DELHEIM STOMPS, RATTLES AND ROLLS WITH START OF HARVEST CELEBRATION 31 January and 1 February DELHEIM WINE ESTATE, KNORHOEK RD, SIMONSBERG WARD, STELLENBOSCH Proving that there is life after the holidays, the Sperling family invites you to share with us ‘Days in the life of Delheim’ as we stomp in the harvest in high spirits. During these two days we swap the commotion in the cellar and vineyard for a harvest hullabaloo on our legendary wine farm, which ranges from a grape stomping contest to laidback picnic indulgences on the lawn. The fun in the sun starts at noon, both days, when guests are welcomed with a glass of fermenting grape must and a sweet ‘mosbolletjie’, a traditional harvest treat, to toast the new vintage. Grapes harvested on the day will also be out for sampling, whilst young and old can get knee-deep in grape juice glee to get a real hands-on experience of winemaking. A long, buffet-style Harvest Table will entice families and friends in the lush picnic area where they can chill out on the grass at the river’s edge and enjoy delicious food to the sounds of a live band. Another highlight of this annual get-together is the main grape stomping competition – a mushy clash in which teams stomp their hearts out to

produce the most juice. Fabulous prizes are up for grabs for the best team, boldest spirit, and best dressed on the day. Tickets to the Delheim Start of Harvest Celebration 2015 are limited to 120 adults per day and cost R285 per adult (R175 per child under 12; kids under 2 are free). MORTGAGES FOR FOREIGNERS KEY INFORMATION FOR PROPERTY ACQUISITION AS A NON-RESIDENT Information courtesy of STBB - SMITH TABATA BUCHANAN BOYES South Africa’s well established legal framework offers first world security of title to foreign buyers of immovable property. There are no restrictions on the ownership by non-residents of property situated in South Africa, except of course that, foreigners who are in the country illegally may not own property here. There are, however, procedures and requirements which must be complied with and the next few paragraphs will provide answers to some frequently asked questions that foreign buyers of South African property may have. CAN FOREIGN FUNDS BE BROUGHT INTO SOUTH AFRICA TO BUY PROPERTY? Yes, foreign funds can be paid into any bank account in South Africa. Usually the foreign purchaser will pay the purchase price for the property bought into the trust account of the estate agent that brokered the sale or into the trust account of the conveyancing attorney who attends to the registration of the transaction. Both estate agents and attorneys are covered by Fidelity Funds, which guard against theft or negligence on the side of the agent or attorney. When a non-resident transfers funds from a foreign source into a South African bank account, a record known as a ‘Deal Receipt’ is issued by the South African bank. This is an important document and the non-resident will need to submit it to the Reserve Bank when, in future, he sells the property and wishes to return the funds to the foreign country. CAN MONEY BE BORROWED IN SOUTH AFRICA TO BUY PROPERTY? Non-residents purchasing a property in South Africa may borrow up to a maximum of 50% of the purchase price from a South African financial institution.

by the non-resident, the company must in addition appoint a public officer who is a South African resident. MUST A PURCHASER BE PRESENT IN SOUTH AFRICA TO SIGN THE DOCUMENTS OF THE TRANSFER? Fortunately a purchaser need not necessarily be personally present in South Africa to sign the documents that are required for the registration of transfer of ownership in the property. However, there are formalities that must be complied with in such a case, requiring that the documents must be signed either before a Notary Public or at the South African Embassy in the foreign country. Both these options are unfortunately usually costly and time consuming. It is often to the non-resident’s best advantage, whether he is selling or buying, to execute a Special Power of Attorney prior to departing from South Africa in favour of a local friend, family member, or attorney so that this person can act and sign documentation on his behalf. It is important to remember that an affidavit cannot be signed by the person holding the Power of Attorney on your behalf. For this reason there will invariably still be some documents for such client to sign abroad. WHEN A NON-RESIDENT SELLS A PROPERTY, CAN THE MONEY BE TAKEN OUT OF SOUTH AFRICA? Yes, money that was introduced to South Africa from a foreign source and any profit thereon, can be taken out of the country (repatriated) when the non-resident sells the property. Any sums still owing under a mortgage bond over the property must be paid as the sale transaction is registered so that only the net proceeds will be repatriated. Note that such repatriation of funds is subject to South African Exchange Control Regulations which means, amongst other things, that the Reserve Bank will investigate the initial source of the non-resident’s investment in South Africa.

The total loan amount granted by a bank however remains within the bank’s discretion. A bank will generally require proof of the non-resident’s income as well as compliance with South African anti-‘money laundering’ legislation (the Financial Intelligence Centre Act), which involves the furnishing of proper identification and the submitting of certified copies of documents (such as a passport and proof of residential address).

Furthermore, if a foreigner takes up permanent residency in South Africa and signs a Declaration and Undertaking at a South African bank (namely declaring whether they are in possession of foreign funds and undertaking not to place same at the disposal of anyone resident in the Republic), they will be considered a resident for Exchange Control purposes and accordingly will only be able to freely repatriate funds within five years of their immigration. Thereafter they will be considered to be a South African resident and subject to the same regulations and limitations. Finally, the repatriation of funds will be subject to capital gains tax, which we discuss in the next paragraph.

