E Comfortably South of Atlanta The Henry County Chamber of Commerce serves as the voice for the business community, provides quality services and programs that meet the needs of its members, improves the economic environment of the community and creates a legacy of leadership for the future.
We also offer our Board Room and our smaller conference room, the Toppan Room free to members. They make a great location to meet clients, hold training sessions, conduct interviews or just a meeting space for your business. The Chamber has free wi-fi available as well. Remember our facility is for our members to use.
ach year when the calendar draws to a close on the month of July, the collective sigh of families echoes across the county in response to the desire for just one more week of summer before school starts. That mainly comes from adults. Kids are generally ready to head to school to find their new teacher, new (and old) friends, and a new education chapter started in preparation for graduation day on down the line. Henry County Schools will be ready to welcome back over 42,000 students when the doors open at the end of July and start of August. Some administrative employees never left the buildings since the last bell rang on May 26, but many teachers will be readying their classrooms after an eight-week hiatus. It’s the annual exercise of pre-planning prep to prepare the leaders of tomorrow. There are many great things to share in Henry County with regards to our public education system. Personalized Learning continues to draw strong, positive reviews from local, state, and national business and education leaders. This year will mark the third group to start their implementation year in earnest. The first two cohorts of schools have produced positive results to take the discussion surrounding Personalized Learning’s effectiveness to the next level.
SAVE THE DATE!
In support of this major initiative and to provide our students with the technological advances they need, students all across the county will received their own computing device for learning. The voters of Henry County voted in large numbers to support E-SPLOST V. This special purpose local option sales tax included the investment of $70 million in technology upgrades. Half of that amount was designated for the purpose of moving our district to a 1:1 district. This means that all students receive a computing device for learning purposes. EmpowerHCS will move Henry County students even further into the digital age by allowing a wealth of resources to be at their fingertips.
“Henry County” and add “McDonough” to make their name representative of the area in which they serve. Design work will also begin on a new performing arts center for the northern area of Henry County. This will provide our citizens and schools in the northern portion of the county with great access to a state-ofthe-art facility for plays, concerts, and other productions.
These two efforts – Personalized Learning and 1:1 technology – will further cement Henry County Schools’ place as a forward-thinking, advanced district and illustrate to those near and far that we realize the importance of actively and creatively engaging students in their learning and giving them the resources necessary to be highly successful.
Many of these capital projects are only possible thanks to the understanding by our business community and taxpayers that quality schools need quality capital investments and improvements in order to remain competitive and attract more businesses and families to the county. This understanding helped and resulted in our E-SPLOST V passing early in 2016. The projects that were proposed will have positive impacts on the community and our ability to attract and retain quality industry members.
Ground will be broken on two new school buildings during the year, too. Henry County High School and Henry County Middle School will move to new buildings in 2019 upon the completion of construction at the new location. Not only will they get new buildings, but their names will lose the
Our successes are many, and we know they are directly attributable to our community members and business leaders who stand with us each day looking to make a positive difference and ensure success for each student.
Please plan to Join Us on Monday, September 25th at Eagle’s Brooke Golf & Country Club for the Henry County Chamber of Commerce’s 17th Annual Golf Classic. Read more on Page 13

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
JUNE WOOD
Rod Meadows Partner at Meadows, Macie & Sutton, P.C 2017 Chair of Henry County Chamber of Commerce
This year the Henry County Chamber of Commerce is celebrating its 50th anniversary. In four short years, Henry County, Georgia will celebrate its 200th birthday! The County, which was created by the Georgia legislature in 1821, from land acquired by the State from the Creek Indian Nation, originally stretched from near Indian Spring State Park in the south, to the Chattahoochee River near Sandy Springs in the north. Amazingly, Henry County included much of what is metro Atlanta today. Ultimately, the Georgia legislature apportioned sections of Henry County to become much of present day Butts, Clayton, DeKalb, Fulton, Fayette, Newton, Rockdale and Spalding Counties. It is no wonder that Henry County bears the nickname “the Mother of Counties”.
The County was named for the Virginia patriot of Scottish descent, Patrick Henry, who served as the first Governor of Virginia. Henry was a famous revolutionary orator (he was a lawyer, after all) who is remembered for the quote, “Give me liberty, or give me death.” Interestingly, although Patrick Henry was an enthusiastic supporter in the fight for independence, he later opposed the U.S. Constitution until he helped gain the adoption of the Bill of Rights. The August 19, 1971 special Sesquicentennial Edition of the WEEKLY-ADVERTISER (predecessor to the Henry Herald), celebrating the 150th anniversary of the founding of Henry County, acknowledges that the (then) newly formed Chamber of Commerce “is gratified to have been privileged to initiate plans for the Sesquicentennial Celebration!”
Now, on our 50th anniversary, the Chamber is working to establish a task force to coordinate our forthcoming celebration of our 200th anniversary in 2021. If you have an interest in assisting with this effort, please visit www.henrycounty.com and email the chamber with your contact information, which will be passed on to our coordinating task force.

