MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

JUNE WOOD

Wayne Lowrey Executive Vice President at United Community Bank 2018 Chair of Henry County Chamber of Commerce

Your Chamber at Work… During May, the Henry County Chamber of Commerce completed its annual membership campaign. Whether you are a new member to our Chamber of Commerce or one of our many long time, faithful members, I want to thank you for being a part of this organization. We greatly appreciate your investment in our Chamber. Thinking of membership reminded me of a conversation I had recently with one of our members. He was asking how he could get more involved. It’s a great question and probably one that others of you may be asking, particularly our new members. First, the old adage is true…. The more you put into something, the more you get out of it. This is certainly true with the chamber of

BUSINESS PROFILE Susan Crumbley, Executive Director Connecting Henry, Inc.

About Connecting Henry, Inc.

Connecting Henry, Inc. was formed in 1998 in response to the challenges facing our community and our families. They are proud to be entering their 20th year of operations. Connecting Henry is the gateway organization that brings community partners and citizens together to collaborate and share resources with the community to advocate for, educate, and assist one another. They build strong relationships with community leaders, agencies, schools, and faith based organizations to strengthen families and unite the community. They envision a community where collaborative partners work together to remove barriers to empower families to become stable and self-sufficient. Their organization sponsors the Henry County Collaborative Group, which hosts bi-monthly community collaborative meetings bringing together representatives from the business and faith communities, local government and public agencies, nonprofit organizations, and individuals to discuss critical issues of the community and find ways to work together to form solutions.

Beginning in 2007 to the present day, Connecting Henry has coordinated and managed countywide programs such as collaborating with Henry Horizons, a General Equivalent Diploma (GED) program designed to give at-risk teens/young adults the tools they needed to become successful. They successfully incubated the fledgling ‘Communities In Schools of Henry County’ (CIS) program, a drop-out prevention initiative in all of their county’s middle schools, now also in high schools. Furthermore, Connecting Henry developed an excellent curriculum and established a vibrant year-round Youth Services General Education Development (GED)/Workforce Development program under the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) Youth Workforce Initiative Workforce Innovation Opportunity Act (WIOA), which is now known as the S.W.A.G. “Students Working to Achieve Greatness” Program. The S.W.A.G. Program’s mission is to help youth and young adults find and successfully pursue a career path that leads to life-sustaining employment. Connecting Henry provides tailored, integrated and mutually supportive services, activities, and programs to meet the needs of their target population within the community to achieve desired benchmarks. They field 250-400 calls per month for community resources and make referrals to appropriate agencies as needed. Additionally, they collaborate with other nonprofits and assist Henry County families-in-need with housing, utilities, clothing, food, and other types of financial assistance. In December, partnering with Henry County Government, Henry County Schools, and the community, Connecting Henry hosts the Community Cares Christmas Toy Shop granting hundreds of families-in-need the opportunity to provide Christmas gifts for their children.

Community Support

A department of Henry County Government and a non-profit

organization, is the local branch of the Georgia Family Connection. Their mission is to identify and connect existing resources in the community by facilitating collaboration to strengthen families and children in Henry County.

Chamber Involvement

Susan Crumbley states, “Being a member of the Chamber gives our organization visibility and credibility to other businesses and nonprofits. Through the Chamber we make connections and refer partners and colleagues in the community.” “We highly recommend other businesses and nonprofits to join the Chamber for the networking and marketing opportunities afforded through Chamber events. Furthermore, we advise others to take advantage of the recognized and successful programs and initiatives offered by the Chamber such as the Business Boosters Luncheons, Business After Hours, Ribbon Cuttings, Leadership Henry, Youth Leadership Henry, One Henry, and more.”

Awards and Recognitions

During the past two fiscal years, the organization and its Executive Director have received numerous honors and recognitions, which have generated, in turn, great interest in their youth program, S.W.A.G. “Students Working to Achieve Greatness.” Recognition and awards include feature articles, “Women of Substance” (2015), in the Southern Journal magazine, “Connecting Henry’s Got S.W.A.G.” (2017), in the Game Changers magazine, and “Students working to achieve greatness. Connecting Henry, Inc has S.W.A.G.” (2018) in the We Are Henry Magazine, the Edward S. Bridges Community Spirit Award (2016), the Commissioner Bruce Holmes Foundation Community Service Award (2016), and Let’s Talk America Community Award (2016 and 2017).

