Louise Carver embarks on her ‘Take My Hand’ tour this April and brings her enchanting live performance to the family friendly Deep South Eatery in Glencairn, Cape Town on the 15th April 2022. Fit for Flying Despite all Covid restrictions coming and going, air travel is still happening. However, most people are more aware of possible health risks involved and deep vein thrombosis has become a global concern. So let your flight trip be safe by understanding a few key points of air travel, and developing some healthy habits. Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot that develops in a deep vein, commonly in the legs. It is a life-threatening condition because a piece of the clot can break off and travel to the lungs where it can cause a pulmonary embolism (a blockage of a main artery to the lung). The jury is still out there on the extent of whether long-haul flights raises your risk of DVTs. However several studies by the World Health Organization’s Research Into Global Hazards of Travel states that the risk of DVT may double after four hours of flying and in a cohort of healthy individuals, 1 in 6,000 people are affected, predominantly due to prolonged seated immobility. The risk is significantly raised when you have risk factors for DVT which can include being over the age of 40, having had
a DVT or blood clot in the lung before, having a history of blood clots in the family, hormonal effects of being pregnant or being on HRT or using oral contraceptives, recent surgery or trauma, and also many types of cancer.
In essence, clots develop if blood does not adequately move! The calf muscles have been termed the “Vein Heart” and are pivotal in ensuring blood flow in the deep veins – keep moving them... even intermittently is good enough!

Exercising not only alleviates your risk of developing a DVT, but it can also reduce aches and pains, relieve stress and boredom, and induce better quality sleep. Such aeroplane exercises include rotating the ankles, pushing down alternately with heels and toes, standing calf raises (go to a corner near the toilets or the galley to do these), alternately tensing and relaxing parts of the legs (working upwards from feet to thighs and hips then down again), various back, shoulder and neck stretches or even bringing a tennis or lacrosse ball on board with you to massage your leg muscles. Gently push the ball into your thigh and roll it up and down your leg. Alternatively, you can place the ball under your leg. Also do not get dehydrated as one’s blood will thicken and increase the risk of clotting consume adequate amounts of non-alcoholic beverages throughout the flight to prevent dehydration. Compression stockings or even wearing medical compression socks to ensure a compression of 15 to 30 mm Hg at the ankle will stimulate circulation and prevent blood from pooling and

TWO OCEANS MARATHON 2022
TWO OCEANS MARATHON 2022 CONFIRMED FOR EASTER WEEKEND, 16 AND 17 APRIL 2022 The Western Cape’s most pre-eminent road race, the globally iconic Two Oceans Ultra Marathon, is set to take place on 16 and 17 April 2022. This comes after a two-year hiatus necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic and the attendant restrictions under the Disaster Management Act. With a date for entries opening set to be announced soon, the TOM NPC is delighted to welcome back participants from over 25 African countries and an average of 89 other countries globally. The 56km Two Oceans Ultra Marathon, which takes runners along the spectacular panoramic vista that is Chapman’s Peak, is a jewel event in the Western Cape. It generates up to R672 million towards the local economy annually. “We are thrilled to be back on the road after more than 20 months. This has only been made possible by the ongoing support of our partners, Athletics South Africa, the Western Cape Government, the City of Cape Town and the broader running community,” says TOM NPC Chairperson William Swartbooi. TOM Race Director Debra Barnes adds, “The pandemic has affected all aspects of our lives and limited our participation in this much-loved sport. Navigating the challenges brought about by the 22 20 18 24

pandemic has forced us to look at things differently and respond in an acutely agile manner as we go along. We want to celebrate the strength of spirit of our runners, many of whom will have overcome some of life’s greatest challenges to be at the start line in April 2022”. Following extensive engagements with the local authorities and input from our celebrated Blue Number Club members, the veterans of the Race, the TOM organising committee will implement the following event changes. These decisions have been driven by health and runner safety concerns, as well as accessibility issues for the public who use the roads over the Easter weekend.
EXTENDED EVENT PERIOD For the first time, the event will be split over two days over the Easter Weekend. This was the only option in order not to curtail the number of runners that would potentially be allowed to participate, given the event safety guidelines. Consequently: The Two Oceans Half Marathon will take place on Saturday, 16 April 2022. The Two Oceans Ultra Marathon will take place on Sunday, 17 April 2022. the Cape Town International Convention Centre 2 (CTICC2) from 13 to 15 April 2022. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, all other events will not take place during the Two Oceans Marathon week. NO ROUTE CHANGE The Ultra Marathon will be run over the traditionall 56km route, with no planned changes, unless due to events or circumstances beyond our control; or the authorities deem the route or part thereof to be unsafe for the runners, surrounding communities and the natural environment. COVID-MITIGATING MEASURES Runners will have to comply with stringent screening measures prior to the race. On the advice of the TOM medical team, runners will have to upload proof of vaccination, and/or present proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken not more than 48 hours prior to the race. Failure to do so will result in runners forfeiting their entry. Runners will be able to have antigen tests done at the TOM Expo, should they be unable to provide proof of the above. This will be at runner’s cost. All staff, officials, and event service providers and their staff will be required to present proof of vaccination, or a negative test result 48 hours prior to being on site. Unfortunately, no spectators will be allowed at the start, along the route or at the finish areas.
All TOM 2022 event venues will be access controlled. Only holders of the official TOM 2022 accreditation and which is clearly displayed, will be allowed entry. START LINE AND FINISH AREA COVID-19 PROTOCOLS Strict Covid-19 protocols will be enforced at the start line and at the finish area. Multiple mat-tomat batch starts will be deployed at intervals apart. Runners will be required to wear a mask at all times, including at the start line and finish area, and social distancing of 1,5 metres will be strictly enforced

HISTORY
The Two Oceans Marathon is the Africa’s biggest running event by economic impact, contributing R672 million annually to the Western Cape economy. It has earned a reputation as the world’s most beautiful marathon. The first race was held in 1970 and saw 26 runners line up to face the unknown challenge. Since then, the race has become a national institution and a firm favourite with local, upcountry, and international athletes. Participants consistently vote it as one of the best in South Africa and it continues to attract strong fields and an increasing number of international entrants. The event has become synonymous with the Easter Weekend in Cape Town, with the pre-race activities at the expo, family day, and fun runs on Easter Friday. En-route entertainment on the race day provides fun, excitement, and a unique experience to runners, family, friends, and spectators alike.

EAGLES’ NEST WINES Eagles’ Nest was originally a section of Groot Constantia, the wine supplier to European nobility, established by Simon van der Stel in the late 1600’s. Eagles’ Nest’s history reveals that it operated as a commercial farm producing export fruit, as well as vegetables for the local market, up until the 1960’s. Over time the farm has had a number of owners, since 1984 it has been in the control of the Mylrea family. Eagles’ Nest is suited to red wines. With its East, West and North facing slopes it is the steepest commercially farmed land in the Cape region, if not in all of South Africa. The land is located 10.5 km from the warm False Bay coast line and is in the direct path of the summer trade wines
