O
ver the past couple of months, I’ve been fortunate to travel across large chunks of South Africa. We traversed – toddlers in tow – four provinces in December to be with our families over the festive season. As we were driving down to the stunning Garden Route from a buzzing Pretoria, I realised how incredibly lucky we were to be able to experience such beauty and diversity, all within one country. From clouds rolling in over the farmlands in the Freestate and the Karoo veld beaming after recent rains, to the majestic beauty of the Indian Ocean as the tips of its waves tickle your toes – it’s a country like no other. Since this Summer’s End edition comes with a large focus on love and Valentine’s Day, I want to urge you to focus on one more love in 2024: Your love for Mzansi.
Make a list of the most romantic cabins you want to visit (you’ll find some suggestions in our travel section), but also of the lesser-known places like Oudtshoorn’s intriguing ostrich farms, the incredible Cango Caves, and coffee shops and restaurants that no one knows about. Follow in our cover star, Samkelo Ndlovu’s footsteps and try true South African cuisine like Umleqwa and pap. Meander the streets of Cape Town and potentially meet your match at this year’s International Public Art Festival. Sip on South Africa’s top-quality wines (find my suggestions for summer sipping on page 21). Celebrate the last bit of summer by going out and truly submerging yourself in what our beautiful country has to offer. Go ahead. Fall in love with South Africa all over again this year.

Samkelo Ndlovu
OPPOSITES
A
ffectionately known as Samu or Samurai by those who love her, Reyka actress, Samkelo Ndlovu describes herself as a “quintessential modern woman.” Currently on television screens in two contrasting roles – Minki in Adulting Season 2 and Ayanda in M-Net’s second season of Reyka – you might be surprised when she says that in real life, she’s actually a very girly girl. “I always have so much pink and fluffy stuff.”
A LIFE OF OPPOSITES AND CONTRASTS It’s often the roles that are opposite to who Samkelo is in real life, that attract her. Since kicking off her career more than fourteen years ago, her role in Soul City is one that still stands out today, as she was cast for it at a rather young age. This role also led to her first SAFTA nomination. “It was quite a challenging role. I was twenty-four, twenty-six and I was playing a seventeen-year-old. It was 8 FEBRUARY - MARCH 2024 l hellolifestyle.co.za
ATTRACT ) ? y e h t o d (or
a beautiful challenge for me, and it taught me a lot about submerging…not just reading lines.” Another role that stood out was her character in Rhythm City, where - in contrast - she played a girl four years older than her real age. “She taught me a lot about leverage; how to not always show your cards.” Her most recent roles have also proven to be two complete opposites from who she is, as well as from one another. One similarity between them, though is that both her roles as Ayanda (Reyka) and Minki (Adulting) were the first two roles she’d been cast in since returning to the entertainment industry after a two-year hiatus. “It had been fourteen years of me working non-stop from one production to another, sometimes two at once, and I needed to rest my artistic muscle,” she says. “I also needed a moment to figure out who I am when I am not an actress. I think it is important for artists, creatives and people in the entertainment
industry to do that, because it’s easy to forget and to only think of yourself as an actor. That’s not healthy. It’s detrimental to everybody else around you. I am also a sister, a friend, a girlfriend, a mom, a daughter – I need to nurture those parts of me that make me whole. I wouldn’t really be an actress without those other parts.” While Reyka was shot at the beginning of 2023, it took ten months to edit. Adulting premiered on television first, even though it was shot in September and October 2023. Thus, between March and September, Samkelo had time to adjust from the Godfearing and constantly praying Ayanda to the complete opposite: The rebellious, impulsive Minki. “It was a chance for me to showcase my range,” she says. “Not just to other people, but to myself too… Taking that plunge is an act of courage. I specifically had characters in mind when I finally said to my agent that I was ready to come back.”
Reyka broadcasts on M-Net (DStv channel 101) every Thursday at 20:00. It's also available on Catch Up and DStv Stream.
FEBRUARY - MARCH 2024 l hellolifestyle.co.za 9
“It's a special day... Like, why not celebrate the person you love?" TAKING THE SHOT In contrast to someone praying all the time, shooting guns was Samkelo’s favourite part about playing Ayanda. “She fights for what’s right. She fights for justice. She will not compromise. She’s that cop you can’t bribe. She will arrest you for bribing her. So, when she is shooting the gun, it’s because she has to.” The role is something she’s always wanted to play and having been given a shot at it, she thoroughly enjoyed running around, sprinting, sweating and doing action sequences. She also liked working alongside Kim Engelbrecht and Gerald Steyn. “Gerald is quite a goofball. I like him on set. He kind of makes things less tense. Sometimes it’s easy to fall into the tension, so I like that he is very light-hearted about stuff.” A LID FOR EVERY POT Samkelo describes herself as an “unstable introvert,” but says once you get to know her, she can also be a goofball. This is the complete opposite of her boyfriend, she says, who is apparently an introvert. Is this proof that opposites attract, then? Who knows? The Adulting character, Minki found love in a hopeless place and Samkelo believes that love will always find a way when two people are meant to be together. “If love is there and communication is there, I think it’s possible. Just not if it’s unhealthy. If it’s unhealthy, leave it. But if it’s healthy, why not?” When it comes to the famous saying, opposites attract, Samkelo is not too sure, though. While she thinks it’s possible, mainly because of the exciting mystery of the differences between two people, she says the attraction is bound to be fleeting. “I don’t think it’s a sustainable idea. There has to be something that we have in common; that can sustain us as a pair.” 10 FEBRUARY - MARCH 2024 l hellolifestyle.co.za
For a long time, the actress refused to date anyone in her industry. “What if we break up and I find you on another production and I have to work with you?” she explains. Things changed, though, as she is now dating a director. “It makes so much more sense, because if I come home ranting about work, he knows exactly what I’m talking about.” ALL IN ON VALENTINE’S DAY Samkelo Ndlovu is all for Valentine’s Day. “I am quite the giver too. It’s a special day… Like, why not celebrate the person you love?” She will be spending her Valentine’s Day with her boyfriend and it seems that while some might believe that opposites attract, they have more similarities than differences that keep them together. “We both have dreadlocks,” she says, disappointed that he’s had his for a shorter time and they’re already longer than hers. “We’re both romantics, and we enjoy the same stuff.” Their differences are almost insignificant and mainly in taste, with him being an Adidas fan and her preferring Nike. “I am very much a Nike girl and he pretends it doesn’t bother him, but I know it does,” she jokes. “Sometimes I steal one of his T-shirts just to show him: ‘It’s okay, I’ll wear Adidas.’” Like her character, Ayanda, she will stick to what she believes in, but she will often throw in tender-hearted gestures to keep the love flame burning. TOUGH, YET TENDER Although different to Samkelo, Ayanda was a rather relatable role for her to portray. “She is set in her ways in terms of her faith. She is a staunch Christian. She prays with a gun in
