THE MOTHER

MARAT/SADE

church values and ‘unafricaness’.

Anne loved that time in her life when she prepared breakfast each morning for her two young children, Sara and Nicholas. Now her children have grown up and have lives and loves of their own.

Written by Peter Weiss in 1963 Marat/Sade is a bloody and unrelenting depiction of class struggle and human suffering that asks whether true revolution comes from changing society or changing oneself.

The play, based on interviews with more than fifty lesbian women and their families, is a clear message with a cry, a laugh and a smile, that everyone deserves to be respected for who they are.

Spending hours alone, Anne’s world begins to twist around her. Has her favoured son Nicholas really returned to her? And what of the suspicious actions of her husband?

The confrontation between two revolutionary thinkers: Jean-Paul Marat, a leading figure of the French Revolution, and the Marquis de Sade, who completely lacks faith in humanity and its capacity to progress, takes place against the backdrop of a theatre production by the inmates of the Charenton asylum.

Under the direction of the Marquis de Sade himself, who has been imprisoned for blasphemy and pornography, the inmates play out Jean-Paul Marat’s famous assassination in the bath by Charlotte Corday. Revolution and rage, asylum and stage – Peter Weiss’s play is simultaneously a historic philosophical reflection and a crazed theatrical spectacle. Baxter theatre, till 25 March, Tickets R130 - R160. from Computicket: 083 915 8000, www.computicket.mobi CHAPTER 2 SECTION 9 South Africa appears to be a little oasis of progressiveness on the African continent, however, when laws change, it doesn’t mean that attitudes on the ground do. The LGBTI community is still subjected to discrimination and hate crime; so-coined corrective rape of lesbians is still rife. Chapter 2, Section 9, teases apart the complication of sexual identity, from how one’s parents, grandparents, siblings and children respond to it, to grappling with

Artscape Theatre, 26 Mar- 23 Apr, Tickets R200 - R500 from Computicket: 083 915 8000, www.computicket.mobi RAW SILK RAW SILK is an edgy, intense true to life dance/drama with original songs, a compelling script and outstanding choreography. It will take you on a journey to the heart from the moment the curtain rises, and will remain there long after it falls. Where day is night and night is day, RAW SILK explores the dark and shadowy underworld of South Africa’s street children growing up in a harsh and unforgiving neighbourhood that seemingly cocoons them. This sensitive and thought-provoking production unveils the street children as “silkworms” that hold the most beautiful and precious threads of … RAW SILK Baxter Theatre, 28 Mar - 1 Apr, Tickets R120 from Computicket: 083 915 8000, www.computicket.mobi SCENES FROM AN EXECUTION Galactia, an impossibly transgressive artist, is commissioned by the Venetian republic to create a painting celebrating the triumph of Venice at the Battle of Lepanto in 1571. What emerges in her uncompromising pursuit of truth, is the ugliness of slaughter. Galactia herself is brilliant, vain, arrogant and politically naive. Will this most transgressive artist be co-opted by the state? This study of the relationship between the artist and the state is known to be British playwright Howard Barker’s most accessible and commercial play. It was first seen in South Africa at the Market Theatre in 1994 where it garnered multiple awards including the best director for Clare Stopford. Baxter Theatre, 30 Mar - 22 Apr, Tickets R130 - R160. from Computicket: 083 915 8000, www.computicket.mobi TRIAL BY JURY Trial by Jury satirises the procedure in an average breach of promise, and also the insincerity which may sometimes underlie the pose of “respectability.” Everything done or sung is ludicrous, and yet beneath it all lies a recognisable substratum of truth. The piece is a riot of laughter. The Judge’s ditty, “When first, my friends, I was called to the Bar,” is the best-known comic song in the English language.

