I’ve been sitting with the word ‘community’ for a while now. It’s one of those things we all have in common – wanting to be accepted, loved and included within a community. It’s also the one thing that many of the hospitality establishments and destinations I visit have that will call me back, time and again. If a place doesn’t have that welcoming sense of community, I won’t return.

Olivia Wilson says: “Community is the beautiful bond that connects us, creating a sense of belonging and support.” Kirsten Jones’ statement boldly adds to that: “Community is the foundation to success.”

I’ve seen it time and again: When you feel appreciated and welcome; part of a community (even if it’s just a temporary one) you’re bound to make a success of what you’re busy with, no matter where you find yourself. In essence, community is kindness. And for me, kindness is one of the most precious ways in which we can show love to those we hold dear, but even more so, to strangers.

While we might be celebrating Valentine’s Day in February, I strongly believe that love stretches far beyond a bunch of roses and chocolates. And, since March marks Human Rights Day in South Africa, I encourage you to let your love linger a little longer than just on Valentine’s. Let’s love by being kind to one another this year. As Mary Anne Radmacher says: “As we work to create light for others, we naturally light our own way.”

In this edition of Hello Lifestyle Magazine, I chat to radio presenter, Rozanne McKenzie about her take on love (and life). We also dive into various South African food, drink and travel destinations where you are bound to find a feeling of community and kindness.

May this year also throw opportunities at you where you can show kindness to others.

R zanne McKenzie:

An honest take on love, life, humanity, If not love, then grace

gratefulness

and grace

Love. It’s such a universal word, yet sometimes, such a difficult topic. It is something we all give and receive differently. In fact, books have been written about the various love languages and the challenges within relationships where one partner’s love language is gifts and the other’s, touch.

For radio presenter, MC and media skills trainer, Rozanne McKenzie, love is “a sharing of yourself with others without any kind of concern that they are going to love you back.” This selfless kind of love is something you learn to feel and appreciate over time. It’s the kind of love she herself only felt for first time when her children were born. “I want to love them so hard that what they put out into the world in terms of their personalities and in terms of how they love other people, is something that I can look at every day and be proud of.”

As we enter the month of love in February, but also celebrate Human Rights Day in March,

we can’t help but wonder if that isn’t the kind of love we should be giving, instead of rose petals and bubbly-filled flutes? A ripple effect kind of love that touches not only those you hold dear, but also individuals outside of your love bubble. Those you sometimes pass without even noticing.

BE MORE HUMAN

Rozanne is convinced that lack of respect and tolerance for one another is one of the biggest challenges in South Africa. “I don’t need to like you, but I can actually be tolerant towards you and I can be respectful of you. I think there is a lack of respect for each other. It’s on the roads, it’s littering in the streets, it’s closing the door when you can see someone’s running towards the lift.” According to her, it’s in the little things we do that we will find (and inspire) humanity.

“I think in South Africa there is so much about each other that we still don’t know,” Jacaranda FM’s The Drive with Rob and Roz’s co-host says. In fact, she believes we’re also not making enough of an effort to find out more about

It's in the little things we do that we will find (and inspire) humanity.

each other. Her theory is that people never recovered from the Covid years when it comes to being tolerant towards each other. “It feels like we are seeing more and more intolerance, and a lot less love these days,” she says. While Rozanne is not love-festing every day, she believes that small changes and considering where people are coming from and why they are behaving in certain ways, will already go a long way. Referring to when lockdown got lifted, she says: “Initially – in the beginning when we were allowed back out and into each other’s spaces – we were so grateful for that human connection, but now we’re just done with it. We’re not behaving very humanly towards each other, and I think that is something we all need to work on, myself included.”

THE SEESAW OF SELFLOVE

Similar to how loving others is a work in progress, self-love is a constant journey too. “I feel that I am at a point now that I wasn’t at five or six years ago,” Rozanne says. “A point where – on most days – I am quite okay with myself. How I feel; how I look. And then I will preach that to the whole world! ‘Love yourself!’ ‘Wear that bikini!’ But then, sometimes I would look at myself in the mirror and go: ‘Mmm, maybe you need to lay off the pasta.’”

She admits that she is not 100% evolved as a self-loving human being. “I don’t always wake up radiating a mantra of ‘I am beautiful, I love myself, I am perfect.’ No. It’s a constant work in progress.”

AN INTROVERTED EXTROVERT

Rozanne has always been very open about her struggle with depression – often her downfall when it comes to self-love and self-acceptance. According to her, it’s a condition that smuggles with your head. “It starts to make you doubt your achievements, your self-worth,” she admits. “I think getting to a place of self-love is a journey. I’m not there yet. I think I’m better some days than others. But the days that I am full of self-love and pride for how far I’ve come in life and with life are now even more special, because I’ve been down and now, I am okay. It’s like a seesaw.”

For Rozanne, her training is the serotonin she doesn’t have. “I do train a lot because I like how it makes me feel.” While she says people might perceive her as a big extrovert - which she is to a certain extent - she often reaches a point where she can’t hear people’s voices anymore. Then she needs quiet. “I can’t even have the radio playing in my car or listen to music. I think what I’ve done to look after myself in that way is that when I’ve identified that I am overstimulated, I just take time for me – even when it’s ten minutes in my car where it’s quiet – before I go into the house and deal with Chris and the kids and all the things that they need or all the things that they want to tell me because they’ve had a brilliant day and I am the first person that they want to tell. But, sometimes my brain isn’t ready for that, so I’ve given myself grace. If I’m overstimulated, I take some time for myself and after that, I can deal with other things.”

Rozanne says she’s discovered the simple pleasure of putting her phone on ‘do not disturb’ for an hour. “I don’t want a Whatsapp, I don’t want a notification, I don’t want a phone call. I just want to be with Rozanne, in my brain – whether it’s a good day with good thoughts or a bad day with lots

of negative thoughts – I just want to sit in that.”

