Steyn City is thrilled to announce the launch of the Steyn City Hotel by Saxon which has been accepted as one of the Leading Hotels of the World (LHW).
s it just me, or was the third term incredibly intense? As we kick off the celebratory season of year-end events and gatherings, I hope that the goals you’ve set for yourself at the beginning of the year are now bearing fruit and that you can see the change that many of the challenges you were faced with this year, have brought along. As the saying goes: If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you.
To help you ease into this season of celebrations, we’ve dedicated this issue to the joys of chiming glasses, year-end speeches and rewards, whether it’s in the form of a year-end retreat, a year-end event, a fun family getaway or a rewards function. In our Festive Edition, we feature destinations fit for the perfect bleisure trip - whether business is the focus with a hint of leisure in between, or the other way around. Of course, as per usual, we also share with you some of the latest attractions in our beautiful country’s main cities, as well as must-visit gems that have stood the test of time. And, since it is time to get into the groove of celebrating, we also have two very exciting travel competitions for you to enter!
Somehow, it feels as if October has brought us to the tip of the mountain and now, we have a choice: Will we be brave and paraglide down to the foot of the mountain, enjoying the views, or will we cautiously climb down as we spot rare flora? Either way, be sure to take a moment to celebrate. Life is full and busy and we need to make time to show our appreciation towards others, celebrate their (and our own) achievements and look back on a year filled with people, places, events and stories that challenged us and helped us grow; change.
I hope October brings blooms of blessing to your door and that November will sprinkle joy as we celebrate the highs (and also the lessons of the lows) of 2024. And, I hope that you can reflect on the past year’s achievements and continue to build on it.

For young Marc Lottering, comedy was the furthest thing from his mind when it came to career choices. Today, he’s been entertaining local and international audiences with his funny stories for the past 27 years and he is one of South Africa’s top comedians.
“…I always enjoyed making people feel absolutely comfortable,” Marc says. “You know, if there was a situation that I felt was a little bit tense, I would always try to defuse that situation with a funny story, or by making it light and funny. So, that has always been part of who I am.”
It was only after high school that he realised he enjoyed telling funny stories and to this day, he prefers being referred to as a funny storyteller, rather than a comedian. “I’d always thought that title - comedian - was so challenging. I’d much rather just be a funny storyteller. But, regardless of what I wanted to be called, I started working at the age of 30, telling funny stories to audiences and getting them to laugh and I’ve henceforth been called a comedian.”
Having grown up in the Cape Flats, Marc says he only realised later in life what a gift it was. Even during a time of chaos in the country, his parents - who were rather protective over him and his brother, Tony - still tried to make things okay and as comfortable as possible.
“The thing about the people from the Cape Flats is, no matter what we go through, we always make time to cry with laughter. And that’s the gift that the Cape Flats gave me.”
According to Marc, the best storytellerscolourful storytellers - are from the Cape Flats and he draws from that for his comedic style and the way he tells stories.
His upbringing also taught him how to approach and highlight difficult, yet relevant topics, turn it around and still see the positive in it. “Mostly, in life, it is possible… People often talk about how, through their darkest times, they were able to laugh at themselves or see the funny side of the situation, and that gets us through stuff. I think I’ve taken that from my upbringing in the Cape Flats and brought it into my comedic life.”
Aunty Merle - one of Marc’s recent characters - was based on his mother, which is why he feels so incredibly close to the character. “Every single gesture, every word that she says, her movements, the way I’m thinking - I’ve taken that from my mom. My mother passed away some years back, so it’s very special for me to be able to do Aunty Merle. When I am doing that character, it somehow feels like my mother is with me on stage and I think that’s just such a wonderful gift to have as an artist. And, it brings so much joy to people.”
His other characters have all also been drawn from real people. He writes these characters into his stories by observing real people in real life and he is convinced that it’s these observations and people’s way of identifying with the characters that get the audience laughing.
“It’s all drawn from real life. Honesty in comedy is still the best thing,” he says.
You can still catch the Marc Eugene Lottering show at the Theatre on the Bay in Camps Bay at the beginning of October. Tickets are available via www.webtickets.co.za. (It might also run early next year).
In November and December, book your tickets for Alfred and Marc at the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town.
With the platform Marc Lottering has built over the years, comes great responsibility, and he knows it. Through honest comedy, he brings joy and hope to the nation and beyond.
With such a huge platform, trying to bring certain messages across through his shows is unavoidable. “I like to let the audience know where I am at in my life,” Marc says. “Why keep it to myself if there are aspects of my life that I think I can share with other people to make their lives better and to make them feel great?” Still, “the world is a harsh place,” he adds. “Prejudice exists in so many ways - be it your age, how you identify sexually, your colour, your race. People will find ways in which to box you in and get ugly about it. So, I am about celebrating who you are.”
That statement partly led to his latest show, Marc Eugene Lottering, which revolves around ancestry and where he comes from. He says the show - which is different to his previous shows but has been very well receivedspeaks to the secrets that families keep about their ancestry. “Particularly for me, as a brown person from Cape Town, it’s a really tricky issue. But, I guess, ultimately you stand on stage, celebrating every aspect of who you are, instead of hiding things away for whatever reason the great-grandparents wanted to hide stuff away from us. You can take all of these facets and celebrate them, because they form part of who you are and life is short. I learn that more and more and I try and share that with the audience.”
As comedian, Marc creates his characters for the purpose of getting the audience to scream with laughter. Aunty Merle - which he has written three musicals around - is something else, adding some lessons to the laughs. “You look at those big musical productions and there are lessons in all of them, Marc says.
Chapter 1, Aunty Merle, The Musical, reminds the audience that family will ultimately stand together, even when you think you have a dark secret and someone is holding it against you. “As musicals go, love conquers all,” he says.
Installment two, Aunty Merle, It’s A Girl is about family standing together in the face of prejudice, finally proving that love triumphs. “Because it must ‘mos’ in musicals,” Marc laughs.
In the third chapter, Aunty Merle, Things Get Real, Aunty Merle loses her home because of the Covid-19 pandemic and its ramifications. But, things turn around for her, because of the kindness she and her family had shown to someone many years ago. A miracle for Aunty Merle - all because of an act of kindness - which goes to show
that even amidst hardships, we can be kind. And, through the laughs, “the lessons, I guess, are there,” Marc says.
According to Marc, there are many things that could give birth to a show. When he has a story that just doesn’t want to leave his head, he knows he must create material around it. “Different things spark my imagination,” he says, broadly elaborating about a recent experience at the dentist. In addition, visuals also inspire his content. And, deadlines!
When a venue director wants to book Marc a year in advance, it serves as great inspiration. Once your space for next year is booked, “come hell or high water, you need to do a show,” Marc says. In fact, that is how his show, Marc Eugene Lottering came about. It was during the time that he had signed the contract with Montecasino’s Pieter Toerien Theatre that he also had many discussions with relatives… “Interesting things about my grandparents that I did not know and about my ancestry that I really did not know.” At the time, he’d also read the book, Coloured by Tessa Dooms and Lynsey Chutel, which served as additional inspiration for the show.
It almost seems unnatural, yet Marc Lottering has made the big shift from standup comedy to musicals seem effortless. He says one of the biggest shifts was moving from being the only person on stage, to various actors, dancers, singers and musicians on stage, every night. Still, he loves the world of musicals. “I think both of them have their charms. I always joke with the audience and say that when I’m doing my one-man-show, it can be lonely, but when I take the bow at the end of the show, I smile because I know the EFT is only coming to me. I don’t have to share it with fifteen other people!” Yet, when the musical season carries on for longer than two months, Marc says it becomes like family and you don’t go through stuff alone. “We are tied together forever and I think we will still continue to do amazing things as a company. Not necessarily [Aunty] Merle, because we’ve done the trilogy, but there are many things I still want to do as far as musical theatre goes.”
He is also very keen on exploring film again. The challenge there lies in finding a director who understands him and his comedy beats well. Not just his comedy beats, but also what he talks about; what turns him on as a comedian. “When the creative team is in your head and on your side - those are the
things that make it become a phenomenal series that people will talk about forever and a day.” Looking back on previous television experiences, Marc says he did not have that and he wasn’t ready for it. “I think I am now. I am also able to be very selective as to whom I surround myself with when it comes to these things.”
Of course, he will continue with is stage work and also write for other people. He is excited about the fact that he can sit back and hear his comedy be told by other people. H

