Fri, Mar 2, 7:30-9pm. Free. Henrico County Administrative Board Room. 4301 East Parham Road

Join Jocelyn Lohse and husband, Scott Ross on a journey exploring the world of climbing trees as a little known recreational activity. Sure, we’ve all probably climbed around on the branches of a magnolia or even had a tree house when we were young, but with proper training and techniques even the tallest trees can become giant natural jungle gyms! From the early days of recreational tree climbing to tree climbing world championships and tree top camping, we hope you’ll come away viewing these giants among us as an opportunity for adventure and a resource worth protecting.

Marshall’s Voyage

Fri, Mar 16, 7:30-9pm. Free. Henrico County Administrative Board Room. 4301 East Parham Road

In 1812, Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall led an expedition to find a practical river and canal route connecting Richmond to the Ohio River Valley. His work led to the creation of the James River and Kanawha Canal. Two hundred years later, Andrew Shaw and his crew poled the Mary Marshall batteau upstream for 225 miles on the James and Jackson Rivers. They then descended 130 miles on the Greenbrier and New Rivers, retracing John Marshall’s voyage. Join us as Shaw discusses Marshall’s Journey and its implications for infrastructure development in the Commonwealth, and reflects on his own adventure following in Marshall’s footsteps.

RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN’S

Oklahoma! May 4-20

A musical comedy with music by Richard Rodgers, and book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. Directed by Amy Perdue. Rodgers and Hammerstein’s first collaboration is set in a Western Indian territory just after the turn of the century. The high-spirited rivalry between the local farmers and cowboys provides the colorful background against which Curly, a handsome cowboy, and Laurey, a winsome farm girl, play out their love story. Featuring such well known songs as Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’, People Will Say We’re in Love, The Surrey With the Fringe on Top, and I Cain’t Say No. “A masterpiece of musical theatre.” – London Daily Telegraph

The Senator’s Wife Jul 13-29

A romantic comedy with music by C. Robert Jones. Directed by Amber dePass. When Louise Larraby, the charming widow of Democratic Senator Ted Larraby, agrees to marry Republican Senator Richard Townsend, the worlds of both families are turned upside down. And then Louise is asked by the governor to fill the remainder of her late husband’s Senate term. The Senate is split 50-50 and if Louise switches parties – as Richard expects her to do – the GOP will have a majority in the Senate. What will she do? The comedic twists are full of fun, songs, and the ever-present cupid!

• Henrico Library celebrates Black History Month in February with a wide array of events—from screenings of biographical and documentary films, to engaging lectures from the Valentine Museum, a University of Richmond professor, and the director of Richmond's Black History Museum. We're especially excited to welcome nationally renowned artist, activist, and historian Free Egunfemi of Untold RVA, as she presents five little-known facts of Henrico-specific Black History at Libbie Mill Library. See listings for more. • Starting March 3, Varina Library will host a week to elevate the achievements of women and girls in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). The week begins with a book discussion and screening of Hidden Figures, continues with STEM activities for young people throughout the week, and culminates with a panel discussion of women working in STEM careers—their paths, and the obstacles they've overcome. • On April 11 we welcome Reyna Grande, author of our 2018 All Henrico Reads featured selection, The Distance Between Us. Read the book and join us for discussions—either at your library, or at the author event. See back cover.

Book discussions and/or readings. Movie showings. Evening and weekend programs for children and families, convenient for those busy on weekdays. Weekly storytimes. Listen to stories, sing, and dance while helping your child acquire the skills they need to start school ready to learn. “The Distance Between Us … deserves to be celebrated for its candor and for the courage of the woman who overcame so many obstacles to write it … the Angela's Ashes of the modern Mexican immigrant experience.” — Los Angeles Times “An important piece of America’s immigrant history.” — BookPage author event sponsored by

About this year’s featured title

The Distance Between Us is a memoir of award-winning Mexican-American author and motivational speaker Reyna Grande—an unflinching look at the author’s difficult youth, both before and after she immigrates to the United States. The author recounts her childhood growing up in extreme poverty in Mexico. After her parents leave to pursue opportunities in the US, Reyna and her siblings are left with an abusive family member. When at age nine she enters the US as an undocumented immigrant to join her father, she soon learns that this new life in America—and life with her abusive father—will be far more challenging than she imagined. You can join one of the many book discussions about The Distance Between Us taking place this spring at libraries throughout Henrico. See your library's listings for dates.
