always say that I’m a winter person. I love cuddling and indulging in a glass of red wine next to the fireplace. Yet, this winter might have changed my mind. I don’t know about you, but in a personal capacity, this winter was hard. Among other things, we moved house, mom guilt got a grip over me, work was busy, budgets were tight…
Then yesterday came and at the break of dawn, I consciously walked out into the crisp morning air to feel its sting on my cheeks. As I held my cup of coffee, I listened to the birds, frantically flapping their wings and eagerly chirping as if to say: “Hurry up! The sun’s up! There’s a new day dawning!” And I knew, in that moment, that yes, a new day was dawning for all of us - whether physically or emotionally - and we had to grab it with both hands. Seize the day.
That is what so many of the talented chefs, mixologists, brand moguls and entrepreneurs featured in this issue have been doing and continue to do. That includes confident women (and men) who refuse to back down, who get back up, who continue to build, who aim to inspire. From Christel van den Bergh who so elegantly and confidently graces our cover this August and September, to GweGwe Beach Lodge’s team whose hearts are filled with the dream of conserving the Wild Coast and uplifting its people, this issue is filled with individuals who value heritage, while striving to encourage, inspire and make a change.
I hope our Spring Edition brings a hint of encouragement and a sprinkle of inspiration to you as we head into a new season. With its layers of feminine confidence, hues of heritage and glimpses of hope, I trust it will nudge you in the direction of seizing the day in your own way.

Christel VAN DEN BERGH
LIVING BEYOND ‘WHAT IF’
The odds were against us as we navigated between a suitable time to shoot, transport from the Free State, finding the perfect outfit and getting her hair and makeup done. But, as she rightly states: “Women have a quiet strength.” Apart from being deadline savvy, Christel van den Bergh is also quite adept when it comes to first impressions. As she glided into Time Square’s Forti Grill & Bar with her admirable confidence, we just knew that this woman was the perfect fit for our Spring Edition. She radiated a gentle self-confidence – the kind that includes rather than intimidates.
BACK IN THE JACARANDA CITY, FOR A DAY
Pretoria is where Christel van den Bergh’s career kicked off. She was still studying drama at the Pretoria Technicon when the secretary, Cathy Steynfaardt suggested Christel to the late and incomparable Gerrit Schoonhoven for a role in Chris Vorster’s Plek van die Vleisvreters. Schoonhoven was scouting universities, looking for a 20-year-old with acting skills who could play the role of Ansie, a lost teenager addicted to drugs. “I started shooting while I finished off my studies.”
Christel had always wanted to become an actress. “Or a vet, or a game ranger,” she adds. “My strong love for animals then steered me away from having to do some of the horrible jobs vets don’t talk about. I also realised that I’d rather just own a game farm (still a pipedream) instead of being a ranger.” So, she decided to study drama instead.
WILD AND FREE, KEEPING BUSY
Being a keen runner who has completed the Comrades Marathon, the farm is where Christel can run wild and free. “It’s how I keep fit. I also run to be able to eat more. I love eating. And wine! When I run, I run at least 6km, but preferably 10km.” She says the Comrades Marathon was a bucket list item for her. “It was such an incredible experience; I definitely want to do it again. It is really not that hard to get to the Comrades, but on the day you feel all the feels. It was most definitely one of the toughest and most fun things I have ever done!”
The acting scene can sometimes be a volatile and unstable industry to be in, which is why Christel has her fingers in more than one pie. “As an actor, you need to always have other streams of income,” she says.
She is a qualified Pilates instructor and has been teaching Pilates part-time since 2007. She also co-owns an online acting school, Close Up Acting, with her friend, Zetske van Pletzen. “It is industry-orientated and a part-time 12-month course for those who are interested in this world of ours, but not quite sure whether they want to pursue acting as a career, or if you just want to sharpen up your skills and knowledge,” she adds. In addition to this, she is also a voice artist, director and writer. “I have written numerous children’s productions, two films which are available on Showmax, and I do copywriting for radio commercials. I also create digital products and build websites – something I started doing recently to have an income while I am on the farm with my kids.”
GROWING UP AMONG STRONG WOMEN (AND MEN)
Christel describes herself as an extrovert who gets her energy from being around ‘lekker’ people. “I am happy, assertive, driven and empathetic. I am straightforward. (Not a lot of people like that, but what you see is what you get). I hate injustice and always stand up for what I believe is right. Got that from my dad.”
#HelloLifestyle by Renate Engelbrecht Images: Hanneri de Wet Photography Wardrobe: Masch; Milk & Honey Hair & Makeup: Makeup by Annelize Venue: Forti Bar & Grill, Time Square
She was raised to be all these things and more, with various strong women playing a significant role in who she is today. “My mom is so strong,” she says. “She survived colon cancer when I was in Matric and taught me so much about what it is to truly believe in God and to have peace.” She adds that her grandmother, who stayed with them, was just as incredible. “Somehow, I have always been surrounded by strong women. I feel very lucky because of that.” For her, a strong woman is confident, optimistic, kind, loving, proud, supportive and stands up for what she believes in. She can be both independent and dependent, while staying true to herself.
In addition, Christel has a handful of female friends whom she turns to for advice. “Most of them I have known for more than twenty years and are in the creative industry. We are likeminded and honest with each other; supportive and not judgmental.” Apart from her and David’s moms who are great soundboards, she truly looks up to fellow thespian, Jocelyn Broderick and businesswoman, Lizette Volkwyn – both good friends.
She also has incredible men in her life whose opinions and advice she seeks. Especially in the industry, with mentors like Hannes Muller, Christo Davids and Chris Vorster deserving a mention. “And, one of the most talented individuals with a lot of wisdom: My fiancé, David. He takes everything into consideration before making big decisions.” And then, of course, her dad. “He’s just the best human alive!”
UPS AND DOWNS BRING INNER STRENGTH
Reflecting on Women’s Month, Christel says she has never thought of her struggles or challenges as something more challenging or difficult than anyone else’s just because she’s a woman or a mother. “Whether you’re a woman or a man; rich or poor; white or black, I believe people have different struggles and my parents raised me to never be a victim of my circumstances. No matter what those circumstances might be. So, I never dwell on whether certain demographics have it easier than others. You are dealt your hand. Life isn’t fair and I hate unfairness. But, certain things you must just accept… Life is hard. Work hard. Be kind and ‘lekker.’ You have to live with you. It’s a mind shift and it takes work and lots of self-talk, but it is so much easier and makes life so much more fun if you just adapt to that mindset.”
Christel herself has experienced the ebb and flow of life on numerous occasions.
Whether you’re a woman or a man; rich or poor; white or black, I believe people have different struggles and my parents raised me to never be a victim of my circumstances. No matter what those circumstances might be.
She has lost a lot of friends and family who have passed away over the years, including a close cousin who passed away on the day she gave birth to her second son. “I have also lost friends who are still alive,” she adds. “That is hurtful. When someone you love is not part of your book, but just one chapter.” Even in her career, she has had to go through extremely hurtful events, but she admits that even those were important happenings, as it taught her some of the biggest life lessons.
‘IF
ONLY’ NO MORE
The actress has come to learn that certain things you just can’t change. As hard and unbearable as it might be. “It’s just the way it is. That is why it is so important to not sweat the small stuff and to truly live in the moment. To wake up with a grateful heart regardless of your situation. There is always something to be grateful for. Things can always be better, and things can always be worse. The good and hurtful things that happen to us, shape us and we must learn from each and every one of them.” She says that living with an ‘if only’ or ‘I wish’ attitude will only prolong the acceptance process and the pain. “It’s important to sit in the pain, feel it, accept it, work through it and learn to live with it so you can live! Life is so short. And, life is so beautiful if you look closely. Focus on the beauty and don’t take anything for granted.” Christel says her kids are the best thing that has ever happened to her. They taught her
to live in the moment and to appreciate the small things. She’s all about being self-aware and doing introspection often. In fact, she says that knowing exactly who you are and what you stand for and believe in are two of the main things that contribute to self-confidence. That, and “feeling good, so exercise and surround yourself with supportive people who believe in you,” she adds. She also says that she believes to be kind is the best thing anyone can be. “If you’re honest about your shortcomings and what you bring to the table, you have a pretty good idea of who you are and you can be confident by liking the person you are.”
FLY!
Christel van den Bergh actively embraces life and the beauty in it. Her ambition drives her to try new things and while she is realistic, she also dreams big. That’s also why Erin Hanson’s words ring so true in her life: “But what if I fall?” “Oh, but my darling, what if you fly?”
There are many plans in the pipeline for the actress turned farmgirl, including a cookbook with some of her favourite things to eat, making cheese and writing a series with David. “We’d love to produce it, direct it and act in it,” says Christel about the series. “It’s about farm life and the community. Good, wholesome family content.” They hope to have the series ready in about a year’s time.
Further to this, Christel dreams about producing her own television shows, becoming self-sufficient on the farm and leaving a legacy behind for their children. She would also love to travel with David and the kids and show their children different cultures and countries around the world.
BE WILD, BUT STAY SOFT
As a city girl now living on a Free State farm, Christel says farm life can be hectic. “You have to toughen up, but stay soft.” Her motto is to never let life harden your heart. “Be a yes man and be adventurous. Try to find the kid in you – fearless and strong, but kind and vulnerable. I believe having a kind heart is the ultimate strength. H
Christel can be seen in the 50-minute-long action comedy, Die Geval van Gideon Gertse, directed by Christo Davids, on Showmax this September.

