Upon arrival he must deal with an ageing mother and a younger brother who has been sucked into gang life. The first concert features Brandon Phillips in the Mozart Bassoon Concerto, allowing audiences to see a lesser seen side of the resident conductor of the CPO, conductor of the Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and principal bassoon of the CPO. The main work on the programme, with Gueller is the Beethoven Symphony No. 1.
The CPYWE opens the third Spring Cyber Symphony under the direction of Faan Malan, and performs a Folk Song Suite by Vaughan Williams. Gueller conducts the CPO in a work that showcases woodwinds, horns and the lower strings, for there are no violins in Brahms’s Serenade No 2 in A. Gerhard Joubert, who just garnered three prizes in the Johann Vos Music Competition, performs Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor. The final concert in the Spring Cyber Symphony season begins with Brandon Phillips conducting in CPYO in Beethoven’s Egmont Overture. Tickets for this season are R440 for all four concerts and R120 for single tickets and can be bought via Quicket.
app the bus
The official MyCiTi app, introduced to the public last year, have become a reliable source of commute planning and real time information for locals and travelers along Cape Towns’ Atlantic Seaboard. It is the perfect companion to the full, printed, MyCiTi map, available by Hello Cape Town on the Go. Once you figured out you destination and route number you can simply and quickly find the next bus due to arrive to the station near you. From Big Bay and Bloubergstrand all the way to Hout Bay, including all the routes in the inner city. From landing at the airport all the way to our wonderful Clifton and Camps Bay beaches, you can now top up your card and get everywhere safely and hustle free. MyCiTi app users make use of the personal planning tools to map out their journey; search for timetables and buses; calculate their trip fare; and, those with Android phones, are able to check their card balance. An aspect that has proved to be very helpful, especially to those who have time-sensitive schedules, are the live updates and notifications relating to timetables; routes or news alerts while they are travelling. When passengers view the bus timetables on the app, the location of buses are tracked and the scheduled times are updated with more reliable estimates of when each bus is due to arrive. Key Features Track your Bus: View timetables by route or stop with live updates so you know when your bus is due to arrive. Check your balance {for Android only} :Check your card balance so you always have enough value to travel. Find your closest stop: Find bus stops and departure times near you based on your phone’s GPS. Plan your journey: Plan your journey, including connections to other transport modes and with handy directions. Search using GPS, an address, a MyCiTi stop or point of interest. Save your favourite stops, routes or places: Personalise your dashboard by saving your favourite routes, stops and destinations for instant access. Receive service alerts: Keep up to date with the latest service alerts that affect you. Calculate your fare: Find out the distance-based fare for your next MyCiTi journey. Top-up your card: Find your closest card points of sale and top-up points using an interactive map. FLASH FLY KITING POP-UP EVENTS
It is said that imagination is the highest kite one can fly, so this October Cape Mental Health invites you to rise against the wind and join us at the Hybrid 27th Cape Town International Kite Festival. From 2 to 31 October, bold kites all over the world will soar skywards to show that #EveryoneDeservesToFly.
People all over the world will be flying their kites at the Hybrid 27th Cape Town International Kite Festival between 2 and 31 October.
Cape Mental Health’s annual flagship event is going hybrid for its 27th edition, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The goal is to raise over R100 000,00 to enable this hardworking non-profit organisation to continue providing essential free mental healthcare services and ensuring that everyone, regardless of who they are or where they live, can enjoy equality in mental health access and care in an unequal world. Flying against the winds of adversity, this year’s interactive event combines real-life open-air kite-flying with online kitemaking workshops, competitions and videos. Join kiters all over the globe and fly your kite at the Hybrid 27th Cape Town International Kite Festival, anywhere and anytime between 2 and 31 October. Share your photos, videos and messages of encouragement, tagging #EveryoneDeservesToFly and @CTKiteFest, and feature on the official CTKiteFest social feeds. Access all CTKiteFest online content including a variety of kite-making workshops and interviews with our kiting friends from all over the world and find out why they fly in support of Cape Mental Health. Get inspired by the magic of soaring kites with activities for the little ones, or let your imagination fly high with our creative innovation competition! The Hybrid 27th Cape Town International Kite Festival promises to be an uplifting mix of magical, carefree fun. In South Africa, October is on the cusp of summer and an ideal time to get outdoors, fly a kite, laugh and enjoy a sense of play and freedom. Hold onto your kite line and let go of anxiety, stress and - most importantly - help raise awareness and funds for Cape Mental Health, because #EveryoneDeservesToFly.

