It pays to listen... Cheryl Greenerl, Program Coordinator The University of Georgia Small Business Development Center

Every time my husband and I go to his home town to visit family, we stop at our favorite local restaurant for diner. Although we only get there 1 or 2 times each year, the business owner has taken the effort to remember our names and includes us among his regular customers. The place isn’t very fancy and there are few frills, but we’ve been eating there for the last 10 years because the restaurant is clean, the food is always very good and the service is fast and friendly. Despite the lack frills, there is usually a steady stream of customers who return each week because they can count on the consistent quality and value they’ll receive. But another important reason is

that they also know, trust and like the owner and his employees. The restaurant staff goes out of their way to establish relationships with the customers. They make you feel like you really matter. I noticed that the staff members ask lots of questions; seek the opinion of the customers. They want feedback on the meals and encourage the patrons to make suggestions about how to improve the food and service. There is even and old-fashioned suggestion box at the counter. The best part is that they really listen and have implemented some of the suggestions. They understand an important principal about business. That is: customers like to know that businesses value what

5 they think and is willing to act on good suggestions. As a business owner, you’re not only responsible for providing the best quality goods/services possible but also to help customers to look better, feel better, be entertained, or solve a problem. So, to help them, you must be willing to listen and provide a solution. In today’s competitive market, your product alone may not set you apart. Very often, what’s behind your product will make you stand out and make a name for yourself. It may be the service, follow-up, and assistance you provide to your customers that keeps them coming back. Or it might be something as simple as asking them what they think.

Leadership Henry class participates in Healthcare Day Members of the Leadership Henry class were treated to a full day of presentations, demonstrations and tours as part of Healthcare Day in December. The class kicked off their December program with a visit to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta in Stockbridge. The group learned about the pediatric hospital system’s mission, services, challenges and how they are working to bring more services to the community. Children’s leaders Doug Hatterman, Beth Gansel and Laura Turner (LH08) then led the group on a tour of the Sports Medicine and Urgent Care facilities. The next stop for the class was the campus of Piedmont Henry Hospital. CEO Deborah Armstrong (LH17) welcomed the group and provided an overview of the hospital, its facilities, services and staff while highlighting some of the trends

and challenges in healthcare. Next, the Leadership Henry participants rotated through a number of interactive wellness presentations, demonstrating the wide range of services offered to the community. Following a terrific lunch prepared by the Piedmont food service staff, class members led their colleagues in their final Energy Bus discussion. Their leadership skills to the test with the creative Playdoh assignment! Next, the class toured the Hands Of Hope Clinic on the campus of Piedmont Henry. Led by Executive Director BJ Mathis (LH12), participants learned how the charitable clinic works in partnership with the hospital to assist underinsured and underserved patients address basic health needs and manage chronic illnesses. The class also visited Piedmont’s Radiology Oncology Center, led by Kimberly Stabler.

The facility tours continued with visits to several departments in the hospital. Jennifer Wolfe also presented on the Wound Healing Center at Piedmont and how they help patients with hard to heal wounds. One of the highlights of the day was a visit to the Neonatal Intensive Care unit, led by Kim Pace, where they saw firsthand where they care for their smallest patients. The class also learned about Cardiovascular Services from

Lynn Tobin, including a tour of the Cath Lab. The afternoon class session included several other healthcare providers that play a role in keeping Henry County healthy. Tisa Bright from the Henry County Health Department – and a member of the current Leadership Henry class – shared how her agency works to provide vital health services for the community. Amy Kuhns, Director of the Henry County Counseling Cen-

ter and another current class member, provided information about how the center offers mental health services to local residents. The class also heard from Sharon Henley, Director of the Henry County Developmental Disability Center, who shared how her center assists residents with developmental disabilities with access, employment, housing and more. Andrea Mendez

concluded the day’s sessions with information on the Piedmont Foundation, followed by closing comments from Donna Braddy (LH99), Director of Community Relations for Piedmont Henry Hospital. The January program focuses on Henry County government and will include visits with local leaders and tours of county offices and the courthouse.

but we also engaged and energized this group of young people to tell their friends, parents, classmates, church

members etc about the work that Hands Of Hope can do for those in financial need requiring medical attention.