FEELING LOVED

“What makes me feel loved by people close to me is the ability to be myself. With all my flaws, all my insecurities and all the things that I might not like about myself,” Rozanne says. In fact, those flaws she sees in herself are often the reasons why those close to her love her. “So, it starts to be a thing of you know what, maybe I am okay. Maybe I don’t have to be so hard on myself because I am not who I want to be. If someone who is very special to me thinks that I’m okay, then I am okay,” she concludes.

CELEBRATING HUMAN RIGHTS DAY

Rozanne McKenzie comes from an era where everyone didn’t have basic human rights. “There were places we couldn’t live. There were people we couldn’t love. Even my grandparents were not fully accepted as fullblown citizens of this country.” She says today, South Africans can celebrate the fact that everyone has the same rights. “Constitutionally, we should all have the same basic rights, because that is what the bill of human rights says. There are still a lot of inequalities in this country and until those are addressed, I don’t think we are going to get to a point where we are accepting of each other. But let’s at least tolerate each other. Let’s be mindful of what other people’s circumstances are and maybe not judge so quickly.”

She adds that we should celebrate moments that bring us together. “Like sport; like some South African going out into the world and doing really well. We’re all so collectively proud of that person and that’s the feeling I think we need to strive for. Not just when we win a World Cup or when Dricus [du Plessis] beats someone. That is something we need to take forward with us.

That feeling of ‘I am proudly South African’ and ‘I accept the humanity of my fellow South Africans.’”

HOPEFUL ABOUT SA

While humanity and humility are always a work in progress, Rozanne is hopeful about South Africa. She remembers a recent interview with Reynardt Hugo, the host of the documentary series, Net Mens. “The timing of it was actually quite spooky,” she says. “We had a scheduled interview with him for Wednesday, 4 December. The reason why we had the scheduled interview, was because that evening at 20:00, the Net Mens episode about Jan Bloukaas was going to go out on kykNET. In the early hours of that Wednesday morning, the news broke that Jean du Plessis (Jan Bloukaas) had lost his battle to brain cancer.” They still did the interview with Reynardt and Rozanne says it was clear that regardless of how the disease was ravaging Jean, he just wanted to make that last album. “The album came out on the Friday before he passed away. But it gave me so much hope,” Rozanne says. “…Even in that moment of going through so much, Jean still ended up doing what he loved with the people that he loved. Other South African artists around him who wanted to help his dream come true. It just made me realise that there is so much to be grateful for, because you don’t really think your health is that much of an issue until you have a health issue. You don’t know what you’ve got ’til it’s gone. That interview definitely

showed me what is possible if you set your mind to it. Also, if you were put on this earth to do something, you will do that thing until the day you die.”

Rozanne McKenzie’s ways of staying in sync with not only her inner self, but also those around her, is what makes her such a standout, relatable media personality. Whether it’s in her highs or her lows, she lives and loves life with humility and grace, encouraging those around her to do the same. H

WALL PILATES

IS IT REALLY WORTH THE HYPE?

Have you noticed how Wall Pilates has been taking over social media algorithms? Is it worth the hype? Our writer, Victoria Hill went on a four-week journey to review the process and give you the inside scoop…

TRYING OUT THE LATEST FITNESS TREND

It was a hot summer’s morning when I laid down on my makeshift Pilates mat - a pool towel I discovered in the cupboard. I’d found a free Wall Pilates routine from wallpilates.com, complete with descriptions and video links. My initial workout plan included basic sits, push-ups, roll-downs, planking, squats, side planks with leg lifts and marching bridges. All this, against my trusty wall.

While it all seems relatively easy, do not be fooled! By the end of the first workout, I was sweating, my abs were burning, my glutes were cramping, my thighs were shaking, my feet were aching and my arms were trembling.

YOU, YOUR MAT AND YOUR WALL AGAINST THE WORLD

Wall Pilates is basically a free version of traditional Pilates. Instead of metal bars and intricate-looking bed contraptions, it’s just you, your mat and your wall against the world. Ultimately, the wall adds extra resistance, forcing your muscles to work harder than when mere gravity was at play.

The modified fitness technique is still considered Pilates as it uses the same foundations as the traditional form. However, Wall Pilates allows for accessibility, individualisation and different levels of advancement.

PROS AND CONS

Suffering from scoliosis, I was concerned about my ability to perform certain exercise routines. However, I was pleasantly surprised at how the exercises required no high-impact movements. In fact, did you know that Pilates was initially invented for

rehabilitation? Evidently, Pilates (and Wall Pilates) has been designed to be gentle on your joints, muscles and physical injuries.

Wall Pilates is said to target core strengthening, perfect alignment, balance and posture, which means controlling and concentrating on each movement. This makes you more aware of which muscles to use, as well as how to control your breathing to aid the movement.

However, following a free online training programme, I often just did the exercises, hoping for the best. Not having an expert around to guide me, I was worried about doing more harm than good when the alignment of my knees and ankles was out, for instance.

IS IT WORTH PURSUING?

Reflecting on the four-week journey, one month’s Wall Pilates is not enough to see a noticeable change. Whilst I feel stronger in my abs and glutes, I do not see a permanent six pack or peachy shape to flaunt. You could feel a change in strength within four to five weeks, but you’ll probably only see a change in six to eight weeks. One should only expect a notable difference after twelve weeks of regular training.