her hand while she is about to enter a crime scene. I relate to Ayanda because of that, because I am also such a staunch believer in what I believe in.” Samkelo says, like Ayanda she is also tough, but tender. “We are quite similar in that way… I do some courageous things. In 2018 I went and I did Ayahuasca! And that was crazy, because I almost chickened out on the day, but I decided to just go. So, I can be tough, but I am also tender. I like to be treated soft.” Similarly, it takes a lot of courage to take a two-year break from work. But, with tenderness toward herself, Samkelo was able to find her inner self again and rekindle her love for acting. SMASH IT! (BUT ONLY ON TV) When it comes to Samkelo’s role as Minki in Adulting, opposites definitely did attract, which is why she enjoyed playing her so much. While Samkelo would never do it in real life, smashing the character, Eric’s car in the latest season could easily be one of her favourite parts of playing the heartbroken Minki. “I am definitely the opposite of Minki. I would never break somebody’s car. I curl up in a cocoon if my heart is broken and I overthink. I wallow and I sit with the feeling. By the time I’m done, I become more vengeful and use psychological warfare. Like, how am I going to get him back? Look better. Get a new haircut. Go back to the gym – go twice a day! Apply to Gibbs. Learn a new language. Buy a new property. Just do it.” (Like Nike) Still, Samkelo respects Minki’s courage and the fact that she carries her heart on her
sleeve. “It was a fun scene to shoot, yes, but it was also very hard, because it was so loaded and I had to make sure that I could get all the colours and textures in it without making it look like just a crazy girl.” A REKINDLED LOVE AFFAIR In a work environment, what you do can be the complete opposite of who you are and still interest you. Samkelo’s bravery to take a break and find herself again proved that she is willing to work on not only her relationships, but also her relationship with work. She plans on keeping her love for the art of acting alive, by doing it only when she feels compelled to.
“Not because I need to pay my bills. I’ve spent a lot of time to try and cultivate a space for myself where I don’t have to do it like I’ve done it in the past fourteen years; where I had to jump onto the next gig quickly, because bills, bills, bills.” Girly girls can be tough too. Pink stuff and fluff does not make you weak. In fact, Samkelo Ndlovu has proven that time and time again. While perhaps not always on the romantic scene, opposites do seem to attract when it comes to her job as actress. H
Samkelo, crushing on Mzansi Who wouldn’t have a crush on our beautiful country? Here are Samkelo Ndlovu’s favourites: Date night spots Samkelo’s not one for candlelit dinners and looking into each other’s eyes. Her suggestions for a memorable date night are: - Cracker Zacks in Rosebank. “It’s very sexy.” - Ukko Restaurant. “Those tapas are beautiful!” - Louise & Anna. “What’s
cool about Louise & Anna is that they have a bunch of board games on their bar table, so you can order your food and bring a game board onto the table; do a double date, couples against couples. And they have really good food! That lobster and mac and cheese – I sometimes dream about it.” South African destinations - Cape Town, especially with their days ending so late, and the stunning Atlantic Seaboard. - Alexandra, the township she
grew up in. It’s the only place where she washes her car and she loves its shisanyama vibes. - St Lucia - The Garden Route - Port St Johns South African food Umleqwa (hard-body chicken). She likes it best the way the Sothos cook it, prepared with salt only, and served with pap. Drinks Samkelo is a big cognac drinker and she enjoys champagne, but
when she pretends to watch a soccer game with her boyfriend (with one of the Adidas shirts she snatched from his cupboard) she would go for a beer like Stella Artois. Locally produced series Apart from Adulting and Reyka, Samkelo’s favourite locally produced series is Sibongile and the Dlaminis. “It’s so scandalous. I love it.”

AUTHENTIC ATTRACTION
How to attract positive, healthy relationships
There will always be those who are for Valentine’s Day and those who are against it. Simultaneously, relationships either bloom in this time, or they suffer as it inevitably reminds them of what they believe their relationship is lacking.
E
ither way, equipping yourself with some authentic attraction tactics might just assist in your endeavours to engage in more positive, healthy relationships this year. FIRST THINGS FIRST They say wellness starts from within. The same goes for healthy relationships. You need to be content with yourself before you can truly be content in a relationship of any kind. Start at home. Get to know yourself better before you even start getting to know someone else better.
BULLET POINTS AND BOUNDARIES Self-knowledge will allow you to identify what you want, what you need and where your limits lie. It’s important to communicate your beliefs and values as that is what makes you you. List your wants and needs and decide what your boundaries are. Then, discuss it and set boundaries within in the relationship. Any healthy relationship – whether it’s a romantic relationship, a friendship or even a parent-child relationship – has boundaries. Ultimately, this will also keep you from settling for less than what you deserve. Keep in mind that you will also need to respect the other person’s boundaries in return. COMMUNICATION IS KEY Cliché, but true - communication is key in any relationship. Being honest, open and genuine with those you want to include in your life, will go a long way. At the same time, being able to listen to the other person is just as important.

MEMORIES WITH MEANING Any relationship worth keeping will benefit from investing in meaningful activities that both individuals can participate in and enjoy. Join a wine club, volunteer at a charity near and dear to you both or attend a fun event. Obviously, it helps to find that someone who has the same interests than you do. It forms an instant connection that transcends mere conversation and it’s a bond that creates a feeling of belonging. WILLING TO WORK You need to be willing to work to make the relationship a positive and healthy one. Apart from continuous efforts to get to know yourself better and to better yourself, you also need to be willing to work on the relationship. It requires commitment and you need to be willing to accommodate the other person’s needs.