CAN A FOREIGN COMPANY BE THE PURCHASER (OR SELLER)? Yes, a foreign company can buy and own land in South Africa. In certain instances, this would require that the purchasing register itself as an entity in South Africa and, if the shares are owned

DOES A NON-RESIDENT HAVE TO PAY INCOME TAX? Income Tax- Whilst South Africans are taxed on their worldwide income, non-residents are liable for income tax only on income accruing from a South African source and may then utilize the

The remaining 50% of the purchase price will therefore need to be made up of foreign funds that the non-resident transfers to a South African account.

double tax treaty benefit (if applicable) to avoid double taxation. For example, if a non-resident rents his property out, he will be obliged to declare such rental for primary taxation in his country of residence but will still be obliged to declare such income in South Africa as well. Thus, non-residents are also obliged to register for income tax purposes in South Africa. Capital Gains Tax (CGT)- The non-resident is liable for payment of tax on the gain made on selling the property (capital gains tax). Withholding Tax- Because some foreign buyers in the past avoided paying CGT when they sold their property, new legislation was passed which obliges any buyer of a property sold by a non-resident for R2 million or more, to retain a percentage of the purchase price and pay it to the South African Revenue Services within a maximum of 28 days of the transfer. Historic production of opens at Maynardville this summer Artscape’s 2015 Shakespeare production at Maynardville Open-Air Theatre will be the tragedy, OTHELLO, and is still as gripping today as it was when it was written 400 years ago. This summer, Shakespeare’s timeless masterpiece OTHELLO comes to life under the stars in the breath-taking natural setting of Cape Town’s historic open-air theatre. Jealousy, passion and obsession powerfully combine in this devastating domestic tragedy of OTHELLO, the Moor of Venice, who, betrayed by his close friend Iago, kills his beloved Desdemona. The play is currently being studied as a Grade 12 set work. OTHELLO is directed by Fred Abrahamse with set and costume designs by Marcel Meyer, lighting design by Faheem Bardien, original music score by Charl-Johan Lingenfelder. Abrahamse and Meyer will bring their celebrated visual flair to this production featuring a company of Cape Town’s most exciting young classical actors. In Maynardville’s almost 60 year history, Othello has only been presented three times. The first production was directed by Leonard Schach in 1970 and starred visiting British actor, Bernard Brown as Othello. The play was next staged in 1982 in a highly controversial production starring British acting legend, Sir Robert Stephens as Othello under Roy Sargeant’s direction and most recently Keith Grenville’s 2001 staging starred British born Nigerian actor Hakeem Kae-Kazim as Othello.

WE’VE BEEN TO CHALLENGES CONVENTIONS WITH TWO SA FIRSTS SA’s First Cognac Brand and the World’s First 30-year old Commercially Available Potstill Brandy KWV, home of the World’s Best Brandy, today unveiled SA’s first and only XO Cognac produced under a South African brand name, the KWV Héritage XO Cognac, and KWV Nexus 30 year old brandy, the world’s first commercially available 30 year old brandy containing potstill up to 42 years old. According to KWV’s Marketing Director, Peadar Hegarty, KWV is challenging the conventions of the industry with these two additions to its luxury product range. “Cognac can only be produced in Western France and verification of its authenticity is taken very seriously, protected by an origin appellation, meaning that in order for the blend to qualify as a cognac grapes must be sourced and the product must be bottled and matured in the Cognac region in France,” he explains. For KWV’s XO Cognac, KWV formed a collaborative partnership with the French House of Maison Charpentier* and developed KWV Héritage XO, created by KWV’s award winning Master Distiller Pieter de Bod who developed the exceptional blend in his brandy cellar in Paarl.

He adds that KWV XO is the perfect blend, double distilled in traditional copper stills and matured in French oak barrels, testament to brilliant craftsmanship. Nexus the world’s first 30-year old commercially available potstill brandy The KWV Nexus 30-year old is an exceptional potstill brandy, handcrafted in small batches at the world renowned KWV cellars in Paarl using a blend ranging in age from 30 to 42 years old. “Retailing at a recommended price of R23,000 Nexus is for those who want to celebrate those finish great moments with an exceptional brandy, that is personalised on order, from our retail partners,” says Hegarty. Aptly, the Nexus name means the highest point of a connection. “It links our KWV journey to finish great, representing the pinnacle of our brandy journey, which begins with our 3 year old,” he adds. “KWV differentiates itself in the spirits industry in offering such a clearly signposted range of aged potstills. Our Master Distiller, Pieter de Bod, oversees each step to ensure the product is exquisitely crafted so that uncompromised purity and handcrafted quality is captured in every drop.” de Bod says that during the first stage of maturation clear Potstill spirit absorbs the characteristic colour of the oak and develops its flavours and bouquets (the scent of oak, warm vanilla and the rich aromas brought out during toasting).

“Pieter chose from 20 of the finest “Extra Old” cognacs from the Petite Champagne and Grande Champagne regions in France, aged between 12 and 30 years, making it one of the oldest blends available worldwide and earning this Cognac its prestigious Heritage XO distinction,” says Hegarty.

At the culmination of its journey KWV Nexus 30 reaches its apogee, the climax of its development, the ultimate expression of the Master Distiller. In fact KWV Nexus contains brandy up to 42-yearold blends to ensure that this represents a product experience of unrivalled excellence.

He recalls the moment, saying that it was like watching a master pianist. “Pieter tasted each one, picked up the notes, then carefully chose the most precious blend, and our XO Héritage was born - a perfect finish great moment.”

KWV Nexus brandy is suspended in the orb of an exquisite hand-blown bottle crafted by internationally acclaimed glass artist, David Reade. Each individually crafted bottle is sealed with a handmade Baltic Amber stone, a unique gem with origins that can be traced to tree resins going back some 50 million years and set in copper by award-winning jewellery designer Maike Valcarcel.

de Bod then travelled to France for the blending and maturation process. Cognacs from the sought after Petit Champagne area are characterized by their elegance and Master Distiller De Bod says that the artisans at Maison Charpentier, which was founded in 1895, are true masters of their craft, distilling their cognac on site in small batches, which are then carefully nurtured throughout the maturation process in French Oak barrels. He points out that this is significantly different from the mass produced mainstream brands. Hegarty says that KWV has a long tradition of crafting the finest brandies in the world. “The unique combination of the best blends from the Cognac province and Pieter’s craft is what inspired our KWV Master Distiller to blend the finest on offer from Maison Charpentier with the creation of this extraordinary KWV Héritage XO.”