With this in mind, I will probably continue with Wall Pilates for two more months and then scrutinise myself in the mirror to see if it was worth it, or simply a fad. H

HOBBIES & HABITS

Instilling new habits in your life comes with its challenges. In fact, most of us fall back into bad habits every now and again. Trying to instil new habits within a relationship can be even trickier, as a partner who struggles to adopt some of the positive habits you’ve agreed on as a couple, might frustrate the other. Still, partners need to stick together and encourage one another to embrace whichever healthy or positive habits they want to instil. According to Proof of Health’s article on medium.com, there are certain strategies for building good habits together:

Start small and focus on being consistent. Big leaps might be discouraging, while smaller daily leaps will become routine more easily.

Make it fun. Ensure your better half sticks with the new habit by making it enjoyable.

BITTER WINTER

He’s recently received a Naledi Lifetime Achievement Theatre Award and he is known as one of the country’s most revered playwrights. Now, Paul Slabolepszy brings yet another production to stage: A heartfelt exploration of the artist’s life.

Bitter Winter is a powerful play set to celebrate the legends of South African theatre while simultaneously shining a light on the new generation of rising stars. Following an interview with Paul Slab himself, it’s clear that the production will also serve as a mentoring play, highlighting the importance of mutual respect across generations, and the value of experience.

André Odendaal plays the classical Afrikaans actor, Jean-Louis Lourens, who is in his mid-70s and dying. Fresh from a sold-out run of Rapela and Kill Move Paradise, Oarabile Ditsele takes on the role of an up-and-coming television and film star,

BRIDGING THE GENERATIONAL GAP AND FINDING COMMON GROUND THROUGH THE ART OF THEATRE

#HelloLifestyle by Renate Engelbrecht Images: supplied

Prosper Mangane. While the two characters have a shared profession, they grew up into their acting careers rather differently and as the production pans out, Prosper’s youthful energy and adventurous spirit gives JeanLouis a new perspective.

For Slabolepszy, Bitter Winter is a tribute to South African talent. “[It] is my love song to the theatre,” he says. “I’ve always wanted to do a play where an old actor told his story.” He contrasts the rawness, dedication and experience of live theatre - his first love - with the fast pace and instant fame often brought about by television and social media. “A lot of young actors think they know everything. But those actors with 50 years of experience… they know the ropes. I wanted something that would demonstrate the depth of theatre and what it can give you.”

Even though much of it deals with the wintery side of life, Slabolepszy’s new play is

also filled with his well-known wit and hints of South African culture. “Wherever we’ve been, there is a dynamism - a taste of South Africa,” he says. That dynamism has been engrained in Bitter Winter too, with authentic, yet universal South African stories, told by talented local actors. In the end, Slabolepszy hopes that the production lives up to his vision of a warm, human story, intertwined with memorable comedy.

Director, Lesedi Jobs, says: “Through this heart-warming tribute to the resilience of artists, we are reminded that every stage of life holds value and that every soul deserves dignity.”

Bitter Winter debuts at Pieter Toerien’s Studio Theatre at Montecasino on 20 February and will run until the 16th of March 2025. Tickets are available through Webtickets and selected Pick ’n Pay stores. A portion of each ticket sale will go toward supporting the Theatre Benevolent Fund. H

ART GALLERIES TO EXPLORE

#HelloLifestyle by Victoria Hill Images: Victoria Hill

ACROSS SOUTH AFRICA

GRAHAM CONTEMPORARY

The stark white floor, ceiling and walls of the Graham Contemporary Art Gallery stand out against the rest of Hyde Park Corner Shopping Centre. However, the artworks adorning the walls add vibrancy to the space. Swirls of colour have art lovers in awe as they move from one frame to the next.

It’s an impactful mixture of artworks by emerging, mid-career and established artists. Watercolours, figurative and abstract paintings, sculptures, installations and photography are just some mediums you’ll spot at Graham Contemporary’s new space.

The gallery follows in the footsteps of South Africa’s continuous movement towards diversification. In a country full of different traditions, cultures and religions, it is integral that the gallery represents a bit of everything.

In fact, Graham Contemporary is an ode to Jerry Saltz, who said: “Abstraction is staggeringly radical, circumvents language and sidesteps naming or mere description. It disenchants, re-enchants, detoxifies, destabilises, resists closure, slows perception and increases our grasp of the world.” Ultimately, figuration and abstractionrather than cliché ideologies that eventually expire - are emphasised at Graham Contemporary.

The modernised art gallery represents living contemporary artists in the African diaspora. With over 40 local artists contributing to the gallery’s ongoing exhibitions, it is a continuously changing environment of imagination and innovation. H

ALMA

#HelloJoburg by Renate Engelbrecht

FIRING UP THE CITY OF GOLD

The latest addition to the Origami Hospitality Group is Alma, the Latin word for soul. And has this eatery got soul! Adding to the vibe of The Woods Shopping Centre on Jan Smuts Avenue, the sister restaurant to Besos and Gaucho invites meat lovers and friends to get together, break some flat bread and share some plates.

As we sat down at one of their smaller tables outside, the Joburg buzz of an early Friday afternoon hit us. Now forming part of the unique hype of the city, Alma’s offering is the perfect fit for those looking for an elegant, yet satisfying lunch, or an unpretentious, yet decadent dinner. Their portions are generous and their dishes are perfectly plated, making it the ideal spot for first impressions –whether it’s a business lunch or a dinner date.

Starting off with a fresh oven baked flat bread and miso butter, we instantly understood what Forbes writer, Daphne Ewing-Chow meant when the first words of the title to her article on Caribbean cuisine were: “Intuition is the main ingredient.” Chef Tyler Clayton understands that too, letting his intuition lead the way when it comes to the menu which offers patrons an array of tantalising options.

Mocktails made the rounds, with an Elder Rose Mocktail landing on our table. Expertly prepared by their brand-new barman, it was less sweet than anticipated – a welcoming introduction to the weekend ahead.