RELAX. DON’T RUSH. Rushing into a relationship due to loneliness or desperation usually results in rampage. Relationships require patience and nurturing. Zaweer Ebrahim from the fragrance brand Playgirl seems to know a thing or two about relationships, (in addition to fragrances). He says: “Remember, attraction is a natural part of life, and it’s different for everyone. Enjoy the journey of getting to know people and what attracts you to them.” We think it rather apt to consider a relationship a journey. So, relax. Don’t rush. Enjoy the journey. H

n the world of art, there is always a lot to learn. From determination and dedication to perspective and passion. Our love affair with art has steadily been growing and every now and then, we come across an artist, an artwork or even an art space that speaks to us. Lately, we particularly enjoy galleries and individuals who include the novices out there, keen to learn and explore the art space. ART TRADER – MAKING ART MORE ACCESSIBLE One such artist is Lisa King, who recently launched her latest gallery space, Art Trader on Regent Road in Cape Town. King’s name is synonymous with art and exquisite South African spaces and at the end of last year, she cut the ribbon to yet another unique art offering: Art Trader. This gallery is testament to Lisa’s dedication to the world of art, with a revolutionary approach to the task of buying and selling art. Here, novice buyers and collectors alike can sell, buy, refresh their collections or simply 1 www.artrader.co.za
come in for a chat and the opportunity to see the latest artworks on offer. That is one of the things we appreciate most about King’s involvement in the art world. She wants to include everyone. “I really wanted to create a space that was open to all, and anyone felt like they could come in and enjoy what exquisite art is all about,” she says. “After two decades of being in galleries and engaging with not only collectors, but also lovers of art, I’ve come to understand that art needs to be more accessible, and needs to be appreciated just for the simple beauty of it.” With artists like Vanessa Berlein, Gavin Larkin, Bassa Aspinall and Fiona Goldthorpe’s works adorning the elegant space’s walls, one can only wonder what’s next. CAN YOU FALL IN LOVE THROUGH ART?
#HelloLifestyle by Renate Engelbrecht Images: Supplied
Meander the streets of Cape Town and potentially meet your match A SAFE PLACE TO FALL IN LOVE If you’re doubting online dating, perhaps IPAF’s placemaking – an innovative approach to transforming public spaces into vibrant community hubs through the power of art – holds more authentic value in the matchmaking scene. Each year, IPAF curates a series of public art projects that not only beautify (and perhaps even romanticise) public spaces, but also stimulate social interaction and enhances urban safety, economic development and cultural exchange. Who knows, maybe this year you might just meet that special someone who shares your interest in art. Read more about the festival on www.hellolifestyle. co.za
M
elissa Cucci, the co-founder and creative director at Baz-Art and the co-founder of IPAF (International Public Art Festival), says: “…Art is not just a mirror held up to society, but a hammer with which to shape it.” We’ve all seen art transform spaces, give voice to untold stories and foster a sense of community. It is the latter – community – that causes us to contemplate. If art has the power to draw likeminded people together, it only makes sense that it has the ability to not only shape society, but also relationships and ultimately, love.
IPAF 2024 starts with activations in The Company’s Garden and unfolds throughout Cape Town’s CBD, inviting art-lovers to immerse themselves in a realm where art meets urban living. It’s the ideal space to meet up with friends, or to meet new people and engage in interesting conversations. “Placemaking is synonymous with safe making,” says Cucci. “By enlivening neglected areas, we’re taking pride in our spaces and making them welcoming for everyone. Placemaking through public art is posited as a beacon of change, potentially marking the beginning of an era where creativity and community collaboration can transform a space and make it more accessible, secure and engaging.” Now, imagine earmarking this happening as your first official
date! Oh, the stories you will tell. Or wait, shall we leave the storytelling to IPAF’s art? REFLECT AND TELL THE STORY Marina Capdevila, an internationally acclaimed Spanish artist who is participating in IPAF 2024 this February, says through her art, she not only seeks to reflect on life’s depth, but also to illuminate and secure the spaces we (as a community) share. Her playful portraits of the elderly in candid, nostalgic moments brighten the streets and spur conversation. It’s storytelling through art. “At IPAF 2024, my aim is to demonstrate how art can transform public spaces into creative havens, where negative stereotypes are dismantled and every generation can walk with a sense of belonging.” ENGAGE AND EXPLORE Whether you meet up with friends, bump into a potential partner or merely engage with the artists at IPAF this year, the artworks and the stories they tell are sure to make some matches through conversation. HONE YOUR KITCHEN SKILLS WITH HEARTSHAPED PIZZAS
Since February is the month of love and many seem to take a more lowkey, family-orientated Valentine’s Day approach, we thought it apt to share a pizza dough recipe with you for those keen on baking heart-shaped pizzas on Valentine’s Day. After all, isn’t sharing the day of love with your family the most precious Valentine’s gift of all? Ina Paarman’s’ pizza dough has never left us hanging. In fact, it’s as easy as onetwo-three and the pizza will be done in a tee. Make it a day or two before and leave it in the fridge to rise slowly. Just punch it down daily and you can keep it for up to three days.
PIZZA DOUGH INGREDIENTS 1 kg (about 6½ cups) bread flour 2 Tbsp (30 ml) sugar 1 Tbsp (15 ml) Ina Paarman’s Seasoned Sea Salt 10g packet instant yeast About 2 cups (500 ml) lukewarm water 2 Tbsp (30 ml) olive oil
18 FEBRUARY - MARCH 2024 l hellolifestyle.co.za
METHOD In a biggish mixing bowl, measure the flour, sugar, salt and yeast. Toss together with your fingers. Add lukewarm water. Bring dough together with one hand and knead to form a soft, pliable dough. Add a little more water depending on consistency. Divide dough into two. Divide olive oil between two big mixing bowls. Turn the dough balls in the oil to coat them lightly. Cover with cling film. Leave to stand at room temperature for an hour or two until the dough has been doubled in size. Knead it once more. If not using straight away, store in the fridge. Once you’ve got the pizza dough into a flat circle, as per the usual pizza-making technique, all you have to do now, is to shape it into a heart. First, pinch and pull the bottom of the circle that it forms the heart’s point. Then, take one finger and push the top part of the circle down towards the centre. Add the toppings, bake and feel the love!