OR IS IT BEAUTY BY CONFIDENCE?
QUICK CONFIDENCE WITH ESSIE’S GEL COUTURE
Your hands are hands down under the top five items that can quickly dim your confidence. Especially when your nails aren’t in good shape. But, not everyone has the time (or the budget, for that matter) to pop into the nail salon every fortnight. The alternative is to go with the best nail polish that would still give you the gel-like finish and last relatively long. Essie’s Gel Couture 345 Bubbles Only must be one of our favourites. Not only because of its colour and its boldness, but also because there is no need for a UV light, even though it still offers that gel-like shine. Depending on how active you are on the gardening an dishwashing front, it is said to give up to fourteen days of luxurious wear. You’ll find it on takealot.com.

Many people believe that being attractive or beautiful will boost their confidence. We say, confidence makes you beautiful. But, there’s nothing wrong with a bold red lip or a silky soft skin to elevate your self-esteem and your confidence, which is why we’ve gathered some of our favourite beauty products worth recommending for that extra bit of poise:
THE SCENT OF SUCCESS
M·A·CXIMAL SILKY MATTE LIPSTICK
Who does not feel more confident with a bright red lip? New and improved, M·A·C Cosmetics’ M·A·CXIMAL Silky Matte Lipstick is bound to boost your confidence threefold. It offers full coverage with a pigment-rich colour that boasts a silky matte finish and it should give you twelve hours of comfortable wear. It’s all about ‘more’ with this lipstick. More comfort, more care, more long wear, more luxe, more responsible and of course, more confidence. The creamy blend of coconut oil, organic shea butter and organic cocoa butter nourishes the lips, while also offering eight hours of moisture. The long-lasting colour will also leave your lips looking fuller from the very first application. The red range features confident names too: Diva, D for Danger, Ruby Woo, Red Rock and Sin.

Finally, if you’re in doubt, let your scent speak for you. Since it’s spring, there are various floral-inspired perfumes that will add a wow factor to your entrance. Issey Miyake’s L’Eau d’Issey Solar Violet (available at Dis-Chem) is a vegan Eau de Toilette with 90% natural origin ingredients. It’s true to the words of Issey Miyake: “Nature is the best perfumer.” Gucci Bloom Eau de Parfum, available on Bash, is another burst of floral confidence, as is Marc Jacobs’ Daisy Ever So Fresh Eau de Parfum, which you can also find at Dis-Chem.
LELIVE
Founded by South African actress, model and Greenpeace ambassador, Amanda du-Pont, the lelive brand has seen impressive growth year-on-year since its inception. The name of the skincare range was taken from Amanda’s Swati name, Langalelive, meaning ‘light of the world’ and lelive has recently gone global, having officially been launched in London in June. lelive heroes African ingredients and it’s dedicated to serving diverse skin types. “lelive taps into the shift of getting back to basics,” du-Pont says. “Simple and effective living, where nature source is enough, and towards the solutions our ancestors used that were clean and free from unnecessary harmful additives and fragrances.” She adds that in African communities, a lot of aloe and shea butter get used – “ingredients native to us, but always exported for global brands to use. We’ve decided to make our products from our natural resources, which are sustainable and that stand tall on the international stage.” Now, if that’s not confidence – in herself, in South Africa’s botanicals and in her brand – we don’t know what is!

FARMHOUSE58
Exploring serenity through art and nature
Nestled in the heart of the Cradle of Humankind, Farmhouse58 is a sanctuary where wellness, nature and serenity harmoniously converge. From the moment one arrives, it's evident that every aspect of this guest farm is meticulously designed to cultivate peace and tranquility, inviting guests to reconnect with themselves and nature.
The rooms and main areas of Farmhouse58 are imbued with the Japanese aesthetic concept of Wabi Sabi - a worldview centred on embracing transience and imperfection. This design philosophy manifests in spaces that feel both timeless and fleeting at the same time, encouraging a sense of mindfulness and acceptance in all who visit.
Art plays a significant role at Farmhouse58, thanks in part to its proximity to the Nirox Sculpture Park. Integrating with this artistic haven means that the farm is adorned with thought-provoking sculptures and artworks that breathe life into every corner, fostering an atmosphere of wonder and introspection.
Scattered across the property are numerous quiet spaces where guests can unwind and lose themselves in the beauty of nature. Among these, a small reading nook in the attic of the main reception area stands out. This cosy spot, with its tiny window peeking out onto the serene landscape, quickly
became a favourite, offering a perfect retreat for contemplation and relaxation.
Our visit to Farmhouse58 was driven by a desire to experience their new wellness offerings. The day commenced with an invigorating 10km trail run led by Tom, the resident landscaper and Comrades Marathon athlete. The run, which circumnavigated the property and featured several challenging hill climbs, was a rewarding experience, especially for mid-level athletes seeking a manageable, yet stimulating workout.
Following the run, we indulged in a sauna session overlooking the natural gardens and indigenous forest. This detoxifying experience, known for its benefits in improving metabolism, sleep and stress reduction, was a much-needed respite from the rushed city life. The sauna was followed by a transformative yoga session and breathwork class, which left us feeling at peace and deeply connected to the serene countryside. Finally, the day culminated in a 90-minute deep tissue massage that completely alleviated any lingering tension.
Dining at Farmhouse58 is a delightful journey in itself. The food is sourced from their regenerative gardens and local artisanal suppliers who share the same commitment to sustainability and quality. Each meal is a balanced combination of hearty, farm-style
dishes tailored to suit a variety of tastes. A standout favourite was the chicken curry, served with an array of flavourful accompaniments - an utterly blissful experience for the palate.
Farmhouse58’s wellness offerings extend beyond physical treatments. Holistic practices such as Reiki (which channels universal life force energy) and Ayurveda (a system that harmonises mind, body and spirit) are integral parts of their program. In addition, the serene environment of Farmhouse58 provides an ideal setting for embracing these ancient wisdoms.
Another unique highlight from our visit to Farmhouse58 was their Slow Contemplative Walk, with Lesego as our guide. This easy, 90-minute guided hike around the property encouraged mindfulness and present-moment awareness, allowing us to find tranquility in the simplicity of walking and observing nature.
One thing is certain: Farmhouse58 is much more than just a guest farm. It’s a haven for those seeking a retreat and solitude away from the chaos of daily life. With its emphasis on wellness, nature and art, it offers a profound and enriching experience. We can’t wait to return for another weekend of rest and revitalisation. H

CONRAD'S TOP THREE TRAINING HACKS
Training for a triathlon can be daunting. Conrad Stoltz shares his top three tips to help you prepare:
1. Consistency is key. Stay consistent with your training. Even a little bit every day is much better than stopping for months and trying to get back into it. Start as soon as possible.
2. Keep intensity low. Focus on endurance by training at a level where you can carry a conversation. Aim for 60% to 80% of your max heart rate to achieve optimal performance.
3. Skills practice. Master the technical aspects of triathlon and race day transitions. Conrad emphasises the importance of mountain biking skills, calling it 'free speed.' Once you learn the skills, they stay with you forever. Consider hiring a skills coach or riding with a skilled mountain biker to improve.
Africa. His passion extends beyond his own achievements, though. He is also dedicated to training youth and uplifting the sport. Whether he’s designing challenging, yet achievable courses or mentoring the next generation, Conrad’s heart of gold and humble nature make him a true ambassador of the sport.
A TRIATHLON FOR EVERYONE
Xterra is truly an event for everyone, from novice to expert and everyone in between. The triathlon offers three race levels: The Full Distance (featuring a 1.5km swim, a 25km bike ride through mountain trails and a 9km trail run); the Sprint (which includes a 500m swim, a 12km bike ride and a 5km trail run); and the Super Sprint (perfect for kids over 10 with a 300m swim, a 7km bike ride and a 2km trail run). Whether you’re an experienced triathlete or just looking for a new challenge, there’s a race for you. Also, it's not just about the competition; it's about the adventure. Further to the actual race, the event transforms into a lively outdoor festival with live bands, food stalls and markets, ensuring a fun-filled day for participants and spectators alike.
A SPECTACULAR SETTING
Located just 40 minutes from Sandton or Pretoria, Cradle Moon is a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. The venue boasts a massive 32-hectare man-made lake, surrounded by the sprawling Cradle Moon Conservancy. This natural paradise is home to a variety of African wildlife, including giraffes, zebra, wildebeest and warthogs.
For those looking to make a weekend of it, Cradle Moon offers 50 twobedroom thatched bungalows set in a game farm-like environment. The rolling hills and abundant wildlife provide a picturesque backdrop for a truly immersive experience in nature.
Xterra festivities are due to kick off on Friday, 12 October, with boat rides around the lake. It is the perfect time of year to enjoy the great outdoors and some country-style relaxation.
Mark your calendars for the Xterra Triathlon at Cradle Moon and prepare for a thrilling adventure. Early bird entries are already on sale from R500 and include an epic goodie bag. Whether you’re racing or cheering from the sidelines, this event promises a day of excitement, nature and community spirit. H
HOBBIES AND HABITS TO ELEVATE YOUR CONFIDENCE
Step out of your comfort zone. Whether that means making something from scratch, taking a social risk or learning something new, you’re bound to gain a burst of confidence from it.
Be prepared. You wouldn’t write an exam without studying, would you?
Be present. Pondering on what ifs takes your focus away from where you’re at.
Reflect on and acknowledge your achievements and your strengths.
5. Work out. Physical exercise improves your self-esteem in addition to warding off depression and anxiety.
6. Maximise your me-time by adding a dash of self-development to the mix. Treat yourself to a cup of coffee at your favourite café, but bring a self-help book or a motivational podcast along.
7. Write down your biggest dreams and then take the time to plan and visualise how you will make them come to life.
8. Block, mute and unfollow anyone on your social media channels that make you doubt yourself.
9. Practice saying no. Sometimes, the small act of saying no is the best way to prove to yourself that yes, you can!
10. Try a new fashion style or a new hairstyle. It’s true: Change is as good as a holiday.