Q @marc_lottering
HL: What makes you laugh, no matter what?
ML: Ladies who are into their 70s who come and watch my show, feel that they’ve earned the right - when they stand for a picture with me - to pat my bum. I don’t know if it’s just a motherly thing to do, but it’s done in a very affectionate way. It’s not even seductive. It’s just a friendly, warm pat on the bum. It happens regularly with ladies moving into that age group. It’s charming! It’s charming!
HL: How do you unwind after a long day of performing?
ML: A ‘lekker’ plate of food - usually curry - is what I look forward to when I get home. I can’t have curry every night, but I get excited if there is good curry or Thai food. That’s my thing. And then, a good series on TV. If I get stuck into something on Netflix or Showmax and I am absolutely loving it, then that’s me. I love a good series and I love getting stuck into it.
HL: If you weren’t a comedian, what career do you think you’d have pursued?
ML: I would have maybe been in advertising, but I tell you something, I would have made a very, very good teacher. I would have been Mister Popular. The kids would have loved me.
HL: What’s one piece of advice you would give your younger self?
ML: Live in the moment. Savour the moment. Life moves; it motors. It goes on. We read this stuff all the time, but you’ve gotta remind yourself to put it into practice.

She’s run numerous routes all over the world, yet Cape Town’s Chapman’s Peak remains a favourite for Olympian, Gerda Steyn. Routes like these are what made us fall in love with running. Are you in the same boat? We’ve asked Gerda to share some tips on how
to become a better runner.
#HelloJoburg by Renate Engelbrecht Images: Supplied
For many, running is an escape. For Gerda, it started as a means of meeting friends when she moved to another city or country. Naturally, her first bit of advice would be to join a running group to help you stay on track and to ensure that you enjoy the process. According to her, fitness takes time and you have to build into it and not overdo it in such a way that you are put off by it early on. Gerda says: “Everyone is different and it will depend on your current fitness and also your ability to stay injury free and motivated. The human body is incredibly capable and adaptable and if you really want to reach your goals, you will. It might take two months or it might take a year; the secret is not to give up, regardless of what your timeline looks like.”
Running professionally is a whole other ball game than just running recreationally. “Most professional runners run on a daily basis, often twice daily and also incorporate different forms of cross training. It truly is
a full-time job and to make the transition from social running to professional running is not as simple as it might seem. I remember so well when I made the decision to make running my profession. It was daunting at the start with a lot of uncertainty about the outcome of my decision. Fortunately, it wasn’t too long before I started seeing the results. Still, a lot of changes had to be made for me to make a success of my career,” the Olympian says.
Apparently, the secret to improving from shorter distances to running a 21km lies in incorporating short interval-type workouts, as well as longer tempo runs at your target pace, into your weekly training routine. “Don’t forget to also incorporate nice easy running in between the workouts,” Gerda adds. While it’s often neglected, she says cross training is very important for runners. “[It] can help with injury prevention and also with building a strong endurance base without the risk of burnout or overtraining.”H

English stadium pop-rockers, Coldplay’s 10th studio album, Moon Music, releases worldwide on 4 October 2024. The first single, feelslikeimfallinginlove received wide radio support on release and suggests a continuation of the crowd-friendly singalong philosophy that makes the band such a popular live draw. CODENAMES
A game for two teams, Codenames requires players to deduce which blocks on the gameboard signify friendly versus enemy agents, while avoiding an assassin hidden in the same board. One member of each team is the designated “Spymaster” (who knows where each of the agents are) and, looking at a board full of images, he or she must use oneword clues to describe the picture on the block his or her team will hopefully pick. That’s without, of course, using terms that directly correspond to those images. Ideas will differ as the spymasters rotate throughout the game and, whichever team is slowest to contact their full cohort of agents, has a license to… lose.

