Our Chamber…

At the Chamber, the month of February is a month of recognitions.

We kick off the month with our annual Chamber banquet. This year’s banquet will be held on February 9th at Eagles Landing County Club.

This is an event that I look forward to each year as it gives the Chamber the opportunity to acknowledge deserving people in the community.

During this banquet the Chamber presents awards in four different categories - Citizen of the Year, Public Service Award, Business of the Year and Volunteer of the Year. I enjoy these awards because in business it is so easy to get immersed in the whirlwinds of the day-to-day operations. These awards recognize people who, despite these whirlwinds, they still go above and beyond. I am privileged to work for a company, Bennett International Group, that was awarded one of the first awards in the “Industry of the Year” category. This award has since been renamed “Business of the Year.” In addition to the aforementioned awards, the annual banquet also gives the Chamber a platform to reflect on our accomplishments of the past year as well as set the tone for the current year.

will be held on February 15, where we will have the honor of recognizing some of the best and brightest in Henry County. Our annual Student Teacher Achievement Recognition, or STAR Breakfast, will also be held at Eagles Landing Country Club. During this event students who have achieved the accomplishment of scoring the highest SAT score at their respective schools is named their STAR student. Along with the students being acknowledged, each student is asked to name a star teacher that has been a major influence in their scholastic career.

Thanks to the generous donations of sponsors from the Chamber busi-

ness community the STAR students, their selected STAR teacher, members of their family and representatives from their schools have the opportunity to witness the students being presented with a certificate and a financial gift to assist with the next phase of their educational path.

One of the most memorable parts of the STAR Breakfast is the video that each student is asked to record.

During this video they are asked to respond to a set of predetermined questions. One question that is always asked is “What would encourage you to return to Henry County after College?”. Although this may seem to be a rather simplistic ques-

tion, the Chamber has used the feedback from the student’s responses to spark many initiatives. For example, based on the feedback from these videos, the need and creation for a website that lists all of the “fun” activities taking place in Henry County was identified. It also sparked the creation of a committee under the One Henry Economic Alliance designed to create Jobs in Henry County for Henry County residents.

So although the month of February is the shortest month of the year it is packed with planning and execution of major events. None of this would be possible without the hard work of the dedicated staff at the Chamber. I am truly amazed at the amount of work they are able to get accomplished with the level of excellence they are able to maintain.

So as I officially take the gavel of Chairperson of the Chamber -- with the business community that continues to go above and beyond, with the best and brightest in our education system and with the exemplary staff at the Chamber… I can’t wait to forge through the remainder of the year as the Chamber continues ..Expanding our Possibilities.

The Stockbridge venue is the original of the three Pin Strikes locations and has been a member of the Henry County Chamber of Commerce since 2006. The management team, consisting of General Manager Tim Mullen and Director of Marketing Adrian Jones, are frequent attendees of Chamber events and annually host a Business After Hours networking event.

Their next BAH is on schedule for Thursday, February 28. “Our Chamber membership has been a great investment. They have supported Pin Strikes by helping us reach out to potential customers,” said Adrian Jones.

Lessons of Leadership Are you a good or bad leader? Have you ever struggled with a boss who yells and blames others for poor results?

Many employers struggle with understanding, retaining, motivating and leading employees. Leadership is influence and the ability to guide others while investing in their careers. As a business consultant and professor, I work with successful and struggling companies.

Without a doubt, the successful organizations invest in leadership development and care about their employees. With the current labor market being so competitive, companies must focus on respecting and developing their work force. Employees quit bad managers not companies.

This article will examine the characteristics of leaders both good and bad.

Great leaders focus on influence. Influence is the ability to lead by example. The leader/influencer has a positive connection with the employee. Employees want to be understood and appreciated.

Successful leaders have vision, maximize opportunity, and invest in people. Leaders are active listeners too. The rule of active listening supports the 80/20 rule. Leaders spend 80 percent of their time listening and 20 percent speaking. Great listeners are effective managers. They listen for problems, continuing improvement opportunities and evaluate moral through conversations. Leadership is

not possible without being a servant. It is a leader’s job to make sure employees have resources to succeed through servanthood. There is a misunderstanding that leaders are born. This is simply not true.

Leadership is taught to those who want to make a difference while investing in others.