l Hello Cape Town September 2021
Cape Mental Health invites you to view kites at Dolphin Beach on 10 October (World Mental Health Day), and at Zandvlei Nature Reserve on 23 October 2021. Gather family, friends or colleagues, wear green and plan a ‘flash fly’ to enjoy time together in the fresh air at a safe, social distance while giving hope and raising funds for Cape Mental Health.
The Cape Town International Kite Festival is the oldest kiting event in Africa and has been proudly hosted by Cape Mental Health since 1994, to raise funds and promote mental wellness. It is traditionally one of the biggest kite festivals on the African continent and attracts professional kiters from around the world who fund their way to Cape Town in support of Cape Mental Health (unlike other international festivals where the kiters’ travel is usually sponsored by the organisers). For more information on the Hybrid 27th Cape Town International Kite Festival, please visit: www.capementalhealth.co.za/ EveryoneDeservesToFly.

whale season South Africa has to be one of the most incredible destinations worldwide for watching marine mammals. In early June, southern right whales leave their Antarctic feeding ground to frolic in the warm waters of the Cape coast. Here they mate, calve and generally hang out, occasionally flopping a tail up, or sticking their heads out of the water to check out the humans. To see migratory southern right or humpback whales, visit between June and October, the best

It meanders for 11 km along the rugged coastline, between the New Harbour to the west, and Piet-se-Bos, just beyond Grotto Beach, to the east. It is on the Hermanus cliff path that some of the world’s best land-based whale watching occurs (from August/September). Set at regular intervals on rocks and cliffs that overlook the sea are a series of wooden benches for that very purpose The annual marine visitors are part of Hermanus’ identity, the town boasts the world’s only ‘whale crier’.

one of the most beautiful hikes in South Africa. Make sure to book this hike with Cape Nature well in advance due to the high demand. Nature lovers seeking true escape will find this at De Hoop Nature Reserve. The world-famous De Hoop dunes are known as an epic whale sighting spot. Relax in the unspoilt setting and watch in awe as these beautiful creatures calve, blow, breach, belly-flop, spyhop and tail-slap. Don’t forget your binoculars though because most of the action is a few metres out (and calves aren’t highly visible from shore). The De Hoop Reserve is a World Heritage Site and one of the world’s most important nurseries for the Southern Right Whale.
Plettenberg Bay At Plettenberg Bay, whales visit during May and June and then again on their return migration, from November to January. Bottlenose and humpback dolphins are in residence all year round. A breeding colony of Cape fur seals completes Plettenberg Bays’ impressive array of marine mammals. Whale watching trips in boats, kayaks and aircraft are on offer in this seaside town and viewing distances and time spent with each animal is strictly monitored so that there is minimal interference These huge beasts sometimes loll around mere meters from the shore, thus they are clearly visible for some spectacular shore and cliff based whale watching from points along Robberg and Keurboom beaches and Robberg Nature Reserve. The dolphin and whale-watching industry is well organized, with boat trips, a dolphin-watching kayak operation and a number of aircraft from which you can have impressive aerial sightings. Plett Tourism promotes and support a responsible boat-based whale and dolphin-watching program. Operators are closely monitored to ensure that the recommended distances and time spent with each animal is being adhered to ensure minimal interference and impact on marine animals. For more information contact Plett Tourism on: 044-533 4065. visit stellenbosch unveils exciting new festival of gardens VISIT STELLENBOSCH UNVEILS EXCITING NEW FESTIVAL OF GARDENS Inaugural Garden Week showcases nature through talks, tours, art, wine and food South Africa’s favourite city of oaks, Stellenbosch, is pulling out the stops for gardeners and lovers of the great outdoors in a new, weeklong festival that will transform its streets and surrounding countryside from 30 September to 10 October. Major drawcards include a first-ever Stellenbosch winelands experience featuring SA Michelin star chef Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen. The inaugural Garden Week Stellenbosch – inspired by the worldfamous flower festival of Girona, Spain - will encompass everything from horticultural tours to landscape art; dining to hiking; and, guest specialists to music in majestic settings. In addition to a host of highlights for fans of flora and Mother Nature in general will be a flower parade, which officially launches Garden Week Stellenbosch on 30 September. The event is an initiative of Visit Stellenbosch, a destination marketing organisation comprising the region’s tourism stakeholders with the objective of growing the tourism and experience economy in Stellenbosch for the benefit of all communities. Furthermore, it represents the collaboration of a multitude of local businesses, including restaurants and activity providers, as well as Stellenbosch Wine Routes, Stellenbosch Municipality, Stellenbosch Visio, Stellenbosch Outdoor Sculpture Trust (SOST), Rama, Remgro, Candide App and Garden Day SA. Garden Week takes place in the run-up to National Garden Day on 17 October and encompasses the school break. Together, they inspired Garden Week’s educational initiative, organised in partnership with Rama and New Life Microgreens and which provides children with “Microshooters” microgreen grow kits-in-a-tub. The project is an extension of Rama’s

