New day, new year for Northern Vikings determined to snap skid By KELLEN HOLTZMAN DISPATCH STAFF

ast season couldn’t have ended much worse. Northern Vance dropped a 21-20 heartbreaker at home in its regular season finale, yielding a winless season along with the longest losing streak in the state at 21 games. Then a postgame fight erupted, ultimately resulting in the dismissal of a Northern assistant coach and Vance County Schools placing the program on probation through the 2014 season. The Vikings are eager to rid themselves of the bitter taste of defeat. And with a junior varsity team back in the works — along with a few new assistant coaches — a different vibe surrounded Northern’s preseason practices. “It feels more new era today,” said senior center Justin Care. “It’s a new day, a new year. We want to win this year.”

SPECIAL TEAMS

Subsequently, Northern goes about six deep in kick returners, marking what is quite possibly the least of Watkins’ concerns. Add in sophomore kicker Brooks Falkner and special teams could be one of the Vikings’ strong suits. “He’s booting it,” said Watkins. “He’s hitting them from 40 out. So that’s a plus.

Pieces, potential for Webb

Warriors putting faith in large junior class By KELLEN HOLTZMAN DISPATCH STAFF

J

.F. Webb’s goal hasn’t changed. Seeking to improve on last season’s 3-8 campaign, the Warriors are shooting for the state playoffs in Tony Midgette’s second season as head coach. Webb did end the 2013 season with an exciting win at Northern Vance, but that victory was marred by a postgame brawl between the rivals. Midgette is confident his players are buying in, especially the large junior class. “They’re really dedicated to getting this done, getting it turned around,” said Midgette. “They’re always here, always putting in extra work.” Will the extra work equal more wins?

SHORING UP SECONDARY

If it does, the defensive backfield will likely be a major reason why. Breaking down film, Midgette saw that defending the pass may have been the team’s biggest weakness last

QUARTERBACK

Webb enters its second consecutive season without an experienced signal caller. Last year, converted receiver Beau Smith took the job as a senior. When Smith suffered an injury late in the season, backup Brandon Phillips saw time under center. Phillips is back as a senior and competing with Tre Harris and Alex Weaver. Midgette said the starter wouldn’t be named until the MARK DOLEJS / Dispatch file photo week of the Warriors’ opening J.F. Webb’s Trevon Harris passes to a receiver during the NFL High game at Granville Central. School Player Development football camp in June. season. Starting spots weren’t locked down in the early stages of preseason practice, but Midgette liked what he saw in the competition. “The secondary could be the difference this year,” he said. “I think this year we’re going to do a better job of covering the deep ball.

REPORTING FOR DUTY

Putting pressure on opposing quarterbacks throwing those deep balls will be defensive tackle Gearl Majors, a 6-foot-3, 285-pound senior drawing interest from ACC and SEC schools. Majors also has a scholarship offer from Elon. His sister is former Webb girls hoops standout Tyler Hobgood. “He’s a workhorse, very athletic for his size,” said

Midgette. “He moves just as good as any linebacker we have.” Two linebackers that stood out in preseason were juniors Rakym Winstead and Jarred Webb. Webb, a 6-foot-2, 215-pound junior, is a Southeast Guilford transfer and also lines up at receiver and tight end.

IN THEIR HANDS

The go-to tight end is likely Deshawn Lewis, a 6-foot-2, 260-pound junior. “He’s going to be awesome,” said Midgette. “I think he can catch about anything.” Lewis’ blocking ability should also be a factor on offense, as is Dallas Daniels, a senior in his first season. Midgette said the 6-foot-3 Daniels can run, jump and catch and should be a deep threat

RUNNING BACK

The starter at running back isn’t a question; It’s Tevin Evans, who succeeds thousand-yard rusher Tobiah Lewis.

Midgette said if Evans stays healthy, he should be all-conference. “He’s the type of back we like,” said Midgette, “in that 5-9, 5-10 range; 215-220. He can run. He’s a big kid. He’s going to be a workhorse. We’re very excited about him.” Blocking along with Lewis are three returning offensive lineman: Majors, Kyle Williamson and Doug Wentworth. “We haven’t added that much new stuff,” Midgette added. “We’ve added to our passing game. Other than that, we’re going to run the football. The tempo is our main thing.”

A physical education teacher at Northern, Bryan wants the tennis program to be respected around the school. “I just want us to be known for hard practices,” she said, “to be known for being just as good as other sports across the board, if not better.” Tamika Autry and Meredith Stevenson are the team’s only seniors and Bryan said Stevenson, Imani Simmons and Caroline Oakley have established themselves as the top seeds. “Definitely have potential to be a really good season,” said Bryan. “I know that we have a really strong conference. Webb planned for at least two seniors: Morgan Williams and Pratt Winston. “All the seeds are wide open,” said Darden. “I just have no idea who is going to occupy them.” Darden added, “I like the kids I know who are coming in.”

Lofty goals for loaded Spartans KVA returns strong squad, welcomes key additions By KELLEN HOLTZMAN DISPATCH STAFF

T

wo seasons ago, Kerr-Vance Academy was loaded with seniors on its way to an unbeaten conference campaign before falling in the N.C. Independent School Athletic Association Class 1-A semifinals. KVA rebuilt last season. Now this year marks the return of another large senior class, about 11 strong, and the Spartans are hoping to replicate the success of that 2012 team — with the goal of taking it two steps further. “Hopefully become a champion overall this year,” said KVA’s second-year head coach Devon Honeywell. The Spartans could have the team to do it with the core of the squad having played club soccer together through the spring and summer. A player in that mix is Southern Vance transfer Lorenzo Ortiz, a senior with a nose for goal. “We’re looking for great things from him,” said Honeywell. Ortiz lines up at center forward although Honeywell expects the other two forwards in his 4-3-3 formation to complete a dynamic, fluid strike force. They are seniors Joseph Burnette and Jordan Hogge. Juan Lopez, Colin Pegram and Sam Fuquay form a triangle in midfield in front of central defenders James Averette and Caleb Weiss. The fullback positions are up for grabs with Lorenzo’s talented freshman brother, Valentin, likely to take a spot. Honeywell said the team is meshing. The result could be some elusive hardware, although Honeywell doesn’t want the team to get ahead of
