built and decorated in Art Nouveau style, is one of the most beautiful cinemas in the world, making a night at the movies feel like a special night out. Amsterdam seems to be made of bars and cafés. It is easy to find one to your liking. Want to experience a typical Amsterdam evening? Visit one of the many ‘brown café’s’ in the Jordaan area. Want to try some of the locally brewed beers? A hipster beer bar is the place for you. Feeling like a posh cocktail with a hefty price tag? Go to one of the great hotel bars. Amsterdam is able to serve us all.

7. FESTIVALS ALL YEAR ROUND

Amsterdam organises many festivals during the year, celebrating music, food, art, and many other of life’s joys. You will be spoiled for choice. For dance fans, visiting one of the many dance festivals held all year round is a must. Where in the world better to be treated to the music of the world’s best DJs than in the homeland of dance music? During summer, one of the best music festivals to visit is the Grachtenfestival. During this classical music festival Amsterdam serves as a stage for Dutch musicians. Another highlight is Gay Pride, when Amsterdam transforms into the gay capital of the world. The entire city gathers around the canals to watch the parade of party boats sail by. Theatre fans can enjoy the circus vibe at the travelling open-air theatre festival the Parade, where great performers team up with quirky restaurants and bars.

Bucket List This list is a resume of why Amsterdam is such a great city. We hope you get to experience many of the wonderful things mentioned while you are here. If you happen to have some more time to kill, here are a few more ideas to add to your bucket list: Eat out of a wall: There is a food chain called Febo, where you can buy food that is kept behind little windows in a wall. You have to see it to believe it.

11 . SHOPPING

If you like food, visit Amsterdam in spring for the Rollende Keukens (Rolling Kitchens), Amsterdam’s major food-truck festival, and get a taste of all the many different types of food and drinks on offer. Another unique event is the Amsterdam Light Festival, held during the dark winter months. Designated areas in the city are transformed into spectacles of light. Seeing the city lit in such a special way makes your heart beat a little faster.

8. A L ARGE VILL AGE

Part of the attractiveness of Amsterdam lies in the size of the city. The distances in the city are easily manageable by foot or bike, making it feel more like a large village than a metropolis. This village vibe is attractive for both locals and visitors. You have all the perks of a city, but always feel like you know the neighbourhood and the people in it.

Amsterdam is slowly becoming a key player when it comes to fashion. Main shopping streets the Kalverstraat and the Leidsestraat are your go to when it comes to retailers like H&M, Zara and Topshop but there is much more to explore. The Negen Straatjes (9 Streets) district is known to be the go to for vintage finds and high end, yet affordable fashion pieces. There’s an abundance of good lunch and dinner spots, so there is lots to choose from if you’re feeling tired and hungry after a long shopping spree. The Utrechtsestraat has a similar shop, wine and dine vibe to the one at the 9 Streets. This street runs from Rembrandt Square up until Frederiks square, from where it’s walking distance to the De Pijp district. Boutique stores offering unique fashion and interior design have taken this neighborhood by storm. Looking for luxury brands? Shop until you drop at Amsterdam’s biggest shopping mall The Bijenkorf on Dam Square. From the Bijenkorf it’s a short walk to Gassan Diamonds for the city’s most exclusive jewelry and watches or head over to the P.C. Hooftstraat near Museumplein. Here you will find luxury stores from brands like Chanel, Prada, Tiffany & Co and Louis Vuitton.

Sail the canals. Either do it the lazy way by hopping on one of boats run by the boating companies, or be adventurous and go waterbiking yourself. Visit one of the few high structures in town to get a lovely view of the old city centre. The OBA (Public Library) on the Oosterdokskade is a good and free choice. Alternatively, the bars at Double Tree Hilton and Hotel Okura offer some spectacular views. Eat a raw, salted herring at one of the many fish stalls. Eat a ‘bitterbal’, a round, fried snack filled with a meat ragout.

9 . MARKETS

Amsterdam has many food markets around the city. It’s hard to beat strolling around a market on a Saturday morning, trying products such as cheese, herring and the infamous ‘patatje met’ (fries with mayonnaise). The most famous one is Albert Cuyp-market in de Pijp, but markets like the Ten Katemarkt in the west or the Dappermarkt in the east also offer great, often locally and organically produced products.

12 . GET AROUND TOWN

10. FOODIES PAR ADISE

If you’d rather use public transportation the city of Amsterdam offers a wide range of options. The public transportation network is extensive, including metro’s, trams, ferry’s, busses and trains. The 24-, 48- or 72-hour tickets can be used in all GVB transportation and will save you money compared to buying one-way tickets. Another way to enjoy the beauty is by taking a cruise through the canals past iconic bridges and 17th century houses. Take a hop-on-hop-off to visit highlights like Anne Frank House and Rijksmuseum or sit back and relax during a guided dinner tour.

From street food to Michelin dining, Amsterdam is packed with restaurants offering mouthwatering dishes. Although the Dutch love to eat at home and bring their own lunch to work, eating out has become more popular over the years. From brunch, to high-wines and fine dining. One of the most beloved local dishes is the ‘pannenkoek’, which is something between a French crepe and an American pancake. Toppings can vary from fruit and chocolate to cheese and lots of vegetables. 030

HELLOAMS.COM

What better way to get around in Amsterdam than by doing it the local way: by bike. Did you know Amsterdam has more bikes than citizens? It is said that the city counts over a whopping 880.000 bikes. You can rent one at MacBike for just a few hours or the entire trip if you’re up for it. Cycling is an experience on its own and a quick and easy way to explore. It gives you the opportunity to stop at unexpected highlights where and whenever you like.

Bike the city. Be careful, though, as traffic can be crazy. During winter, go ice skating on the Museum Square, with the Rijksmuseum and a replica of the famous ‘skinny bridge’ as your companions. If it is cold enough, you might be able to go ice skating on one of the canals! Have a glass of hot chocolate or mulled wine while you are at it. Spend the night on a house boat in the canals.

