Your Chamber at Work…

I love to watch College Football this time of the year. This past weekend while watching some of the games, I got to thinking about all that goes into getting a team ready to play. When we watch our favorite team compete on the football field, it is easy to take for granted that they are well prepared to execute the game plan. However the team’s performance on the field doesn’t just happen. Much time and effort is spent getting the team ready before and during the football season. For that, the team needs much support. Recruiting, strength training and practices require many coaches. A successful program like the University of Georgia will have not only coaches but graduate assistants and football operations personnel to help with the many details of practices,

game days and travel to other locations for away games. We, the fans, see the product on the field, we don’t see all the behind the scenes efforts that take place.

The same is true for the Henry County Chamber of Commerce. As this year’s Chairman, I have been amazed at the activity level of our Chamber. Monthly activities like the Business Booster Luncheon, Business After Hours, Ribbon Cuttings, various committee meetings including the Board of Director’s meeting, have to be scheduled and planned.

work. These events don’t just happen without the work of the Henry County Chamber of Commerce staff and many volunteers. Beyond these activities, the chamber serves as an advocate for the Henry County business community to promote economic activity. Additionally, the chamber works to inspire future leaders through the Leadership Henry and Youth Leadership Henry programs. It also serves as a resource for tourism and visitor information, constantly seeking ways to promote Henry County.

I want to thank David Gill and the Henry County Chamber of Commerce staff for their dedication and commitment in making these events not only possible but well planned and very well done. Next time you see our President, David Gill,

About United Food Force

From its industrial food bank operation located in McDonough, GA, United Food Force deploys an “Army of Angels,” each week to combat hunger in communities throughout Henry County and beyond. Rhonda Miller founded the organization in 2012. Her passion to serve the underprivileged has driven the organization of six full-time and 2 parttime employees from serving 72 families a week in 2013 to serving more than 2000 families a week today.

The mission of United Food Force, a non-profit, hunger relief organization, is to fight hunger through united forces and partnerships. Providing nutritional food products and other resources, United Food Force has built a distribution system through a network of partner organizations including churches, shelters, food programs, local school systems and events.

In an interview with VoyageATL, Miller pointed to a statistic that brings the organization’s goals into stark focus. “According to the department of agriculture, 1 in every 5 households is food insecure in the United States today.

The need is greater than most could imagine.

Unforeseen tragedies and unfortunate circumstances can happen to any one of us at any given time. The children of today are our future tomorrow and we need to come together in our communities and help nurture and sustain their bodies and minds in an effort to provide a better and brighter tomorrow.”

From adopting underprivileged families during the holiday season to hosting a charity golf tournament in support of hunger relief, the instances of support provided by United Food Force to the community are many. As long as there are people who are in need of basic food sustenance, United Food Force will be there to lead the charge.

Chamber Involvement

The organization is planning to open a second food bank location in November to support communities in the Tampa, FL area. Miller commented, “There is a great need in Florida with so many displaced by Hurricane Maria, people are living in tents outside of the Tampa area. We are serving over 2000 a week here in Georgia and we are looking to serve that many soon in Florida.”

Community Involvement

United Food Force has been on the forefront to help communities when disaster strikes. They were part of the Henry County consortium of organizations that assisted tornado and hurricane victims last year.

United Food Force set up food tables in Cordele, GA, to serve those who were displaced by tornados. They

United Food Force credits their membership with the Chamber for opening doors to new community partnerships that have given them the ability to raise awareness for hunger relief. “As a result of our membership we are able to ensure basic human needs are met in our community,” said Miller.

United Food Force is seeking partnerships and support for their annual Holiday Family Adoption program providing food and toys to those who are under priviledged. Three Ways to Show Your Employees You Appreciate Them

G

ratitude is an amazing source of fuel in the workplace. Studies have shown that when people feel appreciated for their personal contributions, supportive behavior is twice as likely to reoccur. This triggers a cycle of feeling valued and boosting performance. Conversely, feeling unappreciated and undervalued is the number one reason people quit their jobs. So how can you create a culture of gratitude in your organization? Here are three ways to show your appreciation: 1. Say “thank you” privately and publicly. A private thank you is a direct exchange between you and the individual or group. Your acknowledgement should be for the specific task(s) that they’ve done instead of general praise. Also, thank them right after the task was completed. When you repeat your thanks and praise publicly, your team will perceive it to be more genuine and meaningful because it will not be

the first time that they’ve heard it.