They can also watch the antics of our rockhopper penguins as they dash through the water and enjoy their outside pool. The area is themed as “a Day at the Beach” and comes complete with a large sandpit for great sandcastle building. All of this while they learn about our oceans and the wonderful animals that live in them. The Aquarium offers qualified divers the opportunity to dive in the I&J Predator Exhibit with ragged-tooth sharks, turtles and shoals of other predatory fishes. For divers with an advanced qualification, diving in the Kelp Forest Exhibit, surrounded by a multitude of fish, is a “must-do” dive. Dive bookings are essential and can be done by emailing dive@aquarium.co.za or online at www.aquarium.co.za. The Two Oceans Aquarium’s onsite restaurant, Shoreline Café offers patrons wholesome, well-priced and delicious fare. With its dedicated children’s play area, fast service and spectacular view of Table Mountain and the yacht marina, it provides an ideal spot for families to grab a quick bite or to sit back and relax after an exciting visit to the Aquarium. Shoreline Cafe is accessible without entering the Aquarium and is open from 09:00 until 18:00 daily. The Aquarium Shop has a wide range of gifts and souvenirs. From t-shirts to soft toys, there’s a gift for everyone. fine i beer

Since fine dining and fine beer go hand in hand, we have selected two fabulous restaurants who serve not only great food but Grolsch Premium Lager too. Who could ask for more? ASOKA

N

estled within an elegant Victorian town house beneath Table Mountain and Lions Head, on the trendy bustling Kloof Street, Asoka is a stylish and intimate lounge that emanates comfort and relaxation. Upon entry, one senses that the evening is set to be enjoyed. Relish freshly made cocktails at the well-stocked bar, a romantic candle lit dinner under the open roof courtyard, sundowners on the deck, or in a cosy corner by the fire. The ancient olive tree, affectionately know as the Dharma Tree, continues to thrive amidst Feng-Shui design principles using the elements of fire, water, copper and wood, creating a mystical and enchanting ambience. The menu is a delightful fusion of Asian flavours and fragrances. The a la carte menu offers an array of carefully prepared dishes to suit all tastes, including a variety of vegetarian choices. 68 Kloof Street, Gardens, Cape Town • 021 422 0909 www.asokabar.co.za

DADDY LONG LEGS

S

taying in the Daddy Long Legs Independent Travellers Hotel is like being part of an interactive art exhibition. The thirteen-room Art Hotel is quite unlike anything else in South Africa. Not only is each room uniquely decorated by an artist, poet, photographer, designer or musician, but, they were afforded complete freedom to interpret the space as they pleased, resulting in a collection of hotel rooms that are an adventurous, humorous (and sometimes ironic) representation of Cape Town’s contemporary cultural landscape. Daddy Long Legs is a dream project and yet creative expression has not diluted the necessity for comfort and rest. “It’s about funky, affordable accommodation”, says owner, Jody Aufrichtig. He adds that Daddy Long Legs is, “ a place where you can meet people, have fun whilst you are at it, and – get an awesome night’s rest. Staying at a Daddy Long Legs gives you the opportunity to absorb the creative spirit of Cape Town without leaving your room, so just lie back and enjoy!” The communal bar / lounge area is the perfect spot to meet fellow travellers and visiting locals. Relax, order a drink and sit on the balcony to take in the vibrant atmosphere of Long Street; Cape Town’s creative and eccentric heart. 134 Long Street , Cape Town • 021 422 3074 reservations@daddylonglegs.co.za www.daddylonglegs.co.za/arthotel

BLOEMENDAL RESTAURANT MEDIEVAL NIGHTS Bloemendal Restaurant is positioned on top of one of the highest hills in the Northern Suburbs. With a panoramic view of 270° the Cape Peninsula, you are sure to experience the best sunset moments ever... On arrival to the Medieval Night experience guest will be helped by the cavaliers (waitrons) to a glass of sweet wine or juice and help them to get dressed in the proper medieval gear, they will no longer be known as guests but Lords and ladies. All the lords and ladies will then have a chance to get a drink, mingle before the proceedings starts. No glasses are allowed. The court Jester will brief the king and queen in advance before he enters the court and introduce himself to the “peasants” who are visiting the kingdom. In good faith they will obey and respect the chosen king and queen. Whilst explaining the rules the Jester will make a few jokes and throw the peasants (lords and ladies behaving badly or not listening) into the dungeon or stocks. When the rules are done starters will be served and the Jester will leave the venue until everyone has had starters. The jester will return after starters have been served and then proceed. If there are speeches it is preferred that it is to be done after starters to get all the formal proceedings done as the medieval party is about letting your hair down and enjoying your selves. After that the King and Queen will have a chance to throw peasants