JUDGE YOUR DATE BY THEIR DRINK
#HelloLifestyle by Renate Engelbrecht Images: unsplash.com Sources: reddit.com; brandfuel.com
DOES THE ‘M’ IN MARTINI REALLY STAND FOR ‘MYSTERIOUS’?
H
ave you ever wondered about someone’s personality as they ordered a drink at the bar? Bartenders have been judging books by their covers (or rather dates by their drinks) for the longest of time and while it might be a tongue-in-thecheek topic, we can’t help but wonder if there could be some truth hidden in what your drink choice says about you. Ultimately, it can’t hurt to note these stereotypes before agreeing to a second date…
WHISKEY: Complex, methodical individuals. WHISKEY SOUR: Probably drinking under-age. CRAFT BEER: Hipsters in their 20s trying to be cool. Brandfuel.com describes them as the new wine snobs who are all about the little details. They also often have moustaches.
TEQUILA SHOT: They are comfortable in their own skin.
WINE: According to an opinion piece by an experienced bartender on brandfuel.com, wine drinkers often like to gossip. They’re also lively, fearless, confident and direct. In addition, she says white and red wine drinkers are two different personalities. She describes white wine drinkers as curious, sarcastic and perfectionistic. On the contrary, red wine drinkers are confident individuals who don’t feel the need to change for anyone. “This group has undoubtedly been around the block in the vino world, and they prefer quality above all else.”
G&T: Sophisticated, intellectual, cool people.
FRUITY FROZEN DRINKS: Typically a new drinker.
VODKA: Trend setters who like to be part of the action.
SCOTCH AND WATER: A fifty-plus individual with heart problems.
MARTINI: Clever, mysterious individuals who believe in traditional ideas and know how to get attention. MARGARITA: Let’s party! These people love to dance. They are social butterflies and like to make new friends.
20 FEBRUARY - MARCH 2024 l hellolifestyle.co.za
MAI TAI: Someone who is attracted to exotic people and places, but not enough to get a passport. NEGRONI: A 20-something hipster OLD FASHIONED: Someone who either knows their booze really well, or someone who doesn’t and wants to pretend they do by looking sophisticated. A SHOT WITH A FANCY NAME: Most probably someone who just turned 21. JACK AND COKE: Someone with a fighting spirit.
Do you agree with these stereotypes or have the bartenders gone too far? We’d love to hear from you! Share a screenshot of the article on your Instagram stories, tag us and let’s start a conversation! @hellolifestylemagazine

ne thing we love most about South Africa’s culinary scene is its versatility and the fact that there are so many twists to the traditional offering. Livy’s is one such twist, with its title itself being a French twist on the name Olivia. The meaning symbolises peace and fruitfulness, infused with the elegance and flair of the French language – quite apt when it comes to cuisine. The new addition to Rosebank’s already vibrant food space is all about sipping, savouring and socialising, and since it’s based on the same premises of a range of recently launched padel courts, it poses the ideal opportunity to truly enjoy life to the full. The all-day bistro and bar - the brainchild of the duo that masterminded establishments like Babylon and The Greenhouse - boasts a twist to social club dining, huddling hints of French flair, combining it with the comfort of classics. It makes for the perfect mid-week sundowner spot, while simultaneously also beckoning those keen on a weekend night out.
LET’S TWIST AGAIN
LIVIN’
AT LIVY’S
24 FEBRUARY - MARCH 2024 l hellolifestyle.co.za
The twists even flow over to the interiors, where a grand, old house has been cleverly transformed into a more modern-looking space with French casual-inspired décor. Striking hot pink exterior and pop art elements add some fun, with the designer - like Development and Executive Chef, Tyron Gentry drawing inspiration from his travels. On Saturdays and Sundays live DJs blow some life into the space. Coowner Brad Cilliers says: “We saw a gap in the market for the over-40 crowd who still want to dress up and hit the town somewhere with a fabulous atmosphere just not at 23:00! That’s what Livy’s is all about – an inclusive space where everyone can unwind, enjoy fantastic food and have a memorable time. Of course, the younger crowd is also catered for, but Livy’s would probably be the pre-cursor to their night-clubbing until the sun comes up.”
MEET THE CHEF Chef Tyron Gentry, affectionately known as Chef Ty, has had an impressive start to his culinary career. After graduating, he joined the esteemed Test Kitchen, where Chef Luke Dale Roberts took him under his wing. He climbed the ladder quickly and soon saw himself in the position of Junior Sous Chef. He was part of the Shangri-La pop-up venture in Mauritius alongside Chef Luke Dale Roberts, after which he was promoted to Sous Chef. He then landed a coveted six-month internship at the prestigious JAN Restaurant in Nice, France, owned by renowned South African chef, Jan-Hendrik van der Westhuizen, who is the first South African to have been awarded a Michelin Star. Chef Ty returned to South Africa, joining the team at JAN Studio in Cape Town. After this he was beckoned back to Test Kitchen and later, when his wife was offered a promising opportunity in Johannesburg, he lent his expertise to Shortmarket Club during
its opening. In 2022, he was involved at Carbon, a restaurant that received two stars in the prestigious Eat Out Awards in its very first year. It soon transformed into the renowned Pot Luck Club, another highlight it Chef Ty’s career.
TRIED AND TESTED Livy’s Arancini Balls come highly recommended, with Mozzerella, Basil, Feta and Spiced Tomato making for the perfect starter combo. For a light lunch, the Chicken, Feta & Avo salad is easy going with a Lime Vinaigrette offering a welcome, fresh twist. We also tried the Thick Cut Lamb Chops with House French Fries - simple, but tasteful. Livy’s’ menu offers two platter options – one for two people and one for four.
