As a small business owner or manager, you may find it difficult to pull away from day to day operations to formally train new hires or provide ongoing development for your existing employees. Yet, a well-trained team is key to your business’ success. If you want to develop a world-class team in 2016, it’s important that you think beyond the printed manual, bulleted Word documents- or worsejust putting people in roles to be baptized by fire and learn as they go. New hires need to be properly prepared for the roles you need them to fulfill. Veteran team members need to be sharpened and challenged in order to keep them motivated and committed to contributing value in the workplace. So what’s the solution? You don’t have to stop the presses or close the business for everyone to go off to high-priced conferences or seminars. Nor do you have to bring in an overpriced team of consultants from a Big 5 firm to create a training program for you. One solution is literally at your fingertips: Go digital. Have the veterans on your team get involved by documenting their own role, responsibilities, tasks and processes. The person in a specific role has the most insight on the tasks involved and how they should be done. You can capture this type of “tribal knowledge” by turning your employees
into digital scribes and storytellers. The documentary, “Searching for Sugar Man”, was partially shot with an iPhone and won an Oscar at the 85th Academy Awards in 2013. Certainly, the audio and video apps on smartphones and tablets can help you tell the corporate, operational, and cultural stories that you need to share with your team… quickly and inexpensively. Your team can generate content like interviews, how-to features, and management tips. Once the audio or video content is captured, it can be edited (or used raw) for podcasts and videocasts. Platforms like Audacity and SoundCloud are great for hosting your audio content. You can also turn YouTube or Vimeo into online training centers for your company. Just make the video settings private and manage links to the content internally. It is said that people remember 10% of what they hear, 30% of what they read, and 80% of what they see, so take the steps to upgrade your training and development program for the digital age. The payoffs will make it worth the effort. To learn more about how you can develop your organization, contact The Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at morrow@georgiasbdc.org, or call 678-466-5100.

Youth Leadership Henry State Government Day for the Class of 2016 The Youth Leadership Henry Class of 2016 met at the Henry County Chamber of Commerce early on the morning of Wednesday February 24th. They boarded the bus and headed up to the Georgia State Capitol in Atlanta to learn more about what was really happening under the gold dome this legislative session. The class met with members of the Henry delegation, and learned about how these citizen legislators work at the Capitol. Each member of the delegation entertained excellent questions from the class, and the students were able to learn even more from the dialogue with member of delegation. The visit occurred during the week before Crossover Day, so it was a busy and hectic day, however, the members of the legislative delegation each took the time to ensure that their questions and concerns were noted and
addressed. Youth Leadership Henry appreciated Andy Welch, Brian Strickland, Dale Rutledge, David Knight, Rick Jeffares, and Emanuel Jones for their time. The class was grateful to have Secretary of State Brian Kemp join them for a brief recap of what his office does, and what his vision is. He also spent some time fielding questions from the class members and ensuring they
were informed as to his role and how it fits in with the work others do at the Capitol. After lunch at the Sloppy Floyd building’s cafeteria, the class went to visit the Georgia Bureau of Investigation(GBI) Head Quarters. Leadership Henry alumnus Bradley Martin was their host and he was both humorous and informative as he described the role of the GBI and some of its history. This day was a great
example of how Henry County citizens take the time to invest in its future leaders. Special thanks to the members of the delegation for helping the Youth Leadership Henry class gain a deeper understanding of how they work for Henry County at both state and local level. Get engaged with the program and class - “like” the Youth Leadership Henry Facebook page and follow on Twitter @YLHenry.
Leadership Henry holds State Government Day It was an actionpacked day for the February class of Leadership Henry. State Government Day is always a highlight of the program, and this year was no exception. Class members spent the morning in Atlanta at the Coverdell Building across the street from the Capitol and were visited by a number of guests. The Henry delegation including Senator Rick Jeffares and Representatives Brian Strickland, Andy Welch and John Yates spoke to the class about their current
legislation, committee assignments and day to day responsibilities when the legislature is in session. Chuck Spahos, Executive Director of the Prosecuting Attorneys Council, stopped by to discuss some of the issues of importance to his organization and fielded some great questions by class members. Lauren Fralick of Georgia Link also spoke to the class and shared some of the legislation of interest to Georgia businesses. She also shared about her job as a lobbyist and how she works with our elected leaders.
The class was able to grab a quick photo on the stairs of the Capitol and a peek inside the Senate Chamber before heading to the Sloppy Floyd building to meet with State School Superintendent Richard Woods. Superintendent Woods had a very interactive discussion with the group about his goals as superintendent and improvements he would like to see within the education system. After lunch, the class visited the State Road and Tollways Authority for a presentation on the Interstate 75 Reversible Lane project. Attendees
had an opportunity to ask questions about the construction process and how the lanes will operate, and hopefully improve Henry County traffic, when they open in January 2017. The last stop of the day was the Georgia Archives in Morrow. Archive representatives provided a behind the scenes tour of how they preserve, restore and share documents and artifacts. Did you know that Georgia’s copy of the Declaration of Independence is stored here? It was a busy day as always, but one rich
with information about our state government and unique networking opportunities for class members. Special thanks to Danny Stone and Ray Cheek of Snapping Shoals EMC for their help in coordinating the day. The March program
focused on healthcare in Henry County and was hosted by Piedmont Henry Hospital. Want to be a part of the 2016-2017 class of Leadership Henry? Applications will be available soon at www. leadershiphenry.com.