Behind his public persona, he was a family man and now his son, Kevin - another storyteller in the family - lets his legacy live on.

Mattel Inc. recently announced that 80% of their global games portfolio will be colourblind accessible by the end of 2024. This forms part of their commitment to create more inclusive play experiences, with more than 300 million people around the globe experiencing some form of colourblindness. ALL JAZZED UP
The best Jazz spots in South Africa
From Cool Jazz and Swing to Nu Jazz and Chamber Jazz, there are myriad jazz styles of expression. But, they all hold at their heart an essence that brings beauty from an untamed structure that allows notes to vault, soar, sway and tumble in ways no other form of music can.
Jazz aficionados are drawn to the dizzying technical flourish of the trombone, bop of the bass, trill of the trumpet and satin-smooth drumbeats. In fact, anyone who hears music related to the jazz genre can identify it immediately. It’s a music style that stands out from the others.

SANCTUARY MANDELA, JOHANNESBURG
Every Sunday afternoon from 12:00 to 15:00, the Sanctuary Mandela Boutique Hotel in Houghton – converted from the home former President Nelson Mandela lived in from 1994 to 1999 –hosts sultry jazz sessions at its Insight restaurant.
Already a sophisticated venue, the property kicks into ultra-cool gear each Sunday, with different jazz artists taking to the stage each week. Visitors can book tickets and enjoy a glass of bubbly at the bar while the band plays, or settle in for a seated three-course meal from the Insight menu inspired by Madiba's favourite dishes.

THE CHAIRMAN, DURBAN
The Chairman is pretty much the OG jazz bar in the country right now, having been shuttered for the Covid-19 pandemic and re-emerging afterwards as the same sophisticated, world-class bar and cigar lounge. It stimulates the imagination and bends all the rules and conventions with creative cocktails and some of the country’s finest jazz performers.
Its plush interior is at odds with its location on Durban’s long-neglected Mahatma Gandhi Road, but over weekends the vibe The Chairman emits seems to add sparkle to the run-down surrounds. Inside, every detail has been carefully considered – from the luxurious seating, ornamental glassware and lamps to the way the drinks are presented.
Bring along your dancing shoes to get down to the beat produced by some of the country’s finest musicians working their magic in a venue designed to showcase all that is great about jazz. Or, sit back with a cigar and soak up the atmosphere. The Chairman has areas for all moods and the bar - also open on Sunday afternoons –is perfect for a chilled drink in the cozy atmosphere.

THE MARABI CLUB, DOORNFONTEIN
BLIND TIGER, JOHANNESBURG
Restaurant by day, bar by night and a jazz club every now and then, The Blind Tiger is more chameleon than big cat. Stellar food menu and thought-provoking drinks aside, it’s a cozy spot with plush couches and an old-school ambience that lends itself to settling in and having a good time.
On the last Sunday of every month, the Tiger is tamed by The Runaway Train Cult. RTC is a band of music revivalists stepping back into the past for much of their influences. The band began as an offshoot of Afrikaans roots band, Radio Kalahari Orkes and is part of a broader collective of musicians who session at Dan Roberts’ StoepStudios. Ultimately, they share a love for acoustic folk and roots music and their original influence stems from their interest in Gypsy Jazz, Bluegrass, Appalachian, Americana and New Orleans Swing. Needless to say, something new is always cooking.
1 www.blindtiger.co.za Q @blindtigercafejhb
Having celebrated The Chairman’s role in adding some stardust to a down-at-heel environment, it’s only fair to relate how The Marabi Club in the basement of the David Adjaye-designed boutique Hallmark Hotel in Doornfontein has the same effect.
It’s named for the urban culture – ‘marabi’ – that rose in the 1920s and 1930s when Doornfontein was near the centre of one of the world’s great gold rushes. Music was foundational to the culture, with energetic and improvised beats, belts and bellows helping ease away a week of hard work.
It has all the great ingredients – a dazzling atmosphere, slick service and a fine dining menu that’s the envy of more sophisticated addresses. Bands take to the stage every Thursday to Saturday and spend the evening grooving away on the atmospheric stage. One of the best sound systems in the country helps the audience feel each note as fully as the performers, who are often titans of jazz from across the country.

DRINKS SPRING
to celebrate the season
Spring is (nearly) here! That’s why we’re seeing to it that you stock up on some of the perfect floral and fynbos-inspired drinks – from pretty packaging to the perfect pairings, these are our recommendations
FYNBOS REVOLUTION
Vermouth - an ancient medicine, apératif of kings and a definite favourite from the Jazz-age - is making a comeback.
Hospitality veteran, Susanne Schneider and Ashlin Bantom (who initially applied for an assistant position at Schneider’s Western Cape Restaurant in 2015 and quickly climbed the ladder from assistant to sommelier) instantly clicked. Their friendship resulted in a creative explosion at a time when the world came to a standstill during the Covid-19 pandemic. Through Fynbos Revolution they launched a Vermouth that is true to being wild, but soft.
The Fynbos Revolution’s Flower Power Vermouths are smooth and finely balanced, celebrating nature, friendship and creativity with the pioneering combination of fine wine, time-honoured Italian infusions and the rare scents, flavours and healing properties of South Africa’s famous fynbos.
It’s not every day that you get bubbly in a can. The Cape Fynbos bubblies are a tribute to the beauty and diversity of the Cape Floral Kingdom. With it comes the benefit of it being extremely lightweight (perfect for your travels), its cylindrical shape allows for easy packing, it’s super easy to open and pour, it’s vegan-friendly and it’s also environmentally friendly. In fact, 71% aluminum is recycled globally compared to 18% plastic, which makes it the most successfully recycled material on earth.
Cape Fynbos also boasts a range of boxed and bottled wines and beautifully packaged gins. Also keep an eye out for their Cape Fynbos Rose Geranium and Buchu Cordial.
SUGARBIRD ORIGINAL FYNBOS GIN
Sugarbird’s journey started with their original fynbos gin – a floral, easy, citrussy gin with the diversity of fynbos which gives it its distinct South African flavour. This gin’s rare citrus accent is something that is unique to the Sugarbird brand, as well as its famously added hint of Cape Fynbos. P.S. They also have a stunning Safari Glitter Gin for those who enjoy a bit of bling. With every bottle of Safari Glitter Gin sold through www.kindredspirits.co.za they donate R5 to the Timbavati Foundation.

