Best Burger Restaurants Hamburgers are shifting from fast food to haute cuisine Never mind all those chefs menus and tasting plates, sometimes all you want to eat is a good burger. And while Amsterdam is home to a healthy number of burger bars these days, if you ask us, these 8 burger bars know just how to strike the right balance between bun, patty, salad and sauce.

INTERVIEW

What To Watch For ACCORDING TO DAVID BIJLSMA “I think Omega still has growth potential. Their portfolio is developing strongly, and they have some very interesting watches on the horizon. The same goes for Tudor. Their Heritage Black Bay is a hit and I think they will consolidate on that success. Jewellery-wise I keep a close eye on Bvlgari. It’s such a strong name and they offer highly recognisable creations. And for quality leather goods, I would point to Montblanc – great quality from a top brand with great value for money.”

INTERVIEW

Gassan in Amsterdam and abroad Diamond cutting has a long history in Amsterdam and this history comes alive in the huge Gassan diamond factory close to the Stopera. Gassan Diamonds was founded in October 1945 by diamond trader Samuel Gassan, the grandfather of the company’s current President, Benno Leeser. Gassan’s main office is situated in the historic building on Nieuwe Uilenburgerstraat. Here visitors are offered free tours, so they can learn all about the different shapes and cuts, see the actual diamonds being cut and – once inside the private rooms – see the really big stones up close and personal. Apart from diamonds, there’s a multitude of shops in the building that offer jewellery in every price range, as well as the biggest Rolex boutique of the Benelux. Gassan Dam Square is the main store in the city and on P. C. Hooftstraat you’ll find the Gassan Boutique and a Gassan-owned Jaeger-LeCoultre Boutique. Outside the city, Gassan is present at Schiphol Airport with several shops and brand boutiques and, even further away from Amsterdam, at Singapore Changi Airport.

thing. But pink gold is here to stay. Gone forever are 35mm watches for men. What you see is an evolution of watches and 35mm is just not big enough for the modern man. I think 38mm is the minimum size for a man. What’s interesting is that Rolex is very often on the forefront of starting new waves in watchmaking. That may sound odd since a modern Rolex Datejust closely resembles the original model from decades ago. Think of it as a Porsche 911. The modern car is bigger and better than the original but the soul of the car and the shape that defines it are pretty much the same. And that can also be said about Rolex, as their watch models slowly but steadily evolve. But at the same time Rolex is a frontrunner and very influential when it comes to the use of modern materials for movements and the use of colours. Remember that Daytona chronograph with a brown dial from a couple of years ago? After that watch was introduced, every watch maison followed.”

“Rolex is a frontrunner and very influential when it comes to the use of colours” It’s clear that the watch fire that was lit when David was in his early teens still burns strongly. “I was 15 years old when Gassan started to sell watches,” he remembers. “And since I was already into watches I asked to work in our company during the holidays. I was active in every single department and that taught me a lot. I learned about all the different facets of the

108

company – from diamonds and jewellery to logistics and warehousing. I also learned that the family company Gassan is more than the family that owns the company. I don’t want to sound cheesy, but I honestly believe that at Gassan we’re all family. And that shows. We all care about each other and we care about the business we do. That results in a collective ambition to reach the highest quality and service levels. But what really stands out is the warmth. People who come to one of our many shops quite often tell me that the atmosphere in our stores is warm, welcoming and relaxed and that our staff shows a sincere interest. That makes me feel very proud.” David is here to stay. “I worked my way through the company, spent time in other companies abroad and learned a lot, but Gassan is my home and I never really wanted to move to another company. Our next step is to completely revamp our iconic store on Dam Square. We will transform it completely and give it that unique and genuine Gassan atmosphere. For future visitors and myself, it will feel like home.”

Best Jordaan Restaurants

WHERE TO EAT IN AMSTERDAM’S COSIEST NEIGHBOURHOOD Whether you’re looking for something casual, romantic or exotic, you’re sure to find it in this impossibly picturesque part of town, where most streets and canals are named after flowers and trees.

S

ome say the origin of the neighbourhood’s mysterious name is a derivation of the French for a garden (“jardin”), which may explain all those botanical appellations like Leliegracht (“Lily Canal”), Rozengracht (“Rose Canal”) and Anjelierstraat (“Carnation Street”). What is certain is that the Jordaan was originally built in the 17th-century to house the servants of the moneyed merchants living in canal-side mansions. Today, this once working-class district is one of the most expensive areas in Amsterdam and a magnet for professionals, expats, and tourists. And while you’ll find many modern art galleries, hip speciality shops and high-end boutiques here these days, a wealth of hidden historic courtyards and the area’s characteristically narrow houses bear still witness to a past where Anne Frank hid from the

118

Whether Moroccan fare, traditional Dutch dishes or contemporary French cuisine takes your fancy, here are ten fantastic Jordaan restaurants to choose from. Nazis and Rembrandt spent the final impoverished years of his life. The Jordaan is still the centre of Amsterdam’s folklore and folk music scene, and it’s safe to say no other area in the city has as many different faces. That enduring diversity is perhaps best shown in the area’s rich offering of restaurants. Here are a few of our favourites from across the area, reflecting a wide range of prices, cuisines and atmospheres.