Henk-Jan Mulder CO-FOUNDER AND CO-OWNER OF KUNSTHUIS AMSTERDAM

“It all started with a passion for sharing art”

K

unsthuis Amsterdam is not just an art gallery. You can buy some impressive artworks but also loan them. With no cap on the maximum rental time, having a masterpiece in your own home is now within reach of many people. Henk-Jan Mulder, one of the two founding brothers of Kunsthuizen, is responsible for this fantastic initiative. "It all started with a passion for sharing art."

we had bought it. Bart and I liked sharing our passion. That is why we chose to continue to show our collection to other people. When a suitable location in Leiden became available, we opened our first gallery. Kunsthuis Leiden was born and quickly became a success. We were able to grow. One of the new locations was Kunsthuis Amsterdam."

Kunsthuizen has three different locations across the Netherlands. The meeting for this interview takes place in Kunsthuis Amsterdam, which resides in a former bank building in Amsterdam-South. In 2015, the Mulder-brothers acquired the space and turned it into an impressive exposition space of nearly 300 m2. They host a varied exhibition program and several events per year.

"We have always wondered why people feel a certain form of hesitation to step into a gallery. I know this feeling myself, too. Most times, this uneasiness is due to the atmosphere in those galleries. Maybe you sense a certain attitude that makes you feel unwelcome. Or you feel you know too little about art to start a conversation about an artwork. At the Kunsthuizen, we want people to come in, have a cup of coffee and enjoy their time here. Have a look at the artworks, chat about it with the people around you, even bring your children if you like. Art should be an enjoyable experience and available to as many as possible."

At the time of the interview, Henk-Jan Mulder is preparing for an upcoming show of Dutch couturier and artist Mart Visser. His love for art becomes evident immediately, as he is hanging the works himself. He is meticulously measuring the space between the artworks, making tiny adjustments to make it look perfect. Clearly a man with a passion and a hands-on mentality.

Could you describe how Kunsthuis Amsterdam came about? "Me and my brother Bart started out as art enthusiasts. Around our thirties, when we had a little more money to spend, we slowly became art collectors. At one point, we had more artworks than we could place in our houses. But that didn't stop us from buying even more art. It came to a point where we either had to stop or had to do something serious with our art collection." "People who saw our acquisitions were always interested to find out more about them. They wanted to know about the makers, or where

What makes Kunsthuis Amsterdam different than other galleries?

"We are welcoming to people with all kinds of budgets to spend, and we communicate our prices in an honest and open fashion. At Kunsthuizen, you can see the purchase amount of an artwork at first glance. This is still uncommon at most other galleries. Our vision is that an artwork should fit a person in terms of taste, but also in terms of money. Many clients are positively surprised by our transparency." "At the Kunsthuizen, we buy the works of our artists beforehand. Over the years, this has enabled us to gather a large collection for clients to choose from. You can buy these contemporary artworks, but you can also loan them. The system of art loaning is not new to the Netherlands, but the way we use it is different. Traditional art loan companies

have many works available, but they do not have the same level of quality as we do. My brother and I always felt that we should also make artworks by established or even famous artists accessible to starting art collectors on a tight budget. So we tweaked the art loan system to aim at a wider audience. Now, even a young art lover can step out the door with a Damien Hirst or a David Yarrow to bring home. That has always been our goal and a true joy to watch."

“At Kunsthuis Amsterdam, we want people to come in, have a cup of coffee, explore art from various artists and enjoy their time here.” How does the loan system work? "When you are interested in an artwork at one of the Kunsthuizen, you can decide to either buy or loan it. This could also be done online. You just click on the artwork of choice, and you will see the purchase amount or the monthly fee for loaning the artwork. You pay 1% of the total amount for the actual rental, and another 1% which counts as a savings deposit. That deposit will add up. You can use the savings to loan or buy another piece of art. At Kunsthuis Amsterdam you can always decide to buy the artwork you have on loan for the original purchase amount. So even if an artwork has dramatically increased in value throughout the time you have it in your house, you are still entitled to buy it for the original purchase amount. Your loan always turns into an investment."

Bojana Duovski FOUNDER AND OWNER OF CONCIERGE AMSTERDAM

“When a very demanding client compliments us, I know we’ve delivered something special”

F

or A-listers, corporate leaders and moguls visiting Amsterdam, there is only one person to call upon who knows and has seen it all. Meet Bojana Duovski, the founder and owner of Amsterdam's premier bespoke concierge service. How did this powerhouse start her business and what makes her tick?

“We try to get to know each client as much as possible and make sure that whatever we do for them is a truly tailored experience.” Path Duovski is a born and bred 'Amsterdammer'. "I've lived in the city my whole life. As a child, I was very observant, taking in my environment and always listening to what the people around me had to say. I was always the one in the background, organizing things and helping my friends out." Duovski, who is of Yugoslavian descent, wanted to study tourism but the war in former Yugoslavia was still going on at that time and there weren't enough resources to afford a college education. "I didn't want to be a burden on my parents, who were supporting our family during the war. I wanted to forge my own path, so signed myself up at a local recruitment agency, and that's how I landed my first job at an advertising company."

Leadership Duovski quickly climbed up the corporate ladder, and after twelve years she became the managing director. "During that time I was also selected to join a personal leadership program called 'Visie Nederland'. There I discovered that I had a true passion for helping people. I also realized that while I was good at my job, my heart wasn't in advertising. So I quit my job and started to look for 044

HELLOAMS.COM

something that I could pour my whole heart and soul into. Soon after, I met with a friend of mine who was really into trend watching. He was working on a concept for a concierge service and asked me to join him. That was in 2008, and at the time nobody was doing that in Amsterdam, so it immediately seemed like a great challenge to take on."

