Who are you and what is your role?
My name is Cathrine Nyquist and I am one of the founders of Panthera Africa, along with Lizaene Cornwall. I originally lived in Norway and had come to volunteer in SA for about 2 weeks back in 2014 and the experience was life-changing. After that, I returned to SA twice to volunteer before I decided to give up my career in real estate and immigrate to South Africa to be with the big cats. I fell in love with a little lion cub named Oliver and was torn apart when he was sent away to a breeding and trading farm with connections to canned hunting. Little Oliver started a deep fire inside me to start Panthera Africa to ensure the safety and rescue of Oliver, which further lead to the rescue of many other lions and animals that have been part of the un-ethical lion and big cat industry.
2
What is Panthera Africa?
Panthera Africa is a non-profit company. The name Panthera Africa was inspired by the passion Lizaene and I have for the four pantheras: panthera leo – the lion, panthera pardus – the leopard, panthera onca - the jaguar and panthera tigris – the tiger. It is an environmentally friendly sanctuary for any captive bred big cats, where they will be protected and prosper for the rest of their lives. We are a true sanctuary where no cub petting, breeding or trading takes place. The 40-hectare land is filled with lots of large trees, a natural spring and an amazing mountain view.
3
What does Panthera Africa do?
One of Panthera Africa’s main purposes is to be an educational platform where we can create awareness about conditions big cats face in captivity, and how animal welfare and enrichment play a vital role in giving them the best captive life possible. We are a blue print of how a non-profit sanctuary, focusing on animal welfare, can become self-sufficient. We aim to change all breeding facilities into sustainable ethical projects and to become the first “green” big cat sanctuary in South Africa running solely on solar energy!
4
Talk to us about R.E.S.C.U.E ?
We create a secure, safe and prosperous home for captive Big Cats and raise awareness about ethical and holistic animal treatment. This we do through connecting people with themselves through being with animals and nature. We strongly believe in the saying “In union there is strength” - and by standing together, human and animal, we believe in the possibility of a prosperous future for the big cats, and we take pride in ‘speaking’ on their behalf.
Reality: There are thousands of animals that need rescuing and there are only 7 true sanctions in South Africa. Apart from our sanctuary, every single one of them is full. Captive lions and other big cats are exploited daily. There are over 200 canned hunting farms and many cub-petting & breeding locations around South Africa.
R
Educational Visits: We strongly believe in the importance of educating people about animal welfare and conservation. We will also inform you about the wild population of big cats and the threats they face in the wild with regards to human-animal conflicts. Educate the next generation on how to preserve the wild animals and Mother Nature, and inspire them to become ambassadors for a sustainable future.
E
Save: Together with a wealth of international organisations and wildlife activists, Panthera Africa will be part of the solution and save these poor animals from zoos, circuses and being kept in private homes as ‘pets’. We have found that countries are now looking to only keep indigenous animals to their homeland and so many animals need to be re-homed – that is where we step in.
S
C
Change: To prompt change in society via motivational talks and educational programs.
U
Unique Volunteer Project: Become a team member and enjoy the day-to-day activities.
E
Enrichment Program & Team Building: We offer feeding, sensory and environmental enrichment programs.
5
Any new ventures coming your way?
We get calls monthly about new rescues and we do what we can. We had a rescue mission earlier on this year in February in which we were going to save a number of Big Cats from Argentina. We set up a fundraiser and the support from locals and internationals was incredible. We could build to re-home the animals and were truly so excited. Unfortunately, a few problems arose and it came down to only being able to save 1 of the group. We are so grateful to be welcoming this precious lion coming up in August! We are working on 2 more rescues this year, keep tuned in on our website and social media to find out!

COOL-RUNNINGS It’s the summer version of the thrilling winter sport. The perfect grassy slope opposite the Bellville Velodrome in Tyger Valley was selected as the most favourable location for Africa’s first summer toboggan track and Cool-Runnings has filled the gap for an affordable, adventure activity that’s great fun for the whole family. How it works: children eight and over can have their own bob-sled, while nippers under eight must sit in front of an adult (the sleds are made for two). Speed is regulated by a special braking system operated by a lever in front of the rider, so you determine how fast or slow you go.

