T

he Henry County Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) is celebrating the people and places that have given Henry County a rich past and promise a bright future in their History Has a Name series. The two new installments in this series introduce the families behind 15th Street Pizza and Pub as well as the Gardner Farm and Peach Orchard. In celebration of the new videos, the CVB hosted a Henry County trivia night and premiere event at 15th Street Pizza. The teams proved themselves to be Henry County history buffs and the scores were close. In addition to trivia, free green screen photos and free peach ice cream was available prior to the video premiere. 15th Street and Gardner Farm’s videos are part of a larger ongoing campaign – two of a currently 10 part (and growing) series. “Henry County is rich in the stories of family businesses and volunteer run organizations that are sustained by love, dedication and grit,” said Laura Luker, Director of Tourism for the CVB. “People can sample craft beer, eat pizza or buy peaches at lots of places, but it is the people behind the businesses that make the experiences truly unique.”

The History Has a Name series is part video interview and part written interview with the owners, founders and long-time managers of the organizations. The two pieces weave together the lives and stories of the people with details about the businesses they operate. The combination gives people a chance to pull back the curtain for a behind-the-scenes look at the lives and decisions that led to each attraction, while also giving the viewer a better sense of what experience each location offers. With the History Has a Name series, the CVB doesn’t just want to introduce visitors to local attractions, but to the heart and soul of who Henry County is through its people. Get to know the Henry County tourism family, including the Gardners and the McHughs, by learning more at VisitHenryCountyGeoriga.com/History.

Save the Date!! To celebrate the holiday season with fellow members and good cheer, weʼre planning a holiday party to end the year! Thursday, December 7 • 5:30 – 7:00 PM – Holiday Inn & Suites Stockbridge

JJUNE UNE WOOD WOO W OOD

Rod Meadows Partner at Meadows, Macie & sutton, P.C 2017 Chair of Henry County Chamber of Commerce

What’s next? During the last decade, one of my favorite Television shows was “The West Wing” – which portrayed day-to-day activity in the White House as I hoped it really happened. (As opposed to “House of Cards”, which is how I fear it really happens.) As each federal crisis in the show was either resolved or diverted, President Jed Bartlett would always turn to his crack White House staff with the question, “What’s next?”

Growth is going to come to Henry County whether we want it or not – we are adding the equivalent of a new city to the county every few years.

Technology, demographics, and citizen expectations are going to provide challenges and serve as change agents in our community.

At the Chamber’s recent annual Henry County Intergovernmental Retreat, a record number of local governmental and business leaders received reports regarding the numerous transportation, infrastructure, and quality of life projects being carried out by each city, and throughout the county. Then, representatives of the Atlanta Regional Council, the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and other regional entities provided thought provoking presentations on transportation trends, T-SPLOST, walking and riding trails and the overall Georgia Economic Outlook.

The challenges to our infrastructure are going to require collaboration between our governmental units – and collaboration among elected leaders as well as non-governmental community leadership.

Community organizations like the Chamber, One Henry, Faith-based entities and youth organizations will need to work with our elected leaders to effect positive changes.

In response to the day’s presentations, the multiple governmental and civic leaders agreed:

In a second day of reflection, brainstorming and collaborative goal setting, the leaders added to the al-

ready impressive accomplishments of previous Intergovernmental Retreats (including our Educational and One Henry initiatives) with the following priorities: •

The need for more frequent Intergovernmental conferences and collaborative efforts;

The development of a One Henry Community Resource Center; and

The development of a united county communication approach to gather and disseminate information regarding the numerous activities and opportunities for engagement in life-enhancing programs throughout Henry County.

What’s next? – A great deal of thought, discussion, work and fun as Henry County approaches its third century. Join all of us who are part of the Henry County Chamber in helping to continue to make Henry County a better place to live, work, pray and play.

A Business Consultant’s First Question: Where’s the Money? Alisa kirk

My office does a lot of strategic planning with our small business clients, and we are often asked by new clients for assistance in this area. Before we can offer in-depth planning, we schedule an introductory, get acquainted meeting, where we’ll ask a lot of questions. The first question is, How do you make money? Before we can help a business grow, we need to know if it’s capable of growing. If the business is losing money, or has never made enough money to be sustainable (and pay the owner a decent return), we’re not ready to talk about growth. Before growth comes stability. So we ask: Can the business make enough money to pay all bills, fund the next cycle of sales, and pay the owner? If it doesn’t now, can it ever? The model is: You sell the product (including services) to your chosen target market, which wants it enough to pay your price. If you’re not making money, does your targeted market actually want what you sell? Is it the right target market? Do you really understand the wants, needs, and fears of your target mar-

ket? Are you charging enough, or too much? Do you understand the competition, and what would make people choose you over them? Why would someone buy from you? Next question: Assuming that your business is capable of making enough money but doesn’t have the funds to purchase the needed resources, how will you fund them? What would it take to hire the personnel, purchase inventory and equipment, and correctly market your business, including having a decent website and digital marketing? Before talking about funding, you’ll need a budget, including a cost estimate for all of the needed resources. If your business is losing money, it will be hard to find a bank or other lending institution to loan you money. Before seeking funding, we may advise you to work on some things: your personal credit, reducing business debt, and tweaking the model. Your number one goal will be making the business stable, viable, and capable of growth.