Five Questions to Answer before Marketing Anything it! The same goes for any type of marketing – figure out what the viewer/listener/customer will want to know.

By Alisa Kirk

4. What is your objective for the marketing? Do you want to educate people about your product or service, or provide an easy way for them to purchase, or maybe just answer questions a potential customer might have? If it’s an event, perhaps you want to meet one or two people who might become referral sources.

Before you hire someone to design a website, or pay someone to put up a billboard ad, or sign up to attend a networking event (yes, that is marketing, too), there is something you can do that will greatly increase your odds of achieving your goal: you can consider five questions. Unfortunately, many business owners don’t think about these questions until after the website has been created, or after the event while they’re wondering whether it was worth the money they paid. What are these questions? 1. Who am I trying to reach with this website/ billboard/event attendance? Would you go to the supermarket with absolutely no idea of what you want to buy? No – you may buy im- 2. How will they find the website/billboard/me 3. What will they be looking for when they arrive pulse items, but you usually had a purpose for at the website, or see the billboard, or meet at the event? If it’s a digital creation, like a going. Many people, however, create a webme at the event? One of the biggest mistakes website or social media, how will the people site with no real analysis of who they’re trying when having a website created is not knowing find you? If it’s a billboard, how will they noto attract and what those people would want. what information the viewers will be seeking. tice it? If it’s an event, how will you find the Think about who you are trying to reach beIf someone would go to your site to find information on your location, make sure they find people you’re looking for? fore you design anything.

5. What specifically do you want to happen as a result of the encounter? Do you want them to call you, refer someone to you, talk about you? If you don’t know what you want to happen, how will you make sure you’re successful? It’s amazing how many business owners want the customers to call them, but they don’t make it easy for people to find their number! I know it sounds obsessive, but this is business – don’t go to another event, or pay for any type of marketing without planning why you’re going/ doing it, who you’re looking for, and what you want to happen. Then keep track of the results so you can learn and tweak the next time!

Youth Leadership Henry graduates its Class of 2018 The Youth Leadership Henry Class of 2018 met for the last time at their Graduation Ceremony from the program on the evening of Monday, May 7, 2018 at the Locust Grove Event Center. As folks arrived and checked in, they were able to catch up with their classmates that they hadn’t seen since their windshield tour of the county with County Historian Gene Morris, and their aerial view from the Hueys of the Army Aviation Heritage Flying Museum in Hampton last month. After the welcome and invocation/blessing, attendees enjoyed a great dinner catered by Shane’s Rib Shack, great community partners with our program. Each year two participants are chosen who exemplify the traits Youth Leadership Henry seeks to develop in our program, and they are recognized for their Participatory Excellence. The 2017 recipients, Miss Hunter Gause and Mr. Sebastian tenets of Youth Leadership Henry both in the proCowart, returned to present this award to the winners from this year’s class, Miss Maria Adams and gram and in outside volunteer activities. Miss Adams and Miss Caughlin shared with Miss Maggie Caughlin; recognized by their classmates and their board for the way they model the us how they had grown through participation

Parker, shared a very personal message with the class. In remarks that were often humorous (and frequently hilarious) he illustrated through personal example the importance of setting strategic goals and working toward them, while always remembering to tell the folks you love and care about that you love and care about them while you can. It was a powerful message for the class and everyone in the room. The class members were recognized with certificates of program completion and a copy of the group picture on the Oglethorpe Staircase at the Capitol from their State Government Day. After a group photo the class left this last time as a group, challenged to make our community a better place to live, work, and play. in our program through insightful remarks that Do you know a rising sophomore that would resonated with the audience of parents and class be a great fit for our program? Leadership Henry Graduates Class of 2018 The Leadership Henry Class of 2017-18 graduated during a ceremony in May. The 29 class members completed a ten month leadership training program that provided participants with an understanding of our county’s history, diversity, government, economy, education, human services and healthcare. Each month, they visited sites throughout the community, met with local and state leaders, and developed their own leadership skills. Participants were also involved in addressing the needs of the community through a legacy project chosen by the class. This year’s legacy project was the construction of a multi-use pavilion at the Bear Creek Senior Center in Hampton. During the graduation ceremony, members of the Leadership Henry board of directors presented the class with plaques and engraved portfolios. Attendees enjoyed a video with memories of their class year. Henry County Chamber of Commerce President David Gill challenged the class