into the dungeons, have them sing songs for them and congratulate Lords and Ladies who have impressed them so far by drowning them in a goblet of wine. We will then move on to main course and it is tradition that before main course is served the king and queen will be entertained by each table performing a song, the table who does this the best will receive main course first. The Jester will once again leave the court. Once main course is finished the Jester will return and over throw the kingdom so that the dance floor can be opened. an impromptu party in the mouth, whilst discovering an array of estate wines on offer at this legendary Stellenbosch Estate. This decadent treat costs R75 per person and comprises four exquisite cupcakes matched with a specific Delheim wine. First up to fulfill that ‘fairies dancing on the tongue’ feeling is Rooibos Cupcake infused with lemon and topped with a cream cheese and honey icing, which is paired with the Delheim Unwooded Chardonnay for a fun, fruity and fresh start. The wine’s vibrant citrus aromas and mineral undertones cut through and complement the sweeter taste profile of the confection and uplift the subtle Rooibos nuances. Next up is the exotic Pomegranate Cupcake matched with the ever-popular Delheim Pinotage Rosé. The strawberry and raspberry kisses combined with the perfumed floral notes in the wine pair well and accentuate the grenadine flavoured, ‘wish-i-could-lick-the-bowl’ cream cheese icing. A traditional African Makataan Cupcake festooned with makataan (wild melon) syrup icing shares the spotlight with the Delheim Chardonnay Sur Lie. The citrus, stone fruit and mineral notes of the wine add a gentle, refreshing twist to the melon’s tropical-tinted and somewhat tart taste. It is a superb crowd-pleasing combo with flavours that merge and mellow with subtle sweetness. The tasting ends on decadent high with Pumpkin Cupcake paired with the Delheim Pinotage. This mouthwatering morsel is made with farm grown pumpkin, spiced up with star anise, cinnamon and nutmeg and topped with pickled pumpkin. Exuding black cherry, plum and red berry fruit backed by dark chocolate and floral notes, the wine peaks at mid-palate and then fades to the rear to allow the distinct flavor of the cupcake to return for the grand finale. The Delheim Cupcake & Wine Pairing is on offer seven days a week at the tasting room – between 9:00 and 16:30 – and pre-bookings are essential. A LOCAL PRIDE AQUILA CREATES IMPACT developed youth by sponsoring the town’s rugby, cricket and soccer teams. Furthermore, Derman has donated approximately ten blankets over the past 10 years, providing at least 1 blanket to almost every person in the town. The town was built around a railway servicing plant that closed down in the 1980s, leaving 97% unemployment amongst the approximately 12 000 previously disadvantaged residents. 14 years ago, Searl Derman (the owner and founder of Aquila) noticed starving residents cutting rotten, maggot infested meat from a 3 week old horse carcass, and he made it his personal goal to resurrect the town. At that stage, the biggest seller in the local supermarket was “pets mince”, and it was not uncommon to see mothers holding their babies, standing outside their shacks to catch the first rays of sunlight, trying to stay warm. Aquila had to get involved!

Aquila Private Game Reserve has been honoured to be awarded the prestigious Imvelo Economic Large Impact award. The Lilizela Imvelo Awards recognise and celebrate tourism and hospitality businesses that practice exemplary responsible, sustainable and fair business practices. Imvelo means ‘nature’ in South Africa’s Nguni languages. The Award identifies and rewards tourism and hospitality businesses that make measurable, persistent contributions to responsible, sustainable and fair tourism, setting an example to other tourism business both in South Africa and around the world. Speaking at the Lilizela Tourism Awards in Johannesburg recently, Derek Hanekom (Minister of Tourism), who presented the Award, said South Africa’s reputation as a world-class tourism destination continued to grow. The Lilizela Awards recognise and reward tourism players and businesses who work passionately and with pride to deliver a world class product and service and whose delivery grows South Africa’s global destination competitiveness. Aquila Private Game Reserve is proud to be a part of growing the South African economy and creating jobs. Aquila Private Game Reserve focuses most of its social upliftment, job creation, skills development, sustainable charity programmes and empowerment efforts in the previously “doomed” and forgotten town of Touws River which is situated 12kms from Aquila, where Aquila’s workforce resides. Owner of Aquila Searl Derman has always been committed to uplifting the town of Touws River, ever since hearing about the withdrawal of the railway from the town in the 1980’s. This left massive unemployment of approximately 97% of a town of 9000 people. Derman has been recognised as ‘Champion of the Poor’ by the press and has been featured on Carte Blanche and Fokus for his award winning social upliftment and conservation efforts that have sustained the town. These include; a soup kitchen that has swopped food for litter and feeds previously disadvantaged children up to 12,000 meals per month. By cleaning the town, the recycled litter is sold, and the funds are used to pay for the school teachers. Derman continues to support the old age home and

22

l Hello Cape Town January 2015

We are proud to say that over the past 14 years, Aquila has paid an exceptional amount in salaries, which has empowered the locals and created flourishing primary, secondary and tertiary small businesses. Aquila is the largest employer in the area with approximately 280 permanent staff members. Over 400 staff (including temporary staff) have been on our monthly payroll. As one person feeds approximately 9 people in the community, approximately 30% of Touws River is directly dependant on Aquila’s salaries. The Xenephobic-causing influx of African Nationals to De Doorns has resulted in the potential loss of + 600 temporary grape picking jobs and the final completion of the 44MW solar plant will leave more families hungry and cold. Fortunately Aquila has broken ground building an additional hotel and spa, which should lessen the critical situation for the community. We believe that we have resurrected the town of Touws River, and although it still faces challenges, we hope that Aquila’s and Touws River’s successes will jointly grow from strength to strength. Set in the pristine Southern Karoo Highlands against a backdrop of dramatic mountains, the Aquila Private Game Reserve offers an exciting taste of real Africa just two short hours from Cape Town by road. Aquila is home to an enormous variety of game, including the Big 5 -- elephant, rhino, lion, buffalo and leopard -- giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, many different antelope, baboons, jackal, bateared foxes, hippos and crocodiles. And many migratory birds stop en route at Aquila’s own wetland. Two- to three-hour game drives are a perfect way to see the animals (in four-wheel-drive vehicles, quad bikes or on horseback). Aquila Private Game Reserve won the award in the category, with the V&A Waterfront who were the runner-up.