ROCK MUSIC – THE HISTORY OF A GENRE
English music journalist, Andrew Hickey takes a deep dive into the origins and development of rock music from 1938 to 1999 in his A History Of Rock Music in 500 Songs. If you’re a big fan of rock, this is something close to an audio encyclopaedia of every influential music act you enjoy and all the links - sometimes bizarre; sometimes prosaic - between them. It’s Hickey’s enthusiasm and phenomenal research though, that make the podcast a wonderful option for any music lover.

The Man Maketh the Mouse
Brett Wesley De Groot stars as Mickey Mouse in Disney’s stage extravaganza, The Magic Box. We just had to know more about the production that is said to be one of a kind…
THE MAGIC KINGDOM IS A FAMILIAR SPACE FOR YOU, WITH YOUR OWN SELF-PRODUCED PRODUCTIONS, INCLUDING THE MAN AND THE MOUSE AND DISNEY IN THE PARK. HOW DID THAT BACKGROUND FEATURE IN YOUR AUDITIONING FOR THIS ROLE – WERE SHOWTIME AND THE OTHER PRODUCERS OF THE MAGIC BOX FAMILIAR WITH YOUR WORK?
I think there was a large amount of interest in my CV around it. I did audition for it like everyone else in the cattle call - the most intense process I’ve been through! My past work came up when I came back for the character calls, as it plays into Disney,
knowing that I’m aware of the history of the characters and of Walt Disney himself. This is a very different show to anything I’ve done - a mix of styles and applied theatre.
WHAT IS IT THAT ATTRACTS YOU TO DISNEY? OTHER THAN THEATRICAL, WHAT HAVE YOUR EXPERIENCES WITH THE COMPANY’S LEGACY BEEN?
As a kid, Disney was my first introduction to musical theatre. Seeing The Little Mermaid on screen, I learned that it was structured like a stage musical and it showed me how to tell a story in that way. My hopes and dreams for the future came from that - I fell in love with this amplified world of magic and storytelling. I was one of the few kids I knew who was obsessed with the film, Fantasia. It feels a bit like a cult movie now, but I was obsessed with the whole audiovisual experience and it was where I first fell in love with Mickey Mouse. The Magic Box is a bit like Fantasia, so it’s incredible for me to have closed that circle. I also really relate to Walt and the drive he had to tell stories.
YOU PLAY MICKEY MOUSE IN THE MAGIC BOX – THE BIGGEST, MOST ESTABLISHED NAME IN THE DISNEY CANON. PRESUMING THAT WAS THE GOAL ROLE, WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BRING TO THE SHOW AS MICKEY?
It wasn’t the goal role! We actually didn’t know anything about the show when we started auditioning - who would not want to audition for Disney? I did the whole singing and dancing audition before being told they didn’t want that from me, but that I must come back the following day for something that would push me out of my comfort zone. Which it did! Mickey is probably the best-known character on Earth, for everyone from my grandparents to young kids. What they really want in the show is the original Mickey, not the ceremonial Mickey we see today. He was designed in the Great Depression and inspired to a large degree by Charlie Chaplin. He’s an anti-hero in some ways, as he causes all his own problems through being mischievous, before solving them. In this show, I want to remind people that he’s not just a mouse who waves at people in a parade.
AS A WRITER, PRODUCER (WITH YOUR COMPANY, THE BIG PRODUCTIONS) AND PERFORMER IN YOUR OWN SHOWS, HOW DOES THE EXPERIENCE OF ACTING IN SOMEONE ELSE’S SHOW DIFFER? THE VISION
IS THEIRS, BUT SO IS THE RESPONSIBILITY?
My career has not been just one thing. I’m a storyteller - that’s what I’ve now figured out. This show is completely different, but in many ways, I’m still telling a story. We’re creating this from the ground up. This is the launch of the English version of the show and they’ve been so generous in letting me take a run at this character. They encourage improvisation and seeing what we can bring to our roles. So again, that’s not too different from what I usually do.
WITH AN INTERNATIONAL TOUR ON THE WAY, HOW DO YOU STRUCTURE YOUR LIFE AROUND A PROJECT LIKE THIS? IT’S AMAZING TO HAVE GREAT EMPLOYMENT LIKE THIS FOR A SUSTAINED PERIOD, BUT IT DOES ALSO MEAN OTHER IDEAS MAY HAVE TO TAKE A BACK SEAT. I wish I could say I was putting things on the back burner! The international tour has some time off, so I have other projects - television endeavours I’m producing, directing and writing - that I’ll be filming between the international legs of The Magic Box. You can’t sit around and wait for people to give you opportunities.
WHAT KIND OF PRODUCTION IS THE MAGIC BOX?
You have never seen anything like it. It’s not at all classical musical theatre. It’s something that hasn’t been done before. It’s an original story and so cleverly woven together with the most incredible set design. People will be wowed by the pure simplicity of what we’re doing, along with the incredible technical aspects. The story is structured around the lead characters - Mickey Mouse and his friends - and them taking this young girl, Mara through a magical world that is not dissimilar to Alice In Wonderland in many ways. It's a universal story and it’s the most talented ensemble ever! H Q @brettwesleydegroot

