Contemporary and Historical Relevance An icon makes a lasting impression, is a benchmark, serves both as an example and as a source of inspiration, and has great historical value too. Gassan’s David Bijlsma (DB) and Amsterdam Watch Company’s (AWCo) Roel van den Haak (RH) are veritable experts when it comes to watches. David knows whether a watch has contemporary relevance and Roel can pinpoint a watch’s place in history. The 13 watches these two gentlemen have closer look at deserve the honorary title 'iconic' because of their memorable contributions to the world of watches. David and Roel explain why exactly.

Rolex Daytona Chronograph Although this is not a Top 13, we start off with the most expensive wristwatch in the world, the Rolex Daytona. Paul Newman’s personal Daytona chronograph reference 6239 from 1968 was sold at an auction last year for a staggering $ 17.75 million. RH: “It’s a crazy number but I understand the ‘crazy’ price. It’s Paul Newman’s own Daytona and that means there’s just one. The watch has a great story to tell. Because of his passion for racing, the watch he received as a present from his wife Joanne shows the inscription ‘Drive Carefully Me’ on the back.” DB: “The auction record and the Newman connection shine on every individual Daytona chronograph from the past, the present and the future for that matter. The Daytona initially wasn’t a commercial success at all, but things have changed a lot. A steel Daytona for instance is in very high demand and therefore very hard to get your hands on.”

Omega Speedmaster

DB: “The story of the Speedmaster N is unsurpassed. When man landed on the moon surface for the very first time in 1969, astronaut 'Buzz' Aldrin wore an Omega Speedmaster over his spacesuit. What a story! I always feel that Omega could capitalize more on the fact that the Speedmaster was chosen by NASA to become their official chronograph. Every modern Speedmaster profits from the space legacy.” RH: “Think about this: the most expensive watch ever sold is a Rolex Daytona, but the first Speedmaster on the moon has never been put up for auction. I think if that watch was to be sold, it would be the most expensive watch on earth!”

Cartier Tank DB: “Louis Cartier designed the original Tank in 1917, the last year of World War I, after he became inspired by the French Renault tanks he’d seen on the Western Front. The Tank has been in the Cartier collection since 1919, and it has always been very recognizable. The tidy aesthetics, the never-before-seen integration bracelet, the Roman numerals, and the rectangular case shape were avant-garde then and still relevant today. The new steel Tank Américaine, for instance, is an instant and timeless classic.” RH: “The Cartier Tank is a watch icon in most of its many variations. But maybe the Tank is best described as an important style icon.”

Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso DB: “Invented back in 1931 to survive a rough polo match, the revolving case is a fascinating concept that also made it possible to create a second dial, to display a second time zone for instance.” RH: “What’s also interesting about the Reverso is the fact that it was conceived as a practical sports watch and it evolved into a classic watch. The rectangular shape makes it a perfect dress watch. That’s a surprising evolution. I think most serious watch collectors have a Reverso in their collection.”

Rolex Submariner

The Rolex Submariner is an intrepid adventurer, a well-groomed gentleman, and an elegant athlete. Rolex presented the first ‘Sub’ in 1953 as a robust instrument for professional divers. RH: “The ‘Sub’ is a toolwatch with the allure of a superstar. Throughout history, so many different variations have been made and they’re all evolutions of the previous model. Unlike the Daytona, the ‘Sub’ is not a very rare watch, but it sure has a lot of admirers worldwide.” DB: “The ‘Sub’ is like a Porsche 911; it’s the best in its class and it never ever looks out of place.”

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak When the Royal Oak debuted in 1972, the world was not ready for a relatively costly steel watch with an edgy octagonal bezel. DB: “The Royal Oak is perceived as the watch that defines the category of ultra-luxury sports watches. The classic ‘Jumbo’ designed by Gerald Genta is an undisputed milestone in watch history because it caused a revolution. Nowadays, the many versions in different materials are all equally loved.” RH: “When I first saw it, I didn’t like the octagonal shape. The thing with the Royal Oak is that once you put it on your wrist everything changes. It sits so perfectly on the wrist and the bracelet is so comfortable. A Royal Oak really oozes class.”