TANZANITE The Diamond Works Institute extends its expertise in delineation of Tanzanite in our unique Tanzanite Boutique. This rare stone represents the essence of Africa, and we whisper the tales of this stone’s journey from the ground to the showroom. Tanzanite is noted for its remarkably strong trichroism; appearing alternately sapphire blue, violet and burgundy depending on crystal orientation. This blue mystical gem has earned a reputation for possessing magical powers. It is thought that it has the power to elevate the bearer’s mood and release them from poor habits or addictions. It is also believed, that tanzanite is able to restore spiritual balance and good fortune. Our Cape Town facility demonstrates the science of tanzanite polishing and the craft of transforming a tanzanite crystal to a cut stone.

WEEKEND SCENE GREAT GATHERINGS

The New Treetop Canopy Walkway In celebration of its Centenary (1913- 2013), Kirstenbosch botanical gardens chose to add this spectacular project that would be a unique and permanent feature to the venue. This special walkway is a perfect means to mark the occasion. It was built purely from bequest money which has been left to Kirstenbosch by numerous donors, but predominantly Mary Mullins. It is also a fantastic opportunity to take people into the treetops, a place with a distinctive ecology that is generally inaccessible. From here people can experience the forest from high above the ground and also see birds and other animals that are generally elusive. One can experience an entirely new world of tree dynamics - how the treetops move in the wind and how the crowns of the trees interact with one another. The walkway then bursts through and above the canopy, giving you an impression of what it is like to be above the forest. At this point, the walkway provides spectacular 360 degree vistas comprising of Cape Town and the surrounding majestic mountain slopes. Adding to the exceptionality of this modern feature is the fact that the walkway is fully wheelchair accessible. The design of the walkway is envisaged as a sinuous, lightweight, non-intrusive steel structure, which supports a slatted timber deck, and snakes its way into, through and over the ever-changing tree canopy. The structure, comprising ribs and a structural spine, inspired by a snake’s, is supported on slender steel columns intertwined with creepers. On site, the pieces were bolted together and mounted on top of long columns much like a giant mechanic set. The walkway takes advantage of the sloping ground and starts and ends within the arboretum, so there is almost no visual impact from the lawns and walks in the garden. There are no mechanical or electrical aspects to the walk and the gentle gradients will easily raise visitors to over 11 meters above ground and is about a 130 meters long. There is no extra charge for this added feature. A normal garden entry ticket is all that is required.

Opening/Closing times of the garden: September to March 08h00am -19h00pm, and from April to August 08:00-18:00 every day.

WILDLIFE ALL YEAR AROUND ELEPHANT RIDES

CAPE FUR SEAL

Join the southern-most elephants in the world at Knysna Elephant Park. Where a resident family of African elephants and world-class guides will unravel the sad and mystical story of the Knysna forest elephants… The Park offers a rare and exciting opportunity to get close to these gentle giants, who live in a controlled, free-range environment in the heart of the famous Garden Route.

Situated only 8 nautical miles (about 16km) from Simon’s Town, Seal Island is home to 75,000 Cape Fur Seals, 24 different bird species and the hunting ground of the Great White Shark. All year round we often encounter Dolphins, Humpback whales and Brydes whales. From July to November the Southern Right whales are plentiful in the bay and you can be assured of a sighting.

Their elephants are orphans rescued from culling operations. They play a vital role in closing the gap between man and animal, allowing us to better understand the plight of the African Elephant and that of their peers in the Knysna Forest. Visitors leave the park with a sense of awe for these magnificent animals – they’ve been ‘touched by an elephant.’ In order to cater for all preferences they have a range of inspiring elephant experiences: • Daily Tours provide for a shorter experience of meeting, feeding and interacting with the gentle giants. • Elephant Back Rides and Walks allow for longer and more personal interaction. • Exclusive Sunrise/Sunset Safaris and Sundowner Safaris are the private and intimate encounters. • Sleeping with the Elephants in the unique Elephant Lodge is the ultimate experience where you get to spend all day and all night soaking up all the sights, sounds and delights of the elephant world! Tel: +27 (0)44 532 7732 www.knysnaelephantpark.co.za SHARK CAGE DIVING Great white sharks are the apex predators of our oceans and Cape Town is one of the shark cage diving capitals of the world. Sharks are iconic and magnificent creatures. Experience a great white shark up close and personal with a shark diving or shark viewing tour (you don’t have to get in the cage!) and you do not need a scuba diving certificate to shark cage dive. Great White Shark, Cage Diving takes place from April to September in False Bay (departs from Simon’s Town) and all year round from Gansbaai (2 hours from Cape Town).

l Hello Cape Town January 2015

During the winter months the Great White Sharks are extremely active around the island and we enjoy many sightings and often witness natural predations. The main breeding season for the Cape Fur Seal is November and December when almost 20 000 pups are born. The majority of the seals on Duiker Island, out of Hout Bay Harbour, are males waiting out their time until they reach the right breeding age, which is between the ages of 8 to 12 years depending on their size. Duiker Island is not a breeding colony as the sea can get very rough and the pups get swept off. The island is most densely populated from January through March due to the seals moulting. During this period they do not go off in search of food but rely on fats they have stored in their blubber. BIG 5 SAFARI The phrase Big Five game was coined by white hunters and refers to the five most difficult animals in Africa to hunt on foot. The collection consists of the lion, African elephant, Cape buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros. African Big Five Game Species: African bush elephant (Loxodontaafricana): The African elephant is a very large herbivore having thick, almost hairless skin, a long, flexible, prehensile trunk, upper incisors forming long curved tusks of ivory, and large, fan-shaped ears. There are two distinct species of African