After a few years of successfully operating Cape Town’s Free Walking Tours, the good people of Nielsen Tours recently created Cape Comoot. This is a shuttle based service, leaving Greenmarket square, in the heart of Cape Town, twice a day, to Cape Point & Franschhoek. A main concern when visiting the winelands is always the conflict between experiencing a wide range of wines and flavors and the need for a safe journey. Cape Comoot resolved that by offering a reliable service for the affordable price of R99 on-way. Being both, a South African culinary capital and a world known wine route, Franschhoek is a destination well deserved the visit. Spending a day in the area and making the most of it can be divided between the Wine Tram and a tasteful experience in one of the award winning restaurants. The Franschhoek Wine Tram hopon hop-off tour will allow you to explore an array of wine estates, taste sensational wines and have some pairing experiences that will allow you to layback for a while and absorb the visit to its fullest. A gourmet meal in one of the chef restaurant in town or at a surrounding wine estate is a treasurable memory to add to your day. Advanced booking is highly recommended and when doing so, please confirm if there is a specific dress-code to avoid any inconvenience. Cape Comoot booking must be done on-line at: http://capecomoot.com/ buy-tickets/ Leaving Greenmarket square 9:00 & 15:00 Leaving Franschhoek 11:00 & 18:30 If you wish to plan an overnight stay, a small bag can be curried.

what to see Rising up as a surreal backdrop to all of Cape Town is the extraordinary Table Mountain, and the state of the art Table Mountain Aerial Cableway will whisk you to the top in a picturesque 5-minute ride. Table Mountain is among the most popular attractions in the world, and it is no surprise that it holds the title as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. And while it’s impressive from pretty much anywhere in the City Bowl, it’s not until you soar to the top in an exhilarating ride on the cable car, with its rotating floor, that you can truly appreciate its stature, and the incredible city of Cape Town that bustles far below. Operating Hours: First car up 16 Sept to 30 Apr: 8:00 and 1 May to 15 Sept: 8:30. Last car down varies with sunset times but not before 17:00. Tel: 021 424 0015, www.tablemountain.net
There are few places in the Mother City as tranquil as Kirstenbosch Gardens, and at least once during your visit, when you stop to catch your breath and absorb the splendour of your surroundings, you’ll wonder how it’s possible that the bustling, buzzing city of Cape Town is just a stone’s throw away. These sprawling, landscaped gardens cover 36 hectares on the slopes of Table Mountain, and they blend in so effortlessly and majestically with the natural vegetation that you’d be forgiven for not realising their true scale. And when you consider how much there is to see and do in the gardens, from atmospheric sunset concerts and movie screenings, through to guided walks, popular restaurants, and an award-winning treetop walkway, it’s quite likely you’ll be planning your return visit before you’ve even left. The southern tip of the African continent is the meeting place of two mighty and bountiful oceans, the Indian and the Atlantic. The Two Oceans Aquarium is ideally positioned to showcase the incredible diversity of marine life found in these two oceans. The Aquarium holds over 3000 living sea animals, including sharks, fishes, turtles and penguins can be seen in this spectacular underwater nature reserve. The two ocean aquarium has established itself as a key player inraising environmental awareness through its high-quality exhibits, conservation and education programmes. Operating Hours: The Aquarium is open every day (365 days a year, including all public holidays) from 09:30 until 18:00. Tel: 021 418 3823. www.aquarium.co.za
There are few things as exhilarating as standing at the base of a beautiful, 150 year old lighthouse, perched precariously high above the swirling Atlantic Ocean, and knowing that you’re at the most southwestern tip of Africa. Knowing that the next closest landmass, when you look across the icy seas, is Antarctica – more than 4,000 kilometres away. The panoramic views that spread out before you are breath-taking. Literally, because you’ve just earned them with a final push up the final flight of stairs from the upper funicular station. And once you’re there, it’s impossible not to spend a few silent minutes taking in the gravity of the dramatic location, before you instinctively reach for your camera. This is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and offers hiking, surfing, angling, picnicking, beaching and cycling opportunities against the spectacular backdrop of the mountains and coastline of the most south western point in Africa. Cape Point offers visitors excellent viewing opportunities from the two lighthouses that adorn the point – one still functional, informative interpretive signage that traces the cultural and natural history of the Point. The lighthouse is accessible by foot or you can catch the Flying Dutchman funicular to the top. P.S. Baboons in the parking lot are not a rare picture as one might think.