Beautiful, modern chandeliers hang overhead as you enter and tables and chairs in neutral hues are scattered throughout the restaurant space. In the middle, a large table filled with humungous cakes and supersized biscuits tempt you even before you’ve had lunch and against the walls, brightly coloured bird-inspired artworks add to the ambiance.
Seated next to the window overlooking the square, our noses in the menu, we contemplated between smaller plates, sushi or mains. Aduna’s menu is rather extensive and we needed some time to consider our options. So, to buy ourselves some time, we ordered a Piña Colada mocktail, which instantly transported us to a beach in the Seychelles with its island-style flavours. Slowly, we paged through the menu as we sipped on the heavenly combination of pineapple and coconut. Since we were there for lunch and the sudden snow on the Drakensberg had shoved spring out the door and kicked us into winter gear once more, we were in the mood for something hearty and wholesome. We finally opted for their Teriyaki Salmon - a crispy salmon served with garlic pak choi, edamame beans and a refreshing wasabi mayonnaise and Teriyaki sauce, topped with a handful of Thai crispy rice noodles. While the dish leaned toward Asian cuisine, the menu features various hints of local cuisine, including a generous portion of slow braised oxtail in a rich, red wine sauce, served with baby carrots and a traditional, creamy samp.
At the table across from us, guests were indulging in burgers from the weekly special menu – R95 for your choice of one out of three mains on Mondays to Fridays between noon and 15:00. On the day of our visit, the two alternatives to the Classic Cheeseburger our neighbours were enjoying, included a Halloumi and Avo Salad, or Aduna Bistro’s Chicken Pesto Pasta.
Finally, we ended off our lunch on a sweet note, with the hotel restaurant’s Milk Tart Crème Brûlée, complemented by an elegantly served Americano.
Aduna - managed and run by an external company called The Venue - reverberates sophistication and style and with a menu so vast, you’re likely to find something that will tickle your taste buds. If you’re looking for the perfect hidden gem for a bubbly brunch, light lunch or delicious dinner in Melrose Arch, Aduna Bistro might just be the answer. H

October 2024 sees one of Sandton’s longest-standing hotels, the Protea Hotel by Marriott Johannesburg Balalaika Sandton, celebrate its 75th Anniversary. To add a touch of extra ‘shine’ to the occasion, the hotel is taking its Jubilee celebration to social media, inviting its followers to share their memories of the Balalaika for a chance to win a diamond valued at R30 000.
Established in 1949, the Balalaika Hotel is a mainstay of Sandton’s CBD, beginning its journey as an ‘outspan stop’ on the old wagon road between Johannesburg and Pretoria, where early travellers would park their wagons and let their oxen graze.
Not much is known of the founder of the site and tearoom in 1949. It is believed to be Gerard Le Grand, a British Royal Marine Officer who established the old Good Hope Tea Garden on the site. Gerard and his wife lived on the tearoom premises while the original hotel was being built. He managed the tearoom and added a selection of rustic rondavels to
accommodate country travellers coming to town.
As Sandton gradually evolved into the central business centre in the heart of northern Johannesburg, the Balalaika grew with it, becoming a landmark known for its blend of modern luxury and timeless charm. Incidentally, the name ‘Balalaika’ is believed to have been inspired by the 1939 film of the same name, reflecting the hotel’s established association with music and culture.
Recent refurbishments have ensured that the Balalaika continues to meet the needs of both business and leisure travellers, all
The Balalaika Jubilee competition is open to followers of the hotel’s Facebook and Instagram pages between 1 and 20 October 2024. To enter, followers are invited to share an image of the Balalaika Hotel with a short caption explaining the image or your favourite memory using the hashtag #BalalaikaJubilee. Entrants must also tag the hotel in their posts. Terms and conditions apply. The grand prize winner will be notified via the relevant social media platform.
while preserving the character that has made it a beloved institution for 75 years. Andrew Visagie, Chief Operating Officer from Protea Hotel by Marriott Johannesburg Balalaika Sandton, says: “The Balalaika’s enduring legacy is distinguished by every traveller that has spent a night in the hotel. It has served a cross-section of guests from all over the world, including many famous - and even infamous - characters who have passed through Johannesburg over many decades. It is fitting that we honour the hotel’s history with a celebration highlighting the stories visitors and guests have to share. We look forward to many more years of excellence to come.” H