On the flip side, bad leaders exist all too often. Bad leaders are self- serving, egotistical managers. They pass the buck and do not accept full ownership. Many ineffective managers only focus on their needs and not the overall picture. A bad manager uses their power to antagonize their employees. When focusing on one’s self, team development is not a priority.

Objectives are rarely met through selfcentered goals. Intimidating employees is a practice many supervisors feel necessary to climb the corporate ladder.

There is a positive relationship between successful employees and competent leaders. Employees cannot be led through intimidation and lack of trust.

In closing, it is imperative to know leadership is a journey and not a destination. Where are you on this journey?

Leadership Henry Class Participates in Healthcare Day STUDENT TEACHER ACHIEVEMENT RECOGNITION BREAKFAST

Members of the Leadership Henry class were treated to a full day of presentations, demonstrations, and tours as part of Healthcare Day in December.

The class kicked off their December program with a visit to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta in Stockbridge.

The group learned about the pediatric hospital system’s mission, services, challenges, and how they are working to bring more services to the community. Children’s leaders Doug Hatterman, Beth Gansel, and Laura Turner (LH08) then led the group on a tour of the Sports Medicine and Urgent Care facilities.

The next stop for the class was the campus of Piedmont Henry Hospital.

CEO Deborah Armstrong (LH17) welcomed the group and provided an overview of the hospital, its facilities, services, and staff while highlighting some of the trends and challenges in healthcare. Next, the Leadership Henry participants rotated through a number of interactive wellness presentations, demonstrating the wide range of services offered to the community.

Following a terrific lunch prepared by the Piedmont food service staff, class members led their colleagues in their final Energy Bus discussion. Their leadership skills to the test with the creative Playdoh assignment!

Next, the class toured the Hands of Hope Clinic on the campus of Piedmont Henry, led by Executive Director BJ Mathis (LH12). Participants learned how the charitable clinic works in partnership with the hospital to assist underinsured and underserved patients address basic health needs and manage chronic illnesses.

The class also visited Piedmont’s Radiology Oncology Center, led by Kimberly Stabler.

The facility tours continued with visits to several of departments in the hospital. Jennifer Wolfe also presented on the Wound Healing Center at Piedmont and how they help patient with hard to heal wounds. One of the highlights of the day was a visit to the Neonatal Intensive Care unit, led by Kim Pace, where they saw firsthand where they care for their smallest patients.

The class also learned about Cardiovascular Services from Lynn Tobin, including a tour of the Cath Lab. The afternoon class session included several other healthcare pro-

viders that play a role in keeping Henry County healthy. Tisa Bright from the Henry County Health Department shared how her agency works to provide vital health services for the community. Amy Kuhns, Director of the Henry County Counseling Center, provided information about how the center offers mental health services to local residents.

The class also heard from Sharon Henley, Director of the Henry County Developmental Disability Center, who shared how her center assists residents with developmental disabilities with access, employment, housing, and more. Andrea Mendez concluded the day’s sessions with information on the Piedmont Foundation, followed by closing comments from Donna Braddy (LH99), Director of Community Relations for Piedmont Henry Hospital.

On Saturday, January 19th, the Youth Leadership Henry Class of 2019 visited the Piedmont Henry Hospital in Stockbridge. Averaging over 96,000 patients through their Emergency Room doors alone last year, the hospital has offered tremendous aid to our community and its surrounding counties. The class learned about the many professionals it takes ­— including specialists, technicians, scientists and engineers — in addition to the doctors and nurses, to support the community through a hospital like Piedmont Henry.

The class enjoyed hearing from Mrs. BJ Mathis with the Hands of Hope Clinic and the many ways their services help those in need. They also heard from Mrs. Laura Turner with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta about how easily germs spread and the mountainous amount of sugar

It was a tremendous treat to be toured around the hospital so that the students could get a first-hand look at all the possibilities in working in Healthcare. The class was able to see the new Thomas F. Chapman Family Cancer Wellness center inside the Education Building which features free health, nutrition and therapy classes for those who have beat cancer or those still battling through

the disease. The class visited the Pathology lab and viewed specimens, both healthy and diseased. The passionate doctors in the Radiology Department educated our students on the many forms of scans conducted at the hospital. Our students were also able to hear from many nurses throughout the hospital, what they specialize in, and how a career in Healthcare can be so rewarding.