With a flame-inspired menu, the meals are mainly cooked over fire. For instance, their aubergine comes straight out of the wood-fired pizza oven, while the chicken wing skewers are cooked on their Hibachi grill. The baked aubergine starter comes plated on a bed of humus, drizzled with a garlic-

chili crunch and is one of the dishes we’ll return for. It got us into the Caribbean spirit instantly, boasting flavours with soul.

Throughout the meal, there were small culinary touches that attested to the intricate planning that goes into each dish. Details like chargrilled lemon with the grilled calamari and the use of exceptionally thin onion rings made for an aesthetically pleasing and enjoyable experience. The calamari dish was served with an interesting flavour combination, paired with uniquely prepared spring onions and Salsa Verde. A deliciously fresh coriander yoghurt balanced out the spiciness of the chicken wing skewers and the smoked tuna – beautifully plated on an elevated plate – was subtle in taste, with contrasting strips of seaweed as garnish.

Finally, the main course – a generous portion of ribeye, cooked to perfection – came with a delicate mushroom truffle sauce that we hope gets served in heaven too. Paired with a humble bucket of fries, this dish will make any true South African feel right at home.

Alma’s found a way to blend the Caribbean’s flavours with South African flair. It’s an eatery we highly recommend you add to your foodie bucket list, for sure.

P.S. Try to find a table in Vincent's section. Apart from being a stellar table attendant, he also does the brand proud as food ambassador and with his attention to detail, he will guide you through the menu in spectacular fashion. H

YATAI RAMENBAR

Cape Town’s new portal to elevated Japanese street food

Just below the Nikkei Japanese Peruvian Restaurant, a portal beckons. Stepping through, Cape Town’s vibrant dining capital of Bree Street is left behind and what you find instead, is a seemingly different, yet equally exciting street-like food destination: Yatai Ramenbar.

Inspired by the Japanese street food culture, the city's newest and hippest dining spot’s interiors evoke the feeling of an open-air market. Together with soft lighting and rooflike features over the bar and open kitchen, the dark ceiling whisks you away to a pleasant summer evening somewhere far east of the Mother City. Faux cherry blossoms, illuminated in an electric pink glow, light your path into the otherwise minimalist space, with not much other décor apart from dark wood panelling.

Diners can choose to sit at the bar (where cocktails flow as freely as conversation), in front of the open kitchen that buzzes with activity, or they can find a spot at a simple table with plush modern seating. Either way, you can’t escape the vibrant energy and electric ambience of the restaurant. Pumping music sets the tone, hinting at the 22:00 transformation from a restaurant to something of a nightclub.

Inspired by the growing popularity of ramen worldwide, Yatai Ramenbar brings together renowned chefs Rikku O'Donnchu and Warwick King, previously of Ex Gate and Exhibit A. As evident in the décor, the PAN Collection Hospitality Group behind the restaurant drew inspiration from traditional Japanese food stalls or street vendors known as Yatais. Together with the chefs, they used this influence to craft their own sophisticated twist on the classic Japanese dish of ramen, elevating it to the status of fine dining. The result is a meticulously curated menu that highlights the finest ingredients, exceptional technique and a deep respect for Japanese street food culture.

A CULINARY EXPERIENCE

The launch evening of this exciting new eatery kicked off with a playful Miso Soup Bomb with Chawanmushi (a type of savoury egg custard), garnished with edible flowers. This light, flavour-packed amuse-bouche was merely a teaser to the taste buds and we could not wait to see what was next. Eventually, a delicate dance of flavours followed in the form of Red Roman Sashimi, beautifully plated with Pickled Guava, Asam Dashi and a drizzle of Mizuna Oil.

The Gyoza Dumplings, filled with succulent confit duck leg and infused with the sweet and spicy notes of sticky miso, honey and ginger, tantalised the tastebuds even further. Then, from the Robata grill came the Chicken Tsukune - succulent meatballs glazed in sweet soy, accompanied by tare sauce and fresh spring onion, dipped in confit egg yolk. An exciting explosion of smoky-sweet flavour.

All of this set the stage for the ramen to steal the show, of course. We were presented with a Truffle Shoyu Wagyu Ramen. The rich, velvety broth was infused with the earthy aroma of truffle, enveloping tender slices of Wagyu beef, crisp red cabbage slaw, scallion oil and perfectly marinated egg.

At Yatai they focus on kotteri-style broth, which is richer and creamier than other varieties. This paired beautifully with the noodles which had been traditionally stretched using an authentic Japanese noodle stretcher, adding to the artisanal quality of the experience and the chefs' dedication

to authenticity. Every bite was a delightful combination of flavour, texture and technique.

The Matcha Tiramisu with a tonka bean sponge, sweet mascarpone and matcha ice cream was an innovative take on the Italian classic. It was a fitting finale for a meal that masterfully blended tradition and innovation.

COCKTAIL CREATIONS AND NOMIKAI

Yatai’s beverage menu features a selection of Japanese-inspired cocktails, sake and Japanese whisky that is as inspired and artfully presented as the food. The Nigai Awe, a non-alcoholic mix of matcha, lime and grapefruit soda, was a refreshing alternative.

As the clock strikes 22:00, the atmosphere at Yatai transforms. From this time up until midnight, Thursday to Saturday, Yatai takes inspiration from the Japanese tradition of Nomikai, creating a ‘drinking gathering’ or late-night happy hour where friends can come together to relax, unwind and connect over drinks. Here, they offer 50% discount on selected Japanese cocktails and sake carafes as well as a soundtrack provided by a live DJ.

AN INTERNATIONAL CULINARY ADVENTURE

Yatai is a sensory journey that lingers long after you’ve left. From the theatrical presentation of the Miso Soup Bomb to the last bite of the exquisite Matcha Tiramisu, this eatery attests to the power of culinary artistry.

