MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

JUNE WOOD

Sharon Ponder Vice President of Finance at the Bennett International Group 2019 Chair of Henry County Chamber of Commerce

Our Chamber… May signals the end of the school year and the start of planning for summer vacations, family reunions and gatherings with friends. It’s at this time when the question often arises “What is there to do here?” Despite being a lifelong resident I continue to learn about new opportunities for fun in Henry County. In addition to a family beach trip, consider opting for local weekend excursions and activities with your family as well. You will save not only on travel expenses, but you will find that Henry County offers hours of entertainment without a big price tag. For adventure seekers, sign-up for a tree top excursion at Panola Mountain where, from the safety of a harness, you can climb to the top limbs of a magnificent old oak to enjoy a bird’s eye view. Adventurers of all ages can enjoy geocaching, a real-world scavenger hunt that uses portable GPS devices to find hidden “caches.” Henry County Parks and Recreation, the Henry County Convention and Visitors Bureau and the City of Stockbridge all have caches hidden around Henry County. Atlanta Motor Speedway offers behind-the-scene track tours yearround which include two chauffeured laps around the track perfect for all ages. If your need for speed requires you to be in the driver’s seat, a variety of driv-

Expanding the Possibilities.

ing/racing experiences are offered at the Speedway, including the chance to drive a NASCAR race car or some exotic luxury cars. There is something nostalgic about wandering the rows of berry vines and bushes or through an old peach orchard picking fruit. In Henry County we are lucky to have multiple locations for just such an experience. At Southern Belle Farm you can start picking strawberries in April then blackberries and blueberries as we move into summer. Yule Forest opens in June for blueberry picking. These great places offer not only a delicious reward but a fun family outing that can’t be found in a big city or a beach town. Take advantage of additional op-

portunities to enjoy the tastes of summer by shopping for fresh, local produce at the farmer’s markets hosted in the cities of Hampton and Locust Grove, at the Jason T. Harper Event Center and at the Downtown McDonough Farmer’s Market. Just because school is out doesn’t mean the opportunities for learning end. Henry County offers two free history museums. You don’t have to be a history buff to be drawn in by the stories told by the veterans who run the historic Veterans Museum at Heritage Park. While you wander through the impressive collection of uniforms, military memorabilia and rare vehicles, don’t miss the stories on display of the soldiers who wore the uniforms.

The whole family can enjoy an evening (or an afternoon) at Pin Strikes bowling, playing laser tag, bumper cars or…balladium. Never heard of balladium? If you grew-up engaging in Nerf wars, then you have the idea. Need an evening out with the guys? Did you know that in addition to great bowling and arcades Fun Bowl has one of the largest and most upscale billiards parlors on the Southside? Or how about a tour of one of Georgia’s few micro-breweries? JailHouse Brewing Company offers tours and tastings every Saturday. Once you have swallowed the last sample, the tasting glass is yours to keep! If you just need a place for the kids to release some energy, Henry County offers more than 1,200 acres of parks with disk golf courses, playgrounds and walking trails. In addition to Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary’s acres of animal habitats that are free to visit and their picnic pavilions, Noah’s Ark also offers unique overnight Adventure Safari Camps that let families get up close and personal with some of the residents. If you have gotten some good ideas and want to learn more, visit www.visithenrycountygeorgia.com. Be sure to check out the events calendar too for special events happening all over the county.