Henry County Day at The Capitol The Henry County Chamber of Commerce, the Henry County Development Authority, government, civic and business leaders, and citizens all made their way to represent Henry County at the state Capitol on Monday February 29th, 2016. Those who attended were able to learn about the legislative process and key pending legislation affecting Henry County Georgia consumers and families. They were also able to meet with Representatives and Senators from the Henry County area who stopped by to give insight on how the state government and legislature impacts Henry County. Delegation members that stopped
by included Senators Rick Jeffares and Emanuel Jones; Representatives Andy Welch, Dale Rutledge, Demetrious Douglas and Brian Strickland. Representative Sandra Scott also visited with the group while awaiting the Governor as well. Labor Commissioner Mark Butler also came by and spoke to the group. It was a great opportunity for those in attendance to network with fellow chamber members and staff, legislators, and other state officials. The Chamber appreciates everyone’s interest in legislative affairs and hope that everyone will continue to follow events at the Capitol and take time to thank the Henry County Legislative Delegation for all they do.

Race Weekend Full of Fun & Photos Race weekend was full of photo ops and even a little love. The Henry County Convention and Visitors Bureau ran a booth at the Atlanta Motor Speedway during the Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500. Visitors could try their hand at unlocking the treasure chest, register for a bag of Henry County made goodies
or even put themselves in the action with green screen photos. Perfect race weather meant the fans turned out in droves and lined up for their chance to stand in Victory Lane, share their photo on social media and earn one of the CVB’s commemorative “Race to Henry” t-shirts. More than 200 people shared
their #Race2Henry photos on social media ensuring their friends and family knew they were in Henry County – Home of Atlanta Motor Speedway. For one lucky couple this trip to the track was extra special. Kay and Coley Lovejoy celebrated part of their honeymoon at Atlanta Motor Speedway, then Atlanta
International Raceway, in March of 1968. Fortyeight years later, give or take a month, they were back celebrating their anniversary after winning Atlanta Motor Speedway’s weekend race package for the Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500. For more on their story visit www. VisitHenryCountyGeorgia. com/blog.

FINANCIAL FOCUS Watch for Changes to the FAFSA If you have a child in college, you’re probably familiar with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which must be completed to help ensure that students don’t miss out on federal and state grants, work-study jobs and loans. But you might not know that some important changes will be coming to the FAFSA during 2016 – and these changes can affect both the process of filing for aid, and, possibly, the amount of aid your child will receive.

Previously, if a school saw it was listed first on the FAFSA, it might have assumed it was the student’s first choice and, as a result, may not have felt the need to be flexible in awarding financial aid. Now, though, without a list of its competitors, a school might be more open to negotiating a more favorable aid package for your child. It’s a good idea to stay current on the changes connected to the FAFSA because it helps determine financial aid eligibility – and financial aid is a key component of your strategy to pay for your child’s (or grandchild’s) education.