Whether you’re a ramen aficionado or simply looking for an exciting new dining destination, Yatai Ramenbar offers a unique taste of Japan, right in the heart of the Mother City. H

Finally, fall head over heels for their trio of desserts for the third course. If that doesn’t work, Cupid might just shoot you with his bow and arrow from atop the springbok he’s riding on the estate’s signature wine label. If Lievland Café isn’t quite your cup of tea, the café’s sister restaurant, the Postcard Café, serves a different menu of treats by the same talented Head Chef, Gareth Goliath, with equally breathtaking views. Either way, there are plenty of reasons to brunch in Stellies.

THE WES BISTRO & BAR

A large mural of The Grand Budapest Hotel (a fictional hotel from the iconic film) forms the backdrop for a charmingly quirky dining experience at The Wes Bistro & Bar. Drawing inspiration from classic French bistros and the cuisine that they serve, Megan Kritzinger of the Stellski Coffee Bar & Café set out to bring this approach to Cape Town. Open since October 2024, The Wes Bistro & Bar’s menu celebrates the simple elegance of French cooking with a modern twist, along with a selection of carefully crafted cocktails. All of this is artfully presented in a unique homage to American film director Wes Anderson. The food was conceptualised and designed by local legend, Chef Peter GoffeWood. In addition to the Grand Budapest, other signature cocktails include Cpt. Steve Zissou's Revenge (inspired by The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou) and Mr Fox’s Sly Bourbon (inspired by Fantastic Mr. Fox). Further to this, Nicola Orpen of Bone Studio infused the décor with Wes Anderson’s signature flair. The Wes Bistro & Bar is the ultimate combination of classy and quirky and the perfect spot for a leisurely lunch, a sophisticated dinner or a cheeky cocktail.

WHY SO CERIOUS CEREAL CAFÉ & BAKERY

Cape Town’s very first cereal café has arrived and it’s serving up a heaped bowl of nostalgia with every bite. Taking its name (deliberately misspelt) from the famous Joker quote, this quirky, family-run café and bakery draws inspiration from the international success of other cereal cafés, bringing the magic to the Mother City. Their menu is a colourful tribute to childhood favourites, featuring playful creations like basic cereal bowls with your choice of milk and the indulgent Cereal Swirler which blends your favourite cereal with vanilla ice cream. Their top seller, though, is the Ice Cream Burger: A lightly toasted roll stuffed with ice cream, cereal and your choice of extra toppings. It’s a little bit sweet, a little bit nostalgic and a whole lot of fun!

SÓTANO

SÓTANO, a beloved Mouille Point restaurant, has been serving up popular Mediterranean-inspired cuisine for fourteen years. Recently though, they updated their menu to include fresh Cape seafood and tasty sushi, as well as a new range of signature cocktails. One of the new menu’s highlights is Head Chef Eugene Marinus’ Seafood Espetada, which includes king prawns, grilled octopus, Patagonian calamari and line fish, all served on a skewer and drenched in rich lemon butter. Whether you indulge in this new menu offering or something else, SÓTANO is a great place to pop into for a meal and a summer sundowner after a stroll on Cape Town’s iconic promenade. From here, you can also watch the sun set behind the Mouille Point lighthouse.

HEART SPOTTING WITH THE SECRET LOVE PROJECT

Anyone who has been in Cape Town for more than five minutes has probably noticed an abundance of heart-shaped bumper stickers. This same shape can also be spotted in various forms of public art found around the city, as well as on the occasional road sign. Instead of playing ‘Punch Buggy’ by trying to spot Volkswagen Beetles, heart spotting makes for an easier and more fun activity in Cape Town. The person who counts the most on any given journey wins. If you’re wondering about the origins of these hearts, the Secret Love Project is a charity that provides heart stickers to the homeless so they can sell them to support themselves. It was created as a project for World Design Capital 2014 where Michael Elion designed it as an urban artwork intended to subliminally and positively influence people's perceptions of the city and their behaviour. Eleven years later, Cape Town is covered in hearts. Pick up your own pack of stickers from homeless people at a number of traffic lights for just R20. Also, be sure to look out for the new Secret Love Project postcards, featuring love poetry with cryptic clues to secret spots and lesser-known gems in Cape Town.

GOLDEN HOUR

FINDING SOLACE AND COMING FULL CIRCLE THROUGH CUISINE

The golden hour is known well amongst photographers worldwide. In essence, it’s the hour just after sunrise, or the hour just before sunset, when the sky is magically lit in hues of red and gold. In medicine, it refers to the first hour after a traumatic injury, when emergency treatment is most likely to be successful. Serving as the name of an Asian-inspired restaurant that brings the Tam family’s heritage to the capital, the term is taking on yet another meaning. Pretoria’s Golden Hour Asian Grill House is where you’ll find authentic Asian cuisine with a lot of heart.

Nazirite Tam, co-owner and creator of Golden Hour says that the restaurant was the first project he and his brother took on after their father, Enoch Tam passed away. The restaurant serves as a tribute to the man who raised them and taught them everything about construction, the industry he’d worked in while also fulfilling his role as missionary.

Golden Hour - conceptualised and constructed by the Tam brothers - is quickly making name for itself with an interactive approach and palatable menu options. Bringing together flavours from Korea, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore, the menu is filled with cuisine inspired by their travels. Probably one of the most intriguing parts of the experience, is the grill tables where patrons can grill their own portions of thinly sliced meat, allowing for fun conversations

around the table. It might also be the first Asian restaurant to offer Korean barbeque dishes with game meat.

The premium Udon noodles served at the Faerie Glen eatery are imported from Japan. Served with grilled pork belly and baby corn, this makes for one of the most authentic and delicious dishes on the menu. Their Enoki Rolls - Enoki mushrooms wrapped in thin slices of meat - are also grilled at the table, offering a different take on the typical Pretorian's habitual steak with mushroom sauce.