(McDonough, Georgia) The Henry County Chamber of Commerce has named Joseph Henning the new president and chief executive officer of the business organization. He currently serves as president and chief executive officer of the Aurora Regional Chamber of Commerce in Aurora, Illinois, a position he has held since 2005. Current chamber president and chief executive officer David Gill, who has led the organization since 2012, announced his retirement several months ago and will be working with Henning through the transition process. “Joe’s expertise and understanding of the important role a chamber plays in the growth and development of a community in terms of leadership, infrastructure and creating an inclusive, pro-business environment are the key reasons the search committee identified him as the right leader for Henry County,” according to Sharon Ponder, 2019 chair of the chamber and vice president of finance for Bennett International Group. “The chamber has a solid foundation that David, the internal team, and our membership have established over the years. The search committee and the board of directors are committed to continuing the long tradition of a strong business-focused organization.” Henning served as chair of the National Board of Trustees for the US Chamber Institute for Organization Management in 2016-17 and continues as an instructor for classes throughout the country. The Institute is renowned as the leading training program for chamber executives. He is also recognized as the catalyst behind the Aurora Regional Chamber achieving the highest award in the industry with a five-star accreditation distinction by the US Chamber of Commerce Foundation in 2012 and re-affirmed in 2017. “The Henry County Chamber position is a great opportunity for me to put my skillsets to work in a very fast-paced, growing area,” says Henning. “Georgia is known for its progressive business climate and I look forward to working with the leaders in Henry County, the region and state to build an even stronger chamber. I believe my experiences in Aurora, which is a suburb of Chicago, will match the needs well in Henry County. I look forward to becoming a part of the leadership team in the community.”

About Summit Racing Equipment

Enter the Summit Racing Equipment store in McDonough and you’ve stepped into the world of motor sports, a multi-billion-dollar industry in the US that consists largely of owners and athletes whose athletic abilities are based singularly on how fast their car can go. Some professionals and many hobbyists and enthusiasts account for a large share of the traffic on any given day at Summit – folks who buy, trade, swap, repair, restore and race motor vehicles, to earn bragging rights as much or more than cash winnings. The sport in its many forms is the driving force behind the thriving market at Summit – a constant flow of people coming in to buy parts that will keep their engines humming and chassis’ looking like new. “We sell fun,” says Steve Kester, Retail Store Manager for Summit, referring to his customer’s passion for the bevy of priceless classics and supercar showcases, expo’s, cruise events, and spectator entertainment scheduled weekly at Summit throughout the year. The variety of amusement draws hundreds of owners, enthusiasts, and spectators alike. The Summit held its most popular event of the year in April featuring their ongoing partnership with the Atlanta Motor Speedway, the Annual Summit Racing Equipment Atlanta Motorama. They will be showcasing the AMS Pace Car at a one of their Friday night drag racing events, May – August, and their Monday night cruise events which run through October. Steve is a collector of eight restored automobiles including a1968 green Lemans purchased new for his mom from Altanta’s old Boomershine Pontiac. “I love the sport too,” Steve understates. Motivating Multiple Generations By Doug McElhaney Business Consultant ages. I continue to survey them to stay in tune with their needs. If you want to retain, recruit and motivate the current work force, especially the younger workers, you must consider these current perks. The first perk is flextime. Many employees enjoy coming and going as needed. As long as expectations are met and projects completed, several companies are giving more flexibility to employees. Some large tech companies give their employees flextime and allow a four-day work week. This a great recruiting and retention tool. The second perk is advancement. Employees want opportunities for

advancement while being challenged with other tasks. Many enjoy instant gratification while solving complex problems. The last perk will be the ability to socialize. Even though the main current media of communication is texting; most employees enjoy meeting and interacting with others. In summary, the way we motivate others has not changed, but the needs

have. Every generation’s needs change due to technology, culture and values. So, consider these perks when recruiting and training employees. Lastly, never forget the Golden Rule; Do unto others as you would have them do unto you,”. All generations expect common decencies. For additional assistance, feel free to contact UGA Small Business Development Center at Clayton State University.