When you drive past something as often as some of us drive past the Palm House Boutique Hotel in the leafy suburb of Upper Wynberg, it’s easy to forget that it is even there. Following a recent visit to the hotel, we couldn’t resist returning once more - this time, to discover what the destination’s restaurant, De Tafel has to offer.
As we entered the property, we were once again awestruck by the stately home that forms the heart of the Palm House Boutique Hotel, overlooking manicured lawns and an illuminated swimming pool. Stepping through the grand pillared entrance of the centuryold main house - a National Monument - we were taken aback by the timeless charm of the building. The wood panelling around the lobby fireplace, the hand-crafted sweeping staircase and the classic furnishings all spoke to the home's history, while the décor added a touch of contemporary elegance.
Our culinary journey began with a well-crafted cocktail and bar snacks in the intimate bar and lounge area. We were then led into De Tafel, a dinneronly dining room decorated with crystal chandeliers, plush seating, quirky but classy flamingo wallpaper and a single
pincushion protea on each tableperfectly illuminated by its own table lamp.
At the helm of De Tafel is Executive Chef and dedicated forager, Gregory Henderson. While it’s trendy to claim that one has a passion for sustainability, this chef lives out his passion for food with an authentic fervour. He incorporates decades of experience into a menu of contemporary Cape cuisine that takes inspiration from both land and sea. In fact, Henderson has an impressive wealth of knowledge about the indigenous flora and flavours of the Cape – something that came through strongly in each of the six courses of his ‘My Cape Inspired Journey’ menu.
The first course was dubbed ‘The Sewejaartjie’ and was a beautifully plated appetiser inspired by the fynbos shrub of the same name, known for its
paper-like leaves. The dish - resembling a flower - consisted of an olive bubble resting on petals of beetroot, with a base of orange sweet potato terrine.
Following the first course’s exquisite presentation, celebrating the earth’s richness, we moved on to the coast for the next course. Saldana Bay oysters with smoked mayo, buchu gremolata, bokkoms and truffle pearls perfectly captured the essence of the Cape's coastline in a course called ‘Oesters.’ Hints of buchu, which featured several times throughout the menu, certainly brought out some special notes in the oyster.
Peruvian Scallop - a species included in the WWF’s green list - brought us to the third course, served with sea lettuce salt, feral fennel espuma and nutmeg pelargonium. Henderson explained that in keeping with his commitment to using sustainable ingredients, all the other seafood items on the menu were sourced through ABALOBI, a company that supports ethical and ecologically responsible seafood, harvested by small-scale fishers. The scallop shells were local, foraged from Hout Bay.
An Elgin Valley-inspired apple sorbet with fennel fronds and suikerbossie nectar followed as a palate cleanser before the main course, where we had a choice between two options. While some went with the Kaapenaar, prepared from silverfish (endemic to the Southern Coast of South Africa) with seaweed candy and Strandveld oil - a reflection of the Cape's maritime heritage - we opted for the perfectly tender Joostevlakte Duck Breast. The rich duck dish was complemented by the earthy flavours of buchu beetroot and borrie parsnip.
While ‘Bioclimate’ doesn’t sound like the most decadent of desserts, like everything else we experienced at De Tafel, it was pleasantly surprising. As someone who is not just a chef and a forager, but also a beekeeper, Henderson explained his passion for and the importance of honey and how it was incorporated into the meal. The dessert, consisting of fynbos honey panna cotta and heuning boegoe crème glacée, with fallen nut brittle and a nuance of indigenous honeybush, was created to capture the delicate balance of the Cape's ecosystem and the role of the honeybee in it. Despite the weight of the backstory, this final course was delightfully light and not too sweet.
Each course was perfectly paired with wines from De Tafel’s impressive collection, which focuses on boutique Cape wine estates. Sommelier, Richard Goza was on hand at all times, drawing from 23 years of experience at a host of impressive restaurants, guiding us through each course and its perfect pairing.
When we asked Henderson how much of our meal was foraged, he said: “A lot.” He explained that he has been researching the fynbos biome for over 20 years and has collected a list of 7500 ingredients endemic and indigenous to South Africa. He believes that we have yet to truly discover the flavours of South Africa and that this is a journey towards that.
One thing is certain: Henderson captured the flavours of the Cape in a way we had never experienced before. We might not have gone foraging, but we certainly found a culinary treasure in an unexpected place. De Tafel is easily the most impressive of Cape Town’s bestkept secrets. Truth be told - if our meal was anything to go by, De Tafel won’t be a secret for long. H

Maria's Greek Café in Gardens is simultaneously one of Cape Town’s best-kept secrets and a local favourite for those who have discovered it. Tucked away in a cosy corner of Dunkley Square, this quaint café is known for its inviting, laid-back atmosphere, rustic décor and scenic outdoor seating under the trees. The menu offers a selection of Greek-Mediterranean dishes, from light grilled calamari salads to mouthwatering meze platters, hearty meals like roast lamb, simple favourites like fish and chips and even vegan options. They also stock a unique collection of wines from boutique wine farms that are not always easy to find elsewhere.
While the 65-year-old restaurant has remained the same and maintained something of its original charm since the days when the Maria it was named after was living on the top floor, it has grown over the years. As it has gained popularity, it has taken over adjacent shops and continues to expand. It is also a favourite private function venue for birthdays, business meetings, year-end functions and the odd wedding here and there. With its warm hospitality, al fresco dining and the aroma of Mediterranean herbs in the air, Maria's Greek Café brings the warmth and flavours of Greece to the heart of the Mother City.
With majestic views over False Bay, Cape to Cuba in Kalk Bay is a vibrant and eclectic restaurant that transports diners straight to the heart of Havana. With its colourful, Bohemian décor, mismatched furniture, gorgeous antiques, opulent chandeliers and Cuban artefacts, this seaside gem may be the coolest restaurant in Cape Town. The menu features everything from spicy tapas to hearty mains and vegetarian options, all bursting with bold flavours. And, can we let you in on a little secret? Their signature Paella is a local favourite!
The on-site Hemingway Bar, with a floor that is partially covered in beach sand, adds to this place’s wow factor and the line-up of live music makes for many memorable events. It serves an impressive selection of cocktails, mouthwatering tapas and even Cuban cigars from the restaurant’s humidor. The beachfront location elevates the experience even further, of course, making it perfect for sundowners, a laid-back meal or even a lively year-end function. Feel the cool ocean breeze while DJs swoon you with Latin-inspired beats ’til midnight. Cape to Cuba is a quirky, must-visit spot that promises a unique and memorable experience.
If you’re looking for something a little different, Cape Town has its first Siberian Asian Restaurant. Saint Juz was started by two Siberian ladies with a shared passion for food and wine who met by chance in St. Petersburg. As Siberia borders Asia, it finds itself at a crossroad between European and Asian cultures, with a mix of flavours from both sides of the border. Saint Juz's menu combines the best of both worlds: Siberian recipes carefully handed down by the restaurateurs’ grandmothers, with influences from renowned Thai and Japanese chefs whom they have had the privilege of working with. They are known for their ‘Siberian Pelmeni’ - traditional dumplings which they refer to as little pockets of love. Other highlights include Beef Stroganoff and Tom Yum Soup from a recipe that Chef Ananya learnt in Thailand. Saint Juz caters for small year-end functions and is also known for its blind wine tasting experiences where guests are given two reds and two whites and can win a cash prize for correctly identifying each type.
Brunch and Bubbly is a brunch experience that happens on select Sundays at Botany Café at the President Hotel in Bantry Bay. In keeping with the name and inspired by the botanical garden that was located in the bay in the 1800s, the relaxed eatery pairs the freshness of garden-inspired cuisine with the indulgence of fine bubbly. The menu, brimming with sustainably sourced and healthy dishes, caters to all tastes, featuring breakfast bowls, flapjacks, Eggs Benedict and deli favourites like salads and sandwiches. Decadent desserts, including chocolate cake and cheesecake, are also on offer. Of course, a highlight of the brunch is the bottomless mimosas, made with premium sparkling wine and fresh orange juice. Served from 12:00 to 15:00 on selected Sundays each month, it’s the perfect way to unwind in Cape Town.

