MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

JUNE WOOD

Leonard Moreland President and CEO at Heritage Bank 2016 Chair of Henry County Chamber of Commerce

vale sayonara auf Wiedersehen

au revoir ciao adiós A

s 2016 comes to an end and we prepare for the New Year, I would like to thank everyone at the chamber for their support throughout this year. I have heard our President and CEO, David Gill, often say that the chamber has a staff of 6 and a workforce of hundreds. Of course, he is talking about all of the wonderful members that volunteer for the many projects and events that support the chamber. However the key staff is the heartbeat of the chamber. The professionalism and friendliness that they bring to work every day shines through as if this is their life’s passion, not just a job. I can personally tell you that behind the scenes, these folks make it happen, and what you see is only a small bit of what they do to make our chamber so successful. So Lydia, Laura, Phyllis, Aisha, Gary and of course David take a bow, you are all truly appreciated. Now for our Board of Directors, it has been a pleasure serving as your chair this year. The comradery amongst the group is an awesome feeling. It is so refreshing to spend time with each of you trying to guide

farewell

the business community and citizens of Henry County through this very competitive market place. Every time I called on someone this year to participate or lead an effort, it was constantly met with great enthusiasm and was fulfilled with such outstanding effort. So, thank you for everything you do for this county and region. You are all rock stars in my eyes. To our members, better yet partners, the Henry County Chamber is here to serve you. We all work together to help Henry County grow and prosper, so we can leave a better place for the next generation. Your involvement in all of the events of the chamber and your financial support is building a foundation that will continue to dominate this entire region. There is a reason that Henry County is the jewel of south metro Atlanta, and it is because of its grossly involved business community. Thank you to all of you for your support in 2016. Now to you readers that are not involved with the chamber of commerce. You may be asking yourself, how do I grow my business, or why are others experiencing

more success than me. Well I can tell you from one business person to another; our business thrives in Henry County because of the support of organizations like the Henry County Chamber of Commerce. The chamber is focused on building and maintaining an environment that promotes commerce and provides the support systems needed to help businesses succeed. This world is too tough to try and go it alone. If you are not active in the chamber, you are missing out on a great opportunity to learn, network, and to be a part of a voice of nearly 800 other like-minded individuals. The Henry County Chamber is raising the tide for business and if your boat is floating higher, you may want to find out why. Come and join us, you won’t be sorry. To close I would like to say, I hope you all had a fantastic Thanksgiving and I want to wish you all a very Merry Christmas. Let’s all take this opportunity to give to those in our community with needs from the bounty that the Lord has given us. Take care. Leonard

Leadership Henry learns about Public Safety in October

Learn about the great things that are happening in our community…

HENRY COUNTY, GA – October 19, 2016 – For its staff ’s effort and courage, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) presented the Henry County Fire Department with a Compassionate Fire Department Award on October 4, which was presented to the Board of Commissioners at the October 18 regular meeting.

Thank you to Central Georgia EMC for its generous decision to donate $11,200 in unclaimed capital credits to the Chamber of Commerce.

The Henry County Education Foundation, which is administered by the Chamber, has made two significant contributions to education. The first is a $5,000 donation to the Clayton State University Foundation for scholarships for Henry County residents.

The second is a $1,000 donation to the Henry County School system to support the January Science Fair.

October’s Leadership Henry class program focused on public safety and was action-packed with plenty of demonstrations, tours and hands-on experiences. The Fire Training Academy hosted the first portion of Public Safety and provided the perfect location for learning about the Henry County Police Department, their staff and programs, and their equipment. Class members had the opportunity to see a demonstration by the K-9 Unit, learn about the C.A.G.E. Unit and how they work to diminish gang activity, and learned about some of the tools and resources the department uses to keep the community safe. Next, the Henry County Fire Department staged several of their diverse fleet of trucks around the parking lot so that Leadership Henry participants could see how each of the

units is used to handle fire and emergencies. From the huge ladder truck to the emergency command center, fire department personnel demonstrated how key pieces of equipment are used and the role they play in an emergency situation. The class then traveled to the Henry County 911 Center where they enjoyed a working lunch by Farmhouse Catering, while listening to a presentation by Don Ash and the Henry County Emergency Management staff. Afterward, class members toured the center and learned how emergency calls are received and dispatched. They also learned how the center functions as a command center in the

event of a local or regional emergency. Following the tour, the class had their monthly Energy Bus leadership discussion. The last stop of the day was just a short walk away. Sherriff Keith McBrayer and staff hosted the class at the Henry County Sherriff’s Department. The Sheriff talked with

the class about how the current role of the department, their current inmate population and how they care for the inmates under their supervision. Then, the class toured the jail facility, from the laundry and kitchen facilities to the pods where inmates live and are monitored. Class members had the opportunity to interact with staff and learn more about how the jail operates and the role of various staff members. November’s class focus is on education in Henry County and includes visits to Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy, Locust Grove Middle School, Academy for Advanced Studies and Southern Crescent Technical College. To learn more about Leadership Henry, visit www.leadershiphenry.com.