Panerai Luminor Marina DB: “The Panerai Luminor Marina marks the starting point of the era of the oversized watch and therefore deserves a place in this overview, but that’s not the only reason. Also, the so-called ‘sandwich dial’ which consists of two layers – a black dial with the numbers and indexes cut out, lies on top of a layer of luminous material – and the prominent crown protection with the lever secure the Luminor a spot in this list of 13.” RH: “Panerai has literally created something ‘big’. The brand has a fanbase called ‘Paneristi’ and that’s remarkable to say the least. The Luminor was first launched to the public in 1993. Before that, Panerai watches had been available only to military forces. That’s also part of the appeal.”

Blancpain Fifty Fathoms The history of the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms goes back to 1952 when French navy diver Captain Bob Maloubier was looking for a dive watch and ran into Jean-Jacques Fiechter, the CEO of Blancpain and an avid amateur diver. A year later, the encounter materialized in the first Fifty Fathoms. RH: “The name Fifty Fathoms is a reference to the British way of measuring depth in fathoms; fifty fathoms is about 90 meters. The Fifty Fathoms is less mainstream than the Rolex ‘Sub’ and it has a steady yet select following. There are lots of vintage versions to choose from.” DB: “The modern Fifty Fathoms is a beautifully made and finished luxury sports watch. Blancpain is a traditional manufacturer of haute horlogerie and it shows in the many Fifty Fathoms variations. The use of a sapphire bezel is highly original, and it looks fantastic.”

N IWC Big Pilot’s Watch In 2002, IWC launched its Große Fliegeruhr. Under its English name Big Pilot, the 46 mm watch has become a phenomenal success. DB: “The Big Pilot is an iconic IWC, no doubt about it. To be honest, I have to say that most of the pilot’s watches made by IWC are iconic. Maybe we should say that the IWC Pilot’s collection is an icon, not just the Big Pilot.” RH: “You’ve got a point there. In IWC’s history there are a lot of important pilot’s watches to be found. But still, the Big Pilot is something special. The design is derived from the so-called German Beobachtungs Uhren, air force observation watches from the 1940s that served as navigation instruments. Today’s no-frills Big Pilot is a strongly evolved B-Uhr. People never get tired of listening to the story behind the oversized crown that can be handled even when you’re wearing thick pilot’s gloves.”

Breitling Navitimer

RH: “I love early Navitimers. The size (much smaller than the contemporary case sizes), the shape of the bezel, and the way the dial looks. Back in the 1950s, computers were nowhere to be found in a cockpit – except on the wrist of the pilot who wore a Navitimer. The name of the watch is a contraction of ‘navigating’ and ‘timing’ and that is exactly what the slide-rule equipped chronograph can do in the hands of a trained pilot. Back in those days, pilots either wore a Rolex GMT or a Navitimer. The Navitimer is an important and essential toolwatch.” DB: “Not only the navigation function makes the watch a legend, but the large case, the narrow bezel and the design of the dial also contribute to that status. What I find fascinating is that despite the super busy dial, the Navitimer remains legible and doesn’t look busy at all.”

Chopard Happy Diamonds Nowadays, we know the many versions of the Chopard Happy Diamonds as an ultra-feminine luxury watch. But when the first Happy Diamonds watches were launched in 1976, Chopard also marketed them to men. DB: “I still remember my father Benno Leeser wearing a Happy Diamonds when it had just come out. He was so happy with it. Must have been the swirling diamonds, since diamonds are the foundation of Gassan. We even had a limited edition Happy Diamonds in our collection once with five special Gassan 121 diamonds.” RH: “Chopard also created the famous Mille Miglia collection but the Happy Diamonds creations stand out most because of the five freespinning diamonds between the two sapphire crystals. It’s just such an original and unrivaled concept!”

DB: “Breguet is the biggest name in watchmaking history. Abraham-Louis Breguet (1747 - 1823) was a genius who not only created the gravity-defying tourbillon, but was also a revolutionary when it came to the manufacturing of dials. And a Breguet, with its delicate, silver guilloche dial, is indebted to the original dials the master watchmaker made centuries ago. The geometric pattern of choice is very accurately applied to the dial. The pattern looks stunning and it also has a practical purpose; it is impossible for counterfeiters to copy.” RH: “What’s also interesting about a Breguet Classique is that no other watch looks like it. Many companies make classic dress watches with the same design code: small, flat, elegant, simple. But none of them make dress watches with a guilloche dial and blued Breguet hands like Breguet does. Breguet truly is the founder of the classic wristwatch.”

