both the ballet company and the training programme gained a reputation for ensuring that opportunity for training and employment was open to all, despite the ruling laws of the time. he Company has in the past been the home of dancers such as Mzonke Jama, Kevin Muller, Sharon Paulsen, Christopher Kindo, Laveen Naidoo, Jack Wyngaard, Llewellyn de Villiers and Desiree Samaai, many of whom have made names for themselves in dance internationally, as well as in South Africa. The CTCB has a long-standing practice of developing South African choreographic talent. In 2019, the Choreolab programme
was established as a platform to incubate, nurture and invest in aspiring South African choreographers from within the Company. The choreographer is supported in creating and staging a work, while developing their choreographic skills by working with a mentor. Three dancers took part in the 2019 initiative. With the onset of Covid-19 and accompanying restrictions, the Choreolab programme was adapted for 2020. Nine dancers each created a dance piece for a short dance film in collaboration with Norval Foundation and inspired by and celebrating the work of William Kentridge from his Why Should I Hesitate: Sculpture exhibition.

Even hardened Capetonians jump in surprise from time to time when the boom echoes through the city, depending on the wind direction. People flock here every day for the firing of the Noon Gun, one of Cape Town’s oldest traditions. Public access to the area has been allowed since 1998, when the guns were moved to their present position for safety reasons. The gun was fired for the first time in 1806. It was used as a signal (hence Signal Hill) to ships in Table Bay. These are the oldest guns in daily use in the world. The noon gun has been one constant in Cape Town’s colourful and ever-changing history, with the tradition surviving colonial occupations, wars and apartheid. 14

Keeping with the stokvel theme, South African National Parks has launched an exciting new product for Stokvels & Travel Clubs. This service offers special payment terms and discounted rates at selected National Parks on particular dates throughout the year and across the country. Managing Executive: Tourism Development and Marketing, Hapiloe Sello, said, “Stokvel & Travel Club member-ship boasts many different types of personalities and profiles, ranging from the ordinary grandmother to the high earning CEO’s of companies and large corporate and public sector institutions.
There are over 800 000 registered Stokvels and even more formal and informal travel clubs/ groups in South Africa. Travel clubs that qualify include groups of people who have special interests such as hiking or biking but also just groups of friends and large families that enjoy group travel.” To qualify for the favourable payment terms, Stokvels and travel clubs have to register through the travel trade team in the Reservations department. Once registered with SANParks, the group will receive a client code that can be used whenever a booking is made. The client code will automatically qualify the group for favourable payment terms and special discounts. Sello says, “unlike the traditional group travel that allows a group of individuals travelling together, our new Stokvel & Travel Club product allows a group of ten or more people to contribute money towards a combined visit to our parks on a future date of their choice.”

itself an awe inspiring site with catch fences and structures consisting of a half tunnel and canopy. Work started on the road in 1915 with the use of convict labour and took 7 years to complete at a cost of ₤20 000. Over the year’s erosion and weather conditions caused major rock falls and the road was closed numerous times. After intensive design and reconstruction in its current state Chapman’s Peak Drive was reopened
to traffic as a toll road on 20 December 2003. The opening was a welcome return for the drive as an “international tourist destination” complementing other tourist destinations in the Western Cape. Chapman’s Peak Drive does however have temporary closures for routine maintenance and during dangerous weather conditions. The 100 year anniversary celebration will culminate with a series of events centred around Chapman’s Peak Drive between the 6th to 8th May 2022. In order to celebrate connecting communities, two marketplaces will open to the public in both Noordhoek and Hout Bay, on either side of Chapman’s Peak Drive. The marketplaces will feature food and beverage stands, live music and fun and games for the kids. Special inter-market events will
The many ways of exploring Chapman’s Peak Drive This magnificent wonder of nature continues to delight locals and tourists. Popular for picnics and scenic drives, you can also experience its beauty on foot or by bicycle taking in the awe-inspiring views and winding along its spectacular curves. Some are lucky enough to travel on a Harley Davidson, a vintage sidecar, a trike or a classic Cobra. And when you get to the other side, there’s more to explore. The landscape and the lifestyle has inspired artisans of all disciplines to explore their craft and follow their passion in the surrounding towns and villages. Enjoy the riches of their honed skills from chefs and producers to artists and entrepreneurs.
be held including Harley Davidson parades and rides, vintage car rallies across Chappies and cycling relays. The celebrations will also include a Chapman’s Peak Drive frame as the centerpiece for photographic competitions with daily giveaways. The public are invited from across the city, province and country to visit the Chappies frame located midway along the drive, take a photo, post to Chapman’s Peak Drive social media and stand the chance to win some incredible daily prizes. Follow social media or check the website for updates and more info. Having the accolade as one of the most scenic drives shared and/or awarded over the years by the likes of Conde Naste Traveller, Travel & Leisure, BBC Travel and News 24 to name a few, it goes without saying that experiencing the drive in its entirety is far more than just driving the 9km route with 114 curves as the road winds its way on the southerly extension of the Constantiaberg Mountain on the Cape
Peninsula, forming part of the Table Mountain range. The working relationship to manage the drive from an environmental conservation perspective spans across sectors, from operations of the toll plaza and the maintenance of picnic sites and the road overall, to engineering continued with maintenance for rock catchment mitigation as an example and conservation of the natural heritage in alignment with SANParks, as Chapman’s Peak Drive runs through Table Mountain National Park being of utmost importance. Experiencing all that is Chapman’s Peak Drive spans all these whether you have an interest in engineering, history, geology, nature, leisure and adventure there is something for everyone to enjoy and is the perfect location whether you’re alone, a couple, a family, some friends or with whoever you choose to explore the space. You would want to come back more and more and if you use Chapmans Peak Drive frequently there are benefits by signing up to be a frequent user. Hello Cape Town January 2022 l