As a business consultant, I am constantly asked how to motivate employees. With every generation having unique characteristics, there are still areas of commonality. Therefore, there is hope. In order to motivate any generation, the main objective is to meet their needs. Anyone can be motivated once their needs are met and considered. So, there is one expected similarity between baby boomers, Generation X and millennials. The most common similarity is money. However, money as a motivator, may or may not rank as number one. I have spent hours in classrooms educating college students of all

On Saturday, April 13th, the Youth Leadership Henry Class of 2019 was treated to a personal tour of the county by our very own Henry County Historian, Gene Morris. It is wildly fascinating to see the County through the eyes of history, learning the how’s and why’s of where the County is today, literally and figuratively. From the bottomless well of knowledge that Mr. Morris imparted on our students during the tour the class was especially interested in how the names of their school’s came to be. After the tour the class discussed their personal lineage and explored how their relatives each impacted the world we live in today. In the afternoon the students visited the Army Aviation Heritage Foundation located in Hampton. The students had a wild ride in the Huey Helicopter with open doors and spectacular views of Henry County!

Youth Leadership Class of 2019 Community Project Helps A Friend’s House Currently in Henry County, transitional residential space for foster youth from the ages of 17.5 to 21 years old is not available. Through partnering with A Friend’s House, the Leadership Henry Class of 2019 is helping to fill this need by transforming two rooms within AFH into Independent Living areas. Largely completed, the scope of work to transform the selected area in A Friend’s House into a two room Independent Living Space included: INTERIOR: • Replace Cabinets • Add New Sink & Dishwasher • Install Plank Flooring • Remove Doors / Add Wall EXTERIOR: • Add New Exterior Door & Window FINAL TOUCHES: • Furnish & Decorate Space Work was conducted by an ADA certified General Contractor Licensed in the State of Georgia The LH Class of 2019 adopted the project to assist A Friend’s House after becoming aware of the dire statistics concerning the future of youth aging out of foster care without a transitional program: 30% become incarcerated, only 5% attend college and 35% become homeless. The Class of 2019 set a goal of raising $30,000 to cover the costs of the project. A Friend’s House, Inc. is a shelter for children in crisis located in Henry County, Georgia, primarily serving children ages 12-18. In 1995, a group of Henry County citizens decided to take a stand for abused, neglected and abandoned children. The result was A Friend’s House. Since opening in 1998, over 2,053 children have been served. The shelter has

I recently sat in an emergency room waiting area with an ailing loved one. I was surprised to see the waiting area clogged with so many patients acting erratically. It seemed as if they were waiting for their next fix. This got me to thinking about drugs and how they impact not only our healthcare providers, but also our workplaces and our REGISTER NOW TO ATTEND AT families. What changes should you and I expect to see in an employee struggling with addiction? How can we protect our www.henrycounty.com/events loved ones? Ourselves? Like me, you may ask yourself these same kinds of questions. Lunch will be catered by: The opioid epidemic refers to the growing Farm House 1658 Turner Church Rd. struggle with addiction of opioid painkillers, McDonough, GA 30252 as well as illegal opioid drugs such as heroin. – Dodie Cason (770) 954-3585 (work)

MARCH

BUSINESS BOOSTER LUNCHEON RECAP By Dodie Cason, Chair, Small Business Council and AVP, Heritage Bank 42,000, the number of students that attend the Henry County School system each day. 50, the number of schools in Henry County. 5000, the number of employees it takes to educate, feed and support the students of Henry County. Wow, those numbers are staggering! Thank you to Mary Elizabeth Davis, the Henry County School Superintendent, for her enlightening commentary on our school system. Student performance is always a concern and Superintendent Davis shared that, although our students are not quite where we want them to be, we are seeing positive increases with the student’s performance and test scores. A budget of any size can be a challenge. Even with the school system seeing increased funds added to the budget; budget challenges have arisen because of extra expenditures. These expenses mostly include employee benefits and employee insurance costs. Our children’s safety should always come first, and I was happy to hear that a Response Readiness Team is always on alert and prepared for any emergency at each school location. The School Board is also looking to bring new security technology that would allow an entire school to be placed on “lockdown” from any location in the school, by any employee, at the single touch of a button. Mary Elizabeth Davis’s passion and dedication are contagious! We can sleep better knowing our youth and future leaders are in her care. Thank you to Affordable Events for catering the wonderful lunch! We appreciate our BBL sponsors. A huge thank you to Central Georgia EMC for sponsoring this event.