Operating Hours: Winter: Apr – Sept: 07:00 - 17:00 Summer: Oct – March: 06:00 - 18:00 Visit capepoint.co.za for more.
After you have fallen in love with the penguins head to the secluded Boulders Beach and take a swim in the comparatively warm waters of the False Bay. This beach is ideal for kids as immense boulders shelter the cove from currents, wind and large waves - but please always take care. Also, don’t touch or feed the penguins. They might look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as sharp as razors and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping the odd finger or nose. Operating Hours: Winter: Apr – Sept: 08:00 - 17:00. Summer: Oct – Nov: 08:00 - 18:30, Dec – Jan: 07:00 - 19:30, Feb – March: 08:00 - 18:30 Tel: 021 786 2329. www.sanparks.org
There are few places in South Africa that bear the weight and sheer historical importance of Robben Island, and a trip to the former prison serves as a jarring reminder of country’s troubled political past. At the same time, it reveals itself as a powerful symbol for the triumph of the human spirit, and offers fascinating insight into the reconciliation and resilience that played such a key role in the development of a new South Africa. From the moment you arrive at the humble island, just a short ferry ride from the V&A Waterfront, you’ll feel the impact of this World Heritage Site. A former inmate will guide you while on the island, and you’ll receive unparalleled insight into the significant role that each of the Robben Island’s inmates collectively played throughout apartheid. Operating Hours: Ferries depart at 9:00, 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00, weather permitting, from Nelson Mandela Gateway, at the V&A Waterfront, Tel: 021 413 4220/1, www.robben-island.org.za

The Stellenbosch Wine Route is the first and the largest in South Africa and all the estates along the route are within a 12km radius of the town. It is arguably the country´s most famous, and includes more than 200 wine and grape producers within the boundaries of the Stellenbosch Wine of Origin classification. Halfway between the bright lights of Cape Town and the statuesque mountains of the Western Cape, lies the hidden valley of Wellington, full of surprises and variety, heart and soul. The Berg river flows along the western border with two smaller streams, the Spruit and Kromme and the mighty Hawequas stands guard on the eastern side. The Bainskloof Pass, built by the famous Scot, Andrew Geddes Bain was (before Du Toitskloof Pass) the only gateway to the north. More French people settled here than anywhere else in the Cape and the valley was initially called Val du Charron – valley of the wagon-makers, the last outpost before travellers, pioneers and adventurers attempted the arduous journey into thehinterland with their oxen and theirwagons. hello art Since its’ inception in late 2012, First Thursday’s Cape Town became a bench mark to artistic and cultural happenings in the heart of the city. Every first Thursday of the month, right after locals end their working day, the streets of the city center buzz with a second wave of energy. Galleries, creative spaces and designers outlets stay open till 21:00, usually launching new exhibitions or giving an opportunity to meet with artists and designers for an in-depth experience.
The latest addition is creating the self-guided programme prior to every monthly event. This will enable you to browse and download the latest highlights and get to all the latest exhibitions. The organizers mapped out a more focused programme, based on what they believe to be new exhibitions that are worth visiting. The objective of this is to encourage attendees to visit exhibitions that they might not have otherwise seen, and to facilitate more engagement with the cultural programme. What is important to note is that this is a choice. One may follow the programme strictly, or deviate from the map and discover other exhibitions and attractions along the way. This is there for those who wish to use it.