For dessert, we indulged in Golden Hour’s Matcha Cheesecake. With its stunning cream and olive-green layers - topped with pink flowers resembling the silk cherry blossoms overhead - it was undoubtedly the most Instagrammable part of our meal.

The challenge of getting a liquor license is real, but Golden Hour offers a wide range of delicious mocktails and other alternatives to keep your thirst quenched. Considering the global rise of Asian-inspired cocktails, we are hoping to see some cocktails with yuzu, matcha and shiso on their drinks menu soon though.

Following the trauma of losing their patriarch and mentor, the eatery has become the Tam family's golden hour. As the two brothers navigate a world without their dad, they seem to have found a place where they

CAFÉ SPARROW

A HIDDEN GEM IN DURBAN’S UPPER HIGHWAY

#HelloDurban by Tessa Buhrmann Images: Supplied

Adelightful find nestled in the leafy suburb of Gillitts in Durban’s Upper Highway, Café Sparrow is conveniently located just off Old Main Road and the M13.

The charming restaurant and coffee shop recently celebrated its first anniversary and with its extensive menu and enchanting setting, it’s no wonder it’s become a favourite among locals.

At Café Sparrow, diners can choose between the cosy indoor setting, or a picturesque outdoor deck overlooking a serene natural lake - home to a variety of waterbirds. Here, an easy stroll down the steps offers an up-close encounter with nature, with Egyptian geese and curious koi adding a unique touch to the experience.

Modern, yet understated décor and a colour palette inspired by the natural beauty surrounding the venue make for a welcoming atmosphere at Café Sparrow.

The eatery is open daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner on select nights, catering to a wide audience. In fact, early risers are well accommodated, with doors opening at 06:30 - a favourite time for gym-goers grabbing a pre-workout coffee or post-workout breakfast. Of course, almond and oat milk options elevate their coffee game for the health-conscious crowd.

Breakfast highlights include the classic egg breakfast, avocado toast with cherry tomatoes, herbs and bacon, as well as more indulgent offerings like chicken livers, mince on toast, Sparrow’s take on Eggs Benedict, oats and a refreshing smoothie bowl. These are all served until 11:30.

The lunch and light meal menu is equally appealing, offering everything from mezze platters - perfect for lazy afternoons - to coffee and cake.

Then, as the sun sets, the

lakeside space transforms into a magical escape with twinkling lights reflecting off the water, accompanied by soft contemporary music and the occasional call of tree frogs. We began our evening with a G&T while perusing the dinner menu. Starters like Baked Camembert with Fig Preserve and Sourdough, and Lemon Butter Grilled Calamari were tempting, but we opted for the Hake Fish Cakes. Crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, they were perfectly complemented by Sparrow’s tangy Aioli. We also had the Spiced Lamb Meatballs, served with a zesty Tzatziki, Herb Salsa and warm Pita Bread. The flavourful dish evoked the vibrant tastes of Middle Eastern cuisine.

Sparrow Café’s main courses offer something for every palate: Steaks, pasta, pizza, chicken dishes, calamari and fish. While the thought of a delightfully cheesy pizza was enticing, we settled on the Tuscan Chicken

Breast. Served with a Creamy Sundried Tomato Sauce, Sautéed Spinach, Quinoa and a Roasted Vegetable Salad, it was both satisfying and generously portioned. The Grilled Rump Steak, cooked to medium-rare perfection and coupled with fries and a side salad, was expertly paired with a glass of Ken Forrester Petit Merlot.

Dessert also didn’t disappoint. While the delectable Carrot Cake is a crowd favourite, the Caramel Fudge Ice Cream stole the show for us.

Owner, Candice Davies says the eatery’s name represents the early mornings required to cater to the breakfast crowd and getting up with the sparrows. Sparrows also symbolise joy, creativity and companionship – a sentiment that rings true, as Café Sparrow is the perfect spot for gatherings with friends or family, quiet business meetings or romantic dinners. During our visit, the scones - served with cream and jam - were hot out the oven and the mature cheddar rarebit - served on sourdough and topped with a butternut pickle - is delicious. Of course, an expertly prepared cappuccino completed the experience. For a relaxed afternoon, share a bespoke charcuterie board featuring house-made selections, perfect for an al fresco treat. Whether you’re fuelling up for an adventure or winding down post-ride, Mahā Café’s blend of artisanal charm and culinary excellence makes it a mustvisit in Durban’s food scene.

CELEBRATING 30 YEARS OF MABULA GAME LODGE

A JOURNEY THROUGH WILDERNESS AND RENEWAL

Nestled in the rolling hills of the Waterberg, just a mere two and a half hours’ drive from Joburg, Mabula Game Lodge stands as a sanctuary where the whispers of the African bush mingle with luxurious modernity. For three decades, this private reserve in Limpopo has offered guests an intimate connection with nature and its recent 30th birthday celebration marked an exciting new chapter for this timeless destination.

A REVITALISED SAFARI HAVEN

Mabula Game Lodge has undergone an extraordinary transformation, enhancing its signature blend of luxury and wilderness. The refurbished Boma and terrace now provide the ultimate setting for starlit dinners under the African sky, while the new Lounge Bar, with its warm textures and elegant design, invites moments of relaxation and reflection. Every detail reflects a commitment to harmonising modern comforts with the surrounding natural beauty.

The lodge’s redesigned accommodation echoes this balance. Each suite is a serene retreat, with African-inspired décor and panoramic views of the bushveld. These thoughtfully curated spaces ensure a deep

connection to the wilderness from sunrise to starlight for both solo travellers and those sharing the adventure with loved ones.

