MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
JUNE WOOD
Wayne Lowrey Executive Vice President at United Community Bank 2018 Chair of Henry County Chamber of Commerce
Your Chamber at Work… Serving as the 2018 Chairman for the Henry County Chamber of Commerce has been quite an experience. I have a new appreciation for the complexities and challenges that come with being a thriving and growing county such as Henry County. One of the ways the Henry County Chamber of Commerce leads in addressing these challenges is through our annual Intergovernmental Retreat. This year’s retreat was held In August at Merle Manders’ Conference Center in Stockbridge. This is always a great event as it allows an opportunity for local leaders of government, education, health, nonprofits and business to meet, discuss current challenges and develop a shared vision of direction for Henry County. It is great to see the
teamwork shown by these individuals who recognize that we can accomplish much more by working together as a group on common goals. One of the visions of an earlier Intergovernmental Retreat was the formation of the One Henry Economic Alliance. One Henry’s Committees are working on ways to better prepare us for Henry County’s anticipated growth by addressing areas of workforce development, entrepreneurs, technology, transportation, arts and leisure and image and communications. Here’s a brief overview of the various committees: Workforce Development – develop a Center for Education and Entrepreneurship as part of the workforce de-

velopment plan of action. This Center will focus on workforce development by partnering with the Henry County Academy for Advanced Studies along with Southern Crescent Technical College and Clayton State University. Entrepreneurs – establish an incubator program to encourage the development of small businesses. Technology – partner with the Technology Association of Georgia to develop a technology presence in south metro. Arts and Leisure – promote the establishment of an entertainment district. Transportation – work with the Henry County Development Authority to create Community Improvement
Districts to support traffic relief. Advocate for an additional interchange along I-75. Image and Communications – work to promote community in tune with its heritage and focused on its future. Redefine Henry County as a unique destination to promote a positive image of Henry County as truly “One Henry.” Yes, being part of a growing, thriving community comes with its challenges. It’s good to know that we have great leadership in Henry County both from our elected leaders and through volunteer efforts like those of the One Henry Alliance to help prepare us for the future.

BUSINESS PROFILE Roxy Patel Owner and Center Director Mathnasium of McDonough
About Mathnasium of McDonough
Mathnasium of McDonough opened for business in time to bring fun and effective supplementary math programs for community children in grade K2-12 in this school year. The learning center focuses solely on math and operates on the core belief that virtually any child can excel in the subject. The Mathnasium Method™, implemented at more than 700 Mathnasium centers in the U.S. and abroad, is a unique program that provides each child with a customized learning plan and personalized instruction in a way that makes sense to them. “Our students will receive the fundamental practice they need to master number facts, build computational skills, and improve number sense, an intuitive understanding of how numbers work,” said Roxy Patel, owner of the Mathnasium of McDonough tutoring service. Mathnasium students receive the support they need for school homework and tests while building their math foundations. “As educators, we strive to offer Henry County students a balanced math learning experience: one that fills in the gaps, keeps students on track with math taught in school, and, most importantly,
makes learning math a fun and joyful experience,” Patel concluded.
Community Support
“Mathnasium centers across the country have helped struggling students develop into ‘A’ students and ‘A’ students go on to even greater achievement,” Patel continued. “We are thrilled to be able to bring our Mathnasium Method™ to support the families of McDonough. We are excited to be a part of the Henry County community and working with the schools in Henry County in order to raise test scores in math. “
Chamber Involvement
Since joining the Chamber earlier this year, Center Director Patel has been preparing for the start of the current school year. She has had limited time to attend the Chamber networking events but keeps abreast of events and happenings through the Chamber’s weekly E-News and Website. She also utilizes the Chamber’s Marketing tools to continue getting the word out about Mathnasium.

Funding Debt with Debt enough to save them. Sometimes they don’t realize that the lender will draft their bank account whether or not they’re ready to pay the bill. Sometimes they don’t know (or didn’t pay attention) that if they violate a term of the agreement, the drafts can escalate, the whole amount may become due, or their accounts can be cut off.