Coffee lovers have always had their favourite haunts; some of these may be a well-kept secret by the locals. Well the secret is out, thanks to a chance comment by an English visitor, who was so enchanted with the Mother City and its vibrant coffee culture that she longed for a guide to show her the way. This book shares the location of some of Cape Town’s most appealing coffee shops and each section is prefaced with a map to help you plot your route. Each entry also includes information about parking, wifi and the type of coffee served, as well as some suggestions on what to do in the area.

we’ve been to

TRIPLE TREAT The On19 at the Westin Hotel gives hedonists one more wonderful experience to savour as one watches the sun sleepily set on the cambers of Lion’s Head & Signal Hill. With a glass of favorite wine in hand, the restaurant offers spectacular panoramic views of both the harbour and the slopes of Table Mountain - not to mention conveniently positioned at the beating entrance to Cape Town. The establishment compliments the magnificent location by offering modern comfort meshed with dining that focusing on simplicity, bold flavours and healthy lifestyle trends. In the beginning of 2017, the innovative mind behind this 5-Stars establishment added another layer of sophistication by creating ‘1On19 - 1 FLAVOUR. 1 CULTIVAR. 1 VENUE.’ For one evening a month, this exceptional venue hosts a concept night in which the menu features one seasonal ingredient through all the dishes of a 5 course meal. All meals are paired with a pallet of wines, all sourced of one cultivar and each one a top representative of its’ group. This particular evening we experienced: ‘Strawberry & Blush’ - a parade of beautiful and very thoughtful dishes that found a way to incorporate this stunning summery fruit into all courses. March promises ‘Chilli & Semillon’ as the limelight, and thereafter it will keep to draw attention to surprising, seasonal and striking ingredients that will awake the senses of even the most seasoned foodie. Naturally, it is the experience and passion behind any concept that creates a successful venture. At The Westin Cape Town, in addition to the very talented chef that makes these innovative gastronomical creations, you will also have the hotel’s Food & Beverage manager share his wealth of knowledge about local wines - his wit and sense of humor is the perfect Chery on top. THE

CO-CREATORS

Chuma Maweni and Madoda Fani create strong and elevated pieces through communicative collaboration Metamorphosis, a series of ceramic pieces by Chuma Maweni and Madoda Fani, is currently on show at Transformation in Southern Guild’s Cape Town gallery, with one of the pieces set to be auctioned at Christie’s, London in April this year. The pieces are big and brave and bold, and perfectly synthesize signature elements of Chuma’s and Madoda’s individual work. They are smoke fired, giving them an acutely traditional feel, and draw inspiration from the natural world with their organic, cocoon shapes, and insect-like decorative elements. The two artists met many years ago through fellow ceramicist and mutual friend Andile Dyalvane, while on a day trip to Kalk Bay. Fast-forward a couple of years and they found themselves both working at Art in the Forest, Anthony Shapiro’s picturesque ceramic studio in the Cecilia Forest. There they began to develop a strong appreciation for each other’s work, and a mutual respect for one another both as designers and people. They now share studio space, with Madoda’s brother Siyabonga, in The Palms in Woodstock, and began their first collaborative work in early 2016. What drew them together was their desire to create bigger and more sculptural ceramic pieces, to really push the boundaries of where clay could take them, and to express themselves in larger and bolder ways than they had before. And this is how Metamorphosis was born. In answer to a commission from Southern Guild co-founder Julian McGowan, for Transformation (a show exploring the fine line between art and design), the pair began the task of producing something that moved from the functional, to the expressive, to the aesthetic and to everything in between. And not only that, but also highlighted their relative strengths, drew on their signature styles and created something elevated, something new and something distinctly shared.

‘I do the throwing and sculpting, while Madoda does the embellishing and decoration, and then we take a step back and figure out together what it is the piece needs,’ says Chuma of their process. They work so well together that they have forgone sketchbooks all together, choosing rather to very roughly sketch out designs on the floor or tables or scrap paper before going straight into the production, knowing intuitively that they are on the same page. They both prefer a more traditional method of smoke-firing, which they do outside their studio in large steel drums, as this allows them to really connect with the process and the piece and gives their work its characteristic quality and element of heritage. ‘When collaborating, it is important to keep remembering that you are working with somebody else, you need to communicate all the time,’ says Chuma. Being open to suggestions, finding ways to agree on things and speaking up are integral to their process, as well as a shared idea of where the design, and the designer, is going. Metamorphosis not only brings together the two seemingly exclusive spheres of art and design, as set out by the Transformation brief, but also unites two very different ceramic styles and allows them to shine together as one.