ADVENTURES THAT LEAVE A MARK

Mabula Game Lodge is renowned for its thrilling safaris and during this celebratory visit, we experienced something truly extraordinary. After the lodge’s resident veterinarians darted a rhino and an elephant from a helicopter, we got to participate in their process of taking measurements, collecting blood samples and installing new tracking devices on these majestic animals. It was a once-ina-lifetime opportunity that underscored Mabula’s dedication to conservation.

Guests can also embark on twice-daily game drives led by expert guides who delve into the heart of the reserve, introducing the Big Five and the diverse flora and fauna of the area. Between safaris, indulgent meals are served - from high tea with freshly baked treats, to dinners that capture the essence of African cuisine.

BRINGING THE BUSH HOME

Beyond the reserve, Mabula partners with Africam and Wild Earth to extend its magic. Guests can tune into a live feed from

the iconic Gnu Pan or enjoy virtual safaris guided by the reserve’s experts. These immersive experiences bring the thrill of the African bush to screens around the world, offering an unforgettable connection to wildlife for those near and far.

A LEGACY OF HOSPITALITY AND CONSERVATION

Over the past 30 years, Mabula Game Lodge has evolved into more than just a destination. It’s a celebration of Africa’s natural beauty and a testament to sustainable tourism. As the lodge continues its journey, its commitment to hospitality, conservation and unforgettable experiences ensures that it will remain a cherished retreat for generations to come.

THE PERFECT COMPANION FOR SLOW TRAVELLING FAMILIES

WHEN THE JOURNEY IS AS MUCH PART OF YOUR FAMILY’S EXPERIENCE AS THE DESTINATION ITSELF, THE IDEAL VEHICLE TO GET YOU THERE IS THE ISUZU mu-X

As we stood watching three giraffes nearing the waterhole, waiting for them to slowly bend down in their unusual way to quench their thirst, a snake sneakily slipped past us mere metres away. Its proximity nudged us into the sweet realisation that finally, we were in the bush, submerged in nature where life seemed to move at a slower pace.

In recent years, we came to find that the lessons you learn from travelling with kids are endless. For us, one of those lessons was to embrace slow travel, even before it became a thing. While

the term has now been identified as one of the travel trends of our time, it’s something we’ve adopted a long time ago. Considering the benefits, we don’t plan on changing anything about it any time soon.

Slow travel or slow tourism can be described as a way of travelling that reduces mobility and taking time to explore local history and culture while also supporting the environment. In fact, according to the Journal of Travel Research, a slow traveller’s goals mainly consist of relaxation, self-reflection, escape, novelty seeking, engagement and discovery. Our

recent stay at Safari Plains, as well as the journey there and back, ticked all of these boxes.

THE JOURNEY, ELEVATED BY THE ISUZU mu-X

The ISUZU mu-X played a huge part in making our journey a memorable one. Driving to Mabula Game Reserve from Pretoria with two kids in tow was surprisingly pleasant, with them having ample space at the back. Between drawing, playing ‘I see with my little eyes,’ taking a nap and snacking, the two-hour journey almost went by too fast! Luckily, we could also stop at a local ‘padstal’ en route,

#HelloLifestyle by Renate Engelbrecht Images: Ryan Enslin - My Lime Boots; Renate Engelbrecht

exploring some of the local foodie favourites and souvenirs for sale.

They say slow travel encourages more leisurely modes of transport and, considering its comfort and user-friendly cruise control, travelling to Safari Plains with the ISUZU mu-X undoubtedly ensured an effortless, leisurely drive.

MAKING THE MOST OF SLOW TRAVEL AT SAFARI PLAINS

We are convinced that South Africa is one of the best countries to tap into slow living, especially if you’re clever about it. Apart from choosing the right vehicle for your journey and making time to stop at local shops and stalls, opting for the right destination that will cater to your travel needs is vital.

Many might argue that safari lodges have all become one and the same and that the offering is often typical madefor-tourist experiences instead of the authentic connections and interactions the slow travel movement is after. Still, Safari

as possible and learning more about the area’s fauna and flora, as well as its people. As with many safari experiences, we were also offered a bonfire dinner in the bush with a performance by some of the local staff. This performance stood out, though, as they explained the tradition of drumming and invited guests to participate – giving us a glimpse of their culture in combination with a feast of local cuisine.

The golden thread of slow travel also ran through to the beautiful, canvased units we got to call home for two nights. Consisting of a main bedroom and a second twin room, a spacious bathroom, a small lounge area and a deck, it offered the perfect escape from the public lounge, bar and pool area. Here, we could sit on the deck and listen to the birds. At night, a jackal came past, leaving footprints for us to discover the next morning. We were submerged in nature, but not vulnerable, and we loved it. Of course, the guided game

Plains’ human-to-human interactions, unique cuisine offerings (often in the middle of the bush) and the insights into nature had us in awe.

We made the most of our two-day stay at Safari Plains, spending as much time together as a family

effort to leave lasting impressions through emotional connections.

A SWEET RETURN

While we’ve had our fair share of travel blues following adventures we’d never forget, this time was different. Safari Plains’ people had become family in a matter of two days and somehow, we knew that we’d return. In addition, we still had the journey back home to look forward to.

Steady on its wheels, the ISUZU mu-X effortlessly drove us home as we reminisced about spotting zebra stripes in the tall savanna, lazy lions and bulky buffalos. The 7-seater SUV was perfect for getting there and back, offering exceptional driving on Mabula’s dirt roads and smoothly transitioning to the urban roads of Pretoria.