2. Invest in your employees’ professional development. A 2012 study conducted by the American Psychological Association found that 70% of employees associate being valued with opportunities for growth and development.

Workshops, webinars, shadowing, crosstraining, and participation on projects that enable employees to hone and utilize untapped skill sets are all ways to engage your people. Offering development opportunities also shows that you value them enough to make an investment that makes them and the organization better.

3. Invest in your team’s mental health. It may seem counter-productive, but saying ‘thank you’ with time off and a trip to the spa for a massage can go much further than a pat on the back. If your people put in long hours, take on additional responsibilities, sacrifice worklife balance and sometimes just to go the extra-mile for your customers–then certainly you can go an extra mile for your employees. Give an unexpected ‘stayca-

tion’ to a deserving team member, complete with an overnight hotel stay, movie tickets, and gift card to their favorite restaurant. You’d be surprised how much a gesture like this can say.

The absence of gratitude or appreciation in the workplace fuels resentment and apathy, which leads to team dysfunction and underperformance. If you want

to increase retention, focus, synergy, and performance in your workplace, then cultivate gratitude daily in ways that resonate individually and collectively with your employees.

Leadership Henry Class of 2019 holds annual class retreat

De Wafelbakkers Expands Frozen Food Production Facility in Henry County HENRY COUNTY, GA‐ September 7, 2018‐‐ The Henry County Development Authority and the Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD) announced today that De Wafelbakkers, a manufacturer of made from scratch breakfast products, will invest $15 million to expand its production facility in Henry County. The expansion project will also create 83 jobs. This investment and job creation represents the first part of a planned two‐phase expansion.

De Wafelbakkers opened its Henry County facility in 2010. The expansion project will ultimately result in two new production lines as well as automation of certain production processes.

According to Dumas Garrett, President & CEO of De Wafelbakkers, “De Wafelbakkers is excited to have the opportunity to expand our operations in Henry County. We appreciate all the assistance we have received from both Henry County and the State of Georgia. Our facility in Georgia has great employees and we look forward to bringing more jobs to Henry County.”

The new class of Leadership Henry attended the annual class retreat at Camp Twin Lakes in September, allowing members the opportunity to get to know each other better as well as learn more about what to expect from the program this year.

The thirty-three class members arrived at Camp Twin Lakes on Thursday morning and spent the first part of the day learning about their individual StrengthsFinder reports.

The assessment, designed by Don Clifton, empowers leaders by identifying their unique sequence of thirty-four themes of talent and providing useful insights into utilizing their natural abilities. Araina Reaves, Community Development Consultant at Georgia EMC, led the group in a series of activities to help them become more aware of, as well as better understand, their strengths both as individuals and as a collective team.

The class had the opportunity to tour Camp Twin Lakes with camp staff and learn about some of the programs the facility offers for children with illnesses, disabilities, and other challenges.

After dinner, class members showed their competitive sides with some intense team games including marshmallow spitting and Rock, Paper, Scissors.

Friday morning began with Leadership Henry board members leading the class in a discussion on their Energy Bus reading, the leadership development curriculum being utilized this year followed by team building activities in the gym led by the Camp Twin Lakes staff. Participants learned about working together as a team and developing a plan. Afterward, they headed into the woods for the challenge course and the infamous twenty foot “Terry’s Wall.”

It was a memorable retreat which formed a strong framework for the upcoming year.

Class members learned a lot about themselves, but also about the new relationships formed with the other participants.

Thank you to the Leadership Henry board for planning and facilitating another amazing retreat.