elephant: African forest elephant (Loxodontacyclotis) and the African bush elephant (Loxodontaafricana). Black rhinoceros (Dicerosbicornis):The black rhinoceros is a large, thick-skinned herbivore having one or two upright horns on the nasal bridge. Rhinoceros may refer to either black or white rhinoceros. African cape buffalo (Synceruscaffer): The African or cape buffalo is a large horned bovid. Buffalo are sometimes reported to kill more people in Africa than any other animal, although the same claim is also made of hippos and crocodiles. It is considered the most dangerous of the Big Five, reportedly causing the most hunter deaths, with wounded animals reported to ambush and attack pursuers. Lion (Pantheraleo): The lion is a large carnivorous feline of Africa and northwest India, having a short, tawny coat, a tufted tail, and, in the male, a heavy mane around the neck and shoulders. A lion may attack without provocation, and is considered by many to be the best of the Big Five. Lions habituate the savanna where tall grasses, shrubs and bushes obscure and provide them cover and camouflage. This thick undergrowth is commonly referred to as jess. As lions are ambush hunters, they use this natural cover to stalk close as possible before making a final charge to catch their prey. Lions do not generally avoid confrontation, but will usually face the challenger. Lions are unpredictable and may charge when sufficiently annoyed or confronted by danger. Leopard (Pantherapardus): The leopard is a large, carnivorous feline having either tawny fur with dark rosette-like markings or black fur. They are wary of humans and will take flight in the face of danger. The leopard is solitary by nature, and is most active between sunset and sunrise, although it may hunt during the day in some areas. Leopards can be found in

the savanna grasslands, brush land and forested areas in Africa. The male leopard is less than half the size of a male lion. The leopard is the smallest of the big cats, and rarely exceeds 200 lb (91 kg). A visit to a South African reserve will, most likely, allow seeing not only the big 5 but other habitants of the African bush. Although the stock will be different between various reserves you’ll be able to watch: Giraffes, Elands, Springbok, Hippopotamus and Zebras. CAPE PENINSULA BABOONS The Baboon Matters Trust comprises a handful of dedicated volunteers who are at the forefront of baboon conservation in South Africa. The goals of the trust include raising awareness for the plight of baboons as well as education and training so that sustainable solutions can be found for areas of conflict between man and baboon. On a practical level the trust makes provision for the rescue and care of injured or sick baboons, and aims to support rehabilitation centres that focus their attention on baboons. Cape Species: The Chacma Baboon (Papioursinus), also known as the Cape Baboon, is, like all other baboons, from the Old World monkey family. With a body length of up to 115 cm and a weight from 15 to 31 kg, it is among the largest and heaviest baboon species. The Chacma is generally dark brown to gray in color, with a patch of rough hair on the nape of its neck. Unlike the northern baboon species (the Guinea, Hamadryas, and Olive Baboons), Chacma males do not have a mane. Perhaps the most distinctive feature of this baboon is its long, downward sloping face. Males can have canine teeth as long as 2 inches (longer than a lion’s canine teeth). Baboons are sexually dimorphic, males being considerably larger than females. The Chacma Baboon is found in southern Africa, ranging from South Africa north to Angola, Zambia, and Mozambique. Size and color vary within that range. Chacmas usually live in social groups composed of multiple adult males, adult females, and their offspring. Occasionally, however, very small groups form that include only a single adult male and several adult females. Chacma troops are characterized by a dominance hierarchy. Female ranking within the troop is inherited through the mother and remains quite fixed, while male ranking is tenuous and changes often. Chacmas are unusual among baboons in that neither males nor females form strong relationships with members of the same sex. Instead, the strongest social bonds are often between unrelated adult males and females. (Wikipedia) BOULDERS BEACH PENGUINS A visit to the famous Boulders Beach penguins should be part of every Cape Town itinerary. The penguins from this growing colony allow for close encounters with these famous sea birds - and most tourists fall helplessly in love with them. The story of the African penguins at Boulders Beach is one of remarkable urban colonization, but the species as a whole faces many threats and these aquatic flightless birds are listed as endangered. The story of the penguin colony in Cape Town started in 1983 when a pair was spotted on Foxy Beach at Boulders. Since then the colony has grown rapidly and now totals about 3 000 Boulders Beach penguins. The birds came to False Bay from Dyer Island after the reduction in commercial pelagic trawling, which has increased the supply of pilchards and anchovy part of the penguins’ diet. Boulders Beach is located in Simon’s Town, just over the hilly peninsula from Cape Town. It’s easily accessible by bus, car, taxi or train.

SHOPPING PRECIOUS STONES Southern Africa is often considered the “gemstone capital of the world” as almost half of the world’s gemstones are found in this part of the world. While some may only think of gemstones as the fabulous and expensive varieties like Diamonds and Tanzanite, there are also many other beautiful and unusual gemstones that are associated with Southern Africa – like Tiger’s Eye, Rose Quartz, Amethyst, Pietersite, Malachite, Verdite, Blue lace Agate, Sodalite, and many more. One of the most popular and convenient places to experience the amazing beauty and variety of gemstones that are found and crafted locally is right here in the V&A Waterfront at the popular Scratch Patch and Mineral World in Dock Road next to the parking garage, and just down from the Two Oceans Aquarium. The Scratch Patch has become worldfamous as a place where you can have loads of fun “scratching” for your favourite gemstones from hundreds of thousands of tumble-polished stones that quite literally cover the floor. This is a truly original concept that has been copied in other parts of the world. According to how many gemstones you wish to take home, visitors have a choice from a small bag to a large cup container. At the Mineral World factory shop you can see an incredible range of gemstone items including stone carvings and other “art” pieces; high-quality “investment” gems (like Tanzanite and Diamonds); jewellery of all kinds; and lots of inexpensive gemstone items that make ideal take-home-gifts. You will also discover a large range of mineral specimens, rough gemstone pieces, and fossils that will fascinate you and bring out the geologist in you! Besides the outlet at the V&A Waterfront, there are also Scratch Patch/Mineral World branches at Simon’s Town (Dido Valley Road, and also the site of the Topstones tumble-polishing and gem-crafting factory), and at the West Coast Ostrich Farm (Van Schoorsdrif Road, just off the N7). So, make sure that you discover the magic of gemstones! Scratch Patch & Mineral World, 1 Dock Road (next to the parking garage and near the Aquarium). Tel 021 419 9429.