While the drinks list is rather comprehensive, wines by the glass are very limited. They do have a variety of signature and classic cocktails to choose from, though, with prices that range between R110 and R160 per cocktail. This includes the popular Jungle Bird cocktail, which includes rum, Campari, lime and pineapple juice. H
A keen traveller, the ever-evolving landscape of South Africa’s culinary scene is the perfect space for Chef Ty to continue pushing boundaries and explore new horizons. That’s why his role as Development and Executive Chef at Livy’s is so exciting. He endeavours to create dishes that resonate with the soul, utilising fresh, high-quality ingredients and harmonious flavours. At Livy’s, Chef Ty is responsible for menu development, ensuring high-quality standards, consistency and providing comprehensive staff training. Q @chef_gentry

We love the inside-outside cocktail bar, which is perfect for cocktails and tapas, as well as their impressive wine list. They also offer a food and wine pairing experience, where their famous sommelier, Matheas will guide you through the private offering. Oh, and as if that’s not enough, they also have homemade chocolates, cakes and desserts to indulge in and their homemade Gelato is to die for! FOR A TIPPLE THE BULL RUN Soak in the incredible city surroundings at The Bull Run while sipping on a decadent (or less decadent) cocktail. Located in the heart of Sandton, this destination offers unmatched views of the city, coupled with handcrafted cocktails. Of course, pairing your cocktail with a steak will only add to the experience. The Bull Run also has an eclectic wine list from which you can choose your tipple, but it’s the we-mean-business bar that takes the cake. Dollar Bar offers patrons their very own craft beer, beautiful wines, G&Ts and more – all while taking in Maude Street’s sights and sounds. 1 www.thebullrun.co.za Q @thebullrunsandton TASHAS CAFÉ We do love it when there’s a good excuse for dining out and since we’re allowed to do so as Valentine’s Day is a day for celebrating love, we’re adding tashas at The MARC to our list. Why? Well, they recently introduced a Bites and Drinks menu, inspired by the Café Society culture. It offers the perfect after-hours escape from Sandton’s ever-buzzing streets, allowing you to unwind with a postwork cocktail, glass of wine and delicious bite-sized snacks. Try the beer battered cauliflower with tarragon mayo, paired with Mullineux Kloof Street Chenin Blanc. Or, opt for the Burrata Caprese and pair it with Waterford Rosemary. The sliced ribeye with horseradish and chive butter (to share) is another menu option to indulge in, and it goes very well with Sutherland’s Pinot Noir. SALON
BY LUKE DALE ROBERTS
JOURNEYING INTO THE MIND OF A CULINARY GENIUS In the heart of culinary brilliance, SALON steered by the visionary Chef Luke Dale Roberts - unfurls a gastronomic tapestry that transcends borders and tantalises the taste buds. Echoing the glory days of Luke's renowned establishment, The Test Kitchen, the SALON menu emerges as a jubilant homage to global influences and flavours inspired by Chef Luke's rich culinary journey. 38 FEBRUARY - MARCH 2024 l hellolifestyle.co.za
N
estled within the Silo Building of the Old Biscuit Mill in Woodstock, SALON's interiors - envisioned by the acclaimed Maurice Paliaga - seamlessly blend contemporary elements with textures that pay tribute to the traditional European salon concept and the building's rich heritage dating back to the early 1900s. Guests are welcomed into SALON through a resplendent golden portal, a modern gateway leading to a space adorned with Victorianstyle floors and marble-topped bistro tables, exuding an unmistakable Parisian charm. A GLOBAL CULINARY JOURNEY Immersive, vibrant and tantalising, SALON's journey menu beckons diners on a globe-trotting adventure, featuring signature dishes from nine countries that have left an indelible mark on Chef Luke's culinary repertoire. The odyssey commences in South Africa with a Jalapeño Mignonette Oyster appetiser, setting the stage for an epicurean exploration that spans continents and destroys all expectations of a traditional meal.
ENGLAND A THEATRICAL PRELUDE The journey unfolds with a whimsical dish of Pork Scratching and Guinness Foam, paying homage to Chef Luke’s English roots. The Guinness Foam, theatrically presented in a traditional English beer mug, confuses the senses and sets expectations of the next course at new heights. PAIRING: Maredsous Beer - A classical Belgian blonde with complex flavours and a touch of bitterness.
MEXICO A PHILHARMONIC WORK OF FLAVOURS The Chipotle Tuna Caesar, served with smoked pineapple, coriander snow, tamale and a chipotle dressing creates a harmonious Mexican melody. PAIRING: Saladito Cocktail - A traditional Mexican concoction of Mezcal, honey syrup, and lime juice, adorned with an egg whitelike foam and a hint of cayenne pepper.