The Art of Duplicity is a 1920s prohibition-themed secret bar or speakeasy and an icon of the Cape Town bar scene. It recently welcomed the return of award-winning bartender and one of the bar’s co-founders, Brent Perremore (aka The Rabbit). He honed his craft under the legendary Sasha Petraske in New York - the man credited for starting the modern speakeasy movement. Drawing on his deep knowledge of prohibition-era bars and his passion for telling stories through his cocktails, Brent has just unveiled a brand-new cocktail menu. It draws inspiration from criminal undertones and shady dealings - a nod to the illicit origins of speakeasies. One such cocktail to keep an eye out for is the Serial Killer Milk Punch. Entering the venue (which also serves as an intimate 35-person event space) is like stepping into the 1920s with plush velvet seating, moody lighting and live jazz over weekends. That’s only if you can find it, though! The bar's address is kept secret and guests must decipher clues offered to them when booking. They must also use a password to gain entry. This in itself transports visitors back in time, with every detail carefully crafted to evoke the allure of the prohibition era.

The Tiki Tomb is what is (to the best of our knowledge) Cape Town’s only tiki bar and it happens to be underground. This basement bar is inspired by the tiki cocktail culture movement started by Don the Beachcomber in Los Angeles in the 1950s. The cocktail menu is full of authentic favourites with interesting twists. From brightly coloured parrots to monkey heads and tiki skulls, the creative concoctions are served in tumblers and serving cups, unlike anything you’re ever likely to have pressed your lips against before. The tiki décor is equally unique and unforgettable. Together with an entertainment lineup of live music, DJs and karaoke (or ‘tikioke’), there’s always a good time to be had in this basement bar.
Q @thetikitomb
warrants a visit. With live music, a kitchen that stays open ’til late (often tricky to find in this city) and tons of cocktails, this is a great venue for a yearend function, drinks with your buddies or a fun night out of any sort.

We were heading towards the end of winter. The trees lining the streets of The Village in the Pretoria neighbourhood, Hazelwood, were all starting to show signs of new life with small, bright green leaves catching the eye even at dusk. Entering SMOKE Restaurant, it was clear: This was the perfect spot to end off the season on a high note.
We were escorted from the one end of the restaurant to the other, through a section that was obviously designed to accommodate live entertainment and TV screens. At the other end of the eatery, we were shown to an intimate, low standing table with two laidback seats in front of a lovely fireplace. Perfect for welcoming drinks, we instantly opted for a glass of bubbly each, kicking off our self-declared winter’s end dinner in style. This more intimate section of the restaurant has been cleverly designed that the live entertainment area is visible, but not
disturbing to the eye (or the ears) and the space has been elevated with the impressive Capital Bar, warm colours, comfortable couches, stunning light fixtures and ceiling detail.
Well-known Pretoria chef, Pellie Grobler has recently joined the SMOKE team as Executive Chef and he says he is enjoying the creativity behind mainly cooking with smoke and fire. In fact, as their menu explains, they use several ways to cook with fire at SMOKE. These include open fire pits, which they keep going with Vaalbos or Groen Sekelbos wood, sustainably sourced from Limpopo. In addition, they also use a Josper Grill, which was imported from Spain and now forms the heart of the SMOKE kitchen, as well as Cabinet Smokers, manufactured in Pretoria and now towering over the SMOKE yard. In partnership with Nexgrill, SMOKE also offers diners a one-ofa-kind, culinary smoking experience on their Oakford Pellet Grill.
Over a glass of Rupert & Rothschild Vignerons’ Anthonij Rupert & Benjamin de Rothschild Classique 2020, we got to savour in some of the best cuisine in town. Our starters came in the form of a collection of small plates, including traditional Roosterkoek with Flavoured Butter (one of the butters being a delightfully unique ash butter), Bobotie Croquettes served with a homemade Granny Smith Apple Chutney, and Smoked Chicken Wings with a Garlic, Creamy Mayo and Dijon Mustard Dip. Mains had us mesmerised with a Hanger Steak that came with a Stout Glaze, Artichoke Puree, Roasted Beetroot, Crispy Artichokes and Charred Fennel Dust. Not to mention the Fire Brick Chicken cooked over fire, weighed down under a fire brick, served with Steamed Samp, Pea Velouté and Crispy Sage. We also got to taste the Slow Smoked Pork Fillet, which came with a Potato Baton, Baby Carrots, an Eisbein Croquette and a Pork Chocolate Jus. In addition, Chef Pellie treated us to a portion of his 24-Hour Potato – layers of golden roasted potato, served with smoked cheese foam and chives. It’s a musthave at SMOKE.
The atmosphere and the delicious cuisine had us all fired up about the culinary scene in Pretoria, showing immense gastronomical talent and creativity that will hopefully catch on and continue to inspire. We can’t wait to visit SMOKE again and to explore even more cooking methods and perhaps some al fresco dining amidst the purple hues that come with the Jacaranda season. H
Let’s celebrate good times, c’mon!