To our delight, well-known local restaurants joined the celebration by offering experiences that are unique to the day and adds flair to the evening. They are open till late and booking is very advisable if you happen to be in Cape Town for the occasion. This very limited time frame might seem frustrating to those of you that are not here for the day, yet one of the great outcomes of this initiative is the creation of a constant changeover in Cape Town galleries. It ensures that returning art lovers will always see fresh and current work.
www.first-thursdays.co.za includes both the self-guided map and the full highlights list of First Thursday’s.

l Hello Cape Town July 2017
south african design written by Genevieve Putter
What started as a collaboration on an innovative sculptural jewellery range more than 15 years ago, has become one of Cape Town’s most sought after jewellery collabs, Olive Green Cat. Founders Ida Elsje (Olivier) and Philippa Green have both established themselves as respected jewellers and accessory designers from their Church Street workshop and showroom. They also bring unique sets of skills to their collaborative brand, Nunc, making innovative and eye-catching resin, diamond, gold and silver jewellery, seen on the appendages of some of the city’s best dressed. Here they tell us more. NUNC
How did the concept Olive Green Cat come about and how does it work? Philippa: It was the surnames, slightly tweaked, of the original partners of Situ diamond jewellery, now called NUNC. We needed a name for our shop so this is what we came up with. How long have you been at the location and what’s the best part about being based there? Ida: We’ve been in the beautiful Holland House in Church Street for 5 years, but we’ve been in the inner city
for the past 15 years. We love how it has evolved into a creative hub with some of the best eateries in the country all within walking distance. You’ve collaborated on the Nunc brand, can you explain the concept? P: We set diamonds inside coloured resin so the diamond looks magically suspended inside the piece. One can see the diamond from all angles, it’s not covered by claws or a setting.... we wanted to make people realise they can have a diamond ring and it doesn’t have to be a occassion ring, like an engagement piece, but rather something they can wear as part of their fashion statement. How would you describe your respective styles? P: I make bold bespoke rings and cuffs. Most of my pieces are one of a kind as I’m always changing and developing on what I do, to keep it interesting and innovative!
Photographed by Tim Atkins IDA ELSJE
I: My speciality is in custom made engagement rings and other precious jewellery. My style is eclectic and I enjoy mixing vintage and modern aesthetics. Philippa’s work is edgy with her use of Perspex and our Nunc diamond collection is a perfect balance of our styles and expertise in very different materials. What are you busy with at the moment?
Photographs supplied by Ida Elsje PHILIPPA GREEN
P: I’ve just launched my Conservation Cuffs with Rhinosaverz, which are cuffs with animals engraved or sewn on that we are going to sell to raise money for different animal charities. I: We’re about to launch NUNC diamond jewellery’s new collection of African inspired bangles and rings where the big five animals in gold are suspended inside the resin with 5 diamonds. This collection has been on our drawing boards for a long time and we are very excited about launching it for Spring 2017.

Duiker Island: Cape Fur Seals Loving known as the ‘dogs of the sea’ for their sweet nature and playful frolicking, the Cape Fur Seals naturally occur on islands around SA and are found nowhere else in the world. Duiker island is home to over 6000 seals who love to sun themselves about on the rocks and audibly snort and grunt at one another, bobbing in the swell while keeping an eye out for fish to eat. They’re mostly brown, but shades vary from caramel to dark chocolate. The pups are born black and slowly grow lighter. These water-logged dogs are inquisitive and friendly when in the water, and will often ‘escort’ scuba divers and snorkelers – but a word of caution: on land they are far less relaxed and tend to panic when people come near them, so rather keep your distance. While the local fishermen may complain about the mischievous bunch, they are a pleasure to watch as they dance in in the water, jouncing along the boat and will often hold a flipper held high to give you