HIGHGATE OSTRICH FARM If you’re ever in Oudtshoorn, a visit to an ostrich farm is a must. Established in 1938, Highgate Ostrich Show Farm was the world’s first, finest and most original ostrich show farm. Evidently, it boasts a lot of history in addition to the special tours and package deals available. We stayed at Mooiplaas, the farm next door and their guide took us on the tour and told us all about these fascinating birds, their eggs and the unique qualities of ostrich leather. 1 www.highgate.co.za Q @highgateostrichfarm CANGO CAVES The Cango Caves, just around the corner from Oudtshoorn, is another must-visit attraction. While the Heritage Tour isn’t as informative as one would wish, taking the time to walk through the information centre and watching the video screening after your tour will give you ample insight into the size of the caves and how they formed. Seeing something like these caves in real life is quite remarkable and it certainly reminded us of how small we are as human beings. Bookings are essential and you can enjoy a light lunch before or after the tour. The Heritage Tour departs on the hour every hour daily and costs R170 per adult and R120 per child. There is also an adventure tour, which visits the deepest sections of Cango One, departing every hour on the half-hour daily from 09:30 to 15:30. This tour costs R240 per adult and R170 per child and is not ideal for those who suffer from claustrophobia. 1 www.cango-caves.co.za Q @cango_caves

ound tables and comfy chairs lure young and old to engage with its offering, celebrating life and good company while being seated either outside, under high ceilings adorned with hanging plants, or amidst the aromas of freshly baked pastries and perfectly brewed coffee. The space is lit up naturally with large windows and stack doors, allowing entry from all sides. Here, old friends meet and new relationships form as patrons spend quality time over Cortados and comfort foods with a twist. Freddo Café’s menu is filled with favourites like the traditional Chicken Mayo on Rye, but here and there you’ll spot something trendy and totally different to the norm. This includes the sumptuous Burrata & Parma Ham Pizza, which is to die for. From signature sandwiches, light meals and pastas, to Freezos and Cold Freddos, you can expect something for everyone. The glass-covered counter at the north-eastern entrance - filled with delectable pastries - instantly caught our eye and as we stepped inside, we could barely contain our excitement, impulsively planning our take-away desserts for when we depart. The options are endless with Freddo-glazed doughnuts, classic or pistachio croissants, custard bear claws, cinnamon swirls and toasted croissants with a scoop of gelato. You can also opt for the cake of the day or homemade Tiramisu with Savoiardi Biscuits, Espresso, Coffee Liqueur and Mascarpone. Just beyond these pastries, the impressive coffee machine serves as an important part of Freddo Café’s décor. In fact, the owner, George disclosed that he had bought the coffee machine even before launching the café, which shows you where Freddo Café’s priorities lie. In the end, we couldn’t leave without trying a signature cappuccino and we opted for the Condensed Milk Cappuccino, which we can highly recommend. Alternatively, they also have a Chocolate Cappuccino and Coconut Cappuccino – something different to what you would normally find elsewhere. P.S. Freddo Café boasts the perfect spot for digital nomads looking to shake things up when it comes to their working environment. There is a long couch against the one wall with plugs for those who would like to charge their laptops and a larger table with fixed charging sockets offer the ideal space for informal brunch or lunch meetings. C
lub Med has been synonymous with allinclusive family travel for years. Now, for the first time ever, the brand is setting foot on African soil with a resort concept different to their norm: The beauty and bliss of the South African coastline, as well as an unforgettable African safari. In the not too far future, Club Med fans wouldn’t have to travel abroad for the ultimate all-inclusive holiday as there will be just that on their doorstep. A collaborative partnership was signed towards the end of last year, with a development by Club Med and the Collins Residential Consortium soon to break ground. This serves as one of South Africa’s larger hospitality projects and is bound to create a large number of short- and long-term jobs during both the construction phase and the realisation phase.
Apart from this impressive commitment to the South African labour market, there is also lots to look forward to for holidaymakers. The resort will be based on the North Coast of Kwazulu-Natal (also known as the Dolphin Coast) where warm weather and warm water can be expected throughout the year. It will be conveniently located in proximity to the King Shaka International Airport – internationally acclaimed as the best Regional Airport in Africa since 2015 by the International Skytrax awards. BLISSFUL BEACH AND SAFARI EXPERIENCES AWAIT While Club Med Tinley will still stay true to the brand’s overall theme of elegance, it will also carry a strong sense of African inspiration when it comes to the interiors, entertainment and even the food and beverage
offering. Location, climate and culture will subtly be woven into the interiors and you can look forward to spotting these elements in the Premium rooms or Exclusive Collection spaces. Being pioneers when it comes to beach and mountain holidays, Club Med’s KZN resort will offer guests both beach and bush accommodation options. In addition to the ultimate Dolphin Coast beach experience, guests will also be able to stay at a Big-5 Game Reserve, located 3.5 hours by road or a swift 40-minute flight from the resort. The 80room lodge will be developed in conjunction with the beach resort and both accommodation options will be developed to Club Med standards.
KEEPING UP WITH CLUB MED Club Med’s resorts always have something going on, whether it’s live entertainment or fun activities for the whole family. At Club Med Tinley it will be no different. In fact, come 2026 and the opening of the resort, you can expect to engage in all kinds of activities, including a world-class kids’ club (for kids from 4 months of age), sailing, surfing, diving, snorkelling, the very first Surf School at Club Med (for adults and kids), padel, beach rugby, beach volley, bocce ball fields, archery, team building activities and a wellness centre. Of course, there will also be more tranquil options to indulge in with the resort’s spa, a fitness centre that will offer various classes daily, a yoga school and an adult-only Zen pool and bar where you can escape the lively escapades of kids having a blast. 5-STAR LUXURY IN THE CAPE
OUR JOURNEY THROUGH TWO OF CAPE TOWN’S MOST ICONIC HOTELS
When it comes to five-star travel in Cape Town, there are two iconic hotels that stand as individual marvels, yet share a rich tapestry woven with history, culinary brilliance, tranquil escapes and some of the most exquisite experiences the city has to offer. #HelloLifestyle by Justyn Spinner Images: Supplied
THE TAJ HOTEL, CAPE TOWN
O
ur most recent stay at the Taj Hotel in Cape Town was nothing short of a royal experience. Nestled in the heart of the city, this iconic five-star establishment effortlessly blends contemporary design with historic charm, housed in the former South African Reserve Bank office on Wale Street, opposite the lush Company Gardens. Upon entering the grand lobby, the rich history of the building with its stunning marble columns envelops you, setting the tone for an immersive and memorable stay. The 176 luxury rooms, each offering panoramic views of either the city or the iconic Table Mountain, provide a sense of opulence fit for an emperor.
DINING AT ITS PINNACLE: BOMBAY BRASSERIE Undoubtedly, the culinary crown jewel of the Taj Hotel is Bombay Brasserie, an authentic and incredible fine-dining Indian restaurant. Specialising in North Indian cuisine with a dash of Cape Malay influence, the menu takes diners on a gastronomic journey through the vibrant streets of India. We highly recommend trying the Experience Set Menu - a culinary adventure worth embarking on. Start with the Ambersari Tiger Prawns and Adraki Lamb Chop, each a burst of flavour. The mains elevate the experience with a slowcooked duck breast in a Malay-infused curry sauce and a Chicken Tikka Masala bathed in a silky tomato sauce infused with a secret blend of spices. WHILST IN BETHULIE
GET LOST IN A BOOK (hotel)
A ROYAL TIME AMIDST PAGES AND VINYLS South Africa’s only Book Hotel is a book in itself. It draws you in, captivates the imagination and in the end, it leaves you longing for more South African stories and traditional cuisine.
