GERTRUDE STEIN AND A COMPANION 1 – 5 February, 2022

CHESTER MISSING & CONRAD KOCH’S RAMAPUPPET

SHIRLEY VALENTINE

14 February – 5 March, 2022

8 – 12 February, 2022

An evocative and witty play that explores the extraordinary relationship between lifelong partners Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas who rejected the conservative values of middle class America in the early nineteen hundreds and found refuge in the bohemian decadence of Paris... and in each other.

This is Conrad’s most local-is-lekker show to date. Starring Hilton, the ostrich who givesrelationship advice, Mr Dixon, school teacher of 43 years, Ronnie the rock ‘n roll internet troll, and of course his celebrity mate Chester Missing, roasting everything from awkward Covid-19 protocols to laser hair removal.

Shirley Valentine is an award-winning British one-woman play by Willy Russell. Shirley, a bored, middle-aged housewife, is trapped in a stale, loveless marriage. Her children are all grown up and she frequently talks to the wall in her kitchen while preparing her husband’s regular evening meal of egg and chips.

This award-winning production was first performed at the Alexander Bar in Cape Town in 2018 and was nominated for a Fleur du Cap Theatre award for Best Ensemble Performance. In 2019 the production was invited to the Dublin International Gay Theatre Festival where Lynita Crofford won the award for best female performance. In November 2019 the play was performed at the Theatre on the Square in Sandton in Johannesburg where Lynita Crofford and Shirley Johnston both won the prestigious Naledi award for best lead performances in a play.

RAMAPUPPET is just over an hour of delightful, gut-wrenchingly funny, world-class ventriloquism poking fun at the bonkers hurdles South Africans face. From lockdown to looting, from Zoom meetings to alcohol bans, and that manager at Checkers who wields more power than Presidents, there is so much in Mzansi to laugh at. The show is family friendly. A great night out for everyone!

Shirley feels stuck in a rut and finds solace in her daily glass of wine as she muses over the lack of excitement in her life. When her best friend asks her to go to Greece with her for 2 weeks, Shirley jumps at the chance with a mix of exhilaration and jittery nerves. Leaving a note for her husband that simply reads “Gone to Greece – Back in two weeks”, Shirley leaves for her holiday.

Age restriction: PG (Contains adult themes). Tickets: R180 - R220 Book and Computicket | Theatre On The Bay box-office: (021) 438-3300 12

AFRICAN PENGUINS There are 17 seventeen known species of penguins in the world but the African Penguin is the only penguin species that breeds in Africa and it is found nowhere else, mainly due to the nutrient rich, Benguela Current. These flightless, aquatic birds have remained wonders for quite some time and the very best place to watch penguins in Cape Town is at Boulders Beach. Some 2km from Simon’s Town and home to a growing colony of the endangered African penguins, you will find Boulders Beach, a sheltered beach made up of inlets between big round granite boulders, said to be 540 million years old, from which the name originated. 14

l HELLO CAPE TOWN FEBRUARY 2022

From just two breeding pairs set up in 1983, it has now grown into a colony of about 3000 penguins, though this number keeps dropping. At Boulders beach, the penguins nest from February to August, in simple burrows in the sand or under plants. They moult in November and December. Visitors can view them in their natural habitat from the wheelchair-friendly wooden boardwalk at Foxy Beach. There is also a path next to the Kleintuin Road entrance from where you can spot penguins walking around. They roam freely on the beach and around. If you find them moving their head from side to side, take it as

a warning sign and distance yourself. The sea is good for swimming, so if you wish to take a jump in the water with those wonderful animals, do not restrict yourself from doing so! Penguins swim fast and can dive deep; it will be fun being in the water with them. The place is also suitable for children as immense boulders protect the cove from large waves and currents. The entrance fee which you pay (as Boulders Beach is part of the Table Mountain National Park) is used for the conservation of these penguins.

Darling

A small town gem Darling is a small town in a farming area on the west coast region of the Western Cape, about 75 km (46.6 mi) from Cape Town. Darling is a progressive with a good infrastructure and everything necessary to cover your daily needs. The village has its own supermarkets, banks, ATMs, a pharmacy, clinic, doctors, schools and several churches Explore the town on foot. Browse through the antiques and collectables and visit the interesting craft and gift shops. Enjoy a cup of coffee on the “stoep” of a coffee shop or at a farmstall. Linger a while and watch the locals go by. The annual rainfall of the area is 600mm. Most of the rainfall occurs from April to the end of August. The mean temperature during the summer is 24 degrees Celsius. At the beginning of the 18th century about 29 farmers lived in an area called Groenkloof and on one of these farms, Langfontein, Darling was founded in 1853. It was named after Sir Charles Henry Darling who came in 1851 to the Cape as Lieutenant Governor. The Darling Museum shows the history of the town and the Darling creamery which was established in 18

1899 by two Swedish settlers, Nils Georg Moller and G. Threnstrom, and was closed in 1950. The museum also holds a collection of large agricultural machines. Darling is famous for its wildflowers and since 1917 the annual Darling Wildflower show is held by the Darling Wildflower Society, founded in 1915 by Mrs. Suzanne Malan and Mr. Frederick Duckitt of Waylands.