TEMPTATION FOR THE TASTEBUDS
On a cool winter’s eve, we stepped into our fancies for a night out on the town. This time, at Tempo Luxury Restaurant in Paulshof, Sunninghill for their Thursday Temptation menu, which ran until 25 July, hopefully preceding another similar offering this spring.
#HelloJoburg by Renate Engelbrecht Images: Supplied
Perhaps not everyone’s scene, Tempo is the place where Joburgers gather for a pre-dinner tipple, which evidently spills over to dinner, which evidently spills over to a night of dancing with what they call ‘evening entertainment.’ Yes, come 20:00, the mysterious curtains to the one side of the restaurant are opened and a DJ starts turning up the music for what promises to be a night of celebration.
At Tempo, you quite literally get the green light to dine to the beat. The name says it all: It’s all about the beat, the luxurious city life and of course, food and drink. On the night of our visit, green lights illuminated the space to create a vibey atmosphere for the younger crowd to chillax in lounge-type booth seats or at restaurant tables scattered all around an impressive bar with mirror roof detail that mimics the bar counters and floors. It’s here where the barmen make magic with cocktails and mocktails, which keep coming past on round trays as the night transpires.
As guests strolled in on the red carpet after being checked at the doors, a glittery photobooth invited fashionistas to pose for a pic before being chaperoned to a seat. Groups of friends made themselves comfortable in the lounge area, sharing hubbly bubblies while sipping on expensive whisky.
In our hand was the Temptation Menu - specially curated with Neo Nontso - tempting our tastebuds. Soon after ordering, three Prawn Croquettes, neatly plated with a green salad, a tangy Tuscan sauce and Parmesan custard were served as our appetizer, dampening our hunger. We ordered two mains to have the best of both worlds: Lamb Cutlets and Pork Belly. The Lamb Cutlets were served with a White Aubergine Purée, Cabbage Frikkadels, Kimchi Pickled Beetroot and Black Tuille, while the Pork Belly was accompanied by Carrot Orange Purée, Spicy Apple Salsa, Crackling, Beetroot Purée and Broccoli. What followed was Pineapple Rice Pudding, served with a Pineapple Purée, Toasted Almonds and Pineapple Cubes, and Lemon Tart with Swiss Meringue, Citrus Garnish and Dehydrated Lemon. Perhaps not the most innovative where the menu and its various puréed accompaniments were concerned, the dishes were all flavourful and elegantly plated. For us, Tempo’s overall theme leans more toward hearty dining than fine dining and we can
affirm that you definitely won’t go home hungry. We would have appreciated a more knowledgeable approach where the wine service was concerned. Still, the drinks menu is quite extensive, with cocktails and liquor seemingly being the name of the game. The Tempo Sunrise was a surprisingly refreshing drink to kick the evening off with.
Tempo was awarded Best Supper Club Restaurant at the Luxe Restaurant Awards this year, and they received the Best Restaurant in Sandton and the Best Restaurant in Johannesburg award at the South Africa Restaurant Awards.
Between champagne flutes filled with Moët & Chandon, Whisky tumblers on the tables and DJs setting the scene with your favourite beats, Tempo stands tall in the small lifestyle centre it is located in. Here, nighttime brings a whole other experience for those keen on exploring new culinary offerings in the City of Gold. H

According to Colette Boshoff, National Sales Manager at the air treatment specialist, Solenco, dry air can induce ailments and allergies. We’re all for saying goodbye to the winter’s dry air and helping it out the door by investing in a humidifier in preparation of seasons changing. Boshoff confirms that a humidifier can benefit both your skin and your health by adding bacteria-free moisture back into the air, soothing parched skin, sinuses, eyes and throats, alleviating the symptoms of respiratory illnesses and boosting overall immunity. Just what we need as we head into spring. Keep in mind that some cheaper models don’t work optimally to release moisture back into the air, while others don’t have a humidistat, which means you might be creating an unhealthy, high level of humidity. Look for ultrasonic humidifier models with HEPA-grade filters, a UV lamp or a silver ion sterilisation function to remove bacteria and other contaminants from the water mist. Evaporative humidifiers like the Stylies Alaze evaporate water into the air, which means they’re both mist and water droplet-free. You will find Solenco products at most large retailers, including @Home, Hirsch’s, Makro, Takealot, Clicks, Builders Warehouse and YuppieChef.

There will be a feature bar, central to the event, which will be part bar, part art, playfully contrasted with the famous zoomorphic world of Zioux. #HelloJoburg by Renate Engelbrecht Images: Supplied
If there is one way in which we love to celebrate womanhood, it’s by gathering the gals and going for a spa treatment. Or, even by escaping for a day and treating ourselves to a day of solitude and reflection. Here are some of our favourite Joburg spas which we can highly recommend for either:
AMELIORÉ WELLNESS & AESTHETICS
Located in Dunkeld West, this leading medical spa with its blush-coloured couches and twinkling chandeliers had us feeling like royalty from the get-go. Nestled in the intimate Hyde Square Shopping Centre, it’s the perfect mid-city escape for a quick advanced skincare or wellness treatment.
Being a medical spa, their goal is to enhance your overall well-being and quality of life through a comprehensive offering, be it medical, aesthetics, wellness or beauty treatments.
Martha was our hero of the day, considerately taking us through all the steps and guiding us
through the process. It is clear that the team at Amelioré is dedicated to providing top-notch care and service, from your arrival, right through to even after you’ve departed. They are knowledgeable, gentle and empathetic and offer their professional advice for in-house treatments, but also for at-home aftercare.
Amelioré is led by Dr Saffia Jacobs, a general practitioner who specialises in aesthetic medicine with a passion for helping clients with their skincare and wellness goals. They pride themselves on offering cutting edge technology and world-class offerings and we were rather impressed with the in-depth skin analysis, detailed feedback and guidance they provide. Their back, neck and shoulder massage also had us feeling relaxed and less tense in a matter of minutes.
Amelioré refers to their space as a “cocoon for cosmic butterflies” – an oasis where you can unwind, relax and escape the chaos of everyday living, whilst having your wellness, aesthetics and beauty needs catered to, all in one place.
The medical day spa was also recently awarded the 2024 Haute Grandeur Global Excellence Award.
SANCTUARY SPA, THE CATALYST HOTEL
Enter a bubble of quiet relaxation at this Sandton-based hotel spa, complete with various treatment rooms, as well as a sauna and a jaccuzi for additional relaxation.
It was a chilly morning when we arrived at The Catalyst Hotel’s Sanctuary Spa. We were guided to a stylish changing room with lockers, a bathroom and a shower, after which we were led to their in-house sauna for a 20 to 30-minute session of pure relaxation and proper me-time. While the sauna and its adjacent shower offered no special touches like eucalyptus leaves, natural scrubs or some of their famous Sanctuary products made from cape Fynbos, the minimalist space still encouraged us to truly focus on being present. We love how a half an hour’s sauna can assist with blood circulation and healing, while simultaneously cleansing mind, body and soul.
The sauna formed part of one of the Sanctuary Spa’s two Signature Spa Treatments and was followed by a full body massage, with the treatment process professionally explained to us every step of the way. Amidst the soft sounds of trinkling water and gentle waves, we drifted away to another world as the tension in our muscles subsided and the aromas of the natural fynbos products evoked nostalgia. A cup of tea followed in the spa’s tranquil relaxation lounge, perfect for reflection as we relived the morning’s healing by touch. Here, we had to once again remind ourselves to be at ease with silence and to utilise the rare occasion of being alone in the best way possible.
While in the middle of the city, The Catalyst Hotel’s Sanctuary Spa has a way of detaching you from reality, letting your mind and spirit soar way above the busy streets of Joburg, widening your horizons and giving you renewed physical and mental strength to face the world head-on once you depart. LIVING LIFE IN THE SKIES OF JOBURG
THE LEONARDO
Cape Town might be South Africa’s most scenic city, but Johannesburg undeniably has the most charm. With its rich history and gritty beauty, Joburg has been dubbed the most wooded city in the world, with a sprawling man-made forest shading its vast leafy suburbs. It’s also home to South Africa’s tallest building, The Leonardo.
A MODEL OF THE FUTURE AND A BEACON OF HOPE
If you can live or stay in one of Africa’s tallest buildings, limit travel and save time, why wouldn’t you? Located in Sandton, Africa’s richest square mile, The Leonardo was opened in 2020 by Legacy Hotel & Resorts as a model of sustainable urban living - the residential model of the future - allowing residents and hotel guests to live, work and play in one spot.
Built using 55,763m³ of concrete and weighing 139,407 tons (the equivalent of 19,915 male African elephants, walking trunk to tail all the way from The Leonardo to Sun City), it’s been designed to impress. The R3 billion investment, standing 234m tall and stretching over 57 stories with 6050 steps, was built during one of the country’s most economically uncertain times, serving as a beacon of hope.
A PLETHORA OF INCREDIBLE SPACES
Named after the famous artist, Leonardo Davinci, the walls, floors and ceilings are lined with an incredible collection of art and visitors and guests can enjoy guided art tours. In addition, it offers retail shops, eateries, conference and meeting facilities, a spa, a gym, an outdoor pool and deck, the hotel, residential apartments and offices. There’s even a Nature & Nurture Montessori PreSchool for tenants with small children. You can live, eat and play without ever having to leave.
AURUM RESTAURANT
The award-winning AURUM Restaurant (Latin for GOLD) on the 7th floor delivers a luxurious dining experience without being intimidating or ostentatious. The menu features Contemporary European cuisine with a touch of local flair and the wine list –unpretentious and accessible – offers the best from around the world. Its daytime setup is simple, but elegant, upgraded to lush cotton tablecloths and napery for a more romantic atmosphere at night.
ALTO234
At the top of The Leonardo is Alto234, the highest urban bar in Africa. Indulge in handcrafted tapas and Moët & Chandon bubbly
while taking in the panoramic views. You’ll see the Magaliesberg mountain range to the west, the Voortrekker Monument to the north, the former home of Nelson Mandela to the south and OR Tambo International Airport to the east. Alto234 accommodates up to 100 people across seven seating areas, each with its own unique views.
Headed up by AURUM Restaurant, the bar and food offering is nothing short of sublime. The cocktails are fun and edgy, but sophisticated and the luxury tapas menu includes a bespoke range of snacks for those feeling peckish.
CATERING AND EVENTS
All The Leonardo’s events and food offerings are catered for by the AURUM team. Whether it’s for breakfast in bed or for your gala dinner in the sweeping banqueting hall, you can expect the top-notch quality AURUM is known for.
WHO DOESN’T NEED A LITTLE R&R?
The expert team at The Leonardo’s Legacy Balance Spa is renowned for their understated excellence and a targeted skincare approach. Adjacent to the sunsoaked pool on level seven, the spa’s individual and group packages offer a refined escape from the city. They’ll ensure you leave looking and feeling your absolute best.
Whatever your work, play and stay needs might be, with so much to offer and all in one spot, The Leonardo should feature on your list of must-visit or must-stay Joburg destinations to explore. A world of adventure awaits. H
FROM SPEAKEASY CHARM TO ROOFTOP ELEGANCE
A JOURNEY THROUGH CAPE TOWN’S HISTORIC SHORTMARKET DISTRICT
#HelloCapeTown by Justyn Spinner Images: Supplied
Cape Town is renowned as one of South Africa’s, if not the world's, leading cities for culinary excellence.
On a recent trip through the historic Shortmarket district, we were fortunate to sample two of the city’s trendiest and most innovative destinations, each seamlessly blending history, innovation and exceptional flavours to create unforgettable experiences.
Our evening began with pre-dinner drinks at The Drinkery, a sophisticated speakeasy that redefines the classic cocktail experience. This was followed by an exceptional dining experience at VUE Shortmarket, a rooftop restaurant offering stunning views and a culinary adventure under the direction of a masterful chef.
THE DRINKERY: A SPEAKEASY WITH A CONTEMPORARY TWIST
Located in the heart of Cape Town's vibrant nightlife and culinary district, The Drinkery welcomes visitors with an air of refined intimacy. While not reminiscent of the smoky, clandestine bars of the 1920s, this speakeasy offers a contemporary take on the concept, housed within a historic building that adds a touch of timeless charm.
Upon entering, cosy nooks and comfortable seating areas draw you in, each providing the perfect spot to unwind and enjoy the carefully curated cocktails. The ambiance is both inviting and sophisticated, setting the stage for a night of exceptional tipples and insightful conversation.
The Drinkery’s cocktail menu pays homage to the traditions of mixology, blending classic techniques with modern flair. Two standout creations encapsulate the essence of this establishment. The Gin Martini - served dry, dirty and adorned with four green olives - epitomises elegance and simplicity. It’s a drink for the true gentleman. On the other hand, the Old Fashioned - featuring Jim Beam, muscovado, orange bitters and Angostura bitterstransports patrons to the 1800s, evoking images of cowboys, oil tycoons and railroad barons. Each sip is a journey through history, making it a fitting choice for those who appreciate the finer things in life.
VUE SHORTMARKET: CULINARY DELIGHTS ON THE ROOFTOP
After indulging in the exquisite cocktails at The Drinkery, our
journey continued upwards to VUE Shortmarket, perched on the rooftop of the same building. This vantage point offers breathtaking panoramas of Bree Street and the iconic Table Mountain in the backgroundan experience that aptly justifies the restaurant’s name.
The ambiance at VUE is equally captivating, with art deco pieces thoughtfully placed throughout the space, creating an atmosphere that is both timeless and stylish. Under the expert guidance of Head Chef, Darren Allsopp, VUE promises a culinary adventure that invigorates the senses.
The menu is a testament to Chef Darren’s skill, offering a blend of small plates designed for sharing and more substantial dishes for those seeking a hearty meal. Global influences are evident, with each dish being
masterfully balanced in flavour and presentation.
Fresh oysters take centre stage, with the Buttermilk and the Dashi Beurre Blanc being two standout preparations. The Buttermilk features a buttermilk sauce, salmon roe and everything bagel seasoning, while the Dashi Beurre Blanc is adorned with crispy Parma ham and caviar. These exquisite starters set the tone for the culinary delights that follow.
The Mushroom Faux Gras - a vegetarian mushroom parfait with pickled shimeji, marinated shiitake mushrooms and brioche - is a revelation, offering a rich and satisfying flavour profile. The climax of the meal was a massive pot of coal-baked mussels, served in a beer and chili sauce with fresh focaccia, perfect for mopping up every last drop of the delectable sauce.
Another highlight was the beef chin, cooked in a white wine and gremolata sauce with Parmesan, accompanied by the most incredible beef fat biscuits. It’s a dish that effortlessly provides warmth and comfort on chilly Cape Town evenings.
When a chef pulls out a family recipe, you know you’ve come to the right place. Dinner reached a climax with Darren’s family recipe Chocolate Torte. Rich, beautifully textured and not overly sweet, it is the ideal end to an unforgettable culinary adventure.
In exploring The Drinkery and VUE Shortmarket, one experiences not just the flavours of Cape Town, but also its spirit and innovation. Each venue, with its unique offerings and historic charm, contributes to an unforgettable night of discovery and wonder. H