Wired While there are new and upscale restaurants and bars opening up in the city every month, Duovski’s has very high standards. "When a very demanding client compliments us, I know we’ve delivered something special. When we started out with the company, I was really annoyed that a lot of hospitality establishments didn't understand that they had to deliver an experience to their guests. Luckily, a lot of them have really improved. However, if you compare it to other European capitals, there is still such a long way to go. I sometimes feel like it has to do with the Dutch culture; we're not wired to be super hospitable. I think there's just so much to gain when they realize that they are contributing to a person’s special night out."

“I quit my job and started to look for something that I could pour my whole heart and soul into.” Matchmaking When Duovski meets a new client, he or she gets a full intake. "We run a very niche company, so everything we do is super personal. We try to get to know each client as much as possible and make sure that whatever we do for them is a truly tailored experience. This involves everything from the cars we select and the hotels we book, to connecting a client to a local business network or an interesting event. It's almost like a matchmaking service.

In addition to that, the logistical flow is very important and we make every step along the way hassle-free. Every little detail is taken care of, so our clients can make the most of their time in the city."

Guerrilla While Duovski can get a table at a fully booked restaurant or an after-hours shopping session at a designer boutique at a moment's notice, she's more challenged to make something that may look simple, special. "There was a man who wanted to propose to his girlfriend on the canals. He wanted to sail underneath the famous seven bridges at night and on each bridge, he wanted huge words made out of balloons spelling out her name and the big question. In theory, this may sound like an easy job, but it was a whole production. The weather was terrible that day and you're not allowed to hang anything on the bridges, so it was a guerrilla operation. We had two people on each bridge to make sure that the balloons wouldn't fly away or get removed by the city and we had to put spotlights on every bridge so she would be able to read the words spelt out with balloons. Altogether, it took twenty people to make it happen."

Spotlight Duovski works with a rotating team of forty freelancers. "I truly love to contribute to the life of others. I love to pamper and take care of my clients and to put a spotlight on the skills and talents of my team. That's what makes me tick. I'm not a person who's all about talk; I believe that you should practice what you preach. How you experience a city isn't just about a lavish hotel room or a fancy restaurant. In the end, it's all about how you are being treated and the hospitality you receive."

Ruben Brandenburg TAXI DRIVER AT STAXI

“You could say that my job has almost turned me into a tour guide”

T

here is nothing better than a driver who knows the city like the back of his hand. Taxi driver Ruben Brandenburg has literally been everywhere and beyond. You name it, he's seen it. So, who better to ask for must-see tips that tourists, and maybe even some locals, have to know about?

adjustment, however, was the language. "Before I started working as a driver I never spoke that much English, but now it's what I speak most of the time. That took some getting used to, but it's so much fun. Visitors want to know everything about what the city has to offer, so you could say that my job has almost turned me into a tour guide."

Strangers

Incredible view

Brandenburg grew up on the west side of the city in Amsterdam-Osdorp and was running his own company for years when he suddenly lost his business. "I had never planned to work in the taxi industry. A friend of mine was working as a driver, and when my company went under he suggested I try it out. I said: 'Why not, I'll do it for a month and see how it goes'. That was seven years ago and I never looked back. At first, it was a very weird experience to have strangers in my car. After I got used to that, everything was easy. I've lived here all my life so I know the city like the back of my hand, and if you're even a little bit of an 'Amsterdammer' you're able to make small talk with everyone you encounter, so chatting with the clients came naturally to me."

“Look up! Stop staring at that phone screen all day; walk around and take in the environment around you.” Tour guide

While the city centre is typically described as full of bikes and tourists, driving around town all day made Brandenburg experience the city in a completely different way. "Before I started doing this, I'd never noticed the mad dash that happens every morning when all the business people race to the Zuidas or the level of poverty that still exists in the city, that's visible when you see all the homeless people sleeping on the streets in the early hours of the morning. Most locals don't see those things." One major

What are Brandenburg's go-to tips for first-time visitors? "They usually ask me about the mustsees: Madam Tussaud's, the museums, the red light district, the coffee shops and, of course, the canal houses. But I always tell them that there is so much more to see here. Go up to the top floor of the A'DAM Tower and get on the automatic swing that has an incredible view over the whole city and the IJ lake. Also, look up! Stop staring at that phone screen all day, walk around and take in the environment around you. Oh, and instead of visiting the nine streets, head into the Jordaan neighborhood that is just a stone's throw away. And my favorite: The Nieuwendijk. It's the first street that was built; a lot of locals don't even know that. Just look up and above all the modern storefronts you'll see the oldest facades the city has to offer."

Magical

What's Brandenburg’s favorite area to drive around? "The canals, without a doubt. There is just something so magical about them. It will never get old to me. Also a good tip: if the weather allows, get on a boat and cruise through the canals. That way you can experience them in a completely different way, from a different point of view."

North side

While there are ample things to do, see and explore in the heart of the city, Brandenburg thinks visitors should definitely check out the north side of town. "Just hop on one of the ferries at the waterside behind the Central Station and within minutes you'll dock at the other side of the IJ river – plus, it's free! A must-do

is to take the ferry on the far right to explore the Hamerkanaal area. It's filled with cool, industrial restaurants that are located on the waterside. The area is so close to the city centre but when you're there it has a completely different vibe."

“Just hop on one of the ferries at the waterside behind the Central Station.” Across the country

While he loves driving around town, spending time and connecting with people is what ultimately makes Brandenburg's job so enjoyable for him. "A few years ago, there was a couple from the States visiting the city with their daughter. I drove them all around town and the next day they asked me if I could take them on a trip across the country to Giethoorn, a quaint little village that's famous for its old farmhouses built on little islands. We had a great time and I ended up spending three days with them and really got to know them. Days like that, when you really connect with people, make my job worthwhile."