When these things happen, the entrepreneur may seek help in finding more financing. It breaks my heart, but I have to tell them that even if a lender would give them more money, there is absolutely no situation where they can survive the downward spiral of paying off debt by getting more debt. Without a solid plan for how they can repay the debt (the old debt or the new debt), they are not going to make it.

here’s one issue that comes up from time to time when I’m talking with small business owners: funding debt with debt. They find themselves in a situation where they are either growing too fast or having a slow spell, and they max out credit cards or lines of credit and need money in a hurry. Sometimes they agree to a short-term loan or some type of financing and don’t read the fine print or understand what will happen after they get the money. Sometimes the money they get is enough to get them through the rough spot, they pay the money back, and everything works out great...

CHAMBER BRIEFS Leadership Henry Kicks Off New Class Year Learn about the great things that are happening in our community…
City of Stockbridge Councilmember John Blount was recently recognized by the Lambda Sigma Sigma Alumnae Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. The organization awarded him the Certificate of Appreciation for his commitment to making a difference in various communities. The award is given annually to individuals for extraordinary community service.
The Leadership Henry Class of 2019 came together for the first time on August 15 at a kickoff luncheon held at the Henry County Chamber of Commerce. The luncheon provided an opportunity for the 29 class members to meet their new Leadership Henry classmates and Board Members, as well as learn more about the upcoming class year. Leadership Henry Chair Angie Sorrows provided the welcome and introduced the 18-member board of directors who develop and lead the annual leadership program. Board members Laura Turner and Scott Whitmire led the group in an icebreaker followed by an invocation. After lunch by Shane’s Rib Shack, Chamber President David Gill shared the history and purpose of the Leadership Henry

program. Other board members were on hand to offer information about the upcoming year’s programs, expectations, and projects. The class members will officially begin their program year at an overnight retreat in early September and then launch into their monthly programs later in the month. The first class session will focus on the County’s history and explore some of the people and places that make our community unique.
Leadership Henry is a program of the Henry County Chamber of Commerce and seeks to prepare, involve, and sustain leaders from diverse backgrounds who are committed and competent to address community challenges and improve the quality of life in Henry County. It is one of more than 1,000 leadership development programs throughout the United States. The ten-month program is designed to provide a series
of educational and participatory experiences as well as an opportunity for dialogue and the development of new personal relationships among participants. The class is also involved in addressing the needs of our community through a legacy project chosen by the class members. For more information on Leadership Henry, visit www. leadershiphenry.com.
Recognizing an Amazing Community Contributor By Don Dunlap Chair, YLH Board of Directors
City of Stockbridge Councilmember Neat Robinson has been appointed to serve on the Georgia Municipal Association’s (GMA) Legislative Policy Council. The council is responsible for proposing the association’s Legislative Platform and engaging other city officials in the legislative process throughout the year in helping move the platform forward. If you are a Chamber member with good news to share, send your logo and/or photo and information to bingram@henrycounty.com and let us spread the word!
The Youth Leadership Henry Board of Directors is pleased to announce its first-ever Emeritus board member, Mrs. Susan Howington. Many folks in Henry County will recognize Susan in her role at the University of Georgia Agricultural Extension office on Lake Dow Road in McDonough, at Heritage Park. In that role, she has had a very positive impact on agricultural and nutritional education in our community. In 1997, Susan completed the Chamber’s Leadership Henry program, which had only been in existence for five years at the time. She immediately recognized that the amount of knowledge she and other members of her Leadership Henry class had gained about our community as a result of their participation could also be a valuable addition to future leaders in our community. Namely, high

school level students who have not yet contemplated what their role might be as post-secondary citizens in Henry County. Acting on that realization, she worked with some other Leadership Henry alumni to create a scaled-down version of Leadership Henry that would be appropriate and fit into the schedule of a high school student. She looked to identify students eager to learn about Henry County and how they could contribute to make it an even better

place to live, work, and play. The Youth Leadership Henry program graduated its first class in 1998, and has been developing future leaders in our community ever since. Through its 20 year history (thus far!), Susan Howington has served these young people as Founder and Member of the Board of Directors, ensuring that
the program maintains its fidelity to her original vision of creating competent and contributing leaders for our community. Recognizing that we would be remiss not to formally celebrate the selfless contributions of a leader of Susan’s caliber, our board of directors amended our bylaws to create the Emeritus Director position on our board, and was pleased to unanimously elect Susan as the first such director. As our selections committee works to select another class of sophomores from across Henry County, won’t you join us in celebrating the passion and commitment of the person who made their work possible, Mrs. Susan Howington!