For a warm and welcoming atmosphere amidst trees and a lush garden, look no further than Diep in die Berg (which means Deep in the Mountain). Here, the focus is around food, the vibe and service and you can expect to walk away satisfied. Their menu is dependent on the reason of your visit, with their breakfast menu catering to both local ‘ooms’ craving their English Breakfast fix, and health conscious diners who need their greens first thing. They also have a wide selection of pizzas and flatbreads to choose from, as well as a main menu that includes a variety of starters, salads, sandwiches, gourmet burgers, pastas, platters, specialty dishes and desserts. Diep in die Berg is a restaurant and venue, which means it’s also the ideal spot for a yearend celebration.
Also one of the oldest restaurants in Pretoria, La Madeleine was opened in Sunnyside by Chef-patron Daniel Leusch and his wife, Karine. They relocated to Lynnwood Ridge in 1999, but their commitment to Classic French and Belgian flavours remained. They pride themselves on “high bistronomic techniques at affordable prices” and serve their meals in what they refer to as a relaxed, yet respectful environment. Their portions are generous and beautifully plated and this is one of the few places where you can expect some of the best French cuisine in town.

Located at The Village in Hazelwood, Peaches’ cocktails are all the rave. Think an Apple Old Fashioned, Cuba Libre, Peaches Punch and Agatha’s Panther. If you’re an art lover, you might appreciate Pretoria Art Museum’s latest exhibition. 4 September saw the opening of last year’s Sasol New Signatures winner, Nosiviwe Matikinca’s solo exhibition, as well as the announcement of 2024’s winner, the Bloemfontein sculptor, Miné Kleynhans. Matikinca (23) – a recent graduate from Gqeberha – won the 2023 Sasol New Signatures Art Competition and her first solo exhibition will be showcased at the Pretoria Art Museum between 5 September and 3 November 2024. Her award-winning work in 2023 highlighted the challenges learners from underprivileged backgrounds face in public schools, especially when it comes to basic needs like school shoes. For her solo exhibition, she explored the use of different mediums like printmaking and castings in different materials. That is in addition to her use of ceramics, like the clay castings of school shoes she made for her winning work. “For my solo exhibition, I have decided to continue the narrative I began in 2023 and highlight and educate the public about the challenges faced by learners who come from underprivileged backgrounds. My artworks portray the overcrowding of classes and the lack of school tables, leaving learners to share with others or use broken tables. The carvings on these tables commemorate the presence of learners who were distracted

This ice cream spot and coffee shop has two stores – one on Lynnwood Road close to the University of Pretoria and the other at The Village in Hazelwood. Their gelato is some of the best we’ve ever had and they even have sorbets for the health-conscious and those who prefer less dairy. It’s the perfect spot for the whole family and a great way to spend a late Pretoria afternoon.

due to the overcrowding and noise from their classmates.” Sasol’s Art Curator, Cate Terblanche says: “The use of clay is crucial to understanding Matikinca’s work. Clay as a material speaks of an organic nature. It can be moulded and shaped into any form, and during the firing process, it changes consistency. The nature of the clay speaks to not only the education system which is supposed to mould and shape the young child’s mind and future, but also the precariousness of the public schooling system in South Africa.”

