Comfortably South of Atlanta The Henry County Chamber of Commerce serves as the voice for the business community, provides quality services and programs that meet the needs of its members, improves the economic environment of the community and creates a legacy of leadership for the future.
The Chamber also offers our Board Room and our smaller conference room, the Toppan Room, free to members. They make a great location to meet clients, hold training sessions, conduct interviews or just a meeting space for your business. The Chamber has free wi-fi available as well. Remember our facility is for our members to use.
I
t’s time to celebrate another new year but not the new year that occurs during colder weather. It’s time for everyone in Henry County to celebrate another new year for our school district. There will be just over 42,000 students starting school in one of the 52 facilities across the district as July rolls into August. Yellow buses will be opening their doors to drop off riders, and parents will wave goodbye to anxious students ready to see friends again and be taught by one of the dedicated, caring teachers and staff members in the ninth largest district in the state. Families from all corners of the county can expect that district leaders have been hard at work preparing for the next school year since before school dismissed for the summer. This year, a new superintendent has been a part of that very purposeful work. Superintendent Mary Elizabeth Davis joined the district in November of 2017 after the retirement of Rodney Bowler. Davis comes to the district from Cobb County Schools where she served as the Chief Academic Officer for the second largest district in Georgia. After her introduction, Super-
Save the Date!
intendent Davis set out on a tour of the district to hear from parents, students, staff members, community members, and business and government officials in order to better understand the unique place the district holds within the fabric of the county and the overall education landscape in Georgia. There were many conversations had with great input collected. From the dialogue and analysis conducted, there were three main strategic priorities crafted as a result. The focus of our work this year will include: 1. Unifying Henry County around excellence in public education. 2. Strengthening our core business of student learning. 3. Ensuring a high-performing environment for all students.
Each plays an important role moving forward in helping our students learn and achieve at the highest levels, which will ultimately position Henry County Schools as a destination school district and allow us to be a model for other districts to follow. It will require a team effort to see these priorities realized. The best school districts have the highest levels of parent and community involvement, and it is inherent on us all to support the schools, employees, and students to ensure we have a district of which we can remain proud.
Each voice matters. We are better together. Knowing this, we are proud to share with our community that among the new things they will see in our schools this year is an increase in safety and security measures. One of the most noticeable addi-
tions is that of school resource officers at more of our schools. School resource officers have traditionally been stationed at our high schools and responsible for covering the schools in their respective clusters. Now there will also be a school resource officer at each of our middle schools in order to provide greater coverage and response to any type of safety or security-related incident. Our students are our greatest responsibility and their safety and security is our number one concern. The opportunity to make the enhancement to our safety measures stemmed from district planning and community conversations with the public and county leaders. From there, our solid partnership with the county government and Henry County Sheriff’s Office made the suggestion offered a reality. There is much more to feature and celebrate for our students, staff and school communities this upcoming school year, and we know you will be just as excited to see and experience them as we are to be able to provide them for our great county.
The 18th Annual Henry County Chamber of Commerce Golf Classic will be held on Monday, September 24th, 2018.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
JUNE WOOD
Wayne Lowrey Executive Vice President at United Community Bank 2018 Chair of Henry County Chamber of Commerce
Your Chamber at Work… The Chamber of Commerce hosts many events where we discuss Henry County and how to improve it. It seems that transportation almost always is one of the topics that resonates with most participants. We are fortunate to have made some significant progress as a community in transportation improvements and I thought I would mention the process and some of our success. Funding for transportation improvements largely consists of three pools of funding. The simplest for the County are funds approved through SPLOST referendums and collected by a sales tax dedicated to projects. These funds are at the discretion of our Henry County Board of Commissioners and do not need approval outside of the County. Our second pool of money would be State funds that are provided but have no Federal component to the funding. These funds are allocated to State projects and are approved by the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). The third, but most important, source of funds are Federal transportation dollars, which must be evaluated by a Metropolitan Planning Organization
(MPO), and assigned a transportation funding priority after being reviewed by the organization, and other agencies such as Georgia Regional Transportation Authority (GRTA), and the GDOT. For Henry County, the MPO is The Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC). SPLOST funds are approved by the Board of Commissioners and are administered by the County SPLOST Management department, which does an excellent job of keeping the community informed with annual reports of each SPLOST and a master project list. For more information on SPLOST Management, you can go here: http:// www.co.henry.ga.us/Departments/SZ/SPLOST. GDOT projects in Henry County are coordinated with the Henry County Department of Transportation, which is a part of Henry County government. The County DOT information is available here: http:// www.co.henry.ga.us/Departments/DL/DOT. GDOT projects have a planning process as well, but ultimately are approved by the GDOT Board of Commissioners. While Henry Coun-
Partners for Progress.
ty lies in three GDOT Commission Districts, we are fortunate to have the most senior member of the Board, Dana Lemon, as a Henry County resident representing a part of Henry County. Projects that involve Federal transportation funds are evaluated and approved by ARC, and if approved are placed on one of two scheduled lists for implementation. The overall plan is known as the Regional Transportation Plan (RTP) and includes projects that are to be completed by the year 2040 in the current RTP. Those projects that are to be funded and completed in the next 5 years are included in the Transportation Improvement Plan (TIP). Both the RTP and TIP project list can be found on the ARC website at: https://atlantaregional. org/transportation-mobility/transportation-planning/regional-transportation-plan/ The great news about transportation funding in Henry County is that we have involved leadership that is making significant progress in getting projects funded. Our County Manager, Cheri Hobson-Matthews has
a great deal of experience in transportation planning and, along with the priorities approved by the Henry County Board of Commissioners and the teamwork with County DOT and SPLOST staffs, Henry County has developed a much needed rapport with the ARC staff. County Commission Chair June Wood and Hampton Mayor Steve Hutchison sit on the ARC Board and have done a great job for the County. One of the results of this leadership is a recent announcement by the ARC that Henry County has just been awarded an additional $14 million for funding of projects in the County. Overall, over the past two years Henry County has been at the forefront of ARC transportation funding for projects with well over $100 million in programmed improvements in the TIP. With the possibility of new transit funding options created by the new Metro Atlanta Transit Authority, of which Henry County will be a part, and the leadership we are seeing in City and County officials, transportation funding looks to be a bright spot in Henry County’s future.