LOCALS COFFEE At one of De Pijp’s latest hotspots, you’ll find not only premium Buscaglione espresso-based coffees, perfect gin and tonics and quality wines, but also delicious food (think granola bowls, avo toast with smoked salmon and poached egg, burrata salads and simple pasta dishes), for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The owner remembers sitting in Coffeecompany with his girlfriend in 2009, and saying ‘One day, I also want to open something like this’. The result is a clean, monochromatic space with a statement golden bar, fresh flowers, artsy Annet Nederveld prints on the wall and a serene Scandi-chic vibe. With its cosy nooks and sunny terrace, it’s a great place to meet friends or linger with loved ones.

BOCA’S PARK Join the cool crowd at this Amsterdam Zuid gastro-bar, which has turned appetizer hour into an art form. CANNIBALE ROYALE Amsterdammers are fond of 'their' Cannibale Royale, a brasserie with a focus on unfussy dishes. Prompted by its enormous popularity, the concept restaurant in recent years has opened two new branches. We prefer the restaurant on Handboogstraat – one of the oldest streets in the city centre near Spui. Cannibale Royale says its goal is to awaken the "prehistoric" in every visitor: an unabashed need for large cuts of meat. Cannibale serves great portions with even better names: La Sympathique (200 grams), La Modeste (300 grams), L'Exceptionnel (600 grams), ... and l'Absurd (a steak of no less than one kilogram!). For the latter dish a reservation of at least 24 hours is required. Cannibale Royale also serves two delicious types of hamburgers. LOETJE Situated in a characteristic building near Cornelis Troostplein is a meat lover’s mecca with a sterling 40-year reputation. Named after its founder, Ludwig “Loetje” Klinkhamer, the steakhouse chain is “world-famous in Amsterdam” as the locals like to say, and the De Pijp outpost is ideally situated for leisurely lunches after a stroll down the historic Albert Cuyp market. The day menu includes hot and cold sandwiches, soups and salads, but you can also enjoy superb North Sea sole, hamburgers or chicken satay for lunch or dinner here. Hearty appetite? Do order the biefstuk Bali (Argentinian beef fillet steak, cooked perfectly medium-rare and served with a sambal-spiced sauce) with fries on the side and, if you can manage it, have the sticky toffee pudding for dessert.

THE AVOCADO SHOW “Europe’s first avocado bar” was already a hype before its March opening, with well over 44,000 Instagram followers at the time of going to press (holy guacamole!), so one wonders if it can ever live up to expectations. The neighbourhood now known as Noord (“Amsterdam North”) was once a wasteland where peat was extracted. In 1393, when the area officially became part of Amsterdam, it served as a toll station and gallows pit. But, by the latter half of the 19th century, Amsterdam’s heavy industry needed a home and found it here. Naturally, the labourers who worked in these ship-building yards and factories had to be housed, and therefore working class neighbourhoods sprouted up, along with pre-war woonscholen (“living schools”), aimed at reforming Amsterdam’s so-called “anti-social families”, and plenty of social housing for the city’s economically disadvantaged and immigrant classes. In recent years, as the shipyards have disappeared and the heavy industry moved further away from the city, the gap was enthusiastically filled in by the creative industry, forming Amsterdam’s latest creative hub. Industrial heritage fans will feast their eyes on all manner of converted