African Penguins of Boulders beach Boulders Beach near Simon’s Town is arguably one of the most beautiful spots in Cape Town – not simply for the venerable granite boulders, crashing crystal-blue waves and the silky white sands, but it’s tiny tuxedoed locals! The African penguins (fondly known as jackass penguins, because of the braying sounds they make) established their colony 1983 and remains the only place in the world where one can get up-close to African penguins. Boulders itself consists of 3 pristine beaches, 1 penguin viewing area and 3 boardwalks. The boardwalks are placed as a measure to allow for viewing of these marvellous birds, whilst keeping them safe from poking fingers and irresponsible behaviour of people, so please be sure to stay on the boardwalks at all times within the viewing area. Please take care not to touch or feed the penguins – they may look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as razor sharp and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping a finger or nose! You should be able to see the fancily dressed fellows throughout the year - but for a real treat, try to visit in January when the juvenile birds are moulting on the beach. Of course Beach space depends on the tides, so make sure to come at low tide and visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Note, there is limited parking, so arrive early during peak Summer months! Looking for a heart-pumping adrenalinespiking experience? Why not swim with the Atlantic’s most ferocious fish in the Great White Shark capital of the world Gansbaai? Walk, or rather, swim on the on the wild side with a life-changing experience you will most certainly never forget. Shark diving in can be divided into 2 main seasons: High season - May to October: this the best time to see Great White sharks as the visibility is good and shark activity escalates. Low season: January to March, however shark activity still continues and you have a good chance of spotting these majestic creatures. To avoid disappointment, we recommend that you call the company and ask about their current shark sighting and/or schedule a few days before. As a heads up, it’s a stunning boat ride out with the pros wherein 4/5 people jump in the cage at one time upon a sighting. Although the water temperature may shock you more than the shark, the adrenaline will warm you up quickly! Although nothing beats a genuine face-toface encounter with a Great White, there is also the option to either just tag along for the boat ride or see the phenomenal show from the upper deck of the boat – don’t forget those cameras! Chacma baboons of Cape Of Good Hope If you have taken a road trip along the coastal road, you will have bound to bump into a troop or two of some furry primates lolling about foraging, playing or fussing over one another - A human society in miniature, the Chacma baboons in the Cape Of Good Hope Park are truly interesting and uniquelot to observe. What makes this particular large collection of 6 troops unique is during the low tide they may be found roaming the beaches feeding on sand hoppers and shellfish - a very unusual behaviour for primates as their diet mainly consists of fruits, roots, bulbs, insects and scorpions. Watching this bunch can be very rewarding - but do so from a discreet distance. Please don’t get out of your car and leave it open,
especially if you have food inside. Keep your windows mostly up and even your doors locked as these quick and agile baboons have been known to jump into cars and steal food, bags and any loose items! The dominant males have especially large teeth and a dangerous (and painful) bite. Do not feed these animals because this leads to problem behaviour from these highly intelligent primates. These primates are also notorious for their destructive behaviour and if conditioned to receive food may have to be eliminated for public safety. The Chacma baboon troops on the Cape peninsula are the only protected population of the species in the world due to human activity and interaction. Here are some do’s and don’ts: • DO keep a safe distance from baboons • DO move away slowly if a baboon approaches you • DO takes pictures from the safety of your vehicle or a safe distance • DO NOT display food when baboons are visible • DO NOT tease or agitate the baboons • DO NOT open the windows or doors of your car when baboons are present • DO NOT feed baboons. You will be fined.

INVERDOORN GAME RESERVE
#MarineBig5
Inverdoorn is the largest private wildlife reserve in the area, providing sanctuary to an abundance of wildlife. The game reserve offers a premier safari experience including game drives, luxury accommodation and incredible insight into the rescue and rehabilitation of the cheetah. Inverdoorn is also home to the Big 5 - the elephant, lion, rhino, buffalo and the elusive leopard. The game is thriving and during your safari you may come across herds of eland, gemsbok and zebra, or hippos wallowing in the dam. The rhinos, with their horns intact, are a distinct highlight, combined with the magic of walking with giraffes and watching the cheetah run. This beautiful, big cat is the heart and soul of Inverdoorn. In 2001 Cape Cheetah was established, which seeks to rescue and rehabilitate cheetahs and, ultimately, release them into the wild.
You might be lucky to see the Marine Big 5 around the famous Dyer Island eco-system: Sharks, Dolphins, Whales, Seals and Penguins. A free visit to the African Penguin & Seabird Sanctuary is included.