In the heart of Sandton, the recently relaunched AtholPlace Hotel & Villa by Morukuru Family serves as proof that there are still some high-end, secret hideaways amidst the rushed lifestyle Joburgers have become accustomed to. From international visitors en route to a safari and in need of a stopover, to corporate guests and those seeking a luxurious urban retreat, AtholPlace is the ultimate boutique hotel and villa, mere minutes away from Johannesburg’s wellknown shopping scene.
The Morukuru Family - a member of Relais & Châteaux - boasts a collection of six five-star properties in South Africa. While three of their properties are based in the popular Madikwe Game Reserve in the North West province and two others are based in the famous De Hoop Nature Reserve in the Western Cape, the Joburg-based AtholPlace Hotel & Villa brings the best of both worlds together with class and comfort intertwined and hidden away around the corner from Sandton City. While the property had been available only for exclusive use bookings since 2020, the hotel - with its nine beautiful bedrooms - has now been reopened for individual bookings. AtholPlace Villa remains an option for exclusive use and both these options now come with a stunning new look. Ed Zeeman, Morukuru Family co-owner says: “Guests will enjoy new floors, carpets and furniture, as well as a brighter pop of colour thanks to the fresh wallpaper. Each room also now has a casting system, allowing guests to connect their devices to the television and stream their own content.”
During a recent visit to AtholPlace Hotel & Villa, we were in awe of how well each room and every detail in the public areas around the property had been thought through. The beautiful bar and dining areas lure you in and we could only imagine the space livening up with guests - champagne flutes in hand - celebrating with those near and dear to them. We were fortunate to have been given a glimpse of the offering during our visit, with a lovely lunch overlooking the property’s garden and pool. Lobster tail was on the menu and it was elegantly plated and presented by a professional kitchen team who sure knows a thing or two about high-quality hospitality. General Manager, Ryno van der Elst offered us a tour of the property, ending off the delightful afternoon with a beautiful dessert in the villa’s airy dining room. The sophisticated villa stands beneath a large Jacaranda tree and its stately façade is complemented by a formal swimming pool and a lavish lawn, inviting visions of laidback afternoons and al fresco poolside dining.
There is a golden string of meticulous quality and detail that runs through the property, bringing things full circle in all the various public spaces - from the intimate gym and the cosy library to the well-designed bar and the inviting garden loungers. “We’ve gone to great lengths to ensure our guests have access to everything they could want or need during their stay,” says Zeeman. On a recent weekend getaway, we packed our bags and hit the road from Joburg to the Berg, eager to put this rugged, yet refined bakkie to the test. Our destination: Dalmore Guest Farm in picturesque Winterton - a hidden gem that proved to be the perfect base for our ‘weekend warrior’ adventure.
ISUZU has long been revered as the farmer’s vehicle of choice, perfectly suited to the agricultural sector and loved by farmers nationwide. That’s why we knew that taking the D-MAX to the heart of South Africa’s breadbasket, with its challenging terrain and rocky mountain passes, would make it the perfect location to put this iconic vehicle through its paces.
As we cruised down the N3, the D-MAX quickly showed off its mastery of the South African landscape. The 3.0 Ddi Double Cab LSE 4x4 Automatic model delivers an impressive 140 kW of power and 450 Nm of torque, effortlessly tackling the open road. Whether overtaking slow-moving trucks or gliding through highway traffic, the D-MAX handled it all with ease, offering a quiet and comfortable ride that belied its tough exterior.
Our journey took us through the Oliviershoek Pass, which runs parallel to Van Reenen’s Pass and is considered
one of the most scenic tar passes in the country. From this vantage point, we were treated to panoramic views of the Drakensberg Valley below, providing the perfect backdrop for planning our weekend adventure ahead.
Upon arrival at Dalmore Guest Farm, we were greeted by Pippa and Andrew Blackburn, whose family has owned this working guest farm since the early 1900s. Nestled in the heart of the Drakensberg, Dalmore is an idyllic retreat, perfect for families and friends alike. The farm offers a range of accommodation options, from intimate one-bedroom suites to spacious twoand three-bedroom cottages, all with full self-catering facilities. While the hearty, farm-style breakfasts and dinners were tempting, the D-MAX’s towing capabilities meant we could bring along our own gear for a truly self-sufficient adventure.
The Drakensberg is a playground for outdoor enthusiasts and the D-MAX was more than up to the challenge. Whether we were towing a trailer or boat down to Spioenkop Dam for an open-water swim, or navigating rugged trails for a sunset trail run, the D-MAX proved its versatility. The partial leather seat trim in the LSE model kept us comfortable no matter how dusty or muddy things got, and the wireless charger ensured our devices were always ready to capture those epic moments.
But, it’s not just the D-MAX’s performance that impressed us. The upmarket interior, complete with a nineinch touchscreen multimedia system and seamless Apple CarPlay integration, made long drives feel like a luxury experience. Plus, with an average fuel consumption of 9L/100 km during our trip, this bakkie is as economical as it is capable.
July marked a special milestone for ISUZU, with the launch of the Limited Edition D-MAX 45 in celebration of 45 years of South African assembly. This special edition comes equipped with a host of accessories designed to enhance your adventures, including Bundu Basher rubber mats, a Black Rhinoman X-pedition canopy and a spray-on bedliner to protect the load bay. It’s the ultimate package for those who demand both style and substance from their vehicle.
In the end, our journey to the Drakensberg with the ISUZU D-MAX 4x4 was a reminder of why this bakkie has become a South African icon. Whether you’re an avid adventurer or just someone looking for a reliable and stylish vehicle for your weekend getaways, the D-MAX is a choice you won’t regret. Built for the bush, but perfect for the road, it’s a bakkie that truly embodies the spirit of exploration.H
The ISUZU D-MAX 45 4×4 A/T, 3.0L Diesel sells for R906 100 and includes all the extras mentioned above. The D-MAX is also backed with a 5-year/120 000 km warranty and 5-year/90 000 km service plan.

When the excitement of year-end celebrations catches on, it’s easy to overspend on things you think will make the party. Yet, these things often end up being unnecessary and short-lived. So, spending your year-end function budget wisely should be top of mind.
We’ve asked Brahman Hills’ CEO, Orrin Cottle to share some insights on where and on what best to spend your bucks for the perfect year-end celebration.
The venue is one of the first things to consider when it comes to a year-end function. “Select a venue that offers more than just great food and atmosphere,” says Orrin. “For instance, Brahman Hills boasts 26 international awardwinning garden rooms and is set within the 1000-hectare Blue Crane Nature Reserve. This expansive natural setting provides a serene backdrop for reflection on the year’s achievements and allows employees to connect with nature, promoting relaxation and rejuvenation as they prepare for the coming year.”
& RECOGNITION
An awards ceremony is key to any year-end function. “Babies cry for it, grown men die for it – recognition!” So, give recognition to those who have worked hard over the past year.
“For top achievers, consider offering a night’s stay or a weekend away,” says Orrin. There are numerous top-quality accommodation options across the country, like Brahman Hills’ luxurious bed and breakfast offering which caters to various budgets, making it an incredible reward for outstanding performance within your company.
Why should a year-end function only consist of a party if you can maximise on it with the opportunity to invest in your people and build trust within teams? Orrin suggests you spend part of your year-end celebration budget on an additional teambuilding activity or three. “Brahman Hills, for example, can offer an exhilarating experience with our full-scale obstacle course, complete with a zipline, tailormade for teambuilding and excitement at your event.”
In addition to teambuilding activities, any engaging, interactive experience would allow employees to learn and create memories together. Think along the lines of wine or whiskey tasting sessions, a sip and paint experience where participants can unleash their creativity, or even guided garden and sculpture walks (like those offered at Brahman Hills). “These interactive experiences not only entertain, but also provide opportunities for
team bonding and personal growth in a relaxed setting,” says Orrin.
Another way to bring the team together as the end of the year approaches, is by using your year-end celebration as an opportunity to make a positive impact on the local community. “Brahman Hills supports multiple Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres through the NPO, The Unlimited Child. You can spend the morning giving a local crèche a mini makeover before heading back to Brahman Hills for the year-end party. Many of these centres need a good paint job or repairs to buildings and facilities. This hands-on approach to giving back is not only fulfilling, but also reinforces the importance of investing in our future. This activity will ensure that you end the year on a meaningful and impactful note,” Orrin concludes.
While we’re all for making the most of your year-end function, we’re even more for making it matter and for allocating your year-end celebration budget in a clever and considerate way. H