COY RESTAURANT
The secret’s out! Award-winning chef, Ryan Cole, the mastermind behind Salsify at the Roundhouse, will be opening his second restaurant, this time at the V&A Waterfront. COY Restaurant will be located on the water’s edge, with Table Mountain as a backdrop and will boast a relaxed take on fine dining through a singularly unique expression of southern African cooking. “At COY we will present an ocean-inspired exploration of African produce, age-old preparation techniques, forgotten ingredients and ways of cooking. The ocean is on our doorstep and the mountain provides an exceptional backdrop, so it’s only natural that we draw inspiration from them both,” Chef Ryan explains. The Cape Town based interior designers, KT Interiors have been tasked with bringing COY to life and the space has been designed to maximise the surrounding views of land and sea. Bookings open on 9 August via Dineplan.
SIMON’S RESTAURANT
Simon’s Restaurant is a relatively modern addition to South Africa’s oldest producing wine farm, Groot Constantia, which dates all the way back to the 17th century. The striking colours, vibrant florals and animal prints of its opulent décor set the tone for an experience that delights all the senses. From breakfasts, picnics and elegant high teas to tasty sushi, hearty dinners near the fireplace and dining al fresco with your furry friends, there’s something for everyone at Simon’s. FAAEZA’S HOME KITCHEN
In the vibrant heart of the Bo-Kaap, Faaeza’s Home Kitchen is a beloved gem known for its authentic Cape Malay cuisine. This home-based eatery has grown from a local secret to a celebrated foodie destination that has served the likes of Roger Federer, Phil from Someone Feed Phil, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. It is known especially for its harmoniously aromatic Bobotie and koeksiesters (heavenly bites of syrupy sweetness). If you’re looking to taste true heritage, Faeeza’s Home Kitchen is where you’ll find it. Her passion and heritage can be tasted in every bite.

