Northern Vance’s Zack Orr — the last remaining area wrestler competing in state competition — was eliminated with a loss in the consolation bracket Saturday. A loss in the preliminaries Friday put Orr in the consolation bracket. At 130 lbs., Orr won his first consolation match against Luis Sanchez of South Central. Orr was defeated by Aaron Orr Trull of Candler Enka in round two by a 10-3 decision. Trull went on to lose to Cameron Union Pines’ Randy Stevans, who ended up winning the consolation final to take third place overall in the 130 lbs. class. Three other area wrestlers — Northern’s Josh Pendergrass (119 lbs.), and J.F. Webb’s Toby Bellissimo (140 lbs.) and Brent Adcock (heavyweight) — advanced to states, but were defeated in the first round of the consolation bracket Friday. The state tournament was held at the Greensboro Coliseum.

Fishing in the ‘Land of Giant Bass’

I

spent one day last weekend fishing in the Land of Giant Bass, Shearon Harris Lake. This lake has some huge bass and I like to go there every spring when I can. Last year, I caught the largest largemouth bass of my life there on February 23, a 10 lbs., 1 oz. monster that I hope to have printed in Bassmaster magazine in a few months. I was in such a hurry to get there Saturday morning that I received a speeding ticket going 70 miles per hour in a 55 zone crossing the Tar River Bridge. It sure looked like a 65 mph zone, Walt and I appreciate the state Bowen patrolman On the Water explaining Weekly the difference between 55 and 65. If any of you know a good attorney who can help me out with this, please email me. While no super hogs came to my boat Saturday, one that looked close to 5 pounds (but would have been short of the 20-inch slot limit) fell for a small shad rap (No. 5) in a shad color. Unfortunately, I tossed her back right before remembering that I wanted to take a picture, and had to make do with the photo of the 13-inch fish I caught a little later in the day. I heard reports from several small bass club tournaments held there last weekend where no keeper fish were caught, and one other small event where a single bass weighing close to 9 pounds won.