For a taste of the Northern Spanish kitchen in Amsterdam, head to La Oliva, where you’ll discover delicious pintxos artfully arranged on the bar. Pintxos started off as a convivial Basque bar bite but has developed into such a popular culinary concept that it has ousted tapas in much of Southern France and Northern Spain, and each generally topped toast or tartelette is a miniature masterpiece with the perfect bite. There are also some excellent a la carte dishes and Spanish wines on offer.

Join the cool crowd at this hip Jordaan gastro-bar, which has turned appetizer hour into an art form. Open from breakfast until late, you’ll find moreish mini sandwiches, six varieties of shareable appetizer platters and bar bites such as bruschetta with beef & foie gras, Parmesan fried chicken or feta & blackberry pizza. It is the perfect place to meet your friends or family for a drink, a chat and something yummy to eat. There’s also a southern satellite at Sarphatipark.

Situated in the centre of Jordaan, this casual and convivial bar is perhaps most famous for its Black Angus Burgers (200 g), but also serves kids’ burgers, veggie burgers, ribs and even vegan dishes. There are also lots of shareable platters with internationallyinspired foods: from summer rolls to tacos and Peking duck. The drinks menu includes a good selection of delicious cocktails (Caipirinha! Russian Mule! Horse Neck!), a wide variety of local beers and plenty of wines by the glass. Next to Tuin 10 you'll find Café de Tuin, a typical charming Amsterdam bar with an impressive range of local and Belgian beers on the menu.

THE GOOD COMPANION

LOCANDA

With a name that translates to “togetherness”, this Mediterranean restaurant prides itself on its convivial Dutch gezelligheid. Every day, the chef combs the local market for seasonal produce, which he combines with regional, organic or fair trade products and Mediterranean herbs and spices create his day-fresh specialities. Our advice? Order a nice bottle of wine and 3 to 4 dishes per person, so that your whole table is filled with fragrant food, and take the time to enjoy it all together!

Craving some fishy goodness of the deep fried kind? You’re in luck because located on Westerstraat, there’s a British-style fish and chips shop with a difference. Sure, you’ll find classic battered deep-fried cod with mushy peas here, as well as vegetarian “tofush and chips”, fish soup and “bycatch” croquettes, along with matching beers, ciders and G&Ts, plus Brit puds such as trifle and Eton mess, but what makes The Good Companion truly praise-worthy is its sustainable fish focus and, of course, all that delicious food.

Quality quality quality! Simple but exclusive Italian dishes prepared with great care and passion by the chef Bernardo Costantino. You will find homemade fresh pasta next to other traditional dishes all revisited in a contemporary manner. Gourmet experience with an affordable price! Unlike most Italian restaurants, Locanda has a modern yet cozy vibe - a true Italian experience.

This convivial wine bar has built up a loyal fanbase with its list of premium yet affordable Italian wines and high wine tastings hosted by diVino’s very own vinologist. There are appetizing bar bites too, from garlicky bruschetta and olives to antipasti platters with quality Italian charcuterie and cheese, as well as simple pasta. You’ll get plenty of personal attention from a warm and welcoming staff in a bright, inviting interior that’s decorated with fresh flowers and beautiful paintings.

You simply can’t visit Amsterdam without trying Indonesian food, a now near-native remnant of Old Dutch colonial rule in the former East Indies. For the real deal, head to this warmly decorated “eternal temple” on busy Rozengracht, where Indonesian staff dressed in traditional garb present authentic dishes, prepared by a Balinese chef using only old family recipes. Arrive with an appetite and order the rijsttafel (“rice table”) for a feast of flavours and aromas that will delight all your senses.

Located on the corner of handsome Herengracht and beautiful Brouwersgracht, inarguably some of Amsterdam’s most scenic canals, this unique spot offers an interior with a romantic early 20th-century Parisian ambience, a secluded bar with authentic Art Nouveau details and a lovely outdoor terrace with stunning water views. Add to that unfailingly excellent service and a menu of French and Italian classics, such as duck liver terrine, oxtail soup, homemade ravioli, ossobuco and chocolate profiteroles and you won’t wonder why De Belhamel is considered an Amsterdam landmark.