THE GRANARY CAFÉ
Located within the iconic Silo Hotel, The Granary Café offers a sophisticated, yet relaxed dining experience with breathtaking views of Cape Town’s harbour and Table Mountain. Under the leadership of Executive Chef, Veronica Canha-Hibbert the menu features a diverse range of gourmet dishes - from fresh seafood and succulent steaks to innovative vegetarian options and even some local favourites (like the Cape Malay Seafood Curry). Whether for breakfast, a leisurely lunch or an elegant dinner, The Granary Café provides excellent service and delicious food in a spectacular setting.
Located under the vines in the beautiful courtyard of Heritage Square (an 18thcentury complex), you will find Zanne’s Fare. Lovingly decorated with antique china, glass jars, teapots, fruit baskets and fresh proteas, it feels like an extension of Aunty Zanne’s (as the regulars call her) home. This fascinating woman started her career as a criminal psychologist, but her passion for cooking led her down a very different path. Despite prioritising time with her family over building her business, this mother of four’s restaurant seems to be thriving.
Zanne’s Fare serves traditional South African dishes made with love. Highlights include roosterkoek (a traditional grill-baked bread roll cooked on an open flame) with a variety of fillings, from boerewors and chakalaka to biltong. The Cape Malay Bobotie, with exactly the right balance of sweet and savoury flavours, is a symphony of textures and tastes. And, the dessert menu would not be complete without a classic Malva Pudding, while it also offers Rooibos and Milk Tart-flavoured ice cream options. This restaurant is local hospitality at its best. The food warms your heart on its way to your stomach, leaving you satisfied and surprisingly proud to be South African.
The Weltevrede Wine Estate in Bonnievale takes the traditional wine tasting to a whole new level with its ‘Captivated by Chardonnay’ experience. Not only do visitors get to learn about Chardonnay while sampling different styles of it, but they do this while making their way through a labyrinth of underground chambers. These chambers, now decked out with fascinating displays that make history come alive, were once the fermentation rooms of the century-old wine estate. The stories recounted by the tour guide foster a new appreciation for Chardonnay as you savour each sip, even before the tour culminates in a candlelit poetry reading and a tasting of Weltevrede’s famous Chardonnay, Poet’s Prayer.
Located on a historic estate, Incognito - the Alphen Hotel’s elegant cocktail bar - seamlessly blends the property’s rich 18th-century heritage with contemporary flair. Here, guests can savour an array of expertly crafted cocktails - from classics to innovative creations - in a sophisticated setting with views of the hotel’s immaculate gardens and swimming pool. On Thursday nights the experience is enhanced by the smooth sounds of live jazz as Incognito presents a lineup of some of Cape Town’s best jazz musicians before live DJs hit the decks on Friday and Saturday evenings. The name seems ironic as this is the one place where you would want to be seen.
STELLENBOSCH’S NEW WINE TASTING ROOMS AND PAIRINGS
Stellenbosch may be South Africa’s second oldest town, but don’t let that fool you. The City of Oaks sure knows a thing or two about the trends and continues to surprise with new restaurants, shops and offerings. Wine enthusiasts will be delighted by its new wine tasting rooms, including those at The Stellenbosch Reserve, Winshaw Vineyards, Grangehurst Winery, Deux Frères, Kaapzicht and Joubert Family Wines. For those looking for an experience beyond just great wine, creative new pairings include Alto’s Wine’s Winter Canapé & Wine Pairing, Ernie Els Wines’ Wine and Canapé Tastings, Blaauwklippen’s Wine & Uju Gummies Pairing, Warwick’s Wine and Lakrids (Danish liquorice treats) Pairing and Spier's Sip & Soups Tasting. RAPT - THE ART OF INDULGENCE
The word ‘rapt’ means to be completely fascinated or absorbed by what one sees or hears and Rapt - The Art of Indulgence seems to have that effect on people. This new chocolate shop - a new venture by David Donde, the genius behind TRUTH. Coffee Roasting and The Art of Duplicity - does so much more than merely sell brightly coloured chocolate bonbons in robot, Buddha and oversized rubber duck shapes. (Not that those aren’t impressive). It also offers Choc-O-Lattes (hot chocolate and coffee drinks), Sudden Ice-Cream (smoother than silk ice-cream made in front of your eyes with liquid nitrogen), a Get Baked pastry section with crokies (cookie croissants) and a Build-a-Bar counter where you can custom make your own chocolate bar.
While this store seems to have enough drawcards already, there’s more. As part of the What? Food Group, its focus is on real food without compromising your health. Rapt offers healthier options for indulgence by stripping chocolate from the unnecessary ingredients that are often used to cheapen it. A lot of their chocolates are surprisingly sugar-free, but the options are available for you to be as health-conscious as you’d like to be. To top it all off, it’s all packaged in a whimsical and Instagrammable, technicolour explosion!
With no website or social media presence, The Whatnot and China Town is something of a well-kept secret, yet this antique china shop has been going for 40 years and Kalk Bay would feel incomplete without it. Located in two interconnected apartments, it is a treasure trove of every kind of antique china imaginable, taking up sixteen rooms. The sheer volume is awe-inspiring! From Royal Doulton tea sets to fine dining ware and classic porcelain figurines, items can be purchased individually or in matching sets. This is a shop that needs to be seen to be believed.

GYPSY GRAND
AN AUTHENTIC TAKE ON FOOD, WINE AND ART
#HelloJoburg by Renate Engelbrecht Images: Supplied
When one craves the company of likeminded people, one finds a way to bring them together.
In search of something more unique than usual, we recently stumbled upon Gypsy Grand. Initially architect, Jani Plummer and her husband Paul’s home, they’ve recently transformed it into an event space where they collaborate with local chefs and artists to bring their guests a specially curated experience.
The Plummers are two creative, innovative souls who got engaged on the stand where Gypsy Grand is today. On their engagement, Paul handed Jani the papers to the stand, saying that that was where they were going to build their home. And what a home it is! Yet, when their daughter was born, they soon realised that the home - as impressive and beautiful as it was - was not meant for toddlers as it’s propped up right atop a hill in Rietondale, overlooking the city, with a rather huge drop from the deck. They therefore decided to move to a more family-friendly house, but to keep their initial home and use it to host likeminded people. They’ve kept the space in its initial state, which is what Jani believes makes it feel so welcoming.
Apart from the vertical home’s incredible views, the events they host under the name, Gypsy Grand are quickly becoming the talk of the town. We attended Gypsy Grand’s third event, named Chasing the Light. For this special evening, they collaborated with the talented Pretorian artist, Simon Menssink, who took us on an immersive journey of sketching our own versions of a short story, read to us by his wife, AnnaLize at the beginning of the evening. With Simon’s guidance, each guest got to draw a sketch inspired by the words from the story and at the end of the evening, it was magical to walk through the space and see everyone’s different takes on the narrative.
Co-host, Paul was the self-proclaimed wine pourer for the evening, keeping guests’ glasses filled with lovely wines. And, standing in for resident chef, Liza van Zyl, Loena from Picnic in a Box worked her culinary magic with a harvest table for the gods. As the maker of Pretoria’s most beautiful grazing boxes and tables, she says: “To me, each grazing box is a canvas to which I can apply colour through culinary creativity, curated with a passion for perfect pairings and aesthetic appeal.” Her grazing table at Gypsy Grand was that and more – a feast for foodies and lovers of art alike.
Gypsy Grand is an authentic take on all things food, wine and art and encourages likeminded people to engage. H

AUSTIN ROBERTS BIRD SANCTUARY
Named after the great bird expert, J Austin Roberts, the Austin Roberts Bird Sanctuary on the corner of Roper and Boshoff Streets in Nieu Muckleneuk, was dubbed a nature reserve in 1985 and still offers some great outdoor entertainment for nature and bird lovers. It is based in the Walkerspruit Open Space System, with a bird hide that can be accessed from the northern perimeter, offering a small exhibition facility. More than 170 native bird species have been recorded here, but due to urbanization and other factors, the presence of breeding pairs have declined. You can spot various heron species here, though, as well as regular water birds like the red-knobbed coot, fulvous duck, Cape teal and southern pochard among others. They have also released pinioned crowned cranes and blue cranes into the reserve, so keep your eyes peeled for those too.

FOR PEOPLE WITH GRIT SPACE GRIT
#HelloPretoria by Renate Engelbrecht Images: Supplied
Nomads, this one’s for you!
The popular Grit Space, located at The Village in Pretoria’s famous Hazelwood neighbourhood, is expanding. On 1 August 2024, they’ll be opening another workspace – this time, in the quieter, boomed-off Lynnwood Gardens Estate.
Although different to the hustle and bustle of The Village, this new space will still have the add on of awesome new retail facilities in the same development. It will also be twice the size, with a larger reception and lounge area, two more boardrooms and braai facilities for tenants. True to their original style, you can expect a very similar look and feel at the new space, with high quality, modern furniture, glass, aluminum, laminated flooring and more. Says co-owner, Lukas van der Westhuizen: “Probably the biggest difference is that we are using more of our blue than our pink.”
Having been in the game for a couple of years now, Lukas says they have found that more and more people prefer dedicated, closed spaces to work in. That said, they firmly believe that the future of shared office space is very favourable. “When times are tough, larger companies scale down and decentralize. When
things are going well in the economy, smaller companies grow out of their home-based work environments and need small, but efficient workspaces. Combined with boardrooms, one can book for meetings, reception services and registered office addresses.” It’s a business model bound to grow.
The new space will include furnished office spaces (open and closed), high-speed internet, registered address availability, quality reception and telephone services, a lounge, three boardrooms, secure and dedicated parking options, printing facilities and, most importantly, coffee. The plan is also to host personal and business development events and networking opportunities, with at least one event planned for this year still.
Ultimately, it’s all about creating a professional, yet fun working environment where like-minded people can share an office space. “We have a small, inclusive vibe, to ensure we can care about our tenants and give them the focus, attention and time they would expect, and more,” says Lukas.

