YOUR BUSINESS IS OUR BUSINESS
T
he Henry County Chamber of Commerce, the Henry County Development Authority, government, civic and business leaders, and citizens made Henry County presence at the state Capitol on Tuesday, March 13th, 2018. Henry County provided the transportation for the day. The county was well represented by Chamber staff members, business owners, city and county elected officials, county staff members, McDonough Youth Advisory Council and Excel Academy Key Club. A total of over 45 attendees. While at the Capital, the group heard from Representatives Sandra Scott, Geoff Cauble, Andy Welch and Dale
Rutledge, Senator Brian Strickland and Labor Commissioner Mark Butler. The elected officials provided updates on bills in either Senate or House committees and answered questions. Commissioner Mark Butler informed the group with labor landscape and employee growth in Georgia. The attendees were able to talk with the state officials one on one after their presentations due to this being a non-legislative day. The participation from Henry County was well received by the state elected officials. The Henry County Chamber hosts the Day at the Capital event annually during the regular legislative session.

Important Reasons to Offer Employee Benefits As a small business owner, you know that two keys to growth and profitability are reducing expenses and maximizing sales. However, offering employee benefits can also play a vital role in growing your business. Here are some important reasons to offer a benefits package. • Increase Your Appeal – Attract Top Talent In a highly competitive job market, offering benefits will help to attract skilled and dedicated workers. Your benefits package may be the deciding factor when a candidate considers working for your competitor. So to bring these individuals on board, it helps to offer the best benefits package that you can afford. Offering perks like paid vacation and holidays, health insurance and a retirement

plan shows that you believe in your company’s stability enough to invest in your employees. Reduce Turnover – Retain Employees When employees are constantly coming and going, it’s difficult for a business to make progress. It’s painful and expensive to lose a talented employee to a company that offers better salary or benefits. Employees who have good benefits, especially a retirement plan are less likely to leave. Better Moral – Improved Satisfaction Satisfied employees are critical to business success. By offering benefits, it shows that you care about your workers which may increase loyalty,

productivity and the quality of their output. • Healthier Workers When employees are healthy, they take fewer sick days. Employees who have access to health/dental plans are more likely to schedule regular checkups and seek treatment for illnesses. When they have access to sick leave, workers who are sick and may be contagious, won’t infect their co-workers. The end result is a healthier workforce and fewer out-of-office days. While offering a benefits package may cost more at first, you’ll attract the best employees who will contribute to your overall success. She has been a faithful Chamber Ambassador for over 25 years, and a previous winner of the Chamber’s Volunteer of the Year Award. Thanks for all you do Bobbie! Youth Leadership Henry learns about our Water Authority Members of the Youth Leadership Henry Class of 2018 met at the Henry County Water Authority the morning of Saturday, March 10, 2018. We were welcomed by an alumna of the Youth Leadership Henry Class of 1997, Mrs. Tara Brown, who now serves as the Environmental Compliance Coordinator for the Water Authority! Mrs. Brown had a presentation for us on the history of the Water Authority, its important role in our community, and some interesting facts that most of us were totally unaware of (none of the class members will ever idly watch someone rinse grease down a drain now!). Learning about point source and nonpoint source pollution near the end of the presentation was a great segue to the explanation of the rationale for our service
project later in the day, helping clean up pollutants at the Gardner reservoir. We boarded our bus and headed to the Towaliga Water Treatment Plant for the next phase of our day. Upon arriving at the plant, we divided into two groups so that one group could tour the plant itself, while the other went to the lab and then switched. We were able to see the process of how water goes through
Leadership Henry holds State Government Day State Government Day is always a highlight of the Leadership Henry program, and this year was no exception. Class members spent the morning in downtown Atlanta at the Coverdell Building across the street from the Capitol and were visited by a number of guests. Several members of the Henry County state delegation stopped by to talk about legislation and issues they are working on this legislative session on behalf of their constituents. The class met with Senator Emmanuel Jones, Senator Brian
Strickland, Representative Andy Welch, Representative Demetrius Douglas and Representative Geoff Cauble throughout the morning. Secretary of State Brian Kemp also visited with the class and shared about the role of his office. The class made the quick walk over to the State Capitol where they met with more members of the Henry County delegation before taking a photo on the stairs with Governor Nathan Deal. Class members also had the opportunity to tour the Capitol, observe the House and
Senate Chambers in session and were recognized from the Senate floor by Senator Brian Strickland. Next, Leadership Henry made their way to the Sloppy Floyd building for lunch then met with several leaders from the Georgia Department of Agriculture. One out of six jobs in Georgia is agriculture related, and class members learned about everything from poultry to pecans to bee keeping. It was a busy day as always, but one rich with information about our state government and unique net-
working opportunities for class members. The March Leadership Henry program will focus on Economic Development and Tourism in Henry County. Want to be a part of the 2018-2019 class of Leadership Henry? Applications will be available soon at www.leadershiphenry.com.
the plant and also see the various tests and controls in place to ensure production of the highest quality drinking water for our community. Many of our class members are taking Chemistry this year, and really enjoyed seeing these real-world applications of what they are learning in class. It was a really nice day, so we had lunch outside where we could break
into groups and talk and make new friends with other class members. We did a group photo after our lunch (while we were still clean!) in front of the water tower, then took the bus down to Gardner Reservoir for our cleanup project. People throw trash out of their cars onto the roadway, where it is blown by the wind into the reservoir. The prevailing winds bring this nonpoint source pollution to consistent areas at the reservoir, so we knew just where to go to most efficiently effect the cleanup. We took boats across the reservoir and in only a couple hours were able to make a huge positive impact. The class seemed to enjoy working together to help out, and the excellent weather made for a great afternoon together.

5 Reasons to Attend Taste of Henry April 20, 2018 | 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM
W
e all know the best part about any event or festival is always the food. Taste of Henry gives the food center stage showcasing the best of Henry County’s food scene. In case the lure of more than 20 different restaurants under one roof is not enough, here are five more reasons Taste of Henry needs to be on your “must do” list.
1. What’s for dinner?
The most dreaded question in the English language – maybe the most dreaded question in any language. For just $20 adults (ages 13-64) can enjoy unlimited samples from the more than 20 different restaurants. If your kiddos are between 3-12 they eat for just $5! No cooking, no cleaning and no worries about picky eaters because there is something for every taste.
2. It’s not just dinner, it’s a full evening of entertainment. With live
music, kids activities, a photo booth, prizes and more, you will get more than just a meal. Everyone will leave full, happy, and in the kids case, hopefully exhausted.
3. Find a new favorite dinner spot. Taste of Henry
takes the risk out of trying new restaurants. Since the wristband is good for all you can eat, there is no risk to trying unfamiliar restaurants. You never
know. You might just find your new favorite place to eat!
4. Every wristband purchased helps support children in crisis. Taste of Henry is the main
fundraiser for A Friend’s House, a nonprofit that provides a home for abused, neglected, and abandoned children. The facility operates as both temporary and long-term placement for children in crisis.
5. Everybody loves a clean plate…and winning prizes. Pick up a
“plate” from either the ticket window or the Henry County Convention and Visitors Bureau booth and start “cleaning” it. Visit all the booths whose logo is on the plate and have them stamp the plate. After the entire plate has been “cleaned” (stamped) turn it in for chances at prizes. To learn more about Taste of Henry or to purchase tickets online visit www. TasteofHenry.org. For the last five years the Henry County Convention and Visitors Bureau and A Friend’s House have partnered to bring attendees not only the best “tastes” but also to provide a chance to learn more about Henry County’s tourism attractions.
