Interlaken Ice Magic is probably one of the most glamorous ice-skating rinks in the whole of Switzerland. Frozen pond skating is also an incredible experience and Schwarzsee is definitely

Albula Skate line Zürich Albula

one of the most beautiful lakes in the country. Our top pick however is the Albula skate line: skating through a winter wonderland scenery, surrounded by snowy forests – there’s nothing quite like it!

Skating on Schwarzsee Zürich Schwarzsee

Interlaken Ice Magic Zürich Interlaken

This skate line in Surava, a small village in the Albula Valley, Graubünden, is created for skaters every winter.

Schwarzsee in the region of Fribourg is well-known for its authenticity and its wild, romantic natural landscape.

Interlaken’s city center transforms into an ice-skating extravaganza starting mid-December.

The line is three kilometers long and it is usually open until 9pm (except Sundays) for spectacular nighttime skating. If you’re not sure where to place Surava, the village is located on the world-famous railway line between Chur and St. Moritz.

As soon as the lake has frozen and is safe to walk on, it becomes a breathtaking backdrop for enjoying a spot of ice skating.

Interlaken Ice Magic means 5 skating rinks of various sizes, including a large skating arena of 750 m2, a children’s ice rink and a curling rink, all connected by 450 m of ice runways.

Even though it stands at just 900 meters above sea level, the conditions here are ideal for ice tracks.

Enjoy a unique experience on the frozen mountain lake, where you can practice your pirouettes surrounded by dreamlike scenery.

When the ice is thick enough, there is also a Bavarian curling area available every day.

In the evening, beautiful light installations give the place an extraordinary look.

HIDDEN ZURICH

See spots only known to Zurich ‘insiders’ Written by: Karen Rudin

Photo: A view over Grossmünster © Christof Sonderegger/ Switzerland Tourism

You’re already familiar with the major tourist sites in Zurich so maybe you’re ready for the ‘secret’ ones. Hidden Zurich, we’ll call it, as these are venues “on the beaten track” but tucked away out of sight.

8

1. Start at the Polybahn funicular Turn right after leaving the funicular and you will find a large terrace with a super view over the city and the Albis.

5. Schwarzenbach food shop Trek uphill to the food shop Schwarzenbach. Once inside, you’ll feel transported back more than 150 years to when the shop was built.

2. Visit the Central Library Descend by Polybahn and walk to the Central Library at Zähringerplatz 6. On floor - 4 there is a corner given over to the North American Library.

6. Grossmünster crypt You have certainly visited the Grossmünster, but have you been in the crypt, with its wall paintings dating from 1500? There is a surprise statue inside!

3. A tiny, charming museum Leaving the library, walk along the open square to the Musée Visionaire at Predigerplatz 10, dedicated to “outsider art”. A recent exhibition featured realistic knit shapes that resembled food.

7. Wasserkirche Even the entrance to this church is hidden. Around the back is a little glade of trees with a statue of the famous Reformation pastor, Huldrych Zwingli.

4. A hidden garden restaurant Time for a coffee? Stroll along to the Neumarkt restaurant at Neumarkt 5. In summertime, head to the garden restaurant, completely enclosed and quiet.

8. Roman baths The small ancient Roman baths are hidden away on Thermengasse. Only the supporting stone pilings below street level remain of the ancient structure, but explanatory posters in English on the walls present the baths as they once were.

9. Not your ordinary police station The Amtshaus 1 headquarters at Bahnhofquai 3 is not your ordinary police location, as the front hall features an amazing zany painted ceiling in yellows and orange, the work of Swiss artist Augusto Giacometti. 10. Take in the view at Lindenhof End your walk at Lindenhof, with its quiet ambience of past elegance and graceful old houses. A fitting end to our tour of some of the hidden, the tucked away, and the unexpected aspects of Zurich.

MEET THE AUTHOR Long time Zurich resident Karen Rudin was a chemistry teacher and is now a translator.

CARNIVALS February-March The most significant carnivals in Switzerland Carnival customs are a mixture of various pagan spring rites, Christian rituals and secular folk traditions. They involve the summoning of the sun and the chasing away of winter. Although there may be carnivals in many cities across Switzerland, the most prominent in the country is probably Basel, followed by Lucerne. Put on a costume, any costume, and join the festivities! 13 –16 February

Carnival

The most colorful and snowy carnival in the Yverdon-les-Bains region. Three days of celebrations, with a procession, huge parade of funny floats and Guggenmusik bands.

A major attraction of the Lucerne Carnival are the Guggemuusige, or improvised (masked) bands. Unlike their counterparts in Basel, they make frequent stops, acting out scenes and mingling with the crowd.

The Brandons of Payerne are one of Switzerland’s oldest carnivals. In 2020, they are celebrating their 125th anniversary.

Carnival

Every year the float theme is quite interesting. In 2019 it was ‘From the times of the Romans’, so we’re looking forward for the 2020 theme!

Bellinzona is a carnival stronghold. This carnival is known as the “Rabadan”, which means “noise” in the Piedmontese dialect.