Recently named “Best Promising Chef 2018” by Gault & Millau, chef Dennis Huwaë delivers a Michelinquality 5 to 7-course tasting menu in a deliciously down-to-earth environment. Expect exquisitely presented plates that are also pleasing to the palate without the hushed reverence that often accompanies this kind of food. In fact, the folks at Daalder believe that fine dining deserves a “joyful, unpretentious atmosphere”. And, of course, Maitre Sommelier Tim Grashuis is expert at finding the perfect pairings for whatever’s on that pretty plate.

For finely-crafted fine dining, tongue-tingling wines and service that goes the extra mile, you really can’t go wrong at this reliable Medled restaurant, which has been situated on Noordermarkt for 25 years. Expect responsibly sourced regional produce, sustainable seafood, naturally raised meat (with plenty of game in season), as well as a superior wine and cheese selection. Tip: Bordewijk is closed for Christmas, but there’s a fantastic New Year’s menu (available from 27 to 30 December).

Chef-duo Karin Gaasterland and Alain Parry founded their quirky restaurant on Elandsgracht back in 1995, and have since made quite an impression on the Amsterdam culinary scene. The pair’s tasty three-course internationally-inspired menus always stand out for their creativity and flair. And, while many restaurants claim that “living room feeling”, here you really feel like you’re at a dinner party with your best friends. Just remember to make a reservation, because this tiny hole in the wall is consistently rammed.

DE OESTERBAR

LEIDSEPLEIN 10 • +31 20 623 29 88 • OESTERBAR.NL Unsurprisingly, this Leidseplein landmark, which was established in 1938, is well known for its perfectly plump oysters (its name means “oyster bar”, after all), and there are eight options to choose from. However, the shrimp croquettes with mustard mayonnaise and deepfried parsley are enduringly popular too. The North Sea sole, served with oven baked potatoes and salad, is particularly good here, and certainly worth the splurge, but there are plenty of budget friendly options as well (the spaghetti vongole, for instance). We also recommend the Plateau Royale, an etagiere packed with king crab, North Sea crab, oysters, prawns, scallops, mussels, cockles, pallourdes and various types of shrimp. Fittingly, considering the restaurant’s proximity to the Stadsschouwburg and DeLaMar theatres, there’s also a 3-course theatre menu (until 18:30). The waiters are friendly, attentive and always

136

happy to offer advice, the wine list is well-considered and the acoustics are excellent. Oesterbar’s décor is classic, with white table cloths, tiled tableaus of local landmarks and Dutch fishing ports, burgundy coloured banquettes, and an open kitchen. In a sea of new-fangled seafood concepts, this authentic mainstay continues to steer its own course. Just look out for the characteristic red and blue marquee between all the tourist traps. Tip: the restaurant is small, so do make a reservation. And, while you’re at it, ask for a table by the window (prime real estate for people watching on the adjacent square) or next to the large salt water aquarium with colourful tropical fish.

Villa del Arte Galleries, which also has branches in Barcelona and Palm Beach, is one of the best contemporary art galleries on Nieuwe Spiegelstraat. Are you a connoisseur of photography, painting or large-scale steel sculptures, then you should definitely visit this address. Villa del Arte represents, among others, photographers such as Jean-François Rauzier, the creator of ‘hyper-photography’, Willy Rojas from Barcelona, Atelier Lieverse from The Netherlands and Francoise Nielly, known for her expressive portraits with fluorescent oil paints. In short, Villa del Arte is well worth a visit. You will find friendly, knowledgeable staff, and international shipping is no problem.

Wanrooij Gallery is an international acclaimed art gallery in Amsterdam. It is more than a thoroughbred art gallery. Especially it is a dynamic and innovative environment where art boundaries are torn and dogmas are broken. A place that offers emerging and famous new media art artists a stage, and where a wide variety of art styles and shapes can be admired. Wanrooij Gallery is renowned for its innovative, challenging and inspiring art with character. In addition, the gallery distinguishes itself through constant renewal in- and outside the art world. Renewal in the broadest sense of the word. Because art is not limited by concepts and definitions. Or as Oscar Wilde once said, "to define is to limit." One thing is clear in the short term though: "A new art experience is just around the corner." Wanrooij Gallery will be moving from Stadhouderskade to KNSM-Laan 301 in December. Keep an eye out for its progress and current program on their website.

MODERN ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM Color & Joy in the Jordaan. The UK Guardian named Keren de Vreede best new-coming art gallery. Definitely worth a visit for the magnificent works. Gallery When visiting Amsterdam, go down Prinsengracht and visit Keren de Vreede’s art gallery. Her paintings are very beautiful and truly exceptional. Every painting is unique and impossible to replicate, even by Keren herself.