F
ancy being greeted by a ginger cat rubbing herself all over you, then hopping into your car and settling comfortably on your luggage? This, after you’ve walked around the hotel building to find the entrance, only to discover that there’s no front door. There’s nothing ordinary about this place, that’s for sure. In fact, guests have to venture into the backyard and call out for someone to open the door and show them the way. You guessed it, Bethulie’s Book Hotel has no lobby either. It's all part and parcel of one of the quirkiest hotels in Africa, though. Therein, and in so much more, lies Royal Hotel Bethulie’s charm. BOOK IN FOR BOOKS AND ‘BOEREKOS’ Forget about signposting. Once you get to Bethulie, a southern Freestate town on the Gariep Route, ask the first person you see for directions to the corner of Voortrekker and Joubert Street. That is where you will stumble upon South Africa’s only Book Hotel – a hotel with a collection of 120 000 books and 80 000 vinyl records! At first glance, the passage walls appear to be wallpapered until you realise that it’s literally lined with bookshelves from floor to ceiling. As is the dining room and all the other kuierkamers (gathering rooms). 62 FEBRUARY - MARCH 2024 l hellolifestyle.co.za
Over supper (true South African ‘boerekos’), owner Anthony Hocking urges guests to pick out a vinyl record of choice for the playlist of the evening. He is warm and welcoming, a storyteller extraordinaire, acclaimed author and a history buff himself. PARADISE FOR BIBLIOPHILES Happily ensconced in floppy armchairs, the turntable rumbling and the fire crackling in the fireplace (the Freestate gets cold in winter), we noticed a few blank canvases in some of the painting nooks while we were marveling at all the books. With a slight twinkle in his eye Anthony explained that these were the portraits of ghosts. Friendly ones, he hastily added.
Do a tour of Anglo-Boer War sites on the outskirts of the town, guided by The Royal Hotel, Bethulie’s owner, Anthony Hocking.
Visit the Gariep Dam, South Africa’s biggest dam.
Bibliophiles and word nerds like us often imagine that paradise is a kind of library. If you want a slice of heaven on earth, as well as some countryside charm coupled with interesting conversation, the Royal Hotel, Bethulie - South Africa’s only Book Hotel – is a must for your bucket list. P.S. Bethulie is the perfect stopover almost exactly halfway between Gauteng and Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth), or between Durban and Cape Town. H

ROUGH IT WITH RUGGED WHEELS FOR HIM With many parents fulfilling different roles in the family, it’s inevitable that dad will have different needs to mom’s when it comes to their modes of transport. The Toyota Land Cruiser and the Prado have both always been firm favourites and in August last year, the all-new Land Cruiser Prado was unveiled. Apart from this new version of the Prado featuring rougher lines, it certainly has a soft side too – like a dad. The large SUV’s design fuses traditional and contemporary (much like modern families), employing almost nostalgic, horizontal lines inspired by Land Cruisers of old, delivering a theme of functional beauty. Still, the muscular wheel arches and strong lines epitomise a sense of strength and subtle ruggedness. WORTH KNOWING ABOUT THE LAND CRUISER PRADO: It shares its underpinnings with the Land Cruiser 300, with a TNGA-F ladder-frame chassis, 50% more rigid that the current generation Prado. Catering to various global markets, it will employ a variety of turbocharged petrol and diesel-based powertrains. The interior will feature dual digital screens for the instrument cluster and multimedia system. Due to be introduced in South Africa in the second quarter of 2024.
WORTH KNOWING ABOUT THE FORD PUMA: Powered by multiple award-winning 1.0L EcoBoost engine, the feisty Ford delivers 92KW and 170Nm, matched to seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. The boot boasts 80 Litres storage space with a lid that can hide your duffle bag. ABS, Electronic Brake Assist, Electronic Stability Control, Hill Launch Assist, Tyre Pressure Monitoring, Auto High Beam headlight activation and Lane Keeping System. From R569 900 for the Puma Titanium, while the Puma ST-Line Vignale starts at R613 900.
RUN THE HOUSEHOLD WITH WHEELS FOR HER For mom, who is usually the one running errands, running the household and driving the kids around, the Toyota Corolla Cross is the perfect match. Last year, it proved itself as Toyota’s most popular passenger vehicle. The bonus: It is locally produced. The Toyota Corolla is a brilliant blend of business and pleasure, off-road and on-road, space and styling, comfort and convenience – a vehicle for moms who do it all. Wouldn’t you agree that a car says so much more than the traditional bunch of red roses? H 64 FEBRUARY - MARCH 2024 l hellolifestyle.co.za
CLICKETY-CLACK
#HelloLifestyle by Renate Engelbrecht Images: Renate Engelbrecht
...there’s a steam train on the track
GOOD TO KNOW: - The train meanders through Hartenbos before crossing the Hartenbos River Mouth. From there it runs along the beautiful coastline, past Reebok and Tergniet, with some of the most spectacular ocean views. Then it descends and crosses the Little Brak River Mouth bridge, after which it stops at the Great Brak River Station. - The stopover at Great Brak River Station is about one hour long and there is a restaurant where train travellers can get a quick bite or drink before the train driver’s whistle signals the return to Hartenbos. - Tickets range between R295 for the passenger coach and R2400 for a private 6-person compartment. - The next trips take place on 27 January, 24 February, over the Easter Holidays (23, 24, 25, 29, 30 and 31 March) and then again on 27 April.
T
he feeling you get when a vintage steam train slowly comes to a halt at the station is hard to describe.. Even when you did not grow up with trains, a strange nostalgia sets in and you can’t help but dream about travelling back in time. Steam train experiences have been gaining momentum as a tourist attraction locally and Southern Cape Railway is one such railway company succeeding in igniting the feeling of nostalgia as their trains pull into the station.