work with the Department of Education, undertaken since 2017 to help teach school-going children about the value of good nutrition via the Rama Good Breakfast programme. “We are so proud to be partnering with Microshooters for the Stellenbosch Garden Week, when 6 200 school children will be provided a Rama tub filled with goodies that allow them to experience the wonderful world of growing good food,” says Rama brand manager Sasha Sathianathan. “We are honoured to be part of this initiative.” Garden Week will also feature several installations to be carried out by landscapers and local botanical artists. Located at landmarks throughout town, these works will not only be part of the pageantry, but also serve to highlight the town’s well-preserved history. Among them will be a giant centrepiece – a plant labyrinth at The Braak, the town’s main square. Storefronts around town as well as local wine farms will echo the theme with special offers, floral designs, and greenery while local accommodation providers have instituted promotional rates for the run of the festival. Open gardens and nature walks Some of the region’s most splendid public gardens will be open to visitors, including the historic Old Nectar estate in the Jonkershoek Valley; the Dylan Lewis Sculpture Garden in Paradyskloof; Spier Wine Farm, whose workshops include one for children; and, Delaire Graff Estate. The owners of some 20 private gardens will participate too, giving visitors a rare glimpse of exquisite and usually inaccessible spaces. Guided walks give visitors the chance to enjoy the gardens in the company of guides while the more energetic might wish to undertake fynbos wilderness hikes on offer. Talks and workshops A renowned centre of excellence, the Stellenbosch Botanical Gardens has compiled a special programme of daily walks and talks to be presented by acclaimed specialists. Workshops
are also to be presented at the Rupert Museum; Blaauwklippen Wine Farm off the R44; Jordan Wines; Spier Estate and Babylonstoren, where tours will be presented by Ernst van Jaarsveld. Topics include flower arranging, dye art, photography, growing-your-own and learning about bees. For budding artists, the Stellenbosch Arts Association will present a botanical drawing workshop. Food and wine Stellenbosch is the heartland of South African wine and home to leading chefs and restaurateurs too. This reputation will be showcased in festival-inspired dishes to feature on menus as well as a series of garden-and-wine dining events. Among them is an exquisite Finding Eden experience with South African Michelin star chef Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen. This casual tête à tête will take place at Blaauwklippen Estate’s magical Cathedral and will include an exploration of the gardens in Jan Hendrik’s life. From Le Jardin de JAN in Nice, France – his Michelinstar restaurant’s new potager garden and picnic spot – to his new culinary playground in the Kalahari; and, how the journey is documented in JAN the Journal. Another festival highlight is a sevencourse Botanical Banquet prepared by JAN Innovation Studio in Cape Town, which brings the JAN experience to the Stellenbosch winelands for the first time. It’s a homecoming of sorts; this is where Jan Hendrik attended culinary school and refined his taste in wine. The meal will comprise elements from his award-winning establishments in Nice and the Kalahari, at a table created by renowned floral designer Alwijn Burger a.k.a Blomboy, and inspired by Blaauwklippen’s beautiful gardens and rare finds. More information The full Garden Week Stellenbosch programme and pricing will go live on August 17 at https://www. visitstellenbosch.org/. Alternatively, contact VisitStellenbosch on 021 886 4310 or e-mail info@ visitstellenbosch.org for information.