OSTRICH LEATHER & MOHAIR Ostrich leather is the result of tanning skins taken from African ostriches farmed for their feathers, skin and meat. The leather is distinctive for its pattern of bumps or vacant quill follicles, ranged across a smooth field in varying densities. It requires an intricate, specialised and expensive

production process making it costly as well as beautiful. Although the first commercial farming began in South Africa in 1850, the industry collapsed after World War I and the drop in demand for the feathers for fashionable hats and military uniforms. Other products were marketed, with each success battered by world events and droughts until now, when ostrich skin is globally available and seen as a luxury item in highend demand. Leather came late in the story of ostrich farming but after a tannery was set up onsite, it went on to make an impact in European haute couture and in the U.S. for cowboy boots. Availability was artificially limited when ostrich leather was subject to a cartel monopoly through trade sanctions, and single export and distribution channels until the end of apartheid in 1993. After that and other factors, the South African government began to export stock allowing other countries to have their own ranches. Although wider production resulted in competition and lower prices, Klein Karoo Group remains the leading global producer. Today the industry is driven mostly by the leather and the meat, which is exported to all parts of the world. South Africa produces over 60% of the world’s ostriches and also has a distinct quality edge in the leather tanning process. Eleven years ago, Charles and Melony Biggs were farming ostrich, sheep and goats in the Graaff Reinet area in the Karoo. At first they exported skins to people he had met in the USA, where he had previously farmed ostrich for 4 years. They learned a lot in that time abroad, one thing being what we in South Africa had to offer and show off to the world in terms of leadership in Ostrich and Mohair.

Always close, Always fresh, Always convenient.

That’s why I love my SPAR!

They started to seek for local manufacturers and work together with designers to present a classic collection that also presents a freshness and elegancy. In 2000, Karoo Classics opened its doors in Stellenbosch: “We had 30 handbags and six belts in stock, but 100% faith in the fantastic natural products made from ostrich leather and mohair”, says Charles. From the very beginning a policy of Proudly South Africa was adopted. They spent months looking for and visiting factories all over South Africa. The criteria were: simply, high quality at a reasonable price. Today they have a wonderful group of suppliers, from big factories to family businesses and individuals. In 2003, Karoo Classics opened in Cape Town and five years later in Franschhoek. Today they have the world’s largest selection of ostrich leather goods, carrying over 1000 handbags alone. Ostrich leather and Mohair products can be found at Karoo Classics. See their ad in our Handmade Section. Hello Cape Town January 2015 l

The southern tip of the African continent is the meeting place of two mighty and bountiful oceans, the Indian and the Atlantic. The Two Oceans Aquarium is ideally positioned to showcase the incredible diversity of marine life found in these two oceans. The Aquarium holds over 3000 living sea animals, including sharks, fishes, turtles and penguins can be seen in this spectacular underwater nature reserve.

After you have fallen in love with the penguins head to the secluded Boulders Beach and take a swim in the comparatively warm waters of the False Bay. This beach is ideal for kids as immense boulders shelter the cove from currents, wind and large waves - but please always take care. Also, don’t touch or feed the penguins. They might look cute and cuddly but their beaks are as sharp as razors and if they feel threatened they have no qualms about nipping the odd finger or nose.

Operating Hours: First car up 16 Sept to 30 Apr: 8:00 and 1 May to 15 Sept: 8:30. Last car down varies with sunset times but not before 17:00. Tel: 021 424 0015 www.tablemountain.net KIRSTENBOSCH

The most beautiful garden in Africa. Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is acclaimed as one of the great botanic gardens of the world. Few gardens can match the sheer grandeur of the setting of Kirstenbosch, against the eastern slopes of Cape Town’s Table Mountain. The Garden covers 36 hectares in a 528 hectare estate that contains protected mountainside supporting natural forest and fynbos along with a variety of animals and birds. Kirstenbosch lies in the heart of the Cape Floristic Region, also known as the Cape Floral Kingdom. In 2004 the Cape Floristic Region, including Kirstenbosch, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Rich in cultural and natural heritage this destinations includes the famous Cape Point. Due to the variety of wildlife that occurs here it is the only section of the Table Mountain National Park that is fenced and visitors should look out for Eland, Red Hartebeest, Bontebok and Zebra. Be sure to visit the Buffelsfontein Visitor Centre that showcases all the plants and animals to look out for in a particular season and is full of informative signage. This is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and offers hiking, surfing, angling, picnicking, beaching and cycling opportunities against the spectacular backdrop of the mountains and coastline of the most south western point in Africa. Cape Point offers visitors excellent viewing opportunities from the two lighthouses that adorn the point – one still functional, informative interpretive signage that traces the cultural and natural history of the Point. The lighthouse is accessible by foot or you can catch the Flying Dutchman funicular to the top.

Not sure where to go for a wine route adventure? It all depends on how much time you have and how much of day - or week you’d like to make of it. For those with very little time, you’ll be happy to know that Cape Town’s CBD presents a host of wine bars that will guide you through a virtual wine tasting of practically any estate you choose. But for those who do have some time... The "Hello Winelands" full guide to all the wine estates and wineries can be obtained at the Cape Tourism outlets in the city, at the airport, on table mountain, in Kirstenbosch and Blouberg.