AUGUST BUSINESS AFTER HOURS RECAP Hosted by Two Wheel Adventures

Two Wheel Adventures Motorcycle Academy Founder Chris Carr treated attendees to Can-Am rides, celebrity sightings, prizes, a racing showcase on the main track and more, at the Business After Hours networking event held on August 23.

Chris introduced his nonprofit organization Motofit Kids, Inc. Chris founded Motofit, a motorcycle camp for kids, for the purpose of providing youth with an opportunity to learn off-road motorcycling, develop individuals and provide a lifelong experience that will transform their lives.

Small Business Council Committee Chair Dodie Cason, Branch Manager of Hamilton State Bank, welcomed Attorney Christine Green who practices with Atlanta-based Stanton Law, LLC. Green has counseled and represented many clients on matters concerning the ADA and she specializes in ADA Public Accessibility issues. She shared that 20% of Americans face some sort of disability. By making places of business accessible to the disabled, not only is the community better served, but the size of the business’ customer base is increased. This special event highlights the companies and individuals working to build and strengthen Henry County’s vibrant business community.

THANK YOU FROM THE PRESIDENT new teachers with the annual Teacher Induction Program luncheon. Not only does the education committee organize and conduct these events, members raise the thousands of dollars necessary to enable the Chamber to host these events.

The Small Business Council is the group that plans and conducts the monthly Business Booster’s Luncheon, planning programs and speakers months in advance. This group works diligently to create programs that will educate and entertain a wide cross section of attendees, and they never fail to please with their presentation selections. In addition, this group is planning the first of what we hope will be an annual event, The Woman’s EmPOWERment Conference to be held in March of 2019.

Government Affairs keeps our members current on legislative issues both locally and at the State level. This committee organizes an annual Henry County Day at the State Capitol, not only allowing members a meaningful opportunity to hear directly from members of our legislative delegation but other statewide office holders as well. At the same time, the committee provides a gift bag to each legislator and key state officials that showcases Henry County’s manufactured or centered products. The Committee also sponsors a legislative reception, offering members of the Henry County delegation an opportunity to meet with Chamber members following the session.

Our Membership Committee conducts an annual membership drive, enabling the Chamber to broaden its reach, but also meets regularly to ensure a consistent program to build

The Chamber of Commerce is fortunate to have a staff of 6 but a workforce many times that number due to the active participation by Chamber members in the daily work of the Chamber. October is traditionally the month that the Chamber honors those members and I want to add my appreciation to that of the Chamber for their hard work. While it does not recognize all that the members contribute to the Chamber, the information below showcases some of their work.

I must first acknowledge the Board of Directors, who not only make time to attend a monthly meeting to guide the policies of the Chamber, but are often in attendance at other Chamber functions. The Board also serves as the Chamber’s ambassadors to the community and enables the Chamber staff to hear from a wide range of the business and public communities.

The Executive Committee of the Board is a dedicated group that goes farther, with additional meetings monthly to conduct financial and personnel matters for the Chamber and to recommend policy items to the full Board.

The Chamber Ambassadors serve as the public face of the Chamber, and these members give an extraordinary amount of their time to attend ribbon cuttings, go on Chamber Connection visits and to assist the Chamber staff with events such as the annual golf classic and the member appreciation luncheon. I cannot thank the Ambassadors enough for their work for the Chamber.

The Boards of Leadership Henry and Youth Leadership Henry give an enormous amount of time to building both present and future leaders. These dedicated members often participate not only in regular monthly board meetings, but also in the monthly activity of the leadership classes.

The Chamber’s primary fundraiser is the annual Golf Classic, held in September of each year. The Golf Committee plans and conducts the tournament, and enjoys the assistance of many of our members who are essential to a well-organized event.

On Wednesday, October 31st, the Chamber will host all of its members at the annual Member Appreciation Luncheon. I encourage you to dress in your favorite Halloween costume and attend this luncheon. You will enjoy some barbecue, but more likely you will meet a new friend or have the opportunity to catch up with long time acquaintances. I hope to see you there.