Favorite clients

Even though Brandenburg enjoys his time chatting it up with people from all different walks of life, whether they be locals or visitors, there is one group of clients that has stolen his heart. "There is a drag bar on the Zeedijk called The Queen's Head. I regularly drive around the drag queens who perform there and those are always the most fun rides. They are my absolute favorite clients to have in the car. I think drag queens are the most amazing people. They are always up for a laugh and we always have a great time."

Mario Brandt OWNER GRAND CAFÉ RESTAURANT 1E KLAS

“People who visit us for the first time are always really surprised.”

W

alking through Amsterdam Central Station, you're surrounded by new technology, shiny storefronts and modern architecture. But there is one place in the train station that has a completely different feel to it and transports you back to the nineteenth century. For more than twenty years, Mario Brandt has been the owner of this historic gem. Let him welcome you to Restaurant 1e Klas.

Survived

Walking up the staircase at platform 2B, you can't help but think of that famous Harry Potter scene on the train platform where he is suddenly transported to a whole different world when he runs through a brick wall. In this case, it's not a wall but a staircase, and the walk up isn't nearly as dramatic but the effect is similar. When you're halfway up the stairs and look up at the brick and tiled hall, you feel like you're travelling a hundred years back in time. Brandt: "The station was designed by famed architect Pierre Cuypers in 1881, who also designed the Rijksmuseum. Throughout the years, the station has undergone massive changes and the restaurant with its impressive interior is the only structure within the building that has survived over time."

“I've always done things instinctively and have never been afraid to try something new.” Jordaan

Brandt is a born-and-bred Amsterdammer, and his family has lived here for generations. He grew up in the Jordaan neighbourhood and comes from a long line of entrepreneurs. "My father and grandfather both owned bars and cafés in the city. So hospitality is something that's always been around me. After high school, I started working at a 048

HELLOAMS.COM

lunchroom on Rembrandtplein but I always knew that I wanted to start something for myself. So after a few years, I bought my first cafe on the Prinsengracht. It was really small, but there was ample opportunity for me to do something great with it.

“I always look for projects where I can improve or add something, to make it better than it was before.” At the time, terraces weren't really a thing in that neighbourhood, so I decided to try it out. At one point we had more than one hundred seats outside. I've always done things instinctively and have never been afraid to try something new. After the terrace was a success, I decided to experiment with live music outside and that eventually turned into huge musical events on the street, where the whole canal would be closed off. You can't imagine that being allowed today, but back then anything was possible."

Overhauled

Years later, Brandt had sold his businesses and was contemplating what to do next, when he saw an ad in the paper for the restaurant. "I always look for projects where I can improve or add something, to make it better than it was before; that's what keeps me interested and motivated. That's the reason why I bought 1e Klas twenty-two years ago. At the time, it looked nothing like it does today. We completely renovated the space, brought in antique furniture, overhauled the menu, and made sure that every detail was just right." As he compliments one of the servers on the shirt he is wearing, that attention to detail becomes apparent. The waitstaff are all identically dressed in the same crisp, white shirts and matching long aprons.

Hidden

The name 1e Klas is derived from the eatery's former function: what is now a restaurant used to be a waiting room for first-class travellers. The soaring and painstakingly restored, hand-painted walls and ceilings hint at the building's past and the people it was designed for. When you look around the space, it's no wonder that it's a tourist magnet, at least for those who know about it, that is. "The locals have always known about this place, so to them it's nothing new. But most tourists have no idea it’s here. People who visit us for the first time are always really surprised. They think it's really special that such a 'hidden' historic spot still exists in such a modern station."

Elvis

But there is one thing that demands the visitors’ attention as soon as they spot it. On the left corner of the bar, high up on a large branch, sits Elvis, a cockatoo, who has been here for fifteen years and has become somewhat of a local celebrity. Overlooking the restaurant and its guests, he sits front and centre and has the best seat in the house. This is clearly his domain and you can see confirmation of that in the bathrooms of the restaurant. There you’ll find a creative homage to the cockatoo: the toilet bowls are painted in Delft Blue-style with Elvis as the shining star of the illustrations. The friendly white bird occasionally hops off the beam to take a little stroll on the bar. It's five o'clock and the restaurant is buzzing with people from all walks of life and nationalities. "The diversity of the guests who visit us is what I enjoy the most. We get locals, tourists, and Dutch people from other towns and cities. It's a mix of people that you don't see in most places in the city."

ecognized and respected as one of the most promising chefs in the Netherlands, this 34-year-old local hero has had an impressive career so far, and his star is still rising. An interview about cherishing your ingredients, striving for perfection, the power of teamwork and the art of balancing all aspects of life. Dennis begins: “Until the age of 12, I was allergic to all kinds of food and could hardly eat anything more adventurous than cheese sandwiches. Being a child of an Indonesian father from the Moluccan Islands, everything was about food in my family. I was surrounded with all these amazing smelling dishes when my Indonesian aunts were cooking, but I could never actually join the feast. Luckily, my allergies slowly started to disappear when puberty kicked in.”

Moshik Roth He started working for ‘rock star’-chef Moshik Roth at the famous avantgarde restaurant ‘T Brouwerskolkje in Overveen**. When the chef left the restaurant to start restaurant &Samhoud Places** (currently named &Moshik) in the heart of Amsterdam, Dennis moved with him. He went from sous chef to head chef, and in 2016 he became owner & chef of Restaurant Daalder, which was subtly restyled at the start of 2018.

Instant love affair “I wasn’t the most motivated kid in high school, so I started a very practical two-year course called Constructive Culinary Education at the age of 14. At the age of 16, I decided I really wanted to become a chef and started cooking school. I got an internship at a Belgian **-star restaurant ‘t Laurierblad under the supervision of chef Guy van Cauteren**. I was hooked immediately. The Michelin-star kitchen was disciplined and efficient like the military. It was like an army. Everyone was striving for perfection. I loved every second of it.”