CONSTANTIA VALLEY Constantia Valley is the wine route at the heart of the Mother City (or at least a little to the left of it). This is the oldest wine-growing area in Southern Africa and stretches from Wynberg hill in the north, to the Silvermine mountains (the Tokai area) in the south. The ten wine cellars on the route boast a winemaking history dating back to 1685. Around the peninsula, not a part on the Constantia Valley, but still close enough, there are a few more award winning wine estate to be explored. For more info: Tel: 021 762 8769, www.constantiavalley.com DURBANVILLE WINE ROUTE Nestled in the Tygerberg Hills, a mere 20 minutes’ drive from Cape Town, lies the Durbanville Wine Valley. With its hectares of flourishing vineyards, award winning wines and hospitable atmosphere. The Durbanville Wine Valley consists of twelve wineries, each offering the finest in wines, and complemented with some of the best fine dining restaurants and intimate country kitchens in the region. For more info: www.durbanvillewine.co.za FRANSCHHOEK WINE ROUTE

Nestled between towering mountains in the beautiful Cape winelands lies the magnificent Franschhoek Valley. This is the food and wine heartland of the country, where splendid wines are grown and our top chefs create international cuisine. Here breath-taking scenery, warm hospitality, world class cuisine and the finest wines all combine to create lasting memories. Spectacular vineyards cover these mountain slopes settled more than

300 years ago by the Huguenots, who brought with them their age-old French wine and food culture. This is a valley rich in history centred around a picturesque village of friendly, welcoming people. For more info: Tel: 021 876 3603, www.franschhoek.org.za PAARL WINE ROUTE Paarl offers historical charm, culture, architectural heritage, wine and fruit farms, breath-taking scenery and many cycling and nature trails. The magnificent countryside, good wines and friendly people welcome you to a town where a feeling of tranquillity still transcends modern day living. The Paarl Wine Route offers visitors a diverse wine and country living experience. From the large international wine companies to the small micro-producers who share the passion to produce quality wines with a sense of place to give pleasure to the lovers of wine. For more info: Tel: 021 872 0860 www.paarlonline.com or www.paarlwine.co.za ROBERTSON WINE ROUTE Member wineries from Ashton, Bonnievale, McGregor and Robertson work closely to bring visitors the most memorable wine tourism experiences, notably their renowned wine festivals: Wacky Wine Weekend in June (www. wackywineweekend.com), Robertson Slow in August (www.robertsonslow. com) and Robertson Wine on the River in October (www.wineonriver.com). For more info: Tel: 023 626 3167 www.robertsonwinevalley.com

more than 200 wine and grape producers within the boundaries of the Stellenbosch Wine of Origin classification. The Wine Route is divided into five sub-routes for a convenient exploration but you are welcome to be creative and target the wineries by any classification or taste. Daily wine tasting, cellar tours and sales are offered at most cellars and many of these have restaurant and picnic facilities. Some cellars offer tasting by appointment only.

For more info: Tel: 021 883 3584 www.wineroute.co.za WELLINGTON WINE ROUTE Halfway between the bright lights of Cape Town and the statuesque mountains of the Western Cape, lies the hidden valley of Wellington, full of surprises and variety, heart and soul. The Berg river flows along the western border with two smaller streams, the Spruit and Kromme and the mighty Hawequas stands guard on the eastern side. The Bainskloof Pass, built by the famous Scot, Andrew Geddes Bain was (before Du Toitskloof Pass) the only gateway to the north. More French people settled here than anywhere else in the Cape and the valley was initially called Val du Charron – valley of the wagonmakers, the last outpost before travellers, pioneers and adventurers attempted the arduous journey into the hinterland with their oxen and their wagons.

STELLENBOSCH WINE ROUTES The Stellenbosch Wine Route is the first and the largest in South Africa and all the estates along the route are within a 12km radius of the town. It is arguably the country´s most famous, and includes

Nando’s: the PERi-PERi heart of South African food You might’ve seen it elsewhere. London. New York. Melbourne. Singapore. And hopefully you’ve tasted it too. But this is it: the motherland. Nando’s has its roots in South Africa (as we never tire of telling people) and has become one of the country’s most celebrated and delicious exports. For good reason, too. Nando’s is all about delectable chicken, flame-grilled to perfection and infused with our trademark PERi-PERi flavour. We grill our chicken over an open fire, since we figure our ancestors knew what they were doing. Seriously though, there’s nothing like a flame to bring out the succulent, smokey flavours in a piece of chicken. Of course, flame-grilled food is also good for those arteries. Our PERi-PERi sauces also work to make our meals healthier. It’s true. Ask the academics. In a recent study by the British Journal of Nutrition, peri-peri was found to lower the glycaemic index of food. This means that you get an extra health bang for your buck with every Nando’s bite. To say nothing of the flavour. (Actually, we say quite a lot about the flavour.) And when you’re looking for the best possible side to accompany your chicken-shaped piece of goodness, look no further than our veggie options. Salads, PERi spinach, coleslaw, roast veg and flame-grilled mielies (what we South Africans call corn – learn it now) are all available, as are chips (which, really, you should try – everything in moderation, including moderation), potato wedges and spicy rice. Our Vitality Meal has been endorsed by one of the country’s leading health bodies and is specifically tailored for those waistline watchers. Nando’s offers something for everyone, which is a good thing considering the diversity of the South African people – let alone the 30 countries around the world where you can find us. Ultimately, it’s the good stuff: good for your belly and good for your body.