family connect Netcare launches Family Connect Line to keep COVID-19 patients and their loved ones connected Dedicated personnel deployed to enhance communication between patients and families In mid-January 2021 Netcare launched a dedicated support line to keep next-of-kin informed on the status of their loved ones who have been hospitalised with COVID-19 and, where possible, to facilitate direct communication between patients and their families. This is in line with the healthcare group’s focus on placing each patient in hospital and their loved ones at the centre of the care provided to them. “The significant surge in people with COVID-19 infections requiring hospitalisation has forced us to focus our attention primarily on optimising our clinical resources to provide the best and safest care possible for all patients,” says Dr Richard Friedland, chief executive officer of Netcare. Unfortunately, as a result of the strain on our resources, communication with patients’ loved ones has at times been affected. “We understand that the hospitalisation of a loved one can be very stressful and anxiety provoking for the next-of-kin, especially during this time when, in order to mitigate the risk of the virus spreading in our hospitals, visitation has been suspended other than in exceptional cases. “As a result and in an effort to improve communication, we have set up the Netcare Family Connect Line. This makes it possible for families to engage with dedicated personnel, mainly social workers who we deployed for this purpose, for information on the status of their loved ones admitted with COVID-19 to any of our Netcare hospitals countrywide, whilst enabling us to maintain patient confidentiality,” Dr Friedland explained. “We understand how crucial it is for families to know how their loved ones in our care are doing, and this new service is dedicated to fulfilling this need,” Dr Friedland says. The number for the Netcare Family Connect Line is 0800 111 266. It will be operational weekdays from 08:00 to 18:00 and weekends from 08:00 to 17:00. The Netcare Family Connect Line service enables patients’ next-of-kin to connect with one of our team of trained call centre professionals, who will facilitate the feedback process. A dedicated Netcare representative at the hospital where the patient is cared for will obtain information on the patient’s status, and will personally phone the family member to provide feedback. Messages to and from the family and patient will also be relayed where direct communication between the family and patient is not possible. Feedback will be provided within hours of the first enquiry and thereafter on a daily basis. Netcare has, since the start of the month, already recruited and deployed 30 social workers to support patients and their families in non-clinical patient liaison roles, which enables healthcare workers to focus solely on their clinical and nursing duties. Netcare hospitals are in the process of expanding the number of social workers to ensure that their services will continue over weekends too. “Already, we are seeing the profound value that the social workers’ efforts have brought for families through facilitating better communication in these unprecedented times, and we believe that this telephonic support service will enhance connection between patients and their loved ones even further.” How the Netcare Family Connect Line works To ensure that loved ones stay connected to patients admitted to Netcare hospitals with COVID-19, Netcare has established a national Family Connect Line, with dedicated Netcare personnel deployed as liaison between patients and their next-of-kin.
Here’s how to use the line: • Phone 0800 111 266 during the Netcare Family Connect Line’s operating hours: Mondays to Fridays, 08:00 to 18:00 and Saturdays and Sundays, 08:00 to 17:00. • Provide the call centre professional with the patient’s case number, which will enable them to immediately identify the patient and the hospital where he or she is being cared for, as well as with your name and surname. This case number is sent via sms to patients admitted to hospital as from Monday, 18 January 2021 as well as to those listed as their next-of-kin.

• Should you not have the patient’s case number, we will require the following information: - Patient’s name and surname - Patient’s ID number - Hospital where the patient is being cared for - Date of the patient’s admission - Your name and surname • The call centre professional will relay your enquiry to a dedicated Netcare representative – either a social worker or patient liaison officer – at the hospital where the patient is cared for, who will confirm with the patient that we may disclose information on their status to you. • The dedicated Netcare representative will contact you telephonically within hours, with information on your loved one’s status. In cases where the representative cannot facilitate direct contact between the patient and family, they will also relay any messages to and from the patient and family, and will continue to update you on the patient’s status on a daily basis during their hospital stay.