Leadership Henry Tours County during September Class September’s program day for Leadership Henry focused on the history of Henry County and some of the places and people that make our County unique. The morning opened with several class members leading a discussion of The Energy Bus, the leadership curriculum utilized by the Leadership Henry program. Craig Melton and Glen Clanton did a great job engaging their fellow class members. The class experienced a moving history lesson that took them to all four Henry County cities, learning about the history of the “mother of all counties” from historian Gene Morris. After their morning on the bus, the class returned to the Chamber for a Gezzo’s lunch The next stop during County Day took the class to Atlanta Motor Speedway, one of the most famous

tracks in all of American motorsports. The 900 acre facility has been the site of some of NASCAR’s most memorable moments and hosts numerous sporting and entertainment events throughout the year. The class got a behind the scenes tour of AMS and even spent a few moments on the track! After leaving AMS, the class visited the Army Aviation Heritage Museum, also located in Hampton. The non-profit Foundation and Museum is dedicated to preserving the legacy of Army Aviation through aerial demonstrations, displays and educational programs. Veterans led the class on a tour of the museum, located at the Atlanta South Regional Airport, and shared important moments, equipment and people in aviation history. The facility also offers rides in some of the historic heli-

copters, but unfortunately, there just wasn’t enough time left in our class day for that! The class returned to the Chamber of Commerce where they heard a presentation by the Atlanta Regional Commission about the current state of the metro Atlanta region, with a focus on Henry County. Class members also learned about some of the opportunities and challenges facing our community. County Day is always an action-packed day, but an important one in learning about some of the people and places that make up our County. October’s program focuses on the community, including learning about some of the nonprofit and arts organizations serving Henry County with a “sweet” finish for the day.

Teambuilding Day for the Youth Leadership Henry Class of 2018 The Youth Leadership Henry Class of 2018 assembled for their Teambuilding Day early on the morning of Saturday October 7, at the Henry County Chamber of Commerce. The class boarded the bus and headed to Camp Fortson where they disembarked, assembled, and had their first session on 21st Century Skills/Work Ethics - this one a studentled discussion of the importance of attendance and best practices for work-

place attendance. They broke up into groups and did some “on the ground” teambuilding activities, moved to some “low-ropes” activities, then broke for a delicious lunch. Nourished and re-energized, the class proceeded to the “high ropes” activities of Ziplining and Rock Wall climbing. Through the debriefings at each session, the students learned how the activities they did applied to real-world team and

leadership applications. You can “like” their “Youth Leadership Henry” Facebook Page to see tons of pictures and videos, and also follow them on Twitter at @YLHenry to see

posts there as well. These Henry County Sophomores are already learning valuable skills to help them make our community a better place to live, work, and play!

Construction of a new cancer wellness center on the campus of Piedmont Henry Hospital began Thursday with a ceremonial demolition day. The new facility is scheduled for completion in February 2018. The 3,000-square- foot facility located on the ground level of the Foundation Education Building will be home to the hospital’s Thomas F. Chapman Cancer Wellness Program. if you are a Chamber member with good news to share, send your logo and/or photo and information to lpierre@ henrycounty.com and let us spread the word!

It was a great time at United Community Bank for the September Chamber Business After Hours. The theme was right in line with football season and the definitely scored a touchdown with this one! The food was unlike any super bowl party you could have been to and was catered by the team at United Community Bank and it was an amazing spread! There were also some great games like a football themed cookie roll game with OREO cookies, and football toss and a Football uniform dressing competition where the one who could get the uniform on the quickest was the winner! It was great fun, with awesome games and amazing prizes!! The Jackpot was set at $150 and unfortunately the names that were called were not present to win! Better luck next time! Thank you to our Elite Sponsor United Community Bank for hosting such a wonderful event!

Looking for new ways of sharing your company’s story and products? “Show and Tell” was one of the earliest games you may have played in kindergarten. You loved it so much you still remember it half a lifetime later. Your teacher had you play it so you could learn how to share with others, and how to speak in public, essential skills that still serve you today. If you’re a self-employed entrepreneur, it’s your task to work with others. The act of telling them about your craft is what we call sales. When you played “Show and Tell” in kindergarten, you inspired many people to want what you had; Come out to our “Show and Tell BBL” and bring out your inner child in your business and enthusiastically sell what you love to do in a fun and creative way.