CONCOCT WORLD CLASS COCKTAILS
Two Durban mixologists recently added their names to a list of nine South African World Class bartender finalists who attempted to invent cocktails worthy of a ticket to Shanghai and the international finals of this year’s Diageo World Class competition. In the end, Jody Rahme of Father Coffee walked away as the final winner, with Liam Jukes of VUE Shortmarket landing second (while also winning the Bartenders’ Choice Award) and Devon Andreka of Obscura coming in third.
The Ballito boys who took part in the three-day-long national competition, showing off their creativity, knowledge, prep techniques and commitment to continuous learning, were the independent mixologist, Jason Andrews (who eventually came in sixth), and Alchemy’s Jono Harrison.
In celebration of their achievements, we could not help but share a little bit more about them, including a recipe from each for you to try.
JASON ANDREWS
Jason started bartending while he was attending a hotel school in Durban and fell in love with mixology. He eventually joined Cunard Line’s flagship, Queen Mary 2, in 2005 and sailed around the world for six years. Finally, he returned to Durban to start a family with the dancer he fell in love with on board and now – still in the hospitality industry – he works as national sales manager for DaVinci Gourmet, supplying flavoured syrups and purees for cocktails and other drinks. Jason is very passionate about mixing cocktails and pushing the boundaries. Q

JONO HARRISON
Jono – the Head Chef at Alchemy – says his palate works just as well when he’s creating a cocktail as it does in the kitchen. He learned his skills in various Joburg and Cape Town kitchens and says he’s always had a love affair with food. Jono moved to the Karoo shortly after the Covid-19 lockdown, where he opened a café in Philipstown, as well as his own restaurant in Richmond. There, he discovered mixology while creating cocktails to complement his menus.
At Alchemy, he works closely with bar manager, Richie Nahkala, who came second in 2023’s World Class competition, ensuring that the food and drinks they offer work in harmony. H

From Mooch’s inception, every effort has been placed on creating a product designed, sourced and manufactured in South Africa. Each component is carefully considered and every effort is made to limit the carbon footprint and social impact. Wherever possible, cotton and linen are woven in South Africa. ANNE SCHWANKHART ABSTRACT ARTIST
Swiss-born Anne Schwankhart followed her now-husband to South Africa and never left again. Trained as a kinesiologist, it was only in her early forties that she came to painting. Now a fulltime artist, Anne has a home studio and normally paints in acrylics and mixed media. In her most recent body of work, she plays with the unpredictability of collage. She loves the variety, effects, possibilities and the marks it leads to. Largely inspired by nature, light, colours and the quirkiness of life, her work is layer upon layer. “Much like life,” she says. “My work is never realistic. [It’s] a result of my vivid imagination and my life, which I translate into an abstract piece of art.” She’s exhibited and sold in galleries countrywide and also sells her paintings directly. "

CHEESEMAKING AT ANTBEAR ECO LODGE
At Antbear Eco Lodge in the Drakensberg, the farm-to-fork philosophy isn't just a tagline, but a way of life. Forget pre-packaged slices. Here, cheesemaking becomes an adventure. Under the guidance of Andrew and Conny, you'll swap tourist mode for artisan cheesemaker. The process is surprisingly tactile. You'll learn to warm large pots of milk from Antbear's own contented cows, the gentle heat coaxing out its rich, creamy essence. As you stir in cultures and rennet, a sense of wonder takes hold. It's a transformation – from simple milk to the beginnings of something truly special.
The magic doesn't stop there. The curds are carefully separated from the whey, the whey itself perhaps destined to become an ingredient for rusks or a base for ricotta. Meanwhile, the curds are nurtured, cut and pressed, moulded by your hands into rustic forms. Throughout the process, these homesteading cheesemakers weave tales of tradition into the mix, while sharing their passion.
As the cheese rests, you'll move on to another essential element of the farm-to-table experience: Bread baking. The aroma of freshly milled flour will fill the air as you learn the age-old art of kneading dough. A stay at Antbear is an experience which goes beyond the norm.

BAREFOOT LUXURY FOR BIRDERS AND BOTANISTS
Standing on the mountaintop, overlooking four waterfalls – one of the Mkambati Nature Reserve’s greatest spectacles – we could think of nothing other than how insignificant we were. This immense realisation of how small we as human beings are in relation to creation, seemed to be the overall theme of our visit to GweGwe Beach Lodge, located on an untamed stretch of the Eastern Cape’s Wild Coast. Vistas across dramatic cliffs and tumbling waterfalls and the incredible blend of bush and sea allowed us to submerge ourselves in the small things that happen to make the biggest impressions.
It's been twenty years in the making and there we were - some of the firsts privileged enough to experience GweGwe Beach
Lodge as it readied itself to welcome its very first official guests. Hard work and much planning had gone into the project, with the main focus being to uplift and support the surrounding communities. Apart from management, the whole staff is from seven communities surrounding GweGwe Beach Lodge. Here, guests are encouraged to kick off their shoes and let nature nurture mind, body and soul.
While you can drive yourself to GweGwe Beach Lodge, it’s much more exciting to arrive by helicopter, boat or plane. We took a small aircraft from Virginia Airport, which offered the most incredible panoramas of the coastline - from Durban’s skyscrapers lining the beach, all the way to the contrasting hills of the Eastern Cape, dotted
unevenly with ivory-coloured huts. We landed on a grassy airstrip - muddy from recent rains. To our left, vast grasslands welcomed us to the reserve, and to our right, the ocean was almost out of place as we spotted zebra and eland en route to the lodge.
After a quick drive to get our bearings and a brisk stop at the beautiful Mkhambathi Falls, the final stretch to the lodge (and a hard-earned welcoming drink) was on foot. Hiking down to the lodge was a unique and immersive experience, instantly giving us a feel for where we’re at. After finding our way through a short stretch of beachside forest, waves gently glided onto the beach in front of us, with GweGwe Beach Lodge just beyond. We were told to take off our shoes and walk over to the lagoon where a group of Pondo
ladies welcomed us in song. A glass of Lubanzi Rosé Bubbles was handed to each of us. The Cap Classique is named after a wandering dog that led the makers across the Wild Coast for six days. Now, GweGwe and Lubanzi share a similar mantra: Locally run, globally minded.
The lodge’s rooms – separate villas – all have ocean views, with the interiors boasting subtle décor elements inspired by the surrounding cultural communities. Raw additions like wood, woven basket light fittings and rammed earth walls feature all across the lodge and colour has been brought in with turquoise and white scatter cushions, throws and towels. Unique features, like a map of the Mkambati Nature Reserve and the coastline on the restroom wall, make for great conversation starters over a glass

of wine in the lodge’s simplistic, yet elegant bar with its fishnetinspired ceilings.
While GweGwe Beach Lodge is the place to kick off your shoes and relax, the adventurous at heart would be happy to know that here, it’s very easy to fill your days. In fact, our second day at the lodge was packed with adventure. We kicked off with a quick coffee and granola before dashing off to the lagoon where the GweGwe team waited eagerly. The lagoon is the perfect spot for families to enjoy the water while also having the benefits of the beach, including beautiful views of the sunrise over the ocean. From kayaks to stand-up paddling, we could pick and choose and some of us were even brave enough to take an early morning plunge, with the waves of the Wild Coast luring the aquaphiles in. We opted for stand-up paddling and made our way along the estuary – an almost meditative way to start the day – listening to birdsong and immensely aware of the ocean’s hymns. A heartwarming brunch followed, with the kitchen team cooking up a storm, and then, we were ushered into the game vehicle, ready for a day of exploration.
Our first stop was a viewpoint overlooking the Mtentu River and four waterfalls. Gobsmacked, we slowly made our way to the cliff from where we could spot three Cape Vultures circling over the river and three of the four falls glistening in the sun. It was also here, on the plateau, where we spotted the most unique Everlasting species, and exquisite wild orchids.
We’d been curious about the Pondo Marine Protected Area and could not wait for the marine walk, which was up next. As we strolled along the mostly deserted beach, we treaded lightly to not step on barnacles or Natal rock oysters. We sieved through shells like we hadn’t done in years – finding numerous opercula (Hermit Crabs’ shell doors also known as Mermaids’ Nipples). Then, we followed White Fronted
Plovers to where a whale had washed out a couple of years ago, with only its upper jaw remaining on the beach.
It was during this marine safari that we spotted the most magnificent creature, gently weaving its way through the rocks. The octopus opened her tentacles wide as if performing a dance, and slowly maneuvered her way to find a spot where she could be less visible.
As our day of adventure drew to a close, we stopped at the spot where we initially started our GweGwe experience: The Mkhambathi Falls. This is one of the few waterfalls in the country where the falls land directly in the ocean – the perfect spot to pause and reflect on a day we would not soon forget. Some braved the rocks and took a cold shower underneath the falls, while we sipped on a glass of Lubanzi bubbles as we tried to etch the views into memory. It was a day filled with so many incredible visuals and as we arrived back on the beach below the lodge, we gladly kicked off our shoes to take a seat around a bonfire on the beach for some pre-dinner drinks. Dinner was served outside that evening – local dishes lovingly prepared with nothing but the sound of the ocean as backtrack for our chatter.
GweGwe beach Lodge is paradise for botanists and birders alike. It’s where monotone mornings turn into colourful afternoons; the sun highlighting violet, white and yellow veld flowers as you drive through the reserve. It’s where you relearn to spot the small things – from the evidence of spittlebugs to the famous flight of the cisticolas. It’s a 7000ha piece of land with over 200 endemic species and it’s where – between various resprouters and reseeders – you might just spot your very first Black-rumped Button Quail. Well, we did, and that convinced us to fit in one last bucket list item before hopping back onto that little aircraft. A short birding walk was the grand finale to our visit at GweGwe Beach Lodge. In fact, we’ve learned so much from that
mere 30 minutes in the veld, that we’ve now also taken to birding. The Olive Sunbird curiously came to inspect and then disappeared. So small, yet so
incredibly perfect. Like GweGwe Beach Lodge. The reserve might be small and the lodge rather intimate, but the emotions it conjures are unfathomable. H

NAMAQUALAND
When one talks about floral safaris, the first South African destination that springs to mind is the ever-popular Namaqualand region. Here, flowers are the inspiration behind every fairytale, with purple, white and orange blooms usually appearing around the end of July, depending on the rainfall. Seemingly overnight, Namaqualand’s dusty valleys are transformed into a wonderland of gousblomme, vygies, nemesias, lachenalias, babianas and ixias. In a good year, this West Coast region’s flowers can continue to bloom well into September, with those in the know saying it’s still safe to go up until around the 10th of September.
If you’re keen on doing a self-drive safari (we’re sure the Jimny would be great for it), a week should suffice. That way, you will have ample time to stop where and for however long you like. There are numerous accommodation options available in the area, including Airbnb apartments, houses and even cabins to rent.
WHERE TO STAY
De KrantzHuis @ Elandsvoetpad in Nieuwoudtville is one place that tickles our fancy. Consisting of two bedrooms, you can rent the entire house for a rejuvenating, peaceful stay on the summit of the Van Rhyns Pass.