to take the leadership skills gained during the program year and to utilize them in service to the community. Several awards were also given out during the evening. The Edward S. Bridges Community Spirit Award is bestowed on a Leadership Henry

alumnus who exhibits a spirit of service to Henry County. Leadership Henry Board Chair Brian Andrews presented the 2018 award to board member Laura Turner. Emeritus board member Joyce Rodgers presented the Joyce Rodgers Heart of Henry

Award. This honor is selected by the current class and bestowed upon a class member that they feel displays the highest leadership skills. The Class of 2006 created the award as a way to honor Board Emerita Joyce Rodgers for her consistent support, dedication, and leadership skills. In addition to the honoree being named in front of the class at graduation, the person chosen for this honor will serve a one-year term on the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. Mrs. Rodgers presented the 2018 award to class member Trisha Colpetzer. Congratulations to all of the Leadership Henry award winners and graduates.

Leadership Henry learns about Public Safety April’s Leadership Henry class program focused on public safety and was actionpacked with plenty of demonstrations, tours and hands-on experiences. The first part of the morning was spent learning about the Henry County Police Department, their staff and programs, and their equipment. Class members had the opportunity to see demonstrations of some of the tools and resources the department uses to keep the community safe. Next, the class visited the Fire Training Facility where members of the Henry County Fire Department shared about the types of fires and emergencies they are trained to respond to. Firefighters conducted a building rappel operation, jaws of life rescue and a live fire response. The class then traveled to the Henry County 911 Center where they enjoyed lunch by Farmhouse Catering, while listening to a presentation by Don Ash and the Henry

County Emergency Management staff. They were also visited by Animal Control staff. Afterward, class members toured the center and learned how emergency calls are received and dispatched. They also learned how the center functions as a command center in the event of a local or regional emergency. The last stop of the day was the Henry County Sherriff ’s Department and Jail. Sheriff Keith McBrayer talked with the class about the current role of the department, their current inmate population and how they care for the inmates under their supervision. Then, the class toured the jail facility, from the laundry and kitchen facilities to the pods where inmates live and are monitored. Class members had the opportunity to interact with staff and learn more about how the jail operates and the role of various staff members. Thank you to all of those who serve in public safety in Henry County!

They discussed gang activity in and around Henry county and shared some of their success

NEW TEACHERS TO HENRY COUNTY

The Henry County Chamber of Commerce is proud to support Henry County Schools in its pursuit of educational excellence by sponsoring the 2018 Teacher Induction Program (TIP) luncheon on July 18, 2018. The luncheon is part of a week-long orientation of new teachers to the Henry County School System. The Chamber sponsors this event to welcome the teachers to Henry County, but we need your help to make it a success. You can help by sponsoring the luncheon or donating promotional items. Approximately 375 new teachers will soon be arriving to join the largest employer in Henry County. They not only will provide educational opportunities for our children, but will also have a significant impact on our local economy. We are asking Chamber members to help fund the TIP luncheon and provide items representing their businesses for teacher gift bags. A donation of 375 items will be needed for the gift bags. All items for the

gift bags must be delivered to the Chamber by 4:00 pm on Thursday, July 12, 2018. Read more for a list of preferred items and instructions for registration. Printed advertisements such as promotional flyers, brochures, etc. will not be accepted unless it contains a coupon for FREE items not requiring additional purchases.

Preferred Items for Teacher Gift Bags Below is a list of preferred items, developed by teachers, for the TIP gift bags. *These are items often needed in the classroom each year.