Why
You know what you do. Do you know why you do it? Can you articulate that? Everyone has heard of elevator pitches. Business owners, entrepreneurs, and college graduates are all urged to have an elevator pitch – a one-minute speech you can give when you have an opportunity to “sell” yourself or your product. Unfortunately, everyone has not heard that an elevator pitch is not always appropriate when meeting someone in a business setting.
that tells your story. In a networking situation, it can (and should) be short, even one sentence, but it is the part the listener will remember. Isn’t being remembered the point? Here’s an example: 1. I am Alisa Kirk. 2. I am a business consultant for the UGA SBDC at Clayton State University.
When you’re networking, remember 3. Working with businesses to grow that everyone else is also networking. When you meet someone in a networking situation, try this: give them If you have time, you might add a story three pieces of information. Leadership Henry Class of 2017-18 Announced The members of the Leadership Henry Class of 2017-2018 have been announced. A program of the Henry County Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Henry is a 10-month program that develops participants’ leadership potential and introduces them to community leaders, heritage, challenges and services. “We are excited about the incoming class,” said Brian Andrews, chair of the Leadership Henry Board of Directors. “Our board has selected some exceptional leaders from the community, and we look forward to helping them develop their leadership skills this year.” The class year will begin in August with a Kick-Off Luncheon followed by an overnight retreat. Each month will focus on a different aspect of the community. From healthcare and public safety to state government and non-profit organizations, class members have the opportunity to learn about challenges facing the County and interact with the leaders working to address them. “Leadership Henry brings together individuals from across the county to work and learn together,” explains Andrews. “The program introduces participants to new leadership skills and encourages them to apply them to their emerging leadership roles in the community.” Using the leadership skills and concepts gained through the program, the class members will plan and execute a class legacy project that will benefit the community for years to come. The Class of 2016-2017 recently completed several enhancements to HOPE Park including a handicap accessible bathroom, funded entirely through corporate and private donations.

A Great Tool for a Sophomore’s Toolbox As you read this, students and parents across Henry County are getting those last things done before the first week of school begins. School supplies are being purchased, Open Houses attended, school clothes freshened up - July 31 is upon us! One of those things that High School sophomores in Henry County can do before they get busy that first couple weeks of school is apply for the Youth Leadership Henry Class of 2018. This leadership development program of the Henry County Chamber of Commerce is designed to ensure that our community has a strong group of young people who have the tools to help make Henry County a better place to live, work, and play. Youth Leadership Henry select a class of 40 or so High School sophomores from a pool of Henry County applicants from public, private, home, and virtual schools; and help them develop a good body of knowledge regarding how they can become a positive contributing citizen leader in our community. They will learn about the importance of, and develop their own, soft skills - crucial to success in any undertaking. They will learn about the impact of
education, public safety, healthcare, and government on our community; from the folks that currently work in those sectors in this community. Servant Leadership is a recurring theme for the class, and they are given many opportunities to apply what they are learning; to both individual and small group volunteer opportunities, as well as a whole-class service project to benefit the community. An optional activity for interested members of the class is the opportunity to take part in a Board of Directors meeting of the Henry County Chamber of Commerce. Participants have an opportunity to meet political, business, and community leaders while learning about corporate governance and parliamentary procedure. If you know a rising High School sophomore who has a love for their community and a spirit of servant leadership, encourage them to apply at youthleadershiphenry.com. The application deadline is August 23rd, but early applications are encouraged to ensure they complete all facets of the process in time.
Several new members were elected to the Leadership Henry Board of Directors. Michael Black (Henry County Fire Department), Rudy Breedlove (Academy Properties), Cheri Mathews (Henry County Government), Charles McCullom (Manry Heston) and Lincoln Parks (WebMobileFusion) officially began their term of office on July 1. During the June meeting, the following retiring board members were recognized for their service to the Leadership Henry Board of Directors: Debra Brown, Lisa Carter, Brad Johnson, Pam Milling, and Scott Whitmire. Outgoing board chair J.D. Hardin passed the gavel to Brian Andrews who will serve as board chair for the 20172018 class year. Angie Sorrow will serve as Incoming Chair, and Nancy Burdette was named Treasurer.