Things to do in Darling Wild Flowers

During spring the fields and reserves in and around Darling explode with colour with brightly-coloured petals in all shapes and sizes. Year after year the Darling Wildflower Show celebrates the species of the Cape Fynbos Kingdom (Renosterveld, Rietveld, Sandveld and Strandveld) as the West Coast becomes one big floral carpet.

Evita se Perron

A must see when visiting Darling is Evita se Perron, where satirist Pieter Dirk Uys, turned the old Darling station into a theatrical experience. The restaurant, exhibition hall, garden displays and theatre is home to Uys’ alter ego, Tannie Evita Bezuidenhout, and shines some much needed humorous light on South Africa’s political history

Ormonde Private Cellar

Ormonde Private Cellar is situated on the West Coast of South Africa, where the rugged Darling hills roll and fall along the contours of a ancient granite intrusion. Ormonde Vineyards wines, coming from an exciting new wine region, have great depth and a distinctive bouquets. They are uniquely different – a diffence that has been recognised and awarded with many accolades.

CAPE TOWN’S 10 BLUE FLAG BEACHES Blue Flag status is an international accreditation awarded to beaches that meet 33 criteria in four main categories: environmental education and information, water quality, environmental management, and safety and services. Cape Town is blessed with 10 beaches that meet these criteria. Blue Flag season covers the summer months, daily from 10h00 to 18h00. Bikini Beach

BIKINI BEACH

CAMPS BAY BEACH

Located in Gordon’s Bay, a coastal village on the False Bay side of Cape Town. It’s the home to bikinis, board shorts and lots of fun in the sun. About 40-minutes’ drive from central Cape Town, this beach is popular for its warm water and the proximity to trendy restaurants and hotels. The views of the Hottentots-Holland mountain range simply add to the scenic setting that combines a gorgeous white beach and the purple hue of the mountains in the distance.

Camps Bay Beach

This majestic sweep of beach with its backdrop of the Twelve Apostles and Table Mountain is world famous. Lined with grassy verges and a row of iconic palm trees, it’s one of the most popular beaches in the Mother City.

CLIFTON 4TH BEACH

Clifton 4th Beach

Situated in one of Cape Town’s most affluent suburbs, Clifton’s beaches are a favourite among locals and visitors. Clifton comprises five beach coves separated by granite boulders and is well protected from the southeasterly wind. With perfect white sand and incandescent water. . It’s an idyllic spot for sunbathing, beach volleyball, frisbee, beach bats or just people watching.

FISH HOEK BEACH

Fish Hoek Beach

This warm-water beach on the western shores of False Bay is very popular with families. Its long stretch of sand is great for ambling, while the rocky ‘catwalk’ path (known as Jager Walk) at the southern end is picturesque and relatively protected from the southeaster. LLANDUDNO BEACH

Llandudno Beach

This pristine beach is a natural gem and is situated about 15 kilometres south of Cape Town, a narrow road winds down through an exclusive hillside suburb to this sandy cove bookended with enormous granite boulders. A favourite with locals, Llandudno is also a popular surfing beach. This is a great beach for families, games of frisbee and beach bats, or simply for watching the sun set into the Atlantic

Melkbosstrand Beach

MELKBOSSTRAND BEACH

Melkbosstrand literally translates as ‘milk-bush beach’ and refers to the Euphorbia plants that grow on the sand dunes and give off a milky, latex-like liquid. The beach offers stunning views of Robben Island and Table Mountain. Wide, long and safe, it’s perfect for walks and water sports such as kitesurfing, windsurfing, kayaking, fishing and boating (there’s a safe slipway for leisure craft on the north end of Melkbos Point).

Mnandi Beach

About 45 minutes from the city centre lies scenic Mnandi in the suburb of Mitchell’s Plain. The beach is conveniently located for local townships and is effectively a day resort for families and large groups. It combines safe swimming with plenty of amenities. The waters of False Bay are warmer than the Atlantic seaboard and there’s also a large swimming pool with waterslides to delight the children.

MNANDI BEACH

Muizenberg Beach

With its warm water and colourful Victorian bathing boxes, this is perhaps Cape Town’s most family-friendly beach. It’s also the best place on the peninsula to learn to surf, with small and regular waves ideal for beginners. This beautiful coastline comprising kilometres of pristine sand and is popular with dog walkers and every kind of surfer.

MUIZENBERG BEACH

Strandfontein Beach

Set on the False Bay coast in Mitchell’s Plain, Strandfontein has the largest tidal swimming pool in the southern hemisphere. The water is warm, but the southeasters can make this beach rather breezy. The swimming is safe with lifeguards on duty during Blue Flag season . The sweep of white sand is great for long walks (go in a group for safety), watching the sunset or whale viewing in winter and spring.

STRANDFONTEIN BEACH

Silverstroom Beach

Silwerstroomstrand, located on the West Coast and just north of Melkbosstrand, is a Blue Flag beach with excellent water quality and an expansive stretch of coastline in a wonderfully secluded setting. A small rocky point called Wintersteen provides protection from the swell for safe swimming in the sea, and there is also a tidal pool for those wanting a warmer dip without the waves .

EAGLES’ NEST WINES Eagles’ Nest was originally a section of Groot Constantia, the wine supplier to European nobility, established by Simon van der Stel in the late 1600’s. Eagles’ Nest’s history reveals that it operated as a commercial farm producing export fruit, as well as vegetables for the local market, up until the 1960’s. Over time the farm has had a number of owners, since 1984 it has been in the control of the Mylrea family.
