VOORWOORD | FOREWORD

Paul du Preez My father may have thought of himself as many things: husband, father, policeman, mechanic, lay-preacher and, later on, even farmer, but ‘photographer’ was never one. And yet, I don’t remember my father ever going far without his camera in hand. It is with great pride that I share with this community my father’s photographs taken on his “bush trips” whilst serving in the South African Police. Hermanus Carel Jacobus Herklaas (Harry) du Preez was born on 21 December 1929 in Durban to parents Hermanus Carel Jacobus du Preez and Maria Johanna Glodiena Jacoba du Preez nee Kruger. He was the first born of three sons followed by Andries (Andrew) and Lukas (Luke). His father died when he was in Standard 6 (Grade 8) forcing him to drop out of school and find work to help support his widowed mother and younger brothers. He first worked as painter on the railways and then in 1949, at the age of 19, joined the South African Police. Harry was assigned to the Mounted Police and, after leaving the depot, was stationed at Wentworth SAP where he stayed in the “Police Camp” as it was then known. In the early 60s, Harry transferred to the Mechanical Branch of the SAP and was stationed at Wentworth garage. I have fond memories of always being given an ice-cold coke from the coke fridge in the tearoom when I would visit the garage to see my father. When the new Jacobs Police Garage was completed, Harry was then stationed there and held the rank of Warrant Officer. It was during these early years that he made his many “Bush Trips” to the then-named Rhodesia. On my father’s return from each of these trips, I have fond memories of him setting up his slide projector in our lounge and proudly sharing his photographs of his adventures with my mom, sisters and me, and close family friends. As Harry had left school early, he did not have a matric. I remember my father leaving early for work and then spending his evenings in the caravan in the back yard, studying. I was too young to understand at the time that what he was doing was studying towards his “Police Matric”. He must have passed it, because one day in 1979 he came home and broke the news that he had been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and with that came the inevitable transfer - we were heading off to Kimberley for five years. We arrived in Kimberley early in 1980 where Harry was based at the Kimberley garage on Schmittsdrift Road; second in command to Captain Ben Stander. I remember him travelling regularly through the Northern Cape doing inspections and remember him also sometimes being on call to drive the breakdown. His office used to be next to the main gate at the inspection bay and I used to be able to say hello to him every day on my way back from school and spent a lot of time at the garage. During his time stationed in Kimberley, Harry was promoted to the rank of Captain and back to Jacobs Garage in Durban we went in 1984. Not long after, Harry decided to take early retirement at the age of 55. The story is not clear, but he told me what prompted him was another promotion and accompanying transfer to Ondangwa, which my mother was having nothing of; along with the fact that I had just started high school and they were loath to have me move schools again. So, on 30 June 1985, Harry ended his journey with the SAP. 6 Nongqai Vol 13 No 1E – Photo Album – Harry du Preez

Not one to sit and do nothing, he sent himself on a building course at Corobrick in Durban and proceeded to make all manner of modifications to our home on the Bluff. He also kept himself busy, together with his brothers who were all mechanically minded, with buying and selling motor vehicles. The beauty of the Northern Cape must have made a deep impression on him, because in 1991, he moved from Durban to Warrenton (a small town about 70km from Kimberley) and spent the next 26 years there until his wife, our mother Louvaine, died in 2017. Harry now resides at the Arcadia Home for the Aged in Greytown KZN and is a relatively healthy 91 years old, a much-loved father of three, grandfather of 6 and great-grandfather of 4. During His Service Harry was Awarded the following: • 1968 Police Medal for Faithful Service • 1973 Police Medal for Combatting Terrorism • 1976 Bar to Police Medal for Combatting Terrorism • 1979 Police Star for Faithful Service • 1980 Bar Police Medal for Combatting Terrorism • 1980 Police Star for Merit Harry was also a keen sport shooter and shot Bisley for the SAP in the small Bore .22 Category. He had a short period of Broken service as can be seen by the fact he had 2 Service Numbers. His original which was 26690 and then 30861 which he had till his service ended and a 7 was added to the number for some or other reason so it became 308617.

- HBH