Transformation runs until 15 March. For viewing after this date please make a call. 021 461 2856 l 10 Lewin Street, Woodstock l Open Monday - Friday 10am - 5pm Saturday by appointment l www. southernguild.co.za

what to see Rising up as a surreal backdrop to all of Cape Town is the extraordinary Table Mountain, and the state of the art Table Mountain Aerial Cableway will whisk you to the top in a picturesque 5-minute ride. Table Mountain is among the most popular attractions in the world, and it is no surprise that it holds the title as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. And while it’s impressive from pretty much anywhere in the City Bowl, it’s not until you soar to the top in an exhilarating ride on the cable car, with its rotating floor, that you can truly appreciate its stature, and the incredible city of Cape Town that bustles far below. Operating Hours: First car up 16 Sept to 30 Apr: 8:00 and 1 May to 15 Sept: 8:30. Last car down varies with sunset times but not before 17:00. Tel: 021 424 0015, www.tablemountain.net

There are few places in the Mother City as tranquil as Kirstenbosch Gardens, and at least once during your visit, when you stop to catch your breath and absorb the splendour of your surroundings, you’ll wonder how it’s possible that the bustling, buzzing city of Cape Town is just a stone’s throw away. These sprawling, landscaped gardens cover 36 hectares on the slopes of Table Mountain, and they blend in so effortlessly and majestically with the natural vegetation that you’d be forgiven for not realising their true scale. And when you consider how much there is to see and do in the gardens, from atmospheric sunset concerts and movie screenings, through to guided walks, popular restaurants, and an award-winning treetop walkway, it’s quite likely you’ll be planning your return visit before you’ve even left. Operating Hours: Sept-Mar (Summer) Mon-Sun: 08:00-19:00, Apr-Aug (Winter) Mon-Sun: 08:00-18:00, Conservatory Mon-Sun: 09:00 -17:00. There are few things as exhilarating as standing at the base of a beautiful, 150 year old lighthouse, perched precariously high above the swirling Atlantic Ocean, and knowing that you’re at the most southwestern tip of Africa. Knowing that the next closest landmass, when you look across the icy seas, is Antarctica – more than 4,000 kilometres away. The panoramic views that spread out before you are breath-taking. Literally, because you’ve just earned them with a final push up the final flight of stairs from the upper funicular station. And once you’re there, it’s impossible not to spend a few silent minutes taking in the gravity of the dramatic location, before you instinctively reach for your camera. This is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and offers hiking, surfing, angling, picnicking, beaching and cycling opportunities against the spectacular backdrop of the mountains and coastline of the most south western point in Africa. Cape Point offers visitors excellent viewing opportunities from the two lighthouses that adorn the point – one still functional, informative interpretive signage that traces the cultural and natural history of the Point. The lighthouse is accessible by foot or you can catch the Flying Dutchman

funicular to the top. P.S. Baboons in the parking lot are not a rare picture as one might think. Operating Hours: Winter: Apr – Sept: 07:00 - 17:00 Summer: Oct – March: 06:00 - 18:00 Visit capepoint.co.za for more.

After you have fallen in love with the penguins head to the secluded Boulders Beach and take a swim in the comparatively warm waters of the False Bay. This beach is ideal for kids as immense boulders shelter the cove from currents, wind and large waves - but please always take care. Also, don’t touch or feed the penguins. They might look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as sharp as razors and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping the odd finger or nose. Operating Hours: Winter: Apr – Sept: 08:00 - 17:00. Summer: Oct – Nov: 08:00 - 18:30, Dec – Jan: 07:00 - 19:30, Feb – March: 08:00 - 18:30 Tel: 021 786 2329. www.sanparks.org

There are few places in South Africa that bear the weight and sheer historical importance of Robben Island, and a trip to the former prison serves as a jarring reminder of country’s troubled political past. At the same time, it reveals itself as a powerful symbol for the triumph of the human spirit, and offers fascinating insight into the reconciliation and resilience that played such a key role in the development of a new South Africa. From the moment you arrive at the humble island, just a short ferry ride from the V&A Waterfront, you’ll feel the impact of this World Heritage Site. A former inmate will guide you while on the island, and you’ll receive unparalleled insight into the significant role that each of the Robben Island’s inmates collectively played throughout apartheid. Operating Hours: Ferries depart at 9:00, 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00, weather permitting, from Nelson Mandela Gateway, at the V&A Waterfront, Tel: 021 413 4220/1, www.robben-island.org.za