Youth Leadership Henry applies what they learn The Youth Leadership Henry program seeks to instill the qualities of servant leadership in each year’s class of Henry County high school sophomores. We select our class of Henry County residents from a pool that includes all schools; public, private, virtual and home-school. The common thread in our class participants and an expressed desire to actively work to make Henry County a better place to live, work, and play. To that end, we have been making our class members aware of opportunities to serve the community in ways they

may not otherwise be aware of – Saturday January 13 was one of those opportunities. The Executive Director of the Hands of Hope medical clinic in Stockbridge, B.J. Mathis, wanted to ensure that her clients felt that they were being seen in a real medical clinic, a place that would build their sense of dignity, not tear it down. She wanted the institutional, hand-me-down look and feel to be replaced by a warm and welcoming facility. Reaching out to the Henry County Fuller Center for Housing (HCFC) for assistance, they were able to get two teams of high school

students (our Youth Leadership Henry group and a team from EXCEL Academy) to work under HCFC supervision, to relocate donated cabinets and repaint the entire facility. Our class participants didn’t just paint; they learned about the vital role that Hands Of Hope has in this community. Founded by Janet Turner when she realized that the folks she helped with her food ministry also needed medical attention, it has grown to a clinic operated on the campus of Piedmont Henry Hospital with regular operating hours that sees

folks that are unable to afford medical and dental care. Rather than go to the Emergency Room (the most costly care to deliver) for non-emergency care, Hands Of Hope allows the indigent and less fortunate an opportunity to receive quality medical care. The wait time is minimal at the clinic, and every person they see is one less tying up precious resources at the ER. We had a lot of fun and fellowship on the project,

One Henry Arts and Leisure Committee FuninHenry.com Soft Launch The one-year anniversary of the One Henry Arts and Leisure Committee kicked off with a sneak peek of the new website. On Thursday, January 11, 2018 from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. the Arts and Leisure Committee held a Meet and Greet at the Courtyard Marriott (115 Mill Rd. McDonough, GA) to celebrate one year of being committed to establishing Henry County as a major arts destination. Though currently in the beta testing phase, attendees got a sneak peek at the upcoming “Fun in Henry” website, learned about the Arts and Leisure committee and networked with the community while enjoying Happy Hour at the Courtyard Marriott! Leading the effort is Aisha White who serves as the Media & Technology Group Lead for the One Henry Arts & Leisure Committee. The group is responsible for creating an engaging web presence to help promote the Arts in the community as well as the committee and its efforts. “We want to see the Arts and Leisure website serve as a resource where locals and those from surrounding areas can stay up-to-date on entertainment throughout Henry County.” When it comes to being a part of the Arts & Leisure Committee and taking on a leadership role,

Ms. White has really brought a lot to the table. “I am glad to be able to contribute my digital marketing skills to the role of Digital Media/ Technology Lead in order to play an active part in the continual growth of Henry County and to see its arts culture flourish.” But she is not doing this alone. Her group is made of a diverse group of experts in the field of media, technology, photography and marketing, who have all come together to bring this website to fruition. They are also small business owners and entrepreneurs in

Henry County who believe that having a platform where residents can have one simple location as resource to find things to do in Henry County is a great need and would serve as a huge benefit to the community. The company building the website along with Aisha and her team is WebMobileFusion. The Digital Media/Technology Group will be at the forefront of this process and will be maintaining the new website and providing the community with up to date information about the committee, projects, news and events related to arts & leisure. They are asking all business owners and entrepreneurs in the Arts, Leisure and Entertainment

community to add their listing and events to the site and help test the site and explore its features. To meet those that are involved and learn more about the Arts & Leisure Committee, check the committee page on FuninHenry.com, to find

upcoming events where you can meet the team, and get involved. We are always looking for individuals who believe in our mission and are willing to serve and be active in their roles.