Awards Dennis was awarded Young Talented Chef in 2015 – while working at &Samhoud Places, and Most Promising Chef 2018 – as chef-owner at Daalder. At the recent Amsterdam Food Bloggers Awards 2018, Restaurant Daalder was awarded Best Casual Fine Dining Restaurant and Dennis won the ‘One to Watch’ award for most trending and promising chef in Amsterdam.

Ambition Dennis’ ambition and work mentality did not go unnoticed, and soon he was awarded Best Dutch Chef student – the first of many awards. His professional career led him to work as sous chef at Ciel Blue** in Hotel Okura, Amsterdam. Eager to learn everything there was to learn, he did a traineeship at world-famous restaurant The Fat Duck*** (by visionary chef Heston Blumentahl).

“The Michelin-star kitchen was disciplined and efficient like the military. It was like an army. Everyone was striving for perfection. I loved every second of it.”

Onno Kokmeijer “You learn from every chef you work with, but Onno Kokmeijer (Ciel Blue**, Hotel Okura Amsterdam) showed me you have to do everything together as team. You have to use the energy and forces within your team wisely. Besides that, he’s one of the true masters of classical cooking techniques. It has been great to learn from a chef like Onno, a true mentor!” Inspiration is everywhere “Inspiration can be triggered by anything – and can come from every corner in the world. It can be from travelling, a movie, or even music. You can never be prepared for it. It just happens. But the most and best inspiration I get is from talking with my team; we really ignite each other’s creativity. I don’t often visit colleagues at their restaurants, as I just don’t have the time to do so. But as a chef, your brain is always buzzing and you’re constantly receiving inspiration. It’s just the way I work, and I cannot do it any other way.” HELLOAMS.COM

1999-2001 Constructive Culinary Education Zaandam Media attention Dennis continues, admitting: “There is a lot of media attention. I was a judge last year on the cooking show Chef’s Line on TV channel 24 kitchen. For me, that’s also part of being a chef these days. But I only do things I really like, and I want to do everything in the most perfect way. If I can’t ensure that, I’m not doing it.” Focus and balance “It’s all about keeping a healthy balance and staying focused. If you’re known as a great chef, it would be quite stupid to not use this status, right? The same goes for my family. I am a father of a son and a daughter, and I want to be there for them. I want to do everything well, especially being a father. Daalder is closed on Tuesday and Wednesday, so the whole team can have a balanced life, work and private time. You have to make sure that you are the driver of your own car, to ensure there is balance in your life.” Neo-Moluccan “I find it hard to define my – and Daalder’s – style of cooking. I have Indonesian roots from the Moluccan Islands, but I was raised by my Dutch mother. Never mind my background, at Daalder we are open for inspiring flavours from all over the world. We really cook what we want to cook. We don’t like to but a label on that, as it limits your creativity.” Dennis’ business partner Frans van Dam joins the conversation: “I always say our (Daalder’s) style of cooking is one with light, gas, fire and water. Please quote me on that one.” “I tell people I cook a NeoMoluccan style, which nobody understands. That makes sense because it does not exist,” Dennis says, laughing. Dennis continues: “The only way to create a great dish is to cherish the ingredients you choose. Let nature do her work. I prefer to work with two beautiful ingredients and bring their full beauty to the surface, rather than using six ingredients, and not use their full potential.” “How do I keep the right balance between supervising the kitchen and being a good host for the guests in the restaurant? It’s all about knowing your own manual. I taste all dishes every day before entering a shift – and keep a close eye during the afternoon or evening. In between – and after the peak moments of the shift – I talk to guests and I visit every table. Every guest at Daalder is 052

having dinner at my home; that’s how I see it.” “The defining moment in my career happened fairly recently, in November 2016. Frans and I became business partners; I became the executive chef and co-owner of Daalder. We really complement each other, so it was a great move. I have total freedom to do whatever I want and design my own creativity together with the team. It’s brilliant.”

“Daalder serves its guests the signature combination of **star level cuisine with a cosy, informal ambiance.” Michelin stars “We have had an inspector of the famous Michelin guide visiting our restaurant. That’s part of being a high-profile restaurant. The whole team tries to act like any other day and tries to amaze with the best dishes and hospitality. I think he left very happy. I don’t see why I wouldn’t like to be awarded with a Michelin star. Who doesn’t like winning? I see it as the ultimate recognition for the team, a reward for all their hard work, love and passion they put in the restaurant every day. And really, in the end it’s all about the team; without them we would be lost.” Favourite signature dish “Choosing a favourite signature dish is like choosing between your children; it’s impossible. I stand behind every single dish of every menu ever made at Daalder. If I’m not 100% sure, we’re not serving it.” “Why should people visit Daalder? Because we make sure every guest leaves the restaurant happy. Daalder serves and amazes its guests with its signature combination of **-star level cuisine with a cosy, informal ambiance. Our food is genuinely made with so much passion and love; I’m sure you taste this in every bite.”

Best Seafood Restaurants Where to find awesome seafood in Amsterdam

Among all the interminable talk about food trends such as ramen, doughnuts, poke bowls, and avocado everything, it’s easy to forget that Amsterdam is a port city, and for much of its culinary history a big part of its residents’ diet came from the canals and the nearby North Sea. Built as a harbour situated on the IJ river. And while Holland is perhaps most famous for its mussels (yes, those mussels you once had in Brussels most likely originated in the Netherlands), there are plenty of fish in the North Sea, and Amsterdam has so much more in its repertoire than merely mussels. If you’re looking for cod, sole, oysters or shrimp in a traditional or contemporary setting, the offerings are endless. That’s why we’ve navigated the wild waters of Amsterdam’s seafood scene to find you the city’s very best, from Michelin-starred must-visits to casual hidden gems, and we’ve included restaurants in a great variety of neighbourhoods. Of course, with pollution and the overfishing of the oceans and the related decimation of local populations of delicacies like eel and salmon, comes greater responsibility, which is why many of our selections include sustainable options like responsibly caught fish and by-catch.