Youth Leadership Henry learns about the many faces of Public Safety Members of Youth Leadership Henry’s Class of 2017 met at the Henry County Emergency Operations Center early on the chilly morning of Monday November 7. While their classmates were enjoying a day out of school while teachers had a Professional Learning day, their class members were ready to learn about the role of Public Safety in the community. After they were all assembled, the class boarded buses provided by the 4-H and travelled to Fire Station. First, they were welcomed by someone, who explained the structure of the Henry County Fire Department, an overview of what they do, and what it takes to serve in that capacity. He then split the class into groups that received small group sessions with each of the crews of various pieces of equipment. From Ladder trucks, engines, squads, and ambulances we got a good idea of the unique role that each plays in ensuring the safety of our citizens, from the people that really do it. Returning to the 911 Emergency Operations Center, our class had a presentation by Capt. Chuck Simmons from the Henry County

Police Department describing the various duties of the HCPD, and the similarities and differences between them and the Sheriff’s Office. We then went outside for breakout presentations on motorcycle patrols, HEAT, CAGE, and other units of the HCPD. After returning inside the 911 center, they were briefed by Emergency Management Specialist Kevin Johnson on the 4-part role the Emergency Management Agency played, followed by a description of the duties and responsibilities of the 911 operators. After which their class

members were able to go on the floor of the 911-dispatch center and see the equipment being used as it was explained, in real time. Their last stop was the Henry County Sheriff’s Offices. Sheriff McBrayer met them in the auditorium and gave us a description of his role as an elected constitutional officer, some history of the office and facilities in Henry County over the years. He described the duties of the office, and how it has evolved over time. One of the things his office handles is School Resource Officers (SROs) and they were able to hear from one

who transitioned from SRO to a dog handler specifically tasked with the schools. They were treated to a demonstration of his dog, and the amazing focus and dedication that she had when given a task. After the demonstration, we were able to tour the jail and see how the process worked (and were glad they were “just visiting”). If you want to keep up with class events and programs, they would like to encourage you to “like” the Youth Leadership Henry Facebook page and follow them on Twitter @YLHenry.

OCTOBER BUSINESS AFTER HOURS RECAP

The Hamilton State Bank hosted a Halloween themed October Business After Hours on Thursday October 27 and it was quite a treat! The entire lobby was decorated in vintage Halloween style and the staff prepared a delicious and healthful meal of delectable chili to round out the inevitable sweets on this festive day! Sheila Baker, who is known for her decorating skills and attention to detail, went above and beyond for Halloween. Not only was the interior rife with all things

Halloween, but she made sure everyone would be able to trick or treat right at the bank! Attendees had their fill of chocolates, were able to pick their flavor at the popcorn bar, satisfy their sweet tooth at the cupcake station and trick or treat at a station complete with bags and white chocolate Kit Kats! There were plenty of Halloween games with awesome prizes such as Clothespin Drop, Halloween Bingo, and “Guess how Many” where a lucky attendee guessed the closest to how many candy

corn were in the jar and won a Samsung Galaxy Tablet courtesy of Hamilton State Bank! It was a great time for all who attended and was a great way to commemorate the last Chamber After Hours for the year. Thank you to everyone who brought door prizes! • Randy McClellan State Farm • 1Up Recording Studio • United Community Bank Happy Halloween!

CVB Previews New Campaign

Community leaders were given a sneak peek in November at one element of the Henry County Convention and Visitors Bureau’s “History Has a Name” campaign, set to launch in 2017. The audience viewed a series of videos featuring interviews with founders, owners and longtime managers of eight local tourism attractions. The videos encourage viewers to learn more about each person on the CVB’s new website that is currently in development. There, visitors will find a detailed Q & A and photos that will accompany each video.

“We hope this campaign will take visitors beyond what they see or know about a location and will let them see the heart, the people and the story that led to its creation,” said Laura Luker, Director of Tourism for the Henry County Convention and Visitors Bureau. The first phase of the campaign will launch in January of 2017 and will include video, digital advertising, blogs, media and more, with the goal of eventually featuring all Henry County assets. Visit wwwYouTube.com/VisitHenryCOGA to see and share the first eight 15-second video teasers.