Bellinzona

27 – 29 March

An amazing fiery carnival parade. Expect fire, flames and a whole lot of firemen. This is Switzerland after all.

The “drey scheenschte Dääg” (three best days), as the locals call them, are also an incredible experience for visitors to the city. Around 20,000 active participants celebrate for three days, accompanied by music and beautiful carnival lanterns.

Rabadan

A very fun carnival with a twist: this year’s theme is Japan. Expect loud music and mad parties.

CAN’T FIND LOVE IN SWITZERLAND?

It’s time to change your chances Written by: René Joy Dénervaud

into a different state of mind and allows your energy to change from a lonely, hopeless person to, who is that? I want to know who this person is! When you are confident and free, you become approachable. No one likes rejection, so when you are like this, people will find it easy to invite you out with them and their friends. In turn, you get to meet more and more people. Change the venue And while you are practicing these new habits, start going to places you’d want to spend time at with your special someone. Into guys/ gals who like art? Stop going to bars and feeling like there’s no one and start going to museums. Adapt your approach to each day little by little with these few tips. There is much more to be unpacked, but this is a great place to start.

Finding love in Switzerland is no easy task, but if you‘re going to put yourself out there then here’s what you need to do. Always. Be. Ready. They say being on holiday is when you’re most open because everything is new and your senses are more alert. Begin to explore your days with this ready attitude as you adjust to your new life here. Your energy will come across as delightful, fresh and confident. Everyone wants to be around others like that. You’ll soon get invitations to hang out and meet up with new friends, which is a sure

way to meet someone - possibly - special for you. I say ‘possibly’ because you never want to place too much emphasis on one outing or person from the get-go. It’s way too much pressure for yourself and the unsuspecting person you’ve set your eyes on. But where do I show everyone my confidence and delightfulness so that I can get these invites, you ask? Up your confidence Are you an outdoors runner? Anyone can say, cute dog! to the person walking their dog without being looked at strangely. At the office? Find something nice to say instead of complaining. All of this gets you

MULTIPLE SAVINGS WITH PILLAR 3A Achieve significant tax savings with Pillar 3a The government provides tax incentives for deposits and payouts in order to promote 3a savings. With some skilful planning, you can enjoy multiple savings. Credit Suisse will show you how. Voluntary pension provision with Pillar 3a is becoming increasingly important since, in order to maintain the accustomed standard of living during retirement, 1st and 2nd pillar benefits are often not sufficient. For this reason, the Swiss government rewards 3rd pillar deposits with tax incentives.

Saving tax with Pillar 3a Those who plan ahead have an advantage. 1. How to save income tax when paying into Pillar 3a Each year, employed persons may pay an amount into their Pillar 3a and deduct that from their taxable income. Gainfully employed persons with a pension fund are entitled to deduct up to a maximum of CHF 6,826 for 2019. For employed persons without a pension fund, this amount is 20% of net earned income, up to a maximum of CHF 34,128. 2. Save additional taxes during the savings term During the entire savings term, you benefit from the fact that no wealth tax is levied on your savings deposits. Interest and returns generated during the term are also not taxed.

3. Save taxes with smart withdrawals from Pillar 3a During payout of the retirement savings, taxes are due, but they are separate from other income and at a reduced tax rate. Good planning is especially important here, since staggered withdrawals can, depending on the canton and the circumstances, break the tax progression.

bilingual Matura. At the same time, they have the opportunity to complete the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, a globally recognised university entrance qualification. The success rate of SIS Matura and IB graduates is typically of a very high level. Over the past two years, 100% passed the Matura and roughly 80%, the IB exams at SIS. After taking on this combination of Matura and IB, there is no limit to where our students’ educational journey can take them next – whether abroad or in Switzerland, the sky is the limit during and after SIS.

Join SIS’ diverse school community of Swiss and expat families and pave your child’s way to a bright future abroad or in Switzerland with bilingual education in English and German. International Education – Local Insight SIS is a private, bilingual day school providing high quality education from kindergarten to college. The school’s curriculum is based on the local Swiss curriculum and is supplemented by elements of international curricula. SIS’ unique educational concept offers students an international education without being isolated from the local community. Moreover, SIS provides a structured and challenging day school programme including lunch, before and after school care, as well as exciting extracurricular activities - also during school holidays.

For Expat and Swiss Families We take pride in our multicultural school community of expat and Swiss families. The two school languages, German and English, act as a bridge connecting the diverse nationalities. Everyday school life is enriched by this diversity on all levels; however, we also place great value on establishing ties with the local community.

We use the immersion method of language learning, which over a number of years results in near-native fluency in the second language. Bilingualism, however, is not a requirement for entry at any level. Special programmes help students to quickly bring their German or English skills up to the necessary level for joining classes – free of charge.

GET CONNECTED WITH THE SIS TEAM OF EDUCATORS: Marcel Stähli is the CEO of SIS Swiss International Schools Schweiz AG. SIS operates 16 bilingual, private day schools in Switzerland, Germany and Brazil with more than 3,800 students attending classes from kindergarten through to college.