THE VERY BEST RESTAURANTS AND BARS

AMSTERDAM OOST Amsterdam’s most of-the-moment cafes and restaurants create a compelling contrast with inexpensive immigrant eateries in one of the city’s fastest-gentrifying boroughs. The former working class area, east of the River Amstel, has become increasingly popular in recent years.

BAR BOTANIQUE Best known for its lush tropically-themed interior, which has been widely featured in (inter)national design magazines and blogs, and praised for its bold, original design, playful pink and green colour palette, and artful use of natural light, Bar Botanique is so much more than just a pretty face. Open from early to late, the kitchen creates quite a variety of tasty meals, from healthy chia bowls and truffled eggs for breakfast to farro salad and lemon-hummus & avo sandwiches for lunch, and comfort foods like pork cheek stew and hanger steak with roasted onion gravy for dinner. Looking for a good group option? At Bar Botanique Café Tropique you can book a special table with a group menu for 10-40 people at no extra cost. MAXWELL CAFÉ The cosiest bar in Amsterdam East was created with a singular goal in mind: to be a relaxed place where all kinds of people from the diverse neighbourhood can meet over a coffee, wine or beer (there are ten beers on tap as well as many craft beers from local breweries to choose from). With a large, sunny terrace on the Beukenplein, a small square at the heart of the borough, which is home to a diverse range of bars and restaurants, this is an excellent place to kick off your bar crawl, and grab a bite in-between, too. Try the lunch combo of a sandwich, bagel or wrap with a small soup and salad on the side or mussels with fries, satay or vegan coconut & sweet potato curry for dinner.

SMOKIN' BARRELS This American-style grill house serves seven seriously good burgers, four types of steak and other meaty options such as roast chicken, lamb rack or house-marinated spare ribs. There’s also a nifty “make it surf” option of adding tiger prawns to your meal, plus a number of hearty sides, salads and bites that pair particularly well with the craft beers, cocktails and gin and tonics on offer here. While we can tell you Smokin’ Barrels’ burgers are some of the best in the city, you don’t have to take our word for it, because the “Arie Gold Burger” recently placed second in the World Tastiest Burger Award. There are also two styles of spaghetti for the “bambinos” so, by all means, take the kids, but be aware that space is limited. Generally, the earlier you get here, the better! TIME FOR PETROLHEADS TAG HEUER AND ASTON MARTIN TEAM UP

The history of Swiss watch brand TAG Heuer reveals a close connection with the automotive world. The maison’s latest partnership is with Aston Martin and Aston Martin Racing. The illustrious British car maker is renowned for its roaring sports- and GT racecars; emotional machines just like TAG Heuer’s watch creations. Since its foundation in 1860 Heuer - Heuer only became TAG Heuer in 1985 when the company was sold to the TAG Group (TAG stands for Techniques d’Avant Garde) - the company specialized in timekeeping. Jack Heuer great grandson of founder Edouard Heuer and in charge of the company since 1962 - was very important for the development of the brand. He instigated the development and launch of the Calibre 11 movement and the famous Carrera chronograph is his brainchild. Jack Heuer was car and racing enthusiast and he played an important role in getting Steve McQueen to wear a Heuer Monaco in the famous film ‘Le Mans’.

JUST LIKE AN ASTON MARTIN

The connection with cars and motor racing now enters a new phase with TAG Heuer being chosen as Official Partner, Official 068

HELLOAMS.COM

Watch Partner and Official Connected Watch Partner of Aston Martin and Aston Martin Racing. A partnership means new watches. Two new watches. The Carrera Calibre Heuer 01 chronograph is inspired by the luxury that can be found inside the new DB11 Vantage, Aston Martin’s latest creation. The watch is powered by an automatic manufacture movement, visible through the skeletonized dial. The hexagonal pattern recalls the details on the new Vantage and is exclusive to this Carrera. The sturdy 45mm steel case was specifically developed for this edition with the shape of the lugs reminiscing the lines of Aston Martin's emblematic bodywork. The black ceramic tachymeter bezel can used to compute a speed based on travel time or measure distance based on speed.

RACING COLORS

The second model to come out of the partnership is the Formula 1 Aston Martin quartz chronograph inspired by Aston Martin Racing. The steel 43mm steel case features a notched steel bezel and a tachymeter scale. The indexes, seconds hand and Aston Martin's famous winged logo on the chronograph all don Aston Martin Racing's specific bright shade

of lime. The battery-powered movement is accurate to a tenth of a second. The addition of a leather strap is a first for a watch in the Formula 1 collection. The stand-out lime topstitching underlines the watch’s link with Aston Martin’s roaring race cars.

“THE CONNECTION WITH CARS AND MOTOR RACING NOW ENTERS A NEW PHASE WITH TAG HEUER BEING CHOSEN AS OFFICIAL PARTNER, OFFICIAL WATCH PARTNER AND OFFICIAL CONNECTED WATCH PARTNER OF ASTON MARTIN AND ASTON MARTIN RACING.” TAG HEUER AND THE SPIRIT OF RACING

The Heuer Watch Company was founded in 1860 by Edouard Heuer and in 1882 he patented his first chronograph. The Heuer watch company introduced its first wrist chronograph in 1914 and in 1916 Edouard Heuer's son, CharlesAuguste, introduced the ground-breaking Mikrograph, the first stopwatch accurate to 1/100 of a second. The 1933 Autavia was the first dashboard stopwatch for race cars. It marked the start of (TAG) Heuer’s long relationship with motorized sports.

The legendary petroleum blue dial with two white counters, the date window at 6 o’clock, the diamond-polished horizontal hour indices, the inscribed vintage Heuer logo and the Calibre 11 automatic chronograph: the Monaco Calibre 11 Gulf Special Edition is an authentic descendant of the famous square chronograph first introduced in 1969 and worn by Steve McQueen in the movie ‘Le Mans’. As a reminder of its origins and sporting pedigree, the light blue and orange stripes of Gulf’s renowned racing colors have been added to the dial. The Gulf logo also appears at 6 o’clock.