Another Namaqualand stay worth looking into is Tzorvas Accommodation just outside of Springbok. Their wooden chalet is partly solar powered and boasts the most magnificent sunsets over the flowerdotted veld. It’s also the ideal stay for young families who would like their kids to experience real farm life. While they usually only accommodate two guests, there is a sleeper couch downstairs where the kids can crash.

GIVE YOUR HERITAGE
HOME
A MODERN TWIST
Tips and tricks to liven up an old house
#HelloLifestyle by Renate Engelbrecht Images: Supplied
There is a term, modern heritage style, where traditional design elements are combined with contemporary elements. Think wood paneling, rich autumnal colour palettes and patterned wallpaper, mixed with modern accents in art, decorative objects and furniture shapes.
If you want your heritage home to appear more modern, all you need to do, is to add a few contemporary elements to the mix. Ultimately, you want to create a dance between traditional and modern design. When this is done well, your heritage home will have new life!
ORIGINAL FEATURES
First and foremost, do not let go of your heritage home’s original features. Luckily, there are various rules and regulations in place when it comes to changing a heritage home. Still, think carefully about those features you are allowed to change, as they might just be the key to turning a room into an authentic space worth including in a décor magazine. We recommend contacting an expert in heritage home renovations, like the Gauteng-based CS Design, to assist you in seeing the bigger picture.
Many period homes have architectural details that date back to a certain era and if you’re clever, these can be utilised to modernise your home. For instance, by painting woodwork in a contrasting shade to the wall, or painting the vintage ceilings a different colour could
give a space a contemporary look while still keeping it rooted in the past.
UPCYCLE WHERE YOU CAN
Heritage pieces can be beautiful, but when you have an old home filled with vintage furniture, it can quickly seem dated. So, upcycle some of the furniture pieces by giving them a trendy layer of specialist paint. Annie Sloan’s products are ideal for this purpose and come highly recommended. Additionally, recover some of the vintage pieces to give it a more modern look and feel. Creators Studio in Centurion is a great place to start when you want to look at reupholstering and modernising some of your furniture pieces.
LET YESTERYEAR BRING INSPIRATION
You could also look at bringing in some custom-made furniture pieces with a vintageinspired story, like the Tulbagh Chair and many other unique pieces from Pedersen + Lennard, or items from Soft & Co like their Finn Server Unit, Leo Bedside Table or Jones Armchair - all from their Cozy Range. We also love their Juno Bed End.
AWKWARD NOOKS AND CRANNIES
Older homes often have strange or awkward spaces and odd proportions like spare alcoves or inexplicable corners. From these, you can create the loveliest reading nooks or display areas for indoor plants like orchids. House Beautiful recommends that you decorate these spaces with lots of colour to increase their appeal and to make them feel more modern. (www.housebeautiful.com). You can also look at using these spaces for unique art pieces. Consider supporting up-andcoming young artists through organisations like the Bag Factory (www.bagfactoryart. org.za), contributing to their long-term development. Investing in original art not only supports creativity, but also holds the potential for increased value over time. Tip: Use thin black or white frames for artworks to make it appear more modern. Transparent acrylic photo frames are also quite popular.
A MIX OF OLD AND NEW
When it comes to sanitaryware, it’s often better to opt for new items as they are more economical and make more sense functionally. Bathtubs and basins both need to be practical and obviously, you also want them to be beautiful. Some of the most beautiful bathtub options we’ve
come across include the Rossco Greco Bath from EPS Bathroom and Kitchen; the Dado Amsterdam Bath from Euro Bath; the Trevi Ntombi White Acrylic Freestanding Bath from CTM and the Zara Freestanding Bath from Bella Bathrooms and Tiles. For basins, we can recommend Eurotrend’s Palermo Round Modern Basin, the Murus Forest Green Wall Mounted Basin from Leroy Merlin, the gold Flavio Basin from Euro Bath & Tile or the Greco Countertop Basin (matt concrete grey) from Bella Bathrooms.
WONDEROUS WALLPAPER
Many older homes come with vintage wallpaper from the heydays and together with vintage furniture, outdated colours and clutter, it can be too much. But, if you choose wisely, trendy wallpaper can liven up a space in an instance, provided that the rest of the room is relatively calm in terms of textures and colour. Check out Hertex Haus’ Prints Charming range, of which we favour the Palmbloom in Whitewash, Nottingham in Starlight and Wild Sprig in Sleet. Dreamweaver Studios’ Eijffinger Oasis Flight of the Birds wallpaper, and the Fiori Astratti wallpaper from KNUS are also beautiful.
KEEP IT SIMPLE
A period home often has a lot of detail in its architectural design already, so be careful not to over-clutter it. In fact, rather keep it simple and uncluttered and bring in furniture pieces with neutral colours. You can always enhance these with scatter cushions, plants and more.
TENDER LOVING CARE
A little TLC also goes a long way when it comes to heritage homes. We’d suggest starting there and giving the house a little love to liven it up a bit. If the house boasts antique, wooden floors, consider stripping it from old varnish, sanding it and repairing it. Then, choose the right finish, keeping in mind that oil-based finishes enhance the beauty of wooden floors, while water-based finishes offer a clear, non-yellowing finish. If you want to keep it authentic, do your research on which finishes are historically accurate to the period of the floors.
If the exterior of the house needs a new layer of paint, do it. Remember to check the downpipes and gutters too, as well as the roof. Give old door handles and vintage light fittings a good clean to let them shine as part of the uniqueness of the house. Keeping the general colour scheme of the house light, especially indoors, will make it look and feel fresh.
Modernising a heritage home might seem like quite the task, but it could also be a wonderful journey to make the house home. H

TO SECURE OLD MONEY FORWARD THINKING
With many South African retirees struggling to make ends meet as things stand, we can’t help but wonder if the buzz word, old money, is even a thing in South Africa? Still, as we’re talking heritage this September, and heritage and inheritance go hand-in-hand, it’s probably worth looking into how one should be planning forward when it comes to leaving not only a legacy, but an inheritance for your loved ones…
Understandably, many people argue that life insurance - insurance meant to cover your debts when you pass away - is one of the first things that can be removed from the monthly budget once things get tough. Who wants to think about what happens after you die, after all? Yet, we believe that the best inheritance you can leave for those you love, is the gift of no debt. Yaaseen Albertyn, Executive Head of Business and Client Solutions at Metropolitan, agrees. In fact, he says even when you don’t have any major debt that needs to be covered in the event of your death, you still shouldn’t drop your life cover. “Life cover doesn’t only protect your loved ones in death; it also looks after you and your dependents should you become critically ill or disabled and no longer able to earn an income or provide for your family.”
Life insurance also allows you to leave money behind for your family as a form of inheritance, helping kickstart their journey towards generational wealth. Perhaps there can be some old money, after all… If you plan on leaving assets in your estate to your loved ones, tax implications attached to these assets should be considered. Your family might need some liquidity to access their inheritance without needing to sell assets to free up funds. Albertyn says that is where life insurance can assist.
As a rough guideline, Albertyn says the simplest rule of thumb for how much life cover to aim for, is to take your annual income and multiply it by ten. This figure may vary, depending on your age, though. “For example, at around 65 years old, you might only need around five times your annual income in life cover, as you would (hopefully!) have saved enough for retirement. If you are in your twenties, you might need twenty to thirty times your annual income because your dependents would be younger, and your income is expected to grow as you age.”
SO, INSTEAD OF DROPPING YOUR LIFE INSURANCE, HERE ARE SOME TIPS ON HOW ELSE YOU CAN MAKE ENDS MEET:
1. If you can only afford one, consider trading your funeral cover for life insurance and just make sure that your life insurance includes a funeral benefit.
2. Instead of letting your policy lapse, rather decrease your premium.
3. If you are nearing retirement or if you are already retired, check to see if your policy offers a cash-back or paid-up benefit. H