Halfway between the bright lights of Cape Town and the statuesque mountains of the Western Cape, lies the hidden valley of Wellington, full of surprises and variety, heart and soul. The Berg river flows along the western border with two smaller streams, the Spruit and Kromme and the mighty Hawequas stands guard on the eastern side. The Bainskloof Pass, built by the famous Scot, Andrew Geddes Bain was (before Du Toitskloof Pass) the only gateway to the north. More French people settled here than anywhere else in the Cape and the valley was initially called Val du Charron – valley of the wagon-makers, the last outpost before travellers, pioneers and adventurers attempted the arduous journey into thehinterland with their oxen and theirwagons. For those in the know who find themselves dreaming of the season’s newest prints and fantasizing about the texture and feeling a piece of fabric evokes, you will also know that for the last few seasons, South African menswear is getting a lot more cred than the women’s side of things. There is a crop of very talented young menswear designers emerging from the ranks of the country’s fashion schools and colleges, the recent Lexus South African Menswear Week in Cape Town being testament to this. One of them is Lukhanyo Mdingi, known not just for his expertly crafted garments but for their interpretation into visually compelling photographic campaigns, with a little help from his friends, the whose who of Cape Town’s creative fashion scene. ‘I have been very fortunate to have been affiliated to a small group of extraordinary and remarkably talented human beings consisting of Travys Owen, Kent Andreasen, Gabbi Kannemeyer and more. They’ve helped me interpret the look and feel of the clothes, to create remarkable visual stories about them,’ says Lukhanyo. When considering the exceptional imagery that Lukhanyo has creatively directed for all his collections it becomes clear that a narrative of a new kind of African aestheticism emerges. It’s one that is genuinely cutting-edge, futuristic even, and never before seen in the pages of international fashion magazines (luckily for us locals we are the first to experience new talent like this). It’s a narrative that could only be constructed by creatives who’ve lived

and loved here, as it represents a contemporary African identity that is freed from the stereotypes associated with all aspects of the continent. ‘The aim of my latest collection, Purgation, was to identify a true reflection and expression of a contemporary interpretation of our African heritage’, he says of this range that was inspired by the artisanal tapestries of indigenous African iconography and print-work. ‘The precisely designed pieces seamlessly flow into a nostalgic African narrative that celebrates the history and the power of story-telling but that also evokes a modern identity that coincides here in the heart of Africa’ he says. Aside from his very conceptual and innovative approach to his work, he also happens to be a very approachable guy, who’s achieved a lot in his 25 years. From being a finalist in the Elle and Mr Price Rising Star competition, to showing his first collection at SA Menswear week at the age of 23, to being featured in international magazine Vice for his unique campaigns as well as the much lauded Gestalten book Africa Rising. Add to this various modelling gigs and personality profiles for some local retailers and it’s evident that Lukhanyo’s star is on the rise. When asked about his career highlight however he comes back down to earth with an admirable and humbling answer. ‘I’d have to say simply having the opportunity to be affiliated with extraordinary people that have been part of my journey. I feel that we represent a sort of spring board to inspire others to do better than their best.’ View current collections on-line at lukhanyomdingi.co.za

Hello Cape Town March 2017

hello art WOMEN’S WORK TILL 30 APRIL IZIKO SOUTH AFRICAN NATIONAL GALLERY A showcase of innovation demonstrated by a diverse group of contemporary South African artists and crafts practitioners who, through the use of traditional handcraft techniques such as knitting, crocheting, weaving and embroidery, creatively re-interpret a visual language that blurs the boundaries between art, craft and gendered spaces. LIVING OUTSIDE FROM 5 MARCH 2017. OPEN EVERY DAY. HENRY TAYLOR GALLERY, LOURENSFORD WINE ESTATE. German photographer, Frank Schönau, uses his lens to capture Cape Town’s otherwise invisible community, those we look at daily but do not see. His portraits reveal with dignity, the depth, vulnerability, and resilience of those who willingly or unwillingly live on the outside. ART@DURBANVILLEHILLS OPEN EVERY DAY DURBANVILLE HILLS WINE ESTATE