At the intersection of travel and tech, we found a sweet spot to secure a sweet return. With the ISUZU mu-X’s 9’’ touchscreen with RDS, MP3, Bluetooth, Audio Streaming, six speakers, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto,

drives and the anticipation of spotting the Big 5 added to the experience even further. At Safari Plains, nothing is necessarily as it seems. From surprise afternoon high teas under thorn trees to morning coffee and waffles in the bush, the hospitality team truly made an

SPECS

THAT SPEAKS

TO TRAVEL -LING FAMILIES

Of course, safety is a biggy when it comes to family road trips and here, the ISUZU mu-X also delivers. It comes with seven airbags, a rear-view camera, front and rear parking distance sensors, trailer sway control, hill-descent control, hill-start assist, electronic stability control, cruise control, side-impact bars (front and rear), brake override accelerator, a brake assist system, electronic brakeforce distribution, an anti-lock braking system and a remote key auto re-lock.

The entry level ISUZU mu-X 4X2 (1.9 LS) is available from R744 300, with its big brother – a 3.0 LS 4X4 – going for R931 600.

Wi-Fi and a Multi-Information Display, we were set with a backtrack and many stories to share.

One thing is certain: The ISUZU mu-X will get you to a place where you can take life at a slower pace, smoothly. H

HERITAGE AND HEART within the Home

#HelloLifestyle

When it comes to fitting out your house, redecorating your favourite spaces or planning your dream home, South Africa has loads of décor stores to discover. Two of them have recently been on our radar, not only because of its stunning products, but also the heart and heritage within each piece.

INCANDA, BROOKLYN SQUARE, PRETORIA

With its recent opening in Brooklyn Square, Pretoria, Incanda Furniture threw open its doors to the citizens of the city, inviting them to come and see its quality craftsmanship for themselves. Its distinctly South African aesthetic is an extension of its already impressive online store, bringing its offering closer to customers who enjoy experiencing the products firsthand.

Featuring pieces that reflect the rich heritage and natural beauty of South Africa, Incanda’s new location is a prime location for décor lovers to discover unique pieces that will make their houses home.

Each of Incanda’s items are skillfully crafted using natural, locally sourced materials. This includes fine leather and premium wood, which results in furniture

and decorative items with durability and a unique, timeless appeal.

Those wanting to elevate a specific space within their homes will find solace in the supreme comfort and welcoming atmosphere that the South African style of this store brings about.

What started out as a father’s heartfelt passion has now grown into an outdoor furniture brand that enriches the community by celebrating local artisanship. While Alifurn’s showroom is based in Woodstock, Cape Town, its factory – or rather, its heart – is based in Ballito.

Their latest collection – a tribute to South African ingenuity, quality and sustainable craftsmanship – speaks to how Alifurn is dedicated to crafting furniture that seamlessly combines elegance with sustainability.

The Cara Range is all about modern, modular minimalism, reflecting the essence of summer through elegant design and timeless, yet versatile comfort. What we love

Their Crystal Pool Lounger makes a statement on its own with sleek, lowmaintenance aluminium frames. Put two of these stylish loungers next to each other and you have the perfect daybed for a serene summer retreat.

Finally, the Tara Range has us smitten. Crafted with an aluminium frame with a chic, powder-coated finish, this range bridges the gap between indoors and outdoors seamlessly, keeping things stylish even as you move the party outside.

MALTA

A STRATEGIC HUB FOR TAX BENEFITS AND SEAMLESS EU MARKET ACCESS

Apart from its idyllic location in the Mediterranean Sea - between Sicily and North America - Malta is becoming increasingly popular due to the financial benefits it boasts.

There are numerous factors that have played a part in the rising trend of South Africans exploring residency, citizenship and business expansion options in Malta. These include South Africa’s volatile economic and political climate, the desire for a secure future and the fact that Malta is one of the safest countries in the world.

Dr. James Muscat Azzopardi, Director at Credence - a leading corporate advisory firm based in Malta - says he believes that the archipelago is the next best strategic hub when it comes to tax advantages and seamless EU market access for South Africans.

Malta’s tax system can deliver substantial savings to expats, especially for those with foreign investments or retirees who draw pension income. Apart from its Global Residence Programme (which allows the applicant and his or her family to live in Malta permanently and provides visafree travel across the EU for 90 days in

each 180-day period) a very favourable flat tax rate of 15% on foreign income remitted to Malta applies. This provides a tax-efficient structure for international earnings. Also, extensive treaties ensure that income earned abroad is not taxed twice, which enhances financial efficiency, and South Africans aren’t required to relinquish their citizenship or property holdings, making it simple to retain connections to home. “For South African business owners, relocating to Malta brings with it extensive tax benefits,” Dr. Muscat Azzopardi says. That includes “exemptions from capital gains, wealth and inheritance tax.”

With the island country forming part of the European Union, South Africans acquiring Maltese citizenship through investment can live, work and study in any of the 27 EU member States without any restriction. It also offers the sixth most powerful passport globally with visa-free access to over 170 countries, including the United States and Canada. Further to this, “Malta provides a strong framework for expatriates looking to optimise their tax position while retaining South African citizenship,” Dr. Muscat Azzopardi says.

Of course, Malta’s EU affiliation also aids in providing South African entrepreneurs direct access to one of the world’s largest markets. This ultimately simplifies crossborder operations, allowing a stable business environment. Dr. Muscat Azzopardi says: “Malta presents a unique opportunity for South African businesses to access the European market without necessarily uprooting their operations completely from home.” He also says that “in recent years, a significant number of South Africans have moved their companies from Mauritius to Malta due to a Mauritius presence raising red flags with European and American banks and counterparties.”

Finance, technology and real estate sectors in Malta have seen significant growth and Credence has seen a rise in inquiries from companies keen on leveraging Malta’s business-friendly regulations and extensive network of trade agreements. It might have become known for its enviable lifestyle, excellent infrastructure and secure environment, but it is clear that Malta is also a popular destination for those seeking a favourable tax environment.