Making Time to Work on Your Business have trained them to see you as interruptible when you’re in your office or in the building, find a way to let them know that this time is different.
By Alisa Kirk
Notice that the title of this article is not “Finding” Time? It always strikes me as funny when business owners tell me they can’t “find” the time to work on their business, as though there were extra time lurking somewhere if they could only see it. There is no extra time to find, so you have to make it. Here are some suggestions: •
•
•
•
Change your location when you work on your business. If it’s too hard to work in the office (because they all know you’re in there), find another spot. Try a library or a coffee shop.
•
Interruptions don’t just come from people who are present: they come from emails, telephone calls, and text messages. Solution: during your work session, lose the phone, tablet, and computer. Turn them off.
Treat working on your business as a necessary task of your business. We tend to do the things that are most urgent and postpone the rest, and working on your business strategy is If the above suggestions sound simplistic, not usually on the urgent list. Make it they are. The problem is that no matter how urgent. simplistic it sounds, we still have trouble setting Look at your weekly schedule and put aside time to work on the business. As a final strategy time on the calendar. Don’t tip (and incentive), visualize your business if make a to-do list; instead, rope off real you took the time to work on it. Think about time on your calendar. the improvements you could make if you just Train your partners and employees to had time to think them through. Athletes visuview this strategy time as vital. If you alize success, and so should you.

CHAMBER BRIEFS Learn about the great things that are happening in our community… Pastor Craig McAdams is the newest member of the City of Hampton Police Department’s chaplain program. Pastor McAdam’s is the senior pastor at Hampton First Baptist Church in Hampton, GA, and a proven leader in the community.
Youth Leadership Henry—getting back in the swing of things As you read this, our young people are heading back to school. Parents are working out attendance and schedules at open houses, reviewing supply lists, and developing and checking off those back-to-school checklists. One thing we hope you will put on your checklist is telling rising high school sophomores in Henry County about the Chamber’s Youth Leadership Henry program. Our Board of Directors is
currently accepting applications for the Class of 2019. Youth Leadership Henry helps develop servant leaders in our community through a series of program days dedicated to teambuilding, education, healthcare, state government, including a county tour and a class service project. Participants are also offered individual and small group opportunities throughout the program year to work on volunteer projects, attend board meetings,
and engage in community events. We would be delighted if you would mention the program to anyone who has a love for their community and a spirit of servant leadership, and encourage them to apply at youthleadershiphenry. com. The application deadline is August 22nd, so there’s still time to get them in! Questions about the program? Drop us a line at youthleadership@leadershiphenry.com
Don Dunlap, Excel Academy Chair of Youth Leadership Henry

Mark Butler, GA Commissioner of Labor, had full attention of a packed house.
Mark Butler, Georgia Commissioner of Labor, kept everyone’s attention as he added flavoring to Georgia and Henry County labor facts with his witty style of humor at the June Business Booster Luncheon. He opened with updates on Georgia and Henry County’s unemployment. The Georgia unemployment rate is currently at 4.3%, which is the 32nd highest rate in the nation, the result of an influx of jobs being created as well as increased wages. to Georgia and Henry County because of the job opportunities. To employers in the room who are having trouble finding quality employees, Commissioner Butler said that the supply of qualified candidates in Georgia is a major issue for HR professionals throughout the State. Many applicants are lacking in soft skills. He shared information about a number of programs provided through the Department of Labor that better prepare employees for employers. Butler also pointed out a little known statistic in Henry County that trends at about the national average for counties of this size –80% of Henry county residents are traveling outside of the county for work and 60% of the workers in Henry County don’t live here! This fact-filled luncheon was kicked off with a filling meal provided by Shane’s Rib Shack and the event was sponsored by Clayton State University’s MBA program.