TAG HEUER CARRERA CALIBRE 16

The Carrera Panamericana was a borderto-border car race on open roads in Mexico. Running for five consecutive years from 1950 to 1954, it was considered the most dangerous race of any type in the world. During the five years of the Panamericana 27 people had died, and so it was banned. The dangerous race inspired Jack Heuer to name a chronograph he launched

TAG HEUER CARRERA CALIBRE 16

in 1963, Carrera. The Heuer Carrera Calibre 16 is a new, race-inspired chronograph with a striking ‘Reverse Panda’ dial and a perforated leather strap. The 41 mm steel case houses the Calibre 16 automatic in-house movement.

TAG HEUER CARRERA HEUER 02 GMT

This year the Carrera turns 55 but it hasn’t lost any of its racing roots and spirit. The racy 45mm Carrera Chronograph GMT is a modern variation on the classic Carrera theme. The watch is fitted with the in-house Heuer 02 automatic movement and its chronograph 3-69 configuration mimics the original Carrera. Its skeletonized dial is distinctly contemporary and so is the two-tone ceramic bezel in blue and black engraved with a 24-hour scale. This chrono is not just for racing, it’s a great travel companion thanks to its ability to keep track of a second time zone.

TAG HEUER CARRERA CALIBRE HEUER 01 RED BULL RACING SPECIAL EDITION The charismatic and colorful Carrera Calibre Heuer 01 Red Bull Racing Special Edition celebrates the partnership with the Red Bull Racing Formula 1 Team; indeed, flying

Dutchman Max Verstappen’s racing team. The high-tech chronograph comes in a 45 mm steel case and it features a skeletonized dial with midnight blue and red highlights, the Red Bull Racing Formula 1 Team’s colors. The automatic movement can be seen through the open-worked dial AND through the sapphire case back. A closer study of the Calibre Heuer-01 in-house automatic movement reveals the Red Bull Racing Team logo. This special edition is available with a steel bracelet or with a midnight blue leather strap with red stitching pictured here.

If you’re still clinging to the Old Centre and Canal Belt like every other tourist, you may be missing out on the real Amsterdam. Today many of the city’s best restaurants, trendiest bars and hippest shops can be found a stone’s throw east of Centrum in the neighbourhood known as Oost.

TROPENMUSEUM

JAAP EDEN BAAN

Recently, Amsterdam’s flourishing East has been compared to London’s Soho and New York’s Greenwich Village, which can make it hard to believe that most of this area was still countryside just over a century ago. The oldest part, the so-called Oosterparkbuurt, was constructed during the eastern city expansion in the late 19th Century. Today, Oost is made up of many distinct neighbourhoods with plenty to explore, from the historic “golden edge of East” along the Amstel river to the multiculti Dapperbuurt with its lively market and the hip and happening Indische buurt. But while Oost is an extremely in-demand place to live right now, things weren’t always so rosy. Post-war malaise hit the neighbourhood hard, and many of the original inhabitants who survived the war moved away to commuter towns to escape the economic decline. Fast forward a few decades and things look very different. Gentrification has long pushed out the artists and squatters, and large swathes of

HUIZE FR ANKENDAEL

Up until the early 17th century, watergraafsmeer was open water, from where enemy ships could attack the city. In 1628, it was therefore decided to reclaim the land here. The polder became a green oasis, where wealthy amsterdammers built their social housing have been country retreats. Huize frankendael is the last remaining manorial estate in the area. Inside, the 18th century style rooms have remained largely intact. Join the free tour at 12:00 on sundays. THE GUIDE

DISTRICTS

FRANKENDAEL

This thriving multi-cultural district is well-connected to the public transport network and a pleasure to explore on foot or by bike.

JAVASTRA AT Let’s begin our tour a short walk from nearby Muiderpoort station, on a street named after one of the Netherlands’ former colonies, the spice island Java. You’ll notice that while gentrification has certainly set in here, Javastraat retains a good balance between old and new, and it’s a compelling melting pot, where contemporary Dutch eateries sit next to Turkish grocers and Italian wine bars overlook Islamic butchers.

DAPPERMARKT Passing under the green 1930’s railway viaduct, follow the Eerste van der Swindenstraat until you reach Dapperstraat. Here, you’ll discover one of the city’s oldest and busiest outdoor street markets. With a reputation for bargains, you’ll find some 250 stalls selling everything from affordable fashion to fresh fruit, flowers and fish. The market was named for Olfert Dapper (1635-1689) a Dutch physician, writer and early champion of the multi-cultural society, who would’ve been proud to see his vision realized here, where Amsterdam’s 180 nationalities shop side-by-side six days a week.

OOSTERPARK A short walk away, there’s leafy Oosterpark, an antidote to all that hustle and bustle. The green heart of the district was the first large park laid out by the municipality of Amsterdam, who commissioned Dutch landscape architect Leonard Anthony Springer to design the park in the style of an English garden in 1891. To create the park, a centuriesold cemetery had to be relocated, which created quite the stir at the time. Today, the park is a quiet oasis, ideal for gentle autumn strolls along meandering paths, admiring duck ponds, heron nests and compelling sculptures like the National Slavery Monument. In the summer months, it plays host to a variety of cultural- and music festivals and is a popular picnic spot.

Alternatively, cut across Oosterpark to the Beukenweg, where you’ll find a cluster of restaurants, shops and bars that’s recently become a destination in its own right. It’s where neighbourhood residents go to avoid the city centre crowds and overpriced tourist traps. From a rotisserie chicken bar and a family pizza restaurant to a prize-winning burger joint, there’s something for everyone here.