A brand new outdoor exhibition and experience-based sculpture garden that offers visitors a cultural journey. This new outdoor exhibition space serves as an evolving platform of international and local artworks. The first exhibition incorporates works from three exciting local artists, Ruhan Janse van Vuuren, Marke Meyer and Andre Stead. TREE OF LIFE YOUNGBLOOD GALLERY, 70 - 72 BREE STREET An exhibition in collaboration with Nix Davies and other artists, relating to Yggdrasil (a mythical tree) and the African baobab. All the myths and legends around these trees are building up to an Afrikaburn sculpture and long term project. 3 WOMEN 1 - 25 MARCH 99 LOOP GALLERY Three solo exhibitions by women artists known for their distinctive work: Clare Menck, Karen Cronje & Jeanne Hoffman. Menck has firmly established herself as one of South Africa’s top naturalistic painters, with her placid pools and floating bodies. ‘Nocturne (Mood Pieces)’ sees Menck celebrating female older bodies

and working with a new medium: oil on aluminium, which emphasizes the bright tones of her landscapes and the joyful flesh of her subjects. After a hiatus from the fine art world spent teaching, Cronje has returned to painting with a strongly confident and unique style. In ‘Surface Tension’, she explores a range of ideas centering around the notion of a dystopian view of the contemporary world, which reflects her interest in landscape, memory and the intersection of human interaction with the environment. She creates painted collages of images sources from personal and online photos, blurring the line between experience and vicariousness. Ceramicist and painter Hoffman is from Cape Town, but has participated in residencies in Finland, the Netherlands and Belgium, where she met her husband, fellow artist and printmaker Wim Legrand, with whom she runs the popular 50ty/50ty print collection, which promotes the work of other young local artists. These experiences inform the subject matter of her work, which references journeys and transformations, and explores the emotional and socio-cultural dimensions of place. Hoffman describes her approach as building ‘temporary shelters for thoughts – wandering from one place to another, collecting observations, memories and meaning’.

sourcing talent

The Cape Craft + Design Institute (CCDI) has launched recently launched its 3rd new subsidiary business: CCDI Connect. This business enables corporate, government and individual buyers to procure beautiful local products from creative Small, Medium and Micro-sized Enterprises (SMMEs) that are usually unable to access these procurement channels. CCDI Connect draws on the many years of experience the CCDI has accrued with its previously operated Order Facilitation Service. The catalogue features a wide range of beautiful market-ready products from the CCDI’s extensive database of talented designers, and can be accessed through the new website. Buyers are invited from all over South Africa to support local creative businesses by connecting with this non-profit initiative. The CCDI Connect online catalogue currently features over 170 products and is set to grow substantially as more producers across the country sign up over 2017. The product categories include: corporate and promotional gifts; fashion and jewellery; textiles and soft furnishings; furniture and décor; ceramics; health and beauty; and conference stationery and accessories, among others. For those buyers looking for something more unique, CCDI Connect offers a bespoke custom-designed product service which includes an end-to-end solution to meet the client’s specific needs – a particularly useful service for corporate events or developing a range of personalised corporate gifts. This new business opens up the opportunity for buyers to participate in the greater movement towards social responsibility and development of the South African economy through the development of SMME’s. recommended wildlife must-dos

Duiker Island: Cape Fur Seals Loving known as the ‘dogs of the sea’ for their sweet nature and playful frolicking, the Cape Fur Seals naturally occur on islands around SA and are found nowhere else in the world. Duiker island is home to over 6000 seals who love to sun themselves about on the rocks and audibly snort and grunt at one another, bobbing in the swell while keeping an eye out for fish to eat. They’re mostly brown, but shades vary from caramel to dark chocolate. The pups are born black and slowly grow lighter. These water-logged dogs are inquisitive and friendly when in the water, and will often ‘escort’ scuba divers and snorkelers – but a word of caution: on land they are far less relaxed and tend to panic when people come near them, so rather keep your distance. While the local fishermen may complain about the mischievous bunch, they are a pleasure to watch as they dance in in the water, jouncing along the boat and will often hold a flipper held high to give you