It was a cool December morning when we arrived at the Hartenbos Station next to Hennie’s Restaurant. Ticket holders stood waiting in anticipation, and we unavoidably indulged in our guilty pleasure of people watching. A train station – like an airport – is one of the best places for people watching, we’ve found. Isn’t it incredible how a mutual interest like travelling by train can bring people from all walks of life onto one platform? We love watching things unfold as people go about their travel habits. For us, coffee was priority and although it
was nothing special, the café next to Hennie’s could put the coffeeholics among us out of our misery. As we waited for the train’s arrival, we watched little feet eagerly jumping up and down and parents nervously pulling curious kids further away from the tracks. The excitement was real. As the class 24 locomotive no. 3655, named Jenny pulled into the station, the oohs and ahs echoed amidst the clouds of steam, whistling and clicketyclack. Designed by Dr. MM Loubscher, Chief Mechanical Engineer of the South African
Railways, Jenny was built by the North British Locomotive Company of Glasgow in 1943. She’d previously been used for Atlantic Rail’s tourist train on the scenic railway line between Cape Town and Simon’s Town. Now, she hauls the train between Hartenbos and Great Brak River on the Garden Route. The train’s different coaches date back to between 1920 and 1936, making it a magnificent step back in time. The interior has been beautifully restored and they continuously bring in vintage chairs, couches and more to add to the vintage feel of the train’s interior. H

THE BOLAND MEANS BUSINESS PROPERTY IS BOOMING IN CAPE TOWN
INDUSTRIAL AND RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY IN CAPE TOWN The Mother City’s roads and infrastructure are well maintained, which is one of the most important factors to consider, especially when it comes to property investment in the area. According to Urban Growth, an independent property investment company operating in South Africa, there are many other aspects that contribute to Cape Town’s positive industrial property growth specifically: - There is a limited supply of industrial property in the area. - The industrial property sector has been the best-performing sector in South Africa over the past year. - Tenants require protection from loadshedding and the financials for off-grid industrial properties make better sense, which is why Urban Growth’s portfolio consists of mainly off-grid, Grade A industrial properties in the Western Cape. In addition to industrial property, residential developments are also offering good value to investors. Urban Growth’s Director and Co-founder, Ross Gregory says: “South Africa, in general, offers good value in terms of property – both residential and industrial – but the Western Cape location adds enormously to the development’s value.” 66 FEBRUARY - MARCH 2024 l hellolifestyle.co.za
Cape Town has proven to be a popular South African destination, not only for local and international travel, but also as a place to live and do business in. BOLAND OVAL Staytus Collection’s latest endeavour, Boland Oval, is proof that residential developments prove invaluable in the Cape. They recently announced the launch of the project, which is a mixed-use development aiming to redefine lifestyle living in the heart of Paarl. Ultimately, it is the company’s mission to elevate the standards of urban living, with quality, aesthetics and functionality being three of the main pillars of the development. It promises a sophisticated, modern, harmonious living environment for residents. Boland Oval is strategically located in the flourishing Drakenstein Municipality, offering convenient access to key landmarks and business districts. The development will feature spacious apartments with a layout that integrates the Boland Park international
cricket field and beautiful views over the Paarl mountains. It will also be supported by 6000m² retail space, a high-performance sports centre, medical facilities and a fivestory hotel and conferencing complex. Boland Oval’s apartment blocks will include pet-friendly blocks as well, and state-of-theart green technologies will form an integral part of the development, ensuring a minimal ecological footprint while also maximising energy efficiency. The groundbreaking endeavour by Staytus Collection showcases their commitment to creating exceptional spaces that seamlessly bring innovation, sustainability and community together. 1 www.bolandoval.co.za 1 www.urbangrowth.co.za

FINANCIAL PLANNING
HOW TO FIND ‘THE ONE’
W
hen it comes to financial planning, having the right financial adviser by your side is almost as important as having the perfect life partner. Finding the right person to help you manage your family’s financial affairs could pose as quite the challenge. That’s why we thought it well to share some ‘dating tips’ (with some guidance from Consult by Momentum’s General Manager, Keith Naidoo) in your search for ‘the one’: PRIORITIES AND PURPOSE Your financial adviser would need to understand your requirements, needs and financial goals. A good financial adviser will listen to you carefully and aim to understand your dreams, challenges, phase of life and current circumstances. Then, they will take the time to tailor make a plan around this, to suit your lifestyle, priorities and purpose. COMPATIBILITY You need to be able to trust your financial adviser and their character and values should be aligned with yours. You need to be compatible and it should be someone that you not only respect, but also trust with your most precious possession: Your family.
CERTIFICATION ‘The one’ would need to have the required qualifications in order to qualify as your personal financial planner and adviser. You need to see their FSCA approvals, licences and certifications before even looking their way. Ask for references and consider using someone who has strong backing from well-known national brokerages or financial service providers. EXPERIENCE Find a financial planner who has been in the industry for a while; someone who has gained some experience. This experience also needs to align with what your specific financial needs and goals are. ZOOM IN The financial adviser who could be ‘the one’ could either be a generalist, investmentorientated, a fiduciary specialist, or specialise in short-term insurance or healthcare. Zoom in and take a closer look at what the adviser’s focus area is, before you commit. NETWORKS When you get married, you marry into a family. When you commit to a financial
#HelloLifestyle by Renate Engelbrecht Images:Supplied
adviser, you pretty much marry their network and support system. Make sure you know where your financial adviser is investing your money and ask for fund fact sheets and details of companies they recommend. Just like you don’t want to marry into the wrong family, you don’t want your financial adviser to invest your hard-earned money in a Ponzi scheme. FEES Ask about the fee structure and how the financial adviser earns money. Be sure that the service they render is worth the fees they charge. COMMUNICATION Like in any relationship, communication is key. A financial adviser who can explain difficult financial terms and complicated offerings in a simple way, certainly leans toward being ‘the one.’ AVAILABILITY Your financial adviser needs to be accessible. After all, you entrust that person with your money and your family’s livelihood. The least they could do is be willing to meet with you on a regular basis, review your circumstances frequently and adjust your portfolio accordingly, and help ensure that you are on target to meet your financial goals.