And where the creative industry goes, new restaurants, bars, boutique hotels and concept stores follow. The latest wave includes Chateau Amsterdam (Gedempt Hamerkanaal 139, chateau.amsterdam), which claims to be the Netherlands “first city winery”, organic pancake house Restaurant Stroop and adjacent beer garden Proost Amsterdam (Meteorenweg 272, restaurantstroop.nl), and urban boutique hotel Sir Adam in the A’DAM Toren (see Must-Visits). – FOR CULTURE-FOCUSED FUN & PARK LIFE The most popular ferry route takes you to the Overhoeks area, convenient for visiting the Tolhuistuin (1-minute walk, see Must-Visits), A’DAM Tower (3-minute walk, see sidebar) or the EYE Filmmuseum (4-minute walk, see sidebar). Weather permitting, a 5-minute cycle from the ferry slip gets you to Noorderpark (noorderpark.nl), a great place to picnic and a hub for cultural- and family activities. Here, two former gas stations are now brightly coloured community centres called the Gele Pomp and Roze Tanker, where activities run the gamut from yoga classes to kids’ hip-hop lessons. Named the “world’s most beautiful public pool complex” at the Piscine Global in 2016, the Noorderparkbad (Sneeuwbalweg 5) offers plenty of options to keep the whole family entertained in fair or foul weather. Before you head out, do stop off at Kaashandel Kef (Van der Pekplein 1b, abrahamkef.nl) for premium raw milk French cheese and wine, and then go straight to the Pekmarkt (pekmarkt. nl), Noord’s main street market on the Van der Pekstraat for bread, charcuterie, smoked fish and Surinamese or Indonesian specialities (open on Wed, Fri and Sat).

Departing from Azartplein on the KNSM-island (a 13-minute cycle from Centraal Station), this ferry puts you in a good place to begin a cycling adventure to rural Noord, perhaps stopping off at Museum Amsterdam Noord (see MustVisits). Historic dyke villages such as the former Zuider Zee harbour and fishing village of Durgerdam, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the outer-IJ, are a 1-hour cycle away, following the scenic Nieuwendammerdijk, Schellingwouderdijk and Durgerdammerdijk. On the way, stop off at local producer-focused supermarket Landmarkt (Schellingswouderdijk 339, landmarkt.nl) to stock your picnic basket. Instead of doubling back, go inland via Ransdorp and Zunderdorp, with their quaint wooden houses, charming churches and traditional stolp farmhouses (named after their characteristic cheese domeshaped roofs), past vast meadows with grazing livestock, and break for a picnic. We simply can’t think of a better way to spend a day.

Stephanie Litjes When Brabant-born Stephanie Litjens and her sister took their first city trip to New York, little did they know they’d find the inspiration there for a lifestyle concept that would change Amsterdam’s beauty scene for good. “We saw high-end spas with sky-high prices in intimidating buildings as well as countless corner nail bars where you could get a cheap mani or pedi with pro service,” Stephanie recalls.

And that’s when the sisters knew, “there had to be a different way”, with “premium American-style service accessible to a broader public, ‘cause everybody loves beauty treatments.” This resulted in the opening of Soap Treatment Store in Amsterdam in 2005. Now considered the Netherlands’ first “city spa”, it was very different from other beauty salons in the Netherlands at the time. Explains Stephanie, “About 95% of the beauty salons then had only one staff member (the owner) and we started off with a team of 15 people, which gave us a very clear positioning.” Now, 13 years later, the sisters employ 150 specialists, and have rolled out their concept to 5 other stores in 5 cities, as well as shop-in-shops at De Bijenkorf department store, with many of the locations also boasting in-store clinics called Doctors at Soap, where customers can get botox, fillers and peelings. They have also

launched a range of home treatments called Soap Recommends, available in-store. And, recently the sisters founded the SOAP Foundation, a charity that helps over 6,000 women in women’s shelters across the Netherlands to feel more beautiful. How does it work? “Everyone has a drawer or shelf in their bathroom with unopened beauty products that will never be used. We collect these products and donate them to these women in need,” Stephanie explains. Why? “Because we see so many happy people in our stores every day. Some come for a manicure every week, others pop in for a facial every 6 weeks. But, we know that our customers are among the lucky few. Not everyone can afford to buy beauty products or get a facial, and we want to help them.” Today, the typical Soap Treatment Store customer is an expat or tourist, with English spoken more often than Dutch in some stores. “But we love that!” says Stephanie. The secret of their success?

I’m originally from the south of the Netherlands and I’m happy to have my roots there, but Amsterdam is absolutely my home now. I find it to be a warm, inspiring city.