African Penguins of Boulders beach Boulders Beach near Simon’s Town is arguably one of the most beautiful spots in Cape Town – not simply for the venerable granite boulders, crashing crystal-blue waves and the silky white sands, but it’s tiny tuxedoed locals! The African penguins (fondly known as jackass penguins, because of the braying sounds they make) established their colony 1983 and remains the only place in the world where one can get up-close to African penguins. Boulders itself consists of 3 pristine beaches, 1 penguin viewing area and 3 boardwalks. The boardwalks are placed as a measure to allow for viewing of these marvellous birds, whilst keeping them safe from poking fingers and irresponsible behaviour of people, so please be sure to stay on the boardwalks at all times within the viewing area. Please take care not to touch or feed the penguins – they may look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as razor sharp and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping a finger or nose! You should be able to see the fancily dressed fellows throughout the year - but for a real treat, try to visit in January when the juvenile birds are moulting on the beach. Of course Beach space depends on the tides, so make sure to come at low tide and visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Note, there is limited parking, so arrive early during peak Summer months! Looking for a heart-pumping adrenalinespiking experience? Why not swim with the Atlantic’s most ferocious fish in the Great White Shark capital of the world Gansbaai? Walk, or rather, swim on the on the wild side with a life-changing experience you will most certainly never forget. Shark diving in can be divided into 2 main seasons: High season - May to October: this the best time to see Great White sharks as the visibility is good and shark activity escalates. Low season: January to March, however shark activity still continues and you have a good chance of spotting these majestic creatures. To avoid disappointment, we recommend that you call the company and ask about their current shark sighting and/or schedule a few days before. As a heads up, it’s a stunning boat ride out with the pros wherein 4/5 people jump in the cage at one time upon a sighting. Although the water temperature may shock you more than the shark, the adrenaline will warm you up quickly! Although nothing beats a genuine face-toface encounter with a Great White, there is also the option to either just tag along for the boat ride or see the phenomenal show from the upper deck of the boat – don’t forget those cameras! Chacma baboons of Cape Of Good Hope If you have taken a road trip along the coastal road, you will have bound to bump into a troop or two of some furry primates lolling about foraging, playing or fussing over one another - A human society in miniature, the Chacma baboons in the Cape Of Good Hope Park are truly interesting and uniquelot to observe. What makes this particular large collection of 6 troops unique is during the low tide they may be found roaming the beaches feeding on sand hoppers and shellfish - a very unusual behaviour for primates as their diet mainly consists of fruits, roots, bulbs, insects and scorpions. Watching this bunch can be very rewarding - but do so from a discreet distance. Please don’t get out of your car and leave it open,

especially if you have food inside. Keep your windows mostly up and even your doors locked as these quick and agile baboons have been known to jump into cars and steal food, bags and any loose items! The dominant males have especially large teeth and a dangerous (and painful) bite. Do not feed these animals because this leads to problem behaviour from these highly intelligent primates. These primates are also notorious for their destructive behaviour and if conditioned to receive food may have to be eliminated for public safety. The Chacma baboon troops on the Cape peninsula are the only protected population of the species in the world due to human activity and interaction. Here are some do’s and don’ts: • DO keep a safe distance from baboons • DO move away slowly if a baboon approaches you • DO takes pictures from the safety of your vehicle or a safe distance

Discover

• DO NOT display food when baboons are visible • DO NOT tease or agitate the baboons • DO NOT open the windows or doors of your car when baboons are present • DO NOT feed baboons. You will be fined.

#MarineBig5

INVERDOORN GAME RESERVE Inverdoorn is the largest private wildlife reserve in the area, providing sanctuary to an abundance of wildlife. The game reserve offers a premier safari experience including game drives, luxury accommodation and incredible insight into the rescue and rehabilitation of the cheetah. Inverdoorn is also home to the Big 5 - the elephant, lion, rhino, buffalo and the elusive leopard. The game is thriving and during your safari you may come across herds of eland, gemsbok and zebra, or hippos wallowing in the dam. The rhinos, with their horns intact, are a distinct highlight, combined with the magic of walking with giraffes and watching the cheetah run. This beautiful, big cat is the heart and soul of Inverdoorn. In 2001 Cape Cheetah was established, which seeks to rescue and rehabilitate cheetahs and, ultimately, release them into the wild.

You might be lucky to see the Marine Big 5 around the famous Dyer Island eco-system: Sharks, Dolphins, Whales, Seals and Penguins. A free visit to the African Penguin & Seabird Sanctuary is included.