Katrin Ley Launched in March 2017, Fashion for Good is a platform for innovation and collaboration aiming to come up with solutions that will change the fashion industry for the better and steer it away from the ‘take-make-waste’ pattern. The impact on the environment is definitely a cause for concern if we take into consideration the fact that we are not only purchasing 60% more clothing than we did fifteen years ago and wearing it half as long, but that within one year of manufacture 60% of it ends up in landfills.

The role of consumers, however, is also crucial and that is where the Fashion for Good Experience plays an important part. This interactive tech museum for sustainable fashion innovation just opened its doors on October 5th at the Fashion for Good headquarters at Rokin 102. Divided into three levels, the museum’s Fashion for Good Journey takes visitors from the past into the future of Good Fashion. At the start, they can pick up a sustainable bracelet equipped with RFID technology, giving them the opportunity to interact with the exhibit and create their own Good Fashion Action Plan. The past, situated on the lower level, looks back at the history of good fashion from the 1700s to the present while highlighting important milestones in labour rights, environmental sustainability

and innovation. Attention is given to the eight steps required for the production of a T-shirt, thus showing how a piece of clothing is actually made and shining light on the social and environmental issues in today’s clothing supply chain. On the ground floor, which is also the entrance to the museum, visitors can learn about the solutions that are currently available, design the world’s most sustainable T-shirt and shop at The Good Shop, a unique concept store featuring innovative collections from small and large brands centred around a theme that changes every three months. The first theme, Splash: Rethinking the Role of Water in Fashion, includes innovative pieces from adidas x Parley, Kings of Indigo, ECOALF, Insane in the Rain, Karün and Ms. Bay. Heading upstairs, the future is presented at the Innovation Lounge where more than fifty innovators demonstrate tangible examples of their solutions. Among these examples are a waistcoat by Mycotex, which develops garments made from mycelium (mushroom roots), and a dress created by recent partner Stella McCartney which is sustainably dyed by Colorifix.

nnovation is key when facing these monumental challenges, prompting Fashion for Good to bring innovators together with major corporate brands such as adidas, Zalando, C&A, and Galeries Lafayette, to name a few.

“The goal is to educate, empower and inspire visitors to take action and learn about the challenges, while getting some practical tips on how they can help create a movement towards good fashion,” says Fashion for Good’s Managing Director Katrin Ley, who has been living in Amsterdam since 2011.

Good Shop WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO BE A PART OF FASHION FOR GOOD?

Fashion for Good beautifully brings together everything I’ve previously done in my career. I was Managing Director for adidas, but also worked with start-ups in the field of impact investing. Fashion for Good is about the fashion industry and about innovators. This combination has connected the dots from my work life, but is also my passion. It’s an area that I personally love and that makes a difference in the world. Bringing our innovators to scale is hugely purposeful. FIRST IMPRESSION OF THE CITY

The flea markets and the metropolitan city combined with village flair had the biggest impression on me some 20 years ago, and it is what I still love today. Amsterdam is so multicultural and really celebrates diversity. YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD IN A NUTSHELL

Oud-West is the perfect village in the city with lots of cosy cafés and restaurants. It’s very green because it’s close to Vondelpark. There is a lot of newness and movement and great secondhand shops for kids and adults. I love the Ten Katemarkt and the idea of buying food from the people who produce it.

De Kas ADVICE FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT TO BE STYLISH AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Westerpark PERFECT NIGHT ON THE TOWN

A picnic in Vondelpark, especially if there’s something going on in the Openluchttheater (Open Air Theatre). It’s so close to where I live. BEST PLACE TO RELAX

The best way for me to relax is by doing sports outside. I do a lot of CrossFit and running in Vondelpark. I also like spending time at the beach in Castricum. NOT-TO-BE-MISSED EVENT

Amsterdam Light Festival (this year from November 29th to January 20th). It’s a magical experience that integrates beautiful pieces of art into the setting of Amsterdam’s canals and can be seen by foot, on a boat or by bike.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU IN THE CITY?

CITY WONDER

FAVOURITE PLACES TO EAT

TOURIST MUST-SEE

Cycling around, observing people and checking out new cafés, shops, events and initiatives. I love places that stand behind the farm-totable idea; Gartine (Taksteeg 7) is right next to our building. I also like Mediamatic ETEN on the IJ (Dijkspark 6a), De Kas (Kamerlingh Onneslaan 3) and Beulings (Beulingstraat 9), which feels like eating in someone’s living room and has a cosy atmosphere.

The cycling. I’ve always lived in cities where you needed a car and now I can cycle everywhere. Well, they must visit Fashion for Good! It should be at the top of their bucket list! (Laughs) What I always tell friends is to start with a boat tour or rent a boat and discover the city from the water. Another must-see is the Noordermarkt in the Jordaan and getting a piece of apple pie at Winkel 43 (Noordermarkt 43).

There are so many amazing second-hand shops here in Amsterdam. Just spend some time at them for inspiration. Shopping there is also good for the planet because you give clothing a second life. And it’s good for the wallet as it is more affordable. That’s a great starting point. Of course, you can visit our museum for inspiration, too. And you can go to the IJ-Hallen (Europe’s largest flea market, T.T. Neveritaweg 15) or to LENA Fashion Library (Westerstraat 174H) which is an interesting place to rent stylish clothing. Or organise a clothing swap! You can clean up your wardrobe and get fresh, stylish new pieces from your friends. It’s a lot of fun. CURRENT PROJECTS YOU’RE WORKING ON OR FUTURE PROJECTS

We are constantly bringing new innovators into our programme who will also be integrated into the museum, so the museum will be permanently updated with new innovation but also with new themes. We are currently working on the theme that will be launched in The Good Shop in January, and there is also a constant flow of events we’re putting together which people can attend, from talks to discussions and workshops. For example, founders or designers of the brands featured at the shop will come and talk about their inspiration or how they developed their collections. The Fashion for Good Experience (Rokin 102) is open seven days a week and can be visited free of charge. For more information, visit www.fashionforgood.com. HELLOAMS.COM
